Currently, only a very small percentage of textiles is recycled; the majority is incinerated or sent to landfill. Due to the advancing climate change, the responsible use of available resources is becoming more important than ever. The process of rethinking begins in product development with the selection of raw materials. In the project “CannaReWool” (EFRE-0802000), German hemp and pure recycled wool are blended, spun and knitted into fabrics. The aim of the project is to produce knitted fabrics that can be recycled in a closed loop due to their novel combination of materials. The aim is to determine the most suitable settings and spinning components to ensure a stable rotor spinning process. The evaluation is based on the number of yarn breaks per rotor hour. The trials are carried out on the Schlafhorst Autocoro 480 rotor spinning machine. As both fibers, hemp and recycled wool, are very short and lack fiber to fiber cohesion, it becomes apparent that no settings can be found that give the spinning process sufficient stability. The results of the Uster Tester 6 and the Textechno Statimat tests show that the yarns contain a high amount of imperfections and the tensile strength values are low. Nonetheless the yarn is successfully knitted into fabrics on a Stoll ADF flat knitting machine. In the course of the project, the knitting trials will be continued and areas of application for the fabrics will be determined.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is a non-invasive technology that provides information on biochemical tissue properties, including skin oxygenation and perfusion quality. Microcirculatory alterations are associated with organ dysfunction in septic COVID-19 patients. This prospective observational study investigated associations between skin HSI and organ dysfunction severity in critically ill COVID-19 patients. During the first seven days in the ICU, palmar HSI measurements were carried out with the TIVITA® tissue system. We report data from 52 critically ill COVID-19 patients, of whom 40 required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). HSI parameters for superficial tissue oxygenation (StO2) and oxygenation and perfusion quality (NPI) were persistently decreased. Hemoglobin tissue content (THI) increased, and tissue water content (TWI) was persistently elevated. Regression analysis showed strong indications for an association of NPI and weaker indications for associations of StO2, THI, and TWI with sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scoring. StO2 and NPI demonstrated negative associations with vasopressor support and lactate levels as well as positive associations with arterial oxygen saturation. These results suggest that skin HSI provides clinically relevant information, opening new perspectives for microcirculatory monitoring in critical care.

Background: It is widely accepted that SARS-CoV-2 causes a dysregulation of immune and coagulation processes. In severely affected patients, viral sepsis may result in life endangering multiple organ dysfunction. Furthermore, most therapies for COVID-19 patients target either the immune system or coagulation processes. As the exact mechanism causing SARS-CoV-2-induced morbidity and mortality was unknown, we started an in-depth analysis of immunologic and coagulation processes. Methods: 127 COVID-19 patients were treated at the University Hospital Essen, Germany, between May 2020 and February 2022. Patients were divided according to their maximum COVID-19 WHO ordinal severity score (WHO 0–10) into hospitalized patients with a non-severe course of disease (WHO 4–5, n = 52) and those with a severe course of disease (WHO 6–10, n = 75). Non-infected individuals served as healthy controls (WHO 0, n = 42). Blood was analyzed with respect to cell numbers, clotting factors, as well as pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators in plasma. As functional parameters, phagocytosis and inflammatory responses to LPS and antigen-specific stimulation were determined in monocytes, granulocytes, and T cells using flow cytometry. Findings: In the present study, immune and coagulation systems were analyzed simultaneously. Interestingly, many severe COVID-19 patients showed an upregulation of pro-inflammatory mediators and at the same time clear signs of immunosuppression. Furthermore, severe COVID-19 patients not only exhibited a disturbed immune system, but in addition showed a pronounced pro-coagulation phenotype with impaired fibrinolysis. Therefore, our study adds another puzzle piece to the already complex picture of COVID-19 pathology implying that therapies in COVID-19 must be individualized. Conclusion: Despite years of research, COVID-19 has not been understood completely and still no therapies exist, fitting all requirements and phases of COVID-19 disease. This observation is highly reminiscent to sepsis. Research in sepsis has been going on for decades, while the disease is still not completely understood and therapies fitting all patients are lacking as well. In both septic and COVID-19 patients, immune activation can be accompanied by immune paralysis, complicating therapeutic intervention. Accordingly, therapies that lower immune activation may cause detrimental effects in patients, who are immune paralyzed by viral infections or sepsis. We therefore suggest individualizing therapies and to broaden the spectrum of immunological parameters analyzed before therapy. Only if the immune status of a patient is understood, can a therapeutic intervention be successful.

This article contributes to the broadening agenda of critical globalisation(s) research by analysing one of the most fundamental ideological foundations of the current global transformation in a historical perspective: the ideology of "domination over nature" that was implemented in Europe from 1500 onwards. Humans have always shaped and altered their environment according to their needs and aspirations. However, it is the distinct ideology of mastery and domination over nature that underlines this unprecedented enterprise. An ideology in this context is understood as a codified justification for social practices, codified in concrete as well as highly abstract systems of rule. The question I seek to answer in this contribution is why Europe – a backward civilisation up to the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance – was the birthplace of the distinct ideology of mastery over nature, globalising itself through exploration, discovery, and trade to nearly every corner of the planet. Protected areas are frequently used as an important governance approach for biodiversity conservation. Even though the total area of protected areas has increased over time, the coverage, quality of management and effectiveness of these areas are still suboptimal. A large body of literature identifies four main challenges that limit the effectiveness of protected areas: lack of stakeholder participation, insufficient organisational capacity to enforce rules, poor integration across social and ecological goals, and underdeveloped accountability mechanisms for assessing management procedures. To address these challenges, scholars and policymakers increasingly debate how to foster an integrated, inclusive, and transparent "whole of society" approach to conservation. We contribute to this debate by examining the role of international cooperative initiatives (ICIs), involving non-state and subnational actors operating across national borders to steer society towards a common goal. We identify 20 ICIs that work on protected areas and analyse their potential to address the four main challenges identified in protected areas, by examining their actor constellation, governance functions, goal alignment, and monitoring and reporting mechanisms. We find that ICIs working on protected areas have the potential to directly address challenges in protected areas related to lack of capacity and accountability mechanisms, and indirectly address challenges related to lack of participation and integration across goals. We discuss these findings in relation to scholarly debates in the global environmental governance and protected areas literature respectively, as well as, to policy debates over the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework within the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). • We identify 20 international cooperative initiatives (ICIs) working on protected areas. • These ICIs can directly and indirectly address key challenges in protected areas. • They are mostly civil society and public-led and engaged in information sharing. • Their goals are well-aligned with global objectives on conservation and sustainable use.
