In the present investigation, a series of 3-aryl-4-methoxy N-alkyl maleimide 5a-l have been synthesized and screened for their antimicrobial activity against one Gram positive bacteria (S. aureus), one Gram negative bacteria (E. coli) and fungal strains (C. albicans, C. tropicalis, A. niger and A. clavatus). The structures of the compounds have been substantiated by their IR, NMR, mass and elemental analysis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of synthesized maleimides have been determined by broth microdilution method. Of the newly synthesized maleimides, compounds 5c, 5f, 5h, 5i, 5k and 5l registered significant activity against the tested microorganisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A series of 3-methoxy-4-phenyl-1-p-tolyl-1H-pyrrole-2,5-dione 5a-l were synthesized with almost 80 to 90% yield. All the maleimides were well characterised and screened against panel of four fungal strains and two bacterial strains. The structures of compounds were characterized by their IR, NMR, mass and elemental analysis. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of synthesized maleimides were carried out by broth microdilution method. Out of tested maleimides, compounds 5f and 5j registered significant activity antibacterial activity. While rest of compounds showed moderate to marginal antimicrobial activity. The article presents a study on the organic synthesis of cyclic nitrogen (N)-substituted imides. It states that acetic acid was used to produce amic acids from cyclic anhydrides and aniline. It mentions that amine has undergone acetic acid and cyclic anhydride treatment within 10 minutes and then sulfuric acid treatment for 45 minutes. It says that proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectrocopy and infrared spectroscopy were used in the study. It adds that the products of the experiment underwent purification by silica gel column chromatography with the use of choloform.

Conductive starburst C60-derived macromolecules were synthesized using C60(NO2)6 as a precursor intermediate for linking π-conjugate oligomers, such as tetraaniline and hexadecaaniline, directly onto the fullerene cage. Subsequent phenylhydrazine reduction of the resulting hexa(tetraanilino)[60]fullerene and hexa(hexadecaanilino)[60]fullerene emeraldines produced the corresponding leucoemeraldine donors. Photoexcitation of these hexa(oligoanilino)[60]fullerene leucoemeraldines under N2 induced intramolecular electron-transfer from benzenoid moieties of oligoaniline arms to the C60 cage, that regenerated the emeraldine structure in oligoaniline arms. Proceeding on the number of electrons transferred was followed and estimated by in situ chemical trapping method on the reaction of electrophiles with fullerenic anions generated.
