Abstract

We have modified the single pulse target experimental facility[ ] on the Experimental Test Accelerator II (ETA-II) to perform the double pulse target experiments to validate the DARHT-II[, ] multi-pulse target concept. The 1.15 MeV, 2 kA Snowtron injector will provide the first electron pulse. The 6 MeV, 2 kA ETA-II beam will be used as the probe beam. 2. Physics Design Considerations of Diagnostic X Beam Transport System

Abstract

Diagnostic X (D-X) transport system would extract the beam from the downstream transport line of the second- axis of the Dual Axis Radiographic Hydrodynamic Test facility (DARHT-II) and transport this beam to the D-X firing point via four branches of the beamline in order to provide four lines of sight for x-ray radiography. The design goal is to generate four DARHT-II-like x-ray pulses on each line of sight. 3. Reconstruction of Initial Beam Conditions at the Exit of the DARHT II Accelerator

Abstract

We consider a technique to determine the initial beam conditions of the DARHT II Accelerator by measuring the beam size under three different magnetic transport settings. This may be time gated to resolve the parameters as a function of time within the 2000 nsec pulse. This technique leads to three equations in three unknowns with solution giving the accelerator exit beam radius, tilt and emittance. We find that systematic errors cancel and so are not a problem in unfolding the initial beam conditions. Random uncorrelated shot to shot errors can be managed by one of three strategies: 1) make the transport system optically de-magnifying; 2) average over many individual shots; or 3) make the random uncorrelated shot to shot errors sufficiently small. The high power of the DARHT II beam requires that the beam transport system leading to a radius measuring apparatus be optically magnifying. This means that the shot to shot random errors must either be made small (less than about 1%) or that we average each of the three beam radius determinations over many individual shots., Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, LINAC2000 paper TUB10

Abstract

The DARHT II accelerator at LANL is preparing a series of preliminary tests at the reduced voltage of 7.8 MeV. The transport hardware between the end of the accelerator and the final target magnet was shipped to LLNL and installed on ETA II. Using the ETA II beam at 5.2 MeV we completed a set of experiments designed reduce start up time on the DARHT II experiments and run the equipment in a configuration adapted to the reduced energy. Abstract

This paper presents physics design of the DARHT-II downstream system, which consists of a diagnostic beam stop, a novel, fast, high-precision kicker system and the x-ray converter target assembly. The beamline configuration and its beam parameter acceptance, the transverse resistive wall instability modeling, the ion hose instability in the presence of the background gas, and the simulations of beam spill are discussed. We also present the target converter assembly's configuration, and the simulated x-ray spot sizes and doses based on the radiation hydrodynamics code LASNEX and the Monte Carlo radiation transport code MCNP. Abstract

The DARHT-II final focusing system consists of a solenoid and a foil, which is used to confine backstreaming ions. The separation between the converter target and the foil needs to be small to minimize the ion focusing effects. The beam spot size on the foil has to be large enough to ensure survivability of the foil while it is being struck by four high current pulses over 2 microsecond period. We have investigated several final focusing lens and focusing schemes. The simulation results of the beam spot size on the target are presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

14. VARIABLE ENERGY EXTRACTION FROM A NEGATIVE ION CYCLOTRON AND RELATED MEASUREMENTS.

Abstract

A scheme was developed for the variable energy extraction of 25 to 48 MeV protons into a common external beam transport system. The extraction is accomplished by stripping negative hydrogen ions with a thin foil. The magnetic field is held constant while the radius and azimuth of the stripping foil are chosen so that the trajectories for any energy cross at a common point outside the cyclotron vacuum tank. A small combination magnet placed at this crossover point bends the trajectories into a common beam transport system. The first order ion optic matrix representing the fringing field of the cyclotron was calculated at five different energies. An ion optic calculation of the beam transport system is given for two different phase space vectors at the stripper. Comparison is made with the observed operating values. (Author)
