Mountain insect biodiversity is unique, but is menaced by different drivers, particularly climate and land-use changes. In mainland Portugal, the highest mountain - Serra da Estrela - is one of the most important biodiversity hotspots, being classified as Natural Park since 1976. Many lepidopteran and odonate species, including rare and protected species, are known to occur in Serra da Estrela, but basic knowledge on their abundance, distribution and ecology is still lacking. Standardised sampling of these communities is crucial to provide valuable biological information to support short-term decision-making for conservation management, setting simultaneously the standards for mountain biodiversity monitoring aiming to tackle the effects of environmental change in the long-term.This study reports novel information on lepidopteran and odonate species diversity, distribution and abundance from Serra da Estrela Natural Park (Portugal). Seventy-two lepidopteran and 26 odonate species were sampled in this protected area, including the first findings of Apatura ilia (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), Macromia splendens (Pictet, 1843) and Vanessa virginiensis (Drury, 1773). New populations of Euphydrias aurinia (Rottemburg, 1775) and Oxygastra curtisii (Dale, 1834), protected species under the Habitats Directive, were found in this Natural Park and novel distribution and ecological data were collected for most species, including several rare species and subspecies [e.g. Aeshna juncea (Linnaeus, 1758), Coenonympha glycerion iphioides Staudinger, 1870, Cyaniris semiargus (Rottemburg, 1775) and Sympetrum flaveolum (Linnaeus, 1758)]. All data were collected using standardised sampling allowing its use as a baseline for biodiversity monitoring in Serra da Estrela.

Abstract Background Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) were increasing in Europe, and Spain and Catalonia were not an exception. Catalonia has been one of the regions with the highest number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in Spain. The objective of this study was to estimate the magnitude of the decline, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in the number of STI confirmed cases in Catalonia during the lockdown and de-escalation phases. Methods Interrupted time series analysis was performed to estimate the magnitude of decline in the number of STI reported confirmed cases - chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and lymphogranuloma venereum- in Catalonia since lockdown with historical data, from March 13th to August 1st 2020, comparing the observed with the expected values. Results We found that since the start of COVID-19 pandemic the number of STI reported cases was 51% less than expected, reaching an average of 56% during lockdown (50% and 45% during de-escalation and new normality) with a maximum decrease of 72% for chlamydia and minimum of 22% for syphilis. Our results indicate that fewer STIs were reported in females, people living in more deprived areas, people with no previous STI episodes during the last three years, and in the HIV negative. Conclusions The STI notification sharp decline was maintained almost five months after lockdown started, well into the new normality. This fact can hardly be explained without significant underdiagnosis and underreporting. There is an urgent need to strengthen STI/HIV diagnostic programs and services, as well as surveillance, as the pandemic could be concealing the real size of the already described re-emergence of STIs in most of the European countries.

Resumo Objetivo Investigar a relação entre capacidade física e qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde (QVRS) em idosos com osteoartrite sintomática de joelho (OAJ). Método Estudo observacional em 67 idosos (55 mulheres e 12 homens) com OAJ executaram: Timed Up and Go o (TUG); Teste de Levantar e Sentar da Cadeira em 30 segundos (TLS30); Teste de Subir e Descer Escada (TSDE); Teste de Caminhada Rápida de 40m (TCR40); Teste de Caminhada de Seis Minutos (TC6). A QVRS foi medida usando o Western Ontario McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC). Regressões lineares uni e multivariada foram utilizadas para explorar a relação entre as variáveis. Resultados Os pacientes eram predominantemente mulheres, com sobrepeso, inativas, não deprimidas, OAJ bilateral e dor intensa. Na QVRS, os domínios apresentaram baixo desempenho se comparados a indivíduos saudáveis. This cross-sectional study was structured to allow the evaluation of the respiratory, genotoxic, and cytotoxic effects of occupational exposure to products resulting from the activity of printers in typographies and, to determine the risk of genotoxicity associated with such exposure. This study comprised 69 subjects, 25 individuals occupationally exposed to the products of typographies (study group), and 44 individuals non-exposed to the environment studied (reference group). The frequency of micronucleated cells and other nuclear anomalies (binucleated, karyolitic, pyknotic, and karyorrhectic cells) in the oral epithelia of each subject were analyzed. The frequency of micronucleated cells was significantly higher in the study group when compared to the reference one (12.96 MN/2000 cells vs. 4 MN/2000 cells, respectively). Occupational exposure to products of typography is a risk factor for the occurrence of micronucleated cells in the study group (RR = 3.2; 95% CI, 2.7–3.9; p < 0.001). The results of the spirometry test did not reveal significant respiratory effects between the reference and study groups.

The ease of travel allowed by contemporary means of long-range transportation has brought increasingly higher numbers of visitors to remote and relatively undisturbed insular territories. In a framework of environmental conservation of the natural patrimony, sustainably accommodating touristic flooding and the associated polluting footprint poses a demanding challenge. Over the past decade, Ponta Delgada, the largest city of the mid-Atlantic Azores archipelago, has become a hotspot for transatlantic cruise ship (CS) lines in spring and autumn. CSs are substantial contributors to the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), as well as hazardous sulphur (SOx) and nitrogen (NOx) oxides. It is hereby retrospectively investigated whether the background levels of air pollutants were raised following the CS influx at Ponta Delgada, which conventionally displays great air quality. The daily CS traffic at the local harbor was associated with the daily concentrations of air pollutants (SO2, O3, NO2, NOx, PM10 and PM2.5), monitored by the local urban background monitoring station (~1.3 km northwards). Exceedances above daily legislated limits from 2013 until 2020 only occurred sporadically for PM10 and PM2.5, often during episodes of natural dust storms. No major correlation was found between CS parameters with the recorded values of pollutants, although a noticeable signal of NOX increase of southern origin is observed during spring days with CS presence. Daily data suggest CS influx has not strongly influenced background air quality. A near-source, real-time monitoring network should be implemented in the city to provide the necessary spatial and temporal resolution for tracking short-term fluctuations in air pollutants during CS arrivals and departures.

Iodine deficiency, the most common cause of preventable mental impairment worldwide, has been linked to poorer intellectual function in several studies. However, to our knowledge, no studies have been performed in moderate iodine-deficient schoolchildren using the complete form of Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III; Portuguese version). The main purpose of this study was to ascertain whether moderate iodine deficiency would affect the cognitive function of schoolchildren (7–11 years old; 3rd and 4th grades). Raven’s Colored Progressive Matrices (CPM; Portuguese version) were used for measuring the intelligence quotient (IQ) of the total population (n = 256; median UIC = 66.2 μg/L), and the WISC-III was used to study two selected subgroups: one moderately iodine-deficient (n = 30) and the other with adequate iodine intake (n = 30). WISC-III was shown to be the prime instrument for cognitive function assessment among moderate iodine-deficient schoolchildren; this subgroup had a Full-Scale IQ 15.13 points lower than the adequate iodine intake subgroup, with a magnitude effect of d = 0.7 (p = 0.013). Significant differences were also registered in 6 of the 13 Verbal-Performance IQ subtests. Moderate iodine deficiency has a substantial impact on mental development and cognitive functioning of schoolchildren, with significant impairment in both Performance IQ and Verbal IQ spectrum, adversely impacting their educational performance.

Objective This study aimed to assess the effect of pelleted and expanded sorghum-based feeds prepared with different moisture levels and particle size of ingredients on metabolizable energy, ileal digestibility of amino acids and broiler performance. Methods The experiment was performed with 720 male broiler chicks of the Cobb strain, with treatments of six replications, with 15 birds each; they were arranged in a completely randomized design and 2×2×2 factorial scheme (pelleted or expanded feed processing, 0.8% or 1.6% moisture addition in the mixer, and particle size of 650 or 850 microns). Results Higher pellet quality (pellets, % and pellet durability index [PDI]) was obtained in expanded diets and inclusion of 1.6% moisture. The particle size of 850 microns increased the PDI of final diet. All studied treatments had no significant effect on weight gain and broiler carcass and cut yields. Lower feed conversion occurred for birds fed pelleted feed at 42 d. The highest apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and apparent metabolizable energy corrected to zero nitrogen balance (AMEn) values of feed in the initial rearing phase (10 to 13 days) were observed in birds fed pelleted feed or for feed prepared with 1.6% moisture. The highest ileal digestibility coefficients of amino acids were obtained with the consumption of pelleted feed prepared with a particle size of 650 microns and 1.6% moisture. Conclusion Pelleted feed prepared with a milling particle size of 650 microns and 1.6% moisture provided increased ileal digestibility of amino acids and AMEn in the starter period. However, the expanded feed improved pellet quality and feed conversion of broilers at 42 days of age. We conclude that factors such as moisture, particle size and processing affect the pellet quality, and therefore should be considered when attempting to optimize broiler performance.

Stages of oocyte development were described for suruvi females (Steindachneridion scriptum) kept in captivity. Oocytes of 21 mature or maturing females and ovaries of 12 immature females were fixed in Karnovsky solution for 4 and 12 hours, respectively. After, they were processed for routine histology, embedded in paraffin and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. Slides were examined under a light microscope and the oocytes were measured using the LAS EZ software, using the average between the largest and the smallest diameter of each oocyte for representation. There were six types of oocytes: Chromatin nucleolus: found in immature females, with average diameter of 9.5 ± 4.46 μm; Perinucleolar: present in all developmental stages with average diameter of 67.6 ± 15.61 μm; Cortical alveolar: measuring 175.6 ± 56.58 μm; Vitellogenic: average diameter of 797.65 ± 136.10 μm; Mature: with average diameter of 1184.98 ± 171.13 μm and Atretic, which were found in mature or maturing females of suruvi.

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of dietary supplementation with propolis on hematology and number and area of melanomacrophage centers in spleen and kidney of tilapia. After acclimation, fish (24.7 ± 7.4 gmean weight) were distributed in 6 tanks 100 L, 6 fish per tank, in triplicate, at a temperature 24.0 ± 2.8oC, with two treatments: Fish fed 2% propolis supplemented diet and fish fed non-supplemented diet. To monitor the evolution of the effects, two samples were collected: half of the fish from each treatment were used after 15 days and the other half after 21, composing two feeding times. After each feeding time, blood, spleen and kidney were collected. After twenty one days feeding on 2% propolis supplemented diet, fish showed a lower number of total leukocytes and lymphocytes and an increase in the total erythrocytes number. Fish fed supplemented diet presented an increased number of melanomacrophage centers. We observed hemosiderin in all spleen samples. Kidney showed no significant difference on the presence of melanomacrophage centers containing hemosiderin. Despite these changes, the fish health status was not affected. The results showed that propolis supplementation in the diet ofNile tilapia may be physiologically feasible.

This research aimed to contribute with data related to the morphology and irrigation of the thymus of swine fetuses, resulting from the mating between Dalland and Penarlan breeds. For this, 40 swine fetuses (16 males and 24 females) were used, after natural death; they were donated by Granja Beira-Rio, from the town of Andradas (MG). The arterial vascular system of animals was filled in with an aqueous solution of colored latex (50% dilution), via thoracic aorta, then, there was fixation in stabilized formaldehyde (10% dilution), for later dissection of arteries directed towards the thymic lobes. The observations allowed us to report that thymus was irrigated by the direct and indirect branches of the right and left superficial cervical arteries, right and left common carotid arteries, right and left external thoracic arteries, and right and left internal thoracic arteries. The main arteries supplying the thymic cervical lobes were the superficial cervical arteries, while the thoracic lobe received a major number of branches from the right and left internal thoracic arteries. After the statistical analyses, it was possible to conclude that there is no correlation between the thymus size and the branches of arteries irrigating it.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi contribuir com dados relativos à morfologia e à irrigação do timo de fetos de suínos, resultantes do cruzamento entre as raças Dalland e Penarlan. Para tanto, foram utilizados 40 fetos de suínos (16 machos e 24 fêmeas), após óbito natural; eles foram doados pela Granja Beira-Rio, do município de Andradas (MG). O sistema vascular arterial dos animais foi preenchido com solução aquosa corada de látex (diluição a 50%), via aorta torácica, em seguida, houve fixação em formoldeído estabilizado (diluição a 10%), para posterior dissecação das artérias endereçadas aos lobos tímicos. As observações permitiram relatar que o timo foi irrigado por ramos diretos e indiretos das artérias cervicais superficiais direita e esquerda, carótidas comuns direita e esquerda, torácicas externas direita e esquerda e torácicas internas direita e esquerda. As principais artérias supridoras dos lobos tímicos cervicais foram as artérias cervicais superficiais, enquanto que o lobo torácico recebeu um maior número de ramos das artérias torácicas internas direita e esquerda. Após as análises estatísticas, foi possível concluir que não existe correlação entre o tamanho do timo e os ramos das artérias que o irrigam.

INTRODUÇÃO: O controle da obesidade mórbida pode ser realizado através da cirurgia bariátrica que leva à restrição e/ou à má-absorção de alimentos. O objetivo dessa revisão foi identificar consequências desse procedimento e suas repercussões na saúde bucal. MÉTODO: Foi realizada busca na Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde, sendo incluídos artigos com relação direta ou indireta entre cirurgia bariátrica e saúde bucal e publicados nos últimos dez anos. RESULTADOS: Verificaram-se algumas complicações decorrentes dessa operação, como regurgitação crônica e deficiências nutricionais, que podem trazer repercussões na cavidade bucal como erosão dentária, perda óssea e cárie dentária. Por outro lado, existem consequências positivas como controle da diabetes, da apnéia e melhora da auto-estima, que tornam os pacientes menos susceptíveis à complicações na cavidade oral, como xerostomia e doença periodontal. CONCLUSÃO: A manutenção da saúde bucal adequada em pacientes submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica contribui para o sucesso após a operação, resguardando os benefícios e minimizando os efeitos colaterais.INTRODUCTION: Morbid obesity control can be done by bariatric surgery that restricts or reduces the amount of food absorption. The objective of this review was to identify the consequences of bariatric surgery and its repercussions on oral health. METHOD: It was used the Virtual Library of Health, which included articles that had any direct or indirect connection between bariatric surgery and oral health, and published in the last ten years. RESULTS: Some complications of the surgery are chronicle reflux and nutritional deficiency, which may bring repercussions on the oral cavity, such as tooth erosion, bone loss and dental caries. On the other hand, there are also positive impacts, such as the decrease of diabetes, apnea and improvement on self-esteem, that makes the patients less vulnerable to complications regarding oral health, for example xerostomy and periodontal disease. CONCLUSION: Maintaining proper oral health in patients undergoing bariatric surgery contributes to success after surgery protecting benefits and minimizing side effects

PURPOSE: To evaluate oral changes, such as dental caries, periodontal disease, dental wear and salivary flow in bariatric patients. Fifty four obese patients who underwent bariatric surgery were studied before (n=54), up after 3 months (n=24) and 6 months (n=16). METHODS: Indices for evaluating oral conditions were: DMFT, CPI, DWI and salivary flow. OIDP questionnaire was used to assess the impact of oral health on quality of life. ANOVA and Spearman correlation were used (p0.05), presence of periodontal pockets in 50%, 58% and 50% of patients (p>0.05), tooth wear in dentin present in 81.5%, 87.5% and 87.5% before, 3 and 6 months after surgical treatment respectively. There were differences between the three periods for prevalence and severity of dental wear (p = 0.012). Salivary flow was 0.8±0.5 ml/min before surgery, 0.9±0.5 ml/min for 3 months and 1.1±0.5m/min for 6 months (p>0.05). The impact of oral health on quality of life decreased with time after bariatric surgery (p= 0.029). CONCLUSION: The lifestyle changes after bariatric surgery and these changes may increase the severity of pre-existing dental problems. However, these alterations in oral health did not influence the quality of life.OBJETIVO: Avaliar alterações bucais, como cárie dentária, doença periodontal, desgaste dentário e fluxo salivar, em pacientes bariátricos. MÉTODOS: Cinquenta e quatro pacientes obesos, submetidos à cirurgia bariátrica, tiveram suas condições bucais avaliadas antes (n=54), aos 3 meses (n=24) e aos 6 meses (n=16) após a cirurgia bariátrica. Os índices para avaliação das condições bucais foram: CPOD, IPC, IDD e o volume de fluxo salivar. O questionário OIDP foi utilizado para verificar o impacto da saúde bucal na qualidade de vida. ANOVA e correlação de Spearman foram utilizados para análise estatística (p0,05), bolsa periodontal foi encontrada em 50%, 58% e 50% dos pacientes (p>0,05) e o desgaste dentário em dentina em 81,5%, 87,5% e 87,5% dos pacientes, respectivamente antes, 3 meses e 6 meses após a cirurgia bariátrica. Houve diferença significativa entre os três períodos estudados, quanto à prevalência e à severidade do desgaste dentário (p=0,012). O fluxo salivar foi 0,8±0,5 ml/min antes, 0,9±0,5 ml/min aos 3 e 1,1±0,5 ml/min aos 6 meses após cirurgia (p>0,05). O impacto da saúde bucal na qualidade de vida diminuiu com o tempo decorrido após cirurgia bariátrica (p=0,029). CONCLUSÕES: As mudanças no estilo de vida após a cirurgia bariátrica podem aumentar a gravidade de problemas bucais pré-existentes. Entretanto, esta alteração na condição bucal pode não influenciar a qualidade de vida.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a concentração de flúor na água engarrafada comercializada, comparando-a aos valores impressos no rótulo da embalagem. Foram coletadas 229 amostras de água das 35 marcas disponíveis em diversos supermercados, mercearias e lanchonetes de grande circulação nas diferentes regiões do município de São Paulo, em 2006. A concentração de flúor foi determinada por análise em duplicata, utilizando o eletrodo íon-específico. A concentração de flúor variou entre 0,01 e 2,04 mg/l, com diferenças significantes entre os valores estipulados nos rótulos e os encontrados com a análise. Esses resultados reforçam a importância do controle dos níveis de flúor na água engarrafada por parte da vigilância sanitária.The objective of the study was to evaluate the fluoride concentration in bottled water available on the market, in comparison with the values printed on the bottle label. Two hundred and twenty-nine water samples were collected from 35 brands available in several supermarkets, grocery stores and snack bars with high turnover in different regions of the municipality of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, in 2006. Fluoride concentrations were determined by duplicate analysis using an ion-specific electrode. The fluoride concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 2.04 mg/l, with significant differences between the values stipulated on labels and those found in the analyses. These results emphasize the importance of controls over fluoride levels in bottled water enforced by the sanitary surveillance agency.

O estudo trata da identificação de estilos fluviais de fundos de vale segundo adaptação das propostas de Brierley e Fryirs (2005) e Rosgen (1994). Busca-se gerar um panorama espacial de classificação dos fundos de vale que possa ser útil para posteriores trabalhos, adotando um estudo de caso para ilustrar a aplicação da metodologia. O objetivo geral é identificar e classificar os estilos fluviais presentes nos fundos da bacia do Ribeirão do Gaia, pertencente à bacia do Alto Rio das Velhas, Minas Gerais. O vale deste ribeirão ilustra o panorama da geomorfologia fluvial da borda NE do Quadrilátero Ferrífero, um dos mais conhecidos e importantes domínios geomorfológicos do país. O trabalho baseou-se na integração de técnicas de gabinete e dados de campo para a elaboração de uma proposta de classificação dos fundos de vale, tendo como resultado a identificação de seis configurações. Cada configuração demonstra processos e formas fluviais específicos, assim como as consequências das ações antrópicas regionais.

This study quantified study projects involving human beings analyzed by the Research Ethics Committees (RECs) of University of São Paulo at Bauru, comprising the Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies and Bauru Dental School. The projects were analyzed by retrospective observational study in a six-year period (1998-2003), in all study areas. The sample comprised 1,246 study projects, being 687 at HRAC and 559 at FOB. The numbers of projects analyzed each year at HRAC and FOB were, respectively: 1998 (54, 8), 1999 (72, 38), 2000 (130, 78), 2001 (66, 138), 2002 (191, 195), and 2003 (174, 102). Projects were divided into approved (587, 381), not approved (13, 10), pending (62, 109) and approved with recommendation (25, 59). Projects submitted to the REC of HRAC were mainly related to Speech Therapy (174), followed by Applied Social Work (58); with regard to the REC of FOB, 101 addressed the area of Speech Therapy, followed by Prosthodontics (n=71), Orthodontics (n=69) and Public Health Dentistry (n=65). The main reasons for returning of the projects were: informed consent term; methodology; consent from the institutions; explanation on financial resources; incorrect filling of forms; risk definition; timetable. It was concluded that the role played by RECs is fundamental, since they assure the requirement of autonomy, and the requirement to protect those whose autonomy is reduced.

The aim of this study was to identify the impact of oral disease on the quality of life of morbid obese and normal weight individuals. Cohort was composed of 100 morbid-obese and 50 normal-weight subjects. Dental caries, community periodontal index, gingival bleeding on probing (BOP), calculus, probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, dental wear, stimulated salivary flow, and salivary pH were used to evaluate oral diseases. Este artigo tem por objetivo estudar as mulheres proprietárias de bens e escravos na cidade de São Paulo no período de 1840-1870, utilizando como fonte documental os testamentos do 3º Ofício da Família, pertencentes ao ATJSP (Arquivo do Tribunal de Justiça do Estado de São Paulo) e também ao acervo do CEDHAL (Centro de Demografia Histórica da América Latina). A proposta é analisar o processo de circulação de riqueza na cidade, buscando entender, principalmente, a constituição das fortunas femininas e a distribuição dos legados entre os herdeiros. Nesse sentido, será dada atenção especial às proprietárias com escravarias, de modo a compreender as condições em que as alforrias eram concedidas e qual era o papel desempenhado pelos cativos na transmissão dos patrimônios.

OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão sistemática da literatura sobre a associação entre o Diabetes Mellitus e as manifestações bucais. MÉTODO: Os métodos aplicados incluíram estratégia de busca na literatura e critérios de inclusão e exclusão para a seleção dos artigos a serem adotados. As bases de dados incluídas foram PubMed, SciElo, BBO e LILACS, até setembro de 2011. Os artigos selecionados investigaram a associação ou não do Diabetes Mellitus com manifestações bucais, excluindo a doença periodontal. RESULTADO: De 1164 artigos encontrados, 30 deles estavam de acordo com os critérios de inclusão, podendo permanecer no estudo. As manifestações bucais foram associadas com Diabetes Mellitus em 20 estudos. Os desfechos relacionados foram candidíase, hipossalivação, líquen plano bucal, estomatite por dentadura e lesões linguais. CONCLUSÃO: Os pacientes portadores de Diabetes Mellitus estão mais predispostos a apresentar candidíase e hipossalivação, podendo agravar muito determinadas condições de saúde bucal.

A Salmonella enterica serovar Abony outbreak occurred during January–April 2024 in Chile. Genomic evidence indicated that the outbreak strain was a clone of reference strain WDCM 00029, which is routinely used in microbiological quality control tests. When rare or unreported serovars cause human infections, clinicians and health authorities should request strain characterization.

One of the main limitations of conventional absorption-based X-ray micro-computed tomography imaging of biological samples is the low inherent X-ray contrast of soft tissue. To overcome this limitation, the use of ethanol as contrast agent has been proposed to enhance image contrast of soft tissues through dehydration. Some authors have shown that ethanol shrinks and hardens the tissue too much, also causing small tissue ruptures due to fast dehydration. However, the local tissue deformation occurring as a consequence of tissue dehydration and whether tissue shrinkage can modify myocardial architecture has not been quantified yet. The aim of this paper is to quantify the local myocardial tissue deformation due to ethanol dehydration based on 3D non-rigid registration and perform a detailed characterization of its myocardial tissue organization, before and after ethanol dehydration. A rat adult heart was imaged with synchrotron-radiation-based X-ray phase contrast imaging (X-PCI) three times: before, 9 h after and 342 h after ethanol immersion. The total volume shrinkage as well as changes in the left ventricular myocardial thickness were computed. Then, to determine local deformation of the heart caused by ethanol dehydration, the related 3D tomographic datasets were registered by means of a non-rigid registration algorithm. Finally, changes on the orientation and organization of myocytes were assessed. Our results show that the use of ethanol in synchrotron X-PCI can improve image contrast, but the tissue shrinkage is not homogeneous thus changing the local myocardial organization.

Abstract Quiescent cells require a continuous supply of proteins to maintain protein homeostasis. In fission yeast, entry into quiescence is triggered by nitrogen stress, leading to the inactivation of TORC1 and the activation of TORC2. In this study, we demonstrate that the Greatwall-Endosulfine-PPA/B55 pathway connects the downregulation of TORC1 with the upregulation of TORC2, resulting in the activation of Elongator-dependent tRNA modifications crucial for sustaining the translation programme during entry into quiescence. This mechanism promotes U34 and A37 tRNA modifications at the anticodon stem loop, enhancing translation efficiency and fidelity of mRNAs enriched for AAA versus AAG lysine codons. Notably, several of these mRNAs encode TORC1 inhibitors, TORC2 activators, tRNA modifiers, and proteins necessary for telomeric and subtelomeric functions. Therefore, we propose a mechanism by which cells respond to nitrogen stress at the level of translation, involving a coordinated interplay between tRNA epitranscriptome and biased codon usage.
