The new scheme of the rapid preconcentration of volatile organic substances followed by the thermodesorption and gas chromatographic determination by using a flame ionization detector is proposed for the analysis of air. The scheme implies a change in the geometry of the adsorbent layer in a column during the transition from adsorption to thermal desorption steps. The extraction of analytes is carried out in a wide tube, allowing quantitative adsorption at higher flow rates of the analyzed air passed through the magnetic sorbent held in a thin layer retained by a permanent magnet without any supporting frits. Novel magnetic adsorbents composed of magnetite or a zirconia/magnetite core and pyrocarbon shell are developed for this application. At the end of the adsorption step, the magnet moved out of the system, and the adsorbent transferred under the gravity force into a narrow tube, which provides the more efficient heating of the adsorbent and minimal blurring of the analyte zones during the subsequent thermal desorption. The proposed scheme allows a significant reduction (approximately 10 times) of the time required for the preconcentration of analytes, which is illustrated by the GC determination of alcohols (butanol-1, pentanol-1), phenol, and o-cresol in the air.

Solid-phase analytical derivatization (SPAD) is a promising hybrid sample preparation technique combining the clean-up and preconcentration of the sample in a single step. In this work, a novel SPAD method based on the preparation of trimethylsilyl (TMS) derivatives of steroid hormones (testosterone, estrone, DHT, estriol, estradiol, and progesterone) in Phenomenex Strata C18-E (100 mg, 1 mL) cartridges has been developed and applied for their GC-MS/MS determination in human urine samples. The proposed procedure allows the detection and quantification of steroids with limits of 1.0–2.5 and 2.5–5 ng/mL, respectively. These characteristics are comparable with those obtained with a conventional liquid–liquid extraction, while the recovery of analytes in the proposed SPAD procedure is higher. The major advantages of SPAD are a short derivatization time, high efficiency, and the possibility to automatize the procedure. However, its cost-effectiveness in routine practice is still questionable.

New composite adsorbents including silica supports (silica, aerosilogel, and diatomite) and carbon materials (multiwall carbon nanotubes and pyrolytic carbon) have been prepared and characterized. The analytical capabilities of the produced sorbents have been evaluated by their efficiency in the express pre-concentration of volatile organic compounds (butanol and phenols) from the air stream. The prepared surface-layered adsorbents containing multiwall carbon nanotubes placed onto the surface of aerosilogel by use of the carbon vapor deposition method with preloading cobalt nanostructures as a catalyst were found significantly more efficient than traditionally used graphitic carbon-based adsorbents Carbopacks B, C, and X. Additionally, a new adsorbent composed of diatomite Porochrome-3 support coated with a pyrocarbon layer was prepared. This low surface area composited adsorbent allowed both quantitative pre-concentration of phenol and isomeric cresols from the air and their thermal desorption. The developed adsorbents provided fast pre-concentration of selected phenols with a concentration factor of 2 × 103 in 5 min and were used for gas chromatographic determination of analytes in the air at low concentration levels starting from several μg/m3 with a flame ionization detector.

Micro-capillaries, capable of light-regulated binding and qualitative detection of divalent metal ions in continuous flow, have been realised through functionalisation with spiropyran photochromic brush-type coatings. Upon irradiation with UV light, the coating switches from the passive non-binding spiropyran form to the active merocyanine form, which binds different divalent metal ions (Zn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Cd2+), as they pass through the micro-capillary. Furthermore, the merocyanine visible absorbance spectrum changes upon metal ion binding, enabling the ion uptake to be detected optically. Irradiation with white light causes reversion of the merocyanine to the passive spiropyran form, with simultaneous release of the bound metal ion from the micro-capillary coating.

The combination of post-column derivatisation and visible detection are regularly employed in ion chromatography (IC) to detect poorly absorbing species. Although this mode is often highly sensitive, one disadvantage is the increase in repeating baseline artifacts associated with out-of-sync pumping systems. The work presented here will demonstrate the use of a second generation design paired emitter–detector diode (PEDD-II) detection mode offering enhanced sensitivity to transition metals in IC by markedly reducing this problem and also by improving signal noise. First generation designs demonstrated the use of a single integrated PEDD detector cell as a simple, small (15 × 5 mm), highly sensitive, low cost photometric detector for the detection of metals in IC. The basic principle of this detection mode lies in the employment of two linear light emitting diodes (LEDs), one operating in normal mode as a light source and the other in reverse bias serving as a light detector. The second generation PEDD-II design showed increased sensitivity for Mn(ii)- and Co(ii)-2-(pyridylazo)resorcinol (PAR) complexes as a result of two simultaneously acquiring detection cells – one analytical PEDD cell and one reference PEDD cell. Therefore, the PEDD-II employs two wavelengths whereby one monitors the analyte reaction product and the second monitors a wavelength close to the isosbestic point. The optimum LED wavelength to be used for the analytical cell was investigated to maximise peak response. The fabrication process for both the analytical and reference PEDD cells was validated by determining the reproducibility of detectors within a batch. The reproducibility and sensitivity of the PEDD-II detector was then investigated using signals obtained from both intra- and inter-day chromatograms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
