Abstract Background Systematic reviews (SRs) are time-consuming and labor-intensive to perform. With the growing number of scientific publications, the SR development process becomes even more laborious. This is problematic because timely SR evidence is essential for decision-making in evidence-based healthcare and policymaking. Numerous methods and tools that accelerate SR development have recently emerged. To date, no scoping review has been conducted to provide a comprehensive summary of methods and ready-to-use tools to improve efficiency in SR production. Objective To present an overview of primary studies that evaluated the use of ready-to-use applications of tools or review methods to improve efficiency in the review process. Methods We conducted a scoping review. An information specialist performed a systematic literature search in four databases, supplemented with citation-based and grey literature searching. We included studies reporting the performance of methods and ready-to-use tools for improving efficiency when producing or updating a SR in the health field. We performed dual, independent title and abstract screening, full-text selection, and data extraction. The results were analyzed descriptively and presented narratively. Results We included 103 studies: 51 studies reported on methods, 54 studies on tools, and 2 studies reported on both methods and tools to make SR production more efficient. A total of 72 studies evaluated the validity (n = 69) or usability (n = 3) of one method (n = 33) or tool (n = 39), and 31 studies performed comparative analyses of different methods (n = 15) or tools (n = 16). 20 studies conducted prospective evaluations in real-time workflows. Most studies evaluated methods or tools that aimed at screening titles and abstracts (n = 42) and literature searching (n = 24), while for other steps of the SR process, only a few studies were found. Regarding the outcomes included, most studies reported on validity outcomes (n = 84), while outcomes such as impact on results (n = 23), time-saving (n = 24), usability (n = 13), and cost-saving (n = 3) were less often evaluated. Conclusion For title and abstract screening and literature searching, various evaluated methods and tools are available that aim at improving the efficiency of SR production. However, only few studies have addressed the influence of these methods and tools in real-world workflows. Few studies exist that evaluate methods or tools supporting the remaining tasks. Additionally, while validity outcomes are frequently reported, there is a lack of evaluation regarding other outcomes.

This editorial is in response to the three latest clinical consensus guidelines authored by the Critical Care Committee of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. Herein, we discuss their main findings and recommendations and their impact on the practice of Surgical Critical Care.

Purpose: Clean and efficient alternatives for sustainable treatment of pig farming wastes are a priority in suburban areas in Forest Reserves of High Andean ecosystems. Among these technologies are Bokashi Fermentation and composting with added microorganisms (bioaugmentation) or nutrients (biostimulation) as biological activators. Method: In a Colombian rural area located at 3160 m.a.s.l., focused on small-scale swine production, Bokashi fermentation with active dry yeast and in-vessel composting were evaluated using two microbial inoculants and a sterile metabolic stimulant. In addition, these treatments were compared with a non-inoculated composting process used in the study area (control). Results: The biological additives improved the composting process performance and end- product quality by shortening the degradation cycle (19.9-45.9%), higher germination index (>0.8%), increasing nutrient content (N, P, S, Fe and Cu) and showing suppressive activity against Fusarium oxysporum compared to control. Nevertheless, Bokashi was the only treatment that decreased Enterobacteriaceae concentration below 1E+03 CFU g-1. Conclusion: Bokashi technology complies with Colombia’s environmental regulations for eco-friendly fertilizer production, which allows the sustainable management by-products from swine activities in critical ecological areas such as Forestry Protection Reserves in High Andean ecosystems. Abstract Background Chikungunya is associated with high morbidity and the natural history of symptomatic infection has been divided into three phases (acute, post-acute, and chronic) according to the duration of musculoskeletal symptoms. Although this classification has been designed to help guide therapeutic decisions, it does not encompass the complexity of the clinical expression of the disease and does not assist in the evaluation of the prognosis of severity nor chronic disease. Thus, the current challenge is to identify and diagnose musculoskeletal disorders and to provide the optimal treatment in order to prevent perpetuation or progression to a potentially destructive disease course. Methods The study is the first product of the Clinical and Applied Research Network in Chikungunya (REPLICK). This is a prospective, outpatient department-based, multicenter cohort study in Brazil. Four work packages were defined: i. Clinical research; ii) Translational Science – comprising immunology and virology streams; iii) Epidemiology and Economics; iv) Therapeutic Response and clinical trials design. Scheduled appointments on days 21 (D21) ± 7 after enrollment, D90 ± 15, D120 ± 30, D180 ± 30; D360 ± 30; D720 ± 60, and D1080 ± 60 days. On these visits a panel of blood tests are collected in addition to the clinical report forms to obtain data on socio-demographic, medical history, physical examination and questionnaires devoted to the evaluation of musculoskeletal manifestations and overall health are performed. Participants are asked to consent for their specimens to be maintained in a biobank. Aliquots of blood, serum, saliva, PAXgene, and when clinically indicated to be examined, synovial fluid, are stored at -80° C. The study protocol was submitted and approved to the National IRB and local IRB at each study site. Discussion Standardized and harmonized patient cohorts are needed to provide better estimates of chronic arthralgia development, the clinical spectra of acute and chronic disease and investigation of associated risk factors. This study is the largest evaluation of the long-term sequelae of individuals infected with CHIKV in the Brazilian population focusing on musculoskeletal manifestations, mental health, quality of life, and chronic pain. This information will both define disease burden and costs associated with CHIKV infection, and better inform therapeutic guidelines.

OBJECTIVES:. Inhaled volatile anesthetics support management of status asthmaticus (SA), status epilepticus (SE), and difficult sedation (DS). This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and feasibility of using inhaled anesthetics for SA, SE, and DS in adult ICU and PICU patients. DATA SOURCES:. MEDLINE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Embase. STUDY SELECTION:. Primary literature search that reported the use of inhaled anesthetics in ventilated patients with SA, SE, and DS from 1970 to 2021. DATA EXTRACTION:. Study data points were extracted by two authors independently. Quality assessment was performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute appraisal tool for case studies/series, Newcastle criteria for cohort/case–control studies, and risk-of-bias framework for clinical trials. DATA SYNTHESIS:. Primary outcome was volatile efficacy in improving predefined clinical or physiologic endpoints. Secondary outcomes were adverse events and delivery logistics. From 4281 screened studies, the number of included studies/patients across diagnoses and patient groups were: SA (adult: 38/121, pediatric: 28/142), SE (adult: 18/37, pediatric: 5/10), and DS (adult: 21/355, pediatric: 10/90). Quality of evidence was low, consisting mainly of case reports and series. Clinical and physiologic improvement was seen within 1–2 hours of initiating volatiles, with variable efficacy across diagnoses and patient groups: SA (adult: 89–95%, pediatric: 80–97%), SE (adults: 54–100%, pediatric: 60–100%), and DS (adults: 60–90%, pediatric: 62–90%). Most common adverse events were cardiovascular, that is, hypotension and arrhythmias. Inhaled sedatives were commonly delivered using anesthesia machines for SA/SE and miniature vaporizers for DS. Few (10%) of studies reported required non-ICU personnel, and only 16% had ICU volatile delivery protocol. CONCLUSIONS:. Volatile anesthetics may provide effective treatment in patients with SA, SE, and DS scenarios but the quality of evidence is low. Higher-quality powered prospective studies of the efficacy and safety of using volatile anesthetics to manage SA, SE, and DS patients are required. Education regarding inhaled anesthetics and the protocolization of their use is needed.

This study investigated the effect of nicotinamide (NAM) supplementation on the development of brain inflammation and microglial activation in a mouse model of type 1 diabetes mellitus. C57BL/6J male mice, which were made diabetic with five consecutive, low-dose (55 mg/kg i.p.) streptozotocin (STZ) injections. Diabetic mice were randomly distributed in different experimental groups and challenged to different doses of NAM (untreated, NAM low-dose, LD, 0.1%; NAM high-dose, HD, 0.25%) for 25 days. A control, non-diabetic group of mice was used as a reference. The NAD+ content was increased in the brains of NAM-treated mice compared with untreated diabetic mice (NAM LD: 3-fold; NAM HD: 3-fold, p-value < 0.05). Immunohistochemical staining revealed that markers of inflammation (TNFα: NAM LD: −35%; NAM HD: −46%; p-value < 0.05) and microglial activation (IBA-1: NAM LD: −29%; NAM HD: −50%; p-value < 0.05; BDKRB1: NAM LD: −36%; NAM HD: −37%; p-value < 0.05) in brains from NAM-treated diabetic mice were significantly decreased compared with non-treated T1D mice. This finding was accompanied by a concomitant alleviation of nuclear NFκB (p65) signaling in treated diabetic mice (NFκB (p65): NAM LD: −38%; NAM HD: −53%, p-value < 0.05). Notably, the acetylated form of the nuclear NFκB (p65) was significantly decreased in the brains of NAM-treated, diabetic mice (NAM LD: −48%; NAM HD: −63%, p-value < 0.05) and inversely correlated with NAD+ content (r = −0.50, p-value = 0.03), suggesting increased activity of NAD+-dependent deacetylases in the brains of treated mice. Thus, dietary NAM supplementation in diabetic T1D mice prevented brain inflammation via NAD+-dependent deacetylation mechanisms, suggesting an increased action of sirtuin signaling.

The oxidized form of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a critical metabolite for living cells. NAD+ may act either as a cofactor for many cellular reactions as well as a coenzyme for different NAD+-consuming enzymes involved in the physiological homeostasis of different organs and systems. In mammals, NAD+ is synthesized from either tryptophan or other vitamin B3 intermediates that act as NAD+ precursors. Recent research suggests that NAD+ precursors play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the gut barrier. Indeed, its deficiency has been associated with enhanced gut inflammation and leakage, and dysbiosis. Conversely, NAD+-increasing therapies may confer protection against intestinal inflammation in experimental conditions and human patients, with accumulating evidence indicating that such favorable effects could be, at least in part, mediated by concomitant changes in the composition of intestinal microbiota. However, the mechanisms by which NAD+-based treatments affect the microbiota are still poorly understood. In this context, we have focused specifically on the impact of NAD+ deficiency on intestinal inflammation and dysbiosis in animal and human models. We have further explored the relationship between NAD+ and improved host intestinal metabolism and immunity and the composition of microbiota in vivo. Overall, this comprehensive review aims to provide a new perspective on the effect of NAD+-increasing strategies on host intestinal physiology.

Introduction: Healthcare workers (HCW) report higher levels of anxiety, depression, burnout, compared to the general population. The severe global health crisis caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 brought even more burden to HCW. Objective: To assessed burnout as a whole and in its different domains among HCW in a medical center Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study examining the association between demographic characteristics, healthcare position and feeling burned out. Data was collected through an anonymous online survey. We utilized the Maslach Survey for Medical Personnel in Spanish. Descriptive analyses summarized age, gender, job role, number of jobs, time in the organization and working in a COVID-19 exposed area. Ji2 tests were used to analyze association between variables and burnout. A multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify independent predictors of any of the burnout domains: emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP) and/or personal accomplishment (PA). Results: 185/852 subjects answered the survey (21.7%); 79 subjects reported EE (42.7%), 61 (32.9%) DP and 31 (16.7%) PA; 98 (52.4%) had at least one component of high burnout for the dimensions analyzed. Logistics regression shows that female gender (OR= 2.21; 95% CI: 1.12-4.39), administrative positions (OR= 18.61; 95% CI: 4.28-80.93), physicians (OR= 13.27; 95% CI 3.55-49.86), and nurses (OR= 6.55; 95% CI: 1.58-27.14) were strongly associated with the presence of any burnout domain. Conclusions: The overall burnout prevalence was in range with international studies. Female workers, administrative positions, physicians and nurses were identified as independent predictors of burnout.

Genetic information provides insights into the exome, genome, epigenetics and structural organisation of the organism. Given the enormous amount of genetic information, scientists are able to perform mammoth tasks to improve the standard of health care such as determining genetic influences on outcome of allogeneic transplantation. Cloud based computing has increasingly become a key choice for many scientists, engineers and institutions as it offers on-demand network access and users can conveniently rent rather than buy all required computing resources. With the positive advancements of cloud computing and nanopore sequencing data output, we were motivated to develop an automated and scalable analysis pipeline utilizing cloud infrastructure in Microsoft Azure to accelerate HLA genotyping service and improve the efficiency of the workflow at lower cost. In this study, we describe (i) the selection process for suitable virtual machine sizes for computing resources to balance between the best performance versus cost effectiveness; (ii) the building of Docker containers to include all tools in the cloud computational environment; (iii) the comparison of HLA genotype concordance between the in-house manual method and the automated cloud-based pipeline to assess data accuracy. In conclusion, the Microsoft Azure cloud based data analysis pipeline was shown to meet all the key imperatives for performance, cost, usability, simplicity and accuracy. Importantly, the pipeline allows for the on-going maintenance and testing of version changes before implementation. This pipeline is suitable for the data analysis from MinION sequencing platform and could be adopted for other data analysis application processes.

Background Dysregulation of glycogene expression in cancer can lead to aberrant glycan expression, which can promote tumorigenesis. Cervical cancer (CC) displays an increased expression of glycogenes involved in sialylation and sialylated glycans. Here, we show a comprehensive analysis of glycogene expression in CC to identify glycogene expression signatures and the possible glycosylation pathways altered. Methods First, we performed a microarray expression assay to compare glycogene expression changes between normal and cervical cancer tissues. Second, we used 401 glycogenes to analyze glycogene expression in adenocarcinoma and squamous carcinoma from RNA-seq data at the cBioPortal for Cancer Genomics. Results The analysis of the microarray expression assay indicated that CC displayed an increase in glycogenes related to GPI-anchored biosynthesis and a decrease in genes associated with chondroitin and dermatan sulfate with respect to normal tissue. Also, the glycogene analysis of CC samples by the RNA-seq showed that the glycogenes involved in the chondroitin and dermatan sulfate pathway were downregulated. Interestingly the adenocarcinoma tumors displayed a unique glycogene expression signature compared to squamous cancer that shows heterogeneous glycogene expression divided into six types. Squamous carcinoma type 5 (SCC-5) showed increased expression of genes implicated in keratan and heparan sulfate synthesis, glycosaminoglycan degradation, ganglio, and globo glycosphingolipid synthesis was related to poorly differentiated tumors and poor survival. Squamous carcinoma type 6 (SCC-6) displayed an increased expression of genes involved in chondroitin/dermatan sulfate synthesis and lacto and neolacto glycosphingolipid synthesis and was associated with nonkeratinizing squamous cancer and good survival. In summary, our study showed that CC tumors are not a uniform entity, and their glycome signatures could be related to different clinicopathological characteristics.

ObjectivesThis study aimed to explore the acceptability, feasibility, usability, and preliminary effect of an electronic patient-reported outcome (ePRO) intervention for patients with breast cancer in Mexico.DesignWe conducted a multimethod non-randomised pilot study. We used a pre-test/post-test design for quantitative assessment of the intervention's effect on patients' supportive care needs and quality of life. We conducted in-depth interviews (IDIs) with participants and healthcare workers to explore the intervention's benefits and barriers and understand its feasibility.Participants50 women aged 20-75 diagnosed with stage I-III breast cancer were enrolled within 2 weeks of starting neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. We excluded illiterate women and those with visual impairment, cognitive disability or severe depression. IDIs were conducted with 18 participants and 10 healthcare providers.SettingOncology services in three public hospitals of the Mexican Social Security Institute.InterventionThe ePRO intervention consisted of a responsive web application for weekly symptom reporting combined with proactive follow-up by nurses guided by predefined clinical algorithms for 6 weeks.Results50 women were enrolled out of 66 eligible patients approached (75.8%). All 50 completed the 4-week follow-up assessment (100% retention). Completion of the symptom registry declined from 100% in week 1 to 66% in week 6. Participants experienced decreases in supportive care needs and increased quality of life. The ePRO application was rated highly usable. Participants and health professionals both perceived intervention benefits. Drawbacks included poor fit for women receiving radiotherapy and challenges using the application for women with low digital literacy or experiencing severe symptoms.ConclusionsThis pilot study provided evidence of the high usability and potential efficacy of a web-based ePRO intervention. We revised recruitment during the pilot to include multiple facilities, and we will further revise for the randomised trial to address barriers to successful ePRO implementation.Trial registration numberClinicalTrials.gov ID: NCT05925257.

Abstract Background Lack of control of hypertension is one of the most prevalent problems encountered by general practitioners (GPs). Self-measured blood pressure monitoring at home (SMBP) and self-titration of medication could be a good strategy to improve hypertension management, however, evidence is limited and not conclusive. We aimed to assess the effectiveness, in the primary care setting, of an intervention that includes educational components, SMBP and self-titration of antihypertensive medication to decrease systolic blood pressure compared to usual care, in a population with poorly controlled hypertension, during a 12-month period. Methods Pragmatic, controlled, randomized, unblinded clinical trial with two parallel groups assigned in a ratio of 1:1 to self-management (which includes educational components, SBMP and self-titration of antihypertensive medication based on a patient’s GP’s pre-established adjustment plan) or to usual care (with educational components too). Discussion If the data from this trial show positive results, the study may contribute to a change of strategy in the treatment of hypertension, focusing on the patient as the main actor to achieve blood pressure control. Furthermore, this approach might contribute to the financial sustainability of the National Health Service. The study region is seismically and tectonically characterized by the angle variations in the subduction of the Nazca plate. The results obtained from earthquakes location between 32° and 36°S latitude and 67°–71°W longitude are presented in this work. The presence of a wedge of asthenospheric materials and the partial or total eclogitization of the subducted Nazca plate and its relation with isostatic cortex models published was analyzed. In addition, a gravimetric profile obtained from gravity forward modeling is presented at 33.5°S, proposing a new configuration at depths for the main tectonic components: Nazca plate, asthenospheric wedge and South American plate. Also, a new density scheme using recently published velocity models was obtained.

Abstract Background Hope and resilience protect against inner vulnerabilities or harsh life circumstances; they explain individual differences in physical or mental health outcomes under high stress. They have been studied in complementary or competing theoretical frameworks; therefore, the study of measures of hope and resilience should be undertaken prior to explore if they are truly value-added for research. This study investigates the convergent and incremental validity of the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) and the Herth Hope Scale (HHS), in the prediction of anxiety and depression (HSCL-25). Methods Participants in this community-based sample are 762 adults from 18 to 74 years old. They answered the RSA, HHS, Spanish Language Stressful Life-Events Checklist (SL-SLE), and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25). Incremental validity analyses combined hierarchical regression and structural equation models (SEM). First, hierarchical regression models were compared based on three criteria (R 2 Diff., ΔF, and semi-partial r), then the direct effect of resilience on affective symptoms was compared with the mediated effect of resilience on affective symptoms through hope. Results The hierarchical models showed that (1) hope and resilience account significantly for the variance of affective symptoms above age, sex, and life-stress; (2) Resilience Total score has greater incremental validity than positive scales of HHS Hope; and (3) RSA Total score, HHS Optimism/Spiritual support, Stressful life-events and sex are unique predictors of affective symptoms. The SEM analyses verified a stronger direct effect of resilience in the prediction of affective symptoms above the significant partial mediated effect of resilience through hope. Additionally, results show that age and better educational opportunities were associated with protection (i.e. resilience and hope) and emotional well-being (i.e. affective symptoms and hopelessness). Women showed higher scores in social competences and resources (RSA), interconnectedness and initiative to take action (HHS). However, they have poorer evaluations of own abilities and efficacy (RSA), and higher scores in all the affective symptoms assessed. Conclusion The RSA has incremental validity above the HHS, however, both the RSA and the HHS are effective, differentiated and complementary measures of protection that are of high relevance for research on psychosocial and emotional well-being.

Despite recent advances in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis, the current therapeutic approach to these critically ill patients is centered around supportive care including fluid resuscitation, vasopressors and source control. The incidence of SIRS and sepsis continues to increase in the United States and patients die due to failure to respond to the traditional therapies of nitric oxide blockade, adrenergic agonists, etc. Bacterial and mitochondrial N-formyl peptides (NFPs) act as damage-associated molecular patterns and activate the innate immune system through formyl peptide receptors (FPR) located in immune and non-immune cells, including the vascular endothelium. The resulting inflammatory response manifests as capillary leak, tissue hypoperfusion and vasoplegia, partially due to endothelium barrier breakdown. Potential strategies to prevent this response include decreasing NFP release, breakdown of NFPs, and blocking NFPs from binding FPR. We propose the use of deformylase, the degrading enzyme for NFPs, as potential therapeutic approach to prevent the deleterious effects of NFPs in SIRS and sepsis.

Resilience is a multi-dimensional construct associated with health and well-being. At present, we do not yet have a valid, scientific instrument that is designed to evaluate adult resilience in Spanish-speaking countries and that accounts for family, social and individual components. This study aimed at investigating the construct and cross-cultural validity of the Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA) by combining Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and Hierarchical Regression models in a Hispanic Latin-American group. A community sample of 805 adults answered the RSA, Spanish Language Stressful Life-Events checklist (SL-SLE), and the Hopkins Symptom Checklist-25 (HSCL-25). First-order CFA verified the six factors structure for the RSA (RMSEA = .037, SRMR = .047, CFI = .91, TLI = .90). Five RSA scales and total score have good internal consistency (scales α > .70; total score α = .90). Two second-order CFA verified the intrapersonal and interpersonal dimensions of the protector factors of resilience, as well as their commonality and uniqueness with affective symptoms (anxiety and depression). An exploratory MDS reproduced the relations of RSA items and factors at first and second-order levels against random simulated data, thereby providing initial evidence of its cross-cultural validity in a Spanish-speaking group. The Four-steps hierarchical model showed that the RSA scales are the strongest predictors of anxiety and depression-greater than gender, age, education and stressful life-events. Three RSA scales are significant unique predictors of affective symptoms. In addition, similar to findings in diverse cultural settings, resilience is positively associated with age but not with education. Women report higher scores of Social Resources and Social Competence and lower scores of Perception of the Self. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the construct and criterion-related validity of the RSA in broad, diverse and Spanish speaking sample.

Several studies show that portions of intramyocardial coronary arteries are spared of arteriosclerosis, involving morphological, embryological, biochemical and pathophysiological aspects. Endothelial function is significantly affected in the segment of transition, as estimated by the vasoactive response to Ach. These findings suggest that myocardial bridge can provide protection against arteriosclerosis by counteracting the negative effects of endothelial dysfunction. The intramyocardial portion's protection phenomenon deserves further scientific research on all research fronts. Improved morphological, biomechanical and especially physiological and embryological knowledge may be the key to a future window of opportunity for chronic arterial disease therapy and prevention. A função endotelial é significativamente afetada no segmento de transição, tal como estimado pela resposta vasoativa para acetilcolina (Ach). Esses achados sugerem que ponte miocárdica pode fornecer proteção contra a arteriosclerose, por contrariar os efeitos negativos da disfunção endotelial. O fenômeno dessa proteção da porção intramiocárdica merece maior investigação científica em todas as frentes de pesquisa. Maiores conhecimentos sobre os aspectos morfológicos, biomecânicos e, principalmente, fisiológicos e embriológicos podem ser a chave para uma futura janela de oportunidades de terapia e prevenção da doença arterial crônica. Nessa revisão, discutem-se, também, possíveis abordagens terapêuticas para fenômenos coronarianos isquêmicos causados por pontes miocárdicas

El modelo femenino ofrecido por la factoría Disney está cambiando. Sus princesas han vivido un proce­so de empoderamiento acorde con los cambios sociales experimentados por las mujeres en los últimos años. De una tríada sumisa y adscrita al ámbito privado –Blancanieves, Cenicienta y Aurora– se pasa a unos personajes femeninos incorporados al espacio público, independientes y decididas –Rapunzel, Mé­rida, Anna y Elsa–. Son justamente las transformaciones en el papel femenino protagonizado por estas últimas jóvenes las que justifican este artículo. Pero, ¿cómo ha sido la evolución? ¿Qué variaciones ha habido en sus actitudes y apariencias? ¿En qué se fundamenta su adquisición de poder? Las respuestas se buscan a través de un análisis de contenido cualitativo de las doce películas sobre princesas con base en varias categorías: aspecto físico; personalidad; roles; y relaciones con el entorno. Todo ello bajo el pa­raguas del feminismo crítico, que se esfuerza en erradicar conductas sexistas y un androcentrismo que también se ve reflejado en el ámbito cultural. En este sentido, Disney es fuente de valores y comporta­mientos en la población infantil, de manera que sus mensajes son interiorizados por la ciudadanía del futuro. Toda una industria cultural que influye en la construcción de espacios, roles y estereotipos de hombres y mujeres en función del género. Así, el fin de esta investigación es analizar las características adscritas a las protagonistas femeninas y su evolución a lo largo de los años. Además de atestiguar si hay una progresión real hacia patrones más igualitarios respecto a los mensajes conservadores que han im­pregnado tradicionalmente sus productos audiovisuales. ¿Una expresión de un disfraz sutil del patriar­cado o un cambio real hacia una educación equitativa respecto al género?

Improved durability of concrete is mainly achieved with low-permeability. Permeability depends on permeability of the bulk cement paste (CP) and that of its interfacial transition zone (ITZ). Even though permeability of CP is well understood and can be adequately controlled, permeability of ITZ is not well understood yet. This paper shows that minimizing permeability of concrete requires minimizing permeability of CP by using a supplementary cementing material (SCM) such as natural pozzolans (NP) and minimizing ITZ by reducing aggregate content until maximum cement content. This was done by comparing performance of concrete made with ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and blended cement (OPC+NP) at the same w/b, and by comparing performance of concrete with different amount of ITZ at the same w/b. All of this was performed through testing of mechanical properties, air permeability, sorptivity, chloride ion diffusion, and aggregate specific surface. Results show that NP reduced air permeability by 84% and chloride ion diffusion by 66%, but increased sorptivity up to 140%. ITZ has an important effect in all properties; especially in air permeability where sensitive reduction of more than a 90% was achieved. ITZ effect seems to be as important as using SCMs in improving durability of concrete.

El presente artículo se propone contribuir al debate teórico sobre la naturaleza institucional de la difusión tecnológica, a la luz de la evidencia encontrada en el desarrollo de las iniciativas de acceso universal a Internet en Colombia, las cuales se enmarcan en la política de telecomunicaciones sociales, vigente desde 1995. Una vez introducidos los fundamentos que orientan la discusión teórica, y su aplicación concreta en el campo de las Tecnologías de la Información y la Comunicación (TIC), se exponen las lecciones más relevantes acerca de los condicionamientos institucionales que se desprenden de la interacción entre Estado y mercado, diseño de intervenciones públicas, y elecciones técnicas, para las oportunidades de acceso a Internet en las zonas rurales del país; en razón de la pertinencia que tiene actualmente la búsqueda de alternativas para viabilizar la vida en el campo, con ocasión de las proyecciones sobre los escenarios de pos-conflicto. Por último se esbozan las conclusiones que permiten desvirtuar algunos paradigmas que revisten las decisiones de acción pública, de las que surge el afianzamiento de la exclusión digital en el país.

En el presente trabajo se investiga la relación entre edad, sexo y nivel socio- económico en 1,019 niños de 5 años a 10 años, 11 meses a través del Test Guestáltico Visomotor de Bender, utilizándose los criterios de corrección de Koppitz. No se encontró diferencias significativas de acuerdo al sexo o nivel socio-económico. Al comparar los resultados de la muestra con los de Koppitz encontramos diferencias significativas para 8 de los 12 grupos estudiados. Así mismo se comprobó que la prueba sólo es evolutiva hasta los 9 años, tal como lo señala Taylor y col.

Abstract This study evaluated a recombinant aquaporin 1 protein of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (RmAQP1) as antigen in a vaccine against R. sanguineus. Five dogs were immunized with RmAQP1 (10 µg) + adjuvant (Montanide) (G1), and five were inoculated with adjuvant only (G2), three times. Twenty-one days after the last immunization, animals of both groups were challenged with R. sanguineus larvae, nymphs and adults, and their biotic potential was compared. Blood samples were collected before each immunization and every 28 days after the last immunization for 10 weeks. Serum antibody titers (IgG) were assessed by ELISA. We observed that: engorgement period of adult females from G1 was 12% shorter than G2; larvae from G1 had 8.7% longer engorgement period than G2 and weighed 7.2% less; nymphs from G1 had 4.5% shorter engorgement period than G2 and weighed 3.6% less; although the antibody titers increased following the second immunization, they rapidly decreased after the third immunization. Results indicated low immunoprotection of RmAQP1 against adult R. sanguineus ticks, and possible efficacy on larvae and nymphs fed on immunized dogs. Further studies should be performed for a full evaluation of the immunoprotection of RmAQP1 against R. sanguineus infestations in dogs.

This article describes a 6-step process for the translation and cross-cultural adaptation of counseling assessments from source document into a target language. An illustrative example is provided using the Brief Resilience Scale (Smith et al., 2008) and considerations for counseling researchers are discussed.
