The article discusses the prospects for the development of piggyback transportation on domestic railways. The authors study the multimodal technology of piggyback transportation, new for Russia, the experience of its development on domestic railways, analyze its potential opportunities for the Russian transport infrastructure and existing obstacles to its development. The existing experience shows that in order to carry out its activities in the segment of the transport market, which can provide the high priority choice of vehicles, the railway carrier needs to develop mixed - multimodal transportation (road-rail). One of the areas of cooperation is the development of piggyback transportation. For ideal functioning of the piggyback transportation system, it is necessary to create conditions on domestic railways under which the work of all participants in the logistics chain – carriers, cargo owners, logistics intermediaries - will be optimized. For a railway carrier, the development of piggyback transportation is beneficial due to increasing the volume of transportation and, accordingly, due to obtaining additional profit, while for automobile carriers and cargo owners who previously used the services of road transport, this project will be interesting only if the cost of cargo delivery is reduced. The organization of regular piggyback transportation on Russian railways is a promising direction for the development of the transport and logistics services market. Currently, there is every reason to believe that the domestic transport complex is ready for the development of intermodal, piggyback transportation as an example of interaction between a railway and an automobile carrier.
