This paper reports on the Hackathon Sessions organised at the Polar Data Forum IV (PDF IV) (20–24 September 2021), during which 351 participants from 50 different countries discussed collaboratively about the latest developments in polar data management. The 4th edition of the PDF hosted lively discussions on (i) best practices for polar data management, (ii) data policy, (ii) documenting data flows into aggregators, (iv) data interoperability, (v) polar federated search, (vi) semantics and vocabularies, (vii) Virtual Research Environments (VREs), and (viii) new polar technologies. This paper provides an overview of the organisational aspects of PDF IV and summarises the polar data objectives and outcomes by describing the conclusions drawn from the Hackathon Sessions.

From July 2022 to December 2022, the World Data System (WDS) International Technology (ITO) and International Program (IPO) Offices conducted a review of strategic plans and technical roadmaps of all current WDS members and the set of Canadian repositories that participated in the Digital Research Alliance of Canada's CoreTrustSeal Certification Support and Funding Pilot (Digital Research Alliance of Canada, 2022). The purpose of this review was to test out a new organizational assessment method designed to identify needs and challenges faced by the WDS and Canadian CoreTrustSeal (CTS) Cohort members. Additionally, incorporated into this assessment were criteria from the Global Biodata Coalition (GBC), which is an initiative created to support funders by identifying and prioritizing fundamental data resources.

This document is a synopsis of the tasks completed in the first year of the Polar Pilot Federated Search (PPFS) project. The WDS-ITO developed this set of tools and portal for the POLDER Working Group with the goal to provide a single search interface for both Arctic and Antarctic metadata. This document aims to ensure the PPFS stays relevant and valuable to the research data management (RDM) community. One of the outputs from the Research Data Alliance - Research Metadata Schemas Working Group was a set of crosswalks between Schema.org(SDO) terms and properties used in metadata schemas. This simple set of crosswalks was used to create a suite of visualizations that allow data managers to investigate how their colleagues have included SDO in their metadata landing pages. This document explores one way to use the existing set of crosswalks and visualizations to provide a preliminary set of recommendations for SDO markup for metadata. This site is a narrative/storyfied walkthrough of a harvestable service implementation plan flow-chart available at 10.5281/zenodo.4589014. Twine is an open-source tool for generating HTML pages that allow users to tell interactive, nonlinear stories.This tool was conceived as a virtual walk-through of the steps towards an implementation plan and is a type of “choose your own adventure” activity. Each step makes use of other relevant instructional materials and tools in this package, adding up to a structured compendium of guidance for repository managers. The narrative also has links to the other supporting resources generated in this work package. As users navigate and add information to the narrative they are building an implementation plan, which can be printed at the conclusion of the story.

This is a slide deck of presentations delivered by the International Technology Office (ITO) at the Harvestable Metadata Services-Working Group (HMetS WG) sessions. The HMetS WG was active from April 2020 to March 2021 and discussed the processes and mechanisms for gathering and exposing metadata through various avenues. The International Technology Office (ITO) presented the Searchable Index project to the Portage Discovery and Metadata Expert Group (DMEG - formerly DDEG). The purpose of this presentation was to request member feedback on the Searchable Index project. The presentation outlined the project���s scope, goals, and methods used for data collection. This record includes a slide deck of that presentation. This product was developed to fill a gap the ITO identified in conjunction with ITO Harvestable Metadata Service -Working Group members, who needed an efficient way to conduct an landscape level scan of aggregators and federations available to consume their metadata services. This flowchart is a schematic representation of the information-gathering steps and decisions made in the process of developing a Harvestable Metadata Services implementation plan.The diagram includes steps that repository managers can walk through when creating a service. This flowchart is a set of decision points for the managers and is presented as a deliverable in PDF, jpeg and XML formats that can be edited to suit other use cases.This chart is intended to support a planning exercise, with the response to each node in the chart leading the user through different processes.The Flowchart wasupdated on February 7th, 2023. The International Technology Office (ITO) created a template for an implementation plan document that can be used by data managers who want to create a harvestable metadata service. This document poses a questionnaire by incorporating relevant content found in other implementation plans and roadmaps for data service implementations reviewed for this project. In particular, we borrowed from the CESSDA-Saw (Europe) guidance package,and the JISC (UK) project management guide and project plan template. The user of the ITO template will find editable fields with instructions on how to complete each section. Once the user has entered content into those fields, the instructions will disappear. Users are encouraged to edit any part of the template document to fit the circumstances of their own implementation project. Users are also encouraged to consult related resources from ITO, likethe slide decks from the WG meetings that included guest speakers addressing different issues in harvestable metadata services, the Searchable Index of Metadata Aggregators and its companion guide, and the forthcoming HMetS-WG use-cases report.

This report serves as an update to the 2017 Data Management Position Paper submitted to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) by the Leadership Council for Digital Research Infrastructure (LCDRI). The report summarizes the Research Data Management (RDM) landscape in Canada, and documents challenges and opportunities for the current RDM ecosystem and Digital Research Alliance of Canada (the Alliance). The intent of this work is to position the Alliance to build on the current state and chart a path forward that advances RDM in coordination with other digital research infrastructure (DRI) elements to support research excellence. This report summarizes the results of a surveyofWorld Data System members conducted between 02 April and 31 July 2019 by the World Data System International Technology Office atthe University of Victoria. The purpose of the survey wasto determinethe current state of institutions’ data management systems and processes, andgauge their interest in technical support for existing repositories. It further served asan opportunity to introduce members of the WDS to the new ITO office. The survey provideda first look at the current state of the WDS members technology,their expertise, interests, needs and expectations.

Canada’s own tenure as Chair of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) resulted in Canada hosting the 2019 OGP Summit on Ottawa, and Canada continues to show leadership in the G7 Science Ministers group. The September 2017 statement from the G7 Science Ministers’ meeting highlighted Global Research Infrastructures and Open Science and supported the work of the G7 Open Science Working Group. &nbsp
