International audience; We measure in a nondestructive and noncontact fashion the thicknesses of three scale films with thicknesses 28.5 ± 1.4 μm, 13.4± 0.9 μm, and 5.1 ± 0.3 μm on steel substrates employing terahertz time-of-flight tomography combined with advanced signal-processing techniques. Wüstite is the dominant phase in the scale films, though magnetite and hematite are also present. Because wüstite is electrically insulating, the incident terahertz electromagnetic pulses largely penetrate into the scale film; however, the pulses are entirely reflected by the underlying electrically conductive steel substrate. Because the film layers are thin, in some cases optically thin, the distinct pulses reflected at the air/scale and scale/steel interfaces overlap in time and thus are not visually evident in the reflected terahertz signal, necessitating the use of deconvolution techniques to recover the sample structure. We compare the merits of three deconvolution techniques, one unsuccessful (frequency-wavelet domain deconvolution) and two successful (sparse deconvolution and autoregressive extrapolation), to characterize the thicknesses of these scale films.

The performance of speech recognition systems is significantly degraded in the presence of noise. To solve the noise problem, there is a need to reconsider standard approaches by taking into account this new constraint. We first envisage two well-known cepstral representations (parametric and non-parametric) of speech signals and propose a unifying view of both schemes. We introduce a pseudo-autocorrelation domain, which can be interpreted as a “Root-cepstral domain”, and we show how non-parametric cepstral and linear predictive analyses converge to the same optimal solution. Experiments are carried out using an HMM-based isolated word recogniser for speaker-dependent and speaker-independent tasks in car noise environments.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior O presente trabalho buscou avaliar a aplicabilidade da tecnologia anaeróbia para tratamento de efluente de abatedouro de aves, onde foi testado de forma comparativa, o uso da água residuária bruta, pré-tratada por sistema de flotação por ar dissolvido (FAD) e pré-tratada com hidrólise alcalina. Na primeira etapa do trabalho foi realizada a caracterização da água residuária do abatedouro de aves. O sistema de tratamento adotado pela empresa é composto de um FAD seguido de três lagoas sendo a 1ª anaeróbia e a 2ª e 3ª facultativas. Esse sistema apresentou, durante a caracterização, eficiência de remoção de DQO bruta, DBO bruta e óleos e graxas de 92%, 99% e 98%, respectivamente. Em escala de laboratório foram operados simultaneamente três reatores anaeróbios (R1, R2 e R3). Em R1 foi utilizado água residuária bruta, em R2 água residuária pré-tratada pelo sistema FAD da empresa e em R3 água residuária bruta pré-tratada por hidrólise alcalina com NaOH 0,1% (m/v) no laboratório. Os reatores sofreram choque de carga orgânica no 19º dia de operação, por este motivo apresentaram diferentes condições antes e depois do choque de carga. A eficiência média de remoção de DQO em R1, R2 e R3 foram 71±4%, 68±4% e 75±4%, respectivamente. No entanto, apesar do fato de que possuíam eficiências de remoção aproximadas o reator R1 apresentou colmatação de gordura na parte superior e obstrução progressiva do leito reacional tendo sua operação finalizada por este fim. Em R2 foi observado lavagem de biomassa o que pode ter acarretado na eficiência média de 68%. Em R3 foi observado maior estabilidade em relação ao choque de carga, com manutenção de DQO efluente filtrada praticamente estável. Contudo R3 também apresentou flotação do lodo e colmatação de gordura, tendo sua alimentação impossibilitada, a operação também foi finalizada. Após o choque de carga foi verificado o acúmulo de ácidos orgânicos voláteis nos três reatores. O reator R1 não mostrou estabilidade em reverter esta situação. Em R2 apesar do acúmulo o sistema mostrou que talvez a acumulação de ácidos pudesse ser revertida, necessitando possivelmente de período operacional mais longo. O reator R3 apresentou, apesar do acúmulo, remoção de ácidos principalmente o ácido acético e o ácido propiônico garantido maior estabilidade ao reator. Sendo assim o reator R3 demonstrou bom desempenho na remoção de matéria orgânica e ácidos orgânicos voláteis, tendo maior estabilidade durante o choque de carga orgânica. Entretanto, um período mais longo seria necessário para avaliar estratégias a fim de impedir a flotação do lodo e colmatação de gordura no reator

In this contribution we address the problem of speech recognition in noise and mismatch (there is mismatch when the conditions of training are different from those of testing). We extend our previously reported work in two directions. First, a comparison of normalisation functions demonstrates that the root-based cepstral representation can still be significantly enhanced by an appropriate reinforcement of the most energetic speech portions, leading to a 10-15% increase in performance on raw data Second, we extend this concept and propose two root-adaptive schemes. Recognition tests demonstrate the noise robustness of the proposed analysis that further improves the results by a significant amount. >

The authors propose the use of a Root homomorphic approach instead of the classical Log in order to improve cepstral representation in noise. Recognition tests demonstrate the robustness of the Root-based analysis for noisy speech processing. It is shown that Root cepstral coefficients permit a heuristic extension of noise subtraction techniques into the cepstral domain. Finally, the authors extend their work to LP (linear prediction)-based cepstral analysis and show that the Root approach gives equivalent results when comparing direct (LFCC) and LP-based (LPCC) analysis schemes. A unified model is proposed, and it is concluded that both classical LPCC and LFCC analyses are suboptimal solutions of the authors' more general scheme. >
