Abstract

In this paper, the results of mechanical strength tests of thin conductive Ag and Au layers created on Cordura composite substrate using the thermal vapor deposition method are presented. The resistance of the conductive layers to the bending and tensile stresses was tested and changing the surface resistance of the test structures was accepted as a criterion. The layers created on unmodified and plasma-treated surfaces have been examined. As a result of the surface modification, the electrical and mechanical properties of the thin Ag and Au metal structures have been improved. The results of measurements of surface resistance changes during strength tests and SEM microscopic studies of stressed samples indicate the high mechanical strength of the electroconductive layers deposited on Cordura, which may be the basis for the application of such technology in textronics applications.

Abstract

The critical fluctuations at second order structural transitions in a bulk crystal may affect the dissipation of mechanical probes even if completely external to the crystal surface. Here we show that noncontact force microscope dissipation bears clear evidence of the antiferrodistortive phase transition of SrTiO3, known for a long time to exhibit a unique, extremely narrow neutron scattering "central peak". The noncontact geometry suggests a central peak linear response coupling connected with strain. The detailed temperature dependence reveals for the first time the intrinsic central peak width of order 80 kHz, two orders of magnitude below the established neutron upper bound., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Obtaining a robust superconducting state in atomically precise nanographene (NG) structures by proximity to a superconductor could foster the discovery of topological superconductivity in graphene. On-surface synthesis of such NGs has been achieved on noble metals or metal oxides, however, it is still absent on superconductors. Here, we present a synthetic method to induce superconductivity to polymeric chains and NGs adsorbed on the superconducting Nb(110) substrate covered by thin Ag films. Using atomic force microscopy at low-temperature, we characterize the chemical structure of each sub-product formed on the superconducting Ag layer. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy further allows us to elucidate electronic properties of these nanostructures, which consistently show a superconducting gap. We foresee our approach to become a promising platform for exploring the interplay between carbon magnetism and superconductivity at the fundamental level., 17 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

INTRODUCTION Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is found naturally in meat and animal products. It contains a corrin ring with mineral cobalt. Physiologic functions of vitamin B12 include [...], Individuals following vegetarian diets are at risk for developing vitamin B12 deficiency owing to suboptimal intake. As vitamin B12 is essential for the synthesis of nucleic acids, erythrocytes and in the maintenance of myelin, deficiency may result in a variety of symptoms. Some of these symptoms may be severe while others may be irreversible. The objective of this review was to assess vitamin B12 deficiency, based on reported serum vitamin B12, among individuals adhering to different types of vegetarian diets. A systematic literature search was carried out using multiple search engines including PubMed, Medline, CINAHL plus, ERIC, Nursing and Allied Health Collection and Nursing/Academic Edition. The inclusion criteria consisted of original studies that assessed serum vitamin B12, studies written in English, non-case studies and studies that reported actual percentages of vitamin B12 deficiency. Forty research studies were included. The deficiency prevalence among infants reached 45%. The deficiency among the children and adolescents ranged from 0 to 33.3%. Deficiency among pregnant women ranged from 17 to 39%, dependent on the trimester. Adults and elderly individuals had a deficiency range of 0-86.5%. Higher deficiency prevalence was reported in vegans than in other vegetarians. Thus, with few exceptions, the reviewed studies documented relatively high deficiency prevalence among vegetarians. Vegans who do not ingest vitamin B12 supplements were found to be at especially high risk. Vegetarians, especially vegans, should give strong consideration to the use of vitamin B12 supplements to ensure adequate vitamin B12 intake. Vegetarians, regardless of the type of vegetarian diet they adhere to, should be screened for vitamin B12 deficiency. 33. Mechanical dissipation from charge and spin transitions in oxygen-deficient SrTiO3 surfaces

Abstract

Bodies in relative motion separated by a gap of a few nanometers can experience a tiny friction force. This non-contact dissipation can have various origins and can be successfully measured by a sensitive pendulum atomic force microscope tip oscillating laterally above the surface. Here, we report on the observation of dissipation peaks at selected voltage-dependent tip-surface distances for oxygen-deficient strontium titanate (SrTiO3) surface at low temperatures (T = 5 K). The observed dissipation peaks are attributed to tip-induced charge and spin state transitions in quantum-dot-like entities formed by single oxygen vacancies (and clusters thereof, possibly through a collective mechanism) at the SrTiO3surface, which in view of technological and fundamental research relevance of the material opens important avenues for further studies and applications. © 2018, The Author(s).

Abstract

The exclusive electroproduction of omega mesons, ep -> e omega p, has been studied in the kinematic range 3 pi^+pi^-pi^0. The exclusive (ep -> e omega p) cross section in the above kinematic region is 0.108 +- 0.014(stat.) +- 0.026(syst.) nb. The reaction ep -> e phi p, phi -> pi^+pi^-pi^0, has also been measured. The cross sections, as well as the cross-section ratios omega/rho and omega/phi, are presented as a function of W and Q^2. Thus, for the first time, the properties of omega electroproduction can be compared to those of rho^0, phi and J/psi electroproduction at high W., Comment: 15 pages including 4 figures

Abstract

Dijet production has been studied in neutral current deep inelastic e+p scattering for 470 < Q**2 < 20000 GeV**2 with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 38.4 pb**{-1}. Dijet differential cross sections are presented in a kinematic region where both theoretical and experimental uncertainties are small. Next-to-leading-order (NLO) QCD calculations describe the measured differential cross sections well. A QCD analysis of the measured dijet fraction as a function of Q**2 allows both a precise determination of alpha_s(M_Z) and a test of the energy-scale dependence of the strong coupling constant. A detailed analysis provides an improved estimate of the uncertainties of the NLO QCD cross sections arising from the parton distribution functions of the proton. The value of alpha_s(M_Z), as determined from the QCD fit, is alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.1166 +- 0.0019 (stat.) {+ 0.0024}_{-0.0033} (exp.)} {+ 0.0057}_{- 0.0044} (th.)., 32 pages including 5 figures and 23 tables. Abstract

The distribution of the azimuthal angle for the charged hadrons has been studied in the hadronic centre-of-mass system for neutral current deep inelastic positron-proton scattering with the ZEUS detector at HERA. Measurements of the dependence of the moments of this distribution on the transverse momenta of the charged hadrons are presented. Asymmetries that can be unambiguously attributed to perturbative QCD processes have been observed for the first time., Comment: 19 pages - 4 figures. Included referee's comments

Abstract

The e^+p charged-current deep inelastic scattering cross sections, $d\sigma/dQ^2$ for Q^2 between 200 and 60000 GeV^2, and $d\sigma/dx$ and $d\sigma/dy$ for Q^2 > 200 GeV^2, have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA. A data sample of 47.7 pb^-1, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 300 GeV, has been used. The cross section $d\sigma/dQ^2$ falls by a factor of about 50000 as Q^2 increases from 280 to 30000 GeV^2. The double differential cross section $d^2\sigma/dxdQ^2$ has also been measured. A comparison between the data and Standard Model (SM) predictions shows that contributions from antiquarks ($\bar{u}$ and $\bar{c}$) and quarks (d and s) are both required by the data. The predictions of the SM give a good description of the full body of the data presented here. A comparison of the charged-current cross section $d\sigma/dQ^2$ with the recent ZEUS results for neutral-current scattering shows that the weak and electromagnetic forces have similar strengths for Q^2 above $M^2_W, M^2_Z$. A fit to the data for $d\sigma/dQ^2$ with the Fermi constant $G_F$ and $M_W$ as free parameters yields $G_F = (1.171 \pm 0.034 (stat.) ^{+0.026}_{-0.032} (syst.) ^{+0.016}_{-0.015} (PDF)) \times 10^{-5} GeV^{-2}$ and $M_W = 80.8 ^{+4.9}_{-4.5} (stat.) ^{+5.0}_{-4.3} (syst.) ^{+1.4}_{-1.3} (PDF) GeV$. Abstract

The production of D*+-(2010) mesons in deep inelastic scattering has been measured in the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-1. The decay channels D*+ -> D0 pi+(+c.c.), with D0 -> K- pi+ or D0 ->K- pi- pi+ pi+, have been used to identify the D mesons. The e+p cross section for inclusive D*+- production with 1, Comment: 35 pages, 9 figures. Correction 7/10/99: Figure 9 has been updated. Abstract

A search for the leptonic decays of W bosons produced in the reaction e^+ p\to e^+ W^\pm X at a centre-of-mass energy of 300 GeV has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 47.7 pb^-1 . Three events consistent with W\to e\nu decay are found, giving a cross section of 0.9 +1.0 -0.7 \pm 0.2 pb, in good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. The corresponding 95% C.L. upper limit on the cross section is 3.3 pb. A search for the decay W\to \mu\nu has a smaller selection efficiency and yields no candidate events. Limits on the cross section for W production with large hadronic transverse momentum have been obtained. A search for high-transverse-momentum isolated tracks in events with large missing transverse momentum yields results in good agreement with Standard Model expectations, in contrast to a recent report by the H1 collaboration of the observation of an excess of such events., Comment: 17 pages including 7 figures and 2 tables, final version for Phys.Lett

Abstract

The potential antithrombotic action of losartan, the AT1 receptor antagonist, in an experimental model of venous thrombosis in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto rats (WKY) was tested. The involvement of nitric oxide and prostacyclin in this effect was also studied. Venous stasis was induced by ligation of the vena cava. Losartan, after administration of a single, hypotensive dose (10 mg/kg, p.o.), significantly reduced the thrombus weight in SHR but not in WKY. The antithrombotic activity of losartan in SHR was abolished by NG-nitro L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) (30 mg/kg s.c.) but not by indomethacin (2.5 mg/kg s.c.). No changes in primary hemostasis, platelet aggregation, coagulation parameters such as activated partial thromboplastin time, prothrombin time, euglobulin clot lysis time, and fibrinogen level, either in SHR or in WKY rats, were found. Our results indicate the NO-dependent mechanism in the antithrombotic effect of losartan on venous thrombosis in SHR.
