This article reports surface characteristics obtained by electrophoretic deposition assisted polishing (EPDAP) of AISI 316L stainless steel. The experiments were planned using full factorial design (24) approach. The control parameters selected were grit size, axial load, rotational speed, and polishing time. The analysis of results shows significant improvement in surface reflection after EPDAP process. The best surface finish was achieved for the parameters as-grit size 2,000, axial load of 12 N, rotational speed of 1,500 rpm, and polishing time of 10 min. The polished surface shows reduction in surface roughness from 0.75 µm to 0.046 µm after EPDAP. Thus a significant improvement in percentage reduction in surface roughness was 93.92% achieved. The mechanism of serrated chip formation during high-speed turning of Inconel 718 using PCBN cutting tools has been investigated with the aid of scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy. A conceptual model of chip formation has been developed knowing the chip morphology. It is followed by the analysis of chip segmentation frequency and the chip forms. Further, the chip segment forms and geometry were quantitatively characterized as a function of machining parameters and the cutting edge geometry using statistical methods.
