This paper is a short survey of the work of Ignacy Sachs - one of the pioneers of structuralist development economics and an outstanding economist dedicated to environmental economics. Sachs is Polish and a disciple of Michael Kalecki, but he is also a Brazilian and a French, given his strong ties with these two countries. He knows the importance of markets in the coordination of the economy, but, as a developmental economist, he attributes a key role to economic planning. Only through the deliberate action of the state it will be possible to achieve economic growth, reduction of inequalities, and protection of the environments - only through deliberate action way men and women will be able to conduct the Spaceship Earth to economic, social and environmental development and assure a decent work to all.

This study presents a case study of asynchronous online discussions’ (AOD) growth patterns in an undergraduate blended course to address the gap in our current understanding of how threads are developed in peer-moderated AODs. Building on a taxonomy of thread pattern proposed by Chan, Hew and Cheung (2009), growth patterns of thirty-six forums were explored on three patterns: Short Thread Pattern (SHTP), Extended Thread Pattern (ETP), and Split Thread Pattern (STP). The impact of peer moderating supports on thread growth was also investigated. Types of peer moderators’ supports were explored utilizing a coding scheme from Smet, Keer, Wever, and Valcke’s (2010) study. STP pattern was found to be more common than the other patterns with 74 (37.94%) out of 195 threaded discussions growing on it. The results also showed that, compared to SHTP, in both STP and ETP the occurrences of ‘Information exchange’ and ‘Knowledge construction’ supports appeared to be more, while the presences of supports stimulating ‘Development’, ‘Access and motivation’ and ‘Socialization’ were less. Furthermore, the use of ‘Access and motivation’ and ‘Socialization’ supports appeared to enhance early thread termination when used individually. Thread continuity was reinforced by the use of ‘Knowledge construction’ support with other moderating supports.

This paper presents the economic development of Guyana, from several novel analytic technical perspectives. The development spans three dominant regimes in Guyana, starting just before its independence from Great Britain in 1966. The country has moved from a colonial type of development strategy to a modified socialist system and returned to a capitalist approach over the last 40 years. New paradigms such as information theory, game theory, convergence theory, and cross-border analysis have improved our insights into economic development through improvement of classical and neoclassical equilibrium models. However, rather than using the traditional equilibrium model, we will, through a rivalry hypothesis, examine patterns of behavior among Guyana's sectors and its external trading partners for the different regimes. We will also point out anomaly in the behavior of the service sector, unjustified inverted leader-follower relationship among trading partners, unheeded signaling of information from cross-border financial ratios and overlooked implications of non-convergence. We believe that the results of this case study will enhance our understanding of the development process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite the extensive research demonstrating the importance of child executive functioning (EF) for school adjustment, little longitudinal work has formally examined developmental change in EF during the early school years. Based on a sample of 106 mother–child dyads, the current longitudinal study investigated patterns of growth in child performance on three executive tasks between kindergarten (Mage = 6 years) and Grade 3 (Mage = 9 years), and the predictive role of earlier mother–child attachment security in these patterns. The results suggest that early elementary school is a period of significant developmental improvement in child EF, although child performance on different EF tasks follows distinct trajectories across time. The study also provides evidence for a sustained relation between children's early attachment security and their ongoing acquisition of executive skills.

Abstract: Aims. – The present study was conducted to examine (i) prenatal and postnatal patterns of growth in relation to the risk of later mental health problems in children and (ii) the possible mediating effect of these patterns of growth in the association between parental socioeconomic status (SES) and children’s mental health. Subjects and methods. – The present study is part of a blinded, matched case control study, involving a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from routine examinations at community health services for children and adolescents. The sample comprised 80 patients, referred between the age of 6–13 years to the Community Mental Health Centre in Maastricht, and 320 matched population controls. Results. – Children coming from unemployed families weighed less at birth, but postnatal growth was not associated with this or other indicators of SES. Although children using mental health care were somewhat smaller at birth, there was no evidence that leanness during childhood was a risk factor for the development of mental health problems. Conclusions. – The present results showed some evidence for the impact of intrauterine development on children’s mental health problems. In addition, neither prenatal nor postnatal physical growth were on the pathway between parental SES and children’s mental health problems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

- Abstract
The 1950s represent a major turning point in Louis Kahn’s career; a time in which his determination to comprehend Architecture’s quintessence led to the formulation of a series of decisive transformations in the conception of order and modernist space. His intuitions about the autonomous and indivisible condition of the ‘room’, based on the intimate agreement between the envelope and its structure, entwined with a simultaneous interest in the growth processes of forms, partly influenced by key figures in the North American context such as Buckminster Fuller and Robert Le Ricolais, and above all due to his intense collaboration with Anne Tyng. The evolution of the design for the Trenton Jewish Community Center can be regarded as paradigmatic of this junction of interests. Through it one can see how the transition from a ‘cellular’ layout of organic appearance to a regular chequered plan with classical connotations is naturally assumed. The main purpose of this article is to shed new light on the reasons for such changeover. It therefore proposes to recreate the hypothetical creative process of the architect, by re-drafting the different versions of the design, searching to reveal the key episodes within the decision-making process, such as the debate established between Kahn and Colin Rowe following the latter’s visit to Philadelphia, which may have prompted a radical change in the proposed arrangement model, Los años cincuenta constituyen un punto de inflexión determinante en la carrera de Louis I. Kahn; un momento en el que su ambición por comprender el origen mismo de la arquitectura le llevó a plantear una serie de trasformaciones decisivas en la concepción del orden y el espacio moderno.

The Report on Supervised Teaching Practice II, associated with the PES II Course Unit, of the Master in Pre-school Education, is subdivided into three parts. The first part of the document refers to the characterization of the educational context, the second describes the case of study and the last part presents a reflection on the Supervised Teaching Practice. The study falls within the domain of Mathematics and aims to understand how 4-6 year-olds solve tasks that involve the exploration of patterns. Based on this problem, the following research questions emerged: 1) What strategies are used by children in solving the presented tasks?; 2) What difficulties children have in solving the presented tasks? The study was framed in a constructivist paradigm, in a methodology of a qualitative nature, with a case study design and was carried out with the group of children in the context of PES II. There before, different techniques of data collection were used: participant observation, documentary analysis, audio and video recordings and photographic records. In relation to the didactic proposal, a sequence of six tasks was prepared, four involving repetition patterns and two involving growth patterns. The analysis of the data shows that the majority of the group was able to successfully carry out the proposals applying several strategies, such as the identification of the repetition unit, the verbalization and in the case of growth patterns - the recursive strategy. The most obvious difficulties emerged in the variants of continuing a sequence to the left and completing a sequence. The greatest difficulty was observed in the last task which implied a pattern of growth because it was the first time they had contact with this type of structure.

This Internship Report presents all the work done over the course Supervised Practice in Preschool Education and the 1st cycle of basic education. The educational activity took place in a children room between 3 and 6 years old in kindergarten number 2 – Quinta das Violetas and a class of 4th grade at Boa Esperança Primary School, both in Castelo Branco. This work is divided into seven chapters: Introduction, Supervised Practice Teaching, Literature Review, Methodology, Analysis and Data Treatment, Conclusions/Limitations/ Recommendations and Bibliography. The theme in the analysis of this research was the development of algebraic thinking by conducting research tasks involving the exploration of patterns of growth in a sample formed by a group of six students entered the class of 4th grade of Primary School 1st Cycle Boa Esperança, and of these students, three showed a tendency for weaker results and three others were likely to get better results in the discipline of mathematics. We sought to determine whether the six students, when faced with tasks investigative content, were able to find/discover the existence of the pattern of growth and the strategies used that allowed them to come to resolution, without the prior learning of a rule. The definition of specific objectives that are intended to achieve: to analyze the algebraic thinking of the students (who had good results and lower mathematics) prior to our intervention; analyze the algebraic thinking of the students (who had good results mathematics and who had lower scores) after our intervention and assess student learning as a result of the proposed activities. This study followed the principle methodology essentially qualitative in nature in the form of action inquiry. Initially the first research tasks for each set of students to class without learning any kind of rule or strategy were presented. These were taken home, corrected and analyzed for the following day, being addressed in the classroom with all students, where the teacher assumed the role of resolver model and showed a strategy/resolution rule. Students solved another research task with similar-themed content and apply the same procedure. In total, nine students solve mathematical investigation tasks divided into three sets with the same thematic content. Data collection consisted of the assignment sheets (which allowed collecting as many data as possible), observation, field notes and in dialogue with the students. The results shown by the students were treated and analyzed by applying the Holistic Scale Focused Charles, Lester & O'Daffer (1987). Through the analysis of the results obtained by students when resolving concludes that throughout their achievement students did not show benefited from the joint exploitation of various strategies that can be used to perform tasks such tasks.
