Abstract

Gut microbiome diversity and functions are jointly shaped by the host’s genetic background and environmental conditions, but the consequences of this interaction are still unclear. Unravelling the effect of the interaction between evolution and environment on the gut microbiome is particularly relevant considering the unprecedented level of human-driven disruption on the ecological and evolutionary trajectories of species. Here, we aimed to evaluate whether size-selective mortality influences the gut microbiome of medaka (Oryzias latipes), how environment conditions modulate the effect of the genetic background of medaka on their microbiota, and the association between microbiome diversity and medaka fitness. To do so, we studied two lineages of medaka that were raised under antagonistic size-selective regimes for 10 generations (i.e. the largest or the smallest breeders were removed to mimic fishing-like or natural mortality). In pond mesocosms, the two lineages were subjected to contrasting population density and light intensity (i.e. used as a proxy of primary production, hence resource availability). We observed significant differences in the gut microbiome composition and richness between the two lines, and this effect was mediated by light intensity. Indeed, the bacterial richness of fishing-like medaka (small-breeder line) was reduced by 34% under low-light conditions compared to high-light conditions, while it remained unchanged in natural mortality-selected medaka (large-breeder line). However, the observed changes in bacterial richness did not correlate with changes in growth rate or body condition, possibly due to functional redundancy among the microbial taxa residing in the gut. Given the growing evidence about the gut microbiomes importance to host health, more in-depth studies are required to fully understand the role of the microbiome in size-selected organisms and the possible ecosystem-level consequences.

Abstract

Harvesting is typically size-selective, targeting large individuals. This is expected to lead to reduced average body size and earlier maturation (i.e. faster life histories). Such changes can also affect traits seemingly unrelated to harvesting, including immunocompetence. Here we test four hypotheses on how harvesting affects immunocompetence based on the pace-of-life syndrome, habitat area limitation and energy allocation and acquisition, respectively. We empirically evaluate these hypotheses using an experimental system consisting of the ectoparasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli and lines of guppies Poecilia reticulata that had been subjected to either small, random or large size-selective harvest for over 12 years. We followed the infection progression of individually infected fish for 15 days. We found significant differences between the harvested lines: fish from the small-harvested lines had the highest parasite loads. During the early phase of the infection, parasite loads were the lowest in the large-harvested lines, whereas the terminal loads were the lowest for the random-harvested lines. These results agree with the predictions from the energetic trade-off and surface area hypotheses. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of the consequences of size-selective harvesting on immunocompetence.

20. Fishing Can Turn Big Fish Into Small Fish

Abstract

People affect animals and plants all over the world. One example is by fishing. Fishing selects fish with unique traits. First, fishers take large fish out of the water. So, populations become small and have only small fish left in them. These fish have babies for the first time when they are younger and smaller. Second, different fishing methods can select fish with different behaviors. So, fishers might catch more timid fish or more active fish, depending on the method. Fishing makes fish populations less diverse and productive. Less diverse means there are only small fish or active fish, not a mix of big, small, active, and timid. Less productive means fewer fish to catch later. Small, less diverse populations are weaker and cannot respond to large changes in the environment. Weaker populations are more difficult to fish in a way that will allow the population to survive. So, fishing makes the fish populations less valuable to the fishers.

Abstract

Unclear regulations on conflicts of interest (COI) might lead to nepotism in the handing out of academic prizes and awards awarded by professional societies and associations. To assess to availability of statements on COIs, we systematically searched the websites of 58 psychological societies. We found that 27.6% had no COI statement available on their website. 27.6% included a statement on COIs on their website, but did not mention awards or prizes specifically. Only 44.8% of the included societies had an online COI statement that included a section on awards. Therefore, the majority of the included societies did not feature a findable COI statement pertaining to awards on their website.

35. Effects of ambient oxygen and size-selective mortality on growth and maturation in guppies

Abstract

Growth, onset of maturity and investment in reproduction are key traits for understanding variation in life-history strategies. Many environmental factors affect variation in these traits, but for fish, hypoxia and size-dependent mortality have become increasingly important because of human activities, such as increased nutrient enrichment (eutrophication), climate warming and selective fishing. Here, we study experimentally the effect of oxygen availability on maturation and growth in guppies (Poecilia reticulata) from two different selected lines, one subjected to positive and the other negative size-dependent fishing. This is the first study to assess the effects of both reduced ambient oxygen and size-dependent mortality in fish. We show that reduced ambient oxygen led to stunting, early maturation and high reproductive investment. Likewise, lineages that had been exposed to high mortality of larger-sized individuals displayed earlier maturation at smaller size, greater investment in reproduction and faster growth. These life-history changes were particularly evident for males. The widely reported trends towards earlier maturation in wild fish populations are often interpreted as resulting from size-selective fishing. Our results highlight that reduced ambient oxygen, which has received little experimental investigation to date, can lead to similar phenotypic changes. Thus, changes in ambient oxygen levels can be a confounding factor that occurs in parallel with fishing, complicating the causal interpretation of changes in life-history traits. We believe that better disentangling of the effects of these two extrinsic factors, which increasingly affect many freshwater and marine ecosystems, is important for making more informed management decisions.

Abstract

Increased mortality from fishing is expected to favor faster life histories, realized through earlier maturation, increased reproductive investment, and reduced postmaturation growth. There is also direct and indirect selection on behavioral traits. Molecular genetic methods have so far contributed minimally to understanding such fisheries-induced evolution (FIE), but a large body of literature studying evolution using phenotypic methods has suggested that FIE in life-history traits, in particular maturation traits, is commonplace in exploited fish populations. Although no phenotypic study in the wild can individually provide conclusive evidence for FIE, the observed common pattern suggest a common explanation, strengthening the case for FIE. This interpretation is supported by theoretical and experimental studies. Evidence or FIE of behavioral traits is limited from the wild, but strong from experimental studies. We suggest that such evolution is also common, but has so far been overlooked.

Abstract

This study assessed whether fishing gear was selective on behavioural traits, such as boldness and actvity, and how this was related with a productivity trait, growth. Female guppies "Poecilia reticulata" were screened for their behavior on the shy-bold axis and activity, and then tested whether they were captured differently by passive and active fishing gear, here representd by a trap and a trawl. Both gears were selective on boldness; bold individuals were caught faster by the trap, but escaped the trawl more often. Boldness and gear vulnerability showed weak correlations with activity and growth. The results draw attention to the importance of the behavioural dimension and fishery productivity.

46. Ecological and evolutionary effects of harvesting: Lessons from the candy-fish experiment

Abstract

Understanding the challenges of sustainable fisheries management is not easy for non-specialists, and even many specialists fail to appreciate the potential evolutionary consequences of harvest. We propose candy-fish experiments as a savoury approach to teaching and disseminating the key principles of applied ecology and evolution to students, practitioners and the general public. We performed a simple experiment where the resource was represented by fish-shaped candy of distinct colours and flavours (strawberry and liquorice). Typically, harvesting was neither ecologically sustainable (55% of the populations were extinct by the end of the experiment) nor evolutionarily sustainable (most surviving populations had liquorice fish only). This harvest-induced evolution went apparently unnoticed. Somewhat encouragingly, the harvest was most likely ecologically sustainable when a person spontaneously took the role of a stock manager.

47. The importance of social dimension and maturation stage for the probabilistic maturation reaction norm in Poecilia reticulata

Abstract

Maturation is an important event in an organism's life history, with important implications on dynamics of both wild and captive populations. The probabilistic maturation reaction norm (PMRN) has emerged as an important method to describe variation in maturation in wild fish. Because most PMRNs are based on age and size only, it is important to understand limitations of these variables in explaining maturation. We experimentally assessed (i) the sensitivity of age- and size-based PMRNs to unaccounted sources of plasticity, (ii) the role of social environment on maturation and (iii) the significance of estimating PMRNs early and late in the maturation process (initiation and completion of maturation, respectively). We reared male guppies (Poecilia reticulata) under laboratory conditions, subjected to two food levels and three different social cues. We found that growth and social environment affected the maturation in a way that could not be accounted for by their effect on age and size. PMRNs estimated for the initiation stage were less plastic (growth differences and social cues influenced the PMRN shape only little) than those for completion. The initiation of maturation is probably closer to the maturation "decision" and allows determining factors influencing maturation decision most accurately.

48. What can selection experiments teach us about fisheries-induced evolution?

Abstract

There is evidence that fisheries are altering the phenotypic composition of fish populations, often in ways that may reduce the value of fish stocks for the exploiters. Despite the increasing number of theoretical and field studies, there is still debate as to whether these changes are genetic, can be reversed, and are occurring rapidly enough to be considered in fisheries management. We review the contribution that selection experiments have already provided with respect to the study of the evolutionary effect of fisheries, identify issues that still require more study, and outline future directions for doing so. Selection experiments have already been crucial in showing that harvesting can lead to phenotypic and genetic evolution over relatively short time frames. Furthermore, the experiments have shown the changes involve many other traits than those under direct selection, and that these changes tend to have population-level consequences, including a decreasing fisheries yield. However, experiments focused on fisheries-induced evolution that fulfil all our requirements are still lacking. Future studies should have more controlled and realistic set-ups and assess genetic changes in maturation and growth (i.e. traits most often reported to change) to be more relevant to exploited populations in the wild.
