This study describes and discusses the results of a 14 month-long campaign (April 2019 to June 2020) aimed at characterizing and quantifying the influence of environmental factors (cosmic rays, rainfall events, soil moisture and atmospheric radon) on airborne radiometric surveys, which are used for mapping the concentrations of potassium (K), uranium (U) and thorium (Th), or for monitoring the natural radioactivity in the environment. A large NaI(Tl) airborne spectrometer (4 down + 1 up detectors of 4 L) was installed at a height of 50 m on a meteorological tower to simulate an airborne hover at the Pyrenean Platform for Observation of the Atmosphere (P2OA) in Lannemezan. The continuous, high frequency acquisition of gamma-rays was accompanied by measurements of rainfall intensity, soil moisture content, atmospheric radon activity and meteorological parameters. A semi-diurnal cycle of apparent 232Th and 40K was observed and explained by atmospheric thermal tides. Both diurnal and seasonal cycles are also evident in the gamma-ray signal, mostly due to variations of soil moisture at these timescales with a maximum during summer when surface soil moisture (0–5 cm depth) is the lowest. An increase of 25% vol. of the soil moisture content, representing the range of variation between the end of summer (18% vol.) and the beginning of spring (43% vol.) leads to a decrease of gamma-rays in the K and Th window by the same amount. Conversely, these results illustrate the potential of using airborne gamma-ray spectrometry to monitor soil moisture at hectometer scales. The washout of radon-222 progeny during rainfall events influences the count of gamma-rays in the U window by adding an atmospheric component to the soil component. The amplitude of the signal increase in the U window varies with the precipitation rate and reaches 30% for an average event. By clear weather, atmospheric radon-222 volumic activity influences the count rate in the U window by about ±3.8% per Bq m−3, which translates into an influence of 148%/Bq m−3/kg Bq−1 (U). This comprehensive, multi-compartment approach is necessary to optimize and improve the processing and analysis of airborne gamma-ray spectrometry data for high sensitivity environmental studies. These results show the importance of environmental factors on the variability of gamma-ray spectrometry and the importance of taking them into account to accurately map radionuclides activities.

Radon ( 222 Rn), a radioactive gas with a half-life of 3.82 days, is continuously emanated from soil, rocks, and water by the radioactive decay of 226 Ra. Radon-222 is released from the ground into the atmosphere, where it is transported mainly by turbulent diffusion or convection. For precise measurement of radon-222 atoms in the atmosphere, the detectors typically used present a small volume or surface area and are therefore not very sensitive, especially for online measurements and short sample intervals ( 3 h −1 ). The radon-222 concentration is increased instantaneously by at least a factor of 30 across the HiSRA system. Therefore, in this study, when coupling to an ionization chamber (AlphaGUARDTM) at the outlet of the HiSRA system, the detection limit of the overall system is multiplied by factor of 30 and induces a new LD for a radon 222 gas analyzer lower than 1 Bq m −3 for an integrating time of 10 min and 0.1 Bq m −3 for 1 h. We constructed one radon amplifier prototype that provided the preliminary results for amplification efficiency and the initial measurements presented herein.

International audience; La Soufrière of Guadeloupe is an active volcano of Lesser Antilles that is closely monitored due to a high eruptive hazard potential. Since 1992 it exhibits a medium-level but sustained background hydrothermal activity with low-energy and shallow seismicity, hot springs temperature increase and high flux acidic gas fumaroles at the summit. The problem of estimating the heat balance and quantifying the evolution of hydrothermal activity has become a key challenge for surveillance. This work is the first attempt of a global mapping and quantification of La Soufrière thermal activity performed in February 2010 using aerial thermal infrared imagery. After instrument calibration and data processing, we present a global map of thermal anomalies allowing to spot the main active sites: the summit area (including the fumaroles of Tarissan Pit and South Crater), the Ty Fault fumarolic zone, and the hot springs located at the vicinity of the dome. In a second step, we deduce the mass and the energy fluxes released by the volcano. In particular, we propose a simple model of energy balance to estimate the mass flux of the summit fumaroles from their brightness temperature and size. In February 2010, Tarissan Pit had a 22.8 ± 8.1 kg s -1 flux (1970 ± 704 tons day -1), while South Crater vents had a total of 19.5 ± 4.0 kg s -1 (1687 ± 348 tons day -1). Once converted into energy flux, summit fumaroles represent 98% of the 106 ± 30 MW released by the volcano, the 2% remaining being split between the hot springs and the thermal anomalies at the summit and at the Ty Fault fumarolic zone. These values are in the high range of the previous estimations, highlighting the short-term variability of the expelled fluxes. Such a heat flux requires the cooling of 1500 m 3 of magma per day, in good agreement with previous geochemical studies.

International audience; Effective radium-226 concentration ( EC Ra) has been measured in soil samples from seven horizontal and vertical profiles of terrace scarps in the northern part of Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The samples belong to the Thimi, Gokarna, and Tokha Formations, dated from 50 to 14 ky BP, and represent a diverse fluvio-deltaic sedimentary facies mainly consisting of gravelly to coarse sands, black, orange and brown clays. EC Ra was measured in the laboratory by radon-222 emanation. The samples ( n = 177) are placed in air-tight glass containers, from which, after an accumulation time varying from 3 to 18 days, the concentration of radon-222, radioactive decay product of radium-226 and radioactive gas with a half-life of 3.8 days, is measured using scintillation flasks. The EC Ra values from the seven different profiles of the terrace deposits vary from 0.4 to 43 Bq kg -1, with profile averages ranging from 12 ± 1 to 27 ± 2 Bq kg -1. The values have a remarkable consistency along a particular horizon of sediment layers, clearly demonstrating that these values can be used for long distance correlations of the sediment horizons. Widely separated sediment profiles, representing similar stratigraphic positions, exhibit consistent EC Ra values in corresponding stratigraphic sediment layers. EC Ra measurements therefore appear particularly useful for lithologic and stratigraphic discriminations. For comparison, EC Ra values of soils from different localities having various sources of origin were also obtained: 9.2 ± 0.4 Bq kg -1 in soils of Syabru-Bensi (Central Nepal), 23 ± 1 Bq kg -1 in red residual soils of the Bhattar-Trisuli Bazar terrace (North of Kathmandu), 17.1 ± 0.3 Bq kg -1 in red residual soils of terrace of Kalikasthan (North of Trisuli Bazar) and 10 ± 1 Bq kg -1 in red residual soils of a site near Nagarkot (East of Kathmandu). The knowledge of EC Ra values for these various soils is important for modelling radon exhalation at the ground surface, in particular in the vicinity of active faults. Importantly, the study also reveals that, above numerous sediments of Kathmandu Valley, radon concentration in dwellings can potentially exceed the level of 300 Bq m -3 for residential areas; a fact that should be seriously taken into account by the governmental and non-governmental agencies as well as building authorities.

Pressure-induced temperature (PIT) variations are systematically observed in the atmosphere of underground cavities. Such PIT variations are due to the compressibility of the air, damped by heat exchange with the rock surface. It is important to characterize such processes for numerous applications, such as the preservation of painted caves or the assessment of the long-term stability of underground laboratories and underground waste repositories. In this paper we thoroughly study the spatiotemporal dependence of the PIT response versus frequency using vertical and horizontal profiles of temperature installed in an abandoned underground quarry located in Vincennes, near Paris. The PIT response varies from about 20 × 10−3°C hPa−1 at a frequency of 2 × 10−4 Hz to 2–3 × 10−3°C hPa−1 at a frequency of one cycle per day. An analytical expression based on a simple heat exchange model accounts for the observed features of the PIT response and allows for correcting the measured time series, having standard deviations of about 10−2°C, to residual variations with a standard deviation of about 2 × 10−3°C. However, a frequency-dependent attenuation of the response, corresponding to a reduction in amplitude with a factor varying from 2 to 3, is observed near the walls. This effect is not included in the simple analytical expression, but it can be accounted for by a one-dimensional differential equation, solved numerically, where temperature variations in the atmosphere are damped by an effective radiative coupling with the rock surface, complemented by a diffusive coupling near the walls. The TIP response is observed to remain stable over several years, but a large transient enhancement of about a factor of two is observed near the roof at one location from July to October 2005. In a cavity located below the Paris Observatory, an additional contribution is identified in the PIT response function versus frequency for frequencies smaller than 2 × 10−5 Hz. This contribution can be described using a modified analytical expression that includes the effect of heat diffusion into the surrounding rock. Using this expression, in this case also, the temperature time series can then be corrected, giving a residual standard deviation smaller than 1.6 × 10−3°C. Transient temporal variations of the PIT response are observed in all sites, with possible nonlinear components in the PIT. Such effects are not properly understood at this stage, and limit the reduction of time series to standard deviations of the order of 2 × 10−3°C, and consequently limit the search for new transient or seasonal temperature signals, for example due to the presence of tiny heat sources in the cavity or to geodynamical effects.

Soil temperature and gas (CO2 concentration and flux) have been investigated at Merapi volcano (Indonesia) during two inter-eruptive periods (2002 and 2007). Precise imaging of the summit crater and the spatial pattern of diffuse degassing along a gas traverse on the southern slope are interpreted in terms of summit structure and major caldera organization. The summit area is characterized by decreasing CO2 concentrations with distance from the 1932 crater rim, down to atmospheric levels at the base of the terminal cone. Similar patterns are measured on any transect down the slopes of the cone. The spatial distribution of soil gas anomalies suggests that soil degassing is controlled by structures identified as concentric historical caldera rims (1932, 1872, and 1768), which have undergone severe hydrothermal self-sealing processes that dramatically lower the permeability and porosity of soils. Temperature and CO2 flux measurements in soils near the dome display heterogeneous distributions which are consistent with a fracture network identified by previous geophysical studies. These data support the idea that the summit is made of isolated and mobile blocks, whose boundaries are either sealed by depositional processes or used as pathways for significant soil degassing. Within this context, self-sealing both prevents long-distance soil degassing and controls heat and volatile transfers near the dome. A rough estimate of the CO2 output through soils near the dome is 200–230 t day−1, i.e. 50% of the estimated total gas output from the volcano summit during these quiescent periods. On Merapi’s southern slope, a 2,500 m long CO2 traverse shows low-amplitude anomalies that fit well with a recently observed electromagnetic anomaly, consistent with a faulted structure related to an ancient avalanche caldera rim. Sub-surface soil permeability is the key parameter that controls the transfer of heat and volatiles within the volcano, allowing its major tectonic architecture to be revealed by soil gas and soil temperature surveys.

International audience; Gas discharges have been identified at the Syabru–Bensi hot springs, located at the front of the High Himalaya in Central Nepal, in the Main Central Thrust zone. The hot spring waters are characterized by a temperature reaching 61 °C, high salinity, high alkalinity and δ13C varying from + 0.7‰ to + 4.8‰. The gas is mainly dry carbon dioxide, with a δ13C of − 0.8‰. The diffuse carbon dioxide flux, mapped by the accumulation chamber method, reached a value of 19 000 g m− 2day− 1, which is comparable with values measured on active volcanoes. Similar values have been observed over a two-year time interval and the integral around the main gas discharge amounts to 0.25 ± 0.07 mol s− 1, or 350 ± 100 ton a− 1. The mean radon-222 concentration in spring water did not exceed 2.5 Bq L− 1, exponentially decreasing with water temperature. In contrast, in gas bubbles collected in the water or in the dry gas discharges, the radon concentration varied from 16 000 to 41 000 Bq m− 3. In the soil, radon concentration varied from 25 000 to more than 50 000 Bq m− 3. Radon flux, measured at more than fifty points, reached extreme values, larger than 2 Bq m− 2s− 1, correlated to the larger values of the carbon dioxide flux. Our direct observation confirms previous studies which indicated large degassing in the Himalaya. The proposed understanding is that carbon dioxide is released at mid-crustal depth by metamorphic reactions within the Indian basement, transported along pre-existing faults by meteoric hot water circulation, and degassed before reaching surface. This work, first, confirms that further studies should be undertaken to better constrain the carbon budget of the Himalaya, and, more generally, the contribution of mountain building to the global carbon balance. Furthermore, the evidenced gas discharges provide a unique natural laboratory for methodological studies, and appear particularly important to study as a function of time, especially in relation to the seismic activity. For this purpose, the observed high radon-222 flux is a particularly interesting asset. Indeed, while the relationship between radon and carbon dioxide needs to be better understood, radon measurements, using the available radon sensors, constitute a powerful tool for robust and cost effective long term monitoring.

International audience; Thermal stratification associated with thermal plumes in semi-confined and confined non-adiabatic environments has been investigated using heating experiments performed in the atmosphere of an underground quarry. A 100 W source is used during 24 h, followed by 6 days of recovery. Vertical and horizontal profiles of temperature are recorded in the atmosphere, supplemented by a vertical profile at the wall. During a heating, an equilibrium stratification is observed in the atmosphere, compatible with a filling box mechanism modified by heat exchanges with the boundaries. At the wall, an initial cooling is observed, indicating the importance of phase changes of water in the energy budget. Such experiments should improve our understanding of the effect of turbulent plumes in air, which is relevant for proper ventilation and heating of buildings, and more generally, engineering, cultural and environmental applications.

Temperature and humidity measurements have been performed since 2000 in the atmosphere of the 20-m deep vertical access pit of an underground quarry. Air avalanches take place in the pit when the outside air density is larger than the equilibrium air density of the quarry. These avalanches are associated with a mean linear vertical temperature profile, and with broad-band, spatially organized and coherent temperature fluctuations. Temperature distributions are nearly Gaussian, with a skewness smoothly varying with position. The power spectra of the fluctuations show, in the frequency range from 3 ×10-4 Hz to 4 ×10-3 Hz, an exponent varying from -0.15 at the bottom of the pit, to -0.6 at the top. Heat exchange with the walls accounts for the mean temperature profile, and contributes to the power spectra for periods smaller than about 20 minutes. Vertical cross-correlations provide estimates of velocities and indicate quasi-stable polarization of the direction of the vertical mean flow. A horizontal vorticity index, constructed from a horizontal cross-correlation and the sign of the temperature gradient, exhibits properties of a scale-invariant process, similar to the structure of wind reversals observed in Rayleigh-Benard laboratory convection experiments or to the reversals of the geomagnetic fields. This experiment may offer a genuine realization of bulk turbulence forced by a linear temperature gradient. More generally, it provides a description of turbulent fluid dynamics in a medium-scale natural system in the presence of non-adiabatic boundaries.

The geochemical response of groundwater to external forcing is studied in a tunnel hosted in fractured gneiss near and above an artificial lake having large water level variations. Dripping waters have been monitored in two zones characterized by highly different flow rates representing different contributions of water from matrix porosity and fractures. Transient increases of sulfate and magnesium concentrations, observed in both zones, are not related to meteorology but associated with radon bursts into the tunnel air. This indicates that transient enhancement of conductance, with discharges of saline water and radon from the matrix porosity to the fractures, is a mechanism able to produce both groundwater and gas anomalies, in response to hydrogeological or mechanical processes such as increases in pore pressure or changes in crack geometry. Besides its applications to environmental issues, the proposed discharge mechanism may be relevant for the understanding of geochemical precursors of earthquakes, as an alternative to aquifer mixing.

Radon-222 activity concentration has been monitored since 1999 in an underground limestone quarry located in Vincennes, near Paris, France. It is homogeneous in summer, with an average value of 1700 Bq m(-3), and varies from 730 to 1450 Bq m(-3) in winter, indicating natural ventilation with a rate ranging from 0.5 to 2.4 x 10(-6) s(-1) (0.04-0.22 day(-1)). This hypothesis is supported by measurements in the vertical access pit where, in winter, a turbulent air current produces a stable radon profile, smoothly decreasing from 700 Bq m(-3) at 20 m depth to 300 Bq m(-3) at surface. In summer, a thermal stratification is maintained in the pit, but the radon-222 concentration jumps repeatedly between 100 and 2000 Bq m(-3). These jumps are due to atmospheric pressure pumping, which induces ventilation in the quarry at a rate of about 0.1 x 10(-6) s(-1) (0.009 day(-1)). Radon-222 monitoring thus provides a dynamical characterisation of ventilation regimes, which is important for the assessment of the long-term evolution of underground systems.

An experimental method, based on a 21-day accumulation technique, is proposed for measuring the radon-222 emanation factor in undisturbed consolidated materials. The leakage rate is determined from the form of the radon growth curve in the measurement chamber. It was comparable to the radon decay. In order to obtain the “true” radon emanation factor, the thickness of the sample must be less than the radon diffusion length in the porous material. The method was used to measure the radon emanation factor in water-saturated claystones (argillites). The radon emanation factor, determined from experiments on a rock sample with a thickness of 5 mm , was 15%, a value typical for this kind of material.

An experimental study concerning the transport of 222 Rn in uranium mill tailings (UMTs) and in the cover layer was launched in 1997 with the participation of the French uranium mining company (COGEMA). Evaluation of the cover layer’s effectiveness in reducing 222 Rn flux emanating from UMTs was one of its objectives. In the first phase, the 222 Rn flux densities were measured regularly on a UMT layer. In the second phase, the UMT was covered with a one-meter layer of compacted material consisting of crushed waste rock derived from mining activities. Radon-222 flux was then measured at the surface of this cover layer. Observations were compared with radon flux calculated using TRACI, a model for vertical water and gas flow and radon transport. The results show that the calculations bear a fair resemblance to the observations in both cases. They also show that the effectiveness of the cover layer calculated with TRACI, using the thickness and textural properties of the cover material, is very close to the measured effectiveness.

International audience; We study the temporal variability of water transfer through the infiltration zone of a karst aquifer by estimating the impulse response of the system using cross-correlogram analyses between rainfall and piezometric level time series. We apply a sliding-window cross-correlation method, which calculates cross-correlograms on partially superposed short time series windows. We apply this method for rainfall and piezometric level time series at six boreholes in a fractured karstic aquifer located in Burgundy, France. Based on cross-correlogram functions, we obtain a time series of response time. At most of the boreholes, the cross-correlation functions change over time, and the response times vary seasonally, being shorter during the summer. This unusual structure can be partly explained by the seasonal variability in rainfall intensity, which is higher during the summer (May–September), inducing the seasonal behaviour of the epikarst. During the summer, when rainfall intensity is higher, the epikarst is more easily and quickly saturated. This induces an increase in lateral water transfer within the epikarst and an increase in concentrated fast flows. We also show that the response time seems to tend towards a limit which represents the maximum saturation of the epikarst.

The approach proposed in this study provides insight into the influence of the basement geochemistry on the spatial distribution of radon (222Rn) levels both at the soil/atmosphere interface and in the atmosphere. We combine different types of in situ radon measurements and a geochemical classification of the lithologies, based on 1/50,000 geological maps, and on their trace element (U, Th) contents. The advantages of this approach are validated by a survey of a stable basement area of Hercynian age, located in South Brittany (western France) and characterized by metamorphic rocks and granitoids displaying a wide range of uranium contents. The radon source-term of the lithologies, their uranium content, is most likely to be the primary parameter which controls the radon concentrations in the outdoor environment. Indeed, the highest radon levels (> or = 100 Bq m-3 in the atmosphere, > or = 100 mBq m-2 s-1 at the surface of the soil) are mostly observed on lithologies whose mean uranium content can exceed 8 ppm and which correspond to peraluminous leucogranites or metagranitoids derived from uraniferous granitoids.

From 1949 to 1971, the French Atomic Energy Commission operated a uranium-ore processing plant in the Paris region. After the plant was dismantled in the 70s, the plot of land that had been used to store the processing residues, and the area covered by the settling basin, were locked up. A study of the site in 1990 showed that the level of radon emissions and radon daughters from these premises was 10 to 100 times greater than the mean level above the ground. In 1992, the local authorities decided to rehabilitate the site. To limit the radon emissions, the land was buried under various materials, including a bed of clay several tens of centimetres thick. The measurements made on the site and in the surroundings of it, after the land was covered, showed clearly that the radon and the radon decay product concentrations were lowered to the same order of magnitude as the representative regional background noise in the Paris basin, typical of a sedimentary rock environment.

[1] Many earthquake-related radon-222 temporal changes have been recorded since the 1960s and are frequently discussed, sometimes initiating a controversial debate on the relevance of radon-222 as an earthquake precursory signal. The diurnal S1–O1 and semidiurnal S2–M2 Earth tide signatures in radon signals are acquired in a natural context. This can be used to calibrate the radon changes under strain accumulation close to epicentral areas, which are often discussed but are rarely evidenced by experimental data. The analysis of a 10 month time series acquired in the subglacial laboratory of the Argentiere glacier, Mont Blanc Massif, French Alps, demonstrates here the unambiguous episodic appearance of the M2–O1 waves in the radon signal with significant amplitudes of 36 and 50 Bq m−3, respectively. We thus prove that radon variations induced by gravitational M2 and O1 waves are detectable in a natural environment. In this particular place, the radon response is probably amplified by cyclic stress variations applied on the upstream side of the natural rock dam into which the laboratory is drilled. The amplification of the radon signal is induced by poroelastic deformation under this particular mechanical forcing. This can elucidate why most precedent studies failed to detect M2–O1 signatures in radon signals recorded in other underground laboratories.

A subslab ventilation system was designed and installed in a high radon house in Brittany, France. Radon concentration in the basement of this house was reduced from an average 10 000 Bq/m 3 to less than 200 Bq/m 3 , thanks to a subslab depressurization system with a double barrier and a 32 W fan. Sealing the concrete slab cracks greatly improved the system performance. Finally, the feasibility of using a passive double barrier ventilation system is shown.

Temporal variation of radon-222 concentration was studied at the Syabru-Bensi hot springs, located on the Main Central Thrust zone in Central Nepal. This site is characterized by several carbon dioxide discharges having maximum fluxes larger than 10 kg m −2 d −1 . Radon concentration was monitored with autonomous Barasol™ probes between January 2008 and November 2009 in two small natural cavities with high CO 2 concentration and at six locations in the soil: four points having a high flux, and two background reference points. At the reference points, dominated by radon diffusion, radon concentration was stable from January to May, with mean values of 22 ± 6.9 and 37 ± 5.5 kBq m −3 , but was affected by a large increase, of about a factor of 2 and 1.6, respectively, during the monsoon season from June to September. At the points dominated by CO 2 advection, by contrast, radon concentration showed higher mean values 39.0 ± 2.6 to 78 ± 1.4 kBq m −3 , remarkably stable throughout the year with small long-term variation, including a possible modulation of period around 6 months. A significant difference between the diffusion dominated reference points and the advection-dominated points also emerged when studying the diurnal S 1 and semi-diurnal S 2 periodic components. At the advection-dominated points, radon concentration did not exhibit S 1 or S 2 components. At the reference points, however, the S 2 component, associated with barometric tide, could be identified during the dry season, but only when the probe was installed at shallow depth. The S 1 component, associated with thermal and possibly barometric diurnal forcing, was systematically observed, especially during monsoon season. The remarkable short-term and long-term temporal stability of the radon concentration at the advection-dominated points, which suggests a strong pressure source at depth, may be an important asset to detect possible temporal variations associated with the seismic cycle.

Searching for gas exhalation around major tectonic contacts raises important methodological issues such as the role of the superficial soil and the possible long distance transport. These effects have been studied on the Xidatan segment of the Kunlun Fault, Qinghai Province, China, using measurement of the radon-222 and carbon dioxide exhalation flux. A significant radon flux, reaching up to 538 ± 33 mBq m −2 s −1 was observed in a 2–3 m deep trench excavated across the fault. On the soil surface, the radon flux varied from 7 to 38 mBq m −2 s −1 , including on the fault trace, with an average value of 14.1 ± 1.0 mBq m −2 s −1 , similar to the world average. The carbon dioxide flux on the soil surface, with an average value of 12.9 ± 3.3 g m −2 day −1 , also remained similar to regular background values. It showed no systematic spatial variation up to a distance of 1 km from the fault, and no clear enhancement in the trench. However, a high carbon dioxide flux of 421 ± 130 g m −2 day −1 was observed near subvertical fractured phyllite outcrops on a hill located about 3 km north of the fault, at the boundary of the large-scale pull-apart basin associated with the fault. This high carbon dioxide flux was associated with a high radon flux of 607 ± 35 mBq m −2 s −1 . These preliminary results indicate that, at the fault trace, it can be important to measure gas flux at the bottom of a trench to remove superficial soil layers. In addition, gas discharges need to be investigated also at some distance from the main fault, in zones where morphotectonics features support associated secondary fractures.

Two hourly-sampled time-series of soil-gas radon concentrations of durations of the order of a year have been investigated for periodic and anomalous phenomena. These time-series have been recorded in locations having little or no routine human behaviour and thus are effectively free of significant anthropogenic influences. One measurement site, Sur-Frêtes, is located in the French Alps, with saturated soil conditions; the second site, Syabru-Bensi, is located in Nepal, in a river terrace with unsaturated soil conditions. In such conditions, periodic components with periods ranging from 8 h to 7 days are often weak and intermittent and therefore, even in the presence of stationary forcing, difficult to identify. Two spectral decomposition techniques, Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Singular Spectrum Analysis (SSA), have been applied to these time series and yield similar results. For Sur-Frêtes, weak diurnal and semi-diurnal components are observed with EMD, while SSA reveals only a diurnal component. In Syabru-Bensi, both EMD and SSA reveal a strong diurnal component and a weaker semi-diurnal component. Tidal components M1 and M2 are also suggested by EMD in Sur-Frêtes, while these frequencies are not observed in Syabru-Bensi. The development of such analytical techniques can help in characterising the multiple physical processes contributing to the surface and subsurface dynamics of soil gases.

The Syabru-Bensi hydrothermal zone, Langtang region (Nepal), is characterized by high radon-222 and CO(2) discharge. Seasonal variations of gas fluxes were studied on a reference transect in a newly discovered gas discharge zone. Radon-222 and CO(2) fluxes were measured with the accumulation chamber technique, coupled with the scintillation flask method for radon. In the reference transect, fluxes reach exceptional mean values, as high as 8700+/-1500 gm(-2)d(-1) for CO(2) and 3400+/-100 x 10(-3) Bq m(-2)s(-1) for radon. Gases fluxes were measured in September 2007 during the monsoon and during the dry winter season, in December 2007 to January 2008 and in December 2008 to January 2009. Contrary to expectations, radon and its carrier gas fluxes were similar during both seasons. The integrated flux along this transect was approximately the same for radon, with a small increase of 11+/-4% during the wet season, whereas it was reduced by 38+/-5% during the monsoon for CO(2). In order to account for the persistence of the high gas emissions during monsoon, watering experiments have been performed at selected radon measurement points. After watering, radon flux decreased within 5 min by a factor of 2-7 depending on the point. Subsequently, it returned to its original value, firstly, by an initial partial recovery within 3-4h, followed by a slow relaxation, lasting around 10h and possibly superimposed by diurnal variations. Monsoon, in this part of the Himalayas, proceeds generally by brutal rainfall events separated by two- or three-day lapses. Thus, the recovery ability shown in the watering experiments accounts for the observed long-term persistence of gas discharge. This persistence is an important asset for long-term monitoring, for example to study possible temporal variations associated with stress accumulation and release.

Radon concentration has been monitored from 1995 to 1999 in the soil of the Sur-Frêtes ridge (French Alps), covered with snow from November to April. Measurements were performed at 70 cm depth, with a sampling time of 1 h, at two points: the summit of the ridge, at an altitude of 1792 m, and the bottom of the ridge, at an altitude of 1590 m. On the summit, radon concentration shows a moderate seasonal variation, with a high value from October to April (winter), and a low value from May to September (summer). At the bottom of the ridge, a large and opposite seasonal variation is observed, with a low value in winter and a high value in summer. Fluctuations of the radon concentration seem to be associated with temperature variations, an effect which is largely delusory. Indeed, these variations are actually due to water infiltration. A simplified mixing model is used to show that, at the summit of the ridge, two effects compete in the radon response: a slow infiltration response, rich in radon, with a typical time scale of days, and a fast infiltration of radon-poor rainwater. At the bottom of the ridge, similarly, two groundwater contributions compete: one slow infiltration response, similar to the response seen at the summit, and an additional slower response, with a typical time scale of about a month. This second slower response can be interpreted as the aquifer discharge in response to snow melt. This study shows that, while caution is necessary to properly interpret the various effects, the temporal variations of the radon concentration in soil can be understood reasonably well, and appear to be a sensitive tool to study the subtle interplay of near surface transfer processes of groundwater with different transit times. © 2008 Elsevier B.V. International audience; Within the framework of the European projects GAÏA and CORSEIS, dedicated to the study of the rift of Corinth, various geophysical and geochemical monitoring had been performed between 1995 and 2002 for the search of crustal transients and earthquake precursors. We present here the monitoring of 222Rn activity in soils, which are expected to carry information on underground fluids transport mechanisms. In order to identify transient anomalies, possibly correlated with seismic activity, continuous long-term monitoring is needed, and the background level is to be assessed for each measurement site. We discuss the methodological constraints (probes, installation, and site effects) and present the first results on the magnitude of radon variations with time. Radon time-series in soils gas appear to be very site-dependent: background levels, yearly cycle and spurious signals differ as the result of multiple local effects (meteorological disturbances, permeability of soils, etc.).

International audience; Searching for small periodic signals, such as the 12 hr (S 2) barometric tide, and monitoring their amplitude as a function of time, can provide important clues on the complex processes affecting fluid transport in unsaturated fractured media under multiple influences. Here, first, we show that a modified spectrogram analysis (MSA) is more efficient than simple Fourier transform to reveal weak periodic signals. Secondly, we show how transient periodic signals can be monitored as a function of time using spectrograms. These methods are applied to time-series of radon and carbon dioxide concentration, dripwater flow rates and air temperature measured during several years in the Roselend dead-end tunnel, located in the French Alps near an artificial lake. A weak S 2 line is evidenced in radon concentration, with enhanced amplitude during transient radon bursts. Similarly, the S 2 line is observed using MSA in dripwater flow rates which sample mainly fracture flow, as suggested by a hydrochemical analysis, while it is not seen in dripwater flow rates sampling matrix flow. In the absence of a strong 24 hr line, the presence of a S 2 line suggests sensitivity to barometric pressure , and thus a significant advective contribution in radon and some dripwater transport. No S 2 line is observed in the carbon dioxide time-series. The temporal structure of the S 2 component, however, is not similar in the radon concentration and the dripwater flow rates, suggesting, in particular, that dripwater does not play a significant role in the generation of radon bursts. Temperature time-series exhibit a significant S 2 contribution, induced by atmospheric pressure, spatially organised in the tunnel, decreasing vertically upwards. A remarkable transient temperature inversion during radon bursts suggests that the additional advective air contributions responsible for the radon bursts occur from the non-saturated rocks below the tunnel.

Reactive transport mechanisms and transit times in unsaturated fractured crystalline rocks have been determined from field-scale observations using high-resolution monitoring over a three-year period. In the Roselend natural laboratory (French Alps), a tunnel provided access to the heart of the fractured-rock unsaturated zone, at 55 m depth, where two sampling sites provided access to dripwater samples from zones with contrasting contributions from matrix and fracture flow. Solute concentrations and fluid fluxes were determined, taking advantage of two events during which water with elevated concentrations of chloride (Cl) and other solutes infiltrated into the fractured medium. In one event, approximately 500,000 l of water with high NaCl concentrations flooded an area of 10–100 m 2 above the sampling sites in the tunnel. The other event involved sampling after a Cl-rich rainfall event, which is unusual at this location. Elevated Na concentrations from the NaCl spill triggered cation exchange reactions, which apparently occurred mainly in the soil above the bedrock, releasing Ca, Mg, and K. Concentrations of Cl and the exchanged cations during transport through the fractured rock were controlled primarily by dilution, although Na–Mg exchange occurred to a limited extent. Chloride concentrations significantly above background were observed one day after the beginning of the NaCl spill. Average travel times estimated from moment calculations of breakthrough curves from the two events ranged from 25 to 100 days at the sampling site dominated by flow through major fractures and 200–300 days at the site dominated by matrix or sub-order fracture flow. Comparison with results of flow-model simulations conducted using reconstructed fracture networks indicated that rapid flow occurs at near-saturation conditions in the fractures and that slower flow rates occurred at lower degrees of saturation. Thus, it is important to consider both variable saturation and fracture versus matrix flow in order to understand fluid fluxes and reactive transport in unsaturated, fractured media. This study illustrates how long-term, high-resolution monitoring of solute concentrations and fluid fluxes can provide valuable insight into flow and transport in these complex systems.

International audience; The concentration activity of radon-222 has been monitored, with some interruptions, from 1997 to 2005 in the end section of a slightly rising, dead-end, 38-m long tunnel located in the Phulchoki hill, near Kathmandu, Nepal. While a high concentration varying from 6 × 103 Bq m−3 to 10 × 103 Bq m−3 is observed from May to September (rainy summer season), the concentration remains at a low level of about 200 Bq m−3 from October to March (dry winter season). This reduction of radon concentration is associated with natural ventilation of the tunnel, which, contrary to expectations for a rising tunnel, takes place mainly from October to March when the outside air temperature drops below the average tunnel temperature. This interpretation is supported by temperature measurements in the atmosphere of the tunnel, a few meters away from the entrance. The temporal variations of the diurnal amplitude of this temperature indeed follow the ventilation rate deduced from the radon measurements. In the absence of significant ventilation (summer season), the radon exhalation flux at the rock surface into the tunnel atmosphere can be inferred; it exhibits a yearly variation with additional transient reductions associated with heavy rainfall, likely to be due to water infiltration. No effect of atmospheric pressure variations on the radon concentration is observed in this tunnel. This experiment illustrates how small differences in the location and geometry of a tunnel can lead to vastly different behaviours of the radon concentration versus time. This observation has consequences for the estimation of the dose rate and the practicability of radon monitoring for tectonic purposes in underground environments.

International audience; Heating experiments have been performed during 1.5–18 days in a confined room of volume about 300 m3 in an underground quarry near Paris (France). During heating, a thermal stratification of the atmosphere is observed. After a time depending on the presence or not of ventilation, this stratification reaches a stationary state during which the temperature difference between the rock and the atmosphere is constant. During this stationary phase, both temperatures increase linearly with time. We propose here a new model of filling box with radiative heat exchanges and cooling by direct contact at the boundaries, which accounts for the observed vertical profiles of temperature in the atmosphere, and for the temperature variation with time. Such contributions of heat transfer at the boundaries are important in situations such as fire in confined cavities, presence of visitors in a painted cave, or in the study of building ventilation.

The effect of air exchange on the concentration of 222Rn and its progeny in the atmosphere of the Roselend tunnel, in the French Alps, is estimated using a box modelling scheme. In this scheme, the atmosphere is divided into a small number of well mixed zones, separated by flow restricted interfaces, characterized by their exchange rate. A four-box model, representing the three sections of the tunnel present until 2001 and an adjacent inner room, accounts for the spatial variations of the background 222Rn concentration, and for the time structure of transient bursts observed regularly in this tunnel since 1995. A delay of the order of one day, observed during some transient bursts in the inner room with respect to the end of the tunnel, is accounted for if the bursts are assumed to be mainly generated in the end section of the tunnel, and stored temporarily in the inner room via air exchange. The measured radon concentration is reproduced by this model for an air exchange rate of 1.6×10-6 s-1 between the room and the tunnel, in a context of a global ventilation rate of 10-5 s-1 in the tunnel. Gradual onset and decay phases, varying from burst to burst, are also suggested. The equilibrium factor of 222Rn with its progeny, measured in 2002 with values varying from 0.60±0.05 to 0.78±0.06, is interpreted with a five-box model representing the five sections of the tunnel present after 2001. This model indicates that the equilibrium factor does not provide additional constraints on the air exchange rates, but the value of the deposition rate of the unattached short-lived radon progeny can be inferred, with results varying from 0.2 to 6 h-1 in the various sections. This study illustrates the benefits of a simple modelling tool to evaluate the effect of natural ventilation on 222Rn and its progeny concentration in underground cavities, which is important for radioprotection and for a reliable characterization of signatures of hydrogeological or geodynamical processes. Conversely, this study shows that 222Rn and progeny measurements provide a non-invasive method for characterizing natural ventilation conditions in delicate underground cavities, such as painted caves. © 2005 Elsevier B.V. International audience; A unique humanitarian, scientific, and technical experiment is currently taking place in a forgotten mountainous region of West Africa. The experiment is on the verge of reaching its operational stage, which consists of the eradication of a “new” natural hazard; one that is potentially devastating, but which has been known for only 20 years. The Lake Nyos catastrophe, which claimed 1800 victims in August 1986, was not unprecedented. Indeed, 2 years previously a lethal gas burst, originating from nearby Lake Monoun in the same remote area of Cameroon, killed 37 people—an odd and tragic episode that went almost unnoticed. One had never before heard of Mother Nature asphyxiating human beings and most higher animals on such a scale in a single and brief non‐volcanic event.

The concentration of radon-222 has been monitored since 1995 in the atmosphere of a 2 m transverse dimension, 128 m long, dead-end horizontal tunnel located in the French Alps, at an altitude of 1600 m. Most of the time, the radon concentration is stable, with an average value ranging from 200 Bq m −3 near the entrance to about 1000 Bq m −3 in the most confined section, with an equilibrium factor between radon and its short-lived decay products varying from 0.61 to 0.78. However, radon bursts are repeatedly observed, with amplitudes reaching up to 36 × 10 3 Bq m −3 and durations varying from one to several weeks, with similar spatial variations along the tunnel as the background concentration. These spatial variations are qualitatively interpreted in terms of natural ventilation. Comparing the radon background concentration with the measured radon exhalation flux at the wall yields an estimate of 8 ± 2 × 10 −6 s −1 (0.03 ± 0.007 h −1 ) for the ventilation rate. The hypothesis that the bursts could be due to transient changes in ventilation can be ruled out. Thus, the bursts are the results of transient increased radon exhalation at the walls, that could be due to meteorological effects or possibly combined hydrological and mechanical forcing associated with the water level variations of the nearby Roselend reservoir lake. Such studies are of interest for radiation protection in poorly ventilated underground settings, and, ultimately, for a better understanding of radon exhalation associated with tectonic or volcanic processes.

[1] The soil-gas 222Rn concentration had been monitored almost continuously from June 1993 till November 1996 on Taal volcano, Luzon Island, the Philippines. During this measurement period, a singular Mb 7.1 earthquake occurred on November 15, 1994, between Luzon and Mindoro, 48 km south of the volcano. Twenty-two days before the earthquake, an anomalous increase in soil-gas radon (peak to background ratio = 6) was recorded, unique in the whole time series. The possible generation of this anomaly by typhoon Teresa, which struck Luzon Island a few days before, was ruled out one year later when super typhoon Angela, the most powerful storm to hit the Philippines in ten years, crossed Luzon Island along almost the same track without triggering a similar disturbance in the radon signal. Consequently, there is strong evidence that the Taal radon anomaly originated in stress accumulation preceding the Mindoro earthquake.

An automatic method for measuring the radon flux at soil surfaces is described. The proposed experimental design minimises the disturbance induced by the accumulator technique widely used to measure radon exhalation from the ground. By exposing the ground surface to the normal weather conditions between two consecutive measurements, this method can be used to study, in the long term, the effects of meteorological factors on the radon flux density at the soil-atmosphere interface.

TRACI, a model based on the physical mechanisms governing the migration of radon in unsaturated soils, has been developed to evaluate the radon flux density at the surface of uranium mill tailings. To check the validity of the TRACI model and the effectiveness of cover layers, an in situ study was launched in 1997 with the French uranium mining company, COGEMA. The study consisted of continuous measurements of moisture content, suction, radon concentration at various depths inside a UMT cover, and flux density at its surface. An initial analysis has shown that radon concentration and flux density, as calculated with a steady-state diffusion model using monthly averaged moisture contents, are in good agreement with measured monthly averaged concentrations and flux densities.

Two of the most often cited earthquake precursors are radon emanation and electric potential variations, but these few reported examples have generally been deemed questionable. If a mechanism relating crustal deformation to radon emanation or electrical signals does indeed exist, it is thought to involve fluids. Some preliminary insight has been gained into these processes from the study of natural systems under controlled mechanical and hydrological conditions. Here we report electric potential variations, radon emanation and deformation measurements recorded since 1995 in the French Alps in the vicinity of two artificial lakes which have strong seasonal variations in water level of more than 50 metres. We observe that electric potential variations and radon emanations are repeatedly associated with transient deformation events induced by variations in lake levels. These events are characterized by a change in ground tilt which deviates from the expected elastic response, and are associated with periods of accelerating strain, which suggests that accelerated loading can enhance fluid transport properties. Qualitatively, this behaviour can be accounted for by a model in which straining induces fluid overpressure and dynamic flow in cracks. These observations may shed light on the sensitivity of rock transport properties to deformation.

where A is the radon concentration in Bq.m, T is the duration of the working session in hours, DCF is the Dose Conversion Factor in mSv/WLM (Working Level Month, corresponding to 170 hours at 100 pCi.L=3,700 Bq.m) and Feq is the equilibrium factor of radon-222 with its progenies. A second problem in our dose estimate was the choice of the value for the DCF. At a breathing rate of 1.5 m/hour (light exercise), we used a range from 16 to 23 mSv/WLM (Nikezic et al., 2002). The commonly used value for the DCF is however 5 mSv/WLM (Porstendorfer, 1994). A conservative range for the DCF is therefore from 5 to 20 mSv/WLM. For A=1,700 Bq.m, a working session of 8 hours, and assuming Feq=0.5, the integrated dose thus ranges from 54 to 216 μSv (instead of the range 41 to 59 μSv given in the paper).

The deformation of the crust and fluid rock interactions are both important problems in the Earth sciences. Observing and measuring these coupled phenomena will improve our understanding of geologic processes acting in fractured porous media and the transfer properties of fluids. These observations can be made via laboratory experiments, but the sample scale is not always satisfying for understanding crustal-scale phenomena. On the contrary, monitoring a natural site at the field-scale provides clues that are directly interpretable in terms of geologic phenomena. The Roselend Experiment is one such endeavor that provides a setting for a multidisciplinary research project. Its goal is to determine transfer processes and transient phenomena at different scales in space and time within a highly dynamic system that is submitted to mechanical, hydrologic, meteorological, and thermal forces.
