We report experimental results on the formation of microvoids in bulk sapphire produced through the single-shot illumination of the sample by near-infrared, simultaneously spatially and temporally focused (SSTF) laser beams. Compared with the cases of tightly focused femtosecond Gaussian and flattop beams, the SSTFs produce internal microvoids with significantly larger volumes and without cracks between the interaction sites, which may be beneficial for applications in volumetric data storage and for the studies of exotic, super-dense elemental phases contained in the densified shells surrounding the microvoids.

Multi-functional metal surfaces with simultaneous superhydrophobic and antireflective properties have a wide range of industrial, medical, and defense applications. Rapid fabrication of such multifunctional surfaces on irregularly shaped metals and on a large scale has been a challenge. Here we demonstrate an approach for rapid, standoff fabrication of multi-functional surfaces with super-hydrophobic and antireflective properties on irregularly-shaped samples, by texturing them with femtosecond laser filaments in air, followed by chemical fluorination treatment. Two types of metals with a variety of curved surfaces have been processed at a standoff distance of 1 m: the type 304 stainless steel and the type Ti–6Al–4V titanium alloy. Through laser processing and fluorination, multi-functional surfaces with the water contact angle of over 150° and diffused reflectance below 9%, over the wavelength range from 240 to 2500 nm, have been realized on both metals. Our results suggest that this technique could enable cost-effective and large-scale fabrication of irregularly-shaped, multi-functional surfaces that can be useful for various applications.

Nonlinear self-channeling (filamentation) of intense, ultrashort laser pulses in air has been extensively studied with ultrafast, near-infrared and visible laser sources [1] . Recently these investigations advanced to longer wavelengths, as well as to the regime of few-cycle pulses, where the effects associated with the carrier-envelope phase (CEP) of the laser pulse become important. It has been shown that spectral interference in the white light generated on filamentation of an ultrafast, short-wave infrared laser source carries CEP information [2] . Here, we report using this spectral interference for single-shot characterization of the CEP of an ultrafast, mid-infrared (MIR) laser source at 3.9 µm wavelength.

Air lasing in the nitrogen molecular ion is not well understood because the complex physics responsible for gain is interwoven with pulse propagation in an extreme environment. Here we use a short gas jet to limit the interaction length, thereby removing the propagation effects. We report on several mechanisms that contribute to the decay of gain in different conditions, and experimentally isolate two decay timescales: the decay of long-term gain due to collisional state mixing, and short-term gain that cannot be explained by population inversion. To test the former, we control the inelastic electron scattering rate by varying the gas concentration while keeping the propagation length fixed, and predict the change of the decay using a model of collisional state mixing. We show that the same mechanism causes the decay of rotational wave packets in the states of the ion. Finally, we simulate the complex modulations of gain due to rotational wave packets and the propagation of the probe pulse through the evolving rotationally excited and inverted medium.

We examine the utility of beam shaping for femtosecond filament-induced breakdown spectroscopy at long range. Diffraction-resistant and self-healing Bessel and Airy beams offer the advantage of longitudinally extended working zones.

We investigate the nonlinear propagation of intense, two-cycle, carrier-envelope phase (CEP) stable laser pulses at 1.7 μm center wavelength in air. We observe CEP-dependent spectral interference in the visible part of the forward-propagating white light generated on propagation. The effect is robust against large fluctuations of the input pulse energy. This robustness is enabled by rigid clamping of both the peak optical field and the phase of the propagating waveform, which has been revealed by numerical simulations. The CEP locking can enhance the yield of the CEP-dependent strong-field processes in gaseous media with long-wavelength drivers, while the observed spectral interference enables single-shot, stand-off CEP metrology in the atmosphere.

Nonlinear self-channeling (filamentation) of intense, ultrashort laser pulses in air has numerous potential applications ranging from remote sensing in the atmosphere to lightning control [1]. Recent progress in optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification (OPCPA) technology pushes the investigations of filamentation into short-wave infrared [2] and mid-wave infrared [3] regimes. At longer wavelengths, the propagation dynamics is affected by the presence of windows of anomalous dispersion due to the trace constituents of air [4,5]. Multiple odd harmonics of the infrared driver pulse can be easily detected and analyzed.

We pump low-pressure nitrogen gas with ionizing femtosecond laser pulses at 1.5 $\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$ wavelength. The resulting rotationally excited ${\mathrm{N}}_{2}^{+}$ molecular ions generate directional, forward-propagating stimulated and isotropic spontaneous emissions at 428 nm wavelength. Through high-resolution spectroscopy of these emissions, we quantify rotational population distributions in the upper and lower emission levels. We show that these distributions are shifted with respect to each other, which has a strong influence on the transient optical gain in this system. Although we find that electronic population inversion exists in our particular experiment, we show that sufficient dissimilarity of rotational distributions in the upper and lower emission levels could, in principle, lead to gain without net electronic population inversion.

We report on the experimental demonstration of a technique for rapid fabrication of black silicon with enhanced absorption in the short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) region, directly in the ambient air, and at a standoff distance of about 1 m. Our approach is based on the irradiation of a surface of the crystalline silicon, coated by a 100-nm-thick aluminum film, by femtosecond laser pulses that are propagating in the air in the self-channeling regime known as laser filamentation. By adjusting the processing parameters, we achieve up to 50% absorptivity enhancement in the SWIR spectral range between 1.5 and 2.5 μm wavelength, compared to the case when no aluminum coating is applied prior to the laser processing under the otherwise same conditions. Microscopic and elemental analyses of the processed samples suggest that the absorptivity enhancement is due to both the changes in the morphology of the microstructures formed on the sample surface by the laser irradiation and the modification of the energy-band structure of silicon, as a result of aluminum implantation. Our technique could enable rapid and cost-effective fabrication of silicon-based opto-electronic devices for applications in the infrared spectral range.

Filament-induced ablation represents an attractive scheme for long-range material identification via optical spectroscopy. However, the delivery of laser energy to the target can be severely hindered by the stochastic nature of multiple-filamentation, ionization of ambient gas, and atmospheric turbulence. In order to mitigate some of these adverse effects, we examine the utility of beam shaping for femtosecond filament-induced breakdown spectroscopy with Gaussian and structured (Laguerre-Gaussian, Airy, and Bessel-Gaussian) beams in the nonlinear regime. Interaction of filaments with copper, zinc, and brass targets was studied by recording axially-resolved broadband emission from the filament-induced plasma. The laser-solid coupling efficacy was assessed by inferring thermodynamic parameters such as excitation temperature and electron density. While under our experimental conditions the ablation rate with Gaussian- and Laguerre-Gaussian beams is found to be similar, the Airy and Bessel-Gaussian beams offer the advantage of longitudinally extended working zones. These results provide insights into potential benefits of structuring ultrafast laser beams for standoff sensing applications.

Femtosecond laser micromachining on back surface have been investigated experimentally using simultaneously spatially and temporally focused (SSTF) vortex beams. Uniform ring-shape ablations have been made on back surface of borosilicate glass. The feasibility of laser micromachining using femtosecond SSTF vortex beam has been demonstrated.

The mid-infrared OPCPA-based laser facilities have recently reached the critical power for self-focusing in air [1]. This ensures the demonstration of the major difference between the mid- and near-infrared filamentation in air: the odd optical harmonics, harshly suppressed by the material dispersion and phase-mismatch in the near-infrared (800 nm), gain reliable energies in the mid-infrared (3.9 µm) filament [1,2]. Another issue that makes mid-infrared filamentation different from the near-infrared one is a lot of molecular vibrational lines belonging to atmospheric constituents and located in the mid-infrared range [3]. As the result the mid-infrared region of interest becomes subdivided into the bands of normal and anomalous dispersion, the former of which leads to the pulse splitting in temporal domain, while the latter produces the confined light bullet. We simulate the 3.9-µm filamentation using Forward Maxwell equation. We include the tunnel ionization and transient photocurrent as the collapse arresting mechanism, which balances dynamically the instantaneous third-order medium response (similarly to 800-nm filamentation). The key feature that allows us to quantify the losses due to absorption bands is the accurate account of the complex linear absorption index. The absorption index obtained from Mathar model [3] is interpolated to the fine frequency grid (step of about 0.1 THz), and the refractive index is matched according to Kramers-Kronig relations [4]. If the initial Gaussian pulse has a center wavelength of 3.9 µm and a duration of 80 fs FWHM, the energy loss in the carbon dioxide (CO_2) absorption band at 4.3 µm is about 1% in the linear propagation regime. But when we take the 80-mJ pulse (about 3 critical powers for self-focusing), the Kerr-induced spectral broadening develops significantly before the clamping level of intensity is reached. In the collimated beam geometry about 2% of the initial pulse energy is absorbed on the CO_2 band before the filament is formed. In the developed filament all the partial losses due to plasma, harmonic generation and absorption on vibrational lines grow up rapidly with the propagation distance, and the absorption on vibrational lines overwhelms all the rest ones. Indeed the new mechanism is revealed – the linear absorption is enhanced by the nonlinear spectral broadening. Thus, the nonlinearly enhanced linear absorption (NELA) is formed. The rotational transitions are estimated to consume as much energy as the free electron generation mechanism [5], which is less than NELA for 3.9-µm filament. In conclusion, in the 3.9-µm filament the excitations of molecular absorption lines are estimated to provide the major optical losses in the atmosphere as compared with plasma and high-frequency conversion. Air lasing is a concept that is based on the utilization of the constituents of air as a gain medium in a standoff, impulsive, laser-like optical source. While both forward-propagating and backward-propagating laser emissions could be generated, the backward-propagating emission is of the most practical significance for its potential to enable single-ended remote sensing schemes. I will review recent results on air lasing from singly ionized nitrogen molecular ions N2+, pumped through femtosecond laser filamentation in air. So far, lasing has been demonstrated only in the forward direction, and the mechanisms that enable population inversion have been highly controversial.

Plasma channels induced in air by femtosecond-laser filamentation are useful for many applications, including attosecond physics and spectroscopy and remote sensing. By appropriately employing a surrounding auxiliary dressing beam to continuously supply energy to the filament, the natural range of the plasma column has been extended by at least one order of magnitude.

We have investigated channeling the DC dielectric breakdown of a 20 cm air gap by a sequence of four concatenated plasma filaments, independently produced by four focused, 5-ps-long laser pulses. The polarity of the applied DC voltage, as well as the temporal delay between the four pulses, was varied from a few to 400 ns, in an attempt to find the optimum direction and speed of the stepping filament sequence. We have found that the filament sequence reliably channeled the breakdown and measurably reduced the breakdown threshold voltage, relative to that in the unguided breakdown. However, no meaningful dependence on either the polarity of the applied DC voltage or the stepping speed of the filament sequence was observed. Our results support the established scenario of channeling the DC air breakdown by laser filaments, which is primarily based on the creation of a reduced-density air channel bridging the discharge gap. The channeling mechanism associated with seeding the discharge leader by the filament plasma plays a negligible role.

We present a practical diagnostic for quantifying changes to the supercontinuum spectrum of an ultrashort laser pulse undergoing nonlinear propagation. The method allows a connection to be made between a nonlinear physics phenomenon and the specific regions of the angular spectrum that it affects. We apply this method to investigate interference between third-harmonic generation and self-phase modulation.

We review recent results on the propagation and self-focusing of intense femtosecond laser pulses with shaped beam profiles in transparent dielectric media. At sufficiently high optical power, beam shaping seeds into the transverse modulation instability and results in the deterministic placement of intense laser filaments within the beam profile. Resulting spatial filament distributions may be utilized for writing complex extended structures inside transparent dielectrics. Specific examples of beam shapes we will discuss are Bessel beams, optical vortices, Bessel beams of higher order, and Airy beams.

Through high-resolution spectroscopy of lasing on N 2 + ions at 428nm wavelength, we quantify optical gain and population inversion in the gain medium. We show that molecular rotations are the enabling effect in this lasing process.

We quantify the dependence of the single-shot ablation threshold on the angle of incidence and polarization of a femtosecond laser beam, for three dissimilar solid-state materials: a metal, a dielectric and a semiconductor. Using the constant, linear value of the index of refraction, we calculate the laser fluence transmitted through the air-material interface at the point of ablation threshold. We show that, in spite of the highly nonlinear ionization dynamics involved in the ablation process, the so defined transmitted threshold fluence is universally independent of the angle of incidence and polarization of the laser beam for all three material types. Profiling of the intensity in femtosecond air filamentation has been performed experimentally using dependence of ablation threshold of gold on angle of incidence. We found that the peak intensity is strongly dependent on the external focusing.

In an earlier publication we demonstrated that by using pairs of pulses of different colors (e.g., red and blue) it is possible to excite a dilute ensemble of molecules such that lasing and/or gain-swept superradiance is realized in a direction toward the observer. This approach is a conceptual step toward spectroscopic probing at a distance, also known as standoff spectroscopy. In the present paper, we propose a related but simpler approach on the basis of the backward-directed lasing in optically excited dominant constituents of plain air, N 2 and O 2 . This technique relies on the remote generation of a weakly ionized plasma channel through filamentation of an ultraintense femtosecond laser pulse. Subsequent application of an energetic nanosecond pulse or series of pulses boosts the plasma density in the seed channel via avalanche ionization. Depending on the spectral and temporal content of the driving pulses, a transient population inversion is established in either nitrogen- or oxygen-ionized molecules, thus enabling a transient gain for an optical field propagating toward the observer. This technique results in the generation of a strong, coherent, counterpropagating optical probe pulse. Such a probe, combined with a wavelength-tunable laser signal(s) propagating in the forward direction, provides a tool for various remote-sensing applications. The proposed technique can be enhanced by combining it with the gain-swept excitation approach as well as with beam shaping and adaptive optics techniques.

Water is the major natural resource that enables life on our planet. Rapid detection of water pollution that occurs due to both human activity and natural cataclysms is imperative for environmental protection. Analytical chemistry–based techniques are generally not suitable for rapid monitoring because they involve collection of water samples and analysis in a laboratory. Laser‐based approaches such as laser‐induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) may offer a powerful alternative, yet conventional LIBS relies on the use of tightly focused laser beams, requiring a stable air–water interface in a controlled environment. Reported here is a proof‐of‐principle, quantitative, simultaneous measurement of several representative heavy‐metal contaminants in water, at ppm‐level concentrations, using ultraintense femtosecond laser pulses propagating in air in the filamentation regime. This approach is straightforwardly extendable to kilometer‐scale standoff distances, under adverse atmospheric conditions and is insensitive to the movements of the water surface due to the topography and water waves.

Laser–material interaction is the fascinating nexus where laser physics, optical physics, and materials science intersect. Applications span the range from high-intensity shock physics at the nanoscale to futuristic ideas like space propulsion using remotely located lasers. These papers were selected from the program of the 2018 International High Power Laser Ablation Symposium in Santa Fe, New Mexico, held 26–29 March 2018, or contributed later by our attendees. This conference was held on the 20th anniversary of our first meeting in 1998.

We combine conventional beam shaping with simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF) to generate femtosecond SSTF vortex beams. We demonstrate the utility of these beam structures by producing single-shot encryption of doughnut-shaped ablation marks on the back surfaces of glass plates. The SSTF enables this type of machining by significantly reducing the nonlinear beam distortions on propagation through the glass.

Plasma channel generation (or filamentation) using ultraintense laser pulses in dielectric media has a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from remote sensing to terahertz generation to lightning control. So far, laser filamentation has been triggered with the use of ultrafast pulses with axially symmetric spatial beam profiles, thereby generating straight filaments. We report the experimental observation of curved plasma channels generated in air using femtosecond Airy beams. In this unusual propagation regime, the tightly confined main intensity feature of the axially nonsymmetric laser beam propagates along a bent trajectory, leaving a curved plasma channel behind. Secondary channels bifurcate from the primary bent channel at several locations along the beam path. The broadband radiation emanating from different longitudinal sections of the curved filament propagates along angularly resolved trajectories.

We use femtosecond higher-order Bessel beams for micromachining of borosilicate glass plates. The self-focusing of the beams inside the glass results in the production of beaded ring structures on the back surfaces of the plates.

we present the results of experimental and theoretical investigations for remote initiation of lasing in nitrogen and air by femtosecond filaments generated by laser pulses with different wavelengths, polarization and applying adaptive control methods

I will discuss experiments on dissociation and two-photon pumping of oxygen and nitrogen in air in the nanosecond and femtosecond pumping regimes. Interference between different emission mechanisms results in a pronounced forward-backward gain asymmetry.

Since its introduction over a decade ago, the spun birefringent single-mode optical fiber is increasingly being considered for current-sensing applications. In this paper, we study the behavior of such a fiber when it is bent into a sensing coil. We show that bending weakens the polarization-holding capability of the spun birefringent fiber and causes the average polarization state to slowly oscillate along the fiber, potentially degrading the performance of the current sensor. The amplitude of this oscillation increases with tighter bending. Both the amplitude and the period of this oscillation, which are important parameters for designing current-sensing coils, are calculated by applying an appropriate perturbation theory. An experiment confirming the theory is also reported.

Channeling an extended electrical breakdown of air by a laser beam is a long-standing challenge in applied laser science. Virtually all previously reported experiments on discharge channeling by femtosecond laser beams relied on the application of a single laser pulse and have been conducted with discharge gaps of less than one meter, in which case the direct ohmic heating of the laser-generated plasma by the applied DC electric field is the dominant channeling mechanism. We report a laboratory-scale demonstration of a channeling approach that makes use of concatenated plasma filaments produced by a sequence of multiple ultrashort laser pulses. Direct ohmic heating of the guiding channel is eliminated through the introduction of large temporal delays between the individual laser pulses in the pulse sequence. We propose an extension of this scheme to channeling kilometer-scale discharges, including natural lightning. Air lasing refers to the remote optical pumping of the constituents of ambient air that results in a directional laserlike emission from the pumped region. Intense current investigations of this concept are motivated by the potential applications in remote atmospheric sensing. Different approaches to air lasing are being investigated, but, so far, only the approach based on dissociation and resonant two-photon pumping of air molecules by deep-UV laser pulses has produced measurable lasing energies in real air and in the backward direction, which is of the most relevance for applications. However, the emission had a high pumping threshold, in hundreds of GW/cm^{2}. We demonstrate that the threshold can be virtually eliminated through predissociation of air molecules with an additional nanosecond laser. We use a single tunable pump laser system to generate backward-propagating lasing in both oxygen and nitrogen in air, with energies of up to 1 μJ per pulse.

We report the fabrication of large-area phase masks on thin fused-silica substrates that are suitable for shaping multi-terawatt femtosecond laser beams. We apply these phase masks for the generation of intense femtosecond optical vortices. We further quantify distortions of the vortex beam patterns that result from several common types of mask defects., 13 pages, 7 figures

We experimentally demonstrate that through conditioning dilute plasma in femtosecond laser filaments in air by an energetic nanosecond laser pulse, we reduce the breakdown voltage along the filament by up to the factor of 40.

We report a viable laser transmitter for free-space undersea communications. An all-fiber, picosecond, Watt-level master-oscillator-power-amplifier (MOPA) system at 1.5 mum based on rapid amplification of mode-locked pulses in heavily Er:Yb codoped phosphate fiber is combined with fiber pigtailed lithium niobate intensity modulator (pulse picker), to construct a fully integrated eye-safe transmitter operating at 65-Mb/s data rate, that can be used in intermediate-range (few kilometers) atmospheric communication links. For undersea use, the output of the MOPA system is frequency-tripled into the blue-green transparency window of ocean water. The wavelength conversion occurs in a simple single-pass setup utilizing a sequence of two periodically poled lithium niobate crystals, both of which are operated at room temperature. The conversion efficiency from fundamental to third harmonic reached 14% and resulted in generation of 140 mW of average power at 518 nm. The conversion efficiency can be straightforwardly increased threefold using properly antireflection-coated optics in the free-space part of the setup, and the data rate can be scaled up into the gigabit-per-second range by using a faster mode-locked oscillator in the MOPA system.

Amplification of ultrashort pulses in doped fibers is limited by an onset of nonlinear effects in the fiber. At the 1.5-mum wavelength, single-mode fibers typically have anomalous dispersion. The self-phase modulation combined with dispersion leads to instability of multinanojoule pulses in such fibers. Various techniques developed to amplify pulses beyond the nonlinearity limit typically rely on a delicate balance between dispersive and nonlinear effects in different parts of the laser system. We report a simple all-fiber alternative to these complex techniques that utilizes a rapid amplification of pulses in a short and heavily doped phosphate-glass active fiber. In our preliminary experiments, picosecond pulses at 1.5 mum generated by a passively mode-locked fiber oscillator at a repetition rate of 70 MHz are amplified in a 15-cm-long heavily Er-Yb codoped fiber amplifier to the average output power of 1.425 W. The pulse energy and peak power reach 20.4 nJ and 16.6 kW, respectively, while the pulse distortion is minimal in both temporal and spectral domains. Further power up-scaling is possible by using active phosphate fiber with a large mode area, in the amplifier stage

We report an all-fiber passively mode-locked femtosecond laser oscillator based on the heavily doped Er-Yb phosphate-glass active fiber. Only 20 cm of the gain fiber is sufficient to produce as much as 1.1 W of average output power at 1.5 /spl mu/m directly from the oscillator. The laser can be harmonically mode-locked at repetition rates ranging from 1.7 to 7.2 GHz by adjusting the polarization bias in the cavity. The pulsewidth varies from 300 to 570 fs at the lowest and the highest repetition rate, respectively, and the maximum peak pulse power exceeds 1 kW.

A four-level atom, driven by a coherent field, is considered. We show that under certain conditions complete quenching of spontaneous emission is possible. Hence the population inversion on some specific atomic transitions can be created using a very weak incoherent pumping. We investigate the physics of the effect using bare and dressed states. The proposed scheme may be useful, in principle, for generation of high-frequency and/or high power laser light.

We report the observation of forward-propagating UV stimulated emission in atmospheric nitrogen pumped, at a standoff distance of 2.6 m, by an energetic laser pulse at a wavelength of 1053 nm and with the duration in the picosecond range. The generated optical gain at 337 nm is seeded by third harmonic of the pump beam. This demonstration is an important step towards the development of techniques for standoff optical sensing in the atmosphere.

Self-focusing of ultrashort pulses in air is investigated by means of numerical simulations. The role of the vibrational Raman effect and its dependence on pulse chirp is studied, with results shedding new light on the interpretation of the measurements of the critical self-focusing power. We also discuss computational modeling issues important specifically for few-cycle pulses.

Our experiments show that the critical power for self-focusing collapse of femtosecond vortex beams in air is significantly higher than that of a flattop beam and grows approximately linearly with the vortex order. With less than 10% of initial transverse intensity modulation of the beam profiles, the dominant mode of self-focusing collapse is the azimuthal breakup of the vortex rings into individual filaments, the number of which grows with the input beam power. The generated bottlelike distributions of plasma filaments rotate on propagation in the direction determined by the sense of vorticity.

We densify dilute plasma in femtosecond laser filaments by heating it with energetic 200 picosecond-long laser pulses. Differently from the case of nanosecond heating, the densified plasma channels, under certain conditions, remain smooth and continuous.

A new and simple method of pumping short high-power optical fiber lasers and amplifiers is described. In our approach, several passive coreless optical fibers are brought into direct contact alongside a single rare-earth doped active fiber which constitutes the active medium of the laser (amplifier). Pump light is delivered through the passive coreless fibers and penetrates into the active fiber via evanescent field coupling. To enhance the pump absorption in the gain medium, high-order spatial modes are excited in the pump delivery fibers, and an active fiber with high concentration of the dopant ions is used. As a demonstration of the viability of our approach, test results are reported on a 12-cm-long Er/sup +3/-Yb/sup +3/ codoped phosphate glass fiber laser. The laser output reaches 5 W using 23-W pumping into six coreless fibers. Above threshold, the laser has /spl sim/24% optical-to-optical conversion efficiency (with /spl sim/64% being the theoretical maximum). The linearity of the input-output characteristic for the laser suggests that the output power can be scaled up by applying higher pump power.
