Population explosions of the stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) have become a serious concern for livestock producers near sugarcane mills in some regions of Brazil due to the insect’s massive reproduction on sugarcane byproducts and waste. Despite the limited efficiency of insecticides for controlling stable fly outbreaks, producers still rely on chemical control to mitigate the alarming infestations in affected areas. This study evaluated the susceptibility of S. calcitrans populations to cypermethrin in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Stable flies were tested from three field populations and two colonies, established from flies previously collected at sugarcane mills. Wild flies were collected with Nzi traps in areas of sugarcane plantations. Both wild and colonized flies were exposed to eleven concentrations of cypermethrin in impregnated filter paper bioassays. All the populations proved to be resistant to cypermethrin, with resistance factors among field populations ranging from 6.8 to 38.6. The intensive use of insecticides has led to the development of pyrethroid resistance in stable fly populations in the proximities of sugarcane mills in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.

Stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) outbreaks have been associated with sugarcane mills in Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the attractivity of vinasse, a liquid byproduct of ethanol production applied to postharvest sugarcane fields, to adult S. calcitrans. Stable fly abundance was monitored for 21 days in August-September 2014, at a sugarcane mill in the municipality of Nova Alvorada do Sul, state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Following mechanized harvesting of sugarcane and the consequent deposition of large amounts of plant residue (straw) in the field, the study area (13.5ha) was surrounded by 22 sticky cylinder (“alsynite”) traps. The area was fertigated with vinasse immediately after the traps were placed. Insects caught in the traps were collected daily at 7:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 15:00 p.m. A total of 83,593 specimens of S. calcitrans were caught, of which 5,516 (6.6%) were attracted within the first five hours after vinasse application. The highest number of S. calcitrans was caught in the first week following vinasse application, with a peak on the 4th day (12,818 flies), which was influenced by adverse weather conditions on the previous days. This study confirms that fertigation of sugarcane fields by spraying vinasse after the harvest attracts S. calcitrans, thus quickly increasing their abundance over the days following application. RESUMO: Surtos da mosca-dos-estábulos (Stomoxys calcitrans) têm sido associados a usinas sucroalcooleiras no Brasil. Este estudo objetivou avaliar a atratividade da aspersão de vinhaça, um subproduto líquido da produção de etanol aplicado após a colheita em áreas canavieiras, a adultos de S. calcitrans. A abundância desta mosca foi monitorada em uma usina de cana-de-açúcar por 21 dias, entre agosto e setembro de 2014, em Nova Alvorada do Sul/MS. Após a colheita mecanizada da cana e consequente deposição de grande quantidade de palha no campo, a área de estudo (13,5ha) foi cercada com 22 armadilhas adesivas cilíndricas (“alsynite”). Fertirrigação com vinhaça foi iniciada imediatamente após instalação das armadilhas. A coleta das moscas capturadas nas armadilhas foi realizada diariamente às 7:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. e 15:00 p.m. Foram capturados 83.593 espécimes de S. calcitrans, sendo 5.516 (6,6%) atraídos nas primeiras cinco horas após a aplicação da vinhaça. Maior número de S. calcitrans foi capturado na primeira semana do estudo (53.937 moscas), com pico no 4º dia (12.818 moscas), influenciado pelas condições climáticas adversas ocorridas nos dias anteriores. O presente estudo confirma que o processo de fertirrigação de áreas canavieiras com aspersão de vinhaça após a colheita é atrativo à S. calcitrans, aumentando rapidamente sua abundância nos dias subsequentes à aplicação.

The present work aimed to investigate the occurrence of Hepatozoon spp. in wild animals, domestic dogs and their respective ectoparasites, in southern Pantanal region, central-western Brazil, by molecular techniques. Between August 2013 and March 2015, 31 coatis (Nasua nasua), 78 crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous), seven ocelots (Leopardus pardalis), 42 dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), 110 wild rodents (77 Thichomys fosteri, 25 Oecomys mamorae, and 8 Clyomys laticeps), 30 marsupials (14 Thylamys macrurus, 11 Gracilinanus agilis, 4 Monodelphis domestica and 1 Didelphis albiventris), and 1582 ticks and 80 fleas collected from the sampled animals were investigated. DNA samples were submitted to PCR assays for Hepatozoon spp. targeting 18S rRNA gene. Purified amplicons were directly sequenced and submitted to phylogenetic analysis. A high prevalence of Hepatozoon among carnivores (C. thous [91.02%], dogs [45.23%], N. nasua [41.9%] and L. pardalis [71.4%]) was found. However, ticks and fleas were negative to Hepatozoon PCR assays. By phylogenetic analysis based on 18S rRNA sequences, Hepatozoon sequences amplified from crab-eating foxes, dogs, coatis and ocelots clustered with sequences of H. canis, H. americanum and H. felis. The closely related positioning of Hepatozoon sequences amplified from wild rodents and T. macrurus marsupial to Hepatozoon from reptiles and amphibians suggest a possible transmission of those Hepatozoon species between hosts by ectoparasites or by predation. Hepatozoon haplotypes found circulating in wild rodents seem to present a higher degree of polymorphism when compared to those found in other groups of animals. Although rodents seem not to participate as source of Hepatozoon infection to wild carnivores and domestic dogs, they may play an important role in the transmission of Hepatozoon to reptiles and amphibians in Pantanal biome. This is a commented list of tick’s species collected on various wild and domestic animals, including the reports on scientific literature for the studied region. Most of animals were small or medium mammals. Carnivores were the main taxa group examined. Although, the pampas deer ( Ozotocerus bezoarticus) and giant anteater ( Mymercophaga tridactyla) also has a good representation on study. Among domestic animals, dogs, horses and cattle were examined. Summing up, 18 tick species were listed for the region. Sixteen were hard ticks (Ixodidae) and two soft ticks (Argasidae). Amblyomma sculptum was the most common and abundant hard tick. Ornithodoros rostratus (Argasidae) was very abundant, being the more important Argasidae tick on the study region. Entretanto, o veado campeiro ( Ozotocerus bezoarticus) e o tamanduá bandeira ( Mymercophaga tridactyla) também tiveram um número significativamente de amostras. Dentre os animais domésticos, cães, equinos e bovinos foram examinados. No total foram listadas 18 espécies de carrapatos para a região. Dezesseis delas são carrapatos duros (Ixodidae) e duas, carrapatos moles (Argasidae). Dentre os Ixodidae, Amblyomma sculptum foi a espécie mais encontrada, sendo considerada a mais abundante na região. Ornithodoros rostratus (Argasidae) mostrou-se frequente e abundante, sendo o principal representante da família. Outbreaks of stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, cause losses for livestock producers located near sugarcane mills in Brazil, especially in southern Mato Grosso do Sul. The sugarcane mills are often pointed by local farmers as the primary source of these outbreaks; some mills also joined the farmers in combating the flies. Brazilian beef cattle production has great economic importance in similar level to bio-fuel production as ethanol. In this context, the wide-ranging knowledge on the biology and ecology of the stable fly, including larval habitats and their reproduction sites is extremely important for further development of control programs. This paper aims to report the occurrence and development of S. calcitrans larvae inside sugarcane stems in three municipalities of Mato Grosso do Sul. The sugarcane stems give protection against bad weather conditions and insecticide application. In this way, for sustainable sugarcane growth specific research concerning this situation should be conducted. Surtos de mosca dos estábulos, Stomoxys calcitrans, vêm causando prejuízos em fazendas de pecuaria localizadas próximas as usinas de cana no Brasil, especialmente no sul do Mato Grosso do Sul. As usinas são frequentemente apontadas pelos pecuarístas locais, como a principal fonte desses surtos e algumas destas usinas também se uniram aos agricultores no combate a este parasita. No Brasil, a produção de gado de corte tem grande importância econômica em nível semelhante ao de bio-combustíveis como o etanol. Neste contexto, o conhecimento amplo sobre a bioecologia, incluindo os habitats das larvas e os seus locais de reprodução, é extremamente importante para o desenvolvimento de programas de controle para a mosca dos estábulos. Este trabalho teve como objetivo registrar que larvas de S. calcitrans podem desenvolver dentro do colmo da cana. Larvas foram encontradas dentro de colmos de cana de açúcar em três oportunidades em diferentes cidades. O colmo da cana pode dar proteção para as larvas em condições climáticas desfavoráveis e aplicação de inseticidas. Desta forma, para o crescimento sustentável destas atividades, mais pesquisas específicas focadas nestas relações devem ser realizadas.

Stomoxys calcitrans (stable fly) has historically been a pest of dairy cattle and feedlots due to the availability of decaying plant matter mixed with animal excrements in such production systems. In the last few decades, S. calcitrans outbreaks have also been reported in different situations. Population explosions of S. calcitrans flies may also have natural causes, affecting not only domestic and/or wild animals but also humans.

Traps using carbon dioxide (CO(2)) as a chemical attractant are known to be effective when capturing nymphs and adults of some free-living tick species such as Amblyomma cajennense and Amblyomma parvum. Despite the fact that the main source of CO(2) is dry ice, the chemical trap which uses 20 % lactic acid (C(3)H(6)O(3)) and calcium carbonate (CaCO(3)) has been tested as an alternative source of CO(2) whenever it is difficult to obtain dry ice. The objective of this paper was to test and compare the efficiency of these two models of traps during the study of population dynamics of A. cajennense and Amblyomma dubitatum in Coronel Pacheco, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Within the period comprising May 2006 to April 2008, eight CO(2) traps, of which four were dry ice and four chemical, were put in the pasture every 14 days at preestablished areas over a 1.0-m(2) white cotton flannel cloth with a capture dispositive which constituted of double-sided adhesive tapes fixed onto the four corners of the flannels. On every collection day, a cotton flannel without any chemical attractant was placed in the same area of the pasture to become an instrument to control the traps' capture efficiency. After 1 h, the white flannels were collected and placed in plastic bags for later identification and counting of the ticks. A total of 2,133 nymphs of Amblyomma sp., 328 adults of A. cajennense, and 292 adults of A. dubitatum were collected. Out of this total, the dry ice traps captured 1,087 nymphs (51 %), 188 A. cajennense (58.2 %), and 151 A. dubitatum (53 %), while the chemical traps captured 1,016 nymphs (47.6 %), 133 A. cajennense (41 %), and 133 A. dubitatum (46.5 %); 30 nymphs (1.4 %), 7 A. cajennense (0.8 %), and 8 A. dubitatum (0.5 %) were found on the control flannel. The capture potentials of ticks, nymphs, and adults, by the two models of traps tested, were statistically similar (p0.05). These results confirm the efficiency of the chemical trap enabling its use in areas of either difficult access or too distant from a dry ice supplier as is the case of forest areas where studies about ixodological fauna are generally carried out.

We evaluated if Rickettsia rickettsii-experimentally infected dogs could serve as amplifier hosts for hipicephalus sanguineus ticks. In addition, we checked if Rh. sanguineus ticks that acquired Ri. rickettsii from dogs could transmit the bacterium to susceptible hosts (vector competence), and if these ticks could maintain the bacterium by transstadial and transovarial transmissions. Uninfected larvae, nymphs, and adults of Rh. sanguineus were allowed to feed upon three groups of dogs: groups 1 (G1) and 2 (G2) composed of Ri. rickettsii-infected dogs, infected intraperitoneally and via tick bites, respectively, and group 3 composed of uninfected dogs. After larval and nymphal feeding on rickettsemic dogs, 7.1-15.2% and 35.8-37.9% of the molted nymphs and adults, respectively, were shown by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to be infected by Ri. rickettsii, confirming that both G1 and G2 dogs were efficient sources of rickettsial infection (amplifier host), resulting in transstadial transmission of the agent. These infected nymphs and adults successfully transmitted Ri. rickettsii to guinea pigs, confirming vector competence after acquisition of the infection from rickettsemic dogs. Transovarial transmission of Ri. rickettsii was observed in engorged females that had been infected as nymphs by feeding on both G1 and G2 dogs, but not in engorged females that acquired the infection during adult feeding on these same dogs. Adult ticks of the species Amblyomma parvum were collected from the vegetation in the Pantanal biome (state of Mato Grosso do Sul) and from horses in the Cerrado biome (state of Piauí) in Brazil. The ticks were individually tested for rickettsial infection via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) targeting three rickettsial genes, gltA, ompA and ompB. Overall, 63.5% (40/63) and 66.7% (2/3) of A. parvum ticks from Pantanal and Cerrado, respectively, contained rickettsial DNA, which were all confirmed by DNA sequencing to be 100% identical to the corresponding fragments of the gltA, ompA and ompB genes of Candidatus Rickettsia andeanae. This report is the first to describe Ca. R. andeanae in Brazil.

The Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is the most important cattle tick in Brazil. In the past two decades, some traditional management practices are being replaced with the aim of intensifying cattle production. Forested areas are being replaced by exotic pasture and ranch owners are replacing Nelore for European breeds. The pampas deer (Ozoctoceros bezoarticus) is a medium-sized cervid that occurs in grasslands of South America. Between December 2005 and January 2007, we captured and collected ticks from 15 pampas deer and 172 bovines. The abundance, intensity, and prevalence of ticks found in cattle were lower than those in pampas deer (p < 0.05), indicating that pampas deer is more susceptible than cattle. The high number of engorged females collected from pampas deer, their capacity to lay eggs, and the percentage of eclosion indicates that the pampas deer population in the Pantanal wetlands is sufficient to maintain the R. (B.) microplus, thus playing a important role in the transmission of ticks and tick-borne diseases. The recent deforestation to introduce Brachiaria sp. and European cattle needs to be carefully evaluated to prevent economic losses to the cattle industry and damage to the wildlife in Pantanal.

In the last few decades, stable fly outbreaks have also been reported in pasture-raised beef cattle, usually associated with wastes accumulated from animal feeding during winter, the introduction of large-scale crop operations near cattle ranches, and/or the inadvertent use of organic fertilizers. Population explosions of Stomoxys flies may also have natural causes, affecting not only domestic and/or wild animals but also humans. This article compiles information on stable fly outbreaks in Brazil and abroad and discusses their causes and consequences. Resumo A mosca-dos-estábulos (Stomoxys calcitrans) tem sido historicamente uma praga em gado de leite e gado de corte em confinamento devido à disponibilidade de matéria orgânica vegetal em decomposição, misturada a dejetos animais, nestes sistemas de produção. Nas últimas décadas, surtos de infestação por esta mosca passaram a ocorrer também em rebanhos de corte mantidos extensivamente, geralmente associados ao acúmulo de resíduos de suplementação alimentar durante o inverno, introdução de culturas agrícolas em larga escala no entorno de propriedades pecuárias e/ou uso inadvertido de fertilizantes orgânicos. Eventualmente, explosões populacionais de Stomoxys podem ter causas naturais, afetando animais domésticos e/ou selvagens, além do próprio homem. Este artigo reúne informações sobre surtos da mosca-dos-estábulos no Brasil e em outros países e discute suas causas e consequências.

The profitability of livestock activities can be diminished significantly by the effects of parasites. Economic losses caused by cattle parasites in Brazil were estimated on an annual basis, considering the total number of animals at risk and the potential detrimental effects of parasitism on cattle productivity. Estimates in U.S. dollars (USD) were based on reported yield losses among untreated animals and reflected some of the effects of parasitic diseases. Relevant parasites that affect cattle productivity in Brazil, and their economic impact in USD billions include: gastrointestinal nematodes - $7.11; cattle tick (Rhipicephalus(Boophilus) microplus) - $3.24; horn fly (Haematobia irritans) - $2.56; cattle grub (Dermatobia hominis) - $0.38; New World screwworm fly (Cochliomyia hominivorax) - $0.34; and stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) - $0.34. The combined annual economic loss due to internal and external parasites of cattle in Brazil considered here was estimated to be at least USD 13.96 billion. These findings are discussed in the context of methodologies and research that are required in order to improve the accuracy of these economic impact assessments. This information needs to be taken into consideration when developing sustainable policies for mitigating the impact of parasitism on the profitability of Brazilian cattle producers. A rentabilidade da atividade pecuária pode ser diminuída significativamente pelos efeitos dos parasitos que afetam o gado. As perdas econômicas causadas pelos parasitos dos bovinos, no Brasil, foram estimadas em uma base anual, considerando-se o número total de animais em risco e os efeitos negativos do parasitismo sobre a produtividade do gado. Estimativas em dólares baseiam-se em perdas de rendimento conhecidas em animais não tratados, e refletem alguns dos efeitos de doenças parasitárias. Aqui, tais perdas são referidas como perdas potenciais. Parasitos relevantes que afetam o bem-estar do gado e a produtividade no Brasil e seu impacto econômico em dólares incluem: nematódeos gastrintestinais - $7,11 bilhões; carrapato bovino (Rhipicephalus(Boophilus) microplus) - $3,24 bilhões; mosca-dos-chifres (Haematobia irritans) - $2,56 bilhões; berne (Dermatobia hominis) - $0,38 bilhões; mosca-da-bicheira (Cochliomyia hominivorax) - $0,34 bilhões; e a mosca-dos-estábulos (Stomoxys calcitrans) - $0,34 bilhões. A perda econômica anual combinada, devido aos parasitos internos e externos dos bovinos aqui listados, foi estimada em pelo menos $13,96 bilhões. Tais resultados são discutidos no contexto de metodologias e pesquisas necessárias, como a que envolve os efeitos da resistência aos parasiticidas de uso veterinário, para melhorar a precisão de tais avaliações de impacto econômico. Essa informação deve ser considerada pelos tomadores de decisão para influenciar programas de investigação e regulação, a fim de desenvolver políticas sustentáveis que reduzam o impacto do parasitismo sobre a rentabilidade dos pecuaristas brasileiros.

Feral pigs (S. scrofa) were introduced to the Pantanal region around 200 years ago and the population appears to be in expansion. Its eradication is considered to be impossible. The population of feral pigs in the Pantanal wetlands is currently estimated at one million. Two scientific excursions were organized. The first was conducted during the dry season, when 21 feral pigs were captured and the second was during the wet season, when 23 feral pigs were captured. Ticks were collected and the oviposition and hatching process were studied to confirm the biological success of each tick species. Three tick species were found to be feeding on feral pigs: Amblyomma cajennense, A. parvum, and Ornithodoros rostratus. During the dry season, 178 adult A. cajennense were collected, contrasting with 127 A. cajennense specimens in the wet season. This suggests that the seasonality of these ticks in the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands could be different from other regions. The results indicate that A. parvum and A. cajennense are biologically successful parasites in relation to feral pigs. A. cajennense appears to have adapted to this tick-host relationship, as well as the areas where feral pigs are abundant, and could play a role in the amplification of this tick population.

This study evaluates the impact of cattle-raising on ticks associated with wildlife in the Pantanal region of Brazil, by trapping free-living ticks using a CO(2) tick trap. The traps were equally distributed in two areas: a 600-ha protected area (PA) and the Nhumirim Ranch (NR). Both areas are contiguous and located at the sub-region of Nhecolândia (18 degrees 59'S; 56 degrees 39'W), Pantanal, Brazil. In each area, four habitat types were selected: cerrado (tropical savanna), forest patches, lakes and soda lakes. The last two are temporary lagoons of fresh and salted water, respectively. A total of 980 nymphs, 613 adults and 13 larvae of ticks Amblyomma were collected in 256 h of collection. In a pen of calves infested by Ornithodoros rostratus 114 specimens were collected, including larvae, nymphs and adults. Adults of A. cajennense and A. parvum were more abundant in the savanna at NR, but not differed among habitat types at PA. There was a tendency of having more nymphs in NR than in PA. The higher number of ticks found in the NR in comparison to the PA is not due to the presence of cattle itself but probably due to introduced dogs and horses, habitat alteration.

Little is known about the effect of temperature on viability of free-living phases of the life cycle of Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806) despite of its importance as vector of several pathogens. Knowledge of the effect of abiotic factors on the capacity of a given tick species to infest new hosts is important for routine experimental activities under laboratory conditions, and may be relevant to understand the transmission of pathogens. The study evaluates the viability of R. sanguineus females held at 18 +/- 1, 27 +/- 1 and 32 +/- 1 degrees C and 80 +/- 5% RH (saturation deficits of 3.0, 5.3 and 7.2 mmHg, respectively) for three fasting periods (3 and 20 days and the day when female mortality reached approximately 50% after ecdysis), under laboratory conditions. In general, the best result on viability was obtained when rabbits were infested with unfed female ticks after three or 20 fasting days at both 27 +/- 1 and 32 +/- 1 degrees C and 80 +/- 5% RH.

Objetivou-se com o experimento verificar a influência de diferentes agregações sobre os parâmetros relacionados ao processo de ecdise ninfal e de adulto de Rhipicephalus sanguineus (Latreille, 1806). Foram utilizados como hospedeiros 10 coelhos domésticos (Oryctolagus cuniculus) primos-infestados. Foram analisados os períodos de pré-ecdise, de ecdise e de muda, o percentual e o ritmo de ecdise para todos os estágios estudados. Durante toda a fase não-parasitária, os carrapatos foram mantidos em condições controladas de umidade (80±5%) e temperatura (27±1ºC). Um total de 1560 larvas ingurgitadas e de 1560 ninfas ingurgitadas foi utilizado. Os carrapatos foram divididos em seis grupos contendo um, cinco, dez, 20, 40 e 80 espécimes cada. Para cada um desses grupos foram realizadas dez repetições. Os processos de ecdise ninfal e de adulto foram acompanhados diariamente. The family Macrochelidae Vitzthum is one of the most abundant and diverse groups of predatory mites living in excrements or decomposing animals. Some species of this family have shown good potential as biological control agents. Stomoxys calcitrans L. is a serious problem that has been faced by cattle raisers in some Brazilian states, causing significant losses. Musca domestica L. may vector several pathogens that affect humans and animals. The aims of the study reported in this document were the preparation of a taxonomic catalog of the world macrochelid species, to determine the macrochelid species in microhabitats where the stable fly is usually found in commercial cow raising farms in São Paulo State, and to evaluate of the effect of different macrochelid species as control agents of harmful muscid flies. A total of 520 species of 23 genera are reported in the catalog. In total, 1359 specimens were collected from cow manure and litter in different regions of São Paulo State. These represented ten species of three genera and one new species, which was described. In laboratory tests, Macrocheles n. sp. presented higher predation and oviposition rates on larvae of S. calcitrans (23.8 larvae consumed and laid about 4 eggs per day, respectively). For Macrocheles n. sp., total immature development (egg-adult) was completed in 1.3 ± 0.01, 1.3 ± 0.01 and 1.5 ± 0.03 days on eggs of S. calcitrans and M. domestica and on Protorhabditis sp., respectively. Fecundity was higher on Protorhabditis sp. (77.2 ± 5.1 eggs/female) than on S. calcitrans (58.0 ± 5.9) and M. domestica (55.0 ± 5.3). Results of this study suggest that Macrocheles n. sp. is a promising biological control agent of S. calcitrans and M. domestica, and that it could be mass reared with the use of Protorhabditis sp. or eggs of M. domestica. Algumas espécies dessa família tem mostrado potencial como agentes de controle biológico. Stomoxys calcitrans L. tem sido um problema sério enfrentado por pecuaristas em alguns estados brasileiros e tem causado perdas significativas no setor pecuarista. Já Musca domestica L. pode ser vetora de várias patógenos de seres humanos e de animais. Os objetivos do estudo relatado neste documento foram a elaboração de um catálogo taxonômico de espécies de Macrochelidae do mundo, determinar as espécies de macroquelídeos encontradas em microhabitats em que a mosca-dos-estábulos é geralmente encontrada nas fazendas do Estado de São Paulo, e avaliar o efeito de diferentes espécies de macroquelídeos como possíveis agentes de controle de moscas nocivas. A fecundidade foi maior quando alimentado com Protorhabditis sp. (77,2 ± 5,1 ovos / fêmea) do que com S. calcitrans (58,0 ± 5,9) e M. domestica (55,0 ± 5,3). Os resultados deste estudo sugerem que Macrocheles n. sp. é um promissor agente de controle biológico de S. calcitrans e M. domestica e que poderia ser criado de forma massal com o uso de Protorhabditis sp. ou ovos de M. domestica.
