Horizontal transmission between distantly related species has been used to explain how Wolbachia infect multiple species at astonishing rates despite the selection for resistance. Recently, a terrestrial isopod species was found to be infected by an unusual strain of supergroup F Wolbachia. However, only Wolbachia of supergroup B is typically found in isopods. One possibility is that these isopods acquired the infection because of their recurrent contact with termites—a group with strong evidence of infection by supergroup F Wolbachia. Thus, our goals were: (1) check if the infection was an isolated case in isopods, or if it revealed a broader pattern; (2) search for Wolbachia infection in the termites within Brazil; and (3) look for evidence consistent with horizontal transmission between isopods and termites. We collected Neotroponiscus terrestrial isopods and termites along the Brazilian coastal Atlantic forest. We sequenced and identified the Wolbachia strains found in these groups using coxA, dnaA, and fpbA genes. We constructed phylogenies for both bacteria and host taxa and tested for coevolution. We found the supergroup F Wolbachia in other species and populations of Neotroponiscus, and also in Nasutitermes and Procornitermes termites. The phylogenies showed that, despite the phylogenetic distance between isopods and termites, the Wolbachia strains clustered together. Furthermore, cophylogenetic analyses showed significant jumps of Wolbachia between terrestrial isopods and termites. Thus, our study suggests that the horizontal transmission of supergroup F Wolbachia between termites and terrestrial isopods is likely. Our study also helps understanding the success and worldwide distribution of this symbiont.

The current work provides a new state record of the snake Chironius carinatus (Linnaeus, 1758) based on two specimens collected in the Atlantic Forest of Paraíba state, northeastern Brazil. This species occurs in the Amazon and Atlantic Forests. The new records fills in a gap in the species’ distribution on the Brazilian coast. In Paraíba, C. carinatus occurs in sympatry with two other Chironius Fitzinger, 1826 species, C. flavolineatus Jan, 1863 and C. exoletus (Linnaeus, 1758).

Egg incubation on the female abdomen is the parental care behavior observed in aeglids, in which eggs are kept adhered to maternal pleopods and maintained, cleaned and aerated. In A. platensis, egg attachment occurs with the aid of pleopodal setae, which are twisted around their axis in the distal region, forming the funiculus, and pleopodal glands, which are responsible for the production of the adhesive substance that seems to be involved in egg fixation to pleopodal setae. Those glands are acini formed by secretory cells arranged concentrically around a central duct, giving them a rosette appearance. Two types of secretory cells were observed, those that produce electron-lucid vesicles and those having electron-dense ones. Both kinds of vesicles are released in a duct whose opening pore is located on the pleopodal surface and constitute the adhesive substance that coats eggs and pleopodal setae, ensuring egg fixation to the female body and maternal care maintenance. This study investigates the internal and external morphology of Aegla platensis pleopods, to understand the egg attachment process and identify the structures involved in this phenomenon. Three microscopy techniques are used: scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and optical microscopy (OM).

Terrestrial isopods are soil macroarthropods that have few known parasites and parasitoids. All known parasitoids are from the family Rhinophoridae (Insecta: Diptera). The present article reviews the known biology of Rhinophoridae flies and presents the first record of Rhinophoridae larvae on a Neotropical woodlouse species. We also compile and update all published interaction records. The Neotropical woodlouseBalloniscusglaberwas parasitized by two different larval morphotypes of Rhinophoridae. Including this new record, there are 18 Isopoda species known to be parasitized and 13 Rhinophoridae species with known hosts, resulting in 35 interactions. There are a total of 53 interaction records from Holarctic and Neotropical countries. Of the 18 known isopod hosts, only five species have more than one parasitoid, including the new Neotropical host record presented in this work.

Although new methods and data are conquering space in the field of taxonomy, such as integrative taxonomy, most terrestrial isopod species are still described based only on morphology. Species of the genus Atlantoscia Ferrara and Taiti, 1981 were the first and are the unique terrestrial isopods from the Neotropics for which a molecular phylogeny was already conducted. Previous results indicated that this genus could be paraphyletic, and a more detailed analysis would be required. Our aim was to reconstruct the phylogeny of Atlantoscia using mitochondrial and nuclear markers and test its monophyly by integrating molecular and morphological data. We observed that, indeed, Atlantoscia is paraphyletic. Atlantoscia ituberasensis Campos-Filho, Lisboa and Araujo, 2013 and Atlantoscia rubromarginata Araujo and Leistikow, 1999 were placed in a new genus of terrestrial isopods, Paratlantoscia gen. nov., together with a new species described in the present study, Paratlantoscia robusta sp. nov. The new genus is defined by the presence of specialized respiratory areas in the pleopod exopods and its validity is highly corroborated by molecular analyses and by biogeographic information. This study highlights the importance of multiple and complementary perspectives as a way to improve the quality of species hypothesis and associated descriptions.

The soil is a heterogeneous habitat with layers that differ in many aspects. Soil animals’ morphological adaptations relate to specific microhabitat. We compared cuticle surface structures and ultrastructure of Balloniscus glaber (endogeic) and Atlantoscia floridana (epigeic) using microscopy techniques to understand how morphological characteristics allow sympatry. Species differed in scale and sensillum type and disposition, as well as cuticle thickness and layer proportion. Balloniscus glaber has curved scales and robust, caudally oriented sensilla that are most likely adaptive features for endogeic lifestyle. Its cuticle has high overall thickness and numerous stacks that provide toughness compatible with clinging strategy and higher tolerance to seasonal fluctuation. Atlantoscia floridana is an epigeic species with flat scales and long perpendicular sensilla, not adapted to the soil layer. Its delicate and flexible cuticle with thinner stacks makes it an agile runner although with lower tolerance to seasonal changes. Overall, differences in surface structure are related to microhabitat selection and ecological niche, so species can occur in same location. Differences in cuticle ultrastructure relate to behavioral strategies and environmental tolerance. This way, knowledge of species’ ecology is complemented by morphological data that can help to explain habitat partition.

Currently Neotroponiscus comprises eight species. In this study, two new species of this genus of terrestrial isopods are described. Neotroponiscus iporangaensis sp. nov. was collected in limestone caves located in Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR). Neotroponiscus tuberculatus sp. nov. occurs in iron ore caves of the Iron Quadrangle (local name Quadrilatero Ferrifero) and represents the first species of the genus recorded in iron caves. Many monitoring studies use marking techniques to obtain dispersal data on individuals. Marking procedures may influence the vital activities of the terrestrial isopods, such as feeding behavior. The objective of this study was to identify the efficiency of different materials for external marking of woodlice and the influence on their feeding performance. Cyanoacrylate glue + glitter and nail polish were used as separate marking materials on three species: Balloniscus glaber, Benthana picta and Armadillidium vulgare. This study describes and illustrates the morphology of the second juvenile stage of the blue-fingered burrowing crayfish Parastacus caeruleodactylus. One female carrying 20 juveniles was collected in January 2019 from a swamp forest in the municipality of Dom Pedro de Alcântara, state of Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil. Juveniles were dissected and the appendages were mounted in slides. The general morphology and the pattern of attachment of the second juvenile stage of P. caeruleodactylus correspond to that reported for other parastacids. The main differences among the co-generic species are related to the number of articles in the flagella of the antennae, the number of spines in the antennal scale, the number of setae in the articles of the appendages, the number of teeth in the mandible molar and incisor processes, the absence of segmentation in the exopod flagellum of the maxillipeds and the number of teeth in the crista dentata of the ischium of maxilliped 3.
