Abstract

PG 1553+113 is one of the few blazars with a convincing quasi-periodic emission in the gamma-ray band. The source is also a very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray emitter. To better understand its properties and identify the underlying physical processes driving its variability, the MAGIC Collaboration initiated a multiyear, multiwavelength monitoring campaign in 2015 involving the OVRO 40-m and Medicina radio telescopes, REM, KVA, and the MAGIC telescopes, Swift and Fermi satellites, and the WEBT network. The analysis presented in this paper uses data until 2017 and focuses on the characterization of the variability. The gamma-ray data show a (hint of a) periodic signal compatible with literature, but the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray data do not show statistical evidence for a periodic signal. In other bands, the data are compatible with the gamma-ray period, but with a relatively high p-value. The complex connection between the low and high-energy emission and the non-monochromatic modulation and changes in flux suggests that a simple one-zone model is unable to explain all the variability. Abstract

Axion-like particles (ALPs) are pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons that emerge in various theories beyond the standard model. These particles can interact with high-energy photons in external magnetic fields, influencing the observed gamma-ray spectrum. This study analyzes 41.3 hrs of observational data from the Perseus Galaxy Cluster collected with the MAGIC telescopes. We focused on the spectra the radio galaxy in the center of the cluster: NGC 1275. By modeling the magnetic field surrounding this target, we searched for spectral indications of ALP presence. Despite finding no statistical evidence of ALP signatures, we were able to exclude ALP models in the sub-micro electronvolt range. Our analysis improved upon previous work by calculating the full likelihood and statistical coverage for all considered models across the parameter space. Consequently, we achieved the most stringent limits to date for ALP masses around 50 neV, with cross sections down to $g_{a\gamma} = 3 \times 10^{-12}$ GeV$^{-1}$., Comment: 25 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Physics of the Dark Universe

Abstract

We perform the first broadband study of Mrk421 from radio to TeV gamma rays with simultaneous measurements of the X-ray polarization from IXPE. The data were collected within an extensive multiwavelength campaign organized between May and June 2022 using MAGIC, Fermi-LAT, NuSTAR, XMM-Newton, Swift, and several optical and radio telescopes to complement IXPE. During the IXPE exposures, the measured 0.2-1 TeV flux is close to the quiescent state and ranges from 25% to 50% of the Crab Nebula without intra-night variability. Throughout the campaign, the VHE and X-ray emission are positively correlated at a $4\sigma$ significance level. The IXPE measurements unveil a X-ray polarization degree that is a factor of 2-5 higher than in the optical/radio bands; that implies an energy-stratified jet in which the VHE photons are emitted co-spatially with the X-rays, in the vicinity of a shock front. The June 2022 observations exhibit a rotation of the X-ray polarization angle. Despite no simultaneous VHE coverage being available during a large fraction of the swing, the Swift-XRT monitoring unveils an X-ray flux increase with a clear spectral hardening. It suggests that flares in high synchrotron peaked blazars can be accompanied by a polarization angle rotation, as observed in some flat spectrum radio quasars. Finally, during the polarization angle rotation, NuSTAR data reveal two contiguous spectral hysteresis loops in opposite directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise), implying important changes in the particle acceleration efficiency on $\sim$hour timescales., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics. 29 pages, 22 figures. Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are explosive transient events occurring at cosmological distances, releasing a large amount of energy as electromagnetic radiation over several energy bands. We report the detection of the long GRB~201216C by the MAGIC telescopes. The source is located at $z=1.1$ and thus it is the farthest one detected at very high energies. The emission above \SI{70}{\GeV} of GRB~201216C is modelled together with multi-wavelength data within a synchrotron and synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) scenario. We find that SSC can explain the broadband data well from the optical to the very-high-energy band. For the late-time radio data, a different component is needed to account for the observed emission. Differently from previous GRBs detected in the very-high-energy range, the model for GRB~201216C strongly favors a wind-like medium. The model parameters have values similar to those found in past studies of the afterglows of GRBs detected up to GeV energies., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables. Abstract

The BL Lac 1ES 2344+514 is known for temporary extreme properties (e.g., a shift of the synchrotron SED peak energy $\nu_{synch,p}$ above 1keV). While those extreme states were so far observed only during high flux levels, additional multi-year observing campaigns are required to achieve a coherent picture. Here, we report the longest investigation of the source from radio to VHE performed so far, focusing on a systematic characterisation of the intermittent extreme states. While our results confirm that 1ES 2344+514 typically exhibits $\nu_{synch,p}>$1keV during elevated flux periods, we also find periods where the extreme state coincides with low flux activity. A strong spectral variability thus happens in the quiescent state, and is likely caused by an increase of the electron acceleration efficiency without a change in the electron injection luminosity. We also report a strong X-ray flare (among the brightest for 1ES 2344+514) without a significant shift of $\nu_{synch,p}$. During this particular flare, the X-ray spectrum is among the softest of the campaign. It unveils complexity in the spectral evolution, where the common harder-when-brighter trend observed in BL Lacs is violated. During a low and hard X-ray state, we find an excess of the UV flux with respect to an extrapolation of the X-ray spectrum to lower energies. This UV excess implies that at least two regions contribute significantly to the infrared/optical/ultraviolet/X-ray emission. Using the simultaneous MAGIC, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and AstroSat observations, we argue that a region possibly associated with the 10 GHz radio core may explain such an excess. Finally, we investigate a VHE flare, showing an absence of simultaneous variability in the 0.3-2keV band. Using a time-dependent leptonic modelling, we show that this behaviour, in contradiction to single-zone scenarios, can instead be explained by a two-component model., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract

Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. Abstract

As a result of the floristic investigations of the Vučje hill carried out betwenn 2008 and 2010, 534 plant taxa belonging to 277 genera and 67 plant families were recorded. Phytogeographical analysis showed that the species of eurasian area type are the most abundant ones. There are 10 endemic taxa in flora of investigated area. The hemicriptophytic character of flora with significant contribution of therophytes and geophytes, is established by analyzing the presence of plant life forms. 31 species are listed as protected or strictly protected in national legislature, while some of them are of international importance for conservation.

Abstract

In 2007 catastrophic fire on Vidlič Mountain had been occurred. It had been burned down nearly 1000 hectares of forest. That year vegetation was totally destroyed. Ecosystems affected by fire are those with great changes in variety of ecological parameters and they can recover by natural succession. Post fire areas are being occupied by pioneer plants which start one natural cycle. Total organic acids content in plants from fire affected forest was studied and the same plant species from forest which had not been affected by fire were taken as a control. Total organic acids content for all plants from forest affected by fire was higher than for plants from fire non affected forest except one plant (Aegopodium podagraria).

Abstract

The results of study of medicinal plants from Pirot County (E Serbia), have been presented. The presence of a large number of plant species that are of accepted application in official and also in traditional medicine has been registered. The period of harvesting and collection of plant material by months related to natural characteristics of the area has been shown. For each species, plant drugs that are produced from have been listed, the type of habitat has been noted, as well as an overview of main active ingredients that effect remedial action. The representatives of the rare medicinal species are separately reviewed which is essential for their protection and management of resources of medicinal plants in the area.

Abstract

Razvojem virtualizacije u računarstvu pojavila se potreba za naprednijim povezivanjem, konfiguracijom i upravljanjem mrežnih uređaja i odgovarajućih aplikacija i servisa. Korištenje klasičnog načina upravljanja i promatranja računalnih mreža pokazuje sve više svoje nedostatke. Sve više se pokazuje potreba za programibilnosti računalnih mreža, kao i za standardnim modelom kojim se definiraju karakteristike mrežnih komponenti. Primjer takvog standardnog modela je YANG (Yet Another Next Generation). U prvom dijelu ovog rada ukratko se prikazuju trenutni trendovi u upravljanju osnovnih elemenata računalnih mreža (preklopnika i usmjernika). Definira se pojam MDP (Model Driven Programmability), razvoj MDP mreža te njihove osnovne karakteristike i način primjene. U drugom djelu rada opisuje se standard YANG, zbog čega je razvijen, navedene su njegove osnovne karakteristike te načini primjene.

Abstract

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a serious and common complication in patients admitted to intensive care unit (ICU) and contributes to mortality. Multidrug Gram- negative bacteria such as Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae are frequently associated with VAP in ICU. A prospective study was set up in three ICUs of the University Hospital Center Zagreb and one ICU in General Hospital Pula from September 2017 to March 2018. Antibiotic susceptibility was determined by broth microdilution method. Production of extended- spectrum β-lactamases (ESBLs) was determined by double-disk synergy test and carbapenemases by Hodge and carbapenem inactivation method (CIM). The genes encoding ESBLs, carbapenemases of class A, B and D and qnr genes were determined by PCR. In total 97 Gram- negative bacteria isolates were analyzed. P. aeruginosa demonstrated high resistance rates for imipenem and meropenem with 74% and 68% of resistant strains, respectively. Moderate resistance rates were observed for ceftazidime andpiperacillin/tazobactam, ciprofloxacin and gentamicin (44%). All except three A. baumannii isolates, were resistant to carbapenems and to all other antibiotics apart from colistin and amikacin. Eight A. baumannii isolates were positive for blaOXA-23 and 12 for blaOXA-24 genes. Four K. pneumoniae and two E. cloacae strains were ESBL positive and harboured group 1 of CTX-M β- lactamases. Three P. mirabilis strains were positive for plasmid-mediated ampC β-lactamase of CMY family. Two carbapenem- resistant K. pneumoniae harboured OXA-48 and one carbapenem- resistant E. cloacae VIM-1. A high proportion of multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa, K. pneumoniae and extensively resistant A. baumannii was reported. Acquired resistance mechanisms, mainly production of carbapenemases and ESBLs were dominant in A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae, respectively. Resistance of P. aeruginosa isolates was more likely due to upregulation of efflux pumps or porin loss. A marked diversity of β- lactamases was identified in Enterobacteriaceae.

29. Evaluation of potentially toxic element contamination in the riparian zone of the River Sava

Abstract

Contaminated sediments transported onto the river terrace during high water events can contribute significant quantities of potentially toxic elements to riparian soils. Seven trace elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) were analysed in the river sediment and riparian soil of the River Sava and their spatial distribution, potential toxicity and ecological risk levels were evaluated. The results showed that levels of all the trace metals were enriched to varying extents in both the sediment (As, Cr, Ni, and Pb) and soil (Ni) when compared to reference levels for sediments and European soils. Mean concentrations of trace metals in sediment and soil, apart from Pb, increased downstream in the River Sava. The similar increasing trend of these elements in sediment and soil may be explained by their increased load due to anthropogenic pressures (As, Cr, Ni, Pb and Zn in sediment and the significant accumulation of Ni in soil) and frequent periodic flooding (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn in sediment and Cd in soil are influenced by both high water events and natural factors such as the geological substrate), particularly in lowland regions. In this study, soluble As, Cd, Cr, Cu and Ni fractions in sediment and soil LT 10% indicated their low mobility. The exceptions were readily soluble Pb and Zn in the sediment and soil at some sampling sites. In the lower reaches, levels of Pb in sediment was indicative of a medium environmental hazard, while there was a high environmental hazard in the upper reaches with the average Pb content in sediment higher than the PEL. Pollution factors for Pb in soil indicated a medium environmental hazard in the upper and middle reaches and a high environmental hazard at some sites in the lower stretches of the Sava River, although total Pb content in soil was within the range proposed for European soils.

Abstract

Tourism market consists of tourism demand and tourism supply. In order to achieve the success of the destination at tourism market it is necessary to stimulate the tourist demand with a quality tourist product. The increase of tourism demand is accompanied by increased consumption which directly affects the economic benefit. Tourism demand encompasses a number of factors such as the number of arrivals and tourist overnights, the motives of arrivals, tourist activities in the destination ... It is therefore necessary, by analyzing tourist demand, to determine tourist's preferences in order to form a quality tourist product. In this article, tourism demand in the Republic of Croatia will be analized through certain factors such as: number of tourist overnights, tourist motivation, tourism activities in a tourist destination, the average number of days of tourist stay in the destination ... In addition to demand analysis, and consumption analysis and to determine the impact of tourism demand on tourism consumption. The aim of this article is to determine the trends and the mutual impact of tourist demand and tourist consumption in the Republic of Croatia through quantitative and qualitative analyzes. Based on the analysis obtained through the SWOT analysis, advantages and disadvantages, strengths, weaknesses, will be identified, and suggestions for improvement will be provided.
