1. (Up)Grading: A (Re)Humanizing Assessment Process with a Focus on Feedback

Abstract

Researchers across two universities and three different mathematics education courses implemented their vision of a novel grading approach called (Up)grading. (Up)grading shifts the focus of assessment from grades to growth. Key features of implementing (Up)grading included (a) providing students with opportunities to reflect upon and grow from their learning experiences, and (b) giving them a voice in determining their course grade. The findings suggest that most students perceived (Up)grading as a positive experience in their learning and as an assessment approach. The features of (Up)grading students believed contributed to the positive experience included giving them opportunities to reflect on their work and learn from their mistakes, as well as targeted feedback, enabling them to independently move their thinking forward. Tensions in the process did arise, including students’ initial anxiety with the norm shift from grades to growth and instructors’ management of the flow of assignments.

Reimagining elementary mathematics pedagogy using a three-step process--See It, Say It, Symbolize It--author Patrick L. Sullivan provides a guide for developing a dynamic and flexible understanding of numbers and operations. By helping students develop a language that is consistent across concepts and connecting it to what is seen and symbolized, teachers empower their students to engage in reasoning they will utilize throughout their lives. This book will help K-5 educators: (1) Apply the See It, Say It, Symbolize It framework to foundational mathematical concepts and operations; (2) Reframe common mathematical language to increase students' conceptual understanding and make connections between ideas that are often seen as disconnected; (3) Compare the traditional process of communicating foundational mathematical ideas to the See It, Say It, Symbolize It process, with descriptive examples; (4) Comprehend the superpower understandings in elementary mathematics, which help students develop a dynamic and flexible understanding of numbers and operations as well as connect multiple concepts; and (5) Internalize chapter content with reflection prompts and end-of-chapter application guides.

3. Beware of 'Gaps' in Students' Fraction Conceptions

Abstract

This article describes the two types of reasoning in fraction conceptions that students often use, "gap" and "missing piece," and one that the authors aspire their students to reach, "residual." Each of these types of reasoning are underpinned by a different conception of fractions. Students who use "gap reasoning" to compare fractions are guided by a whole number conception of fractions, while those using "missing piece" utilize a part-whole conception of fractions. Meanwhile, those students who engage in "residual" reasoning to compare fractions utilize a fraction-as-measure conception. The focus of this article is three-fold: (1) to explain the fraction conception that underpins "gap" and "missing piece" reasoning; (2) to explain why this fraction conception can be problematic; and (3) to provide two instructional recommendations that support teachers in moving students beyond this reasoning and/or limit the potential of it happening.

A new draft NATO STANAG was released in 2001 for review by the member nations. Its purpose is to promote interoperability for the exchange of data among North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) Systems. This standard defines both the physical and logical interfaces needed to download data from new data storage devices into compliant ground stations. Abstract

The Tactical Disk Recording System (TDRS) is an electronic digital recording device. It is specifically designed to record imagery data. The TDRS is capable of reliable operation in various airborne environments including high performance military aircraft. The first TDRS application is the recording of Forward Looking Infrared video in the LANTIRN targeting pod that is flown on F-16s, F-15Es, and more recently F-14s. All the imagery and associated support data is stored to a removable 9 Gigabyte magnetic hard disk. The TDRS employs an internal JPEG compression engine that significantly enhances the available record time. The removable disk drive can be easily connected via a SCSI interface to a computer workstation. All the image and support data is stored in MS-DOS file formats, which facilitates easy viewing, evaluation, and distribution of the source data and derived work products. The magnetic disk technology has been successfully used on other military aircraft. It has demonstrated excellent reliability and it has proven to be a cost-effective means of non-volatile data storage. Abstract

"Twenty-nine items from existing scales of ethnic prejudice were rewritten so that the terms 'people' or 'most people' or 'humans' were substituted for the specific minorities originally designated. The scale thus constructed (termed M for misanthropy) was found to be correlated .43 (.53 when corrected for attenuation) with a 20-item version of the UC-POS scale for general ethnic intolerance.
