The Deep Atmosphere Venus Investigation of Noble gases, Chemistry, and Imaging (DAVINCI) mission described herein has been selected for flight to Venus as part of the NASA Discovery Program. DAVINCI will be the first mission to Venus to incorporate science-driven flybys and an instrumented descent sphere into a unified architecture. The anticipated scientific outcome will be a new understanding of the atmosphere, surface, and evolutionary path of Venus as a possibly once-habitable planet and analog to hot terrestrial exoplanets. The primary mission design for DAVINCI as selected features a preferred launch in summer/fall 2029, two flybys in 2030, and descent sphere atmospheric entry by the end of 2031. The in situ atmospheric descent phase subsequently delivers definitive chemical and isotopic composition of the Venus atmosphere during a cloud-top to surface transect above Alpha Regio. These in situ investigations of the atmosphere and near infrared descent imaging of the surface will complement remote flyby observations of the dynamic atmosphere, cloud deck, and surface near infrared emissivity. The overall mission yield will be at least 60 Gbits (compressed) new data about the atmosphere and near surface, as well as first unique characterization of the deep atmosphere environment and chemistry, including trace gases, key stable isotopes, oxygen fugacity, constraints on local rock compositions, and topography of a tessera., Comment: 41 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in the Planetary Science Journal

We present experimental data and computational analysis of the formation of GaN nanowires on graphene virtual substrates. We show that GaN nanowires on graphene exhibit nitrogen polarity. We employ the DFT-based computational analysis to demonstrate that among different possible configurations of Ga and N atoms only the N-polar one is stable. We suggest that polarity discrimination occurs due to the dipole interaction between the GaN nanocrystal and $\pi$-orbitals of the graphene sheet., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, J. Mater. Chem. We uncover a novel mechanism for superscattering of subwavelength resonators closely associated with the physics of bound states in the continuum. We demonstrate that superscattering occurs as a consequence of constructive interference driven by the Friedrich-Wintgen mechanism, and it may exceed the currently established limits for the cross-section of a single open scattering channel, within the channel itself. We develop a non-Hermitian model to describe interfering resonances of quasi-normal modes to show that this effect can only occur for scatterers violating the spherical symmetry, and therefore it cannot be predicted with the classical Mie solutions. Our results reveal unusual physics of non-Hermitian systems having important implications for functional metadevices.

Focused laser beams allow controlling mechanical motion of objects and can serve as a tool for assembling complex micro and nano structures in space. While in a vast majority of cases small particles experience attractive gradient forces and repulsive radiation pressure, introduction of additional degrees of freedom into optomechanical manipulation suggests approaching new capabilities. Here we analyze optical forces acting on a high refractive index silicon sphere in a focused Gaussian beam and reveal new regimes of particles anti-trapping. Multipolar analysis allows separating an optical force into interception and recoil components, which have a completely different physical nature resulting in different mechanical actions. In particular, interplaying interception radial forces and multipolar resonances within a particle can lead to either trapping or anti-trapping scenarios, depending of the overall system parameters. At the same time, the recoil force generates a significant azimuthal component along with an angular-dependent radial force. Those contribution enable enhancing either trapping or anti-trapping regimes and also introduce bending reactions. These effects are linked to the far-field multipole interference resulting and, specifically, to its asymmetric scattering diagrams. The later approach is extremely useful, as it allows assessing the nature of optomechanical motion by observing far-field patterns. Multipolar engineering of optical forces, being quite general approach, is not necessarily linked to simple spherical shapes and paves a way to new possibilities in microfluidic applications, including sorting and micro assembly of nontrivial volumetric geometries., Comment: 26 pages, 13 figures

Unique and flexible properties of non-Hermitian photonic systems attract ever-increasing attention via delivering a whole bunch of novel optical effects and allowing for efficient tuning light-matter interactions on nano- and microscales. Together with an increasing demand for the fast and spatially compact methods of light governing, this peculiar approach paves a broad avenue to novel optical applications. Here, unifying the approaches of disordered metamaterials and non-Hermitian photonics, we propose a conceptually new and simple architecture driven by disordered loss-gain multilayers and, therefore, providing a powerful tool to control both the passage time and the wave-front shape of incident light with different switching times. For the first time we show the possibility to switch on and off kink formation by changing the level of disorder in the case of adiabatically raising wave fronts. At the same time, we deliver flexible tuning of the output intensity by using the nonlinear effect of loss and gain saturation. Since the disorder strength in our system can be conveniently controlled with the power of the external pump, our approach can be considered as a basis for different active photonic devices., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Modern nanophotonics has witnessed the rise of "electric anapoles", destructive interferences of electric dipoles and toroidal electric dipoles, actively exploited to cancel electric dipole radiation from nanoresonators. However, the inherent duality of Maxwell's equations suggests the intriguing possibility of "magnetic anapoles", involving a nonradiating composition of a magnetic dipole and a magnetic toroidal dipole. Here, we predict, fabricate and observe experimentally via a series of dark field spectroscopy measurements a hybrid anapole of mixed electric and magnetic character, with all the dominant multipoles being suppressed by the toroidal terms in a nanocylinder. We delve into the physics of such exotic current configurations in the stationary and transient regimes and predict a number of ultrafast phenomena taking place within sub-ps times after the breakdown of the hybrid anapole. Based on the preceding theory, we design a non-Huygens metasurface featuring a dual functionality: perfect transparency in the stationary regime and controllable ultrashort pulse beatings in the transient.

We analyze numerically the radiation and channeling properties of ultrarelativistic electrons and positrons propagating through a periodically bent diamond crystal grown on a straight single-crystal diamond substrate. Such systems can be called hetero-crystals and they are one of the experimentally realized samples for the implementation of crystalline undulators. We state that in such systems the channeling and radiation properties of projectiles are sensitive to the projectile particles energy as well as on the beam propagation direction, i.e. on whether the beam of particles enters the crystal from the side of substrate or from the side of periodically bent crystal. The ability to manipulate electric and magnetic components of light at the nanoscale delivered by dielectric and semiconductor components is paving the way towards novel types of sources and nanoantennae with exceptional electromagnetic signatures, flexible and tunable metasurface architectures, enhanced light harvesting structures, etc. Recently, the anapoles states arising from the destructive interference of basic multipoles and their toroidal counterparts have been widely exploited to cancel radiation from an individual scattering channel of isolated nanoresonators, while displaying nontrivial near fields. As such, anapole states have been claimed to correspond to non-radiating sources. Nevertheless, these states are commonly found together with high order multipole moments featuring non-zero overall far-field. In this paper, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate a fully non-scattering state governed by a novel 4-fold hybrid anapole with all the dominant multipoles suppressed by their corresponding toroidal (retarded) terms, i.e. a dark analogue of the superscattering effect. This invisibility state, however, allows for non-trivial near-field maps enabled by the unique interplay of the resonant Mie-like and Fabry-Perot modes as demonstrated by the quasi-normal modal expansion. Moreover, the hybrid anapole state is shown to be protected; the spectral position of the non-scattering point remains unperturbed in the presence of a substrate with significantly high refractive index. We experimentally verify our novel effect by means of dark field measurements of the scattering response of individual nanocylinders. The results are of high demand for efficient sensing and Raman scattering setups with enhanced signal-to-noise ratio, highly transmissive metasurfaces for phase manipulation, holograms, and a large span of linear and non-linear applications in dielectric nanophotonics., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures

$\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry is a unique platform for light manipulation and versatile use in unidirectional invisibility, lasing, sensing, etc. Broken and unbroken $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric states in non-Hermitian open systems are described by scattering matrices. A multilayer structure, as a simplest example of the open system, has no certain definition of the scattering matrix, since the output ports can be permuted. The uncertainty in definition of the exceptional points bordering $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric and $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry-broken states poses an important problem, because the exceptional points are indispensable in applications as sensing and mode discrimination. Here we derive the proper scattering matrix from the unambiguous relation between the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonian and scattering matrix. We reveal that the exceptional points of the scattering matrix with permuted output ports are not related to the $\mathcal{PT}$ symmetry breaking. Nevertheless, they can be employed for finding a lasing onset as demonstrated in our time-domain calculations and scattering-matrix pole analysis. Our results are important for various applications of the non-Hermitian systems including encircling exceptional points, coherent perfect absorption, $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric plasmonics, etc., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

In this paper we present the results of a systematic numerical analysis of the channeling properties of electrons and positrons in oriented straight and periodically bent diamond(110) crystals. We analyse dependence of the intensity of the radiation emitted on the projectile energy as well as on the bending amplitude. The analysis presented is based on the grounds of accurate numerical simulations of the channeling process. The simulation parameters, such as the crystal orientation, thickness and bending parameters of the crystals as well as the energy of the projectiles, were chosen to match those used in past and ongoing experiments. The peculiarities which appear in the radiation spectra are attributed to the interplay of various radiation mechanisms. Several of NASA missions (TESS, JWST, WFIRST, etc.) and mission concepts (LUVOIR, HabEx, and OST) emphasize the exploration and characterization of exoplanets, and the study of the interstellar medium. We anticipate that a much broader set of chemical environments exists on exoplanets, necessitating data from a correspondingly broader set of chemical reactions. Similarly, the conditions that exist in astrophysical environments are very different from those traditionally probed in laboratory chemical kinetics studies. These are areas where quantum mechanical theory, applied to important reactions via well-validated chemical kinetics models, can fill a critical knowledge gap. Quantum chemical calculations are also introduced to study interior of planets, photochemical escape, and many critical chemical pathways (e.g. prebiotic environments, contaminations, etc.) After years of development of the relevant quantum chemical theories and significant advances in computational power, quantum chemical simulations have currently matured enough to describe real systems with an accuracy that competes with experiments. These approaches, therefore, have become the best possible alternative in many circumstances where performing experiments is too difficult, too expensive, or too dangerous, or simply not possible. In this white paper, several existing quantum chemical studies supporting exoplanetary science, planetary astronomy, and astrophysics are described, and the potential positive impacts of improved models associated with scientific goals of missions are addressed. In the end, a few recommendations from the scientific community to strengthen related research efforts at NASA are provided.

We predict peculiar changes in spectral distributions of radiation emitted by ultra-relativistic positrons and electrons in periodically bent crystals with variation of the bending amplitude. It is shown that the changes, being sensitive to the projectile energy, manifest themselves differently for negatively and positively charged projectiles. We demonstrate that the features observed are due to the interplay of different radiation mechanisms occurring in periodically bent crystals. The observations are important for design, practical realization and channeling experiments with periodically bent crystals as the key element of the novel light sources. A model of multidimensional mixmaster-type vacuum universe is considered. It belongs to a class of pseudo-Euclidean chains characterized by root vectors. An algebraic approach of our investigation is founded on construction of Cartan matrix of the spacelike root vectors in Wheeler -- DeWitt space. Kac -- Moody algebras can be classified according to their Cartan matrix. By this way a hidden symmetry of the model considered is revealed. It is known, that gravitational models which demonstrate chaotic behavior are associated with hyperbolic Kac -- Moody algebras. The algebra considered in our paper is not hyperbolic. The square of Weyl vector is negative. The mixmaster-type universe is associated with a simply-laced Lorentzian Kac -- Moody algebra.
