We report 885$\mu$m ALMA continuum flux densities for 24 Taurus members spanning the stellar/substellar boundary, with spectral types from M4 to M7.75. Of the 24 systems, 22 are detected at levels ranging from 1.0-55.6 mJy. The two non-detections are transition disks, though other transition disks in the sample are detected. Converting ALMA continuum measurements to masses using standard scaling laws and radiative transfer modeling yields dust mass estimates ranging from $\sim$0.3-20M$_{\oplus}$. The dust mass shows a declining trend with central object mass when combined with results from submillimeter surveys of more massive Taurus members. The substellar disks appear as part of a continuous sequence and not a distinct population. Compared to older Upper Sco members with similar masses across the substellar limit, the Taurus disks are brighter and more massive. Both Taurus and Upper Sco populations are consistent with an approximately linear relationship in $M_{dust}$ to $M_{star}$, although derived power-law slopes depend strongly upon choices of stellar evolutionary model and dust temperature relation. The median disk around early M-stars in Taurus contains a comparable amount of mass in small solids as the average amount of heavy elements in Kepler planetary systems on short-period orbits around M-dwarf stars, with an order of magnitude spread in disk dust mass about the median value. Assuming a gas:dust ratio of 100:1, only a small number of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs have a total disk mass amenable to giant planet formation, consistent with the low frequency of giant planets orbiting M-dwarfs., Comment: 41 pages and 32 figures, with all tables and appendices presented here in their entirety. The young star β Pictoris is well known for its dusty debris disk produced through collisional grinding of planetesimals, kilometre-sized bodies in orbit around the star. In addition to dust, small amounts of gas are also known to orbit the star; this gas is likely the result of vaporisation of violently colliding dust grains. The disk is seen edge on and from previous absorption spectroscopy we know that the gas is very rich in carbon relative to other elements. The oxygen content has been more difficult to assess, however, with early estimates finding very little oxygen in the gas at a C/O ratio that is 20× higher than the cosmic value. A C/O ratio that high is difficult to explain and would have far-reaching consequences for planet formation. Here we report on observations by the far-infrared space telescope Herschel, using PACS, of emission lines from ionised carbon and neutral oxygen. The detected emission from C+ is consistent withthat previously reported observed by the HIFI instrument on Herschel, while the emission from O is hard to explain without assuming a higher density region in the disk, perhaps in the shape of a clump or a dense torus required to sufficiently excite the O atoms. A possible scenario is that the C/O gas is produced by the same process responsible for the CO clump recently observed by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in the disk and that the redistribution of the gas takes longer than previously assumed. A more detailed estimate of the C/O ratio and the mass of O will have to await better constraints on the C/O gas spatial distribution.

We present a global study of low mass, young stellar object (YSO) surface densities in nearby (< 500 pc) star forming regions based on a comprehensive collection of Spitzer Space Telescope surveys. We show that the distribution of YSO surface densities in the solar neighbourhood is a smooth distribution, being adequately described by a lognormal function from a few to 10^3 YSOs per pc^2, with a peak at 22 stars/pc^2 and a dispersion of 0.85. We do not find evidence for multiple discrete modes of star-formation (e.g. clustered and distributed). Comparing the observed surface density distribution to previously reported surface density threshold definitions of clusters, we find that the fraction of stars in clusters is crucially dependent on the adopted definitions, ranging from 40 to 90%. However, we find that only a low fraction (< 26%) of stars are formed in dense environments where their formation/evolution (along with their circumstellar disks and/or planets) may be affected by the close proximity of their low-mass neighbours.

The first hydrostatic core (FHSC) represents a very early phase in the low-mass star formation process, after collapse of the parent core has begun but before a true protostar has formed. This large (few AU), cool (100 K), pressure supported core of molecular hydrogen is expected from theory, but has yet to be observationally verified. Here we present observations of an excellent candidate for the FHSC phase: Per-Bolo 58, a dense core in Perseus that was previously believed to be starless. The 70 micron flux of 65 mJy, from new deep Spitzer MIPS observations, is consistent with that expected for the FHSC. A low signal-to-noise detection at 24 micron leaves open the possibility that Per-Bolo 58 could be a very low luminosity protostar, however. We utilize radiative transfer models to determine the best-fitting FHSC and protostar models to the spectral energy distribution and 2.9 mm visibilities of Per-Bolo 58. The source is consistent with a FHSC with some source of lower opacity through the envelope allowing 24 micron emission to escape; a small outflow cavity or a cavity in the envelope are both possible. While we are unable to rule out the presence of a protostar, if present it would be one of the lowest luminosity protostellar objects yet observed, with an internal luminosity of approximately 0.01 Lsun., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. (Abridged) The c2d Spitzer Legacy project obtained images and photometry with both IRAC and MIPS instruments for five large, nearby molecular clouds. This paper combines information drawn from studies of individual clouds into a combined and updated statistical analysis of star formation rates and efficiencies, numbers and lifetimes for SED classes, and clustering properties. Current star formation efficiencies range from 3% to 6%. Taken together, the five clouds are producing about 260 solar masses of stars per Myr. The star formation surface density is more than an order of magnitude larger than would be predicted from the Kennicutt relation used in extragalactic studies. Measured against the dense gas probed by the maps of dust continuum emission, the efficiencies are much higher, and the current stock of dense cores would be exhausted in 1.8 Myr on average. The derived lifetime for the Class I phase is 0.44 to 0.54 Myr, considerably longer than some estimates. Similarly, the lifetime for the Class 0 SED class, 0.10 to 0.16 Myr, is longer than early estimates. The great majority (90%) of young stars lie within loose clusters with at least 35 members and a stellar density of 1 solar mass per cubic pc. Accretion at the sound speed from an isothermal sphere over the lifetime derived for the Class I phase could build a star of about 0.25 solar masses, given an efficiency of 0.3. Our data confirm and aggravate the "luminosity problem" for protostars. Our results strongly suggest that accretion is time variable, with prolonged periods of very low accretion. Based on a very simple model and this sample of sources, half the mass of a star would be accreted during only 7% of the Class I lifetime, as represented by the eight most luminous objects., 41 pages, 14 figures, ApJSupp, in press. We present observations of two areas totalling 0.57 deg^2 in the IC 5146 star-forming region at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, 24, and 70 μm observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We reexamine the issue of the distance to this cloud and conclude a value of 950 ± 80 pc is most likely. We compare source counts, colors, and magnitudes in our observed region to a subset of the SWIRE data that was processed through our pipeline. We identify more than 200 young stellar object (YSO) candidates from color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, many of which were previously unknown. We compare the colors of these YSOs to the models of Robitaille et al. and perform simple fits to the SED's to estimate properties of the circumstellar disks likely to surround the Class II and III sources. We also compare the mid-IR disk excesses to Hα emission-line data where available. We present a quantitative description of the degree of clustering, estimate the star formation efficiency, and discuss the fraction of YSOs in the region with disks relative to an estimate of the diskless YSO population. Finally, we compare the YSO distribution to the cold dust distribution mapped by SCUBA and briefly describe the diffuse emission likely due to PAHs associated with the H II region.

With the goal to study the physical and chemical evolution of ices in solar-mass systems, a spectral survey is conducted of a sample of 41 low luminosity YSOs using 3-38 um Spitzer and ground-based spectra. The long-known 6.0 and 6.85 um bands are detected toward all sources, with the Class 0-type YSOs showing the deepest bands ever observed. In almost all sources the 6.0 um band is deeper than expected from the bending mode of pure solid H2O. The depth and shape variations of the remaining 5-7 um absorption indicate that it consists of 5 independent components, which, by comparison to laboratory studies, must be from at least 8 different carriers. Simple species are responsible for much of the absorption in the 5-7 um region, at abundances of 1-30% for CH3OH, 3-8% for NH3, 1-5% for HCOOH, ~6% for H2CO, and ~0.3% for HCOO- with respect to solid H2O. The 6.85 um band likely consists of one or two carriers, of which one is less volatile than H2O because its abundance relative to H2O is enhanced at lower H2O/tau_9.7 ratios. It does not survive in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM), however. The similarity of the 6.85 um bands for YSOs and background stars indicates that its carrier(s) must be formed early in the molecular cloud evolution. If an NH4+ salt is the carrier its abundance with respect to solid H2O is typically 7%, and low temperature acid-base chemistry or cosmic ray induced reactions must have been involved in its formation. Possible origins are discussed for the carrier of an enigmatic, very broad absorption between 5 and 8 um. Finally, all the phenomena observed for ices toward massive YSOs are also observed toward low mass YSOs, indicating that processing of the ices by internal ultraviolet radiation fields is a minor factor in the early chemical evolution of the ices. We present maps of 14.4 deg^2 of the Ophiuchus dark clouds observed by the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS). These high quality maps depict both numerous point sources as well as extended dust emission within the star-forming and non-star-forming portions of these clouds. Using PSF-fitting photometry, we detect 5779 sources at 24 um and 81 sources at 70 um at the 10 sigma level of significance. Three hundred twenty-three candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) were identified according to their positions on the MIPS/2MASS K versus K$-$[24] color-magnitude diagrams as compared to 24 um detections in the SWIRE extragalactic survey. We find that more than half of the YSO candidates, and almost all the ones with protostellar Class I spectral energy distributions, are confined to the known cluster and aggregates., Comment: 55 pages; 22 figures; accepted by Astrophysical Journal

We report the discovery of a nearby, embedded cluster of young stellar objects, associated filamentary infrared dark cloud, and 4.5 micron shock emission knots from outflows detected in Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared imaging of the Serpens-Aquila Rift obtained as part of the Spitzer Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We also present radial velocity measurements of the region from molecular line observations obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) that suggest the cluster is co-moving with the Serpens Main embedded cluster 3 degrees to the north. We therefore assign it the same distance, 260 pc. The core of the new cluster, which we call Serpens South, is composed of an unusually large fraction of protostars (77%) at high mean surface density (>430 pc^-2) and short median nearest neighbor spacing (3700 AU). We present the results of ALMA band 7 observations of dust and CO gas in the disks around 7 objects with spectral types ranging between M5.5 and M7.5 in Upper Scorpius OB1, and one M3 star in Ophiuchus. We detect unresolved continuum emission in all but one source, and the $^{12}$CO J=3-2 line in two sources. We constrain the dust and gas content of these systems using a grid of models calculated with the radiative transfer code MCFOST, and find disk dust masses between 0.1 and 1 M$_\oplus$, suggesting that the stellar mass / disk mass correlation can be extrapolated for brown dwarfs with masses as low as 0.05 M$_\odot$. The one disk in Upper Sco in which we detect CO emission, 2MASS J15555600, is also the disk with warmest inner disk as traced by its H - [4.5] photometric color. Using our radiative transfer grid, we extend the correlation between stellar luminosity and mass-averaged disk dust temperature originally derived for stellar mass objects to the brown dwarf regime to $\langle T_{dust} \rangle \approx 22 (L_{*} /L_{\odot})^{0.16} K$, applicable to spectral types of M5 and later. This is slightly shallower than the relation for earlier spectral type objects and yields warmer low-mass disks. Observations from the Herschel Space Observatory have more than doubled the number of wide debris disks orbiting Sunlike stars to include over 30 systems with R > 100 AU. Here we present new Herschel PACS and re-analyzed Spitzer MIPS photometry of five Sunlike stars with wide debris disks, from Kuiper belt size to R > 150 AU. The disk surrounding HD 105211 is well resolved, with an angular extent of >14" along the major axis, and the disks of HD 33636, HD 50554, and HD 52265 are extended beyond the PACS PSF size (50% of energy enclosed within radius 4.23"). HD 105211 also has a 24-micron infrared excess that was previously overlooked because of a poorly constrained photospheric model. Archival Spitzer IRS observations indicate that the disks have small grains of minimum radius ~3 microns, though the minimum grain gradius is larger than the radiation pressure blowout size in all systems. We discuss the combined IRAC/MIPS c2d Spitzer Legacy observations of the Serpens star-forming region. We describe criteria for isolating bona fide YSOs from the extensive background of extragalactic objects. We then discuss the properties of the resulting high-confidence set of 235 YSOs. An additional 51 lower confidence YSOs outside this area are identified from the MIPS data and 2MASS photometry. We present color-color diagrams to compare our observed source properties with those of theoretical models for star/disk/envelope systems and our own modeling of the objects that are well represented by a stellar photosphere plus circumstellar disk. These objects exhibit a wide range of disk properties, from many with actively accreting disks to some with both passive disks and even possibly debris disks. The YSO luminosity function extends down to at least a few times 10^(-3) L_☉ or lower. The lower limit may be set more by our inability to distinguish YSOs from extragalactic sources than by the lack of YSOs at very low luminosities. We find no evidence for variability in the shorter IRAC bands between the two epochs of our data set, Δt ~ 6 hr. A spatial clustering analysis shows that the nominally less evolved YSOs are more highly clustered than the later stages. The background extragalactic population can be fitted by the same two-point correlation function as seen in other extragalactic studies. We present a table of matches between several previous infrared and X-ray studies of the Serpens YSO population and our Spitzer data set. The clusters in Serpens have a very high surface density of YSOs, primarily with SEDs suggesting extreme youth. The total number of YSOs, mostly Class II, is greater outside the clusters.

We present mid-infrared Spitzer IRAC and MIPS images of the UX Orionis star VV Ser and the surrounding cloud. The 5.6--70 micron images show bright, localized and nebulous emission extended over 4 arcmin centered on VV Ser. We interpret the nebulosity as being due to transiently heated grains excited by UV photons emitted by VV Ser. A companion paper describes how the physical structure of the VV Ser disk has been constrained using a wide range of observational data modeled by an axisymmetric Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. In this paper we employ the model to study the nebulosity surrounding VV Ser using quantum-heated PAH molecules and Very Small Grains (VSGs) consisting of amorphous carbon in the thermal cooling approximation. Imprinted on the nebulosity is a wedge-shaped dark band, centered on the star. We interpret this dark wedge as the shadow cast by the inner regions of a near-edge-on disk in UV light, allowing the PAHs to be excited only outside of this shadow. The presence of a disk shadow strongly constrains the inclination as well as the position angle of the disk. Although depending on the adopted PAH opacity, the abundance of PAHs in the surrounding cloud is constrained to 5+/-2% of the total dust mass, given the opacity. The extent of the nebulosity constrains the density of the gas surrounding the VV Ser disk to 500+/-200 cm-3 for a gas-to-dust ratio of 100. This low density suggests that the quantum heated material is not part of the original envelope of VV Ser and that it is rather a quiescent part of the Serpens molecular cloud that the star has passed into after being formed. In dense parts of interstellar clouds (> 10^5 cm^-3), dust & gas are expected to be in thermal equilibrium, being coupled via collisions. However, previous studies have shown that the temperatures of the dust & gas may remain decoupled even at higher densities. We study in detail the temperatures of dust & gas in the photon-dominated region S 140, especially around the deeply embedded infrared sources IRS 1-3 and at the ionization front. We derive the dust temperature and column density by combining Herschel PACS continuum observations with SOFIA observations at 37 $��$m and SCUBA at 450 $��$m. We model these observations using greybody fits and the DUSTY radiative transfer code. For the gas part we use RADEX to model the CO 1-0, CO 2-1, 13CO 1-0 and C18O 1-0 emission lines mapped with the IRAM-30m over a 4' field. Around IRS 1-3, we use HIFI observations of single-points and cuts in CO 9-8, 13CO 10-9 and C18O 9-8 to constrain the amount of warm gas, using the best fitting dust model derived with DUSTY as input to the non-local radiative transfer model RATRAN. We find that the gas temperature around the infrared sources varies between 35 and 55K and that the gas is systematically warmer than the dust by ~5-15K despite the high gas density. In addition we observe an increase of the gas temperature from 30-35K in the surrounding up to 40-45K towards the ionization front, most likely due to the UV radiation from the external star. Furthermore, detailed models of the temperature structure close to IRS 1 show that the gas is warmer and/or denser than what we model. Finally, modelling of the dust emission from the sub-mm peak SMM 1 constrains its luminosity to a few ~10^2 Lo. We conclude that the gas heating in the S 140 region is very efficient even at high densities, most likely due to the deep UV penetration from the embedded sources in a clumpy medium and/or oblique shocks., 15 pages, 23 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in A&A

We present maps of 0.89?deg2 of the Serpens dark cloud at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0??m observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Array Camera (IRAC). We discuss in detail the data processing carried out by the c2d team on IRAC data. More than 100,000 compact sources have been extracted, but we confine most of our discussion to the most reliable subset of these sources. This includes those that are detected above 7?? in all four IRAC bands or those detected in the two shorter IRAC bands together with 2MASS. We estimate completeness limits for our survey from Monte Carlo tests with artificial sources inserted into the Spitzer maps. We compare source counts, colors, and magnitudes in the Serpens cloud to two reference data sets, a 0.10 deg2 set of low-extinction regions near the dark cloud and a 1 deg2 subset of the SWIRE Elais N1 data that was processed through our pipeline. We find that it is possible to identify more than 200 young stellar object (YSO) candidates from color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, most of which were previously unknown. In addition to the dense area of new star formation known before in the core region (cluster A), we also find a moderately rich area to the south (cluster B). Our mapped area also includes the Herbig Ae star VV Ser, whose Spitzer images have been carefully modeled in a separate study. The extreme sensitivity of Spitzer IRAC allows us to search to very low luminosity limits for young substellar objects. The comparison of the Serpens region with the reference areas suggests that a population of infrared excess sources exists in Serpens at least down to luminosities of L ~ 10-3 L? and possibly lower.

We present maps of over 1.5 square degrees in Chamaeleon (Cha) II at 24, 70, and 160 micron observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) and a 1.2 square degree millimeter map from SIMBA on the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The c2d Spitzer Legacy Team's data reduction pipeline is described in detail. Over 1500 24 micron sources and 41 70 micron sources were detected by MIPS with fluxes greater than 10-sigma. More than 40 potential YSOs are identified with a MIPS and 2MASS color-color diagram and by their spectral indices, including two previously unknown sources with 24 micron excesses. Our new SIMBA millimeter map of Cha II shows that only a small fraction of the gas is in compact structures with high column densities. The extended emission seen by MIPS is compared with previous CO observations. Some selected interesting sources, including two detected at 1 mm, associated with Cha II are discussed in detail and their SEDs presented. The classification of these sources using MIPS data is found to be consistent with previous studies., Comment: 44 pages, 12 figures (1 color), to be published in ApJ

Sensitive 5-38 um Spitzer Space Telescope (SST) and ground based 3-5 um spectra of the embedded low mass protostars B5 IRS1 and HH46 IRS show deep ice absorption bands superposed on steeply rising mid-infrared continua. The ices likely originate in the circumstellar envelopes. The CO2 bending mode at 15 um is a particularly powerful tracer of the ice composition and processing history. Toward these protostars, this band shows little evidence for thermal processing at temperatures above 50 K. Signatures of lower temperature processing are present in the CO and OCN- bands, however. The observed CO2 profile indicates an intimate mixture with H2O, but not necessarily with CH3OH, in contrast to some high mass protostars. This is consistent with the low CH3OH abundance derived from the ground based L band spectra. The CO2/H2O column density ratios are high in both B5 IRS1 and HH46 IRS (~35%). High spatial resolution far-infrared (FIR) maps made on the Kuiper Airborne Observatory are presented of the extremely bright source associated with the "cometary" ultracompact H II region G34.3+0.2C. The maps show sharply peaked emission at G34.3+0.2C, surrounded by extended emission of uniform temperature. Maximum entropy method deconvolutions indicate FIR core source sizes of 12'' and 20'' at 47 and 95 μm, respectively. Radiative transfer models of centrally heated dust cloud cores are presented that match estimates of the FIR core emission at G34.3+0.2C. The FIR data and models imply that this emission is due to a compact, centrally peaked, massive core separate from the hot molecular core 2'' east of G34.3+0.2C. In comparison to the hot molecular core, the FIR core represents a separate, more evolved core that contains a group of high-mass stars and protostars.

We present SCUBA-2 450micron and 850micron observations of the Serpens MWC 297 region, part of the JCMT Gould Belt Survey of nearby star-forming regions. Simulations suggest that radiative feedback influences the star-formation process and we investigate observational evidence for this by constructing temperature maps. Maps are derived from the ratio of SCUBA-2 fluxes and a two component model of the JCMT beam for a fixed dust opacity spectral index of beta = 1.8. Within 40 of the B1.5Ve Herbig star MWC 297, the submillimetre fluxes are contaminated by free-free emission with a spectral index of 1.03+-0.02, consistent with an ultra-compact HII region and polar winds/jets. Contamination accounts for 73+-5 per cent and 82+-4 per cent of peak flux at 450micron and 850micron respectively. The residual thermal disk of the star is almost undetectable at these wavelengths. Young Stellar Objects are confirmed where SCUBA-2 850micron clumps identified by the fellwalker algorithm coincide with Spitzer Gould Belt Survey detections. We identify 23 objects and use Tbol to classify nine YSOs with masses 0.09 to 5.1 Msun. We find two Class 0, one Class 0/I, three Class I and three Class II sources. The mean temperature is 15+-2K for the nine YSOs and 32+-4K for the 14 starless clumps. We observe a starless clump with an abnormally high mean temperature of 46+-2K and conclude that it is radiatively heated by the star MWC 297. Jeans stability provides evidence that radiative heating by the star MWC 297 may be suppressing clump collapse., Comment: 24 pages, 13 figures, 7 tables

Far-infrared Herschel images of the is an element of Eridani system, seen at a fifth of the Sun's present age, resolve two belts of debris emission. Fits to the 160 mu m PACS image yield radial spans for these belts of 12-16 and 54-68 AU. The south end of the outer belt is approximate to 10% brighter than the north end in the PACS+SPIRE images at 160, 250, and 350 mu m, indicating a pericenter glow attributable to a planet "c" From this asymmetry and an upper bound on the offset of the belt center, this second planet should be mildly eccentric (e(c) approximate to 0.03-0.3). Compared to the asteroid and Kuiper Belts of the young Sun, the is an element of Eri belts are intermediate in brightness and more similar to each other, with up to 20 km sized collisional fragments in the inner belt totaling approximate to 5% of an Earth mass. This reservoir may feed the hot dust close to the star and could send many impactors through the Habitable Zone, especially if it is being perturbed by the suspected planet is an element of Eri b, at semi-major axis approximate to 3 AU.

We have observed twenty two galaxies at 100 microns with the Kuiper Airborne Observatory in order to determine the size of their FIR emitting regions. Most of these galaxies are luminous far-infrared sources, with L_FIR > 10^11 L_sun. This data constitutes the highest spatial resolution ever achieved on luminous galaxies in the far infrared. Our data includes direct measurements of the spatial structure of the sources, in which we look for departures from point source profiles. Additionally, comparison of our small beam 100 micron fluxes with the large beam IRAS fluxes shows how much flux falls beyond our detectors but within the IRAS beam. Several sources with point- like cores show evidence for such a net flux deficit. We clearly resolved six of these galaxies at 100 microns and have some evidence for extension in seven others. Those galaxies which we have resolved can have little of their 100 micron flux directly emitted by a point-like active galactic nucleus (AGN). Dust heated to ~40 K by recent bursts of non-nuclear star formation provides the best explanation for their extreme FIR luminosity. In a few cases, heating of an extended region by a compact central source is also a plausible option. Assuming the FIR emission we see is from dust, we also use the sizes we derive to find the dust temperatures and optical depths at 100 microns which we translate into an effective visual extinction through the galaxy. Our work shows that studies of the far infrared structure of luminous infrared galaxies is clearly within the capabilities of new generation far infrared instrumentation, such as SOFIA and SIRTF.

We report on the results of modeling of the dust cloud around Fomalhaut to fit the existing far-infrared and submillimeter data from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory (KAO), IRAS, and the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We assumed an optically and spatially thin disk with the following free parameters: inner and outer radii, power-law surface-density gradient, and a simple-grain model that characterized the emissivity as flat shortward of a transition wavelength and decreasing linearly with wavelength beyond that. We also explored two other parameterizations of the models to try to find parameters that were better defined by the existing data. We analyzed the results of the modeling with Bayesian methods for deriving the probabilities of the model parameters. We find that we can place significant constraints on the location of the dust but, contrary to previous suggestions, not its density gradient within the distribution. We confirm previous suggestions that the dust must have an emissivity dependence that does not decrease significantly with wavelength until longward of λ ~ 80 μm. The inclination of the dust disk is moderately well constrained close to the range previously suggested, θ = 65° ± 15°. Our models also reproduce well the total submillimeter flux with the simple assumption of a λ-1 emissivity law in the submillimeter region.

We report on high angular resolution observations of AFGL 2136 at 50 and 100 μm from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Our data consist of diffraction-limited scans in two orthogonal directions as well as photometry. The far-infrared (FIR) emission is very compact with an unresolved core and also exhibits low surface brightness wings that extend out to a radius of order 70'' at 100 μm. We have attempted to fit our observations and the photometry and size data at other wavelengths with simple, dust envelope models in order to place limits on the quantity and distribution of dust around AFGL 2136. Spherically symmetric models cannot fit the data, but we show that a simple approximation to a toroidal dust distribution can fit the energy distribution and size data rather well. The successful models imply a density gradient in the cloud of order ρ ∝ r-1.5 and optical depth at 100 μm of order unity.

We report on a variety of observations of SSV 13 in NGC 1333 in the far-infrared. We have obtained photometry of the object at a number of times between 1981 and 1995, spanning the time over which the object brightened by about 1 mag in the near-infrared. In addition, we report on diffraction-limited scanning at 47 and 95 μm. We find that the source has brightened by a factor of 1.5-2 in the far-infrared over the period of our observations, implying that the object has undergone a true luminosity increase since most of the luminosity of this object is emitted in the far-infrared. This also implies that the far-infrared emission is almost certainly associated with SSV 13, rather than the VLA source found recently about 7'' southwest of SSV 13. Our spatial observations and the overall energy distribution of SSV 13 can be modeled successfully with a spherically symmetric dust distribution with a dust optical depth of 0.3 at 100 μm and a density gradient of r-1.2±0.2.

We present observations of the Auriga-California Molecular Cloud (AMC) at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, 8.0, 24, 70 and 160 micron observed with the IRAC and MIPS detectors as part of the Spitzer Gould Belt Legacy Survey. The total mapped areas are 2.5 sq-deg with IRAC and 10.47 sq-deg with MIPS. This giant molecular cloud is one of two in the nearby Gould Belt of star-forming regions, the other being the Orion A Molecular Cloud (OMC). We compare source counts, colors and magnitudes in our observed region to a subset of the SWIRE data that was processed through our pipeline. Using color-magnitude and color-color diagrams, we find evidence for a substantial population of 166 young stellar objects (YSOs) in the cloud, many of which were previously unknown. Most of this population is concentrated around the LkHalpha 101 cluster and the filament extending from it. We present a quantitative description of the degree of clustering and discuss the fraction of YSOs in the region with disks relative to an estimate of the diskless YSO population. The Auriga-California Molecular Cloud (AMC) is one of two nearby (within 500 pc) giant molecular clouds, the other being the Orion A Molecular Cloud (OMC). We aim to study the properties of circumstellar disks in the AMC to compare the planet formation potential and processes within the AMC to those for other clouds. A first look with measurements from Spitzer observations suggests that AMC disk properties, such as the distribution of disk luminosities and the evolution of the mid-IR excesses, are not vastly different from those in other regions. New near-infrared images of the young, nebulous, intermediate-mass (Herbig Ae/Be) star LkHα 198 using direct imaging, adaptive-optics compensated speckle imaging, and standard speckle imaging reveal complex structure in its circumstellar dust distribution. At high resolution, LkHα 198 is found to possess a barlike feature which extends ~3'' from the star in either direction. Geometrical considerations suggest that the bar is unlikely to represent light scattered by either a standard circumstellar disk, a disequilibrium "pseudodisk," or an ambient halo illuminated by starlight escaping along the polar axis of a disk. Its orientation suggests that it may be associated with the fan-shaped nebula that surrounds LkHα 198. The infrared companion 6'' north of the star is found to be significantly extended at near-infrared wavelengths and may be an example of a deeply embedded object with an envelope that is at least partially illuminated from the outside.

Nine Herbig Ae/Be stars have been observed at λ = 2.7 mm with the IRAM and BIMA interferometers in order to place constraints on the presence of disk material around these objects. Only one Herbig Ae/Be star, Elias 3-1, was detected with certainty; two additional stars, MWC 137 and V645 Cyg, were possibly detected. The remaining six Herbig Ae/Be stars were not detected. Two deeply embedded objects near the target stars, LkHα 198-MM and V1318 Cyg S, were also detected. The emission from Elias 3-1 and V1318 Cyg S is unresolved, while that from LkHα 198 MM is resolved. Two stars (Elias 3-1 and V645 Cyg) were observed with the VLA at λ = 7 mm, 1.3 cm, and 3.6 cm. Based on our VLA data and those of Skinner, Brown, & Stewart, it appears that emission from ionized gas may contribute substantially to the millimeter emission from several sources. After correcting for this component where necessary, the remaining emission from most of the sample, attributed to dust, is considerably less than that predicted by assuming that the shorter wavelength emission arises in a disk. Much of the submillimeter and millimeter emission toward most of these stars must therefore arise in an extended envelope. For Elias 3-1, the data are consistent with a disk with mass around 0.1 M☉. We place limits on the masses of disks around the other stars.

We present results of observations at 47 and 95 microns from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory of several ``Vega-like'' stars. Spatial cuts and aperture photometry are presented for Beta Pictoris, Fomalhaut, and HD 135344, 139614, 142527, and 169142, four stars that had been suggested to possibly represent more distant examples of the Vega phenomenon by Walker and Wolstencroft. We have modelled the dust around beta Pic and Fomalhaut with a spatially and optically thin disk to determine the constraints our new observations place on the properites of the dust disks that are required to explain the infrared and optical properties of these two stars. For beta Pic we find that models similar to those proposed by Backman, Gillett, and Witteborn can fit our data quite well. For Fomalhaut we find that very different models are required which have much ``blacker'' dust with a much shallower density distribution, surface density proportional to r^{-0.5}$, than for beta Pic. Our observations of the four HD stars are consistent with their being spatially unresolved. Motivated by the long-standing "luminosity problem" in low-mass star formation whereby protostars are underluminous compared to theoretical expectations, we identify 230 protostars in 18 molecular clouds observed by two Spitzer Space Telescope Legacy surveys of nearby star-forming regions. We compile complete spectral energy distributions, calculate Lbol for each source, and study the protostellar luminosity distribution. This distribution extends over three orders of magnitude, from 0.01 Lsun - 69 Lsun, and has a mean and median of 4.3 Lsun and 1.3 Lsun, respectively. The distributions are very similar for Class 0 and Class I sources except for an excess of low luminosity (Lbol < 0.5 Lsun) Class I sources compared to Class 0. 100 out of the 230 protostars (43%) lack any available data in the far-infrared and submillimeter (70 um < wavelength < 850 um) and have Lbol underestimated by factors of 2.5 on average, and up to factors of 8-10 in extreme cases. Correcting these underestimates for each source individually once additional data becomes available will likely increase both the mean and median of the sample by 35% - 40%. We discuss and compare our results to several recent theoretical studies of protostellar luminosities and show that our new results do not invalidate the conclusions of any of these studies. As these studies demonstrate that there is more than one plausible accretion scenario that can match observations, future attention is clearly needed. We report the complete photometric results from our Herschel study which is the first comprehensive program to search for far-infrared emission from cold dust around young brown dwarfs. We surveyed 50 fields containing 51 known or suspected brown dwarfs and very low mass stars that have evidence of circumstellar disks based on Spitzer photometry and/or spectroscopy. The objects with known spectral types range from M3 to M9.5. Four of the candidates were subsequently identified as extragalactic objects. Of the remaining 47 we have successfully detected 36 at 70micron and 14 at 160micron with S/N greater than 3, as well as several additional possible detections with low S/N. The objects exhibit a range of [24]--[70] micron colors suggesting a range in mass and/or structure of the outer disk. We present modeling of the spectral energy distributions of the sample and discuss trends visible in the data. Using two Monte Carlo radiative transfer codes we investigate disk masses and geometry. We find a very wide range in modeled total disk masses from less than 1e-6 solar masses up to 1e-3 solar masses with a median disk mass of order 3e-5 solar masses, suggesting that the median ratio of disk mass to central object mass may be lower than for T Tauri stars. The disk scale heights and flaring angles, however, cover a range consistent with those seen around T Tauri stars. The host clouds in which the young brown dwarfs and low-mass stars are located span a range in estimated age from ~1-3 Myr to ~10 Myr and represent a variety of star-forming environments. No obvious dependence on cloud location or age is seen in the disk properties, though the statistical significance of this conclusion is not strong.

As part of the "Dust, Ice, and Gas In Time (DIGIT)" Herschel Open Time Key Program, we present Herschel photometry (at 70, 160, 250, 350 and 500 micron) of 31 Weak-Line T Tauri star (WTTS) candidates in order to investigate the evolutionary status of their circumstellar disks. Thirteen stars in our sample had circumstellar disks previously known from infrared observations at shorter wavelengths, while eighteen of them had no previous evidence for a disk. We detect a total of 15 disks as all previously known disks are detected at one or more Herschel wavelengths and two additional disks are identified for the first time. The spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of our targets seem to trace the dissipation of the primordial disk and the transition to the debris disk regime. Seven of the 15 disks appear to be optically thick primordial disks, including two objects with SEDs indistinguishable from those of typical Classical T Tauri stars, four objects that have significant deficit of excess emission at all IR wavelengths, and one "pre-transitional" object with a known gap in the disk. Despite their previous WTTS classification, we find that the seven targets in our sample with optically thick disks show evidence for accretion. The remaining eight disks have weaker IR excesses similar to those of optically thin debris disks. Six of them are warm and show significant 24 micron Spitzer excesses, while the last two are newly identified cold debris-like disks with photospheric 24 micron fluxes, but significant excess emission at longer wavelengths. The Herschel photometry also places strong constraints on the non-detections, where systems with F70/F70,star > 5 - 15 and L,disk/L,star > 1xE-3 to 1xE-4 can be ruled out. Astronomy and Astrophysics 540 (2012): A125 reproduced with permission from Astronomy & Astrophysics, Context. Fomalhaut is a young (2 ± 1 × 108 years), nearby (7.7 pc), 2 M ʘ star that is suspected to harbor an infant planetary system, interspersed with one or more belts of dusty debris. Aims. We present far-infrared images obtained with the Herschel Space Observatory with an angular resolution between 5.7__ and 36.7__ at wavelengths between 70 μm and 500 μm. The images show the main debris belt in great detail. Even at high spatial resolution, the belt appears smooth. The region in between the belt and the central star is not devoid of material; thermal emission is observed here as well. Also at the location of the star, excess emission is detected. We aim to construct a consistent image of the Fomalhaut system. Methods. We use a dynamical model together with radiative-transfer tools to derive the parameters of the debris disk. We include detailed models of the interaction of the dust grains with radiation, for both the radiation pressure and the temperature determination. Comparing these models to the spatially resolved temperature information contained in the images allows us to place strong constraints on the presence of grains that will be blown out of the system by radiation pressure. We use this to derive the dynamical parameters of the system. Results. The appearance of the belt points toward a remarkably active system in which dust grains are produced at a very high rate by a collisional cascade in a narrow region filled with dynamically excited planetesimals. Dust particles with sizes below the blow-out size are abundantly present. The equivalent of 2000 one-km-sized comets are destroyed every day, out of a cometary reservoir amounting to 110 Earth masses. From comparison of their scattering and thermal properties, we find evidence that the dust grains are fluffy aggregates, which indicates a cometary origin. The excess emission at the location of the star may be produced by hot dust with a range of temperatures, but may also be due to gaseous free-free emission from a stellar wind, Acknowledgements. We describe results from a program of speckle interferometry with two-dimensional infrared array detectors. Analysis of observations of eta Carinae made with 58 x 62 InSb detector are discussed. The data have been analyzed with both the Labeyrie autocorrelation, a deconvolution of shift-and-add data, and a phase restoration process. Development of a new camera based on a much lower noise HgCdTe detector will lead to a significant improvement i limiting magnitude for IR speckle interferometry.

We describe the capabilities and status of the SOFIA project, a 2.5-m airborne observatory for observations from visible to sub-millimeter wavelengths. Properties of likely instrumentation and the expected science results are also summarized along with a description of the expected operating plan for the observatory and status of technology drivers.

We present Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC and MIPS observations of a 0.85 deg^2 field including the Corona Australis (CrA) star-forming region. At a distance of 130 pc, CrA is one of the closest regions known to be actively forming stars, particularly within its embedded association, the Coronet. Using the Spitzer data, we identify 51 young stellar objects (YSOs) in CrA which include sources in the well-studied Coronet cluster as well as distributed throughout the molecular cloud. Twelve of the YSOs discussed are new candidates, one of which is located in the Coronet. Known YSOs retrieved from the literature are also added to the list, and a total of 116 candidate YSOs in CrA are compiled. Based on these YSO candidates, the star formation rate is computed to be 12 M_o Myr^-1, similar to that of the Lupus clouds. A clustering analysis was also performed, finding that the main cluster core, consisting of 68 members, is elongated (having an aspect ratio of 2.36), with a circular radius of 0.59 pc and mean surface density of 150 pc^-2. In addition, we analyze outflows and jets in CrA by means of new CO and H_2 data. We present 1.3 mm interferometric continuum observations made with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) covering R CrA, IRS 5, IRS 7, and IRAS 18595-3712 (IRAS 32). We also present multi-epoch H_2 maps and detect jets and outflows, study their proper motions, and identify exciting sources. The Spitzer and ISAAC/VLT observations of IRAS 32 show a bipolar precessing jet, which drives a CO (2-1) outflow detected in the SMA observations. There is also clear evidence for a parsec-scale precessing outflow, E-W oriented, and originating in the SMA 2 region, likely driven by SMA 2 or IRS 7A., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 112 pages, 42 figures (quality reduced), 13 tables. We report initial results from a {\it Herschel} program to search for far-infrared emission from cold dust around a statistically significant sample of young brown dwarfs. The first three objects in our survey are all detected at 70\micron, and we report the first detection of a brown dwarf at 160\micron. The flux densities are consistent with the presence of substantial amounts of cold dust in the outer disks around these objects. We modeled the SED's with two different radiative transfer codes. We find that a broad range of model parameters provides a reasonable fit to the SED's, but that the addition of our 70\micron, and especially the 160\micron\ detection enables strong lower limits to be placed on the disk masses since most of the mass is in the outer disk. We find likely disk masses in the range of a few $\times 10^{-6}$ to $10^{-4}$ \msun. Our models provide a good fit to the SED's and do not require dust settling.
