1. Modeling the Compton Camera Response for Extended Voxel Sources

Abstract: The analysis and interpretation of coincidence events in a Compton camera requires the comparison of the expected rates of observed events from sources with various emission rates, energy spectra and spatial distributions. Radioactive source distributions are often represented by the activity distributed among numerous voxels; each voxel having uniform internal activity and spectra within a cube. In this paper a mathematical model is constructed that predicts the expected rate of coincident Compton events from the rate of emissions from a single voxel source. This detailed model incorporates (1) the finite voxel size, (2) the blurring of the “Compton cone” by the limitations of energyresolution in the detectors and (3) the uncertainty in the Compton cone-axis due to the limited spatial resolution and ‘lever-arm’ separation between the coincident interactions. The resultant rates can be used to generate the system response matrix for source reconstruction and, therefore, are directly applicable in list-mode MLEM sourcereconstruction algorithms.

Abstract: Radiation mapping has attracted widespread research attention and increased public concerns on environmental monitoring. Regarding materials and their configurations, radiation detectors have been developed to identify the position and strength of the radioactive sources. However, due to the complex mechanisms of radiation-matter interaction and data limitation, high-performance and low-cost radiation mapping is still challenging. Here, we present a radiation mapping framework using Tetris-inspired detector pixels. Applying inter-pixel padding for enhancing contrast between pixels and neural networks trained with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation data, a detector with as few as four pixels can achieve high-resolution directional prediction. A moving detector with Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) further achieved radiation position localization. Field testing with a simple detector has verified the capability of the MAP method for source localization. Our framework offers an avenue for high-quality radiation mapping with simple detector configurations and is anticipated to be deployed for real-world radiation detection.

Abstract: Abstract Introduction Risankizumab has demonstrated superior efficacy compared to other psoriasis treatments, including secukinumab, adalimumab, and ustekinumab; switching to risankizumab from other psoriasis treatments has shown superior clinical and quality of life (QoL) outcomes. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of directly switching patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis and a suboptimal response to interleukin (IL)-17 inhibitors (secukinumab or ixekizumab) to risankizumab. 10. A Low-Cost C-band Active Reflector for InSAR deformation monitoring

Abstract: InSAR often demands the installation of artificial reflectors, usually represented by Passive Corner Reflectors (PCR). This occurs when in the imaged areas the coherence is low, and the density of Persistent Scatterers (PS) is scarce or even non-existent. For missions based on C-band sensor as Sentinel-1, PCRs capable of providing a high phase accuracy are cumbersome, and heavy, and the installation is difficult and costly. For this reason, the use of Active Reflectors (AR), compact and smaller with respect to PCRs, can be a valid alternative especially in mountain vegetated or snow-covered areas, or glaciers. The use of these devices has not yet largely spread due to their high sensitivity over long interval to annual/seasonal temperature range of variation which reduces their reliability. This work focuses on the analysis of the performance of a C band low-cost AR tested in a real field campaign based on the interferometric processing of Sentinel-1 images aimed at monitoring a forested slope, located in Andorra, partially collapsed some years ago. Phase stability is investigated using data acquired during an experimental campaign carried out in where also several PCRs have been installed. The experimental tests confirm that the device is capable to provide a millimetric accuracy over a significant temporal interval and can be used as reference point for a network of PCR installed in instable areas.

Abstract: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) present a serious medical and social issue of modern society. DME is one of the most common complications of DR and a frequent cause of a sudden decrease in visual acuity and the onset of disability. The review describes the main links of DME pathogenesis, including the participation of inflammatory cytokines, glycation products, reactive oxygen species, vascular endothelial growth factor and various cellular damages. The existing classifications of the disease, instrumental methods of diagnosis and treatment are presented, primarily those using angiogenesis inhibitors alone or in combination with laser treatment and intravitreal injection of an implant with dexamethasone. Various methods of surgical treatment of DR, which can impact the course of DME, are analyzed, including vitreoretinal surgery using vitrectomy with or without membrane peeling of the internal limiting and epiretinal membranes. Factors predicting the effectiveness of these surgical interventions are listed: these can be based on the general somatic condition of the patient and on the results of optical coherence tomography.

Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Abstract: The prompt and in-situ assessment of non-gamma ray emitting radionuclides such as Sr-90 remains an outstanding challenge, particularly in radiological emergency response and consequence management situations. We have developed a new concept to quantitatively assess a wide range of radionuclides, including beta-only emitters, using coplanar-grid CdZnTe detectors that provide depth-of-interaction sensing. By combining measurements with and without an electron absorber, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting and identifying Sr-90 and other radionuclides with a sensitivity of about 1 $\mu$Ci/m$^2$ or 3.7x10$^4$ Bq/m$^2$, which is 10\% of the Derived Response Level, in less than 60 minutes. The new compact instrument can be used in the field or mobile laboratories to quickly assess a wide range of samples with sufficient sensitivity and specificity to provide critical guidance in the response after radiological incidents., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Abstract: Many industrial enterprises use electroplating processes that lead to the formation of water containing heavy metal ions such as chromium, copper, zinc, nickel, and others. Such water is a dangerous source of environmental pollution. Most heavy metal ions belong to hazard classes I–II, they have carcinogenic and mutagenic properties, and have a cumulative effect.The literature analysis showed that there is positive experience in the use of steelmaking slags in the processes of cleaning contaminated water of various origins from heavy metals.The study examines the effect of acid activation on the adsorption‑structural characteristics of filtering materials created based on steelmaking slag. It is shown that during the interaction of some acids with slag, new crystallographic phases are formedon its surface, and contact with other acids leads to the leaching of ions and their transition to the aqueous phase. It has been established that during acid activation, the specific surface area increases by 57–132 times compared to the original material.

Abstract: Abstract The main goal of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4, g-CN) in both bulk and nanosheet forms, which have been surface-modified with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), as photocatalysts for the degradation of acid orange 7 (AO7), a model dye. The photodegradation of AO7 dye molecules in water was used to test the potential photocatalytic properties of these powder materials under two different lamps with wavelengths of 368 nm (UV light) and 420 nm (VIS light). To produce Ag NPs (Ag content 0.5, 1.5, and 3 wt%) on the g-CN materials, a new synthesis route based on a wet and low-temperature method was proposed, eliminating the need for reducing agents. The photodegradation activity of the samples increased with increasing silver content, with the best photocatalytic performances achieved for bulk g-CN samples and nanosheet silver-modified samples (with the highest content of 3 wt% Ag) under UV light, i.e., more than 75% and 78%, respectively. The VIS-induced photocatalytic activity of both examined series was higher than that of UV. The highest activities of 92% and 98% were achieved for the 1.5% Ag-modified g-CN bulk and nanosheet materials. This research presents an innovative, affordable, and environmentally friendly chemical approach to synthesizing photocatalysts that can be used for degrading organic pollutants in wastewater treatment.

Abstract: Abstract Radiation mapping has attracted widespread research attention and increased public concerns on environmental monitoring. Regarding materials and their configurations, radiation detectors have been developed to identify the position and strength of the radioactive sources. However, due to the complex mechanisms of radiation-matter interaction and data limitation, high-performance and low-cost radiation mapping is still challenging. Here, we present a radiation mapping framework using Tetris-inspired detector pixels. Applying inter-pixel padding for enhancing contrast between pixels and neural networks trained with Monte Carlo (MC) simulation data, a detector with as few as four pixels can achieve high-resolution directional prediction. A moving detector with Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) further achieved radiation position localization. Field testing with a simple detector has verified the capability of the MAP method for source localization. Our framework offers an avenue for high-quality radiation mapping with simple detector configurations and is anticipated to be deployed for real-world radiation detection.

Abstract: This paper characterizes the actual science performance of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as determined from the six month commissioning period. We summarize the performance of the spacecraft, telescope, science instruments, and ground system, with an emphasis on differences from pre-launch expectations. Commissioning has made clear that JWST is fully capable of achieving the discoveries for which it was built. Moreover, almost across the board, the science performance of JWST is better than expected; in most cases, JWST will go deeper faster than expected. Abstract: Aging is an evolutionary paradox. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain it, but none fully explains all the biochemical and ecologic data accumulated over decades of research. We suggest that senescence is a primitive immune strategy which acts to protect an individual's kin from chronic infections. Older organisms are exposed to pathogens for a longer period of time and have a higher likelihood of acquiring infectious diseases. Accordingly, the parasitic load in aged individuals is higher than in younger ones. Given that the probability of pathogen transmission is higher within the kin, the inclusive fitness cost of infection might exceed the benefit of living longer. In this case, programmed lifespan termination might be an evolutionarily stable strategy. Here, we discuss the classical evolutionary hypotheses of aging and compare them with the pathogen control hypothesis, discuss the consistency of these hypotheses with existing empirical data, and present a revised conceptual framework to understand the evolution of aging.

Abstract: By combining radiation detection technologies with robotics sensing, the ability to continuously conduct gamma-ray imaging using freely-moving systems was demonstrated in 2015.1 This new method, which was named free-moving 3D Scene Data Fusion (SDF), was then applied to mapping radioactive contamination and to contextualizing the extent of contamination and the efficacy of radiological clean-up efforts.2,3 Since then, further studies into the types of radiation detection systems to which SDF could be applied resulted in the discovery and demonstration that neutron activity could be mapped using neutron-sensitive CLLBC scintillators, arrays of pix-elated CZT detectors could be used to create multi-modal imagers, and more rudimentary detector systems such as arrays of four CsI modules could still achieve good-quality mapping by inferring source positioning through the encoded modulation of source-to-detector distance. This paper provides an overview of the SDF technology, highlights recent measurements leveraging SDF-equipped systems, discusses the continued development of quantitative algorithms4,5 and their ramifications for developing autonomous SDF-capabilities, and summarizes future directions of research and application development for free moving radiation detection systems.

Abstract: The research was aimed at analyzing modern algorithms for diagnosing lesions in multiple sclerosis on MRI images. Multiple sclerosis is a severe disease of the central nervous system and ranks first among the causes of disability in patients of young working age. In connection with the development of computer vision and machine learning technologies, the relevance of using these technologies for medical diagnostics is growing. Such approaches are necessary for the effective development and implementation of diagnostic systems using artificial intelligence. Modern algorithms and models for lesion segmentation were selected and implemented. Material and methods. The paper presents CV features of diagnosing multiple sclerosis on MRI images, existing data sets: ISBI-2015, MSSEG-2016, MSSEG-2021; existing algorithms and models for lesion segmentation: U-Net, nnU-Net, TransUnet, TransBTS, UNETR, Swin UNETR. Results and discussion. The architectures and models of nnU-Net, UNETR, Swin UNETR were trained and compared at ISBI2015 with various parameters and loss functions. Four MRI sequences were used: T2-WI, T2-FLAIR, PD, MPRAGE. Lesion segmentation was approved by certified experienced neuroradiologists. Conclusions. The approaches described in the paper including data processing, model training, and results analysis, focused on the selection and development of high-quality computer vision algorithms for identifying multiple sclerosis lesions in MRI images. Identification and segmentation of demyelination foci is a necessary step for diagnosing the disease, as well as for calculating and interpreting more meaningful indicators of disease severity and progression.

Abstract: The study is devoted to considering the effectiveness of modern approaches to the development of diagnostic technology for analyzing MRI images in neuro-oncology, based on artificial intelligence (AI) and computer vision. Such approaches are necessary for rapid and diagnostically effective analysis to implement the principle of individualized medicine. Material and methods. An analysis of the effectiveness of the choice of AI technologies for the formation of processes of segmentation and classification of neuro-oncological MRI images has been presented. AI was trained on its own annotated database (SBT Dataset), containing about 1000 clinical cases based on archival data from preoperative MRI studies at the Federal Neurosurgical Center (Novosibirsk, Russian Federation), in patients with astrocytoma, glioblastoma, meningioma, neuroma, and with metastases of somatic tumors, with histological and histochemical postoperative confirmation. Results and discussion. The effectiveness and efficiency of the developed technologies was tested during the international BraTS competition, in which it was proposed to segment and classify cases from a dataset of neuro-oncological patients prepared by the competition organizers. Conclusions. The methodological approaches proposed in the article in the development of diagnostic systems based on AI and the principles of computer vision have shown high efficiency at the level of dozens of world leaders and can be used to develop software and hardware systems for diagnostic neuroradiology with the functions of a “doctor’s assistant.”

Abstract: Abstract Background Various Positive End-Expiratory Pressure (PEEP) titration strategies have been proposed to optimize ventilation in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). We aimed to compare PEEP titration strategies based on electrical impedance tomography (EIT) to methods derived from respiratory system mechanics with or without esophageal pressure measurements, in terms of PEEP levels and association with recruitability. Abstract: BackgroundST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) requires revascularization treatment, preferably via primary percutaneous coronary interventions (pPCI). There is a lack of data about contemporary management of STEMI in Latin America.MethodsThis was a multicenter, multinational, prospective, and dynamic registry of patients undergoing pPCI in Latin America for STEMI (STEMI/LATAMI Registry) that was carried out in nine centers from five countries (Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, and the Dominican Republic) between June 2021 and June 2023. All interventionalists involved in the study were originally trained at the same institution (Centro de Estudios en Cardiología Intervencionista, Buenos Aires, Argentina). The primary objective was to evaluate procedural and in-hospital outcomes of pPCI in STEMI and in-hospital outcome in the Latin America (LATAM) region; as secondary endpoints, we analyzed the following subgroups: differences between pPCI vs. pharmaco-invasive or late presenters, gender, elderly and very elderly patients, cardiogenic shock outcomes, and causes of STEMI.ResultsIn total, 744 STEMI patients who underwent PCI between June 2021 and June 2023 in five countries (nine centers) in our continent were included; 76.3% had a pPCI, 8.1% pharmaco-invasive PCI, and 15.6% had late STEMI PCI. There were no differences in region or center when we evaluated in-hospital and 30 days of death. The rate of procedural success was 96.2%, and the overall in-hospital mortality rate was 2.2%. In the subgroup of pPCI, mean symptom onset-to-balloon time was 295.3 ± 246 min, and mean door-to-balloon time was 55.8 ± 49.9 min. The femoral approach was chosen in 60.5%. In 3.0% of patients, the left main disease was the culprit artery, with 1.63 ± 1.00 stents per patient (564 drug-eluting stents and 652 bare metal stents), with 34 patients receiving only plain optimal balloon angioplasty. Definitive stent thrombosis was related to the infarct artery as the primary cause of STEMI in 7.5% of patients. The use of assistant mechanical devices was low, at 2.1% in the pPCI group. Abstract: Drug-associated bullous pemphigoid has been shown to follow long-term gliptin (dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors) intake. This study aimed at identifying risk factors for gliptin-associated bullous pemphigoid among patients with type 2 diabetes. A retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary centre among diabetic patients exposed to gliptins between the years 2008–2021. Data including demographics, comorbidities, medications, and laboratory results were collected using the MDClone platform. Seventy-six patients with type 2 diabetes treated with dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors who subsequently developed bullous pemphigoid were compared with a cohort of 8,060 diabetic patients exposed to dipeptidyl-peptidase 4 inhibitors who did not develop bullous pemphigoid. Abstract: The ability to map and estimate the activity of radiological source distributions in unknown three-dimensional environments has applications in the prevention and response to radiological accidents or threats as well as the enforcement and verification of international nuclear non-proliferation agreements. Such a capability requires well-characterized detector response functions, accurate time-dependent detector position and orientation data, a digitized representation of the surrounding 3D environment, and appropriate image reconstruction and uncertainty quantification methods. We have previously demonstrated 3D mapping of gamma-ray emitters with free-moving detector systems on a relative intensity scale using a technique called Scene Data Fusion (SDF). Here we characterize the detector response of a multi-element gamma-ray imaging system using experimentally benchmarked Monte Carlo simulations and perform 3D mapping on an absolute intensity scale. Abstract: Purpose: to assess morphological and functional parameters of the eyeball in patients with neovascular glaucoma (NVG) and diabetic macular edema (DME) after vitreoretinal interventions.Material and methods. This study involved 60 patients (60 eyes), aged 59 ± 12 including 34 men and 26 women. The patients were divided into three groups: group 1 — 19 patients (19 eyes) with NVG and DME after a vitreoretinal surgery (VRS) for proliferative diabetic retinopathy performed no earlier than a year ago. If DME was found within 6 months after the surgery, a drug was administered intravitreally (3 loading injections given with monthly intervals). The patients’ history contained cataract phacoemulsification with an implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL). Group 2 (23 patients, 23 eyes) consisted of persons with stage III primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) with the duration of the glaucomatous process of up to 5 years, who received no laser or surgical antiglaucomatous interventions. The history of these patients also contained phacoemulsification operations with IOL implantation. Group 3 (18 patients, 18 eyes), which was composed of patients with pseudophakia but no symptoms of glaucoma or other eye pathology, served as control.Results. The opening of the anterior chamber angle (ACA) in NVG (group 1) was 2.73 times smaller (p = 0.034) than in POAG (Group 2) and 3.69 times smaller than in the control group (p = 0.034). Neovascularization of the iris and the ACA could primarily be seen in patients with NVG (84 %). Goniosynechiae in the ACA of group 1 patients were seen 6.35 times more often than in group 2 patients and 14.45 times more often than in group 3 patients. Rubeosis occurred in group 1 patients 4.65 times as often as in group 2 and 6.64 times more often than in group 3 patients (p = 0.034). Statistically significant differences of morphometric parameters of the optic disc between groups 1 and 2, on the one hand, and group 3, on the other hand were found. Meanwhile, the figures for groups 1 and 2 were statistically comparable, which is explained by the same degree of severity of the glaucomatous process in these groups. The analysis of indices of computer perimetry MD, MS and sLV showed a developed glaucomatous process in groups 1 and 2. The revealed changes are based on pathognomonic factors. In particular, they may be caused by the prior surgical intervention affecting the vitreoretinal interface in group 1 patients.Conclusion. The onset of NVG is primarily caused by a grave course of proliferative diabetic and changes in the ACA profile, due to the formation of synechiae. Regardless of the risk factors, the result of surgical treatment depends on the condition of the ischemic retina and the anterior segment of the eye. Thus, the assessment of the morphofunctional parameters of the eye in patients with NVG and DME after VRS is of great interest. Changes in such parameters as the degree of openness of the ACA, distance from the iris to the IOL, the presence of rubeosis and synechia may be used to determine the methods and tactics of surgery, which will eliminate the pathophysiological factors of the onset and progression of CVH, and reduce postoperative complications.

The source of radiation is sometimes constrained to a single point-like source, in which case the location of the point source can be found using techniques such as maximum likelihood. Recent advancements have shown the ability to locate point sources in 2D and even 3D, but few have studied the effect of intervening material on the problem. In this work we examine gamma-ray data taken from a freely moving system and develop voxelized 3-D models of the scene using data from the onboard LiDAR. Ray casting is used to compute the distance each gamma ray travels through the scene material, which is then used to calculate attenuation assuming a single attenuation coefficient for solids within the geometry. Parameter estimation using maximum likelihood is performed to simultaneously find the attenuation coefficient, source activity, and source position that best match the data. Abstract: Abstract Treatment-free remission (TFR) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is safe under adequate molecular monitoring, but questions remain regarding which factors may be considered predictive for TFR. Argentina Stop Trial (AST) is a multicenter TFR trial showing that 65% of patients sustain molecular remission, and the prior time in deep molecular response (DMR) was associated with successful TFR. Luminex technology was used to characterize cytokines in plasma samples. Using machine learning algorithms, MCP-1 and IL-6 were identified as novel biomarkers and MCP-1low/IL-6low patients showed eightfold higher risk of relapse. These findings support the feasibility of TFR for patients in DMR and MCP-1/IL-6 plasma levels are strong predictive biomarkers.

Abstract: The Polaris-LAMP multi-modal 3-D gamma-ray imager is a radiation mapping and imaging platform which uses a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) detector integrated with a contextual sensor localization and mapping platform. The integration of these systems enables a free-moving radiation imaging capability with proximity mapping, coded-aperture, and Compton imaging modalities, which can create 3-D reconstruction of photon sources from tens of keV to several MeV. Gamma-ray events are recorded using a segmented cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector (Polaris-H Quad by H3D Inc., Ann Arbor, MI, USA), while scene data are derived from a contextual sensor and computation package developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory which includes GPS, laser ranging, and inertial measurement sensors. An onboard computer uses these inputs to create rapidly updating pose (10 Hz) and 3-D scene estimates using a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm. The precise gamma-ray event location and timing resolution of the Polaris CZT sensor enables Compton imaging above several hundred keV, while photon sources at lower images are localized using coded-aperture imaging techniques. The multi-modal imaging concept enables imaging of diverse radiation sources spanning from the 59-keV emission of 241Am to the 1.1 and 1.3 MeV lines of 60Co. This work focuses on the description of the operational principles of the detector system and demonstrating the 3-D imaging performance in a variety of source detection and mapping scenarios. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate mapping complex environments, including both point source and distributed-source environments using proximity, coded-aperture, and Compton imaging modalities. Furthermore, we show the successful use of the system to perform measurements in high-background environments through analysis of arrays of uranium hexafluoride cylinders at the Paducah UF6 project site.
