Abstract Background Celiac plexus block has been commonly utilized for the treatment of chronic pancreatitis-associated abdominal pain. Prospective studies suggest efficacy in 30 to 50% of patients, although no randomized sham-controlled trials have been performed. The objective of this study is to assess the effect of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided celiac plexus block on abdominal pain in patients with documented chronic pancreatitis. Methods This is a two-arm randomized sham-controlled trial with blinded evaluators. The study will be conducted at multiple academic sites in the United States who are members of the United States Pancreatic Disease Study Group (USPG). Patients referred for EUS to exclude chronic pancreatitis as a cause of abdominal pain as well as those with established painful chronic pancreatitis undergoing EUS for another indication will be eligible. At the time of EUS with confirmation of chronic pancreatitis by standard EUS diagnostic criteria, patients will be randomized to either celiac plexus block or sham whereby an anesthetic and steroid combination will be injected into the celiac plexus or saline will be injected into the gastric lumen with the same type of needle as used for celiac plexus block, respectively. The main outcome measure will be a 50% reduction in abdominal pain using the Brief Pain Inventory Short Form (BPI-SF) at 1 month post-intervention. A number of secondary outcomes will be measured including visual analog scale (VAS), Comprehensive Pain Assessment Tool Short Form (COMPAT-SF) pain scores, and quality of life using a pancreas-specific validated measure (PANQOLI). Discussion In this study, the effect of celiac plexus block on abdominal pain in patients with chronic pancreatitis will be compared to a sham intervention. This randomized trial will offer a definitive assessment of the role of celiac plexus block for the treatment of abdominal pain in this setting. Abstract Background Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are recommended for the management of acute postoperative pain as part of a multimodal strategy to reduce opioid use, relieve pain, and reduce chronic pain in non-cardiac surgery. However, significant concerns arise in cardiac surgery due to the potential adverse effects of NSAID including increased bleeding and acute kidney injury (AKI). We hypothesized that NSAIDs are effective against pain and safe in the early postoperative period following cardiac surgery, taking contraindications into account. Methods The KETOPAIN trial is a prospective, double blind, 1:1 ratio, versus placebo multicentric trial, randomizing 238 patients scheduled for cardiac surgery. Written consent will be obtained for all participants. The inclusion criterion is patients more than 18 years old undergoing for elective cardiac surgery under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Patients will be allocated to the intervention (ketoprofen) group (n = 119) or the control (placebo) group (n = 119). In the intervention group, in addition to the standard treatment, patients will receive NSAIDs (ketoprofen) at a dose of 100 mg each 12 h 48 h after. The control group, in addition to the standard treatment, will receive a placebo of NSAIDs every 12 h for 48 h after surgery. An intention-to-treat analysis will be performed. The primary endpoint will be the intensity of acute postoperative pain at rest at 24 h from the end of surgery. Pain will be assessed using the numerous rating scale. The secondary endpoints will be postoperative pain on coughing during chest physiotherapy, postoperative pain until day 7, the pain trajectory between day 3 and day 7, cumulative opioid consumption within 48 h after surgery, nausea and vomiting, the occurrence of postoperative pulmonary complications within the first 7 days after surgery, neuropathic pain at 3 months, and quality of life at 3 months. Discussion NSAIDs function as non-selective, reversible inhibitors of the cyclooxygenase enzyme and play a role in a multimodal pain management approach. While there are recommendations supporting the use of NSAIDs in major non-cardiac surgery, recent guidelines do not favor their use in cardiac surgery. However, this is based on low-quality evidence. Major concerns regarding NSAID use in cardiac surgery patients are potential increase in postoperative bleeding or AKI. However, few studies support the possible use of NSAIDs without the risk of bleeding and/or AKI. Also, in a recent French survey, many anesthesiologists reported using NSAIDs in cardiac surgery. To date, no large randomized study has been conducted to evaluate the efficacy of NSAIDs in the management of postoperative pain in cardiac surgery. The expected outcome of this study is an improvement in the management of acute postoperative pain in cardiac surgery with a multimodal strategy including the use of NSAIDs. To mitigate the rising threat of Android malware, researchers have been actively looking for mechanisms that will enable rapid and accurate malware detection. Recently, attention has been paid to the use of audio-based features derived through the use of music information retrieval techniques. Since the exploration of these features is still in the early stages, there is a need to continue experimentation, especially with features that have yet to be used for this task. In this paper, we present the results of an ongoing investigation into the use of audio-based features for Android malware detection. In addition to extracting new audio-based features, this research aims to find the most discriminative subset of audio-based features through a comparative evaluation of Wrapper-based metaheuristic optimization algorithms on two separate datasets. First, we sonified the Android APK datasets, then extracted 191 static audio-based features from the resultant audio datasets. Fourteen different nature-inspired Wrapper-based metaheuristic optimization algorithms were evaluated for feature selection, and the selected features were then used to train the light gradient-boosting machine (LGBM) classification model. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach exhibits high discriminative capabilities that can outperform other state-of-the-art techniques. The best outcome for Android malware detection was obtained using features selected by the Genetic Algorithm, which achieved 50.26% feature reduction and an improved classification accuracy of 99.72%.

Background Post-induction anaesthesia often promotes intraoperative hypotension (IOH) that can worsen postoperative outcomes. This study aims to assess the benefit of norepinephrine versus ephedrine at the induction of anaesthesia to prevent postoperative complications following major abdominal surgery by preventing IOH.Methods and analysis The EPON STUDY is a prospective single-centre randomised controlled trial with the planned inclusion of 500 patients scheduled for major abdominal surgery at the Amiens University Hospital. The inclusion criteria are patients aged over 50 years weighing more than 50 kg with an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status score of ≥2 undergoing major abdominal surgery under general anaesthesia. Patients are allocated either to the intervention group (n=250) or the standard group (n=250). In the intervention group, the prevention of post-induction IOH is performed with norepinephrine (dilution to 0.016 mg/mL) using an electric syringe pump at a rate of 0.48 mg/h (30 mL/h) from the start of anaesthesia and then titrated to achieve the haemodynamic target. In the control group, the prevention of post-induction IOH is performed with manual titration of ephedrine, with a maximal dose of 30 mg, followed by perfusion with norepinephrine. In both groups, the haemodynamic target to maintain is a mean arterial pressure (MAP) of 65 mm Hg or 70 mm Hg for patients with a medical history of hypertension. An intention-to-treat analysis will be performed. The primary outcome is the Clavien–Dindo score assessed up to 30 days postoperatively. The secondary endpoints are the length of hospital stay and length of stay in an intensive care unit/postoperative care unit; postoperative renal function; postoperative cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, haematological and infectious complications at 1 month; and volume of intraoperative vascular filling and mortality at 1 month.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was obtained from the committee of protection of the persons of Ile de France in May 2021 (number 21 05 41). The authors will be involved in disseminating the research findings (through attending conferences and co-authoring papers). The results of the study will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences.Trial registration number NCT05276596.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify demographic, clinical and medical care factors associated with mortality in three nursing homes in France. Methods: Two nursing homes were hospital-dependent, had connections with infection prevention and control departments, and had permanent physicians. A third nursing home had no direct connection with a general hospital, no infection control practitioner, and no permanent physician. The main outcome was death. Results: During the first 3 months of the outbreak, 224 of 375 (59.7%) residents were classified as COVID-19 cases and 57 of 375 (15.2%) died. The hospital-dependent nursing homes had lower COVID-19 case fatality rates in comparison with the non-hospital-dependent nursing home (15 [6.6%] vs 38 [25.8%], OR 0.20 [0.11–0.38], p = 0.001). During the first 3 weeks of the outbreak, mortality in COVID-19 patients decreased if they had a daily clinical examination (OR: 0.09 [0.03–0.35], p = 0.01), three vital signs measurement per day (OR: 0.06 [0.01–0.30], p = 0.001) and prophylactic anticoagulation (OR: 0 [0.00–0.24], p = 0.001). Conclusions: This study suggested that high mortality rates in some nursing homes during the COVID-19 outbreak might have been contributed by a lack of medical care management. Increasing human and material resources, encouraging presence of nursing home physicians and establishing a connection with general hospitals should be considered to deal with present and future health disasters in nursing homes.

In recent years, stream processing has become a prominent approach for incrementally handling large amounts of data, with special support and libraries in many programming languages. Unfortunately, support in Prolog has so far been lacking and most existing approaches are ad-hoc. To remedy this situation, we present lazy stream generators as a unified Prolog interface for stateful computations on both finite and infinite sequences of data that are produced incrementally through I/O and/or algorithmically. We expose stream generators to the application programmer in two ways: 1) through an abstract sequence manipulation API, convenient for defining custom generators, and 2) as idiomatic lazy lists, compatible with many existing list predicates. We define an algebra of stream generator operations that extends Prolog via an embedded language interpreter, provides a compact notation for composing generators and supports moving between the two isomorphic representations. As a special instance, we introduce answer stream generators that encapsulate the work of coroutining first-class logic engines and support interoperation between forward recursive AND-streams and backtracking-generated OR-streams. The current coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused 10,541 deaths among nursing home residents in France, by July 17th, 2020. This study reported the results of an urgent pre-hospital intervention in eight French nursing homes.A retrospective study was conducted from March 26th to May 7th, 2020, before and after the intervention of a task force which took action from April 9th to April 11th, 2020. The task force included nurses and specialists of the county general hospital. The intervention had four steps: i) daily notification of deaths; ii) audit by infectious diseases and hygiene specialists focused on nursing team reinforcing, tracking of suspected cases, patients’ cohorting, review of preventive and protective measures, hydration, thromboembolism prevention; iii) intervention of an emergency team which urgently performed procedures suggested; iv) relay with a geriatric team.There were a total of 770 residents distributed in eight facilities with capacity varying from 53 to 145 residents. The number of deaths peaked at 139 in week 2 and the trough at 0 occurred in weeks 6−7. Comparison between periods (before vs after intervention) showed a significant decrease in number of new deaths (83/770; 11% vs 35/687; 5%, p = 0.0001) and new COVID-19 cases (348/770; 45% vs 123/422; 29%, p

Pandemic influenza A virus (IAV) remains a significant threat to global health. Preparedness relies primarily upon a single class of neuraminidase (NA) targeted antivirals, against which resistance is steadily growing. The M2 proton channel is an alternative clinically proven antiviral target, yet a near-ubiquitous S31N polymorphism in M2 evokes resistance to licensed adamantane drugs. Hence, inhibitors capable of targeting N31 containing M2 (M2-N31) are highly desirable. Rational in silico design and in vitro screens delineated compounds favouring either lumenal or peripheral M2 binding, yielding effective M2-N31 inhibitors in both cases. Hits included adamantanes as well as novel compounds, with some showing low micromolar potency versus pandemic "swine" H1N1 influenza (Eng195) in culture. Interestingly, a published adamantane-based M2-N31 inhibitor rapidly selected a resistant V27A polymorphism (M2-A27/N31), whereas this was not the case for non-adamantane compounds. Nevertheless, combinations of adamantanes and novel compounds achieved synergistic antiviral effects, and the latter synergised with the neuraminidase inhibitor (NAi), Zanamivir. Thus, site-directed drug combinations show potential to rejuvenate M2 as an antiviral target whilst reducing the risk of drug resistance.

Background and study aims First-generation optical coherence tomography (OCT) has been shown to increase diagnostic sensitivity for malignant biliary and pancreatic-duct strictures. A newer OCT imaging system, NVision Volumetric Laser Endomicroscopy (VLE), allows for in vivo cross-sectional imaging of the ductal wall at the microstructure level during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). The aim of this study was to identify and evaluate characteristics on OCT that are predictive of benign and malignant strictures. Patients and methods Consecutive patients from six centers who underwent OCT between September 2016 and September 2017 were included in a dedicated registry. OCT images were analyzed, and nine recurring characteristics were further assessed. Final diagnosis was based on histology and/or surgical pathology. Results 86 patients were included (49 % male, mean age 64.7). OCT was performed in the bile duct in 79 patients and the pancreatic duct in seven. Nine OCT characteristics were identified: dilated hypo-reflective structures (n = 7), onion-skin layering (n = 8), intact layering (n = 17), layering effacement (n = 25), scalloping (n = 20), thickened epithelium (n = 42), hyper-glandular mucosa (n = 13), prominent blood vessels (n = 6), and a hyper-reflective surface (n = 20). Presence of hyper-glandular mucosa, hyper-reflective surface and scalloping significantly increased the odds of malignancy diagnosis by 6 times more (P = 0.0203; 95 % CI 1.3 to 26.5), 4.7 times more (P = 0.0255; 95 % CI 1.2 to 18.0) and 7.9 times more (P = 0.0035; 95 % CI 1.97 to 31.8) respectively. Conclusion By providing in-vivo cross-sectional imaging of the pancreatic and biliary duct wall, OCT technology may improve sensitivity in diagnosing malignant strictures and provide standardizable criteria predictive of malignancy.

End-of-life waste disposal is a major issue in Malaysia, where the country’s economy has suffered due to waste recovery issues. Many countries have successfully identified critical materials and products for increasing recycling rates, but not in Malaysia. Thus, the Malaysian government and businesses have had difficulty prioritising products for recycling. The absence of critical materials data has meant that a recovery strategy could not be planned wisely. In addition, the Product Recycling Desirability Model that was utilised by many countries to improve their recycling strategy could not be applied to Malaysia, as it requires critical materials data as input. To start with, Malaysia’s important materials have been identified. Next, two risk dimensions are defined: supply risk and material risk. The indicators are then weighted according to Malaysia’s scenarios. The scores are analyzed and applied to the Product Desirability Model to find desirable products for recycling. As a result, 89 materials were classified as critical to Malaysia’s economy, with palladium, rhodium, gold, platinum, and tellurium ranking first through to fifth. Critical materials scoring was used for the first time in Malaysia to comprehend the Product Recycling Desirability Model, a tool for prioritizing products for recycling. Additional analysis reveals that car batteries, tyres, PET bottles, mobile phones, and DVD-R are the top five most important recyclable products in Malaysia. With the material security database readily available and the novel evaluation system being employed to prioritize critical material supply, using risk supply and material security for Malaysia, the government, or private sector, can strategically start to implement recycling policies and initiatives to strengthen recycling efforts, which help to increase recycling rates.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing the way consumers, businesses, and governments interact with the physical and cyber worlds. More often than not, IoT devices are designed for specific functional requirements or use cases without paying too much attention to security. Consequently, attackers usually compromise IoT devices with lax security to retrieve sensitive information such as encryption keys, user passwords, and sensitive URLs. Moreover, expanding IoT use cases and the exponential growth in connected smart devices significantly widen the attack surface. Despite efforts to deal with security problems, the security of IoT devices and the privacy of the data they collect and process are still areas of concern in research. Whenever vulnerabilities are discovered, device manufacturers are expected to release patches or new firmware to fix the vulnerabilities. There is a need to prioritize firmware attacks, because they enable the most high-impact threats that go beyond what is possible with traditional attacks. In IoT, delivering and deploying new firmware securely to affected devices remains a challenge. This study aims to develop a security model that employs Blockchain and the InterPlanentary File System (IPFS) to secure firmware transmission over a low data rate, constrained Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN). The proposed security model ensures integrity, confidentiality, availability, and authentication and focuses on resource-constrained low-powered devices. To demonstrate the utility and applicability of the proposed model, a proof of concept was implemented and evaluated using low-powered devices. The experimental results show that the proposed model is feasible for constrained and low-powered LoRaWAN devices.

Abstract Background The optimal approach to the drainage of malignant obstruction at the liver hilum remains uncertain. We aim to compare percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) to endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) as the first intervention in patients with cholestasis due to suspected malignant hilar obstruction (MHO). Methods The INTERCPT trial is a multi-center, comparative effectiveness, randomized, superiority trial of PTBD vs. ERC for decompression of suspected MHO. One hundred and eighty-four eligible patients across medical centers in the United States, who provide informed consent, will be randomly assigned in 1:1 fashion via a web-based electronic randomization system to either ERC or PTBD as the initial drainage and, if indicated, diagnostic procedure. All subsequent clinical interventions, including crossover to the alternative procedure, will be dictated by treating physicians per usual clinical care. Enrolled subjects will be assessed for successful biliary drainage (primary outcome measure), adequate tissue diagnosis, adverse events, the need for additional procedures, hospitalizations, and oncological outcomes over a 6-month follow-up period. Subjects, treating clinicians and outcome assessors will not be blinded. Discussion The INTERCPT trial is designed to determine whether PTBD or ERC is the better initial approach when managing a patient with suspected MHO, a common clinical dilemma that has never been investigated in a randomized trial. Mitochondrial DNA encodes 13 proteins that comprise components of the respiratory chain that maintain oxidative phosphorylation. The replication of mitochondrial DNA is performed by the sole mitochondrial DNA polymerase γ. As acute myeloid leukemia (AML) cells and stem cells have an increased reliance on oxidative phosphorylation, we sought to evaluate polymerase γ inhibitors in AML. The thymidine dideoxynucleoside analog, alovudine, is an inhibitor of polymerase γ. In AML cells, alovudine depleted mitochondrial DNA, reduced mitochondrial encoded proteins, decreased basal oxygen consumption, and decreased cell proliferation and viability. To evaluate the effects of polymerase γ inhibition with alovudine in vivo, mice were xenografted with OCI-AML2 cells and then treated with alovudine. Systemic administration of alovudine reduced leukemic growth without evidence of toxicity and decreased levels of mitochondrial DNA in the leukemic cells. We also showed that alovudine increased the monocytic differentiation of AML cells. Genetic knockdown and other chemical inhibitors of polymerase γ also promoted AML differentiation, but the effects on AML differentiation were independent of reductions in oxidative phosphorylation or respiratory chain proteins. Thus, we have identified a novel mechanism by which mitochondria regulate AML fate and differentiation independent of oxidative phosphorylation. Moreover, we highlight polymerase γ inhibitors, such as alovudine, as novel therapeutic agents for AML.

Introduction: Aim of this study is to analyse the characteristics of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) inpatients infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Materials and Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, including coronavirus infectious disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients who developed VAP from March to May 2020 (VAP COVID-19). They were compared to non-COVID-19 patients who developed VAP from January 2011 to December 2019 (VAP NO COVID-19) and COVID-19 patients who did not develop VAP (NO VAP COVID-19). Results: Overall, 42 patients were included in the VAP COVID-19group, 37 in the NO VAP COVID-19 group, and 188 in the VAP NO COVID-19 group. VAP COVID-19 had significantly higher rates of shock (71% vs. 48%, p = 0.009), death in ICU (52% vs. 30%, p = 0.011), VAP recurrence (28% vs. 4%, p < 0.0001), positive blood culture (26% vs. 13%, p = 0.038), and polymicrobial culture (28% vs. 13%, p = 0.011) than VAP NO COVID-19. At the multivariate analysis, death in patients with VAP was associated with shock (p = 0.032) and SARS-CoV-2 (p = 0.008) infection. Conclusions: VAP in COVID-19 patients is associated with shock, bloodstream, and polymicrobial infections.

This paper engages the perspectives of teachers working in an English language department of a vocational college in China. It takes a transdisciplinary approach, applying constructs from the fields of comparative education, postcolonial theories in education, and critical applied linguistics to a case study of English language teaching; while the study assumes somewhat one-way flows of ‘best practices’ from ‘West’ to ‘East,’ it maintains a postcolonial skepticism of the East-West binary and of essentialist notions of culture and progressive education. Specifically, it situates the shifting conditions and practices of so-called Western pedagogies in China under heightened transnationalism and illuminates how these pedagogies are interpreted and translated by six English language instructors at a third tier college. It finds that the pressure to adopt Western, progressive approaches is both top-down and bottom up, that Chinese teachers have fairly consistent understandings of progressive modes, that they adopt Western approaches somewhat sporadically, and that, in practice, Western pedagogy presents a set of paradoxes for teachers and learners.

Chronic infection by hepatitis C virus (HCV) can lead to severe liver disease and is a global healthcare problem. The liver is highly metabolically active and one of its key functions is to control the balance of lipid throughout the body. A number of pathologies have been linked to the impact of HCV infection on liver metabolism. However, there is also growing evidence that hepatic metabolic processes contribute to the HCV life cycle. This review summarizes the relationship between lipid metabolism and key stages in the production of infectious HCV.

Exploring biophysical properties of virus-encoded components and their requirement for virus replication is an exciting new area of interdisciplinary virological research. To date, spatial resolution has only rarely been analyzed in computational/biophysical descriptions of virus replication dynamics. However, it is widely acknowledged that intracellular spatial dependence is a crucial component of virus life cycles. The hepatitis C virus-encoded NS5A protein is an endoplasmatic reticulum (ER)-anchored viral protein and an essential component of the virus replication machinery. Therefore, we simulate NS5A dynamics on realistic reconstructed, curved ER surfaces by means of surface partial differential equations (sPDE) upon unstructured grids. We match the in silico NS5A diffusion constant such that the NS5A sPDE simulation data reproduce experimental NS5A fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) time series data. This parameter estimation yields the NS5A diffusion constant. Such parameters are needed for spatial models of HCV dynamics, which we are developing in parallel but remain qualitative at this stage. Thus, our present study likely provides the first quantitative biophysical description of the movement of a viral component. Our spatio-temporal resolved ansatz paves new ways for understanding intricate spatial-defined processes central to specfic aspects of virus life cycles.

Mathematical models of virus dynamics have not previously acknowledged spatial resolution at the intracellular level despite substantial arguments that favor the consideration of intracellular spatial dependence. The replication of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) viral RNA (vRNA) occurs within special replication complexes formed from membranes derived from endoplasmatic reticulum (ER). These regions, termed membranous webs, are generated primarily through specific interactions between nonstructural virus-encoded proteins (NSPs) and host cellular factors. The NSPs are responsible for the replication of the vRNA and their movement is restricted to the ER surface. Therefore, in this study we developed fully spatio-temporal resolved models of the vRNA replication cycle of HCV. Our simulations are performed upon realistic reconstructed cell structures—namely the ER surface and the membranous webs—based on data derived from immunostained cells replicating HCV vRNA. We visualized 3D simulations that reproduced dynamics resulting from interplay of the different components of our models (vRNA, NSPs, and a host factor), and we present an evaluation of the concentrations for the components within different regions of the cell. Thus far, our model is restricted to an internal portion of a hepatocyte and is qualitative more than quantitative. For a quantitative adaption to complete cells, various additional parameters will have to be determined through further in vitro cell biology experiments, which can be stimulated by the results deccribed in the present study.

The authors examined the impact of a Housing First program on the use of specific health services, detoxification services, and criminal activity of long-term homeless individuals. The study sample consisted of eligible members of the inception cohort (18 enrollees) in the Single Adults Residential Assistance program (SARA) in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Analyses examined participant housing stability after enrollment in SARA and compared the use of a county medical center, detoxification programs, and criminal activity in the 2 years before and after enrollment in SARA. Only 1 of the 18 enrollees studied experienced homelessness during the 2-year follow-up after enrollment in SARA. There was a significant reduction in the amount of criminal activity in the 2-year period after SARA enrollment. The direction of association observed for other service uses remained consistent with expectations in existing literature, but were not statistically significant. Supportive housing for chronically homeless individuals may be successful at decreasing homelessness among this fragile population and may help reduce criminal activity.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a global problem. To better understand HCV infection researchers employ in vitro HCV cell-culture (HCVcc) systems that use Huh-7 derived hepatoma cells that are particularly permissive to HCV infection. A variety of hyper-permissive cells have been subcloned for this purpose. In addition, subclones of Huh-7 which have evolved resistance to HCV are available. However, the mechanisms of susceptibility or resistance to infection among these cells have not been fully determined. In order to elucidate mechanisms by which hepatoma cells are susceptible or resistant to HCV infection we performed genome-wide expression analyses of six Huh-7 derived cell cultures that have different levels of permissiveness to infection. A great number of genes, representing a wide spectrum of functions are differentially expressed between cells. To focus our investigation, we identify host proteins from HCV replicase complexes, perform gene expression analysis of three HCV infected cells and conduct a detailed analysis of differentially expressed host factors by integrating a variety of data sources. Our results demonstrate that changes relating to susceptibility to HCV infection in hepatoma cells are linked to the innate immune response, secreted signal peptides and host factors that have a role in virus entry and replication. This work identifies both known and novel host factors that may influence HCV infection. Our findings build upon current knowledge of the complex interplay between HCV and the host cell, which could aid development of new antiviral strategies.
