On February 28, 2021, a fireball dropped ∼0.6 kg of recovered CM2 carbonaceous chondrite meteorites in South-West England near the town of Winchcombe. We reconstruct the fireball's atmospheric trajectory, light curve, fragmentation behavior, and pre-atmospheric orbit from optical records contributed by five networks. The progenitor meteoroid was three orders of magnitude less massive (∼13 kg) than any previously observed carbonaceous fall. The Winchcombe meteorite survived entry because it was exposed to a very low peak atmospheric dynamic pressure (∼0.6 MPa) due to a fortuitous combination of entry parameters, notably low velocity (13.9 km s−1). A near-catastrophic fragmentation at ∼0.07 MPa points to the body's fragility. Low entry speeds which cause low peak dynamic pressures are likely necessary conditions for a small carbonaceous meteoroid to survive atmospheric entry, strongly constraining the radiant direction to the general antapex direction. Orbital integrations show that the meteoroid was injected into the near-Earth region ∼0.08 Myr ago and it never had a perihelion distance smaller than ∼0.7 AU, while other CM2 meteorites with known orbits approached the Sun closer (∼0.5 AU) and were heated to at least 100 K higher temperatures.

Widely held assumptions about static societies during the early-middle Holocene (c. 10,000–3300 BP) in the Willaumez Peninsula, Papua New Guinea are challenged by a hypothetical reconstruction of social negotiations that we propose were embedded within the manufacture of large obsidian stemmed tools that circulated as cultural valuables. Made by skilled knappers, these artefacts were manufactured in stages (quarrying, preform production, shaping, hafting, and re-hafting) often segregated in discrete and possibly restricted locations. The successful completion of a large obsidian stemmed tool may have required effective management to negotiate multiple social networks, thereby enhancing the status of those who directed the process. Social connections forged and re-inforced to support the production process may also have been enhanced by ritual practices. Through the social links created and strengthened by the process of its crafting and the subsequent ceremonies and exchanges in which it circulated, a stemmed tool contributed to a vibrant social life that persisted over several millennia.

This paper outlines a project involving the construction of a corpus-based list which provides a large-scale selection of multi-word units that occur in academic English. Using the most up-to-date, reliable methods, the goal was to produce a large-scale resource which could either be studied directly or used as a reference for practitioners to create further resources. The paper details the procedures used to generate this academic multi-word unit list, explains why specific decisions were made to identify useful items, and discusses the resulting resource. Comparisons will be made between the list created and currently existing lists, and also between the characteristics of the list created versus characteristics of high-frequency general English word lists. Finally, applications of this free resource for English practitioners and students will be suggested.

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) results in over 100 000 hospital attendances per year in the UK alone and is a leading cause for the post-marketing withdrawal of new drugs, leading to significant financial losses. MicroRNA-122 (miR-122) has been proposed as a sensitive DILI marker although no commercial applications are available yet. Extracellular blood microRNAs (miRNAs) are promising clinical biomarkers but their measurement at point of care remains time-consuming, technically challenging, and expensive. For circulating miRNA to have an impact on healthcare, a key challenge to overcome is the development of rapid and reliable low-cost sample preparation. There is an acknowledged issue with miRNA stability in the presence of hemolysis and platelet activation, and no solution has been demonstrated for fast and robust extraction at the site of blood draw. Here, we report a novel microfluidic platform for the extraction of circulating miR-122 from blood enabled by a vertical approach and gravity-based bubble mixing. The performance of this disposable cartridge was verified by standard quantitative polymerase chain reaction analysis on extracted miR-122. The cartridge performed equivalently or better than standard bench extraction kits. The extraction cartridge was combined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to detect miR-122 as an initial proof-of-concept toward an application in point-of-care detection. This platform enables the standardization of sample preparation and the detection of miRNAs at the point of blood draw and in resource limited settings and could aid the introduction of miRNA-based assays into routine clinical practice.

This study explored participation by Japanese university English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Computer Assisted Language Learning/Mobile Assisted Language Learning (CALL/MALL) vocabulary tasks through the lens of Complexity Theory (CT). CT, which studies how complex systems are influenced by changes in interconnected variables (Larsen-Freeman & Cameron, 2008), has been advocated as an approach that aligns well with Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and CALL research (Godwin-Jones, 2019). In this study, CT was applied to action research involving learners using smartphones to create game-based vocabulary quizzes. It aimed to understand how the context, personal attributes, and in-class interactions affected participation and learning outcomes. The results show the variability and nonlinearity of learners’ language development, the importance of initial conditions, and the vital role of teacher input. It also demonstrated that there are various ways to successfully complete a task, so viewing tasks as dynamic systems may be a fruitful approach.

Starting at birth, the immune system of newborns and children encounters and is influenced by environmental challenges. It is still not completely understood how γδ T cells emerge and adapt during early life. Studying the composition of T cell receptors (TCRs) using next-generation sequencing (NGS) in neonates, infants, and children can provide valuable insights into the adaptation of T cell subsets. To investigate how neonatal γδ T cell repertoires are shaped by microbial exposure after birth, we monitored the γ-chain (TRG) and δ-chain (TRD) repertoires of peripheral blood T cells in newborns, infants, and young children from Europe and sub-Saharan Africa. We identified a set of TRG and TRD sequences that were shared by all children from Europe and Africa. These were primarily public clones, characterized by simple rearrangements of Vγ9 and Vδ2 chains with low junctional diversity and usage of non-TRDJ1 gene segments, reminiscent of early ontogenetic subsets of γδ T cells. Further profiling revealed that these innate, public Vγ9Vδ2(+) T cells underwent an immediate TCR-driven polyclonal proliferation within the first 4 wk of life. In contrast, γδ T cells using Vδ1(+) and Vδ3(+) TRD rearrangements did not significantly expand after birth. However, different environmental cues may lead to the observed increase of Vδ1(+) and Vδ3(+) TRD sequences in the majority of African children. In summary, we show how dynamic γδ TCR repertoires develop directly after birth and present important differences among γδ T cell subsets.

Hypoxia is a ubiquitous feature of cancers, encouraging glycolytic metabolism, proliferation, and resistance to therapy. Nonetheless, hypoxia is a poorly defined term with confounding features described in the literature. Redox biology provides an important link between the external cellular microenvironment and the cell’s response to changing oxygen pressures. In this paper, we demonstrate a correlation between intracellular redox potential (measured using optical nanosensors) and the concentrations of microRNAs (miRNAs) involved in the cell’s response to changes in oxygen pressure. The correlations were established using surprisal analysis (an approach derived from thermodynamics and information theory). We found that measured redox potential changes reflect changes in the free energy computed by surprisal analysis of miRNAs. Furthermore, surprisal analysis identified groups of miRNAs, functionally related to changes in proliferation and metastatic potential that played the most significant role in the cell’s response to changing oxygen pressure.

In this chapter, we discuss the issue of implementing Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) in the English education system over a number of years and education sectors. We also consider the experience of one of us in making a further move from England to the Cayman Islands, a British overseas territory with an education system that is influenced by British tradition but at the same time is distant from many of the politically driven accountability pressures and measures which we describe below. We illustrate first the challenges of developing an RME approach which is operable within the English system, highlighting the issues of student expectation, dominant didactic practices and assessment, all of which had an influence on what we were able to do. Second, we describe the outcomes of interventions in England at early secondary school level (age 12-14, Key Stage 3) and at General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) level (normally age 15-16, Key Stage 4, but also available in post-16 Education). Finally, Frank Eade describes his experience of building on our early work to develop an RME approach in the Cayman Islands. We conclude with a discussion of the lessons learned from these challenges; we argue that despite the problems we have encountered there are reasons to remain optimistic about the potential of an RME approach in the English system.

In this paper two landmark speeches by former Australian Prime Ministers Paul Keating and Kevin Rudd addressing the history of relations between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians are analysed. A systemic functional linguistic (SFL) framework incorporating contextual and linguistic analyses is used to reveal how similarities and differences in the style and communicative functionality of the two speeches results from the dynamic relation between text and context. The similarities in the two texts emerged from their sharing similar situational contexts. Differences in the general style and communicative function of the two texts were shown to have emerged from differences in other contextual factors such as purpose, setting and sociocultural context. It is demonstrated how the relationship between text and context is systematic and two-way and that exploring these dynamic relations in a systemic functional framework can lead to a better understanding of texts and their purposes. Real-time model predictive control (MPC) is used to experimentally assess the transient air-path performance of a two-stage serial variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) fitted to a light duty Diesel engine. The control model is based on a mean value engine model (MVEM) that is developed using data from the engine with a single stage turbocharger and modified to simulate the two-stage arrangement. A tip-in transient manoeuvre is used to assess system performance, in particular the boost-control where MPC is used to achieve close to optimal performance. This paper explores the improvement in transient performance when using two VGT turbochargers in series and considers where the differences between experiment and simulation occur. In general it is shown that there is good agreement between the experimental and simulated system performance. It is observed that the VGT actuator position must be well matched to the modelled position to achieve good on-engine performance. Other factors which affect the experimental performance are related to the actuator dynamics, cyclic-behaviour of the realtime pressure states, time-constants effecting the temperature measurement and the difficulty in accurately modelling the heat transfer in the exhaust, turbines and housings.

1-D engine simulation models are widely used for the analysis and verification of air-path design concepts to assess performance and therefore determine suitable hardware. The transient response is a key driver in the selection process which in most cases requires closed loop control of the model to ensure operation within prescribed physical limits and tracking of reference signals. Since the controller effects the system performance a systematic procedure which achieves close-to-optimal performance is desired, if the full potential of a given hardware configuration is to be properly assessed. For this purpose a particular implementation of Model Predictive Control (MPC) based on a corresponding Mean Value Engine Model (MVEM) is reported here. The MVEM is linearised on-line at each operating point to allow for the formulation of quadratic programming (QP) problems, which are solved as the part of the proposed MPC algorithm. The MPC output is used to control a 1-D engine model. The closed loop performance of such a system is benchmarked against the solution of a related optimal control problem (OCP). The system is also tested for operation at high altitude conditions to demonstrate the ability of the controller to respect specified physical constraints. As an example this study is focused on the transient response of a light-duty automotive Diesel engine. For the cases examined the proposed controller design gives a more systematic procedure than other ad hoc approaches that require considerable tuning effort.

Mean value engine models (MVEM) are well established for the study of IC engine air-path performance. Closed-loop control of the air-path is used to ensure the tracking of reference signals subject to constraints. To meet these requirements model predictive control (MPC) has been applied successfully to several air-path applications. This paper reports on the development of an MVEM and suitable MPC controller for transient performance evaluation which is then applied to the engine. A linearised prediction model is evaluated at each control time step, based on the current operating conditions, which ensures the model remains valid across a wide range of speeds and loads. This linearisation of the nonlinear model allows for the formulation of quadratic programming (QP) problems, which are efficiently solved as part of the proposed MPC algorithm. Special treatment in the measurement and calculation of the states and their derivatives is demonstrated to provide excellent tracking performance and a good match between the model and real-time experimental results. The systematic process of modelling coupled with MPC is shown to closely match test-bed performance, which verifies the methodology for studying air-path hardware alternatives.

There is much that we do not understand about the immune mechanisms whereby vaccines exert their specific and non-specific effects. Most studies take the reductionist approach of examining vaccine responses at the humoral or cellular level. Whole human transcriptional profiling is becoming more accessible, and provides a picture of the entire immune response to vaccination in a single 'snapshot'. The potential uses of such information are enormous, and the data mining tools are becoming more sophisticated to handle the complex data generated. We now face the exciting prospect of gaining in depth knowledge as to exactly what vaccines do to the immune system as a whole, and identifying molecular signatures and biomarkers that can predict immediate and long term outcomes of vaccination. The challenge now is to carry out the studies and generate the much needed data.

Background The risk of optic disc haemorrhages on visual outcome in idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is unknown. We report the type and frequency of optic disc haemorrhages and other funduscopic abnormalities at baseline in the study eye of the 133 subjects enrolled in the Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension Treatment Trial completing 6 months of follow-up. Methods We reviewed optic disc photographs to tabulate the frequency and type of optic disc haemorrhages, other funduscopic abnormalities and papilloedema grades of the study eye at baseline and analyse if their presence is associated with a poor visual outcome. Results 27.2% of subjects had nerve fibre layer haemorrhages in at least one eye. Five of seven, 71% of subjects that met criteria for treatment failure, had nerve fibre layer haemorrhages in at least one eye (Fisher9s exact test: p=0.02). There was a good correlation between presence of nerve fibre layer haemorrhages and Frisen grade (Spearman9s correlation, p=0.002; r=0.271). Subjects with nerve fibre layer haemorrhages had a higher cerebrospinal fluid pressure (40.0 mm water, p=0.04). There was poor correlation between nerve fibre layer haemorrhages at baseline and the perimetric mean deviation change at 6 months. Cotton wool spots were present in 4% of subjects, exudates in 3% and pseudodrusen in 4%. Conclusions Nerve fibre layer haemorrhages are common in patients with IIH with mild visual loss and correlate with the severity of the papilloedema. They occur more frequently in treatment failure subjects and therefore may be associated with poor visual outcomes. Trial registration number NCT01003639, Post-results.

It is widely believed that the chromatin fibre is organized into loops during interphase, with the loop being implicated as an important unit of nuclear function. However, there remains little direct evidence for looping, with estimates of loop size varying widely. This has led to the suggestion that some loops, or even all of them, arise artefactually during isolation as chromatin aggregates so easily. We have now investigated the effect of isolation procedure on loop size using HeLa cells encapsulated in agarose to allow easy manipulation. Loop size in various derivatives (i.e. nuclei, nucleoids, matrices and scaffolds) critically depended on procedure; some (or all) of their loops are artefacts. The loop size in derivatives isolated using the most 'physiological' conditions was 86 kb; this remained unchanged throughout the cell cycle. This loop size is probably an average of a range of loops of between 5 and 200 kb.

Vaccines can have nontargeted heterologous effects that manifest as increased protection against nonvaccine infections, as described for measles vaccine (MV), or increased susceptibility to infections and death, as described following diphtheria-tetanus-whole cell pertussis (DTP) vaccination. The mechanisms are unknown, and high-quality immunological studies are lacking. This study was designed to investigate the heterologous effects of MV and DTP in 302 Gambian infants. The results support a sex-differential immunosuppressive effect of DTP on innate proinflammatory responses and T-cell immunity. Males but not females receiving MV had enhanced proinflammatory innate responses. The results point to modified signaling via Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) as a possible mechanism for the effects on innate immunity. When both vaccines were administered together, purified protein derivative responses were enhanced in females but downregulated in males. Collectively, these data indicate immunological effects that could account for heterologous effects of MV and DTP, to take forward into prospective trials.

The fundamental aims of the Olympic Delivery Authority's procurement team were to deliver the required London 2012 contracts in time for construction to be completed by July 2011, and to implement policy objectives. This paper explains how venue-clusters and pan-venue packages were used to centralise the supply of commodities and support policy objectives. It also reports how the NEC3 suite of contracts was selected and amended to reflect delivery obligations and brand restrictions, and how the contracts worked in practice.

Machine learning and statistical model based classifiers have increasingly been used with more complex and high dimensional biological data obtained from high-throughput technologies. Understanding the impact of various factors associated with large and complex microarray datasets on the predictive performance of classifiers is computationally intensive, under investigated, yet vital in determining the optimal number of biomarkers for various classification purposes aimed towards improved detection, diagnosis, and therapeutic monitoring of diseases. We investigate the impact of microarray based data characteristics on the predictive performance for various classification rules using simulation studies. Our investigation using Random Forest, Support Vector Machines, Linear Discriminant Analysis and k-Nearest Neighbour shows that the predictive performance of classifiers is strongly influenced by training set size, biological and technical variability, replication, fold change and correlation between biomarkers. Optimal number of biomarkers for a classification problem should therefore be estimated taking account of the impact of all these factors. A database of average generalization errors is built for various combinations of these factors. The database of generalization errors can be used for estimating the optimal number of biomarkers for given levels of predictive accuracy as a function of these factors. Examples show that curves from actual biological data resemble that of simulated data with corresponding levels of data characteristics. An R package optBiomarker implementing the method is freely available for academic use from the Comprehensive R Archive Network (http://www.cran.r-project.org/web/packages/optBiomarker/).

Detection of single base pair mutations in an unlabelled nucleic acid target sequence is demonstrated using the time-resolved measurement of the Forster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) between a long lifetime acridine-based fluorophore and a non-fluorescent quencher molecule covalently bound to a DNA Holliday junction-based nanoswitch.

We report a simple DNA sensor device, using a combination of binding and conformational switching, capable of rapid detection of specific single nucleotide polymorphisms in an unlabelled nucleic acid target sequence. The detection is demonstrated using fluorescence lifetime measurements in a high-throughput micro plate reader instrument based on the time-correlated single-photon counting technique. The sensor design and instrumental architecture are capable of detecting perturbations in the molecular structure of the probe-target complex (which is similar to that of a Holliday junction), due to a single base pair mismatch in a synthetic target. Structural information, including fluorophore separations, is obtained using time-resolved Förster resonance energy transfer between two fluorophores covalently bound to the probe molecule. The two probes required are designed to detect a single nucleotide polymorphism from a sequence present on each of the two copies of human chromosome 11.

Three different recombinant forms of CyaA were used to investigate transcriptional responses of murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) using Affymetrix Mouse Genome GeneChips®. These forms were enzymically active, invasive CyaA, non-enzymically active, invasive CyaA (CyaA*) and non-enzymically active, non-invasive CyaA (proCyaA*). BMMs, treated with 20 ng/ml of CyaA for 24 h, showed over 1000 significant changes in gene transcription compared with control cells. CyaA caused an increase in transcription of many inflammatory genes and genes associated with various signalling cascades such as those involved in cyclic AMP-dependent protein kinase A signalling. Most strikingly, CyaA caused down-regulation of numerous genes involved in cell proliferation. CyaA* at 20 ng/ml significantly up-regulated the transcription of only twelve genes after 24 h whereas proCyaA* at this concentration significantly increased the transcription of only two genes.

We present a new type of DNA switch, based on the Holliday junction, that uses a combination of binding and conformational switching to enable specific label-free detection of DNA and RNA. We show that a single RNA oligonucleotide species can be detected in a complex mixture of extracted cellular RNA and demonstrate that by exploiting different aspects of the switch characteristics we can achieve 30-fold discrimination between single-nucleotide mismatches in a DNA oligonucleotide.

Zn was electrochemically deposited onto square TiN electrodes with edge dimensions of 490 μm and 40 μm. These were fabricated by standard microfabrication techniques, which provide an extremely reproducible electrode for experimentation. Reliable constant-potential electrodeposition of Zn on the TiN was performed at −1.2 V, just below the Zn/Zn2+ redox potential. At more negative potentials, the hydrogen evolution reaction on TiN interfered with bulk metal electrodeposition, resulting in poor quality Zn films. A two-step plating procedure was shown to be most efficient for electrochemical deposition of Zn, with Zn nucleation on the TiN substrate at high cathodic overpotential during the first step and a second step of bulk metal growth on the nucleated layer at low cathodic overpotential. These results were most consistent with 3D progressive nucleation of Zn on the TiN surface. Using this procedure, deposits of Zn on 490 μm TiN electrodes were uniform. In contrast, Zn deposits on 40 μm electrodes formed high-surface area and volume surface structures resulting from preferential growth at the electrode corners due to enhanced hemispherical diffusion at these sites. This should enable the formation of high surface area, high current density Zn anodes on biocompatible TiN microelectrodes, which could find application as improved microanodes for implantable miniature power supplies, e.g., implantable glucose sensors and internal cardioverter defibrillators. © 2015 SAE Japan. There is a trend towards increasing the degree of engine downsizing due to its potential for reducing fuel consumption and hence lowering CO2 emissions. However, downsizing introduces significant challenges for the engine airpath hardware and control, if driveability is to be maintained at an acceptable level. The transient response of the engine is affected by both the hardware selection and the associated controller. In order to understand the potential performance and limitations of the possible airpath hardware, a mean value model of the engine under consideration can be utilized. One benefit of these models is that they can be used as the basis of a model predictive controller which gives close to optimal performance with minimal tuning effort. In this paper we examine different two-stage series sequential turbocharger arrangements. The benefits of the mean value engine model, together with a model based controller are shown to observe the system and actuator constraints and demonstrate the best achievable performance for several configurations. This systematic approach to system evaluation is invaluable for comparing system performance without the risk of the controller prejudicing the result or requiring an excessive amount of tuning.

Herein, we report the draft genome sequences of six individual Staphylococcus epidermidis clones, cultivated from blood taken from different preterm neonatal sepsis patients at the Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.

Conformational transitions in a 4-way DNA junction when titrated with ionic solutions are studied using time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Parameters characterising the transition in terms of critical ion concentration (c 1/2) and the Hill coefficient for ion binding are obtained by fitting a simple two-state model using steady-state spectra. Data obtained from a fluorescence lifetime plate reader and analysed by fitting a single exponential to donor fluorescence lifetime decays are shown to be in good agreement with the parameters obtained from steady-state measurements. Fluorescence lifetimes, however, offer advantages, particularly in being independent of fluorophore concentration, output intensity, inhomogeneity in the excitation source and output wavelength. We demonstrate preliminary FRET-FLIM images of DNA junction solutions obtained using a picosecond gated CCD which are in agreement with results from a fluorescence lifetime plate reader. The results suggest that time-resolved FRET-FLIM is sensitive to subtle structural changes and may be useful in assays based on 4-way DNA junctions.

Over a number of years we have been investigating ways in which e-communication can contribute to children's writing development and how new technology re-frames our understandings of writing in the classroom (Merchant, 2003; Burnett et al, 2004; Burnett et al, 2005; Merchant, 2005). Here we analyse the digital writing of pupils from two linked primary school classes (Year 3–5) in the North of England. Part of the project involved the pupils in communicating about themselves and their interests to email partners of the same age. In this article, we track children's identity performance in informal message exchange and show how this contributed to a final knowledge product. We explore how work that had its origins in representing children's lives and identities reflected their position in wider cultural worlds. This perspective causes us to question whether there are there sufficient opportunities for pupils to explore and express ‘who they are’ in the current content-driven curriculum where public genres are central and personal voice is peripheral.

Much has been written about the transformative influence of new technology on the school curriculum, but only a small number of studies have focused on the practical implications for primary literacy. The dominant paradigm seems less concerned with transformation, instead favouring a view of ‘technology as enrichment’. This case study examines the possibilities of transformation through an electronically mediated partnership between two primary schools in the North of England. Children's digital texts are analysed alongside interview and observational data in order to document what transformation might look like in practice. The study illustrates how technology can be used to promote new literacy practices in the classroom, through the production of new kinds of texts. It also documents the emergence of peer‐based learning relationships and changing perceptions of the teacher's role.

Focuses on Russia and examines the development and significance of attaining an entrepreneurial business culture together with clear enforceable property rights within a legal framework. The connection between property rights, entrenched economic growth and an entrepreneurial culture together with the influence of history and culture on the Russian legal system is reviewed and assessed. There is an overview of recent relevant business and property law legislation including the land codes of 200 I and 2002 and the civil code of 1995 and the connected problems as Russia strives to become a market economy. The article also incorporates a Finnish perspective which comprises of the authors own views whilst working in Finland together with aspects of the Finnish outlook in relation to their business dealings with Russia. This also includes an interview with a company’s managing director (specialising in Russia’s business environment and the development of Finnish entrepreneurial activity’. The author concludes on the significance of the socialist legacy and its effect on Russia’s legal system and property rights. In particular how it is perceived by entrepreneurs and the effect on the purchase of land and production facilities because of the risk involved.

The Teacher Training Agency'srecent drive to increase flexibility in InitialTeacher Training provision in the UK hasprompted a growing interest in distancelearning. A number of Higher Educationproviders are now using new technology and newforms of communication in their coursedelivery. Among the various forms available,synchronous online chat, usually associatedwith social or recreational interaction, hasattracted little attention in the researchliterature. This medium requires new approachesand skills as participants struggle to makemeaning in multi-stranded conversations.Building on previous studies that have exploredthe innovative use of language in recreationalchat, this study focuses on student discussionsin the context of educational chat. It exploreshow student teachers can use this electronicenvironment to discuss educational issues, andin so doing, gain experience of thecommunicative potential of new media. Analysisof the ways in which these students uselanguage in this environment is followed bysome initial thoughts about the potential ofsynchronous chat as a medium for learningwithin an educational context. This paperidentifies key elements in the organisation ofeducational chat and provides insight into thestrategies used by participants.
