Comunicação The Mediterranean area currently suffers a general decline of oak woodlands’ health and productivity. Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) and holm oak (Quercus ilex L.) are widely exploited in Portugal and are an important economical and ecological resource for the country. The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) is a common remote sensing index used as a proxy for vegetation biomass, chlorophyll activity, health and stress. NDVI can be monitored for 34 years (1984-2017) at 30-meter of resolution using Landsat imagery. The online platform Google Earth Engine (GEE) allows the free access and fast handling of this huge amount of satellite images. Objective: Providing to researchers, land owners and policy-makers a high-resolution map of cork and holm oak long-term trends for the whole Portugal N/A

The AGFORWARD research project (January 2014 - December 2017), funded by the European Commission, is promoting agroforestry practices in Europe that will advance sustainable rural development. The project has four objectives: 1. to understand the context and extent of agroforestry in Europe, 2. to identify, develop and field-test innovations (through participatory research) to improve the benefits and viability of agroforestry systems in Europe, 3. to evaluate innovative agroforestry designs and practices at a field-, farm- and landscape scale, 4. to promote the wider adoption of appropriate agroforestry systems in Europe through policy development and dissemination. This report contributes to the second objective and Deliverable 2.5 which describes the lessons learnt from innovations within agroforestry systems of high natural and cultural value. Within the project, there were ten stakeholder groups focused on such systems (e.g. dehesas, montados, other wood pastures, and bocage). This report focuses on a trial established to understand the effect of understory management alternatives on the tree and cork growth, in pure cork oak woodlands, also commonly known in Portugal as ”Montado” N/A

Leaflet do projeto AGFORWARD - As primeiras impressões são, frequentemente, que a presença de árvores em sistemas pastoris irá reduzir a produção de pasto devido à competição pela água e luz. No entanto, outros efeitos na dinâmica do sistema e na disponibilidade da água podem ser benéficos para o ciclo de nutrientes e para o rendimento e a produtividade da pastagem. A presença de árvores afeta a velocidade do vento e a temperatura, criando um microclima mais ameno devido ao ensombramento. Este microclima pode melhorar a produção de pasto e a sua disponibilidade.

Segundo a Federação Europeia para as Agroflorestas os sistemas agroflorestais são uma forma de uso do solo que integra deliberadamente, no espaço e no tempo, vegetação arbórea e/ou arbustiva com culturas agrícolas e/ou atividades pastoris, potenciando os benefícios das interações ambientais e económicas daí resultantes.

This report comprises Deliverable 6.16 in the project, which contributes to the third objective as it presents field-scale evaluation of innovations, in order to adapt and evaluate agroforestry designs and practices for locations where agroforestry is currently not-widely practised or declining. The modelling of outputs at field scale to support best agroforestry practices is an ongoing activity during the AGFORWARD project. This report highlights some of the outputs which has been produced in the form of three papers (either submitted or about to be submitted to a peer-reviewed journal) or in four presentations at the Third European Agroforestry Conference in May 2016 N/A

The Yield-SAFE model is a parameter-sparse, process-based dynamic model for predicting resource capture, growth, and production in agroforestry systems that has been frequently used by various research organisations in recent years. Within the AGFORWARD project, the model has been enhanced to more accurately predict the delivery of ecosystem services provided by agroforestry systems relative to forestry and arable systems. This report also summar izes the new developments made in the model which were partially implemented during AGFORWARD modelling workshops held in 1) Monchique in Portugal in May 2015, 2) Kriopigi in Greece in June 2015, 3) Lisbon in Portugal in November 2015 and 4) Lisbon in Febru ary 2016 .
