The objective of this work was to assess the viability of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) for ethanol production, as well as to estimate the energy and budget balances for the crop. Data from the agricultural and industrial production phases were evaluated. Those from the agricultural phase were estimated from a field experiment and used for comparison of sweet potato genotypes. Those from the industrial phase were estimated based on the literature on the fossil fuel energy and electricity consumed in the ethanol production process. With average yields of 35 Mg ha-1 roots and 12 Mg ha-1 dry stems, the output/input ratios were 6.64 and 1.93 for the energy and budget balances, respectively. For yields of 50 and 80 Mg ha-1 roots (17 and 27 Mg ha-1 dry stems, respectively), the indexes for energy balance were 7.16 and 7.68, respectively, and those for energy budget were 2.76 and 4.42. The obtained results confirm the great aptitude of the sweet potato crop for biofuel production.

The aim of the present study was to estimate the energy balance (output/input ratio) of the canola crop for biodiesel production, under Brazilian conditions. Fossil energy expended in the production of 600kg of oil per hectare was 7,146,537kcal. The estimated energy yield per hectare was 9,930,000kcal from the production of 1,500kg ha-1 of seeds (40% oil and 60% oil cake), which resulted in an energy balance of 1.39. Results indicated the viability of biofuel production from canola, but also showed the need to improve the technology used to increase the energy and economic balance ratios. RESUMO: O objetivo do trabalho foi estimar o balanço energético (razão output/input) da cultura da canola, nas condições brasileiras, para a produção de biodiesel. A energia fóssil dispendida na produção de 600kg de óleo por hectare foi de 7.146.537kcal. O rendimento energético estimado por hectare foi de 9.930.000kcal, a partir da produtividade de 1.500kg ha-1 de grãos (40% de óleo e 60% de torta), resultando no valor do balanço energético de 1,39. Os resultados indicam a viabilidade da produção do biocombustível com base na respectiva cultura, mas demonstram também a necessidade de aperfeiçoamento das tecnologias empregadas para que se aumentem os índices dos balanços energético e econômico.

A produção comercial de alface, em condições de elevadas temperaturas, tem sido afetada por problemas de ocorrência dos nematóides das galhas Meloidogyne spp. A utilização de cultivares resistentes é uma alternativa para o cultivo nestas condições. O presente trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o comportamento de famílias de alface quanto à resistência aos nematóides das galhas Meloidogyne spp. verificando a provável existência de família (s) homozigota (s) para o caráter. Foram utilizadas 39 famílias F2:3 de alface e as testemunhas Grand Rapids (resistente), Regina 71 (suscetível) e Verônica (suscetível), totalizando 48 plantas de cada família, 160 plantas da cultivar Grand Rapids, 160 plantas da cultivar Regina 71, 160 plantas da cultivar Verônica e 160 plantas da cultivar de tomate Santa Clara (utilizada para verificação da eficiência do inóculo). A partir da distribuição de freqüência das notas para incidência de galhas, obtidas através de uma escala de notas de 1 a 5, juntamente com o teste de c², evidenciaram-se a existência de 10 famílias homozigotas para resistência aos nematóides das galhas, as quais poderão ser utilizadas em futuros programas de melhoramento para o desenvolvimento de cultivares resistentes.The commercial production of lettuce, in high temperature conditions, has been affected by root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.). The use of resistant cultivars is an alternative for the cultivation in those conditions. The objective of this research was to evaluate the behavior of lettuce families with relation to the resistance to the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne spp., verifying the probable existence of homozygous families for that character. Forty-eight plants from each of 39 F2:3 families of lettuce and the controls 'Grand Rapids' (resistant), 'Regina 71' (susceptible) and 'Verônica' (susceptible) were used; 160 plants of cultivar Grand Rapids, 160 plants of cultivar Regina 71, 160 plants of cultivar Verônica and 160 plants of cultivar Santa Clara (used for verification of the efficiency of the inoculum). Following the distribution of frequency of the notes for root-knot incidence, obtained through a scale of notes from 1 to 5, together with the c² test, the existence of 10 homozygous families for resistance to the root-knot nematode was evidenced. These resistant families are a useful tool to be used in future breeding programs for the development of a resistant cultivar.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a viabilidade do emprego simultâneo de genes mutantes de amadurecimento e de coloração, nos locos norª, rin, og c e hp, em híbridos de tomateiro, com diferentes backgrounds e combinações genotípicas. O experimento foi conduzido em estufas, em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com 20 genótipos e três repetições. Houve tendência dos mutantes de amadurecimento (nor+/norª e rin+/rin) para reduzir a produção precoce de frutos, mas não a produção total. Genótipos portadores de um ou mais alelos norª, rin, hp e/ou og c apresentaram maior conservação de frutos na pós-colheita que genótipos normais. Genótipos rin+/rin apresentaram as piores colorações internas de frutos. Houve um efeito positivo de og c+/og c, og c/og c e/ou hp+/hp na coloração interna de genótipos normais, rin+/rin e nor+/norª, mas o efeito em genótipos rin+/rin não foi de magnitude suficiente para tornar a coloração interna final semelhante à de genótipos normais. As constituições genotípicas og c+/og c e og c/og c apresentaram efeitos semelhantes na melhoria da coloração interna dos frutos e da coloração da mucilagem placentária. As constituições genotípicas nor+/norªog c+/og c ou nor+/norª og c+/og c hp+/hp foram consideradas as mais promissoras, tanto para melhorar a conservação pós-colheita, quanto para manter ou melhorar a coloração interna dos frutos do tomateiro. The objective of this work was to evaluate the feasibility of simultaneous use of the ripening mutant (norª or rin) and color enhancing mutant genes (og c and/or hp) in tomato hybrids with different genotypic backgrounds and genotype combinations. The trial was set up in a plastic house, with in RCB design with 20 genotypes and 3 replications. Ripening mutant genotypes nor+/norª and rin+/rin reduced early yields, but not total yields. Genotypes bearing one or more mutants norª, rin, og c or hp showed improved shelf life in comparison to that of normal genotypes. The constitution rin+/rin showed the poorest internal color among the genotypes tested. There was a positive effect of og c+/og c, og c/og c and/or hp+/hp on the internal fruit color of normal nor+/norª and rin+/rin genotypes, but the effect in rin+/rin genotypes was not enough as to insure a final color similar to that of normal genotypes. Genotypic constitutions og c+/og c and og c/og c, in the og c locus, showed similar positive effects on both internal color and color of placentary jelly. The genotypic constitutions nor+/norªog c+/og c or nor+/norª og c+/og c hp+/hp were deemed the most promising genotypic combinations to attain improvements in both fruit shelf life and internal color.

The effects of the fruit ripening mutant gene alcobaça (alc) and color development mutants, old gold-crimson (ogc) and high pigment (hp), on yield and post-harvest quality of tomato fruits were investigated. Five tomato hybrids were obtained by crossing near isogenic lines with Flora-Dade background [Flora-Dade (alc+/alc+ ogc+/ogc+ hp+/hp+), TOM-559 (alc/alc ogc+/ogc+ hp+/hp+), TOM-591 (alc/alc ogc/ogc hp+/hp+), TOM-593 (alc/alc ogc+/ogc+ hp/hp), and TOM-589 (alc/alc ogc/ogc hp/hp)] with the pollen parent line Mospomorist (alc+/alc+ ogc+/ogc+ hp+/hp+). Hybrid fruit was harvested at the breaker stage and stored on shelves at 15oC and 60% relative humidity for 16 days, and then evaluated for firmness, development of red color, and carotenoid contents. The different genotypic combinations at the loci alc, ogc and hp had no effect on fruit yield. The alc+/alc hybrid genotype significantly increased fruit firmness and significantly delayed the development of red color in maturing fruit. Simultaneous usage of ogc+/ogc and hp+/hp promoted an increase in the red color and lycopene content of alc+/alc hybrids, but did not have any additional effect on fruit firmness.
