The chemical reactions underlying the emission of light in fireflies and other bioluminescent beetles are some of the most thoroughly studied processes by scientists worldwide. Despite these remarkable efforts, fierce academic arguments continue around even some of the most fundamental aspects of the reaction mechanism behind the beetle bioluminescence. In an attempt to reach a consensus, we made an exhaustive search of the available literature and compiled the key discoveries on the fluorescence and chemiluminescence spectrochemistry of the emitting molecule, the firefly oxyluciferin, and its chemical analogues reported over the past 50+ years. The factors that affect the light emission, including intermolecular interactions, solvent polarity, and electronic effects, were analyzed in the context of both the reaction mechanism and the different colors of light emitted by different luciferases. The collective data points toward a combined emission of multiple coexistent forms of oxyluciferin as the most probable explanation for the variation in color of the emitted light. We also highlight realistic research directions to eventually address some of the remaining questions related to firefly bioluminescence. It is our hope that this extensive compilation of data and detailed analysis will not only consolidate the existing body of knowledge on this important phenomenon but will also aid in reaching a wider consensus on some of the mechanistic details of firefly bioluminescence.

Mechanically compliant organic crystals are the foundation of the development of future flexible, light-weight single-crystal electronics, and this requires reversibly deformable crystalline organic materials with permanent magnetism. Here, we report and characterize the first instance of a plastically bendable single crystal of a permanent organic radical, 4-(4′-cyano-2′,3′,4′,5′-tetrafluorophenyl)-1,2,3,5-dithiadiazolyl. The weak interactions between the radicals render single crystals of the β phase of this material exceedingly soft, and the S–N interactions facilitate plastic bending. EPR imaging of a bent single crystal reveals the effect of deformation on the three-dimensional spin density of the crystal. The unusual mechanical compliance of this material opens prospects for exploration into flexible crystals of other stable organic radicals towards the development of flexible light-weight organic magnetoresistance devices based on weak, non-hydrogen-bonded interactions in molecular crystals., Mechanically soft crystals are interesting candidates for single crystal electronics. Here, crystals of a stable dithiadiazolyl radical are shown to be plastically bendable and display a change in their spin density in response to mechanical force.

The anticipated shift in the focal point of interest of solid-state chemists, crystal engineers, and crystallographers from structure to properties to function parallels the need to apply our accumulated understanding of the intricacies of crystal structure to explaining the related properties, with the ultimate goal of harnessing that knowledge in applications that require soft, lightweight, or biocompatible organic solids. In these developments, the adaptive molecular crystals warrant particular attention as an alternative choice of materials for light, flexible, and environmentally benign devices, primarily memories, capacitors, sensors, and actuators. Some of the outstanding requirements for the application of these dynamic materials as high-efficiency energy-storage devices are strongly induced polarization, a high switching field, and narrow hysteresis in the case of reversible dynamic processes. However, having been studied almost exclusively by chemists, molecular crystals still lack the appropriate investigations that reliably evaluate their reproducibility, scalability, and actuating performance, and some important drawbacks have diverted the interest of engineers from these materials in applications. United under the umbrella term crystal adaptronics, the recent research efforts aim to realistically assess the appositeness of dynamic crystals for applications that require fast, reversible, and continuous operation over prolonged periods of time. With the aim of highlighting the most recent developments, this Perspective discusses their assets and pitfalls. It also provides some hints on the likely future developments that capitalize on the untapped, sequestered potential of this distinct materials class for applications.

The melting of any pure crystalline material at constant pressure is one of its most fundamental properties, and it has been used to identify organic compounds or to verify their chemical or phase purity since the early times of chemistry. Here, we report that a mechanical deformation of plastic organic single crystals such as bending results in a small yet significant decrease in their melting point of about 0.3-0.4 K. The bent section of the crystal was found to be mechanically softer relative to the straight sections, and the softening temperature preceding the melting was also lower on the convex (outer) side of the bent crystal. Melting of the bent crystal starts at the kink and often appears as splitting of the respective endothermic peak in its thermal (DSC) fingerprint, while unilateral compression of the crystal results in multiple peaks. These thermomechanical effects become more pronounced with heavier mechanical damage due to an increased concentration of defects and ultimately result in a large temperature spread of the associated phase change in addition to melting-point depression in deformed or damaged crystals relative to their pristine counterparts. Within a broader context, the results show that mechanical treatment during sample preparation has a profound effect on the melting of a pure substance, and this could be critically important where the exact melting point is used as a means for polymorph identification.

The perception of organic crystals being rigid static entities is quickly eroding, and molecular crystals are now matching a number of properties previously thought to be unique to soft materials. Here, we present crystals of a boronate ester that encompass many of the elastic and plastic mechanical properties of polymers such as bending, twisting, coiling and highly efficient self-healing of up to 67%, while they maintain their long-range structural order. The approach utilizes the concept of dynamic covalent chemistry and proves it can be applied towards ordered materials. This work expands our current understanding of the properties of crystalline molecular materials, and it could have implications towards the development of mechanically robust organic crystals that are capable of self-repair for durable all-organic electronics and soft robotics., Organic crystal is described that can be bent plastically and twisted elastically, and can self-heal to 67%, an efficiency that is an order-of-magnitude higher compared to the only previously reported example.

The mention of the word "crystal" invokes images of minerals, gems, and rocks, all of which are inevitably solid, hard, and durable entities with well-defined smooth faces and straight edges. With the discovery in the first half of the 20th century that many molecular crystals are soft and can be deformed in a similar way as rubber or plastic, this perception is changing, and both the concept and formal definition of what a crystal is may require reinterpretation. The seemingly naïve question posed in the title of this Minireview does not have a simple answer. Here, we discuss how the effects of the elastic and plastic deformation of molecular crystals on the diffraction signature give primary evidence of their degree of crystallinity. In most cases, the definition of a crystal holds for both elastically and plastically deformed crystals and, unless there is significant or complete physical separation of the crystal during the deformation, they can safely be considered (deformed) single crystals with a high concentration of defects.

Being capable of rapid and complete structure switching, the martensitic phase transitions in molecular crystals are thought to hold a tremendous potential as thermally driven organic actuators., Being capable of rapid and complete structure switching, the martensitic phase transitions in molecular crystals are thought to hold a tremendous potential as thermally driven organic actuators. However, the mechanical engineering parlance in the assessment of their performance is not immediately legible to the chemistry research community that starts to explore these materials, and the unavailability of performance indices has precluded molecular crystals from being considered in the device design process. Here, we demonstrate that an organic martensite, hexamethylbenzene, can be used to perform work that is comparable to that of most actuator classes. Millimeter-size single crystals of this material undergo a transition between two forms by uniaxial expansion at a rate of 6.36(2) mm s–1, exerting force in the range 10–100 mN. The force-to-weight ratio of the crystals is on the order of 104 and is superior to that of some living creatures. An actuator performance chart reveals that the performance of this material is close to that of nanomuscles, electrostatic actuators and voice coils, with a strain higher than that of electro/magnetostrictive actuators and ceramic piezoelectrics and stress higher than that of the electroactive polymers, MEMS devices, nanomuscles, voice coils, and some solenoids. Moreover, the crystals of this material are mechanically compliant and can be reversibly bent and shaped to fit the desired application. Altogether, the results point to the untapped potential of molecular crystals as rapid and efficient soft, organic actuators.

Mechanochemical analogues have recently been established for several enzymatic reactions, but they require periodic interruption of the reaction for sampling, dissolution, and (bio)chemical analysis to monitor their progress. By applying a mechanochemical procedure to induce bioluminescence analogous to that used by the marine ostracod Cypridina (Vargula) hilgendorfii, here we demonstrate that the light emitted by a bioluminescent reaction can be used to directly monitor the progress of a mechanoenzymatic reaction without sampling. Mechanical treatment of Cypridina luciferase with luciferin generates bright blue light which can be readily detected and analyzed spectroscopically. This mechanically assisted bioluminescence proceeds through a mechanism identical to that of bioluminescence in solution, but has higher activation energy due to being diffusion-controlled in the viscous matrix. The results suggest that luciferases could be used as light-emissive reporters of mechanoenzymatic reactions.

A single crystal of the cis-dimer of nitrosobenzene was directly observed by photocrystallography to transition to a pair of monomers and reversibly redimerize. The remarkable displacement of the nitrogen atoms within the crystal—moving a total distance of 2.97(5) A for the two atoms—suggests that the breadth of solid-state photochemical reaction systems susceptible to X-ray diffraction studies need not be limited to those with very small atomic displacements.

A fluorescent hollow crystal of 9,10-dicyanoanthracene was filled with a perylene diimide derivative with complementary emissive features. The obtained crystal-in-crystal hybrid was used as a multiresponsive optical waveguide, which showed passive and active modes of light transduction and a bandwidth that extends from the visible to the infrared region.

Chemiluminescence, a process of transduction of energy stored within chemical bonds of ground-state reactants into light via high-energy excited intermediates, is known in solution, but has remained undetected in macroscopic crystalline solids. By detecting thermally induced chemiluminescence from centimeter-size crystals of an organic peroxide here we demonstrate direct transduction of heat into light by thermochemiluminescence of bulk crystals. Heating of crystals of lophine hydroperoxide to ~115 °C results in detectable emission of blue-green light with maximum at 530 nm with low chemiluminescent quantum yield [(2.1 ± 0.1) × 10‒7 E mol‒1]. Spectral comparison of the thermochemiluminescence in the solid state and in solution revealed that the solid-state thermochemiluminescence of lophine peroxide is due to emission from deprotonated lophine. With selected 1,2-dioxetane, endoperoxide and aroyl peroxide we also establish that the thermochemiluminescence is common for crystalline peroxides, with the color of the emitted light varying from blue to green to red., Chemiluminescence is known in solution, but has remained undetected in macroscopic crystalline solids so far. This chapter discusses the relationships between rural population replacement and rural enterprise development. It presents a context by summarizing population census data to show that out-migration in the indigenous population masks a secondary but dynamic process of population replacement through in-migration. The chapter also presents returns from a survey of small and medium enterprises (SME) in the three counties, and illustrates the significance of in-comers in the formation of new rural-based businesses. These three countries are: Mayo, Galway and Clare. The chapter is concerned with the relationships between the formation and development of SMEs as a state-sponsored rural development strategy and the way in which rural restructuring on this basis is related to demographic processes. It describes the survey analysis in assessing the impact of the new businesses on local economic and demographic structures. The chapter summarizes the global-local relationships emerging from the analysis.

The artist Sir Anthony van Dyck spent his life illustrating the English royalty in the early to mid-17th century, and during his career he became famous for his relaxed elegance and use of a particular hue of brown. The brown pigment would eventually be named after him, ‘van Dyck brown’, and can still be found today. However, another pigment became commercially available much later after his death, and it is commercially available as ‘van Dyck crystals’. In practice the two terms are used interchangeably, as they both are made from organic material. Here we investigate the complex chemical composition of ‘van Dyck crystals’, and we show that the two pigments are distinctly different, both in composition and in origin. We show that the colored component of the ‘van Dyck crystals’ is not crystalline and should not be confused with the original pigment.

One of the most inevitable limitations of any material that is exposed to mechanical impact is that they are inexorably prone to mechanical damage, such as cracking, denting, gouging, or wearing. To confront this challenge, the field of polymers has developed materials that are capable of autonomous self-healing and recover their macroscopic integrity similar to biological organisms. However, the study of this phenomenon has mostly remained within the soft materials community and has not been explored by solid-state organic chemists. The first evidence of self-healing in a molecular crystal is now presented using crystals of dipyrazolethiuram disulfide. The crystals were mildly compressed and the degree of healing was found to be 6.7 %. These findings show that the self-healing properties can be extended beyond mesophasic materials and applied towards the realm of ordered solid-state compounds.

When exposed to external stimuli such as heat or light, certain single crystals can acquire momentum and undergo motion. On a molecular scale, the motility of such dynamic single crystals is triggered by a phase transition or chemical reaction without gaseous products, and macroscopically manifests as either slow (reversible or irreversible) deformation, or as rapid, almost instantaneous propulsion of the crystals that is oftentimes accompanied by disintegration. While the elastic energy of the slow reconfiguration processes such as bending, twisting and coiling can be utilized for actuation of other objects, the fast disintegrative processes could be exploited to initiate pressure-sensitive applications. This short review intends to summarize recent developments in the growing research on dynamic crystals, especially aspects of the mechanism of rapid motion of thermosalient and photosalient (leaping) crystals. The collective evidence indicates that these solids are organic-based analogues of the inorganic martensitic materials. While qualitative explanation of the molecular processes that lead to the related dynamic phenomena can be provided, quantification of their kinematics, estimation of the useful work that can be extracted, and prediction of their occurrence are yet to be established. Harnessing the potential of these materials to rapidly and efficiently perform the fundamentally important process of transduction of heat or light into kinetic energy appears as a prospective basis for their application in motion gears and devices.

Synthesis and isolation of selectively brominated tetraarylporphyrin derivatives is reported. Treatment with bromine of meso-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin (1) or meso-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,5-di-[Formula: see text]-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)porphinatocopper(II) (2-Cu) yields products octabrominated at the 2,6-positions of meso-aryl substituents [5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dibromo-3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin, [Formula: see text]Br81] or macrocyclic [Formula: see text]-positions. The latter of these ([Formula: see text]-brominated) was identified as the oxoporphyrinogen 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20- tetrakis(3,5-di-[Formula: see text]-butyl-4-oxo-cyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene)porphyrinogen 3 obtained due to the adventitious oxidation and demetalation of 2-Cu, which could be alkylated at its macrocyclic nitrogen atoms yielding N[Formula: see text],N[Formula: see text],N[Formula: see text],N[Formula: see text]-tetrakis(4-bromobenzyl)-2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,5-di-[Formula: see text]-butyl-4-oxo-cyclo hexa-2,5-dienylidene)porphyrinogen 4. The former compound [Formula: see text]Br81 was complexed with Zn(II) ([Formula: see text]Br81-Zn) or Cu(II) ([Formula: see text]Br81-Cu) and could also be subjected to further bromination yielding 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15,20-tetrakis(2,6-dibromo-3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl)porphyrin, Br[Formula: see text]1. The effect on the electrochemical properties of the 2,6-bromophenyl-substituted porphyrin compounds over the more highly brominated products was assessed.

Actin plays fundamental roles in both the cytoplasm and the cell nucleus. In the nucleus, β‐actin regulates neuronal reprogramming by consolidating a heterochromatin landscape required for transcription of neuronal gene programs, yet it remains unknown whether it has a role in other differentiation models. To explore the potential roles of β‐actin in osteogenesis, β‐actin wild‐type (WT) and β‐actin knockout (KO) mouse embryonic fibroblasts (MEFs) are reprogrammed to osteoblast‐like cells using small molecules in vitro. It is discovered that loss of β‐actin leads to an accelerated mineralization phenotype (hypermineralization), accompanied with enhanced formation of extracellular hydroxyapatite microcrystals, which originate in the mitochondria in the form of microgranules. This phenotype is a consequence of rapid upregulation of mitochondrial genes including those involved in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) in reprogrammed KO cells. It is further found that osteogenic gene programs are differentially regulated between WT and KO cells, with clusters of genes exhibiting different temporal expression patterns. A novel function for β‐actin in osteogenic reprogramming through a mitochondria‐based mechanism that controls cell‐mediated mineralization is proposed., The present study highlights a new function for β‐actin in transcriptional reprograming during osteogenic differentiation, leading to cell‐mediated mineralization. β‐actin performs this task by regulating expression of osteogenic factors and mitochondrial genes during osteogenesis. These observations support the novel involvement of cytoskeletal proteins such as actin in gene expression regulation during development and differentiation.

The photochemical conversion of 1,8a-dihydroazulene-1,1-dicarbonitrile (DHA) to vinylheptafulvene (VHF) is a positive T-type photoswitch that is well understood in solution, but has not been explored in the solid state. Upon excitation with UV light, DHA is converted into VHF in the solid state, with a distinct color change from yellow to deep-red, and retention of crystallinity. The structure of the ring-opened product was assigned to syn-VHF using variable-temperature infrared spectroscopy, and determined by X-ray photodiffraction in a crystal enriched with the product by two-photon excitation. A radical pathway becomes an observable photoreaction channel at low temperatures, and includes a strongly colored, short-lived diradical intermediate.

Ischemic heart disease often leads to myocardial infarction and remains the most common cause for death in humans. Although the exact impetus for the infarction remains elusive, a mechanism has been proposed that relates the disease to the observed high cholesterol levels in the body. The mechanism claims that cholesterol crystallizes inside the arterial plaque into needle-shaped crystals. The crystals puncture the fibrous cap of the plaque, whereby the necrotic contents of the plaque are spilled, subsequently clotting the blood vessels. This hypothesis has not been given sufficient attention partly due to the purported softness of the organic crystals and the common platy habit of the known crystal forms of cholesterol. In this work it is shown that, from hydrophobic solutions that attempt to emulate the plaque contents, a new solid form of cholesterol crystallizes as prisms with mucronate tips, and they are sufficiently strong to puncture a lamb pericardium, which mimics the plaque cap. The properties of the crystals were assessed by mechanical, structural, and crystallographic analyses. The results support the hypothesis that the cholesterol crystals can be considered, at least within the framework of the proposed mechanism, a possible cause of myocardial infarction.

The synthesis, crystal packing and photochemical reactions of α-santonin (1a) and its methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, and n-butyl derivatives (1b–e) are described to explore the effect that a photochemically benign yet structurally significant synthetic modification can have on the solid-state photochemical reactivity. The structures of the derivatives were determined using single crystal X-ray diffraction and compared against the packing of α-santonin. A cage dimer (12a) found exclusively upon irradiation of 1a in the solid state was not found when the other derivatives were exposed to light, because the alkylation proved to perturb the crystal packing away from an optimal dimerization alignment. Using a high-speed camera, we monitored the photosalient effect of α-santonin and found it to occur at an angle orthogonal to the b-axis of the unit cell, which we suspect is caused by the formation of the cage dimer 12. The concept of biomineralization and encapsulation of organic molecules into inorganic matrices to alter and enhance their physical properties has been evolved and perfected in natural systems. Being inspired by the natural biomineralization of foreign components into calcite, here the inclusion of a plant virus, cowpea mosaic virus (CPMV) of 5.4% by mass into crystals of calcite is reported. The viral particles are labeled with a fluorescent tag (Alexa Fluor 532), and are observed within the calcite matrix using confocal fluorescence microscopy. Upon encapsulation, the calcite crystals exhibit an irregular and aggregated morphology, as visualized with atomic force and electron microscopy. The viral particles protected inside the calcite crystals are able to resist harsh chemical agents. While spherical viral particles such as CPMV can be easily included in calcite, viruses such as the tobacco mosaic virus are not compatible with the host, presumably due to their high aspect ratio. The results provide a simple and scalable method to incorporate viral particles into inorganic matrix, and could prove useful in thermal stabilization of sensitive viral biological agents such as vaccines in the future.

Against a background of limited research on rural poverty and social exclusion in Europe, this article draws mainly, but not exclusively, on Irish studies to discuss three related themes. The first identifies distinctive characteristics of poverty in rural areas on the basis that specifically rural features restrict the applicability of rural – urban comparisons. The second elaborates on this point in reviewing the problems of finding appropriate indicators of poverty and deprivation in farm households and in rural areas. The third theme moves the discussion from poverty and deprivation as outcomes or static states to social exclusion as a set of dynamic processes which generate and reproduce rural poverty. A number of generic exclusionary processes are posited and their specific rural manifestations illustrated. The review of Irish experience suggests that studies of rural poverty and social exclusion require sensitivity to the specifics of rurality, a theoretical understanding of multidimensionality in processes and outcomes, and an eclectic set of research approaches.

We describe the synthesis, characterization, photochemical isomerization, and rotational dynamics of a crystalline molecular gyroscope containing an azobenzene bridge (trans-2) that spans from one end of the stator to other, with the intention of exploring its function as a molecular brake. While single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of a photochemically inactive dichloromethane solvate was used to confirm the molecular and packing structures of trans-2, a nanocrystalline pseudopolymorph was shown to be photoactive, and it was analyzed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy, and variable temperature solid state (2)H NMR before and after photoisomerization. It was shown that the nanocrystalline suspension irradiated with λ = 340 nm reaches a photostationary state with 34% of cis-isomer, as compared to that observed in solution where the corresponding value is 74%. Line shape analysis of solid state (2)H NMR spectra of a phenylene-d4 isotopologue, obtained as a function of temperature, indicated that rotation in crystals of the trans-2 isomer, with a mean activation energy of 4.6 ± 0.6 kcal/mol and a pre-exponential factor exp(29.4 ± 1.7), is ten times faster than that of samples containing the cis-2 isomer, which has a higher mean activation energy of 5.1 ± 0.6 kcal/mol and a lower pre-exponential factor of exp(27.9 ± 1.3).

The indigenous agri‐food sector in the Republic of Ireland has evolved to a stage where Irish companies are firmly implicated in a competitive European and global marketplace. Considerable restructuring of the sector has taken place, the central features of which are identified. One of the consequences has been a shift in the location of food industry employment to the more rural areas. Food chains and related state actions are described under three main product categories: agri‐industrial, organic and speciality foods. Small‐scale rural enterprises in the latter two categories form the main focus of the paper. Qualitative data from a study of these enterprises are used to discuss their recent growth and their production and marketing patterns, as well as their significance for rural development. They face particular problems in selling their products in a limited domestic market and in a context where more powerful interests are striving for greater efficiencies in food supply chains. Within a comparatively short time there has emerged in Ireland an ad hoc ensemble of initiatives, funds and organisations pursuing aspects of rural development. As a result development policy is faced with a series of institutional and organisational questions (NESC, 1994: 115). These questions concern central-local relationships, possible overlap between agencies, the appropriate spatial units for different programmes, the choice between territorially-based organisations versus sectoral agencies, and accountability in regard to the use of public funds. This paper presents some results from a prospective model designed to facilitate analysis of the policy and institutional environment pertaining to rural development in Ireland. It identifies weaknesses in the institutional fabric: the high degree of centralisation of power and responsibility within agencies; related to this, the sharp compartmentalisation among agencies which act independently of each other, in singularly focusing on separately defined areas of administration; the proliferation of agencies and programmes, this partly reflects the influence of EU funded programmes which have promoted ?bottom up? approaches; the lack of an adequate sub-national spatial focus in policy implementation, and a ?democratic deficit? to the extent that emerging new partnerships are not inclusive of local representative democratic structures. Policy instruments are evaluated and issues for future policy emphasis explored. The paper concludes that organisational structures are vitally important to successful policy intervention in lagging regions. Within the Irish system institutional change is urgently needed.

This article examines possible future developments with particular references to the role of new technology and the implications for Europe's agricultural producers. The main proposition is that the maintenance of commercial viability will oblige producers to adopt innovations and new practices, but the most successful will be farmers with the greater economic resources and superior managerial abilities. The outcome will be increasing socio-economic differentiation within the EEC population of agricultural producers and an increasing proportion of farm output coming from the top 20 per cent of farmers in the Community.
