The advanced radiographic capability (ARC) laser system, part of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is a short-pulse laser capability integrated into the NIF. The ARC is designed to provide adjustable pulse lengths of ∼ 1 − 38 p s in four independent beamlets, each with energies up to 1 kJ (depending on pulse duration). A detailed model of the ARC lasers has been developed that predicts the time- and space-resolved focal spots on target for each shot. Measurements made to characterize static and dynamic wavefront characteristics of the ARC are important inputs to the code. Modeling has been validated with measurements of the time-integrated focal spot at the target chamber center (TCC) at low power, and the space-integrated pulse duration at high power, using currently available diagnostics. These simulations indicate that each of the four ARC beamlets achieves a peak intensity on target of up to a few 10 18 W / c m 2 .

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory contains a 192-beam 4.2 MJ neodymium glass laser (around 1053 nm or 1w) that is frequency converted to 351nm light or 3w. It has been designed to support the study of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) and High Energy Density Physics (HEDP). The NIF Precision Diagnostic System (PDS) was reactivated and new diagnostic packages were designed and fielded that offer a more comprehensive suite of high-resolution measurements. The current NIF laser performance will be presented as well as the preliminary results obtained with the various laser experimental campaigns using the new diagnostic tool suites.

Achieving a high conversion efficiency into relativistic electrons is central to short-pulse laser application and fundamentally relies on creating interaction regions with intensities ${\gg}10^{18}$~W/cm$^2$. Small focal length optics are typically employed to achieve this goal; however, this solution is impractical for large kJ-class systems that are constrained by facility geometry, debris concerns, and component costs. We fielded target-mounted compound parabolic concentrators to overcome these limitations and achieved nearly an order of magnitude increase to the conversion efficiency and more than tripled electron temperature compared to flat targets. Particle-in-cell simulations demonstrate that plasma confinement within the cone and formation of turbulent laser fields that develop from cone wall reflections are responsible for the improved laser-to-target coupling. {These passive target components can be used to improve the coupling efficiency for all high-intensity short-pulse laser applications, particularly at large facilities with long focal length optics., 6 pages, 5 figures

Max-of-N fluence is the maximum peak fluence at a given location over N number of shots and is important for calculating fluence dependence for intrinsic laser-induced optic damage. Previously, we observed the Max-of-N effect on the National Ignition Facility and developed an ad-hoc model to calculate its effect. In this work, we attempt to understand the fundamental mechanism that causes this Max-of-N effect. We conclude that the primary fundamental mechanism responsible for this effect is dominated by the combination of fluence variations and pointing jitter of the laser. This discovery both strengthens our model for predicting optics longevity and gives us insight into how to mitigate this effect.

The implosion efficiency in inertial confinement fusion depends on the degree of stagnated fuel compression, density uniformity, sphericity, and minimum residual kinetic energy achieved. Compton scattering-mediated 50-200 keV x-ray radiographs of indirect-drive cryogenic implosions at the National Ignition Facility capture the dynamic evolution of the fuel as it goes through peak compression, revealing low-mode 3D nonuniformities and thicker fuel with lower peak density than simulated. By differencing two radiographs taken at different times during the same implosion, we also measure the residual kinetic energy not transferred to the hot spot and quantify its impact on the implosion performance.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser produces 192 pulsed beams with transverse dimensions ∼40 cm × 40 cm and a diversity of temporal shapes with typical durations ranging from 1 to 30 ns and a total energy on target up to 2.1 MJ in the UV.1 Standard diagnostics include near-field cameras that record the spatial dependence of the time-integrated pulse fluence, as well as sensors that record the spatially integrated pulse power versus time. While these diagnostics are indispensable, beamlines and the pulses they transport may be better characterized with a diagnostic that reveals more of the spatio-temporal pulse structure, i.e., the local irradiance, especially in the presence of nonlinear optical effects. Recently, the time-resolving capability of the Icarus camera has been leveraged in the Precision Diagnostic System (PDS) at the NIF. The Icarus is a gated CMOS sensor designed to capture X-ray images in various experimental settings.2, 3 However, its sensitivity in the near-IR is sufficient for capturing time-gated images of NIF beams, thus opening the door to better characterization than is possible with standard space- and/or time-integrated diagnostics. In this work, we present the first time-gated beam profiles measured in PDS at the NIF during high-energy and high-peak-power experiments, and discuss their implications in terms of past, present, and future laser performance.

The Precision Diagnostic System (PDS) is an advanced set of laser diagnostic tools installed within the National Ignition Facility (NIF). It is capable of picking off a single, full aperture, 1053nm (1ω) beamline before the beam propagates to the target chamber and directing it to a suite of precision laser diagnostics. It was instrumental in validating the performance of the final optics 3Ω frequency conversion system design when NIF was built. The PDS has recently been recommissioned after more than a decade of non-use and enhanced to better understand laser performance limitations1 and to characterize underperforming beams. In addition to recommissioning existing diagnostics for calorimetry, power, wavefront, near-field and far-field imaging, new diagnostics have been added: two types of time-resolved near field imaging systems; higher resolution wavefront imaging; and a 1ω spectrometer. Additionally, the beam transport system was upgraded to allow PDS to select among four different 1ω beamlines to enable improved understanding of beam-to-beam variations. Two of these four beams are top-hemisphere beams, while two are bottom-hemisphere, with known performance variations. The results from NIF Shots with the new and recommissioned PDS diagnostic (spatial resolution, dynamic range, time gating, etc..) will be reviewed and data up to 14 kJ, 3.2 TW will be presented.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF), located at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is the world’s largest and highest-energy laser system. NIF’s 192 intense laser beams can deliver more energy than any previous laser system with a design point of 1.8 MJ of UV and 500 TW peak power. Efforts are currently underway to better understand the NIF performance and its limitations. One goal of recent and future campaigns is to better understand the accumulation of Bintegral within the NIF laser using existing diagnostics, as well as the Precision Diagnostic System (PDS). Among these diagnostics, the Shack-Hartmann (SH) sensor in the Output Sensor Package (OSP), a standard NIF diagnostic, and the dedicated PDS Radial Shearing Interferometer (RSI) both measure the wavefront of the beam. Using these diagnostics in concert with the NIF Programmable Spatial Shaper (PSS), which is used to tailor arbitrary spatial beam profiles, we have performed integrated experiments to study the B-Integral induced wavefront through the entire NIF main laser. We propagated a probe beam with a slowly varying spatial intensity profile through the NIF laser to produce a spatially varying B-Integral induced wavefront at the laser output, from which we obtained the magnitude of the B-Integral of the system. We present these direct measurements of the spatially resolved B-Integral induced wavefront scaled for the first time from a table-top experiment to a fusion-class laser chain. These measurements are compared to results of current simulations using Virtual Beamline (VBL) software.

There are 830 transport mirrors with a combined surface area of approximately 255 m2 of precision multilayer coatings deposited on 50 metric tons of BK7 glass in the high fluence transport section of the National Ignition Facility (NIF). With peak fluences over 20 J/cm2 at 1053 nm, less than five percent of these mirrors are exchanged annually due to laser damage since full system operations began in 2009. Multiple technologies have been implemented to achieve these low exchange rates. The coatings are complex dichroics designed to reflect the fundamental wavelength (1053 nm) and an alignment beam (374 nm) while suppressing target backscatter wavelengths (351 nm and 400-700 nm) from backward propagation up the beamlines. Each optic is off-line laser conditioned to nominally 50% over the average fluence and nominally 90% of the peak fluence allowing the final laser conditioning to occur on-line during NIF operations. Although the transport section of NIF is sealed in a clean argon environment, air knives were installed on upward facing transport mirrors to blow off particulates that could accumulate and initiate laser damage. Beam dumps were installed in between the final optics assembly and the final transport mirrors to capture ghost reflections from the anti-reflection coated surfaces on the transmissive optics used for polarization rotation, frequency conversion, and focusing the 192 laser beams on target. Spot blockers, normally used for the final optics, are sometimes used to project a shadow over transport mirror laser damage in an effort to arrest laser damage growth and extend transport mirror lifetime. Post analysis of laser-damaged mirrors indicates that the dominant causes of laser damage are from surface particulates and the 351-nm wavelength target backscatter.

Measured pointing jitter from NIF is used to simulate the effect of Max-of-N accumulated fluence distribution. The simulate result was able to reproduce the measured Max-of-N effect for different energy and wavelength operations.

Large laser systems that deliver optical pulses with peak powers exceeding one Petawatt (PW) have been constructed at dozens of research facilities worldwide and have fostered research in High-Energy-Density (HED) Science, High-Field and nonlinear physics [1]. Furthermore, the high intensities exceeding 1018W/cm2 allow for efficiently driving secondary sources that inherit some of the properties of the laser pulse, e.g. pulse duration, spatial and/or divergence characteristics. In the intervening decades since that first PW laser, single-shot proof-of-principle experiments have been successful in demonstrating new high-intensity laser-matter interactions and subsequent secondary particle and photon sources. These secondary sources include generation and acceleration of charged-particle (electron, proton, ion) and neutron beams, and x-ray and gamma-ray sources, generation of radioisotopes for positron emission tomography (PET), targeted cancer therapy, medical imaging, and the transmutation of radioactive waste [2, 3]. Each of these promising applications requires lasers with peak power of hundreds of terawatt (TW) to petawatt (PW) and with average power of tens to hundreds of kW to achieve the required secondary source flux.

We have demonstrated the world's highest average power, fully diode-pumped, petawatt-class peak power laser, the High-repetition-rate Advanced Petawatt Laser System (HAPLS) [1-3]. These first commissioning results at 16J (stretched) at 3%Hz fully validate projected performance of 30J/30fs (>1PW) at 10Hz. The laser has been operated at this intermediate level at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to demonstrate integrated performance of all subsystems and provide benchmarking data to laser performance models before further increasing energy and peak power. Data was obtained during multiple campaigns, exceeding several hours of run time, and a snapshot of 60min of data is shown in Fig. 1. The average pump laser 1ω (1053nm) energy was 97J with an rms stability of 0.7%, 2ω (527nm) energy at the Ti:sapphire power amplifier was 62J, and the average stretched short pulse energy was 16J. A full-aperture diagnostic suite allows simultaneous, single-shot measurement of energy, spectrum, beam quality, and pulse duration at full repetition rate. Single-shot SPIDER retrieved pulse shapes (Fig. 1 inset) with an average pulse duration over 12000 consecutive shots of 28.6fs (rms=1.4fs). The mean pulse duration is consistent with the measured spectral bandwidth and is ∼1.2× the transform limit. All results shown are raw data without filtering or averaging, demonstrating the exceptional pulse characteristics, repeatability, and stability of the entire laser system.

This talk will provide an overview of high power laser research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). It will discuss the status of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser. In addition, the talk will describe other laser development activities such as the development of high average power lasers and novel fiber lasers. The National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been in service since 2007 and operating with > 1 MJ energies since 2009. During this time the facility has transitioned to become an international user facility and increased the shot rate from ~150 target shots per year to greater than 400 shots per year. Today, the NIF plays an essential role in the US Stockpile Stewardship Program, providing data under the extreme conditions needed to validate computer models and train the next generation of stockpile stewards. Recent upgrades include the Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC), a high energy short pulse laser used to do high resolution radiography. In addition to the NIF, this talk will include an overview of progress on the high average power laser development, recent results from fiber laser development activities and improvements to laser design and computational capabilities.

The HAPLS laser system has been commissioned to its first integrated performance milestone, delivering laser pulses with 16J sub-30fs duration at a 3⅓Hz repetition rate. This first all-diode-pumped petawatt-class laser offers the average powers required for secondary source applications.

Localized infrared (IR) laser heating of fused silica optics has proven highly effective in reducing or removing surface flaws, which tend to limit performance in high power laser systems. Here, we present both simulation and experimental results to examine the use of IR laser light to polish, anneal, and micro-shape fused silica surfaces used in high power laser systems. We show how the resulting material response can be tuned by considering the temperature-dependent optical constants of the material and choosing the appropriate laser parameter set. For example, non-evaporative laser polishing of glass surfaces to heal crack networks is shown most effective when using mid-IR lasers, which lead to laser energy coupling up to ≈1 mm in depth. In contrast, long-wave IR light tuned to the Restrahlen frequency of the material is shown to evaporate material most efficiently with penetration depths of

We report on the design, performance, and qualification of the injection laser system designed to deliver joule-level chirped pulse beamlets arranged in dual rectangular beam formats into two main laser amplifier beamlines of the National Ignition Facility. The system is designed to meet the requirements of the Advanced Radiographic Capability upgrade with features that deliver performance, adjustability, and long-term reliability.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, is the first of its kind megajoule-class laser facility with 192 beams capable of delivering over 1.8 MJ and 500TW of 351 nm light for high accuracy laser-matter interaction experiments. It has been commissioned and operated since 2009 to support a wide range of missions including the study of inertial confinement fusion, high energy density physics, material science, and laboratory astrophysics. In the first section of this paper we discuss the current status of laser performance obtained during the 408 target experiments completed in 2017. The performance spanned a wide range of laser energies, powers and pulse durations as requested for these target experiments. A special emphasis is given on energy delivery and cone power accuracy in the UV, as these are key parameters for successful experiments. In the second section of the paper, the results obtained during the 2017 performance quad campaign are briefly described. During this campaign a series of laser-only shots were taken to perform tests at elevated energies on a single NIF quad. These tests were designed to assess laser performance limits and operational costs against predictive models. This campaign culminated with the delivery of ~54 kJ of UV on a single quad of NIF, and 14 kJ on a single beam aperture, which are both to our knowledge the largest energies achieved to date for a neodymium-glass, frequency tripled architecture.

Ignition Set to Go One aim of the National Ignition Facility is to implode a capsule containing a deuterium-tritium fuel mix and initiate a fusion reaction. With 192 intense laser beams focused into a centimeter-scale cavity, a major challenge has been to create a symmetric implosion and the necessary temperatures within the cavity for ignition to be realized (see the Perspective by Norreys ). Glenzer et al. (p. 1228 , published online 28 January) now show that these conditions can be met, paving the way for the next step of igniting a fuel-filled capsule. Furthermore, Li et al. (p. 1231 , published online 28 January) show how charged particles can be used to characterize and measure the conditions within the imploding capsule. The high energies and temperature realized can also be used to model astrophysical and other extreme energy processes in a laboratory settings.

We investigate the optical damage performance of multi-layer dielectric (MLD) coatings suitable for use in high energy, large-aperture petawatt-class lasers. We employ small-area damage test methodologies to evaluate the damage resistance of various coatings as a function of deposition methods and coating materials under simulated use conditions. In addition, we demonstrate that damage initiation by raster scanning at lower fluences and growth threshold testing are required to estimate large-aperture optics’ performance.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory is the first of a kind megajoule-class laser with 192 beams capable of delivering over 1.8 MJ and 500TW of 351nm light [1], [2]. In order to advance our understanding, and enable short-pulse multi-frame radiographic experiments of dense cores of cold material, the generation of very hard x-rays above 50 keV is necessary. X-rays with such characteristics can be efficiently generated with high intensity laser pulses above 1017 W/cm² [3]. The Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) [4] which is currently being commissioned on the NIF will provide eight, 1 ps to 50 ps, adjustable pulses with up to 1.7 kJ each to create x-ray point sources enabling dynamic, multi-frame x-ray backlighting. This paper will provide an overview of the ARC system and report on the laser performance tests conducted with a stretched-pulse up to the main laser output and their comparison with the results of our laser propagation codes.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser has been designed to support high energy density science (HEDS), including the demonstration of fusion ignition through Inertial Confinement. NIF operated a single ''quad'' of 4 beams from December 2002 through October 2004 in order to gain laser operations experience, support target experiments, and demonstrate laser performance consistent with NIF's design requirement. During this two-year period, over 400 Main Laser shots were delivered at 1{omega} to calorimeters for diagnostic calibration purposes, at 3{omega} to the Target Chamber, and at 1{omega}, 2{omega}, and 3{omega} to the Precision Diagnostics System (PDS). The PDS includes its own independent single beam transport system, NIF design frequency conversion hardware and optics, and laser sampling optics that deliver light to a broad range of laser diagnostics. Highlights of NIF laser performance will be discussed including the results of high energy 2{omega} and 3{omega} experiments, the use of multiple focal spot beam conditioning techniques, the reproducibility of laser performance on multiple shots, the generation on a single beam of a 3{omega} temporally shaped ignition pulse at full energy and power, and recent results on full bundle (8 beamline) performance. NIF's first quad laser performance meets or exceeds NIF's design requirements.

Deposition of maximum laser energy into a small, high-Z enclosure in a short laser pulse creates a hot environment. Such targets were recently included in an experimental campaign using the first four of the 192 beams of the National Ignition Facility [J. A. Paisner, E. M. Campbell, and W. J. Hogan, Fusion Technology 26, 755 (1994)], under construction at the University of California Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. These targets demonstrate good laser coupling, reaching a radiation temperature of 340 eV. In addition, the Raman backscatter spectrum contains features consistent with Brillouin backscatter of Raman forward scatter [A. B. Langdon and D. E. Hinkel, Physical Review Letters 89, 015003 (2002)]. Also, NIF Early Light diagnostics indicate that 20% of the direct backscatter from these reduced-scale targets is in the polarization orthogonal to that of the incident light.

An experimental campaign to maximize radiation drive in small-scale hohlraums has been carried out at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at the Lawerence Livermore National Laboratory (Livermore, CA, USA) and at the OMEGA laser at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (Rochester, NY, USA). The small-scale hohlraums, laser energy, laser pulse, and diagnostics were similar at both facilities but the geometries were very different. The NIF experiments used on-axis laser beams whereas the OMEGA experiments used 19 beams in three beam cones. In the cases when the lasers coupled well and produced similar radiation drive, images of x-ray bumthrough and laser deposition indicate the pattern of plasma filling is very different.

The first experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have employed the first four beams to measure propagation and laser backscattering losses in large ignition-size plasmas. Gas-filled targets between 2 and 7 mm length have been heated from one side by overlapping the focal spots of the four beams from one quad operated at 351 nm (3ω) with a total intensity of 2 × 1015 W cm−2. The targets were filled with 1 atm of CO2 producing up to 7 mm long homogeneously heated plasmas with densities of ne = 6 × 1020 cm−3 and temperatures of Te = 2 keV. The high energy in an NIF quad of beams of 16 kJ, illuminating the target from one direction, creates unique conditions for the study of laser–plasma interactions at scale lengths not previously accessible. The propagation through the large-scale plasma was measured with a gated x-ray imager that was filtered for 3.5 keV x-rays. These data indicate that the beams interact with the full length of this ignition-scale plasma during the last ~1 ns of the experiment. During that time, the full aperture measurements of the stimulated Brillouin scattering and stimulated Raman scattering show scattering into the four focusing lenses of 3% for the smallest length (~2 mm), increasing to 10–12% for ~7 mm. These results demonstrate the NIF experimental capabilities and further provide a benchmark for three-dimensional modelling of the laser–plasma interactions at ignition-size scale lengths.

The Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) laser system at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is designed to ultimately provide eight beamlets with a pulse duration adjustable from 1 to 30 ps, and energies up to 1.5 kJ per beamlet. Currently, four beamlets have been commissioned. In the first set of 6 commissioning target experiments, the individual beamlets were fired onto gold foil targets with energy up to 1 kJ per beamlet at 20–30 ps pulse length. The x-ray energy distribution and pulse duration were measured, yielding energy conversion efficiencies of 4–9 × 10−4 for x-rays with energies greater than 70 keV. With greater than 3 J of such x-rays, ARC provides a high-precision x-ray backlighting capability for upcoming inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics experiments on NIF.

Modeling the lifetime of a fused silica optic is described for a multiple beam, MJ-class laser system. This entails combining optic processing data along with laser shot data to account for complete history of optic processing and shot exposure. Integrating with online inspection data allows for the construction of a performance metric to describe how an optic performs with respect to the model. This methodology helps to validate the damage model as well as allows strategic planning and identifying potential hidden parameters that are affecting the optic's performance.

Comprehensive modeling of laser-induced damage in optics for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) has been performed on fused silica wedge focus lenses with a metric that compares the modeled damage performance to online inspections. The results indicate that damage models are successful in tracking the performance of the fused silica final optics when properly accounting for various optical finishes and mitigation processes. This validates the consistency of the damage models and allows us to further monitor and evaluate different system parameters that potentially can affect optics performance.

The National Ignition Facility has recently achieved the milestone of delivering over 1.8 MJ and 500 TW of 351 nm laser energy and power on target, which required average fluences up to 9 J/cm2 (3 ns equivalent) in the final optics system. Commercial fused silica laser-grade UV optics typically have a maximum operating threshold of 5 J/cm2. We have developed an optics recycling process which enables NIF to operate above the laser damage initiation and growth thresholds. We previously reported a method to mitigate laser damage with laser ablation of the damage site to leave benign cone shaped pits. We have since developed a production facility with four mitigation systems capable of performing the mitigation protocols on full-sized (430 mm) optics in volume production. We have successfully repaired over 700 NIF optics (unique serial numbers), some of which have been recycled as many as 11 times. We describe the mitigation systems, the optics recycle loop process, and optics recycle production data.

Time resolved hard x-ray images (hv > 9 keV) and time integrated hard x-ray spectra (hv = 18-150 keV from vacuum hohlraums irradiated with four 351 nm wavelength NIF laser beams are presented as a function of hohlraum size and laser power and duration. The hard x-ray images and spectra provide insight into the time evolution of the hohlraum plasma filling and the production of hot electrons. The fraction of laser energy detected as hot electrons (f hot ) shows correlation with both laser intensity and with an analytic plasma filling model.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) is the world’s most energetic laser, having demonstrated in excess of 1.9MJ @351nm with Inertial Confinement Fusion pulse-shapes in July, 2012. First commissioned with 192 operational beamlines in March, 2009, NIF has since transitioned to routine operation for stockpile stewardship, inertial confinement fusion research, and basic high energy density science.

We have achieved the NIF design goals for power and energy by delivering 1.86 MJ of ultra-violet energy in a wide dynamic range (>300:1), 22.5-ns shaped ignition pulse with a peak power of 520 TW.

The Beamlet laser is a single-aperture prototype for the National Ignition Facility (NIF). We have recently installed and activated a 55 m{sup 3} vacuum vessel and associated diagnostic package at the output of the Beamlet that we are using to characterize target plane irradiance at high power. Measurements obtained both with and without a kinoform diffractive optic are reported. Dependences on critical laser parameters including output power, spatial filtering, and wavefront correction are discussed and compared with simulations.

The laser driver for the National Ignition Facility will be a departure from previous inertial confinement fusion laser architecture of a master oscillator single pass power amplifier (MOPA) design. The laser will use multi-segment Nd:Glass amplifiers in a multipass cavity arrangement, which can be assembled into compact and cost effective arrays to deliver the required multi- megajoule energy to target. A single beam physics prototype, the Beamlet, has been in operation for over two years and has demonstrated the feasibility of this architecture. We present a short review of Beamlet`s performance and limitations based on beam quality both at its fundamental and frequency converted wavelengths of 1.053 and 0.351 {mu}m.

The Nova and Beamlet lasers were used to simulate the beam propagation conditions that will be encountered during the National Ignition Facility operation. Perturbation theory predicts that there is a 5mm scale length propagation mode that experiences large nonlinear power growth. This mode was observed in the tests. Further tests have confirmed that this mode can be suppressed with improved spatial filtering.

We describe a damage testing system and its use in investigating laser-induced optical damage initiated by both intrinsic and extrinsic precursors on multilayer dielectric coatings suitable for use in high-energy, large-aperture petawatt-class lasers. We employ small-area damage test methodologies to evaluate the intrinsic damage resistance of various coatings as a function of deposition methods and coating materials under simulated use conditions. In addition, we demonstrate that damage initiation by raster scanning at lower fluences and growth threshold testing are required to probe the density of extrinsic defects, which will limit large-aperture optics performance.

We are studying the implementation of polar direct drive (PDD) ignition experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser system. Part of this preparation involves testing the performance of the NIF laser system over a broader span of center wavelengths, 3.6 nm, where the laser currently operates and that gain models describe. The temporal shape for the PDD pulses consists of a drive pulse preceded by three lower power "picket pulses". These picket pulses require a multi-FM sinusoidal phase modulation format with a bandwidth of ~ 200 GHz and a more dispersive grating in the preamplifier module (PAM) for smoothing-by-spectral-dispersion (SSD). In this paper we discuss recent measurements of gain on the NIF laser system over this broader wavelength range. We measured FM-to-AM conversion over the 3.6 nm wavelength range. The possibility of pinhole closure due to the larger bandwidth and dispersion associated with multi-FM SSD was studied at LLE on the OMEGA EP laser.

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has been operational since March 2009 and has been transitioning to a user facility supporting ignition science, high energy density science (HEDS), national security applications, and fundamental science. The facility has achieved its design goal of 1.8 MJ and 500 TW of 3ω light on target, and has performed target experiments with 1.9 MJ at peak powers of 410 TW. The facility is on track to perform over 200 target shots this year in support of all of its user communities. The facility has nearly 60 diagnostic systems operational and has shown flexibility in laser pulse shape and performance to meet the requirements of its multiple users. Progress continues on its goal of demonstrating thermonuclear burn in the laboratory. It has performed over 40 indirect-drive experiments with cryogenic-layered capsules. New platforms are being developed for HEDS and fundamental science. Equation-of-state and material strength experiments have been done on a number of materials with pressures of over 50 MBars obtained in diamond, conditions never previously encountered in the laboratory and similar to those found in planetary interiors. Experiments are also in progress investigating radiation transport, hydrodynamic instabilities, and direct drive implosions. NIF continues to develop as an experimental facility. Advanced Radiographic Capability (ARC) is now being installed on NIF for producing high-energy radiographs of the imploded cores of ignition targets and for short pulse laser-plasma interaction experiments. One NIF beam is planned for conversion to two picosecond beams in 2014. Other new diagnostics such as x-ray Thomson scattering, low energy neutron spectrometer, and multi-layer reflecting x-ray optics are also planned. Incremental improvements in laser performance such as improved optics damage performance, beam balance, and back reflection control are being pursued.

The National Ignition Facility has been used to compress deuterium-tritium to an average areal density of ~1.0±0.1 g cm(-2), which is 67% of the ignition requirement. These conditions were obtained using 192 laser beams with total energy of 1-1.6 MJ and peak power up to 420 TW to create a hohlraum drive with a shaped power profile, peaking at a soft x-ray radiation temperature of 275-300 eV. This pulse delivered a series of shocks that compressed a capsule containing cryogenic deuterium-tritium to a radius of 25-35 μm. Neutron images of the implosion were used to estimate a fuel density of 500-800 g cm(-3).

Noncritically phase-matched (NCPM) fourth harmonic generation (FHG) of Nd:glass laser radiation in partially deuterated dihydrogen phosphate (KD*P) crystals has been demonstrated. At an Nd:glass laser wavelength of 1053.0 nm, NCPM FHG is achieved in 70% deuterated KD*P at a crystal temperature of 18.5±0.1 °C. Tuning the fundamental laser wavelength from 1052.9 to 1053.2 nm, FHG in KD*P is NCPM by changing the crystal temperature from 17.9 °C to 20.5 °C. When driven with 2.4 J of second harmonic radiation in a 3 ns flat-top pulse, corresponding to 1 GW/cm(2) 2ω drive intensity, 1.9 J of fourth harmonic radiation was generated in a 6 mm long KD*P crystal, yielding a second to fourth harmonic energy conversion efficiency of 79%.

We demonstrate the hohlraum radiation temperature and symmetry required for ignition-scale inertial confinement fusion capsule implosions. Cryogenic gas-filled hohlraums with 2.2 mm-diameter capsules are heated with unprecedented laser energies of 1.2 MJ delivered by 192 ultraviolet laser beams on the National Ignition Facility. Laser backscatter measurements show that these hohlraums absorb 87% to 91% of the incident laser power resulting in peak radiation temperatures of T(RAD)=300 eV and a symmetric implosion to a 100 μm diameter hot core.
