Abstract: © 2014 The Authors. Nests are structures built to support and protect eggs and/or offspring from predators, parasites, and adverse weather conditions. Nests are mainly constructed prior to egg laying, meaning that parent birds must make decisions about nest site choice and nest building behavior before the start of egg-laying. Parent birds should be selected to choose nest sites and to build optimally sized nests, yet our current understanding of clutch size-nest size relationships is limited to small-scale studies performed over short time periods. Here, we quantified the relationship between clutch size and nest size, using an exhaustive database of 116 slope estimates based on 17,472 nests of 21 species of hole and non-hole-nesting birds. There was a significant, positive relationship between clutch size and the base area of the nest box or the nest, and this relationship did not differ significantly between open nesting and hole-nesting species. The slope of the relationship showed significant intraspecific and interspecific heterogeneity among four species of secondary hole-nesting species, but also among all 116 slope estimates. The estimated relationship between clutch size and nest box base area in study sites with more than a single size of nest box was not significantly different from the relationship using studies with only a single size of nest box. The slope of the relationship between clutch size and nest base area in different species of birds was significantly negatively related to minimum base area, and less so to maximum base area in a given study. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that bird species have a general reaction norm reflecting the relationship between nest size and clutch size. Further, they suggest that scientists may influence the clutch size decisions of hole-nesting birds through the provisioning of nest boxes of varying sizes.

Abstract: Marie Vaugoyeau [et al.], The increase in size of human populations in urban and agricultural areas has resulted in considerable habitat conversion globally. Such anthropogenic areas have specific environmental characteristics, which influence the physiology, life history, and population dynamics of plants and animals. For example, the date of bud burst is advanced in urban compared to nearby natural areas. In some birds, breeding success is determined by synchrony between timing of breeding and peak food abundance. Pertinently, caterpillars are an important food source for the nestlings of many bird species, and their abundance is influenced by environmental factors such as temperature and date of bud burst. Higher temperatures and advanced date of bud burst in urban areas could advance peak caterpillar abundance and thus affect breeding phenology of birds. In order to test whether laying date advance and clutch sizes decrease with the intensity of urbanization, we analyzed the timing of breeding and clutch size in relation to intensity of urbanization as a measure of human impact in 199 nest box plots across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East (i.e., the Western Palearctic) for four species of hole-nesters: blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus), great tits (Parus major), collared flycatchers (Ficedula albicollis), and pied flycatchers (Ficedula hypoleuca). Meanwhile, we estimated the intensity of urbanization as the density of buildings surrounding study plots measured on orthophotographs. For the four study species, the intensity of urbanization was not correlated with laying date. Clutch size in blue and great tits does not seem affected by the intensity of urbanization, while in collared and pied flycatchers it decreased with increasing intensity of urbanization. This is the first large-scale study showing a species-specific major correlation between intensity of urbanization and the ecology of breeding. The underlying mechanisms for the relationships between life history and urbanization remain to be determined. Abstract: Møller, A.P. [et al.], Secondary hole-nesting birds that do not construct nest holes themselves and hence regularly breed in nest boxes constitute important model systems for field studies in many biological disciplines with hundreds of scientists and amateurs involved. Those research groups are spread over wide geographic areas that experience considerable variation in environmental conditions, and researchers provide nest boxes of varying designs that may inadvertently introduce spatial and temporal variation in reproductive parameters. We quantified the relationship between mean clutch size and nest box size and material after controlling for a range of environmental variables in four of the most widely used model species in the Western Palaearctic: great tit Parus major, blue tit Cyanistes caeruleus, pied flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca and collared flycatcher F. albicollis from 365 populations and 79 610 clutches. Nest floor area and nest box material varied non-randomly across latitudes and longitudes, showing that scientists did not adopt a random box design. Clutch size increased with nest floor area in great tits, but not in blue tits and flycatchers. Clutch size of blue tits was larger in wooden than in concrete nest boxes. These findings demonstrate that the size of nest boxes and material used to construct nest boxes can differentially affect clutch size in different species. The findings also suggest that the nest box design may affect not only focal species, but also indirectly other species through the effects of nest box design on productivity and therefore potentially population density and hence interspecific competition. © 2014 The Authors. Abstract: Rice cultivation has frequently been suggested to provide an important wetland habitat for waterbirds. However, in contrast to most other regions of the Mediterranean, the Camargue still has a substantial amount of surface area of natural marshes. Thus, we compared the abundance, species richness, and community composition of waterbirds in ricefields and natural marshes of the Camargue, during a one-year study. Based on surveys conducted at 4–7 day intervals in 1997–1998, our results suggest that natural marshes had substantially greater abundance of waterbirds, with ca. 99% of the individuals having been observed in natural marshes. Estimates of species richness and associated parameters further indicated that ricefields were clearly less rich than natural marshes. Although our results were rather striking for the Camargue, they may not be applicable to other regions because of the relatively high availability of natural marshes and differences in management of ricefields.

Abstract: Modern agriculture contributed to the decline of many bird species through habitat degradation or habitat loss during the second half of the 20th century in western Europe. Areas where traditional agriculture has been maintained still allow many species to breed and survive, some of them now being considered as greatly threatened. The Lesser Grey Shrike (Lanius minor) is among the most threatened breeding bird species in western Europe. In France, a relict population of 50–60 pairs still breeds at two sites in the Mediterranean area where, each year, the species spends the three months necessary to conduct its breeding cycle (this shrike is a long-distance migrant overwintering in southern Africa). The pairs nest in tall trees, isolated or in rows and, more importantly, depend on vineyards associated with grassy fallows. In one of these two sites west of Montpellier (Mediterranean France; 43°36′N, 3°53′E), a study of the land use around the nests showed the predominance of vineyards (range: 37.3 %–79.8 %) followed by fallows (10.8 %–48.2 %), and small orchards and gardens (0.5 %–7.5 %). What seems essential is that vineyards and fallows occur in a mosaic arrangement of small plots. Birds take their prey in both habitats but mostly in fallows. To secure the conservation of this shrike and other species sharing the same breeding habitats, efforts should be made to maintain the mosaic land use system prevailing in that wine-growing area.

Abstract: A low breeding success (36.5%) due primarily to nest predation by mammals, birds and reptiles has been found in the Woodchat Shrike Lanius senator at three study sites in Mediterranean France. Data collected for 3 years on natural and artificial nests showed no year, time, season or spatial effect on nest predation rate in this species. No particular spatial breeding strategy is used, breeding success being no better at any nest site currently used along roadsides or far from roads. With respect to nest predation pressures, the best breeding strategy for Woodchat Shrike should be to breed as early as possible at any suitable site within its territory. Nevertheless, the impact of high predation on the viability of the studied populations of this species cannot be fully explained by the large impact of habitat transformations (closure of open, bushy grasslands) on current day populations.

Abstract: Breeding habitats in Mediterranean France consist in open, dry grasslands with a low and discontinuous grass layer and scattered bushes and trees. The choice of nest supports was largely opportunistic, the most abundant suitable nest support type (bush or tree) and the most abundant species being present at each study site have been used. About 75% of the nests were placed at heights between 1 and 3 m. Laying period lasted from 9 May until 6 July (peak of first clutches: 21–30 May). Mean clutch size was 5.14±0.82 eggs (n=114). Breeding success was independent from the site, the height and the concealment of nests. Mean survival rate of nests from laying to fledgling was 0.365. The main cause of low breeding success was high nest predation exerted by a rich guild of predators. The species is mainly threatened through dramatic habitat shrinkage due to pastoralism reduction leading to closures of lightly bushed grasslands in Mediterranean France.

Abstract: Correlations between warmth sum and egg laying in tits (Paridae) were often found but do not prove that there is a direct influence of temperature on egg laying date. Such correlations are also open to criticism because they involve a statistical bias (i. e. the selection of variables). Studies of a Blue Tit population in two close but different habitats in Mediterranean France showed that it is better, at least, to consider a time period with a physiological signification (1 January–10 April). We found that the higher the mean temperature in this time period, the earlier the egg laying commenced. Egg laying dates of the Blue Tit in the two habitats are primarily attributed to habitat-related feeding resources.

Abstract: Summary. — Ornithological report 2001-2006 for the Camargue. – The present ornithological report for the Camargue covers six years (2001-2006). This time-period has been marked by an accelerated global warming (the summer 2003 was particularly extreme). Owing to a constant high observation pressure, 18 new species have been recorded and many rare species have been resighted in that region (Camargue, Crau, Alpilles). Among the species or group of species which are regularly censused, the number of breeding Greater Flamingos Phoenicopterus roseus and that of wintering ducks and coots did not show any significant change. The colonial herons have continued either to increase or to fluctuate at a high level. For example, the Great White Egret Casmerodius albus has definitely settled in the delta and the Squacco Heron Ardeola ralloides has reached a new peak of 505 pairs in 2006. More efficient prospection efforts gave more precise breeding numbers for two species of solitary herons, the Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris and the Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus. New breeding species such as the Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo, White Stork Ciconia ciconia, Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia and Greylag Anser anser increased their numbers as well as the Glossy Ibis Plegadis falcinellus of which 14 pairs has bred in 2006 and the Purple Swamphen Porphyrio porphyrio which was found for the first time breeding in 2006. The breeding species showing the most serious concern are actually the breeding gulls and terns whose figures have dramatically decreased. Without human management, this situation will even become worse in a near future. Further remarkable observations were the first case of wintering Lesser Spotted Eagle Aquila pomarina in 2001/ 2002, a mixed pair of Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni x Collared Pratincole G. pratincola in 2001, the settling of the Rook Corvus frugilegus in Arles., Résumé. — Ce calendrier ornithologique couvre les six années de 2001 à 2006, une période marquée par un phénomène de réchauffement général accéléré du climat en général et par la canicule de l’été 2003 en particulier. Compte tenu de la pression d’observation élevée, 18 nouvelles espèces ont été signalées et de nombreuses espèces rares ont été revues dans la région (Camargue, Crau, Alpilles). Parmi les espèces ou groupes d’espèces qui font l’objet de recensements réguliers, les effectifs nicheurs de Flamant rose Phoenicopterus roseus de même que ceux des Anatidés et des Foulques hivernants n’appellent pas de commentaires particuliers pour ce laps de temps. Les Ardéidés coloniaux continuent soit de progresser pour certains, soit de fluctuer dans des limites qui restent élevées pour d’autres. Par exemple, la Grande Aigrette Casmerodius albus s’est installée durablement dans le delta, le Crabier chevelu Ardeola ralloides a atteint un nouveau maximum avec 505 couples en 2006. Des effectifs plus précis sont fournis pour deux espèces comme le Butoir étoilé Botaurus stellaris et le Blongios nain Ixobrychus minutus grâce à des prospections plus efficaces. Des espèces nicheuses d’installation récente comme le Grand Cormoran Phalacrocorax carbo, la Cigogne blanche Ciconia ciconia, la Spatule blanche Platalea leucorodia et l’Oie cendrée Anser anser continuent de progresser de même que l’Ibis falcinelle Plegadis falcinellus dont 14 couples se sont reproduits en 2006 et la Talève sultane Porphyrio porphyrio dont la reproduction a enfin été confirmée en 2006. Parmi les espèces posant un problème grave, il faut relever les laro-limicoles nicheurs dont les effectifs se sont effondrés. Sans intervention urgente de gestion, leur situation risque d’empirer. Abstract: By comparison with deciduous oaks, the lower yearly production of new leaves in sclerophyllous oaks is hypothesized to have several consequences on animal communities. In particular, the production of arthropod communities that feed upon the leaves should be lower in sclerophyllous than in deciduous oaks, this causing changes in breeding patterns and the demographic balance in insectivorous birds. Studies in both deciduous and sclerophyllous habitats in southern France have shown that: 1) the spring development of new leaves occurs later and more slowly in sclerophyllous than in deciduous oaks, 2) the biomass of caterpillars is much lower in sclerophyllous oak forests, and 3) there is a large variation in life history traits of the Blue Tit depending in which type of habitat they breed. Laying date occurs later and clutch size is lower in sclerophyllous habitats than in deciduous habitats. The evolution of life history traits is discussed according to whether poor sclerophyllous habitats are isolated (e.g. on Corsica) or are parts of landscapes including both habitat types.

Abstract: In Europe and the Mediterranean Basin, where the natural environment has been dramatically altered by man, many species have vanished or became endangered whereas others have been able to expand their breeding range. This chapter deals only with a sample of some expanding species, most of them concern westward oriented expansions but also some northward expansions by Mediterranean and desertic species. Each of these range expansions reflects more a combination of several factors than the influence of a single factor. Species able to live in mostly open and eutrophic habitats shaped by man and/or in close contact with man seem to be favoured. Thus, the evergrowing impact of human activities now plays a significant role in recent bird invasions.

At the edge of their breeding limits species often show reduced fecundity, usually interpreted as the result of harsher environmental constraints (Slagsvold 1981, Jarvinen 1986). The first habitat is dominated by evergreen Holm Oaks (Quercus ilex), the second by deciduous Downy Oaks (Quercus pubescens). The vegetation of the former habitat reflects the climatic constraints of the mediterranean zone where evergreen plants are widespread and dominant, whereas the latter habitat is more representative of temperate European habitats. The peak of food availability in spring occurs later, is smaller and lasts longer in the evergreen oak habitat than in the deciduous habitat (Cramm 1982, Isenmann et al. 1987, Clamens 1988). Blue Tits in the evergreen habitat actually lay fewer eggs per clutch and start to breed later than those in the deciduous habitat. In this paper, we analyse the differences in clutch size and breeding success between and within years as a clue of the explanations previously suggested to account for the between habitat differences in Blue Tit reproductive biology (Blondel et al. 1987, Clamens and Isenmann 1989).

Abstract: Blue tits breeding in an evergreen Holm Oak forest in Southern Spain have the earliest breeding period recorded for the species in Europe and northern Africa. Their clutch sizes fall within the ranges known for the Mediterranean Evergreen Oak belt. The populations of Corsica, where breeding starts two months later, and those of Andalusia, illustrate the wide seasonal variations of the breeding season of this species in the Mediterranean zone. Such a variation is probably due to differences in food availability and climatic constraints between different areas. Lower values of food availability obviously do not allow the production of large clutch sizes., Les Mésanges bleues se reproduisant dans une forêt de Chênes verts d’Andalousie dans le sud de l’Espagne ont la période de reproduction la plus précoce notée en Europe et même en Afrique du Nord (les dates moyennes de ponte du premier œuf ont oscillé entre le 16 et le 28 mars pendant 3 ans). La taille de ponte moyenne (7,9 œufs), par contre, se place dans les limites de variation observées pour ce paramètre dans d’autres formations sempervirentes méditerranéennes. Les populations de Corse (où les Mésanges bleues se reproduisent en moyenne 2 mois plus tard) et d’Andalousie montrent les extraordinaires limites de variation de la période de reproduction de cette espèce en zone méditerranéenne. Abstract: The gulls and terns (Laridae) together with the herons (Ardeidae) and flamingos (Phoenicopteridae) undoubtedly take pride of place amongst the aquatic bird species breeding in the Camargue (southern France). Most species of Laridae colonize small islands in the lagoons of the southern part of the Rhone delta. About two-thirds of this area have for many years now been integrated into two extensive salines (Salin de Giraud, Salin d’Aigues-Mortes). As a group this community exploits diverse feeding habitats in this region; the sea, salt-pans, brackish lagoons, fresh-water marshes, agricultural land and even refuse tips (Leveque 1957, Isenmann 1979, Blondel & Isenmann 1981). Eight species presently breed, four belonging to the genus Larus and four to the genus Sterna (this paper ignores the Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida an irregular breeder in fresh-water marshes). The first more or less complete survey was made in 1937 by Lomont (1938) and the first complete census in 1956 (Leveque, 1957). Since then complete censuses have been carried out by the Station Biologique de la Tour du Valat every three years in collaboration with the C.N.R.S. (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique), the “Reserve Nationale de Camargue” and the “Parc Ornithologique du Pont de Gau” (Blondel 1964, Johnson & Isenmann 1971, Blondel & Isenmann 1981, Hafner et al. 1980, 1985). This paper is based on the results of the ten censuses carried out between 1956 and 1985.

20. Observations sur la mouette pygmée (Larus Minutus) en Camargue de 1971 à 1974

Abstract: The status of the Little Gull Larus minutiis in the Camargue was studied from February 1971 to October 1974, on a monthly basis. Adult birds are seen regularly and frequently during the spring migration, in flocks of up to 1560 birds. During the summer, only a few subadults were seen ; all were moulting their head feathers. There is no large scale autumn migration, the few birds seen being first year birds. Only a small number of adults and juveniles are seen in winter time. Most of the Little Gulls (85 %) passing through the Camargue in spring feed upon Artemia salina in the salt-pans., Cette étude traite des observations de Mouettes pygmées faites entre le 1er février 1971 et le 10 octobre 1974, en Camargue. Le passage pré-nuptial est seul important et concerne un nombre élevé d’oiseaux surtout adultes (jusqu’à 1 560 individus observés ensemble). Quelques immatures (de l’ordre de la vingtaine) estivent et muent. Le passage post-nuptial ne concerne que quelques juvéniles (au maximum 17 individus observés ensemble). Des individus adultes et immatures pour la plupart isolés sont observés en «hiver» . Ce sont essentiellement les bassins d’évaporation des salines de Salin-de-Giraud qui attirent les Mouettes pygmées (environ 85 % des effectifs). Elles s’y nourrissent d’Artemia salina. Le statut hivernal de l’espèce est discuté. L’absence de l’espèce au passage post-nuptial est expliqué par une migration en boucle., Isenmann Paul. 21. Contribution à l’étude de la biologie de la reproduction et de l’écologie du goéland argenté à pieds jaunes (Larus argentatus michahellis) en Camargue

Abstract: The breeding population of Yellow-legged Herring Gull (Larus argentatus michahellis) on the French Mediterrannean coast is estimated to be 8,500-10,000 pairs. In the Camargue, breeding colonies are located on flat islands covered with glassworts (Salicornia) and grasses. Whereas colonies may be occupied as early as November, breeding activities take place from the end of March to mid-July. Indications are given on nest size, distance between nests, laying date, size and weight of eggs, incubation and nestling periods. Chicks are fed mostly on fish (taken from the wakes of trawlers), waste from rubbish tips, vertebrates (migrant birds mainly) and terrestrial invertebrates. The feeding places of adults are very diverse. Rubbish dumps are most often visited, offshore trawling areas ranking second. Lagoons and cultivated areas are more seldom visited, and always temporarily. A review of food items and favorite feeding places all over the species range indicates that the Yellow-legged Herring Gull is an opportunistic bird, taking advantage of any type of food provided by human activities. This explains the spectacular increase of the species along the french mediterrannean coast., La population de Goélands argentés à pieds jaunes nichant sur le littoral méditerranéen français est actuellement de l’ordre de 8 500 à 10 000 couples. En Camargue, les colonies se trouvent dans des lagunes, sur des îlots recouverts de salicornes et de graminées. Les oiseaux réoccupent leur colonie dès novembre. Les indications suivantes concernant la biologie de la reproduction sont données : dimensions des nids, distance entre les nids, dates de ponte, tailles et poids frais des œufs, durées de l’incubation et éclosions, durées de l’élevage et dates de l’émancipation des poussins ainsi que la nourriture apportée aux poussins. L’habitat d’alimentation de ce goéland en Camargue est diversifié : les décharges publiques jouent certainement le rôle le plus important avec les chalutiers. Les lagunes et les terres agricoles ont une importance plus faible du fait de leur caractère saisonnier. Le recueil des proies et des milieux fréquentés dans d’autres parties de son aire de répartition montre qu’il est opportuniste puisqu’il est aussi bien à l’aise en mer, sur les lagunes, dans les steppes et dans un milieu aussi artificiel que la décharge d’ordures ménagères. En l’état actuel, cette espèce ne pose aucun problème sérieux pour les autres espèces de Laro-limicoles, les canards ou les flamants tant que son effectif restera contrôlé en Camargue., Isenmann Paul. 22. Évolution de la structure des peuplements de Laro-limicoles nicheurs

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to provide information on the composition of the breeding population of waders and gulls in the Camargue (Southern France). It also gives details on the changes in status of these species between 1937 and 1970. The profound changes the Camargue has undergone (embankments of the lagoons, invasion of ricefields, various other agricul¬ tural developments, increase in the number of rubbish dumps just outside the area) have had a great effect on these populations : 1) three new species have become established as breeding birds. 2) most species have shown no noticeable changes in status, except the Black-headed Gull and the Yellow-legged Herring Gull which have increased strikingly ; these two species have been able to take advantage of the possibilities provided by changes in the ecosystem. 3) the diversity (measured with the Shannon & Weaver diversity index) has first increased then decreased when the numbers of Yellow-legged Herring Gulls and Black-headed Gulls reached a given high level. 4) on the contrary, the dominance (measured with the Mc Naughton & W oi.f dominance index has first decreased and then increased. This indicates that the Camargue ecosystem has become «harsh». The predominance of the Black-headed Gull and the Yellow-legged Herring Gull is due essentially to the widening of their ecological niches, but they have not displaced any other species., Blondel Jacques,Isenmann Paul.
