BackgroundThe Recipient Epidemiology and Donor Evaluation Study-IV-Pediatric (REDS-IV-P) Epidemiology, Surveillance and Preparedness of the Novel SARS-CoV-2 Epidemic (RESPONSE) seroprevalence study conducted monthly cross-sectional testing for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) antibodies in blood donors in 6 US metropolitan regions to estimate the extent of SARS-CoV-2 infections over time.MethodsDuring March-August 2020, approximately ≥1000 serum specimens were collected monthly from each region and tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies using a well-validated algorithm. Abstract

We present results from a study of the nonlinear intermodal coupling between different flexural vibrational modes of a single high-stress, doubly-clamped silicon nitride nanomechanical beam. The measurements were carried out at 100 mK and the beam was actuated using the magnetomotive technique. We observed the nonlinear behavior of the modes individually and also measured the coupling between them by driving the beam at multiple frequencies. We demonstrate that the different modes of the resonator are coupled to each other by the displacement induced tension in the beam, which also leads to the well known Duffing nonlinearity in doubly-clamped beams., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We present measurements of the dissipation and frequency shift in nanomechanical gold resonators at temperatures down to 10 mK. The resonators were fabricated as doubly-clamped beams above a GaAs substrate and actuated magnetomotively. Measurements on beams with frequencies 7.95 MHz and 3.87 MHz revealed that from 30 mK to 500 mK the dissipation increases with temperature as $T^{0.5}$, with saturation occurring at higher temperatures. The relative frequency shift of the resonators increases logarithmically with temperature up to at least 400 mK. Similarities with the behavior of bulk amorphous solids suggest that the dissipation in our resonators is dominated by two-level systems.

20. The Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory: A Validity Study.

Abstract

The Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (SWAI) developed by J. F. Efstation, M. J. Patton, and C. M. Kardash (1990) was further evaluated for its psychometric properties and relationships with the Personal Reactions Scale--Revised (PRS-R) developed by E. L. Holloway and B. E. Wampold (1984), the only other measure of the relationship in counselor supervision. The original factor structure of the SWAI was replicated on a sample considerably different from the one reported in the initial study. A sample of 65 supervisors (34 males and 31 females) and 88 trainees (20 males and 68 females) from university staffs returned completed instruments, which were supplemented by data for an additional 30 supervisors and 30 trainees from a university counseling center. Results suggest the suitability of the SWAI for use with participants of differing backgrounds and experiences. Correlations with the PRS-R indicate that the SWAI measures the supervisory relationship over more dimensions than the PRS-R, most notably focusing on trainees' understanding of clients. Abstract

The UK Critical Minerals Strategy (BEIS, 2022) includes a commitment to “begin a nationalscale assessment of the critical minerals within the UK. By March 2023, we will collate geoscientific data and identify target areas of potential”. This report provides that national-scale assessment of the geological potential for critical raw materials in the UK. It represents the published output of a study, jointly funded by the British Geological Survey and the Department for Business and Trade, which reviewed available geoscientific data in order to identify areas of potential geological prospectivity for critical raw materials in the UK. Critical raw materials (CRMs) are those mineral commodities that are both economically important and at risk of supply disruption. The commodities addressed in this report are those identified as critical to the UK by the Critical Minerals Intelligence Centre (CMIC) (Lusty et al., 2021). These CRMs are currently obtained from mining across the world, but at the time of writing none are produced in the UK, although tungsten has been mined in recent years. Some CRMs such as lithium, tin and graphite are typically the primary products of mines, whereas others are produced as co- or by-products of major commodities such as gold, copper or zinc. Current understanding of the UK’s mineral resource endowment rests largely on evidence from historic mining and exploration, together with targeted academic research. The UK has an extensive history of mining that dates to prehistoric times. Gold, barite, fluorite, gypsum, potash and polyhalite are among the commodities that are currently mined, and exploration for many raw materials is occurring across the whole of the UK. 35. Use of Web-Based Student Extension Publications to Improve Undergraduate Student Writing Skills

Abstract

Increased opportunities for undergraduate students in agricultural and natural resource disciplines to write for diverse audiences besides their instructor may increase motivation to write and improve student writing skills. The objectives of this teaching research were to determine and compare the initial writing experience of students enrolled in introductory and more advanced level soil science courses, develop a writing assignment that uses an agricultural extension style to improve student writing skills and consideration of their target audience, create a method using web-based technology to facilitate posting, reading, and student evaluation of the written materials, and evaluate the success of the approach using student evaluations of the assignment and the course from both the introductory and advanced students. Initial surveys of students in an introductory soils course and a more advanced soil fertility course at the University of Missouri in Columbia (UMC) during 2005 and 2006 indicated that undergraduate students have limited science writing experience as beginning students and they develop greater awareness of the need for more science writing experience as they progress in their undergraduate education. In addition, most of the undergraduate students surveyed in this research had limited experience writing a publication for an audience other than their instructor. The students recognized publication for different audiences as an effective tool to make them write more carefully and clearly and also as a way to provide them with more self esteem as science writers. A writing assignment was developed for students in the UMC soil fertility course in 2005 and 2006 to prepare short extension documents regarding the properties and management of essential plant nutrient elements with the students in the introductory soils course being their target audience. These texts were organized into a secure website using WebCT, a web-based course management software. This website allowed the introductory students to read each text and then provide their evaluations by responding to a short six question survey using the online quizzes and survey tool in WebCT. The ratings and comments of the introductory students were then returned to the original student authors of each text to provide them with feedback regarding the effectiveness of their writing. Some difficulties in coordination of the assignments between the two courses caused an undesirable delay between the completion of the student publication and when the feedback of the student audience was returned, which may have reduced the effectiveness of the assignment in raising awareness of writing for an audience. Student evaluations of the impact of this writing assignment and the subsequent evaluation exercise indicated some success in improving students' ability to evaluate scientific writing, but their exposure to this publication apparently did not stimulate increased interest in soil science or in additional interchange with advanced students through formal written communication. Further use of formal and informal written communication through web-based tools, such as bulletin boards and chat rooms, and other means of written communication that cross institutional, disciplinary, and geographical boundaries may enhance student learning, improve written communication skills, and enlarge and diversify the audiences to which students communicate and receive feedback. This reviewed current global activities, research and policy leading to the identification of the key issues related to CRM resource management and the sustainability of supply. This review provided the basis for the formulation of a series of recommendation in this study.

48. New perspectives of turbulent flame structure via CH PLIF in prevaporized liquid fuels

Abstract

This effort investigates flame topology, curvature, and flame surface density (FSD) measurements, using CH planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) in prevaporized, premixed liquid fuel jet flames. A McKenna burner with a central jet port, fueled by methane, n-heptane, and n-dodecane is utilized in these experiments, using the flat flame as a methane-air pilot to maintain the stabilization of the jet flame. The measurements were conducted at Re = 10,000 at equivalence ratios of 0.8, 1, and 1.2. CH PLIF experiments were performed using the C-X band with excitation and fluorescence near 314 nm. A novel image processing methodology has been developed to capture flame structure and identify the product and reactant side of observed CH contours. This method allows for the determination of the sign of curvature to calculate curvature statistics and distributions for all cases studied. The effect of non-unity Le number is examined by analyzing fluorescence signal-curvature correlations for heavy hydrocarbon fuels compared to methane cases. The correlation reveals a relationship between the curvature of liquid fuel flames and CH fluorescence signals, particularly in high negative curvature regions. The signal-curvature correlation is stronger for larger Le fuels. In addition, the flame images are binarized to obtain a map of the average progress variable contours and flame surface density. Compared to OH PLIF, where the product and reactant sides are oriented and distinguished, CH PLIF requires more detailed binarization and side detection processing due to flame fragmentation and local extinctions. Observations of simultaneous OH-CH PLIF in these flames often show layers of extinguished CH while localized OH signal remains, which suggests the imaging of OH alone may not capture in-plane extinction and may lead to an over-prediction of flame surface density. Estimates of this over-prediction are determined by calculating flame surface density using artificially connected edges where a local extinction in CH images has occurred to simulate results from pseudo-OH PLIF imaging. Furthermore, the flame surface density, conditioned on local progress variable, is calculated for all cases comparing the effects of fueling, and equivalence ratio. Lastly, to determine potential differences in imaging methodologies between the CH PLIF and OH PLIF, the flame surface density is measured for pseudo-OH PLIF and is compared to the CH PLIF derived measurements.

49. Non-unity Lewis Number Effects on Curvature Statistics in Prevaporized, Turbulent Liquid Fuel Jet Flames: Curvature Calculation Methodology

Abstract

A new image processing technique with topology tracking is introduced to calculate curvature statistics as extracted by CH radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) measurements. The aim is to develop a capability to investigate non-unity Lewis number (Le ≠ 1) effects on curvature statistics and distributions in prevaporized, turbulent liquid fuel jet flames. Such flames typically exhibit significant levels of local extinction, so that the ability to determine the curvature sign from CH layer information is non-trivial if based only on the orientation of the CH layer relative to the reactant stream. This study proposes a simple topology tracking technique that allows for the calculation of curvature statistics on isolated reaction zones, classified based on pre-determined topology arguments. Binarized CH PLIF images are first utilized to distinguish between reaction zones and holes, pockets, or small isolated patches, which are generally not expected to alter curvature statistics. Consequently, a skeletonized model of the remaining reaction zones is employed and combined with the zone boundaries to assign each point of the reaction zone edge to the reactants or products stream. The latter allows for the correct sign and probability density functions of curvature to be evaluated. In this direction, curvature statistics are calculated here for a representative dataset of three prevaporized liquid fuel jet flames with Re = 10,000, equivalence ratio of 1.2, and a preheat temperature of 470 K. This work presents the first statistical curvature study using CH PLIF exclusively for liquid fuels.
