Appelé aujourd'hui Vanuatu, autrefois Nouvelles-Hébrides, ce chapelet d'une douzaine d'îles situées dans le Pacifique Sud, au nord-est de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, a une longue histoire de colonisation par l'Angleterre et la France. A l'époque du missionnaire écossais John Paton (1824-1907) le cannibalisme s'y pratiquait couramment, et c'est sous le titre de « John G. Paton, le grand apôtre des cannibales » que parut en 1898 la traduction française et abrégée de son autobiographie. On y admire l'extraordinaire persévérance et la foi invincible de ce disciple de Jésus-Christ, venu apporter en son nom le message évangélique de salut et de liberté, à des frères humains prisonniers de la superstition, et livrés à la sauvagerie. Paton a principalement travaillé sur deux petites îles, Tanna et Aniwa, mais ses tournées en Australie et en Écosse permirent de lever les fonds nécessaires à la construction d'un navire et au soutien des missionnaires qui allaient se consacrer à la poursuite de l'évangélisation de Vanuatu. A la fin du dix-neuvième siècle, John G. Paton était devenu une figure éminente du monde protestant anglo-saxon, notamment connue de Charles Spurgeon et de George Müller.

Percutaneous central venous catheterization (PCVC) is the insertion of a tube-like structure called a catheter through the skin into a peripheral vein and on into a central vein, for monitoring blood pressure in the vein or for obtaining blood samples for analysis. This procedure is now being used in infants with very low birth weights, who would otherwise require frequent venipuncture (puncture of a vein) for blood tests. The effects of PCVC on 317 infants who received a total of 478 percutaneous catheters during a three-year period were assessed. Two hundred and forty-one catheters were placed in infants weighing one kilogram (2.2 pounds) or less. The average length of time that an infant was catheterized was 13 days. Almost half of the catheters placed in the central and thoracic veins were removed, because of leakage or clotting in 43 percent of cases, and because of sepsis (infection) or blockage of a vein in 6 percent of cases. Of 23 cases of suspected sepsis, six resulted from the catheter and 12 were associated with another site of infection. Sepsis due to PCVC was associated with increased duration of catheterization, infection with Staphylococcus epidermidis, and infant weight of one kilogram or less. Sepsis due to infection unrelated to the catheter was associated with the presence of another infection site, previous infection, extremely low birth weight, and persistent clinical problems. PCVC decreased the stress associated with repeated venipuncture, reduced the incidence of complications to less than the rate associated with surgically-inserted central venous catheters, and helped in identifying factors that increase the risk of sepsis. This thesis reviews the method of Mafra, Schlotterer, and Stieberger (2011) for computing the full colour ordered N-point open superstring amplitude using the Pure Spinor formalism. We introduce relevant elements of super Yang-Mills theory and examine the basics of the Pure Spinor formalism, with a focus on tools for amplitude computation. We then define a series of objects with increasingly useful BRST transformation properties, which greatly simplify the calculations, and show how these properties can be determined using a diagrammatic method. Finally, we use the explicit four- and five-point amplitude computations as stepping stones to compute the general N-point amplitude, which factors into a set of kinematic integrals multiplying SYM subamplitudes.
