Abstract

Tree growth and longevity trade-offs fundamentally shape the terrestrial carbon balance. Yet, we lack a unified understanding of how such trade-offs vary across the world's forests. By mapping life history traits for a wide range of species across the Americas, we reveal considerable variation in life expectancies from 10 centimeters in diameter (ranging from 1.3 to 3195 years) and show that the pace of life for trees can be accurately classified into four demographic functional types. We found emergent patterns in the strength of trade-offs between growth and longevity across a temperature gradient. Furthermore, we show that the diversity of life history traits varies predictably across forest biomes, giving rise to a positive relationship between trait diversity and productivity. Our pan-latitudinal assessment provides new insights into the demographic mechanisms that govern the carbon turnover rate across forest biomes.

2. Acoustic waves in a halfspace material filled with random particulate

Abstract

Particulate materials include powders, emulsions, composites, and many others. This is why measuring these has become important for both industry and scientific applications. For industrial applications, the greatest need is to measure dense particulates, in-situ, and non-destructively. In theory, this could be achieved with acoustics: the standard method is to send an acoustic wave through the particulate and then attempt to measure the effective wave speed and attenuation. A major obstacle here is that it is not clear how to relate the effective wave speed and attenuation to the reflection and transmission coefficients, which are far easier to measure. This is because it has been very difficult to mathematically account for different background mediums. In this paper we resolve this obstacle. We present how to account for different background mediums for a simple case, to help comprehension: a halfspace filled with a random particulate, where the background of the halfspace is different to the exterior medium. The key to solving this problem was to derive a systematic extension of a widely used closure approximation: the quasi-crystalline approximation (QCA). We present some numerical results to demonstrate that the reflection coefficient can be easily calculated for a broad range of frequencies and particle properties.

Abstract

The strong coupling of plasmonic resonance modes in conductive pyramidal nanoparticles leads to an increase in the density of free charges on the surface. By ensuring plasmonic coupling in the pyramidal nanoparticle lattice, the achieved field intensity is potentiated. At the same time, a strong coupling between resonant modes is guaranteed, which results in the formation of new hybrid modes. In this manuscript, we demonstrated a tunable double anticrossing interaction that results from the interaction between two Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) modes and a Surface Plasmon Polariton (SPP) wave. The tuning is done as a function of the variation of the angle of incidence of the input electric field. From the double anticrossing, an increase in field intensity in a blue-shifted LSPR mode located in the red wavelength region is observed. This demonstrates that at certain angles of incidence, the intensity field obtained is strongly favored, which would be beneficial for applications such as Surface Enhancement Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). Nanoparticle-based lattices have been widely used for biosensor applications. However, one of the major limitations of this type of device is the low tolerance to high concentrations of biomolecules, which significantly affects their performance. According to the studies carried out for this manuscript, it was demonstrated that the implemented geometry allows for the observation of an LSPR mode, which is responsible for the control and synchronization of other perceived resonances. This mode remains almost invariant when subjected to structural variations or changes in the angle of incidence of the electric field. These characteristics eliminate the limitation mentioned above, allowing for sensitivities 10^3 times higher than those achieved in conventional systems based on LSPR used to detect P. brasiliensis antigen., Comment: 21 pages, 3 figures

4. Re-assessing special aspects of Dirac fermions in presence of Lorentz-symmetry violation

Abstract

This paper focuses on additional inspections concerning the fermionic sector of the Standard Model Extension (SME). In this context, our main effort in this contribution is to investigate effects of Lorentz-symmetry violation (LSV) on the Klein Paradox, the Zitterbewegung and its phenomenology in connection to Condensed Matter Physics, Atomic Physics, and Astrophysics. Finally, we discuss a particular realization of LSV in the Dirac equation, considering an asymmetry between space and time due to a scale factor present in the linear momentum of the fermion, but which does not touch its time derivative. We go further and extend the implications of this asymmetry in the situation the scale factor becomes space-time dependent to compute its influence on the kinematics of the Compton effect with the extended dispersion relation for the fermion that scatters the photon., Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures

7. Loop Quantum Gravity effects on electromagnetic properties of charged leptons

Abstract

The efforts in this contribution consist in reassessing a modified Dirac equation that incorporates a $\gamma^0 \gamma_5$-Lorentz-symmetry violating (LSV) term induced as a Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG) effect. Originally, this equation has been applied and considered as a good scenario for describing a number of investigations on the flight time of cosmic neutrinos, which suggests that the speed, in vacuum, in connection with the geometry that describes a granular space-time, takes the energy-dependent form, e.g., $v(E) =1 \pm E/E_{\textrm{LSV}}$, with $E_{\textrm{LSV}} \approx 6,5 \times 10^{17}$ GeV for neutrinos. Once LQG provides a viable way to understand this picture consistently, we pursue an analysis of this effective Dirac equation to inspect some of its properties. These include: the derivation of the modified fermionic propagator, attainment of the Gordon decomposition of the vector current with minimal electromagnetic coupling to obtain information on the form factors, examination of the non-relativistic limit of the equation, evaluation of the spin- and velocity-dependent corrections to the Coulomb potential due to LQG effects, and the modified Hamiltonian in the low-relativistic regime. The study of the form factors may open up paths to set up bounds on the LQG parameters from the precision measurements of electromagnetic attributes of the charged leptons, such as their respective electric and magnetic dipole moments., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

The Sleeping Beauty problem is a probability riddle with no definite solution for more than two decades and its solution is of great interest in many fields of knowledge. There are two main competing solutions to the problem: the halfer approach, and the thirder approach. The main reason for disagreement in the literature is connected to the use of different probability spaces to represent the same probabilistic riddle. In this work, we analyse the problem from a mathematical perspective, identifying probability distributions induced directly from the thought experiment's rules. The precise choices of probability spaces provide both halfer and thirder solutions to the problem. Abstract

Waveform generation is essential for studying signal propagation and channel characteristics, particularly for objects that are conceptualized but still need to be operational. We introduce a comprehensive guide on creating synthetic signals using channel and delay coefficients derived from the Quasi-Deterministic Radio Channel Generator (QuaDRiGa), which is recognized as a 3GPP-3D and 3GPP 38.901 reference implementation. The effectiveness of the proposed synthetic waveform generation method is validated through accurate estimation of code delay and Doppler shift. This validation is achieved using both the parallel code phase search technique and the conventional tracking method applied to satellites. As the method of integrating channel and delay coefficients to create synthetic waveforms is the same for satellite, HAPS, and gNB PRS, validating this method on synthetic satellite signals could potentially be extended to HAPS and gNB PRS as well. 14. SUSY QED with Lorentz-asymmetric fermionic matter and a glance at the electron's EDM

Abstract

This contribution sets out to pursue the investigation of a supersymmetric electrodynamics model with Lorentz-symmetry violation (LSV) manifested by a space-time unbalance in the propagation of the fermionic charged matter. Despite violation of Lorentz symmetry, the supersymmetry algebra is kept untouched. A superspace approach is then adopted to build up an $\mathcal{N}=1$-supersymmetric Abelian gauge theory in presence of a Lorentz-violating background supermultiplet that accommodates the space-time asymmetry parameter of the charged matter. It is described, in this scenario, how the particular Lorentz-symmetry breaking, brought about by the fermionic matter, affects its (matter) scalar partners and the photon/photino that minimally couple to charged matter. From the (modified) Dirac, Klein-Gordon and Maxwell field equations, the corresponding dispersion relations are worked out to inspect and discuss the physical effects of the LSV Majorana fermion condensates that naturally emerge from the background supermultiplet. Finally, efforts are targeted to investigate the Gordon decomposition of the charged lepton electromagnetic current. This is carried out by iterating the (fermion and scalar) matter field equations, which points to an effective contribution to the electron's electric dipole moment. This result allows us to attain an estimate of the pseudo-vector condensate of the (LSV) Majorana background fermion., Comment: 33 pages, 1 figure. 21. Elaboration and characterization of Pitaya (hylocereus polyrhizus) witbier craft beer

Abstract

Beer is the most consumed alcoholic beverage in the world, containing numerous bioactive compounds. The market has innovated to provide better experiences for consumers, such as the development of craft beers with high levels of antioxidant compounds obtained by incorporating fruits. This study aimed to produce a craft beer of the Witbier type added with pitaya (Hylocereus polyrhizus) pulp in different concentrations, evaluating the effects of this addition on the physical-chemical characteristics, the content of phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity of the drinks. The beers were analyzed for soluble solids, pH, total acidity, dry matter, mineral matter, foam, color, total phenolic compounds, flavonoid content and antioxidant activity using the FRAP, ABTS and DPPH methods. The soluble solids content decreased from 12°Bx to approximately 7.2°Bx, with higher pitaya concentrations (T2 and T3) showing slightly lower final values compared to control beers. The apparent attenuation and alcohol content were significantly higher in beers with 10% and 20% (v/v) pitaya pulp, reflecting more complete fermentation. Beers with higher pitaya concentrations also exhibited notable changes in color parameters, showing increased redness. Total phenolic content did not show statistical variation between treatments and the control, with values between 410 (T2) and 547 (T3) mg AGE L−1. Antioxidant activity, assessed via FRAP (79.7 mg AGE L−1 (T3)), DPPH (475 mg AGE L−1 (T3)), and ABTS (455 mg α-tocopherol L−1 (T3)) methods, and total flavonoids content (12.6 mg QE L−1 (T3)) increased with higher pitaya levels. Overall, pitaya pulp impacted several beer attributes, particularly affecting fermentation, color, and antioxidant properties.

Abstract

Abstract Climate change is currently one of humanity’s greatest threats. To help scholars understand the psychology of climate change, we conducted an online quasi-experimental survey on 59,508 participants from 63 countries (collected between July 2022 and July 2023). In a between-subjects design, we tested 11 interventions designed to promote climate change mitigation across four outcomes: climate change belief, support for climate policies, willingness to share information on social media, and performance on an effortful pro-environmental behavioural task. Participants also reported their demographic information (e.g., age, gender) and several other independent variables (e.g., political orientation, perceptions about the scientific consensus). In the no-intervention control group, we also measured important additional variables, such as environmentalist identity and trust in climate science. We report the collaboration procedure, study design, raw and cleaned data, all survey materials, relevant analysis scripts, and data visualisations. This dataset can be used to further the understanding of psychological, demographic, and national-level factors related to individual-level climate action and how these differ across countries.

Abstract

Understanding the relaxation and recombination processes of excited states in two-dimensional (2D)/three-dimensional (3D) semiconductor heterojunctions is essential for developing efficient optical and (opto)electronic devices which integrate new 2D materials with more conventional 3D ones. In this work, we unveil the carrier dynamics and charge transfer in a monolayer of WSe$_2$ on a GaAs substrate. We use time-resolved differential reflectivity to study the charge relaxation processes involved in the junction and how they change when compared to an electrically decoupled heterostructure, WSe$_2$/hBN/GaAs. We observe that the monolayer in direct contact with the GaAs substrate presents longer optically-excited carrier lifetimes (3.5 ns) when compared with the hBN-isolated region (1 ns), consistent with a strong reduction of radiative decay and a fast charge transfer of a single polarity. Through low-temperature measurements, we find evidence of a type-II band alignment for this heterostructure with an exciton dissociation that accumulates electrons in the GaAs and holes in the WSe$_2$. The type-II band alignment and fast photo-excited carrier dissociation shown here indicate that WSe$_2$/GaAs is a promising junction for new photovoltaic and other optoelectronic devices, making use of the best properties of new (2D) and conventional (3D) semiconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 4 Figures

Abstract

Microwave remote sensing is significantly altered when passing through clouds or dense ice. This phenomenon isn't unique to microwaves; for instance, ultrasound is also disrupted when traversing through heterogeneous tissues. Understanding the average transmission in particle-filled environments is central to improve data extraction or even to create materials that can selectively block or absorb certain wave frequencies. Most methods that calculate the average transmitted field assume that it satisfies a wave equation with a complex effective wavenumber. However, recent theoretical work has predicted more than one effective wave propagating even in a material which is statistical isotropic and for scalar waves. In this work we provide the first clear evidence of these predicted multiple effective waves by using high fidelity Monte-Carlo simulations that do not make any statistical assumptions. To achieve this, we also had to fill in a missing link in the theory for particulate materials: we prove that the incident wave does not propagate within the material, which is usually taken as an assumption called the Ewald-Oseen extinction theorem. By proving this we conclude that the extinction length - the distance it takes for the incident wave to be extinct - is equal to the correlation length between the particles.

28. Predicting nuclear masses with product-unit networks

Abstract

Accurate estimation of nuclear masses and their prediction beyond the experimentally explored domains of the nuclear landscape are crucial to an understanding of the fundamental origin of nuclear properties and to many applications of nuclear science, most notably in quantifying the $r$-process of stellar nucleosynthesis. Neural networks have been applied with some success to the prediction of nuclear masses, but they are known to have shortcomings in application to extrapolation tasks. In this work, we propose and explore a novel type of neural network for mass prediction in which the usual neuron-like processing units are replaced by complex-valued product units that permit multiplicative couplings of inputs to be learned from the input data. This generalized network model is tested on both interpolation and extrapolation data sets drawn from the Atomic Mass Evaluation. Its performance is compared with that of several neural-network architectures, substantiating its suitability for nuclear mass prediction. Additionally, a prediction-uncertainty measure for such complex-valued networks is proposed that serves to identify regions of expected low prediction error.

Abstract

Abstract Multiplexed imaging technologies have made it possible to interrogate complex tissue microenvironments at sub-cellular resolution within their native spatial context. However, proper quantification of this complexity requires the ability to easily and accurately segment cells into their sub-cellular compartments. Within the supervised learning paradigm, deep learning-based segmentation methods demonstrating human level performance have emerged. However, limited work has been done in developing such generalist methods within the unsupervised context. Here we present an easy-to-use unsupervised segmentation (UNSEG) method that achieves deep learning level performance without requiring any training data via leveraging a Bayesian-like framework, and nucleus and cell membrane markers. We show that UNSEG is internally consistent and better at generalizing to the complexity of tissue morphology than current deep learning methods, allowing it to unambiguously identify the cytoplasmic compartment of a cell, and localize molecules to their correct sub-cellular compartment. We also introduce a perturbed watershed algorithm for stably and automatically segmenting a cluster of cell nuclei into individual nuclei that increases the accuracy of classical watershed. Finally, we demonstrate the efficacy of UNSEG on a high-quality annotated gastrointestinal tissue dataset we have generated, on publicly available datasets, and in a range of practical scenarios.

Abstract

Background: Chronic pain is highly burdening and multifactorial in etiology. The endogenous-pain-healing system restores body tissue to a non-painful state after an injury leading to pain, and its disruption could represent a relevant mechanism, especially for nursing interventions. Aim: To review the literature and summarize the results that support this hypothesis. Methods: We hypothesized that the mechanism behind this system mainly depends on the endogenous pain modulatory system (EPMS), which is responsible for inhibiting pain after tissue healing is complete and facilitating it when tissue damage is still present. Different biomarkers can quantify EPMS functioning. We reviewed the literature and included relevant information regarding this hypothesis. Results: First, conditioned pain modulation (CPM) measures pain inhibition and is a possible predictor for pain chronification. Second, motor cortex excitability measures the cortical control of the EPMS, which can be assessed through transcranial magnetic stimulation (using intracortical inhibition) or electroencephalography. Modifiable factors disrupt its functioning, such as sleep deprivation, medication overuse, and mental health status, but could be protective, such as exercise, certain medications, mind–body techniques, and non-invasive neuromodulation therapies. The acquisition of neurophysiological knowledge of how the chronicity of pain occurs and the EPMS involvement in this process may allow for better management of these patients. Conclusions: We raised the hypothesis that the impairment of the EPMS (altered cortical excitability and descendent pain modulation pathways) seems to be related to the disruption of the pain healing process and its chronicity. Further longitudinal studies evaluating the relationship between these biomarkers and chronic pain development are necessary.

Abstract

Abstract: The tropical forest carbon sink is known to be drought sensitive, but it is unclear which forests are the most vulnerable to extreme events. Forests with hotter and drier baseline conditions may be protected by prior adaptation, or more vulnerable because they operate closer to physiological limits. Here we report that forests in drier South American climates experienced the greatest impacts of the 2015–2016 El Niño, indicating greater vulnerability to extreme temperatures and drought. The long-term, ground-measured tree-by-tree responses of 123 forest plots across tropical South America show that the biomass carbon sink ceased during the event with carbon balance becoming indistinguishable from zero (−0.02 ± 0.37 Mg C ha−1 per year). However, intact tropical South American forests overall were no more sensitive to the extreme 2015–2016 El Niño than to previous less intense events, remaining a key defence against climate change as long as they are protected.

Abstract

Semiconductor transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have equivalent dynamics for their two spin/valley species. This arises from their energy-degenerated spin states, connected via time-reversal symmetry. When an out-of-plane magnetic field is applied, time-reversal symmetry is broken and the energies of the spin-polarized bands shift, resulting in different bandgaps and dynamics in the K$_+$ and K$_-$ valleys. Here, we use time-resolved Kerr rotation to study the magnetic field dependence of the spin dynamics in monolayer MoSe$_2$. We show that the magnetic field can control the light-induced spin accumulation of the two valley states, with a small effect on the recombination lifetimes. We unveil that the magnetic field-dependent spin accumulation is in agreement with hole spin dynamics at the longer timescales, indicating that the electron spins have faster relaxation rates. We propose a rate equation model that suggests that lifting the energy-degeneracy of the valleys induces an ultrafast spin-flip toward the stabilization of the valley with the higher valence band energy. Our results provide an experimental insight into the ultrafast charge and spin dynamics in TMDs and a way to control it, which will be useful for the development of new spintronic and valleytronic applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

34. Adversarial training with informed data selection

Abstract

With the increasing amount of available data and advances in computing capabilities, deep neural networks (DNNs) have been successfully employed to solve challenging tasks in various areas, including healthcare, climate, and finance. Nevertheless, state-of-the-art DNNs are susceptible to quasi-imperceptible perturbed versions of the original images -- adversarial examples. These perturbations of the network input can lead to disastrous implications in critical areas where wrong decisions can directly affect human lives. Adversarial training is the most efficient solution to defend the network against these malicious attacks. However, adversarial trained networks generally come with lower clean accuracy and higher computational complexity. This work proposes a data selection (DS) strategy to be applied in the mini-batch training. Based on the cross-entropy loss, the most relevant samples in the batch are selected to update the model parameters in the backpropagation. The simulation results show that a good compromise can be obtained regarding robustness and standard accuracy, whereas the computational complexity of the backpropagation pass is reduced.

Abstract

Background: Sickle cell disease (SCD) comprises a heterogeneous group of inherited hemolytic disorders that increases the risk of maternal and perinatal complications due to chronic systemic inflammatory response, endothelial damage and vaso-occlusion. The contribution of genotypes to the severity of outcomes during pregnancy is not completely established. Methods: A retrospective study of medical charts was performed to compare maternal and perinatal outcomes in Hb SS, Hb SC disease and sickle-beta thalassemia (Hb Sβ) pregnancies followed at a high-risk antenatal care unit over a 6-year period. A descriptive analysis of morphological findings was performed of the placenta when pathology reports were available. Results: Sixty-two SCD pregnant women [25 Hb SS (40 %), 29 Hb SC (47 %) and 8 Hb Sβ (13 %)] were included. Overall, SCD was associated with maternal complications (77 %), preterm birth (30 %), cesarean section (80 %) and a need of blood transfusion. In general there were no statistically significant differences between genotypes. The only significant difference was the hemoglobin level at first antenatal care visit which was lower for the homozygous genotype (7.7 g/dL) compared to Hb SC and Hb Sβ (9.7 g/dL and 8.4 g/dL, respectively; p-value = 0.01). Ten of 15 evaluated placentas showed abnormal morphological findings Conclusion: SCD, regardless of the underlying genotype, is associated with increased adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes and placental abnormalities associated with maternal vascular malperfusion.

This study investigates whether the disparity in receiving curative‐intent treatment (curative‐intent surgery and/or stereotactic body radiation therapy [SBRT]) for early‐stage non‐small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) between non‐Hispanic Whites (NHWs) and total Blacks extends to diverse Black populations, including US‐born, Afro‐Haitian, West Indian Black, and Hispanic Black individuals. Methods This cross‐sectional study included all Florida cancer registry early‐stage NSCLC cases 2005–2017, linked to individual‐level discharge data containing comorbidity and specific treatment details (surgery and/or SBRT). Multivariable logistic regression assessed the association between race/ethnicity and the receipt of curative‐intent treatment, while accounting for sociodemographic factors (poverty, age, insurance, and smoking status) and clinical variables. Results Among 55,655 early‐stage NSCLC patients, 71.1% received curative‐intent treatment: 72.1% NHW and 59.7% Black (non‐Hispanic and Hispanic) individuals. Black patients had 35% lower odds (ORadj, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.59–0.70) of receiving curative‐intent treatment compared to NHW patients. ORs varied from 0.57 (95% CI, 0.59–0.70) for Hispanic Black to 0.76 (95% CI, 0.56–1.02) for West Indian Black. Remarkably, Black‐White disparities persisted despite the availability of curative treatment options (SBRT) for both high Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) observed among US‐born Blacks and surgery for low CCI patients among all other Black subgroups. Conclusions Pronounced disparities in accessing curative‐intent treatments for early‐stage NSCLC were evident across all Black subgroups, regardless of treatment availability and comorbidity profile. These findings underscore the need to address Black heterogeneity and prompt further research to rectify treatment disparities in early‐stage NSCLC.

Abstract

Abstract The growing prevalence of Internet of Things (IoT) devices hinges on resolving the challenge of powering sensors and transmitters. Addressing this, supply‐less IoT devices are gaining traction by integrating energy harvesters. This study introduces a temperature sensor devoid of external power sources, achieved through a novel luminescent solar concentrator (LSC) device based on a stretchable, adhesive elastomer. Leveraging a lanthanide‐doped styrene‐ethylene‐butylene‐styrene matrix, the LSC yielded 0.09% device efficiency. The resultant temperature sensor exhibits a thermal sensitivity of 2.1%°C−1 and a 0.06 °C temperature uncertainty, autonomously transmitting real‐time data to a server for user visualization via smartphones. Additionally, the integration of LED‐based lighting enables functionality in low‐light conditions, ensuring 24 h cycle operation and the possibility of having four distinct thermometric parameters without changing the device configuration, stating remarkable robustness and reliability of the system.

Abstract

Abstract Triatominae are recognized as vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, a protozoan which is the etiological agent of Chagas disease. A specimen of Triatoma delpontei was found at Porto Murtinho in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. This is the first report of the occurrence of T. delpontei to the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. With the present finding, the total number of triatomines recorded in Mato do Grosso do Sul reaches 17 species, while T. delpontei, previously recorded only from Rio Grande do Sul, is now recorded to a second Brazilian state. Based on the information available in the literature, a meticulous and organized compilation has been crafted, highlighting the cytogenetics differentiations of the species occurring in this state. This work emphasizes the importance of continuous research and surveillance on Triatominae, recognized as vectors of T. cruzi.
