Increasing the metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) excited state lifetime of polypyridine iron(II) complexes can be achieved by lowering the ligand's π* orbital energy and by increasing the ligand field splitting. In the homo- and heteroleptic complexes [Fe(cpmp)2]2+ (12+) and [Fe(cpmp)(ddpd)]2+ (22+) with the tridentate ligands 6,2’’-carboxypyridyl-2,2’-methylamine-pyridyl-pyridine (cpmp) and N,N’-dimethyl-N,N’-di-pyridin-2-ylpyridine-2,6-diamine (ddpd) two or one dipyridyl ketone moieties provide low energy π* acceptor orbitals. A good metal-ligand orbital overlap to increase the ligand field splitting is achieved by optimizing the octahedricity through CO and NMe units between the coordinating pyridines which enable the formation of six-membered chelate rings. The push-pull ligand cpmp provides intra-ligand and ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (ILCT, LL'CT) excited states in addition to MLCT excited states. Ground and excited state properties of 12+ and 22+ were accessed by X-ray diffraction analyses, resonance Raman spectroscopy, (spectro)electrochemistry, EPR spectroscopy, X-ray emission spectroscopy, static and time-resolved IR and UV/Vis/NIR absorption spectroscopy as well as quantum chemical calculations.

The relative yield of photoproducts of N-(α-phenylethyl)salicylimine can be modulated by variation of the excitation wavelength, as we investigate by matrix-isolation IR spectroscopy with sequential irradiation and by ultrafast transient absorption.

Photochemical studies on supramolecular hosts that can encapsulate small guest molecules commonly focus on three aspects: photoswitching the cage to release or trap the guest, the effect of the confining environment on the guest, and light-induced exciton or charge transfer within the cage structure. Here, we exploit ultrafast spectroscopy to address how the guest alters the photoswitching characteristics of the cage. For this, the impacts of three disparate guest compounds on ring-opening or ring-closure of a dithienylethene (DTE) ligand in a photoswitchable DTE-based coordination cage are juxtaposed. The guest modulates both outcome and timescale of the cage's photodynamics, by an interplay of structural strain, heavy-atom effect, and enhancement of charge-transfer processes exercised by the guest on the photo-excited cage. The approach might prove beneficial for attuning the applicability of photoswitchable nanocontainers and desired guest compounds.

We introduce a simple way to liquify rare earth metals (REM) by incorporating the corresponding cations, in particular Eu3+, La3+, and Y3+, into polyvalent ionic liquids (ILs). In contrast to conventional methods, this is achieved not by transforming them into anionic complexes, but by keeping them as bare cations and combining them with convenient, cheap and commercially available anions (A) in the form [REM3+][A−]3. To do so, we follow the COncept of Melting Point Lowering due to EThoxylation (COMPLET) with alkyl polyethylene oxide carboxylates as anions. We provide basic properties, such as glass transition temperatures, viscosities, electrical conductivities, as well as water-octanol partition constants P and show that these ILs have remarkably different properties, despite the similarity of their cations. In addition, we show that the ionic liquids possess interesting luminescent properties as non-conventional fluorophores.

We report the first successful use of consecutive two-photon accumulation of visible light energy to obtain ultra-high oxidation potentials (> +3 V vs. saturated calomel electrode) enabled by a new class of rationally designed cyclic triarylamine photocatalysts. We demonstrate its practical and synthetic utility in a series of reactions of electron deficient arenes and fluoroarenes with N-nucleophiles. We identified that the photocatalytic reaction is initiated by the lowest excited state of the photocatalyst’s radical cation which abstracts an electron from the substrate only at non-diffusive/direct contact encounters, i.e. the omnipresence of substrate as co-solvent, since the excited radical cation lives only for ps. Neither pre-assembly nor a specific ‘anti-Kasha’ reactivity of a higher excited electronic state is observed. This method may serve as a promising basis for yet unexplored chemical reactions of substrates with very high oxidation potential and presents an attractive alternative to existing methods.

Chemical bond activations mediated by H-bond interactions involving highly electronegative elements such as nitrogen and oxygen are powerful tactics in modern catalysis research. On the contrary, kindred catalytic regimes in which heavier, less electronegative elements such as selenium engage in H-bond interactions to co-activate C-Se σ-bonds under oxidative conditions are elusive. Complexes of RhI and IrI of the [M(COD)(NHC)X] type (where M=Rh or Ir, COD=1,5‐cyclooctadiene, NHC=N‐heterocyclic carbene, and X=halide) have recently shown promising cytotoxic activities against several cancer cell lines. Initial mechanism of action studies provided some knowledge about their interaction with DNA and proteins. However, information about their cellular localization remains scarce owing to luminescence quenching within this complex type. Herein, the synthesis of two rare examples of luminescent RhI and IrI [M(COD)(NHC)I] complexes with 1,8‐naphthalimide‐based emitting ligands is reported. All new complexes are comprehensively characterized, including with single‐crystal X‐ray structures. Steric crowding in one derivative leads to two distinct rotamers in solution, which apparently can be distinguished both by pronounced NMR shifts and by their respective spectral and temporal emission signatures. When the photophysical properties of these new complexes are exploited for cellular imaging in HT‐29 and PT‐45 cancer cell lines, it is demonstrated that the complexes accumulate predominantly in the endoplasmic reticulum, which is an entirely new finding and provides the first insight into the cellular localization of such IrI(NHC) complexes., Anticancer NHC complexes: RhI and IrI N‐heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes provide an auspicious class of potential new anticancer agents; however, cellular imaging with luminescent derivatives of these complex types is often hampered by luminescence quenching. Building on an analysis of the parameters for metal‐induced quenching processes, new examples of this complex class are designed with properties suitable for cellular imaging. Their main localization in the endoplasmic reticulum is not only an unprecedented finding but also represents the first ever insight into the cellular localization of Ir(NHC) complexes in the oxidation state +I.

The phenomenon of photoacidity, i.e., an increase in acidity by several orders of magnitude upon electronic excitation, is frequently encountered in aromatic alcohols capable of transferring a proton to a suitable acceptor. A promising new class of neutral super-photoacids based on pyranine derivatives has been shown to exhibit pronounced solvatochromic effects. To disclose the underlying mechanisms contributing to excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) and the temporal characteristics of solvation and ESPT, we scrutinize the associated ultrafast dynamics of the strongest photoacid of this class, namely tris(1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoropropan-2-yl)8-hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-trisulfonate, in acetoneous environment, thereby finding experimental evidence for ESPT even under these adverse conditions for proton transfer. Juxtaposing results from time-correlated single-photon counting and femtosecond transient absorption measurements combined with a complete decomposition of all signal components, i.e., absorption of ground and excited states as well as stimulated emission, we disclose dynamics of solvation, rotational diffusion, and radiative relaxation processes in acetone and identify the relevant steps of ESPT along with the associated time scales. Super-photoacids, that is, photoacids with a negative urn:x-wiley:23670932:media:cptc202200041:cptc202200041-math-0001 value in the electronically excited state, can trigger an excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) to the solvent. For the neutral pyranine-derived super-photoacid studied here, even indications for ESPT in acetoneous solution are reported. The characteristics of ESPT in this environment, that is, which intermediates exist and what the impact of cosolvents is, remain unsettled though. In this work, we study ESPT in acetone-water mixtures by steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. Various effects are observed: First, the addition of water supports the formation of a hydrogen-bonded ground-state complex comprising one water molecule and the photoacid, whose excitation triggers the formation of a hydrogen-bonded ion pair on a sub-ns time scale. Second, water has an overall accelerating effect on the fluorescence dynamics of the involved emitting species, whose contributions are disentangled in a global analysis scheme, enabling the identification of emission from the free photoacid, a photoacid-water complex, a hydrogen-bonded ion pair, and the deprotonated photoacid. At least two water molecules are necessary for ESPT in the environment. Third, additional acidification thwarts an efficient ground-state complex formation of the photoacid and water. However, upon excitation, complexation may occur on a timescale faster than the photoacid's excited-state lifetime, so that emission from a nascent complex emerges.

Formazan molecules exhibit photochromism because isomerization processes following excitation may occur in both the azo group and the hydrazone group; thus, each formazan may be present in various forms with different colors. The ratio of these forms depends on the illumination conditions and the environment of the formazan with a most incisive sensibility of the thermal anti-syn relaxation of the C═N toward slight traces of impurities in toluene solutions, as reported most prominently for 1,3,5-triphenylformazan. Here, we study the latter compound with transient absorption spectroscopy to investigate the role of these traces by adding small amounts of both protic and aprotic cosolvents. Whereas the activation barrier decreases if the binary solvent mixture has a higher polarity, the role of hydrogen bonding can have a reverse impact on the thermal isomerization rate. Both the addition of an aprotic cosolvent and the addition of a protic cosolvent can slow the reaction due to their hydrogen-bond accepting and hydrogen-bond donating properties, respectively. In the case of methanol as a cosolvent, this effect outweighed that of the polarity increase for small concentrations, which was not observed for the fluorinated alcohol hexafluoroisopropanol. The results are explained in the context of a competition between solute-cosolvent and cosolvent-cosolvent hydrogen bonding.

Transition metal complexes capable of releasing small-molecule messengers such as carbon monoxide and nitric oxide upon photoactivation are versatile tools in various fields of chemistry and biology. In this work, we report on the ultrafast photochemistry of [Mo(CO)2(NO)(iPr3tacn)]PF6 (iPr3tacn = 1,4,7-triisopropyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane), which was synthesized and subsequently characterized in continuous illumination studies and with femtosecond UV-pump/UV-probe and UV-pump/MIR-probe spectroscopy, as well as with stationary calculations. The experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that while the photodissociation of one of the two CO ligands upon UV excitation can be inferred both on an ultrafast timescale as well as under exposure times of several minutes, no evidence of NO release is observed under the same conditions. The binding mode of the diatomic ligands is impacted by the electronic excitation, and excited molecules are observed on a timescale of tens of picoseconds before CO is released from the coordination sphere. Furthermore, based on calculated potential energy scans, we suggest that photolysis of NO could be possible after a subsequent excitation of an electronically excited state with a second laser pulse, or by accessing low-lying excited states that otherwise cannot be directly excited by light.

The direct interactions between the ions produce strong ion‐specific properties despite the similarities between lanthanides. Proof of concept experiments highlight the feasibility of rare earth metal separation in liquid/liquid separation.

We investigate how the absorption and fluorescence of halogenated imidazolium compounds in acetonitrile solution is influenced by the presence of counterions and the ability to act as halogen-bond donors. Experimental measurements and quantum chemical calculations with correlated wavefunction methods are applied to study three monodentate halogen-bond complexes of iodo-imidazolium, iodo-benzimidazolium and bromo-benzimidazolium cations with triflate counterions, and a bidentate complex of bis(iodo-benzimidazolium) dications with chloride as counterion. The three monodentate complexes with triflate counterions relax after photoexcitation to minima on the S1 potential energy surface where the C–I bond and the I⋯O halogen bond are partially broken. For the bidentate complex with the smaller chloride counterion the halogen-bond interaction stays intact in the S1 minimum that is reached by relaxation from the Franck–Condon point. In a complementing experimental approach, stationary absorption and emission as well as transient fluorescence spectra are recorded for iodo- and bromo-benzimidazolium in acetonitrile. Variation of the counterion, substitution of the iodine by bromine, hydrogen, or methyl, and the comparison to theory allows the identification of spectroscopic signatures and photoinduced dynamics associated with ion-pairing.

Preorganization and aggregation in photoredox catalysis can significantly affect reactivities or selectivities but are often neglected in synthetic and mechanistic studies, since the averaging effect of flexible ensembles can effectively hide the key activation signatures. In addition, aggregation effects are often overlooked due to highly diluted samples used in many UV studies. One prominent example is Knowles's acceleration effect of thiophenol in proton-coupled electron transfer mediated hydroamidations, for which mainly radical properties were discussed. Here, cooperative reactivity enhancements of thiophenol/disulfide mixtures reveal the importance of H-bond networks. The effects of biomolecular embedding on the photoinduced relaxation process of the DNA-minor-groove binder berenil, diminazene aceturate, are studied with quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics, QM/MM, calculations that employ the algebraic diagrammatic construction through second-order, ADC(2), for the quantum mechanical part and an atomistic polarizable embedding for the classical part. The lowest singlet excitation to the S1 state is a bright transition with a ππ* character and a perichromatic red shift, due to the interactions with the solvent and DNA. The excited-state relaxation pathway is a two-step mechanism, an N═N azo-bond stretch followed by a volume-conserving bicycle-pedal twist. The DNA confinement and the coupling to solvent molecules via hydrogen bonds lead, for the excited-state relaxation process, only to small deviations from the ideal bicycle-pedal relaxation. Because of its volume-conserving character, the S1 excited-state relaxation proceeds almost unhindered, even in a fully rigid minor-groove confinement. With a fully frozen DNA minor groove and solvent, the energy gap for deexcitation from S1 to the ground state increased to 2.0 eV compared to 0.16 eV in aqueous solution. When the relaxation of the first solvation shell is included, the relaxation process on the S1 potential energy surface proceeds to a region on the potential energy surface, where only a small gap to the ground-state potential energy surface remains, 0.43 eV. These results show that the solvent relaxation has a significant effect in controlling the energy gap between the ground and S1 electronically excited states, which explains the experimental observations of the fluorescence characteristics of berenil in DNA confinement.

Understanding deactivation mechanisms of functional groups is a key step to design novel photo-active devices and molecular imaging agents. Here, we elucidate the photochemistry of linear triazenes, an extended analogue of the photo-switchable azo group, exemplarily for the widely used DNA-minor-groove binder berenil. Combining ultrafast spectroscopy and ab initio calculations unveils that the E-azo,s-trans structure of berenil predominates in the gas phase and in aqueous solution, and ADC(2) intrinsic reaction coordinate calculations disclose that the excited-state relaxation to the S1 minima/conical intersections follows a two-step mechanism: N[double bond, length as m-dash]N bond stretching followed by a bicycle-pedal rotation in the triazene bridge. Furthermore, studying the ground-state pathways shows that a fraction of the molecules relaxes back to the E-azo,s-trans isomer while the other part photoisomerizes to the Z-azo,s-trans via a hula-twist motion, as evidenced by experimental quantum yields of Φ ≈ 0.5 found for berenil in water, ethylene glycol, or bound to β-trypsin. Moreover, our studies show that while the excited-state relaxation is insensitive to the environment, the ground-state dynamics depend on biomolecular binding partners.

The photochemical deracemization of spiro[cyclopropane‐1,3′‐indolin]‐2′‐ones (spirocyclopropyl oxindoles) was studied. The corresponding 2,2‐dichloro compound is configurationally labile upon direct irradiation at λ=350 nm and upon irradiation at λ=405 nm in the presence of achiral thioxanthen‐9‐one as the sensitizer. The triplet 1,3‐diradical intermediate generated in the latter reaction was detected by transient absorption spectroscopy and its lifetime determined (τ=22 μs). Using a chiral thioxanthone or xanthone, with a lactam hydrogen bonding site as a photosensitizer, allowed the deracemization of differently substituted chiral spirocyclopropyl oxindoles with yields of 65–98 % and in 50–85 % ee (17 examples). Three mechanistic contributions were identified to co‐act favorably for high enantioselectivity: the difference in binding constants to the chiral thioxanthone, the smaller molecular distance in the complex of the minor enantiomer, and the lifetime of the intermediate 1,3‐diradical., A chiral thioxanthone‐ or xanthone‐based sensitizer allows for the differentiation of cyclopropane enantiomers and for a photochemical deracemization (17 examples, up to 85 % ee). The key intermediate of this entropically disfavored process was identified by transient absorption spectroscopy to be a 1,3‐ diradical with a lifetime of τ=22 μs.

Radicals in solution are crucial for many chemical processes. In this work, we unveil the photoreaction sequence leading to radical formation from tetrazolium salts, which are extensively used in enzyme assays and also exhibit a rich photochemistry. Upon UV irradiation, the tetrazolium ion turns into the tetrazolinyl radical via two intermediates on a nanosecond timescale. The solvent's polarity governs the rate of formation, but the reaction pathway towards the tetrazolinyl radical is identical for aqueous and alcoholic solutions, although the final photoproduct distribution differs. These observations provide new insight into the versatile reactivity of tetrazolium salts and ultrafast radical formation in the liquid phase.

Coherent multidimensional electronic spectroscopy can be employed to unravel various channels in molecular chemical reactions. This approach is thus not limited to analysis of energy transfer or charge transfer (i.e. processes from photophysics), but can also be employed in situations where the investigated system undergoes permanent structural changes (i.e. in photochemistry). Photochemical model reactions are discussed by using the example of merocyanine/spiropyran-based molecular switches, which show a rich variety of reaction channels, in particular ring opening and ring closing, cis-trans isomerization, coherent vibrational wave-packet motion, radical ion formation, and population relaxation. Using pump-probe, pump-repump-probe, coherent two-dimensional and three-dimensional, triggered-exchange 2D, and quantum-control spectroscopy, we gain intuitive pictures on which product emerges from which reactant and which reactive molecular modes are associated.

We report the experimental determination of the intramolecular enol-enol tautomerization rate of an unsymmetric β-diketone, benzoylacetone, with femtosecond transient absorption in the ultraviolet. Initially, there is an equilibrium of two possible enolic structures in solution, which is disturbed upon UV excitation by exciting a disproportionate fraction of one enolic form. Comparison to symmetric β-diketones, acetylacetone and dibenzoylmethane, suggests that ground-state proton transfer gives rise to additional dynamics in benzoylacetone due to the dissimilarity of the two enolic forms. In the excited state of the molecules, the intramolecular H-bond is initially broken, followed by photochemical processes towards rotamer structures. Our studies therefore disclose intramolecular proton transfer among electronic ground as well as excited states of benzoylacetone. Considering the importance of β-diketones as a common model of enol-enol tautomerization and their resemblance to enzymatic enolates, the present study provides valuable information on the ultrafast mechanism of intramolecular proton transfer processes.

A series of novel Re(i)(CO)3-NHC complexes bearing unsubstituted benzimidazol-2-ylidene ligands as well as a variety of bisimine ligands has been prepared and comprehensively characterised. The complexes were found to exhibit potent antimicrobial activity on Gram-positive bacterial strains in the low micromolar concentration range, rendering these compounds interesting lead structures for the development of novel metal-based antibiotic agents. Further, the complexes exhibit pronounced luminescence with large Stokes shifts in acetonitrile and water at ambient temperature. The photophysical properties including luminescence lifetimes and quantum yields are consistent with emission from 3MLCT (d(Re) → π*(bisimine)) states.

We present an optical setup capable of mirroring an arbitrary, potentially time-varying, polarization state of an ultrashort laser pulse. The incident beam is split up in two and the polarization of one beam is mirrored by reflection off a mirror in normal incidence. Afterwards, both beams are recombined in time and space such that two collinear ultrashort laser pulses with mutually mirrored polarization, i.e., laser-pulse enantiomers, leave the setup. We employ the Jones formalism to describe the function of the setup and analyze the influence of alignment errors before describing the experimental implementation and alignment protocol. Since no wave plates are utilized, broadband pulses in a large wavelength range can be processed. In particular, we show that the setup outperforms broadband achromatic wave plates. Furthermore, since the two beams travel separately through the optical system they can be blocked independently. This opens the possibility for circular dichroism, ellipsometry, and anisotropy spectroscopy with shot-to-shot chopping and detection schemes as well as chiral coherent control applications.

Tetrazolium salts are exploited in various fields of research by virtue of their low reduction potentials. Increasingly, associated applications also attend to the photochemical and luminescence properties of these systems. Here, we investigate the photoinduced dynamics of phenyl-benzo[c]tetrazolo-cinnolinium chloride (PTC), one of the very few known fluorescent tetrazolium compounds, by using time-correlated single-photon counting, femtosecond fluorescence upconversion, and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. PTC is generated photochemically by ultraviolet illumination of 2,3,5-triphenyl-tetrazolium chloride (TTC) in various alcohols. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements on PTC with different excitation wavelengths disclose biphasic solvation and vibrational relaxation dynamics. Depending on the solvent, the emission behavior of PTC is characterized by quantum yields on the order of several tens of percent and corresponding excited-state lifetimes of several hundreds of picoseconds. The radiative rate is basically constant for the studied alcohols, whereas the rate of the competing non-radiative process is sensitive to the solvent polarity. Hence, we discuss the possible involvement of intermediate radicals and further presumptive reaction pathways pursued after photoexcitation of PTC.

Many synthetic DNA minor groove binders exhibit a strong increase in fluorescence when bound to DNA. The pharmaceutical-relevant berenil (diminazene aceturate) is an exception with an extremely low fluorescence quantum yield (on the order of 10–4). We investigate the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of this triazene by femtosecond time-resolved fluorescence experiments in water, ethylene glycol, and buffer and bound to the enzyme β-trypsin, the minor groove of AT-rich DNA, and G-quadruplex DNA. Ab initio calculations provide additional mechanistic insight. The complementing studies unveil that the excited-state motion initiated by ππ* excitation occurs in two phases: a subpicosecond phase associated with the lengthening of the central N═N double bond, followed by a bicycle-pedal-type motion of the triazene bridge, which is almost volume-conserving and can proceed efficiently within only a few picoseconds even under spatially confined conditions. Excitation with shaped femtosecond laser pulses is a logical extension of coherent two-dimensional (2D) spectroscopy. Here we combine quantum control and information from 2D spectroscopy to analyze the initial steps in three competing reaction pathways of an isomerizing merocyanine dye. Besides the achievement of control objectives, we show how excitation with tailored pulses can be used to retrieve photochemical information that is inaccessible or experimentally demanding to obtain with other approaches.

In photoinduced molecular reaction dynamics, the effects of electronic charge redistribution can lead to multiple pathways that are determined by the nature of the initial structures involved and the environment the molecule of interest is studied in. The β-diketones are a common example of this complexity. They show keto-enol tautomerism that is almost totally shifted toward the enolic form. However, compared to the gas phase, the photochemistry proceeds completely differently by virtue of the solvent environment for these compounds, which are used in commercial sunscreen agents due to a high absorption in the ultraviolet (UV) and fast deactivation processes. We disclose these dynamics by investigating three symmetrical β-diketones in various solvents. To observe these effects on an ultrafast time scale directly in the UV spectral region where the relevant electronic transitions take place, we have developed and employed femtosecond transient absorption with detection capability in the deep UV. Our studies confirm that electronic excitation of the chelated enol form does not lead to any ultrafast photochemistry other than proton transfer followed by rotamerization. The formation of the nonchelated conformers takes place on a picosecond time scale through a dark state, whereas the recovery to the stable chelated enol form is a comparably slow process.

Coherent multidimensional electronic spectroscopy is commonly used to investigate photophysical phenomena such as light harvesting in photosynthesis in which the system returns back to its ground state after energy transfer. By contrast, we introduce multidimensional spectroscopy to study ultrafast photochemical processes in which the investigated molecule changes permanently. Exemplarily, the emergence in 2D and 3D spectra of a cross-peak between reactant and product reveals the cis-trans photoisomerization of merocyanine isomers. These compounds have applications in organic photovoltaics and optical data storage. Cross-peak oscillations originate from a vibrational wave packet in the electronically excited state of the photoproduct. This concept isolates the isomerization dynamics along different vibrational coordinates assigned by quantum-chemical calculations, and is applicable to determine chemical dynamics in complex photoreactive networks.

The linear and nonlinear optical response of molecular hetero-dimers and their composing perylene units is explored with fluorometry, steady-state and transient absorption, and coherent two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy. Supported by a Förster theory approach and ab initio calculations, we disclose the photoinduced dynamics comprising excitonic coupling, conformational changes, charge transfer, and relaxation dynamics. The influence of the actual orientation of the two chromophore units on these processes is investigated by employing two bichromophores built of the same monomeric units but linked differently.

Ultraviolet irradiation of a manganese-tricarbonyl CO-releasing molecule (CORM) in water eventually leads to the liberation of some of the carbon monoxide ligands. By ultraviolet pump/mid-infrared probe femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations, we could disclose for the exemplary compound [Mn(CO)3(tpm)](+) (tpm = tris(2-pyrazolyl)methane) that only one of the three carbonyl ligands is photochemically dissociated on an ultrafast time scale and that some molecules may undergo geminate recombination.

Trihalide anions are linear molecules that can be photodissociated with ultraviolet (UV) light. Whereas deep-UV excitation leads to three-body dissociation, for near-UV excitation just one molecular bond is cleaved, which notionally opens up the possibility for different fragmentation patterns. Here, we explore whether the dihalide fragment is formed as an anionic or neutral species and whether heteronuclear trihalides can lead to two different dihalides. The analysis is based on pronounced wavepacket dynamics induced by femtosecond UV pulses and associated both with the initial trihalide and the nascent dihalide species. For the trihalide anions I3−, Br3−, IBr2−, and ICl2− (point group D∞h), as well as for I2Br− and I2Cl− (point group C∞v) in dichloromethane solution, we identify dihalide fragments by their characteristic vibrational wavenumbers, which we achieve from globally fitting the vibrational wavepacket oscillations, considering a wavelength-dependent phase. No signature from neutral species is found right after excitation, hence there is only one diatomic product in D∞h trihalides. For the investigated C∞v trihalides, which could allow a homonuclear and a heteronuclear product, only the homonuclear one is observed. Since dihalide anions are unstable intermediates, their absorption and the ground-state bleach of the trihalide anion show a biexponential recovery for all samples due to recombining fragment pairs. The rate of the electron transfer yielding a neutral dihalogen and an atomic anion, a prerequisite for the recombination, gives rise to the biexponential behavior; fast recombination is mediated by vibrational excess energy, while slow recombination occurs for cooled-down dihalogens. These data reveal the fragmentation and recombination dynamics from a time-domain approach rather than frequency-domain vibrational spectroscopy and contribute to the in-depth comprehension of these versatile model molecules.

An intermediate H-bonded complex formed in MeOH/MeCN solvent mixtures between photogenerated diphenylcarbene and a MeOH molecule is identified, both in theory and experiment. The complex is the ultrafast analog of findings at cryogenic temperatures.

Photochemical reactions in solution often proceed via competing reaction pathways comprising intermediates that capture a solvent molecule. A disclosure of the underlying reaction mechanisms is challenging due to the rapid nature of these processes and the intricate identification of how many solvent molecules are involved. Here combining broadband femtosecond transient absorption and quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics simulations, we show for one of the most reactive species, diphenylcarbene, that the decision-maker is not the nearest solvent molecule but its neighbour. The hydrogen bonding dynamics determine which reaction channels are accessible in binary solvent mixtures at room temperature. In-depth analysis of the amount of nascent intermediates corroborates the importance of a hydrogen-bonded complex with a protic solvent molecule, in striking analogy to complexes found at cryogenic temperatures. Our results show that adjacent solvent molecules take the role of key abettors rather than bystanders for the fate of the reactive intermediate., Photochemistry in solution often involves coexisting reaction channels that may comprise intermediates capturing a solvent molecule. The photodynamics in symmetric and unsymmetric β-diketones are studied with transient absorption in the deep-UV. Excitation leads to ultrafast ESIPT while further relaxation and isomerization processes depend on the molecular symmetry and solvent environment.

We report the photochemistry of two ring-open isomers, namely TTC and TTT, of a bidirectional photoswitchable spiropyran, 6,8-dinitro-1',3',3'-trimethylspiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline] (6,8-dinitro BIPS). Both isomers are capable of ring closure after excitation with visible fs laser pulses, as disclosed by pump-wavelength-dependent transient absorption experiments in the visible spectral range. The main isomer TTC has its maximum absorption at 560 nm, whereas the minor isomer TTT is red-shifted (600 nm). The excited-state lifetimes differ strongly (τ ≈ 900 ps for TTT and τ ≈ 95 ps for TTC), nevertheless the quantum efficiencies for ring closure (40% for TTC and 35% for TTT) and isomerization (1-2% for TTC and 1-2% for TTT) are comparable. With regard to the bidirectional photoswitching capabilities, 6,8-dinitro BIPS is the first molecular switch based on a 6π-electrocyclic reaction where both ring-open isomers are capable of ring closure.

We report on bidirectional photochemical switching of 6,8-dinitro-1',3',3'-trimethylspiro[2H-1-benzopyran-2,2'-indoline] (6,8-dinitro-BIPS) between the ring-closed spiropyran and the ring-open merocyanine form. We disclose the light-induced dynamics and ultrafast formation of several photoproducts from the manifold of reaction pathways in the photochemistry of 5-diazo Meldrum's acid (DMA), a photoactive compound used in lithography, by femtosecond mid-infrared transient absorption spectroscopy covering several nanoseconds. After excitation of DMA dissolved in methanol to the second excited state S(2), 70% of excited molecules relax back to the S(0) ground state. In competing processes, they can undergo an intramolecular Wolff rearrangement to form ketene, which reacts with a solvent molecule to an enol intermediate and further to carboxylate ester, or they first relax to the DMA S(1) state, from where they can isomerize to a diazirine and via an intersystem crossing to a triplet carbene. For a reliable identification of the involved compounds, density functional theory calculations on the normal modes and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy of the reactant and the photoproducts in the chemical equilibrium accompany the analysis of the transient spectra. Additional experiments in ethanol and 2-propanol lead to slight spectral shifts as well as elongated time constants due to steric hindrance in transient spectra connected with the ester formation channel, further substantiating the assignment of the occurring reaction pathways and photoproducts.

Femtosecond vortex beams with adjustable temporal pulse shapes are generated. These shaped laser pulses are characterized in the spectral domain by determination of the spectral amplitude and phase as well as in the spatial domain by expansion of the beam profile in a superposition of Laguerre-Gaussian transversal laser modes. The experiments demonstrate that the temporal pulse shapes impressed with a pulse shaper based on a programmable liquid-crystal spatial light modulator are basically unaltered by subsequent transmission through a spiral phase plate, while a high-quality optical vortex is imposed. The combination of programmable pulse shapes and optical vortices in femtosecond laser beams opens new possibilities for applications in micromachining, high harmonic generation, and microscopy.

Ultrafast lasers are versatile tools used in many scientific areas, from welding to eye surgery. They are also used to coherently manipulate light–matter interactions such as chemical reactions, but so far control experiments have concentrated on cleavage or rearrangement of existing molecular bonds. Here we demonstrate the synthesis of several molecular species starting from small reactant molecules in laser-induced catalytic surface reactions, and even the increase of the relative reaction efficiency by feedback-optimized laser pulses. We show that the control mechanism is nontrivial and sensitive to the relative proportion of the reactants. The control experiments open up a pathway towards photocatalysis and are relevant for research in physics, chemistry, and biology where light-induced bond formation is important.

International audience; At the microscopic level, multidimensional response functions, such as the nonlinear optical susceptibility or the time-ordered response function, are commonly used tools in nonlinear optical spectroscopy for determining the nonlinear polarization resulting from an arbitrary excitation. In this Account, we point out that the approach successfully developed for the nonlinear polarization can also be used in the case of a directly observable macroscopic quantity. This observable can be, for example, the electric field radiated in a nonlinear mixing experiment, the rate of fluorescence resulting from one- or two-photon absorption, or the rate of a photochemical reaction. For each of these physical processes, perturbation theory can be used to expand the measured quantity in a power series of the exciting field, and an appropriate global response function can be introduced for each order of perturbation. At order n, the multidimensional response function will depend on n variables (either time or frequency) and have the same general properties as the nonlinear susceptibility resulting, for example, from time invariance or causality. The global response function is introduced in this Account in close analogy with the nonlinear susceptibility or the time-ordered microscopic response. We discuss various applications of the global response function formalism. For example, it can be shown that in the weak field limit, a stationary signal induced in a time-invariant system is independent of the spectral phase of the exciting field. Although this result had been demonstrated previously, the global response function enables its derivation in a more general way because no specific microscopic model is needed. Multidimensional spectroscopy is obviously ideally suited to measure the global multidimensional response function. It is shown that the second (or third)-order response can be exactly measured with 2D (or 3D) spectroscopy by taking into account the exact shape of the exciting pulses. In the case of a 2D measurement of the third-order response, a particular projection of the complete 3D response function is actually measured. This projection can be related to a mixed time and frequency representation of the response function when the pulses are assumed to be infinitely short. We thus show that the global response function is a useful tool for deriving general results and that it should help in designing future experimental schemes for femtosecond spectroscopy. We experimentally demonstrate a method to generate shaped femtosecond laser pulses in the ultraviolet at a central wavelength of 267 nm, the third harmonic of conventional titanium-sapphire femtosecond laser systems. Employing a 128-pixel liquid-crystal spatial light modulator, we impose variable spectral phase modulations upon the near-infrared laser pulses. By this, complex laser pulses can be shaped whose overall spectrum is still conserved. Our experiments show that it is possible to easily transfer these pulses into the ultraviolet at 267 nm via sum-frequency mixing in nonlinear crystals and to predictably generate multistructured ultraviolet femtosecond laser pulses. We analyze the temporal and spectral composition of these pulses after frequency conversion into the ultraviolet using difference-frequency cross-correlation and XFROG (cross-correlation frequency-resolved optical gating) techniques with an unmodulated fundamental laser pulse. The method can be employed to facilitate adaptive quantum control experiments in the ultraviolet wavelength regime, where the major absorption bands of many organic molecular systems are located.

Coherent multidimensional electronic spectroscopy can be employed to unravel various channels in molecular chemical reactions. This approach is thus not limited to analysis of energy transfer or charge transfer (i.e. processes from photophysics), but can also be employed in situations where the investigated system undergoes permanent structural changes (i.e. in photochemistry). Photochemical model reactions are discussed by using the example of merocyanine/spiropyran-based molecular switches, which show a rich variety of reaction channels, in particular ring opening and ring closing, cis-trans isomerization, coherent vibrational wave-packet motion, radical ion formation, and population relaxation. Using pump-probe, pump-repump-probe, coherent two-dimensional and three-dimensional, triggered-exchange 2D, and quantum-control spectroscopy, we gain intuitive pictures on which product emerges from which reactant and which reactive molecular modes are associated.
