Measurements of low field magnetization, trapped flux magnetization and 5 K flux creep in single crystal of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ under pressure up to 7.5 GPa in a diamond pressure cell are presented. The observed evolution of the temperature dependence of the self-field critical current and slowing down of the base temperature flux creep rate are explained within the two sources of pinning hypothesis involving presence of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ intergrowths suggested in the literature. Above the half collapsed tetragonal structural transition under pressure, where superconductivity is non-bulk or absent, critically diminished or no diamagnetism and flux trapped magnetization were observed.

Upcoming surveys such as Euclid, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) and the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope (Roman) will detect hundreds of high-redshift (z > 7) quasars, but distinguishing them from the billions of other sources in these catalogues represents a significant data analysis challenge. We address this problem by extending existing selection methods by using both i) Bayesian model comparison on measured fluxes and ii) a likelihood-based goodness-of-fit test on images, which are then combined using an Fbeta statistic. The result is an automated, reproduceable and objective high-redshift quasar selection pipeline. We test this on both simulations and real data from the cross-matched Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) catalogues. On this cross-matched dataset we achieve an AUC score of up to 0.795 and an F3 score of up to 0.79, sufficient to be applied to the Euclid, LSST and Roman data when available., Comment: 21 pages, 24 figures; to be submitted to the Open Journal of Astrophysics

We present a deep X-Shooter rest-frame UV to optical spectral analysis of the heavily reddened quasar, ULASJ2315+043 at z=2.566, known to reside in a major-merger host galaxy. The rest-frame optical is best-fit by a dust-reddened quasar E(B-V)_QSO = 1.55 with black-hole mass log10(Hbeta, MBH [M_sol]) = 10.26 +\- 0.05, bolometric luminosity L_Bol = 10^48.16 erg s^-1 and Eddington-scaled accretion rate log10(\lambda_Edd) = -0.19. We find remarkable similarities between ULASJ2315+043 and the high-redshift Little Red Dots (LRDs). The rest-frame UV cannot be explained by a dusty quasar component alone and requires an additional blue component consistent with either a star-forming host galaxy or scattered AGN light. We detect broad high-ionisation emission lines in the rest-UV, supporting the scattered light interpretation for the UV excess. The scattering fraction represents just 0.05% of the total luminosity of ULASJ2315+043. Analysis of the mid infra-red SED suggests an absence of hot dust on torus-scales similar to what is observed for LRDs. The obscuring medium is therefore likely on galaxy scales. We detect narrow, blueshifted associated absorption line systems in CIV, NV, SiIV and SiIII. There is evidence for significant high-velocity (>1000 km s^-1) outflows in both the broad and narrow line regions as traced by CIV and [OIII] emission. The kinetic power of the [OIII] wind is e_ion = 10^44.61 erg s^-1 ~ 0.001 L_Bol. Magnetic anisotropy is a crucial characteristic for enhancing spintronic device performance. The synthesis of SmCrGe$_3$ single crystals through a high-temperature solution method has led to the determination of uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Phase verification was achieved using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), powder, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction techniques. Electrical transport and specific heat measurements indicate a Curie temperature ($T_C$) of approximately 160 K, while magnetization measurements were utilized to determine the anisotropy fields and constants. Curie-Weiss fitting applied to magnetization data suggests the contribution of both Sm and Cr in the paramagnetic phase. Additionally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations explored the electronic structures and magnetic properties of SmCrGe$_3$, revealing a significant easy-axis single-ion Sm magnetocrystalline anisotropy of 16 meV/f.u.. The absence of security measures between DNS recursive resolvers and authoritative nameservers has been exploited by both inline and off-path attacks. While many security proposals have been made in practice and previous literature, they typically suffer from deployability barriers and/or inadequate security properties. The absence of a broadly adopted security solution between resolvers and nameservers motivates a new scheme that mitigates these issues in previous proposals. We present DNSSEC+, which addresses security and deployability downsides of DNSSEC, while retaining its benefits. DNSSEC+ takes advantage of the existent DNSSEC trust model and authorizes the nameservers within a zone for short intervals to serve the zone data securely, facilitating real-time security properties for DNS responses, without requiring long-term private keys to be duplicated (thus put at risk) on authoritative nameservers. Regarding name resolution latency, DNSSEC+ offers a performance comparable to less secure schemes. Quantum materials with stacking van der Waals (vdW) layers that can host non-trivial band structure topology and magnetism have shown many interesting properties. Here using high-throughput density functional theory calculations, we design and predict tetragonal vdW-layered quantum materials in the MPd$_5$I$_2$ structure (M=Ga, In and 3d transition metals). Our study shows that besides the known AlPd$_5$I$_2$, the -MPd$_5$- structural motif of three-layer slabs separated by two I layers can host a variety of metal elements giving arise to topological interesting features and highly tunable magnetic properties in both bulk and single layer 2D structures. Among them, TiPd$_5$I$_2$ and InPd$_5$I$_2$ host a pair of Dirac points and a likely strong topological insulator state for the band manifolds just above and below the top valence band, respectively, with their single layers possibly hosting quantum spin Hall states. CrPd$_5$I$_2$ is a ferromagnet with a large out-of-plane magneto-anisotropy energy, desirable for rare-earth-free permanent magnets., Comment: 25 pages, 6 figures

SrCo$_2$P$_2$ with a tetragonal structure is known to be a Stoner-enhanced Pauli paramagnetic metal being nearly ferromagnetic. Recently Schmidt et al. [Phys. Rev. B 108, 174415 (2023)] reported that a ferromagnetic ordered state is actually induced by a small Ni substitution for Co of $x$ = 0.02 in Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$ where antiferromagnetic ordered phase also appears by further Ni-substitution with $x = 0.06-0.35$. Here, using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on $^{31}$P nuclei, we have investigated how the magnetic properties change by the Ni substitution in Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$ from a microscopic point of view, especially focusing on the evolution of magnetic fluctuations with the Ni substitution and the characterization of the magnetically ordered states. The temperature dependences of $^{31}$P spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature ($1/T_1T$) and Knight shift ($K$) for SrCo$_2$P$_2$ are reasonably explained by a model where a double-peak structure for the density of states near the Fermi energy is assumed. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the $T_1$ and $K$ data, ferromagnetic spin fluctuations are found to dominate in the ferromagnetic Sr(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$P$_2$ as well as the antiferromagnets where no clear antiferromagnetic fluctuations are observed. We also found the distribution of the ordered Co moments in the magnetically ordered states from the analysis of the $^{31}$P NMR spectra exhibiting a characteristic rectangular-like shape., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. The discovery of novel quantum materials within ternary phase spaces containing antagonistic pair such as Fe with Bi, Pb, In, and Ag, presents significant challenges yet holds great potential. In this work, we investigate the stabilization of these immiscible pairs through the integration of Cerium (Ce), an abundant rare-earth and cost-effective element. By employing a machine learning (ML)-guided framework, particularly crystal graph convolutional neural networks (CGCNN), combined with first-principles calculations, we efficiently explore the composition/structure space and predict 9 stable and 37 metastable Ce-Fe-X (X=Bi, Pb, In and Ag) ternary compounds. Our findings include the identification of multiple new stable and metastable phases, which are evaluated for their structural and energetic properties. These discoveries not only contribute to the advancement of quantum materials but also offer viable alternatives to critical rare earth elements, underscoring the importance of Ce-based intermetallic compounds in technological applications.

There are many processes in cell biology that can be modeled in terms of particles diffusing in a two-dimensional (2D) or three-dimensional (3D) bounded domain $\Omega \subset \R^d$ containing a set of small subdomains or interior compartments $\calU_j$, $j=1,\ldots,N$ (singularly-perturbed diffusion problems). The domain $\Omega$ could represent the cell membrane, the cell cytoplasm, the cell nucleus or the extracellular volume, while an individual compartment could represent a synapse, a membrane protein cluster, a biological condensate, or a quorum sensing bacterial cell. In this review we use a combination of matched asymptotic analysis and Green's function methods to solve a general type of singular boundary value problems (BVP) in 2D and 3D, in which an inhomogeneous Robin condition is imposed on each interior boundary $\partial \calU_j$. This allows us to incorporate a variety of previous studies of singularly perturbed diffusion problems into a single mathematical modeling framework. We mainly focus on steady-state solutions and the approach to steady-state, but also highlight some of the current challenges in dealing with time-dependent solutions and randomly switching processes, Comment: 44 pages, 9 figures

London, $\lambda_L (T)$, and Campbell, $\lambda_{C} (T)$, penetration depths were measured in single crystals of a topological superconductor candidate $\text{AuSn}_4$. At low temperatures, $\lambda_L (T)$ is exponentially attenuated and, if fitted with the power law, $\lambda(T) \sim T^n$, gives exponents $n>4$, indistinguishable from the isotropic single $s-$wave gap Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) asymptotic. The superfluid density fits perfectly in the entire temperature range to the BCS theory. The superconducting transition temperature, $T_c = 2.40 \pm 0.05\:\text{K}$, does not change after 2.5 MeV electron irradiation, indicating the validity of the Anderson theorem for isotropic $s-$wave superconductors. Campbell penetration depth before and after electron irradiation shows no hysteresis between the zero-field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC) protocols, consistent with the parabolic pinning potential. Interestingly, the critical current density estimated from the original Campbell theory decreases after irradiation, implying that a more sophisticated theory involving collective effects is needed to describe vortex pinning in this system. In general, our thermodynamic measurements strongly suggest that the bulk response of the $\text{AuSn}_4$ crystals is fully consistent with the isotropic $s-$wave weak-coupling BCS superconductivity.

Understanding the links between different phases of outflows from active galactic nuclei is a key goal in extragalactic astrophysics. Here we compare [OIII] $\lambda\lambda$4960,5008 outflow signatures in quasars with and without Broad Absorption Lines (BALs), aiming to test how the broad absorption troughs seen in the rest-frame ultraviolet are linked to the narrow line region outflows seen in the rest-frame optical. We present new near-infrared spectra from Magellan/FIRE which cover [OIII] in 12 quasars with 2.1 < z < 2.3, selected to have strong outflow signatures in CIV $\lambda$1550. Combining with data from the literature, we build a sample of 73 BAL, 115 miniBAL and 125 non-BAL QSOs with 1.5 < z < 2.6. The strength and velocity width of [OIII] correlate strongly with the CIV emission properties, but no significant difference is seen in the [OIII] emission-line properties between the BALs, non-BALs and miniBALs once the dependence on CIV emission is taken into account. A weak correlation is observed between the velocities of CIV BALs and [OIII] emission, which is accounted for by the fact that both outflow signatures correlate with the underlying CIV emission properties. Our results add to the growing evidence that BALs and non-BALs are drawn from the same parent population and are consistent with a scenario wherein BAL troughs are intermittent tracers of persistent quasar outflows, with a part of such outflow becoming optically thick along our line-of-sight for sporadic periods of time within which BALs are observed., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures. We demonstrate a sapphire machining process integrated with intermediate-scale quantum processors. The process allows through-substrate electrical connections, necessary for low-frequency mode-mitigation, as well as signal-routing, which are vital as quantum computers scale in qubit number, and thus dimension. High-coherence qubits are required to build fault-tolerant quantum computers and so material choices are an important consideration when developing a qubit technology platform. Sapphire, as a low-loss dielectric substrate, has shown to support high-coherence qubits. In addition, recent advances in material choices such as tantalum and titanium-nitride, both deposited on a sapphire substrate, have demonstrated qubit lifetimes exceeding 0.3 ms. However, the lack of any process equivalent of deep-silicon etching to create through-substrate-vias in sapphire, or to inductively shunt large dies, has limited sapphire to small-scale processors, or necessitates the use of chiplet architecture. Here, we present a sapphire machining process that is compatible with high-coherence qubits. This technique immediately provides a means to scale QPUs with integrated mode-mitigation, and provides a route toward the development of through-sapphire-vias, both of which allow the advantages of sapphire to be leveraged as well as facilitating the use of sapphire-compatible materials for large-scale QPUs., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

A quantum theory of gravity implies a fine-grained structure of spacetime, which can be conveniently modeled as some form of pixelation at the Planck scale, with potentially observable consequences. In this work, we build upon previous results to investigate the effect of pixelation on the quantum vacuum, making use of the framework of Doubly Special Relativity (DSR). At the center of the DSR approach is an observer dependent length scale, defining the pixelation of spacetime. A key feature of quantum field theory in DSR is the dispersive nature of the vacuum state and the associated appearance of curvature in momentum space. As a result, the standard treatment of the renormalized stress-energy-momentum tensor acquires correction terms. As an illustration, we present here a calculation of the thermal vacuum and modified Casimir effect, using both modified propagators and momentum measures. We choose a consistent choice of momentum space metric that both generates the modified dispersion relations we use and preserves the Lorentz invariant character of the results obtained. High-throughput $ab$ $initio$ calculations are the indispensable parts of data-driven discovery of new materials with desirable properties, as reflected in the establishment of several online material databases. The accumulation of extensive theoretical data through computations enables data-driven discovery by constructing machine learning and artificial intelligence models to predict novel compounds and forecast their properties. Efficient usage and extraction of data from these existing online material databases can accelerate the next stage materials discovery that targets different and more advanced properties, such as electron-phonon coupling for phonon-mediated superconductivity. However, extracting data from these databases, generating tailored input files for different $ab$ $initio$ calculations, performing such calculations, and analyzing new results can be demanding tasks. Here, we introduce a software package named "HTESP" (High-Throughput Electronic Structure Package) written in Python and Bash languages, which automates the entire workflow including data extraction, input file generation, calculation submission, result collection and plotting. Our HTESP will help speed up future computational materials discovery processes.

We report an unusual anisotropic paramagnetic peak effect observed in reversible magnetization of a single crystalline nodal superconductor $\text{Rh}_{17}\text{S}_{15}$. Both temperature- and field-dependent magnetization measurements reveal a distinct novel vortex state above approximately 1 T. This peak effect is most pronounced when the magnetic field, $H$, is applied parallel to the $\left[111\right]$ direction, whereas it diminishes for $H\parallel\left[110\right]$. Intriguingly, for $H\parallel\left[100\right]$, instead of a peak, we observe a step-like decrease in $M(T)$, with the step amplitude increasing in larger applied magnetic fields. This behavior is opposite to the expectations of conventional Meissner expulsion. The magnitude of the peak effect, expressed in terms of dimensionless volume susceptibility, is on the order of $\Delta\chi=10^{-5}$ (with full diamagnetic screening corresponding to $\chi=-1$). The observed anisotropic paramagnetic vortex response is unusual considering the cubic symmetry of $\text{Rh}_{17}\text{S}_{15}$. We propose that in this distinct vortex phase, a small but finite attractive interaction between vortices below $H_{c2}$ may be responsible for this unusual phenomenon. Furthermore, the vortices seem to prefer aligning along the $\left[111\right]$ direction, rotating toward it when the magnetic field is applied in other directions. Our findings add another item to the list of unusual properties of $\text{Rh}_{17}\text{S}_{15}$ that attracted recent attention as the first unconventional superconductor that has a mineral analog, miassite, found in nature.

$\text{La}_{5}\text{Co}_{2}\text{Ge}_{3}$ is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature, $T_C$, of $\sim$ 3.8 K and a remarkably small saturated moment of 0.1 $\mu_{B}/\text{Co}$. Here we present the growth and characterization of single crystals of the ${\text{La}_{5}\text{(Co}_{1-x}\text {Ni}_{x})_2\text {Ge}_{3}}$ series for 0.00 $\leq x \leq$ 0.186. We measured powder X-ray diffraction, composition as well as anisotropic temperature dependent resistivity, temperature and field dependent magnetization along with heat capacity on these single crystals. We also measured muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu \text{SR}$) for some Ni substitutions ($x$ = 0.027, 0.036, 0.074) to study the evolution of internal field with Ni substitution. Using the measured data we infer a low temperature, transition temperature-composition phase diagram for ${\text{La}_{5}\text{(Co}_{1-x}\text {Ni}_{x})_2\text {Ge}_{3}}$. We find that $T_{C}$ is suppressed for low dopings, $x \leq 0.014 $; whereas for $0.036 \leq {x} \leq 0.186 $, the samples are antiferromagnetic with a Neel temperature, $T_{N}$, that goes through a weak and shallow maximum ($T_N \sim$ 3.4 K for $ x \sim$ 0.07) and then gradually decreases to 2.4 K by $x$ = 0.186. For intermediate Ni substitutions, $0.016 \leq {x} \leq 0.027 $, two transition temperatures are inferred with $T_N > T_C$. Whereas the $T-x$ phase diagram for ${\text{La}_{5}\text{(Co}_{1-x}\text {Ni}_{x})_2\text {Ge}_{3}}$ and the $T-p$ phase diagram determined for the parent $\text{La}_{5}\text{Co}_{2}\text{Ge}_{3}$ under hydrostatic pressure are grossly similar, changing from a low doping or low pressure ferromagnetic (FM) ground state to a high doped or pressure antiferromagnetic (AFM) state, perturbation by Ni substitution enabled us to identify an intermediate doping regime where both FM and AFM transitions occur., Comment: 24 pages, 40 figures

We study the topological Weyl type-II semimetal WTe$_2$ via Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and Density Functional Theory calculations (DFT). We succesfully determine the band structure at zero field close to the Fermi level by comparing quasiparticle interference (QPI) experiments with DFT. Under magnetic fields, we observe Landau level quantization on atomic scale measurements and find a level sequence evidencing a linearly dispersing portion of the band structure. Our results establish the long sought connection between Weyl cones and Landau quantization in WTe$_2$. To advance our understanding of the evolution of the interstellar medium (ISM) of our Galaxy, numerical models of Milky Way (MW) type galaxies are widely used. However, most models only vaguely resemble the MW (e.g. in total mass), and often use imposed analytic potentials (which cannot evolve dynamically). This poses a problem in asserting their applicability for the interpretation of observations of our own Galaxy. The goal of this work is to identify a numerical model that is not only a MW-type galaxy, but one that can mimic some of the main observed structures of our Galaxy, using dynamically evolving potentials, so that it can be used as a base model to study the ISM cycle in a galaxy like our own. This paper introduces a suite of 15 MW-type galaxy models developed using the {\sc arepo} numerical code, that are compared to Galactic observations of $^{12}$CO and \ion{H}{I} emission via longitude-velocity plots, from where we extract and compare the skeletons of major galactic features and the terminal gas velocities. We found that our best-fitting model to the overall structure, also reproduces some of the more specific observed features of the MW, including a bar with a pattern speed of $30.0 \pm 0.2$ km\,s$^{-1}$\,kpc$^{-1}$, a bar half-length of $3.2 \pm 0.8$\,kpc. Our model shows large streaming motions around spiral arms, and strong radial motions well beyond the inner bar. This model highlights the complex motions of a dynamic MW-type galaxy and has the potential to offer valuable insight into how our Galaxy regulates the ISM and star formation., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 24 pages, 23 figures, 3 tables

In an extension of our previous work, [Sergey L Bud'ko et al 2023 Supercond. Sci. Technol. 36 115001] the measurements of temperature dependent magnetization associated with trapped magnetic flux in a small single crystal of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$, using zero-field-cooled and field-cooled protocols were performed, on the same crystal, at ambient pressure without a pressure cell and at 2.2 GPa in a commercial diamond anvil cell (DAC), showing comparable results. The data show that with a proper care and understanding, trapped flux measurements in superconductors indeed can be performed on samples in DACs under pressure, as was done on superhydrides [V S Minkov et al 2023 Nat. Phys. 19 1293].

ThCr2Si2-type intermetallic compounds are known to exhibit superelasticity associated with structural transitions through lattice collapse and expansion. These transitions occur via the formation and breaking of Si-type bonds, respectively, under uniaxial loading along the [0 0 1] direction. Unlike most ThCr2Si2-type intermetallic compounds, which have either an uncollapsed tetragonal structure or a collapsed tetragonal structure, SrNi2P2 possesses a third type of collapsed structured: a one-third orthorhombic structure, for which one expects the occurrence of unique structural transitions and superelastic behavior. In this study, uniaxial compression and tension tests were conducted on micron-sized SrNi2P2 single crystalline columns at room temperature, 200K, and 100K, to investigate the influence of loading direction and temperature on the superelasticity of SrNi2P2. Experimental data and density functional theory calculations revealed the presence of tension-compression asymmetry in the structural transitions and superelasticity, as well as an asymmetry in their temperature dependence, due to the opposite superelastic process associated with compression (forming P-P bonds) and tension (breaking P-P bonds). Additionally, following thermodynamics, the observations suggest that this asymmetric superelasticity could lead to an opposite elastocaloric effect between compression and tension, which could be beneficial potentially in obtaining large temperature changes compared to conventional superelastic solids that show the same elastocaloric effect regardless of loading direction. These results provide an important fundamental insight into the structural transitions, superelasticity processes, and potential elastocaloric effects in SrNi2P2., Comment: 42 pages, 13 figures

Classical electromagnetic radiation from moving point charges is foundational, but the thermal dynamics responsible for classical acceleration temperature are poorly understood. We investigate the thermal properties of classical electromagnetic radiation in the context of the correspondence between accelerated electrons and moving mirrors, focusing on three trajectories with asymptotically infinite (Davies-Fulling), asymptotically zero (Walker-Davies), and eternally uniform acceleration. The latter two are argued not to be thermal, while the former is found to emit thermal photons with a temperature that depends on the electron's speed. Star formation estimates based on the counting of YSOs is commonly applied to nearby star-forming regions in the Galaxy. With this method, the SFRs are measured using the counts of YSOs in a particular protostellar Class, a typical protostellar mass, and the lifetime associated with this Class. However, the assumptions underlying the validity of the method such as that of a constant star formation history (SFH) and whether the method is valid for all protostellar Classes has never been fully tested. In this work, we use Monte Carlo models to test the validity of the method. We build synthetic clusters in which stars form at times that are randomly drawn from a specified SFH. The latter is either constant or time-dependent with a burst like behavior. The masses of the protostars are randomly drawn from an IMF which can be either similar to that of the Milky Way field or be variable . For each star in every cluster, the lifetimes associated with the different protostellar classes are also randomly drawn from Gaussian distribution functions centered around their most likely value as suggested by the observations. We find that only the SFR derived using the Class 0 population can reproduce the true SFR at all epochs, and this is true irrespective of the shape of the SFH. For a constant SFH, the SFR derived using the more evolved populations of protostars (Classes I, F, II, and III) reproduce the real SFR only at later epochs which correspond to epochs at which their numbers have reached a steady state. For a time-dependent burst-like SFH, all SFR estimates based on the number counts of the evolved populations fail to reproduce the true SFR. We also show how the offsets between Class I and Class II based SFRs and the true SFR plotted as a function of the number ratios of Class I and Class II versus Class III YSOs can be used in order to constrain the SFH of observed molecular clouds., Comment: Submitted. We use high-resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) to investigate the electronic structure of the charge density wave (CDW) system LaSb$_2$. This compound is among an interesting group of materials that manifests both a CDW transition and lower temperature superconductivity. We find the DFT calculations to be in good agreement with our ARPES data. The Fermi surface of LaSb$_2$ consists of two small hole pockets close to $\Gamma$ and four larger pockets near the Brillouin zone (BZ) boundary. The overall features of the Fermi surface do not vary with temperature. A saddle point is present at -0.19 $eV$ below the Fermi level at $\Gamma$. Critical points in band structure have more pronounced effects on a materials properties when they are located closer to the Fermi level, making doped LaSb$_2$ compounds a potential interesting subject of future research. Multiple peaks are present in the generalized, electronic susceptibility calculations indicating the presence of possible nesting vectors. We were not able to detect any signatures of the CDW transition at 355 K, pointing to the subtle nature of this transition. This is unusual, given that such a high transition temperature is expected to be associated with the presence of a large CDW gap. This is confirmed through investigation of the Fermi surface and through analysis of momentum distribution curves (MDC). It is possible that changes are subtle and occur below current sensitivity of our measurements.

We demonstrate in a proof-of-concept numerical hydrodynamics calculation that the narrow radial filamentary structures seen in Pa 30 could be generated through highly efficient cooling (e.g. via line emission) in the ejecta. Efficient cooling in the ejecta causes a drop of pressure support in Rayleigh-Taylor fingers, leading them to be compressed, and suppressing the growth of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Following this result, we make three predictions that could determine whether this is the mechanism responsible for shaping Pa 30: First, we predict very strong emission lines, strong enough to cool a significant fraction of the shock energy in an expansion time. Secondly, we predict that the forward shock should be highly corrugated on small scales, with the shock front closely following the structure of the filaments. Third, we predict that these filaments should be nearly ballistic, with velocities around 90% of the free-expansion velocity ($v \approx 0.9 ~r/t$). Supernova remnants (SNRs) exhibit varying degrees of anisotropy, which have been extensively modeled using numerical methods. We implement a technique to measure anisotropies in SNRs by calculating power spectra from their high-resolution images. To test this technique, we develop 3D hydrodynamical models of supernova remnants and generate synthetic x-ray images from them. Power spectra extracted from both the 3D models and the synthetic images exhibit the same dominant angular scale, which separates large scale features from small scale features due to hydrodynamic instabilities. The angular power spectrum at small length scales during relatively early times is too steep to be consistent with Kolmogorov turbulence, but it transitions to Kolmogorov turbulence at late times. As an example of how this technique can be applied to observations, we extract a power spectrum from a \textit{Chandra} observation of Tycho's SNR and compare with our models. Our predicted power spectrum picks out the angular scale of Tycho's fleece-like structures and also agrees with the small-scale power seen in Tycho. We use this to extract an estimate for the density of the circumstellar gas ($n \sim 0.28/\mathrm{cm^3}$), consistent with previous measurements of this density by other means. The power spectrum also provides an estimate of the density profile of the outermost ejecta. We analyze accretion-rate time series for equal-mass binaries in co-planar gaseous disks spanning a continuous range of orbital eccentricities up to 0.8, for both prograde and retrograde systems. The dominant variability timescales match that of previous investigations; the binary orbital period is dominant for prograde binaries with $e \gtrsim 0.1$, with a 5 times longer "lump" period taking over for $e\lesssim 0.1$. This lump period fades and drops from 5 times to 4.5 times the binary period as $e$ approaches 0.1, where it vanishes. For retrograde orbits, the binary orbital period dominates at $e \lesssim 0.55$ and is accompanied by a 2 times longer-timescale periodicity at higher eccentricities. The shape of the accretion-rate time series varies with binary eccentricity. For prograde systems, the orientation of an eccentric disk causes periodic trading of accretion between the binary components in a ratio that we report as a function of binary eccentricity. We present a publicly available tool, binlite, that can rapidly ($\lesssim 0.01$~sec) generate templates for the accretion-rate time series, onto either binary component, for choice of binary eccentricity below 0.8. As an example use-case, we build lightcurve models where the accretion rate through the circumbinary disk and onto each binary component sets contributions to the emitted specific flux. We combine these rest-frame, accretion-variability lightcurves with observer-dependent Doppler boosting and binary self-lensing. This allows a flexible approach to generating lightcurves over a wide range of binary and observer parameter space. We outline how pairs of strongly immiscible elements, referred to here as antagonistic pairs, can be used to synthesize ternary compounds with quasi-reduced dimensional motifs. By identifying third elements that are compatible with a given antagonistic pair, ternary compounds can be formed in which the third element segregates the immiscible atoms into spatially separated substructures. Quasi-low dimensional structural units are a natural consequence of the immiscible atoms seeking to avoid contact in the solid-state. As proof of principle, we present the discovery and physical properties of La$_4$Co$_4$X (X = Pb, Bi, Sb), a new family of intermetallics based on the antagonistic pairs Co-Pb and Co-Bi. La$_4$Co$_4$X adopts a new orthorhombic crystal structure (space group Pbam) containing quasi-2D Co slabs and La-X layers that stack along the a-axis. Consistent with our proposal, the La atoms separate the Co and X substructures, ensuring there are no direct contacts between immiscible atoms. Within the Co slabs, the atoms occupy the vertices of corner sharing tetrahedra and triangles, and this motif produces flat electronic bands near the Fermi level that favor magnetism. The Co is moment bearing in La$_4$Co$_4$X, and we show that whereas La$_4$Co$_4$Pb behaves as a three dimensional antiferromagnet with T$_N$ = 220 K, La$_4$Co$_4$Bi and La$_4$Co$_4$Sb have behavior consistent with low dimensional magnetic coupling and ordering, with T$_N$ = 153 K and 143 K respectively. In addition to the Pb, Bi, and Sb based La$_4$Co$_4$X compounds, we were likely able to produce an analogous La$_4$Co$_4$Sn in polycrystalline form, although we were unable to isolate single crystals. We anticipate that using mutually compatible third elements with an antagonistic pair represents a generalizable design principle for discovering new materials and structure types containing low-dimensional substructures.

Gamma-ray burst (GRB) afterglows are emissions from ultrarelativistic blast waves produced by a narrow jet interacting with surrounding matter. Since the first multimessenger observation of a neutron star merger, hydrodynamic modeling of GRB afterglows for structured jets with smoothly varying angular energy distributions has gained increased interest. While the evolution of a jet is well described by self-similar solutions in both ultrarelativistic and Newtonian limits, modeling the transitional phase remains challenging. This is due to the nonlinear spreading of a narrow jet to a spherical configuration and the breakdown of self-similar solutions. Analytical models are limited in capturing these nonlinear effects, while relativistic hydrodynamic simulations are computationally expensive, which restricts the exploration of various initial conditions. In this work, we introduce a reduced hydrodynamic model that approximates the blast wave as an infinitely thin two-dimensional surface. Further assuming axial symmetry, this model simplifies the simulation to one dimension and drastically reduces the computational costs. We have compared our modeling to relativistic hydrodynamic simulations and semianalytic methods, and applied it to fit the light curve and flux centroid motion of GRB 170817A. These comparisons demonstrate good agreement and validate our approach. We have developed this method into a numerical tool, \texttt{jetsimpy}, which models the synchrotron GRB afterglow emission from a blast wave with arbitrary angular energy and Lorentz factor distribution. Although the code is built with GRB afterglow in mind, it applies to any relativistic jet. The emerging field of stochastic thermodynamics extends classical ideas of entropy, heat and work to non-equilibrium systems. One notable finding is that the second law of thermodynamics typically only holds after taking appropriate averages with respect to an ensemble of stochastic trajectories. The resulting average rate of entropy production then quantifies the degree of departure from thermodynamic equilibrium. In this paper we investigate how the presence of a semipermeable interface increases the average entropy production of a single diffusing particle. Starting from the Gibbs-Shannon entropy for the particle probability density, we show that a semipermeable interface or membrane $\calS$ increases the average rate of entropy production by an amount that is equal to the product of the flux through the interface and the logarithm of the ratio of the probability density on either side of the interface, integrated along $\calS$. The entropy production rate thus vanishes at thermodynamic equilibrium, but can be nonzero during the relaxation to equilibrium, or if there exists a nonzero stationary equilibrium state (NESS). We illustrate the latter using the example of diffusion with stochastic resetting on a circle, and show that the average rate of interfacial entropy production is a nonmonotonic function of the resetting rate and the permeability. Finally, we give a probabilistic interpretation of the interfacial entropy production rate using so-called snapping out Brownian motion. The magnetoelectronic coupling can be defined as cross-domain coupling between electronic and magnetic properties, where modulation in magnetic properties changes the electronic properties. In this letter, an explicit experimental evidence of magnetoelectronic coupling is presented, which is uncovered from oscillatory Hall effect response in Hall measurement. The strain gradient in a MgO (1.8 nm)/p-Si (~400 nm) freestanding sample leads to transfer of electrons (~5X10^18 cm^-3) from valence to conduction band due to flexoelectronic charge separation in the p-Si layer. The resulting flexoelectronic polarization gives rise to temporal magnetic moment from dynamical multiferroicity. The external magnetic field changes the net temporal magnetic moment, which causes modulations in charge carrier concentration and oscillatory Hall effect. The period of oscillatory Hall response is 1.12 T, which is attributed to the magnitude of temporal magnetic moment. The discovery of oscillatory Hall effect adds a new member to the family of Hall effects.

We have performed numerical calculations of a binary interacting with a gas disk, using eleven different numerical methods and a standard binary-disk setup. The goal of this study is to determine whether all codes agree on a numerically converged solution, and to determine the necessary resolution for convergence and the number of binary orbits that must be computed to reach an agreed-upon relaxed state of the binary-disk system. We find that all codes can agree on a converged solution (depending on the diagnostic being measured). The zone spacing required for most codes to reach a converged measurement of the torques applied to the binary by the disk is roughly 1% of the binary separation in the vicinity of the binary components. For our disk model to reach a relaxed state, codes must be run for at least 200 binary orbits, corresponding to about a viscous time for our parameters, $0.2 (a^2 \Omega_B /\nu)$ binary orbits, where $\nu$ is the kinematic viscosity. We did not investigate dependence on binary mass ratio, eccentricity, disk temperature, or disk viscosity; therefore, these benchmarks may act as guides towards expanding converged solutions to the wider parameter space but might need to be updated in a future study that investigates dependence on system parameters. We find the most major discrepancies between codes resulted from the dimensionality of the setup (3D vs 2D disks). Beyond this, we find good agreement in the total torque on the binary between codes, although the partition of this torque between the gravitational torque, orbital accretion torque, and spin accretion torque depends sensitively on the sink prescriptions employed. In agreement with previous studies, we find a modest difference in torques and accretion variability between 2D and 3D disk models. Predicting dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in north temperate lakes requires a comprehensive study of phenological patterns across various ecosystems, which highlights the significance of selecting phenological features and feature interactions. Process-based models are limited by partial process knowledge or oversimplified feature representations, while machine learning models face challenges in efficiently selecting relevant feature interactions for different lake types and tasks, especially under the infrequent nature of DO data collection. In this paper, we propose a Nature-Guided Cognitive Evolution (NGCE) strategy, which represents a multi-level fusion of adaptive learning with natural processes. Specifically, we utilize metabolic process-based models to generate simulated DO labels. Using these simulated labels, we implement a multi-population cognitive evolutionary search, where models, mirroring natural organisms, adaptively evolve to select relevant feature interactions within populations for different lake types and tasks. These models are not only capable of undergoing crossover and mutation mechanisms within intra-populations but also, albeit infrequently, engage in inter-population crossover. The second stage involves refining these models by retraining them with real observed labels. We have tested the performance of our NGCE strategy in predicting daily DO concentrations across a wide range of lakes in the Midwest, USA. These lakes, varying in size, depth, and trophic status, represent a broad spectrum of north temperate lakes. Our findings demonstrate that NGCE not only produces accurate predictions with few observed labels but also, through gene maps of models, reveals sophisticated phenological patterns of different lakes.

A wide range of phenomena in the natural and social sciences involve large systems of interacting particles, including plasmas, collections of galaxies, coupled oscillators, cell aggregations, and economic ``agents'. Kinetic methods for reducing the complexity of such systems typically involve the derivation of nonlinear partial differential equations for the corresponding global densities. In recent years there has been considerable interest in the mean field limit of interacting particle systems with long range interactions. Two major examples are interacting Brownian particles in the overdamped regime and the Kuramoto model of coupled phase oscillators. In this paper we analyze these systems in the presence of local or global stochastic resetting, where the position or phase of each particle independently or simultaneously resets to its original value at a random sequence of times generated by a Poisson process. In each case we derive the Dean-Kawasaki (DK) equation describing hydrodynamic fluctuations of the global density, and then use a mean field ansatz to obtain the corresponding nonlinear McKean-Vlasov (MV) equation in the thermodynamic limit. In particular, we show how the MV equation for global resetting is driven by a Poisson shot noise process, reflecting the fact that resetting is common to all of the particles and thus induces correlations that cannot be eliminated by taking a mean field limit. We then investigate the effects of local and global resetting on nonequilibrium stationary solutions of the macroscopic dynamics and, in the case of the Kuramoto model, the reduced dynamics on the Ott-Antonsen manifold., Comment: 51 pages, 12 figures
