Bees are a diverse group with more than 1000 species known from the Iberian Peninsula. They have increasingly received special attention due to their important role as pollinators and providers of ecosystem services. In addition, various rapid human-induced environmental changes are leading to the decline of some of its populations. However, we know very little about the conservation status of most species and for many species, we hardly know their true distributions across the Iberian Peninsula. Here, we present a collaborative effort to collate and curate a database of Iberian bee occurrences to answer questions about their distribution, habitat preference, phenology, or historical trends. In total we have gathered 87 684 records from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands of 923 different species with 87% of georeferenced records collected between 1830 and 2022. In addition, each record has associated information such as the sampling location (89%), collector and person who identified the species (64%), date of the capture (54%) and plant species where the bees were captured (20%). We believe that this database is the starting point to better understand and conserve bee biodiversity in the Iberian Peninsula. It can be accessed at: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6354502

In this document we share the 2018 results and related data in the annual workings of the Palawan Island Palaeohistory Research Project. At the Ille site we continued to excavate at the East West Connecting and the West Mouth West Extension trenches, as well as the newest trench, called Balete. At Pasimbahan-Magsanib we continued to excavate, with the focus on totally exposing a partially-exposed cremation along the east wall of Trench B, hypothesized to possibly belong to a cluster of cremation burials similar to that exposed at Ille (see previous reports. We also wanted to complete the excavation at Makangit-Maliit-na–Bato, and continue excavating Makangit-Pabintana, and Pacaldero cave sites. The exploration of the landscape for new archaeological sites also continued in 2018. Regarding our heritage initiative, we aimed to improve the contents of the Archaeology and Natural History Exhibit Hall, as well as continue with our community heritage engagement and education initiatives. There was also the matter of how to ethically solve the problem of surrendered human remains to the project that were collected during the 2010-2011 frenzy surrounding the purchase of human remains by unscrupulous individuals, who then passed them as the remains of World War Two Japanese missing-in-action casualties. These bones were surrendered to the project at the tail-end of the 2017 field season at the Dewil Valley. Specific objectives, however, were not all achieved. We did not manage to excavate the West Mouth West Extension Trench beyond the shell layers; the exposure of complex features, such as pits, slowed down the excavation process. The excavation of Trench B East extension at Pasimbahan is still far from achieving its main purpose: to properly expose the cremation context at the bottom of the east wall of Trench B. While Makangit-Maliit-na-Bato excavation was completed as planned, and we have located a new archaeological site (Maulohin Itaas) in Imorigue, the excavation of Makangit-Pabintana did not happen because the archaeologist who was suppose to lead the excavation did not manage to join the field season. We are general satisfied with the results of our latest revision of the exhibit inside the Natural History and Archaeology Exhibit Hall in the Dewil Valley. We still await the full blooming of consciousness within the New Ibajay community that will allow for the full implementation of a ecomuseum approach, a bottom-up, approach to the curation of the space. We are also satisfied with the way the modern human remains surrendered to the project was ethically resolved - through reburial - involving the municipal government, the barangay leadership and members of the New Ibajay community. Archaeobotany is under-utilised as a tool and as an approach in Southeast Asia. In Island Southeast Asia, the studies of the past rely heavily on the ability of archaeology to generate data. Several key questions on early Island Southeast Asian history (prehistory) can be better addressed with a robust archaeobotanical data set. This research therefore had a two-pronged approach: one that dealt with the application and improvement of archaeobotanical methods; and another approach that addressed current archaeological issues from the standpoint of the archaeobotanical data. This work directly studied 10 archaeological sites, with 169 archaeobotanical contexts, not including data from 7 other sites. These comprise the sum-total of sites with published archaeobotanical data from northern Wallacea. The study advanced the archaeobotanical methodology in terms of macro remains and especially charred parenchymatous tissue determination in Island Southeast Asia. It equally addressed key issues of early Southeast Asian history, specifically questions concerning the nature of the Austronesian dispersal throughout northern Wallacea, and the cultural transformations that came after this dispersal. It has also focused on finding out if there is a correlation between the existence of neolithic pottery and cereal agriculture in northern Wallacea. The results of the study show no correlation. There is however direct evidence of archaeological settlements having a pottery-tuberlegume correlation. The data also shows evidence of consumption and utilisation of various plants throughout the time frame covered by the archaeological sites studied. The data suggest more arboreal-based economies existing even in periods where cereal agriculture is historically known to have exist in the region. Choosing as a limit for the study a biogeographic region proved useful as a tool to manage the analysis of the archaeobotanical data, suggest periods for deposition of these plant remains, and for assessing levels of security of archaeological stratigraphic layers.

Recent excavations in northern Palawan, Philippines provide zooarchaeological and macrobotanical evidence documenting human occupation and changes in faunal composition and subsistence strategies. Here we present the archaeobiological record of Pasimbahan-Magsanib site dating from c. 10,500 yr. BP to the subrecent. The terrestrial vertebrate record provides for a more robust Palawan biostratigraphy and chronicles Late Quaternary changes in mammalian composition and human responses to the changing abundance of large mammal communities. Well-stratified shell layers and middens contain a wide variety of taxa derived from freshwater, estuarine and marine environments that also provide insights on varying subsistence strategies and the local ecology. Macrobotanical evidence provides further evidence for both foraging and possible plant management strategies in the Holocene. AD 17/02/2014

In its first two years the project concentrated work in the Rio Tuba-Bataraza area, and around the Quezon district. The work done in the first years focused on archaeological assessments in search for sites that may contribute to our knowledge of the deep history of the main island of Palawan. The early years also concentrated on palaeoenvironmental sampling in-line with our general objective of gathering proxy evidence towards a better understanding of people-landscape relationships through time. This study proposes a methodology to calibrate microscopic traffic flow simulation models. The proposed methodology has the capability to calibrate simultaneously all the calibration parameters as well as demand patterns for any network topology. These parameters include global and local parameters as well as driver behavior and vehicle performance parameters; all based on multiple performance measures, such as link counts and speeds. Demand patterns are included in the calibration framework in terms of turning volumes. A Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) algorithm is proposed to search for the vector of the model?s parameters that minimizes the difference between actual and simulated network states. Previous studies proposed similar methodologies; however, only a small number of calibration parameters were considered, and none of the demand values. Moreover, an extensive and a priori process was used in order to choose the subset of parameters with the most potential impact. In the proposed methodology, the simultaneous consideration of all model parameters and multiple performance measures enables the determination of better estimates at a lower cost in terms of a user?s effort. Issues associated with convergence and stability are reduced because the effects of changing parameters are taken into consideration to adjust them slightly and simultaneously. The simultaneous adjustment of all parameters results in a small number of evaluations of the objective function. The experimental results illustrate the effectiveness and validity of this proposed methodology. Three networks were calibrated with excellent results. The first network was an arterial network with link counts and speeds used as performance measurements for calibration. The second network included a combination of freeway ramps and arterials, with link counts used as performance measurements. Considering simultaneously arterials and freeways is a significant challenge because the two models are different and their parameters are calibrated at the same time. This represents a higher number of parameters, which increases the complexity of the optimization problem. A proper solution from all feasible solutions becomes harder to find. The third network was an arterial network, with time-dependent link counts and speed used as performance measurements. The same set of calibration parameters was used in all experiments. All calibration parameters were constrained within reasonable boundaries. Hence, the design and implementation of the proposed methodology enables the calibration of generalized micro-simulation traffic flow simulation models.

The Palawan Island Palaeohistoric Research Project (PIPRP) is in its ninth year. The project was initiated in 2003 primarily led by researchers from the Archaeological Studies Program of the University of the Philippines and the National Museum of the Philippines. In its first two years the project concentrated work at the south and central parts of the main island; namely within the Rio Tuba-Bataraza and the Quezon area. The work focused on site assessments and palaeoenvironmental sampling, which further improved our general understanding of past environments in the region. Since 2004, focus shifted towards the northern end of the island, particularly within the municipality of El Nido. Much of the work shifted towards larger-scale excavations anchored primarily in the Dewil Valley. Apart from excavations at the two main Dewil sites, Ille and Pasimbahan-Magsanib, more surveys were conducted in the valley’s open landscape and in other parts of the municipality, such as in Sibaltan and the El Nido town proper. The field season for this year started in late March and ending in early May. The protracted progress of the project for 2011 is reflected in this report, supplemented by specialist reports on data accumulated through several field seasons. It is worth underscoring that post-excavation work continues as of this writing. In the first two years of the project the work concentrated more in the south and central parts of the island, at the Rio Tuba-Bataraza area, and in the Quezon district. These early initiatives were mostly consisted of surveys, site assessments, and palaeoenvironmental sampling. Since 2004, work concentrated in the northern end of the island, within the municipality of El Nido. The research is primarily led from the Archaeological Studies Program at the University of the Philippines (UP-ASP), and the National Museum of the Philippines (NM). For the season of 2010, the project continued to focus on an area covered by the Municipality of El Nido, expanding from its previous locus within the Dewil valley, New Ibajay, to include the area around Barangay Sibaltan, and within the town proper of El Nido. Like in previous years, the various research interests of the UPASP, the NM, and the scholars/research institutions from abroad were accommodated within the broad framework of the project. This report narrates the on-going research entitled "The Palawan Island Palaeohistoric Project". The project started in 2004, with active research consistently pursued to the present. The work is primarily initiated from the Archaeological Studies Program, University of the Philippines. For the season of 2009, the project focused on an area covered by the Municipality of El Nido, specifically in the Dewil valley, which includes Barangay New Ibajay. The various research interests of the Archaeological Studies Program (ASP), the National Museum of the Philippines and the scholars/research institutions from abroad were accommodated within the broad framework of the project. Just like in the previous years, an international array of specialist collaborators took part in the field season. The research concerns of our collaborators were satisfied mainly through the specialized nature of their interest, which directly enriched the nature of the project. The field season started in April and ended in May 2009. The slow but continuous post-excavation work from earlier seasons is reflected in this report through the inclusion of specialists reports; as of writing, more post-excavation analysis continues.
