Purpose: The craniometrics of head circumference (HC) and ventricular size are part of the clinical assessment of infants with hydrocephalus and are often utilized in conjunction with other clinical and radiological parameters to determine the success of treatment. We aimed to assess the effect of endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) and shunting on craniometric measurements during the follow-up of a cohort of infants with symptomatic triventricular hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis. Methods: We performed a post hoc analysis of data from the International Infant Hydrocephalus Study (IIHS)-a prospective, multicenter study of infants (< 24 months old) with hydrocephalus from aqueductal stenosis who were treated with either an ETV or shunt. During various stages of a 5-year follow-up period, the following craniometrics were measured: HC, HC centile, HC z-score, and frontal-occipital horn ratio (FOR). Data were compared in an analysis of covariance, adjusting for baseline variables including age at surgery and sex. Results: Of 158 enrolled patients, 115 underwent an ETV, while 43 received a shunt. Both procedures led to improvements in the mean HC centile position and z-score, a trend which continued until the 5-year assessment point. A similar trend was noted for FOR which was measured at 12 months and 3 years following initial treatment. Although the values were consistently higher for ETV compared with shunt, the differences in HC value, centile, and z-score were not significant. ETV was associated with a significantly higher FOR compared with shunting at 12 months (0.52 vs 0.44; p = 0.002) and 3 years (0.46 vs 0.38; p = 0.03) of follow-up. Conclusion: ETV and shunting led to improvements in HC centile, z-score, and FOR measurements during long-term follow-up of infants with hydrocephalus secondary to aqueductal stenosis. Head size did not significantly differ between the treatment groups during follow-up, however ventricle size was greater in those undergoing ETV when measured at 1 and 3 years following treatment.

We discuss challenges experienced with a discrete choice experiment where the lack of sufficient responses to power analysis may have been due to the vulnerability of the population, added caregiving burdens imposed by the pandemic, and an imbalance of benefit-to-load of participation. We also address considerations for the paradigm where the necessarily few testable attributes may limit cultural meaningfulness and generalizability, and bring into question principles of research ethics.

Empirical research on type of education shows that vocational education is advantageous early in the career but that general education may be of benefit later on. To what degree this is shaped by employers’ preference, however, has not received much attention in the literature. This paper seeks to delve into how employers perceive vocational education as opposed to general, and how this perception may vary based on the gender and age of a job candidate. We use a factorial survey experiment of employers and HR managers in Switzerland, where respondents assigned a likelihood of inviting candidates to a job interview who, among other dimensions, varied randomly on their age, gender, and type of education. We find an overall preference for vocational over general education at the tertiary level, but not at the upper-secondary. This is stronger for female candidates than male at the tertiary level. In northern Illinois, chronic wasting disease (CWD) was first identified in free-ranging white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus; hereafter referred to as "deer") in 2002. To reduce CWD transmission rates in Illinois, wildlife biologists have conducted locally focussed culling of deer since 2003 in areas where CWD has been detected. We used retrospective spatial, temporal and space-time scan statistical models to identify areas and periods where culling removed higher than expected numbers of CWD-positive deer. Factorial Survey Analysis (FSA) is an analytical tool that presents respondents with fictional situations (“vignettes”) to be rated or judged. In this paper we study the use of FSA in labour market sociology, with a particular focus on employer-based surveys, and what they can teach us about hiring preferences. FSA is useful in this context as it targets employers directly and comes close to a causal design. This review article seeks to pinpoint the contributions FSA has made to the field, identify its limits and propose topics in which it may be useful.

We make use of recent developments in the analysis of galaxy redshift surveys to present an easy to use matrix-based analysis framework for the galaxy power spectrum multipoles, including wide-angle effects and the survey window function. We employ this framework to derive the deconvolved power spectrum multipoles of 6dFGS DR3, BOSS DR12 and the eBOSS DR16 quasar sample. As an alternative to the standard analysis, the deconvolved power spectrum multipoles can be used to perform a data analysis agnostic of survey specific aspects, like the window function. We show that in the case of the BOSS dataset, the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) analysis using the deconvolved power spectra results in the same likelihood as the standard analysis. To facilitate the analysis based on both the convolved and deconvolved power spectrum measurements, we provide the window function matrices, wide-angle matrices, covariance matrices and the power spectrum multipole measurements for the datasets mentioned above. Together with this paper we publish a \code{Python}-based toolbox to calculate the different analysis components. The appendix contains a detailed user guide with examples for how a cosmological analysis of these datasets could be implemented. Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) programs are most successful at supporting youth labor markets when they combine education and employment. Education–employment linkage theory describes this combination in terms of power-sharing between actors from the education system and their counterparts in the employment system over key processes in the curriculum value chain of curriculum design, curriculum application (program delivery), and curriculum updating. The Education–Employment Linkage Index measures linkage for every function in a TVET program where actors from the two systems interact, aggregating those into processes and phases and eventually an index score. We apply this index to the largest upper-secondary TVET programs in Benin, Chile, Costa Rica, and Nepal. We find that Benin has relatively high education–employment linkage, while the other three countries score very low. Benin’s situation is unique because its TVET program is moving from employer-led to linked, rather than the typical employer integration into an education-based program. Other countries with large informal economies, low formal education and training rates, and existing non-formal employer-led training may be able to implement similar approaches.

We present a Gaussian process emulator modelling the 1D flux power spectrum as a function of the amplitude and slope of the small-scale linear matter power spectrum, and the state of the intergalactic medium at the epoch of interest (2 l z l 4). This parameterisation enables the prediction of the flux power spectrum in extended cosmological models that are not explicitly included in the training set, eliminating the need to construct bespoke emulators for a number of extensions to ΛCDM. Our emulator is appropriate for cosmologies in which the linear matter power spectrum is described to percent level accuracy by just an amplitude and slope across the epoch of interest, and in the regime probed by eBOSS/DESI data. We demonstrate this for massive neutrino cosmologies, where the emulator is able to predict the flux power spectrum in a Σ mν=0.3 eV neutrino cosmology to sub-percent accuracy, without including massive neutrinos in the training simulations. Further parameters would be required to describe models with sharp features in the linear power, such as warm or light axion dark matter. This work will facilitate the combination of upcoming DESI data with observations of the cosmic microwave background, to obtain constraints on neutrino mass and other extensions to ΛCDM cosmology.

Objective: Islets from the same pancreas show remarkable variability in glucose sensitivity. While mitochondrial respiration is essential for glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, little is known regarding heterogeneity in mitochondrial function at the individual islet level. This is due in part to a lack of high-throughput and non-invasive methods for detecting single islet function. Methods: We have developed a novel non-invasive, high-throughput methodology capable of assessing mitochondrial respiration in large-sized individual islets using the XF96 analyzer (Agilent Technologies). Results: By increasing measurement sensitivity, we have reduced the minimal size of mouse and human islets needed to assess mitochondrial respiration to single large islets of >35,000 μm2 area (∼210 μm diameter). In addition, we have measured heterogeneous glucose-stimulated mitochondrial respiration among individual human and mouse islets from the same pancreas, allowing population analyses of islet mitochondrial function for the first time. Conclusions: We have developed a novel methodology capable of analyzing mitochondrial function in large-sized individual islets. By highlighting islet functional heterogeneity, we hope this methodology can significantly advance islet research. Keywords: Islets, Mitochondria, Respirometry, Glucose

Two experiments investigated the effects of the number of health recommendations (e.g., quit smoking; relax for a day) contained in a health-promotion message on recommendation recall and intentions to enact the recommendations. We hypothesized that if recommendations are stored individually, a higher number of presented recommendations will increase the number of recalled recommendations. As the number of recommendations increases, however, recipients are likely to summarize more recommendations as part of a single, more general theme (or header), resulting in a decrease in the proportion of recalled recommendations. Two experiments ( N = 193 and N = 266) found that the total number of recalled recommendations increased and the proportion of recalled recommendations decreased with the number of presented recommendations. Experiment 2 replicated the findings with the number and the proportion of intended behaviors. The implications of these findings for future behavioral health interventions are discussed.

We give upper bounds on the principal Dirichlet eigenvalue associated to a smoothly bounded domain in a complete Riemannian manifold; the bounds involve L1-norms of exit time moments of Brownian motion. Our results generalize a classical inequality of Polya. We also prove lower bounds for Dirichlet eigenvalues using invariants that arise during the examination of the relationship between the heat content and exit time moments.

Evaluation of likelihood functions for cosmological large scale structure data sets (including CMB, galaxy redshift surveys, etc.) naturally involves marginalization, i.e., integration, over an unknown underlying random signal field. Recently, I showed how a renormalization group method can be used to carry out this integration efficiently by first integrating out the smallest scale structure, i.e., localized structure on the scale of differences between nearby data cells, then combining adjacent cells in a coarse graining step, then repeating this process over and over until all scales have been integrated. Here I extend the formulation in several ways in order to reduce the prefactor on the method's linear scaling with data set size. The key improvement is showing how to integrate out the difference between specific adjacent cells before summing them in the coarse graining step, compared to the original formulation in which small-scale fluctuations were integrated more generally. I suggest some other improvements in details of the scheme, including showing how to perform the integration around a maximum likelihood estimate for the underlying random field. In the end, an accurate likelihood computation for a million-cell Gaussian test data set runs in two minutes on my laptop, with room for further optimization and straightforward parallelization., 10 pg, 2 fig

Background: Neoantigens arising from somatic mutations are attractive targets for cancer immunotherapy as they may be recognized as foreign by the immune system. RO7198457 is a systemically administered RNA-Lipoplex iNeST designed to stimulate T cell responses against neoantigens. A first-in-human Phase Ia study of RO7198457 was conducted in patients with locally advanced or metastatic solid tumors. Methods: RO7198457 is manufactured on a per-patient basis and contains up to 20 patient- specific neoantigens. Nine doses of RO7198457 were administered i.v. at weekly and bi-weekly intervals during the 12-week induction stage and every 24 weeks during the maintenance stage. Results: In total, 29 patients enrolled in cohorts with doses ranging from 25-100 μg. The most common tumor types were HR+/HER2+ breast, prostate, and ovarian cancer. The median number of prior therapies was 5 (range 1-17). 34% of patients received prior immunotherapy. Most patients had low PD-L1 expression (97% patients with Conclusion: RO7198457 can be manufactured for individual patients with clinically relevant turn-around times. RO7198457 has a manageable safety profile consistent with its mechanism of action, and induced strong neoantigen-specific immune responses in patients with low and intermediate mutational load tumors types. A Ph1b study in combination with atezolizumab and a randomized Ph2 study of RO7198457 in 1L melanoma patients with pembrolizumab have been initiated, and two randomized clinical trials are planned in resected lung and CRC. Using a suite of hydrodynamical simulations with cold dark matter, baryons, and neutrinos, we present a detailed study of the effect of massive neutrinos on the 1-D and 3-D flux power spectra of the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest. The presence of massive neutrinos in cosmology induces a scale- and time-dependent suppression of structure formation that is strongest on small scales. Measuring this suppression is a key method for inferring neutrino masses from cosmological data, and is one of the main goals of ongoing and future surveys like eBOSS, DES, LSST, Euclid or DESI. The clustering in the Ly$\alpha$ forest traces the quasi-linear power at late times and on small scales. In combination with observations of the cosmic microwave background, the forest therefore provides some of the tightest constraints on the sum of the neutrino masses. However there is a well-known degeneracy between $\Sigma m_{\nu}$ and the amplitude of perturbations in the linear matter power spectrum. We study the corresponding degeneracy in the 1-D flux power spectrum of the Ly$\alpha$ forest, and for the first time also study this degeneracy in the 3-D flux power spectrum. We show that the non-linear effects of massive neutrinos on the Ly$\alpha$ forest, beyond the effect of linear power amplitude suppression, are negligible, and this degeneracy persists in the Ly$\alpha$ forest observables to a high precision. We suggest an approach to perturbative calculations of large-scale clustering in the Universe that includes from the start the stream crossing (multiple velocities for mass elements at a single position) that is lost in traditional calculations. Starting from a functional integral over displacement, the perturbative series expansion is in deviations from (truncated) Zel'dovich evolution, with terms that can be computed exactly even for stream-crossed displacements. We evaluate the one-loop formulas for displacement and density power spectra numerically in 1D, finding dramatic improvement in agreement with N-body simulations compared to the Zel'dovich power spectrum (which is exact in 1D up to stream crossing). Beyond 1D, our approach could represent an improvement over previous expansions even aside from the inclusion of stream crossing, but we have not investigated this numerically. Background: Survey-based research finds a sizeable unexplained wage gap between mothers and nonmothers in affluent countries. The source of this wage gap is unclear: It can stem either from the unobserved effects of motherhood on productivity or from employer discrimination against mothers. Objective: This paper opens the black box of the motherhood wage gap by directly measuring discrimination in Switzerland based on two complementary methods. Methods: We first use two longitudinal population surveys to establish the size of the wage residual for motherhood. We then run a factorial survey experiment among HR managers (N=714) whom we asked to assign a starting wage to the résumés of fictitious job candidates. Results: The population surveys show an unexplained wage penalty per child of 4Š to 8Š. The factorial survey experiment shows that recruiters assign wages to mothers that are 2Š to 3Š below those of nonmothers. The wage penalty is larger for younger mothers, 6Š for ages 40 and less, but disappears for older mothers or mothers in a blue-collar occupation. Conclusions: The motherhood wage gap found in panel studies cannot be reduced to unobserved dimensions of work productivity. The experimental evidence shows that recruiters discriminate against mothers. Contribution: Our paper's novelty is to uncover wage discrimination against mothers by combining two different methods. Our national panel surveys mirror the supply side of the labor market and provide us with strong external validity. The factorial survey experiment on recruiters informs on the demand side of the labor market and shows a causal effect.

We analyse the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) signal of the final Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) data release (DR12). Our analysis is performed in the Fourier space, using the power spectrum monopole and quadrupole. The data set includes 1198 006 galaxies over the redshift range 0.2 < z < 0.75.We divide this data set into three (overlapping) redshift bins with the effective redshifts zeff = 0.38, 0.51 and 0.61. We demonstrate the reliability of our analysis pipeline using N-body simulations as well as ~1000 MultiDark- Patchy mock catalogues that mimic the BOSS-DR12 target selection. We apply density field reconstruction to enhance the BAO signal-to-noise ratio. By including the power spectrum quadrupole we can separate the line of sight and angular modes, which allows us to constrain the angular diameter distance DA(z) and the Hubble parameter H(z) separately. We obtain two independent 1.6 and 1.5 per cent constraints on DA(z) and 2.9 and 2.3 per cent constraints on H(z) for the low (zeff = 0.38) and high (zeff = 0.61) redshift bin, respectively. We obtain two independent 1 and 0.9 per cent constraints on the angular averaged distance DV(z), when ignoring the Alcock-Paczynski effect. The detection significance of the BAO signal is of the order of 8σ (post-reconstruction) for each of the three redshift bins. Our results are in good agreement with the Planck prediction within Λ cold dark matter. This paper is part of a set that analyses the final galaxy clustering data set from BOSS. The measurements and likelihoods presented here are combined with others in Alam et al. to produce the final cosmological constraints from BOSS.

We present a Bayesian phase-space reconstruction of the cosmic large-scale matter density and velocity fields from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillations Spectroscopic Survey Data Release 12 (BOSS DR12) CMASS galaxy clustering catalogue. We rely on a given $\Lambda$CDM cosmology, a mesh resolution in the range of 6-10 $h^{-1}$ Mpc, and a lognormal-Poisson model with a redshift dependent nonlinear bias. The bias parameters are derived from the data and a general renormalised perturbation theory approach. We use combined Gibbs and Hamiltonian sampling, implemented in the \textsc{argo} code, to iteratively reconstruct the dark matter density field and the coherent peculiar velocities of individual galaxies, correcting hereby for coherent redshift space distortions (RSD). Our tests relying on accurate $N$-body based mock galaxy catalogues, show unbiased real space power spectra of the nonlinear density field up to $k\sim0.2\, h$ Mpc$^{-1}$, and vanishing quadrupoles down to $r\sim20\,h^{-1}$ Mpc. We also demonstrate that the nonlinear cosmic web can be obtained from the tidal field tensor based on the Gaussian component of the reconstructed density field. We find that the reconstructed velocities have a statistical correlation coefficient compared to the true velocities of each individual lightcone mock galaxy of $r\sim0.68$ including about 10% of satellite galaxies with virial motions (about $r=0.75$ without satellites). The power spectra of the velocity divergence agree well with theoretical predictions up to $k\sim0.2\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. Cosmic voids found in galaxy surveys are defined based on the galaxy distribution in redshift space. We show that the large scale distribution of voids in redshift space traces the fluctuations in the dark matter density field \delta(k) (in Fourier space with \mu being the line of sight projected k-vector): \delta_v^s(k) = (1 + \beta_v \mu^2) b^s_v \delta(k), with a beta factor that will be in general different than the one describing the distribution of galaxies. Only in case voids could be assumed to be quasi-local transformations of the linear (Gaussian) galaxy redshift space field, one gets equal beta factors \beta_v=\beta_g=f/b_g with f being the growth rate, and b_g, b^s_v being the galaxy and void bias on large scales defined in redshift space. Indeed, in our mock void catalogs we measure void beta factors being in good agreement with the galaxy one. Further work needs to be done to confirm the level of accuracy of the beta factor equality between voids and galaxies, but in general the void beta factor needs to be considered as a free parameter for RSD studies., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures; matches the version accepted by PRD

We perform the covariant canonical quantization of the CPT- and Lorentz-symmetry-violating photon sector of the minimal Standard-Model Extension, which contains a general (timelike, lightlike, or spacelike) fixed background tensor $k_{AF}^\mu$. Well-known stability issues, arising from complex-valued energy states, are solved by introducing a small photon mass, orders of magnitude below current experimental bounds. We explicitly construct a covariant basis of polarization vectors, in which the photon field can be expanded. We proceed to derive the Feynman propagator and show that the theory is microcausal. Despite the occurrence of negative energies and vacuum-Cherenkov radiation, we do not find any runaway stability issues, because the energy remains bounded from below. An important observation is that the ordering of the roots of the dispersion relations is the same in any observer frame, which allows for a frame-independent condition that selects the correct branch of the dispersion relation. This turns out to be critical for the consistency of the quantization. To our knowledge, this is the first system for which quantization has consistently been performed, in spite of the fact that the theory contains negative energies in some observer frames., Comment: 38 pages, 2 figures

Rotation of an upper limb joint produces excitatory stretch reflex peaks M1 and M2 in the stretched muscles and simultaneous decrease in electromyographic (EMG) activity in the shortened muscles. The objective of this study was to examine whether the decreased activity in the antagonists (rINHIB) is purely from unloading of the spindles or receives active inhibition involving inhibitory interneurons. If rINHIB is due only to unloading, then the termination of rINHIB should vary with the duration of perturbation used to elicit stretch reflex, namely shorter stretches should result in shorter values of decreased periods of EMG. To examine this question, rectangular pulses, ranging in duration from 25 to 150 ms, were used to stretch wrist flexors or extensors with a torque motor. These rectangular pulses resulted in joint rotations which peaked at times (T peak) ranging from approximately 75–160 ms. As shown by previous authors, when the duration of rotation was shortened, the magnitude of M1 did not change, while the magnitude of M2 decreased. However, termination time of rINHIB in the shortened muscles did not change with change in T peak, implying thereby that unloading of spindles of the antagonist muscles is not the only mechanism for the reduction in activity and that inhibitory reflex pathways most likely contribute. Possible sources of inhibition are discussed for the short- and long-latency inhibition.

The source of CPT-violation in the photon sector of the Standard Model Extension arises from a Chern-Simons-like contribution that involves a coupling to a fixed background vector field $k_{AF}^\mu$. These Lorentz- and CPT-violating photons have well-known theoretical issues that arise from missing states at low momenta when $k_{AF}^\mu$ is timelike. In order to make the theory consistent, a tiny mass for the photon can be introduced, well below current experimental bounds. The implementation of canonical quantization can then be implemented as in the CPT-preserving case by using the St\"uckelberg mechanism. We explicitly construct a covariant basis of properly-normalized polarization vectors at fixed three-momentum satisfying the momentum space field equations, in terms of which the vector field can be expanded. As an application of the theory, we calculate the Cherenkov radiation rate for the case of purely timelike $k_{AF}^\mu$, and find a radiation rate at high energies that has a contribution that does not depend on the mass used to regulate the photons.

Author(s): Schmittfull, M; Vlah, Z; McDonald, P | Abstract: The usual fluid equations describing the large-scale evolution of mass density in the universe can be written as local in the density, velocity divergence, and velocity potential fields. As a result, the perturbative expansion in small density fluctuations, usually written in terms of convolutions in Fourier space, can be written as a series of products of these fields evaluated at the same location in configuration space. Based on this, we establish a new method to numerically evaluate the 1-loop power spectrum (i.e.; Fourier transform of the 2-point correlation function) with one-dimensional fast Fourier transforms. This is exact and a few orders of magnitude faster than previously used numerical approaches. Numerical results of the new method are in excellent agreement with the standard quadrature integration method. This fast model evaluation can in principle be extended to higher loop order where existing codes become painfully slow. Our approach follows by writing higher order corrections to the 2-point correlation function as, e.g.; the correlation between two second-order fields or the correlation between a linear and a third-order field. These are then decomposed into products of correlations of linear fields and derivatives of linear fields. The method can also be viewed as evaluating three-dimensional Fourier space convolutions using products in configuration space, which may also be useful in other contexts where similar integrals appear.

We introduce FastPM, a highly-scalable approximated particle mesh N-body solver, which implements the particle mesh (PM) scheme enforcing correct linear displacement (1LPT) evolution via modified kick and drift factors. Employing a 2-dimensional domain decomposing scheme, FastPM scales extremely well with a very large number of CPUs. In contrast to COmoving-LAgrangian (COLA) approach, we do not require to split the force or track separately the 2LPT solution, reducing the code complexity and memory requirements. We compare FastPM with different number of steps ($N_s$) and force resolution factor ($B$) against 3 benchmarks: halo mass function from Friends of Friends halo finder, halo and dark matter power spectrum, and cross correlation coefficient (or stochasticity), relative to a high resolution TreePM simulation. We show that the modified time stepping scheme reduces the halo stochasticity when compared to COLA with the same number of steps and force resolution. While increasing $N_s$ and $B$ improves the transfer function and cross correlation coefficient, for many applications FastPM achieves sufficient accuracy at low $N_s$ and $B$. For example, $N_s=10$ and $B=2$ simulation provides a substantial saving (a factor of 10) of computing time relative to $N_s=40$, $B=3$ simulation, yet the halo benchmarks are very similar at $z=0$. We find that for abundance matched halos the stochasticity remains low even for $N_s=5$. FastPM compares well against less expensive schemes, being only 7 (4) times more expensive than 2LPT initial condition generator for $N_s=10$ ($N_s=5$). Some of the applications where FastPM can be useful are generating a large number of mocks, producing non-linear statistics where one varies a large number of nuisance or cosmological parameters, or serving as part of an initial conditions solver., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures. We establish comparison theorems involving exit time moments for Brownian motion and eigenvalues for the Dirichlet problem for domains in a complete Riemannian manifold. These theorems are closely related to isoperimetric properties of the ambient manifold.

Clostridium difficile associated diarrhoea has been an increasing problem in the last decade in the UK and is a cause of significant morbidity. At the most severe end of the spectrum it causes pseudomembranous colitis which has a significant associated mortality rate and can be refractory to standard treatments. Here we present three cases of proven pseudomembranous colitis in which systemic corticosteroids were used as an adjunct to treatment, raising the possibility of a new treatment option for this difficult condition.

We revisit the uncertainty in baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) forecasts and data analyses. In particular, we study how much the uncertainties on both the measured mean dilation scale and the associated error bar are affected by the non-Gaussianity of the non-linear density field. We examine two possible impacts of non-Gaussian analysis: (1) we derive the distance estimators from Gaussian theory, but use 1000 N-Body simulations to measure the actual errors, and compare this to the Gaussian prediction, and (2) we compute new optimal estimators, which requires the inverse of the non-Gaussian covariance matrix of the matter power spectrum. Obtaining an accurate and precise inversion is challenging, and we opted for a noise reduction technique applied on the covariance matrices. By measuring the bootstrap error on the inverted matrix, this work quantifies for the first time the significance of the non-Gaussian error corrections on the BAO dilation scale. We find that the variance (error squared) on distance measurements can deviate by up to 12% between both estimators, an effect that requires a large number of simulations to be resolved. We next apply a reconstruction algorithm to recover some of the BAO signal that had been smeared by non-linear evolution, and we rerun the analysis. We find that after reconstruction, the rms error on the distance measurement improves by a factor of ~1.7 at low redshift (consistent with previous results), and the variance ({\sigma}^2) shows a change of up to 18% between optimal and sub-optimal cases (note, however, that these discrepancies may depend in detail on the procedure used to isolate the BAO signal). We finally discuss the impact of this work on current data analyses.

We derive and numerically implement an algorithm for estimating the 3D power spectrum of the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly-$\alpha$) forest flux fluctuations. The algorithm exploits the unique geometry of Ly-$\alpha$ forest data to efficiently measure the cross-spectrum between lines of sight as a function of parallel wavenumber, transverse separation and redshift. The key to fast evaluation is to approximate the global covariance matrix as block-diagonal, where only pixels from the same spectrum are correlated. We then compute the eigenvectors of the derivative of the signal covariance with respect to cross-spectrum parameters, and project the inverse-covariance-weighted spectra onto them. This acts much like a radial Fourier transform over redshift windows. The resulting cross-spectrum inference is then converted into our final product, an approximation of the likelihood for the 3D power spectrum expressed as second order Taylor expansion around a fiducial model. We demonstrate the accuracy and scalability of the algorithm and comment on possible extensions. Long-term precise timing of Galactic millisecond pulsars holds great promise for measuring the long-period (months-to-years) astrophysical gravitational waves. Several gravitational-wave observational programs, called Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTA), are being pursued around the world. Here we develop a Bayesian algorithm for measuring the stochastic gravitational-wave background (GWB) from the PTA data. Our algorithm has several strengths: (1) It analyses the data without any loss of information, (2) It trivially removes systematic errors of known functional form, including quadratic pulsar spin-down, annual modulations and jumps due to a change of equipment, (3) It measures simultaneously both the amplitude and the slope of the GWB spectrum, (4) It can deal with unevenly sampled data and coloured pulsar noise spectra. We sample the likelihood function using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulations. We extensively test our approach on mock PTA datasets, and find that the algorithm has significant benefits over currently proposed counterparts. We show the importance of characterising all red noise components in pulsar timing noise by demonstrating that the presence of a red component would significantly hinder a detection of the GWB. Lastly, we explore the dependence of the signal-to-noise ratio on the duration of the experiment, number of monitored pulsars, and the magnitude of the pulsar timing noise. We study (relative) zeta regularized determinants of Laplace type operators on compact conic manifolds. We establish gluing formulae for relative zeta regularized determinants. For arbitrary self-adjoint extensions of the Laplace–Beltrami operator, we express the relative ζ-determinants for these as a ratio of the determinants of certain finite matrices. For the self-adjoint extensions corresponding to Dirichlet and Neumann conditions, the formula is particularly simple and elegant.

Several lagrangians associated to classical limits of lorenz-violating fermions in the Standard Model extension (SME) have been shown to yield Finsler functions when the theory is expressed in Euclidean space. When spin-couplings are present, the lagrangian can develop singularities that obstruct the construction of a globally defined Legendre transformation, leading to singular Finsler spaces. A specific sector of the SME where such problems arise is studied. It is found that the singular behavior can be eliminated by an appropriate lifting of the problem to an associated algebraic variety. This provides a smooth classical model for the singular problem. In Euclidean space, the procedure involves combining two related singular Finsler functions into a single smooth function with a semi-positive definite quadratic form defined on a desingularized variety., Comment: 11 pages

We measure the power spectrum, P_F(k,z), of the transmitted flux in the Ly-alpha forest using 3035 high redshift quasar spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. This sample is almost two orders of magnitude larger than any previously available data set, yielding statistical errors of ~0.6% and ~0.005 on, respectively, the overall amplitude and logarithmic slope of P_F(k,z). This unprecedented statistical power requires a correspondingly careful analysis of the data and of possible systematic contaminations in it. For this purpose we reanalyze the raw spectra to make use of information not preserved by the standard pipeline. We investigate the details of the noise in the data, resolution of the spectrograph, sky subtraction, quasar continuum, and metal absorption. We find that background sources such as metals contribute significantly to the total power and have to be subtracted properly. We also find clear evidence for SiIII correlations with the Ly-alpha forest and suggest a simple model to account for this contribution to the power. While it is likely that our newly developed analysis technique does not eliminate all systematic errors in the P_F(k,z) measurement below the level of the statistical errors, our tests indicate that any residual systematics in the analysis are unlikely to affect the inference of cosmological parameters from P_F(k,z). These results should provide an essential ingredient for all future attempts to constrain modeling of structure formation, cosmological parameters, and theories for the origin of primordial fluctuations.

We analyze the SDSS Ly-alpha forest P_F(k,z) measurement to determine the linear theory power spectrum. Our analysis is based on fully hydrodynamic simulations, extended using hydro-PM simulations. We account for the effect of absorbers with damping wings, which leads to an increase in the slope of the linear power spectrum. We break the degeneracy between the mean level of absorption and the linear power spectrum without significant use of external constraints. We infer linear theory power spectrum amplitude Delta^2_L(k_p=0.009s/km,z_p=3.0)=0.452_{-0.057-0.116}^{+0.069+0.141} and slope n_eff=-2.321_{-0.047-0.102}^{+0.055+0.131} (possible systematic errors are included through nuisance parameters in the fit - a factor >~5 smaller errors would be obtained on both parameters if we ignored modeling uncertainties). The errors are correlated and not perfectly Gaussian, so we provide a chi^2 table to accurately describe the results. The result corresponds to sigma_8=0.85, n=0.94, for a LCDM model with Omega_m=0.3, Omega_b=0.04, and h=0.7, but is most useful in a combined fit with the CMB. The inferred curvature of the linear power spectrum and the evolution of its amplitude and slope with redshift are consistent with expectations for LCDM models, with the evolution of the slope, in particular, being tightly constrained. We use this information to constrain systematic contamination, e.g., fluctuations in the UV background. This paper should serve as a starting point for more work to refine the analysis, including technical improvements such as increasing the size and number of the hydrodynamic simulations, and improvements in the treatment of the various forms of feedback from galaxies and quasars., Improved presentation, including fit results for (z). We explore several physical effects on the power spectrum of the Lyman-alpha forest transmitted flux. The effects we investigate here are usually not part of hydrodynamic simulations and so need to be estimated separately. The most important effect is that of high column density absorbers with damping wings, which add power on large scales. We compute their effect using the observational constraints on their abundance as a function of column density. Ignoring their effect leads to an underestimation of the slope of the linear theory power spectrum. The second effect we investigate is that of fluctuations in the ionizing radiation field. For this purpose we use a very large high resolution N-body simulation, which allows us to simulate both the fluctuations in the ionizing radiation and the small scale LyaF within the same simulation. We find an enhancement of power on large scales for quasars and a suppression for galaxies. The strength of the effect rapidly increases with increasing redshift, allowing it to be uniquely identified in cases where it is significant. We develop templates which can be used to search for this effect as a function of quasar lifetime, quasar luminosity function, and attenuation length. Finally, we explore the effects of galactic winds using hydrodynamic simulations. We find the wind effects on the LyaF power spectrum to be be degenerate with parameters related to the temperature of the gas that are already marginalized over in cosmological fits. While more work is needed to conclusively exclude all possible systematic errors, our results suggest that, in the context of data analysis procedures where parameters of the LyaF model are properly marginalized over, the flux power spectrum is a reliable tracer of cosmological information., 13 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted to MNRAS
