The effects of climate and topography on soil physico-chemical and microbial parameters were studied along an extensive latitudinal climate gradient in the Coastal Cordillera of Chile (26 degrees-38 degrees S). The study sites encompass arid (Pan de Azucar), semiarid (Santa Gracia), mediterranean (La Campana) and humid (Nahuelbuta) climates and vegetation, ranging from arid desert, dominated by biological soil crusts (biocrusts), semiarid shrubland and mediterranean sclerophyllous forest, where biocrusts are present but do have a seasonal pattern to temperate-mixed forest, where biocrusts only occur as an early pioneering development stage after disturbance. All soils originate from granitic parent materials and show very strong differences in pedogenesis intensity and soil depth. Most of the investigated physical, chemical and microbiological soil properties showed distinct trends along the climate gradient. Further, abrupt changes between the arid northernmost study site and the other semi-arid to humid sites can be shown, which indicate non-linearity and thresholds along the climate gradient. Clay and total organic carbon contents (TOC) as well as Ah horizons and solum depths increased from arid to humid climates, whereas bulk density (BD), pH values and base saturation (BS) decreased. These properties demonstrate the accumulation of organic matter, clay formation and element leaching as key-pedogenic processes with increasing humidity. However, the soils in the northern arid climate do not follow this overall latitudinal trend, because texture and BD are largely controlled by aeolian input of dust and sea salts spray followed by the formation of secondary evaporate minerals. Total soil DNA concentrations and TOC increased from arid to humid sites, while areal coverage by biocrusts exhibited an opposite trend. Relative bacterial and archaeal abundances were lower in the arid site, but for the other sites the local variability exceeds the variability along the climate gradient. Differences in soil properties between topographic positions were most pronounced at the study sites with the mediterranean and humid climate, whereas microbial abundances were independent on topography across all study sites. In general, the regional climate is the strongest controlling factor for pedogenesis and microbial parameters in soils developed from the same parent material. Topographic position along individual slopes of limited length augmented this effect only under humid conditions, where water erosion likely relocated particles and elements downward. The change from alkaline to neutral soil pH between the arid and the semi-arid site coincided with qualitative differences in soil formation as well as microbial habitats. This also reflects non-linear relationships of pedogenic and microbial processes in soils depending on climate with a sharp threshold between arid and semi-arid conditions. Therefore, the soils on the transition between arid and semi-arid conditions are especially sensitive and may be well used as indicators of long and medium-term climate changes. Concluding, the unique latitudinal precipitation gradient in the Coastal Cordillera of Chile is predestined to investigate the effects of the main soil forming factor - climate - on pedogenic processes.

Streamside native forests filter nutrients and sediments from extra-riparian environments. Most related studies have been carried out in environments chronically polluted by nutrients, making it difficult to assess whether the detected patterns would hold in less polluted areas, such as Chile. However, there are no studies about Chilean natural streamside vegetation ability to filter nutrients and sediment. We hypothesized that southern Chilean streamside forests efficiently retain nutrients due to their, previously documented, tight nitrogen cycle especially in terms of fixation, mineralization and plant uptake, in addition to the high phosphorus adsorption by volcanic soils and high cation retention due to the expected higher cationic exchange capacity (CEC) in floodplains. We studied a fluvial terrace with grasslands covering the uplands, a forest on a slope, and a floodplain with native trees adjacent to a creek. We laid out nine parallel transects in the aforementioned environments and installed five wells in each transect. We extracted and analyzed groundwater three times a year, finding that the nitrate concentration decreased in the transect from the grassland to the floodplain forest. Ammonium, calcium, potassium, and electrical conductivity increased in the same transect, but these variables were always higher than those in the stream. Moreover, soil chemical determinations showed that ammonium, basic cations, aluminum, aluminum saturation and organic matter increased significantly in the floodplain soil compared to the grassland soil. The CEC was marginally different in the studied transects. We conclude that native forest ecosystems constitute effective filters for the studied nutrients, highlighting the associated soils role., Los bosques nativos adyacentes a arroyos filtran nutrientes y sedimentos que vienen desde ambientes extrarribereños. La mayoría de los estudios relacionados han sido realizados en ambientes contaminados crónicamente con nutrientes, dificultando evaluar si los patrones detectados se mantendrían en áreas menos contaminadas, como Chile. Sin embargo, no hay estudios acerca de la habilidad de la vegetación natural chilena adyacente a arroyos para filtrar nutrientes y sedimentos. Se hipotetiza que los bosques ribereños chilenos retienen eficientemente los nutrientes debido al ciclo de nitrógeno ajustado, documentado previamente, especialmente en fijación, mineralización y absorción vegetal; a la alta adsorción de fósforo por los suelos volcánicos, y a la alta retención de cationes debida a la esperada superior capacidad de intercambio catiónico (CIC) en las planicies de inundación. Se estudió una terraza fluvial con praderas cubriendo las zonas altas, bosque en la pendiente y una planicie de inundación con árboles nativos adyacentes a un arroyo. En nueve transectos paralelos en los ambientes mencionados, fueron perforados cinco pozos en cada uno. Se extrajo y analizó el agua subterránea tres veces en un año, encontrando que su concentración de nitrato decreció en el transecto desde pradera a bosque ribereño. El amonio, calcio, potasio y la conductividad eléctrica aumentaron en el mismo transecto, pero estas variables fueron siempre superiores que en el arroyo adyacente. Las determinaciones químicas del suelo mostraron que el amonio, los cationes básicos, el aluminio y la saturación de este aumentaron significativamente en el suelo de la planicie de inundación comparado al suelo de las praderas. La CIC fue marginalmente diferente en los transectos estudiados. Se concluye que los ecosistemas forestales nativos son un filtro efectivo para los nutrientes estudiados, destacándose el rol de los suelos asociados.

Aquands are soils derived from holocenic volcanic ashes located in southern Chile. Due to the presence of very high levels of organic matter (30 %), these soils present a high total porosity (80 %) but at the same time, a limited water storage capacity due to their shallow soil depths. The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of land use change of a Duric Histic Placaquand (Ñadi) soil on soil physical properties and their consequences on water and temperature dynamics. The volumetric water content (qField) and soil temperature (T) were registered at different depths in a Ñadi soil under a secondary native forest (sNF) and naturalized grassland (NG). Undisturbed soil samples were collected to analyze the water retention curve, saturated (Ks) and unsaturated (Ku) hydraulic conductivity and water repellency. The dynamics of rainfall and water table depth (WT) were registered using a rain gauge and groundwater wells. The land use change of a Ñadi soil from sNF to NG induced soil structural changes in the first 15 cm of soil reducing the amount of macropores under NG and affecting the hydraulic conductivity function as well as qField and T dynamics, i.e. while the WT in winter reached the soil surface in the NG, under sNF the air-filled pores were still present. Similarly, the T gradients increased as qField decreased, being more intensive under NG. A nonhomogeneous soil wetting and water infiltration was assessed, which can be related to an increased spatial water repellency, soil hydraulic properties and rainfalls.

Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) production under tunnels has spread in recent years. However, there is little information on the productive and physiological responses of blueberry grown under high tunnels. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of high tunnel microclimate on the physiological and productive responses of blueberries. Chile has different types of soil and climate conditions that favor a wide range of agricultural activities that can generate potential atmospheric contamination like greenhouse gases (GHG). Nevertheless, the contribution of agricultural soils to atmospheric emissions has yet to be measured in Chile. The aim of this study was to assess seasonal variability of CO2 and N2O effluxes in situ from a volcanic ash-derived soil under different agronomic management practices. Gas samples were obtained from headspaces of non-fixed closed chambers in an annual crop rotation under a no-till system in an Andisol in southern Chile (36° S). Two N-sources (NH4+ and NO3-) and ammonium fertilization plus two lime doses (0.5 and 1 Mg ha-1) were considered for soil treatments Effluxes of CO2 and N2O were determined periodically for 1 yr, and soil variables, such as temperature, water, and mineral N content, were recorded. Results showed that CO2 effluxes respond to a seasonal pattern. No effect was evidenced when considering crop management practices with a maximum of 53.2 ± 8.5 kg CO2-C ha-1 d-1 in the wet fall period and a minimum of 9.7 ± 2.1 kg CO2-C ha-1 d-1 for summer, fall dry period, and winter. N2O efflux was highly variable throughout the year and showed no influence of treatments or season variability with a mean of 0.95 kg N2O-N ha-1 yr-1. Soil mineral N variations are not related to GHG effluxes as a single variable. Results indicate that an Andisol under a no-till system in southern Chile has a low N2O emission potential, and higher CO2 emissions are mainly produced in wet seasons (wet fall and/or spring). Chile tiene diferentes tipos de suelo y condiciones climáticas que favorecen un amplio rango de actividades agrícolas, las cuales pueden generar contaminación atmosférica potencial como los gases de efecto invernadero (GHG). Sin embargo, mediciones de la contribución de los suelos agrícolas en las emisiones atmosféricas de estos gases no ha sido realizado todavía en Chile. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo determinar los flujos de emisiones in situ de CO2 y N2O desde un suelo derivado de cenizas volcánicas bajo diferentes prácticas de manejo agronómico determinando su variación estacional. Las muestras gaseosas fueron obtenidas desde el espacio aéreo de cámaras cerradas no-fijas en una rotación anual de cultivos bajo sistema de cero labranza en un Andisol del Sur de Chile (36° S). Dos fuentes de N (NH4+ y NO3-) y fertilización amoniacal más dos dosis de encalado (0.5 y 1 Mg ha-1) fueron considerados como tratamientos. Los flujos de CO2 y N2O fueron determinados periódicamente en un período de 1 año y variables de suelo tales como temperatura, contenido de agua, y N mineral fueron registrados. Los resultados muestran que los flujos de CO2 responden a patrones de estacionalidad. No fue evidenciado un efecto cuando fue considerada la práctica de manejo del cultivo, con un máximo de 53.2 ± 8.5 kg CO2-C ha-1 d-1 en la estación húmeda de otoño, y un mínimo de 9.7 ± 2.1 kg CO2-C ha-1 d-1 para verano, estación seca de otoño e invierno. El flujo de N2O fue altamente variable en el año y no muestra influencia de tratamientos o estacionalidad, con un promedio de 2.6 ± 0.6 g N2O-N ha-1 d-1. Variaciones de N mineral del suelo no están relacionadas a los flujos de GHG como una variable sola. Los resultados indican que un Andisol bajo sistema de cero labranza en el Sur de Chile tiene un bajo potencial de emisiones de N2O, y las mayores emisiones de CO2 son producidas principalmente en estaciones húmedas (otoño húmedo y/o primavera).

In agricultural activities, the main greenhouse gases (GHG) are those related to C and N global cycles. The impact of agriculture on GHG emissions has become a key issue, especially when considering that natural C and N cycles are influenced by agricultural development. This review focuses on CO2 and N2O soil emissions in terrestrial ecosystems, with emphasis in Chilean and similar agro-ecosystems around the world. The influence of land use and crop management practices on CO2 and N2O emissions is analyzed; some mitigation measures to reduce such emissions are also discussed here. More knowledge on the biological processes that promote of GHG emissions from soil will allow creating opportunities for agricultural development under friendly-environmental conditions, where soil can act as a reservoir and/or emitter of GHG, depending on the balance of inputs and outputs. En actividades agrícolas los principales gases de efecto invernadero (GHG) son los relacionados con los ciclos globales de C y N. El impacto de la agricultura sobre las emisiones GHG se ha convertido en una cuestión clave, especialmente si se considera que los ciclos naturales C y N se ven influidos por el desarrollo agrícola. Esta revisión se centra en emisiones de CO2 y N2O del suelo en los ecosistemas terrestres, con énfasis en agro-ecosistemas de Chile y similares alrededor del mundo. Se analiza la influencia del uso del suelo y las prácticas de manejo del cultivo sobre emisiones de CO2 y N2O, se discuten medidas de mitigación para reducir estas emisiones. Un mayor conocimiento sobre los procesos biológicos que promueven las emisiones GHG del suelo permitirá la creación de oportunidades para el desarrollo agrícola en condiciones ambientalmente amigables, donde el suelo puede actuar como un reservorio y/o emisor de GHG, dependiendo del balance de entradas y salidas.

Las comunidades boscosas de Araucaria-M'rhofagus de la Cordillera de Los Andes en Chile y Argentina se han adaptado a los evenlos catastróficos de incendio, los cuales tienen una frecuencia histórica que últimamente se ha incrementado junto a la severidad. La dinámica de las poblaciones de Araucaria araucana y Noihofagus spp., ha sido explicada e interpretada según la ocurrencia de estos eventos. Sin embargo, poco se sabe sobre la respuesta inicial de la regeneración de la comunidad vegetal, la cual es clave para el desarrollo de las poblaciones arbóreas adaptadas a los eventos masivos de fuego en estos ambientes. Los flujos inorgánicos de N en los bosques templados del centro-sur de Chile (38° - 42° S) tienen un patrón conservativo, donde el rol de la actividad biológica del suelo es clave para la estabilidad del ecosistema. Las alteraciones exógenas, representan un factor de desequilibrio en estos ambientes y poco se :onoce sobre su influencia en los procesos de transformación del N. Los procesos autotróficos del suelo son de gran importancia en el ciclo N, los cuales sufren cambios temporales por efecto de las alteraciones de incendio. Frente a eventos de desequilibrio del ecosisteina, las asociaciones micorrízicas arbusculares favorecen la recuperación de la comunidad vegetal y evitan el desplazamiento del ecosistema fuera de sus límites de umbral de recuperación. La actividad enzimática es una herramienta útil del monitoreo de la salud del suelo frente a alteraciones. Se discuten los siguientes supuestos: la regeneración vegetativa de arbustos y hierbas perennes es la principal vía de recuperación de la cubierta vegetal en bosques de AraucariaNoihofagus; las alteraciones de incendio reducen la mineralización N en el suelo e incrementan las pérdidas de N inorgánico vía agua de escorrentía; la regeneración vegetal post-incendio es favorecida por las asociaciones micorrízicas arbusculares; y la actividad enzimática del suelo, es una herramienta integradora del daño al componente microbiológico autotrófico en este sustrato. Novedosas respuestas son encontradas frente a estos planteamientos y nuevos patrones son planteados, con el fin de explicar algunos procesos ecosistémicos en bosques prístinos, en el bioma templado del Cono Sur de América. Temperate forests in Chile are not yet affected by elevated nitrogen (N) deposition. However, anthropogenic activities such as transport, industry and agriculture have been increasing in central and southern Chile. These activities can substantially alter the atmospheric N load and subsequently N deposition. Nitrogen deposition data for central and southern Chile are scares and scattered. In order to assess trends of N deposition a good knowledge of past and current N depositions is however essential. This study presents an overview of the existing N deposition data in Chile. In central Chile, dry deposition has been estimated at 0.8 kg NO3--N ha-1 yr-1 and 1.0 kg NH4+-N ha-1 yr-1, giving a total of 1.8 kg N ha-1 yr-1 and wet deposition was 0.4 kg NO3--N ha-1 and 0.6 kg NH4+-N ha-1 yr-1, giving a total of 1.0 kg N ha-1 yr-1. In southern Chile, inorganic N deposition via rainwater are less than 1.0 kg N ha-1 yr-1 in the coast range and < 5.0 kg N ha-1 yr-1 in the Andes. The N input via cloudwater in the coast range was estimated at 1.1 kg NO3--N ha-1 yr-1 and 0.9 kg NH4+-N ha-1 yr-1, versus 1.0 kg NO3--N ha-1 yr-1 and 1.4 kg NH4+-N ha-1 yr-1 the Andean mountains. Organic N input in rainwater can be a substantial N input in temperate forests of southern Chile. Deposition of organic N in Andes has been reported at 8.2 kg N ha-1 yr-1. This values is 11-fold higher than in the coast range (0.7 kg N ha-1 yr-1) Los bosques templados de Chile aun no han sido afectados por una elevada depositación de nitrógeno (N). Sin embargo, las actividades antropogénicas como el transporte, industria y agricultura se han incrementado en la región centro y sur de Chile. Estas actividades pueden sustancialmente alterar la carga atmosférica de nitrógeno y su consecuente depositación. Información sobre depositación atmosférica de N para el centro y sur de Chile esta escasa y dispersa. El poseer un registro de la depositación de nitrógeno, es esencial para un buen conocimiento de la situación pasada y actual. Este estudio presenta una revisión de la información de N depositación en Chile. En Chile central, la depositación seca fue estimada en 0,8 kg NO3--N ha-1 año-1 y 1,0 kg NH4+-N ha-1 año-1, con un total de 1,8 kg N ha-1 año-1. La depositación húmeda fue de 0,4 kg NO3--N ha-1 año-1 y 0,6 kg NH4+-N ha-1 año-1 con un total de 1,0 kg N ha-1 año-1. En el Sur de Chile, la depositación de N-inorgánico vía precipitación en la Cordillera de la Costa fue < 1,0 kg N ha-1 año-1 y en la Cordillera de los Andes inferior a 5,0 kg N ha-1 año-1. Por otro lado, el ingreso de nitrógeno estimado vía neblina en la Cordillera de la Costa fue de 1,1 kg NO3--N ha-1 año-1 y 0,9 kg NH4+-N ha-1 año-1, mientras en la Cordillera de los Andes con 1,0 y 1,4 kg N ha-1 año-1 para el nitrato y amonio, respectivamente. La entrada de N orgánico a través del agua de lluvia podría tener una contribución sustancial en los bosques templados del sur de Chile. Estimaciones de la depositación de N orgánico en la Cordillera de los Andes presenta valores 11 veces mayor (8,2 kg N ha-1 año-1) que en los bosques de la Cordillera de la Costa (0,7 kg N ha-1 año-1)
