Patient experiential knowledge is important for the quality and responsiveness of healthcare systems. However, it is not rare for patients to struggle to have their knowledge recognised as credible and valuable. This study explores how patient organisations work to adjust patient knowledge to formats recognisable and acceptable by healthcare governance decision-makers. Using the case of patient organisations in Russia, we show that such formatting involves changes in language, practices, and materiality that contribute to channelling patient participation into specific routes and forms while marginalising others. Channelling of patient participation, then, rather than being a result of direct coercion, emerges as a distributed process continuously co-produced by a multitude of actors, such as state administration, patient organisations themselves, patient surveys, consultative spaces, and normative acts. Patients' experiential knowledge is increasingly documented as a valid form of knowledge in the health sector and is often said to be a source of valuable information to complement the knowledge of health professionals. Although this increased recognition is outlined in the health science literature and formalized in certain organizational and clinical contexts, it remains difficult for various actors of the health ecosystem to contour the different forms of knowledge patients acquire through their experience as well as to consider them as essential in co-building care plans and as an asset to build care relationships. The aim of this review is twofold: (1) to challenge the dominant model of knowledge in medicine and healthcare by making the various forms of patient knowledge more explicit and tangible and (2) to provide a better understanding of what experiential knowledge consists of by classifying the various forms of knowledge patient acquire, develop, and mobilize throughout their care journey. A narrative review allows to classify six types of patient knowledge according to their source of learning: embodied, monitoring, navigation, medical, relational, and cultural knowledge. Objective: Safe home tracheostomy care requires engagement and troubleshooting by patients, who may turn to online, AI‐generated information sources. This study assessed the quality of ChatGPT responses to such queries. Methods: In this cross‐sectional study, ChatGPT was prompted with 10 hypothetical tracheostomy care questions in three domains (complication management, self‐care advice, and lifestyle adjustment). Responses were graded by four otolaryngologists for appropriateness, accuracy, and overall score. The readability of responses was evaluated using the Flesch Reading Ease (FRE) and Flesch–Kincaid Reading Grade Level (FKRGL). Descriptive statistics and ANOVA testing were performed with statistical significance set to p <.05. Results: On a scale of 1–5, with 5 representing the greatest appropriateness or overall score and a 4‐point scale with 4 representing the highest accuracy, the responses exhibited moderately high appropriateness (mean = 4.10, SD = 0.90), high accuracy (mean = 3.55, SD = 0.50), and moderately high overall scores (mean = 4.02, SD = 0.86). Scoring between response categories (self‐care recommendations, complication recommendations, lifestyle adjustments, and special device considerations) revealed no significant scoring differences. Suboptimal responses lacked nuance and contained incorrect information and recommendations. Readability indicated college and advanced levels for FRE (Mean = 39.5, SD = 7.17) and FKRGL (Mean = 13.1, SD = 1.47), higher than the sixth‐grade level recommended for patient‐targeted resources by the NIH. Conclusion: While ChatGPT‐generated tracheostomy care responses may exhibit acceptable appropriateness, incomplete or misleading information may have dire clinical consequences. Further, inappropriately high reading levels may limit patient comprehension and accessibility. The article explains the processes involved in knowledge sharing and support giving in an open FB forum dedicated to endometriosis. It builds on the existing understanding of experiential knowledge, as well as adopts Jovchelovitch's (2007) perspective on knowledge diversity and representation which views knowledge construction as an intersubjective process. The analysis looks at the what, the who, and the how of the community in question, focusing in particular on three areas: identity work (self- and other-categorisation); perspective sharing and recognition by "significant others"; and epistemic self-other positioning. The analysis determines the most common strategies of categorisation, identifies ways of constructing shared understanding, as well as reveals that the participants' personal truths are based primarily on their embodied experience and hearsay. Introduction: Foot problems are very common in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Podiatric intervention through therapeutic education of RA patients on the different potential foot problems could improve patients' knowledge and management of their foot problems. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of RA patients on podiatric problems related to their illness and foot care practices. Methods: This was a cross‐sectional study including patients diagnosed with RA and aged older than 18 years. Sociodemographic data, disease characteristics, and therapeutic data were collected. RA foot problems knowledge and foot care practice were assessed using a questionnaire combining questions developed from the literature search and a pretested validated questionnaire. Results: Overall, 103 patients were included of whom 94 were female. The mean age was 56 years (±10 years) and the mean disease duration was 15 years (±10 years). Over 77% of patients reported never having received foot‐health‐related education. With regard to their knowledge about RA foot involvement, patients were aware that RA can affect the feet similarly to the hands (83%), lead to deformation of the foot (86%), lead to walking difficulties and falling (68%), and produce skin lesions of the foot (31%). Regarding participant's knowledge of appropriate footwear, 65% agreed that it would be beneficial to wear quality standard sports shoes. However, less than one‐third of patients know the podiatrist's skills. Conclusion: Our study showed an awareness of the repercussions of RA on feet but a lack of knowledge on proper foot care, thus identifying a need for foot health therapeutic education. Introduction: Gay and bisexual males and other LGBTQ+ communities are more frequently exposed to factors associated with an increased risk of human papillomavirus (HPV) acquisition. Vaccination is critical to protect against HPV+ head and neck cancer (HNC). We characterized the association of perceived level of risk of contraction with HPV knowledge, and vaccine decision‐making. Study Design: Cross‐sectional cohort. Setting: LGBTQ and general survey Reddit forums (control). Methods: A survey was shared amongst the online forums. Descriptive statistics characterized the data. Multivariable logistic regression was used to understand factors associated with vaccination, self‐perceived high risk, and knowledge of HPV + HNC. Results: Of 718 respondents, most were female (41.09%), Caucasian (59.89%), college‐educated (33.01%), and insured (77.15%) with a mean age of 30.75 years. Half were vaccinated (49.16%), with most unvaccinated endorsing interest (60.58%). Few dependents were vaccinated (25.91%), with interest in vaccination among parents of unvaccinated children (38.58%). Knowledge of HIV's association with HPV (62.95%), HPV causing HNC (55.57%), and the vaccine's efficacy against HNC (55.57%) was also moderate. Identifying female (P =.042), a self‐perceived high‐risk (P <.001), and having vaccinated children (P <.001) increased vaccination likelihood; transgender (P =.021), or lesbian or gay sexual identity (P <.001) decreased likelihood. Personal HNC diagnosis (P <.001), self‐vaccination (P <.001), having vaccinated children (P <.001), having anal sex (P =.001) or no knowledge of past HPV status (P <.001) increased likelihood of high self‐perceived risk. Conclusion: Efforts to improve public education regarding the association between HPV and HNC and vaccination efficacy are required to better inform vaccine decision‐making among individuals at risk for HPV infection. Introduction: To date, lung cancer is one of the most lethal diagnoses worldwide. A variety of lung cancer treatments and modalities are available, which are generally presented during the patient and doctor consultation. The implementation of decision tools to facilitate patient's decision‐making and the management of their healthcare process during medical consultation is fundamental. Studies have demonstrated that decision tools are helpful to promote health management and decision‐making of lung cancer patients during consultations. The main aim of the present work within the I3LUNG project is to systematically review the implementation of decision tools to facilitate medical consultation about oncological treatments for lung cancer patients. Methods: In the present study, we conducted a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines. We used an electronic computer‐based search involving three databases, as follows: Embase, PubMed, and Scopus. 10 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included. They explicitly refer to decision tools in the oncological context, with lung cancer patients. Results: The discussion highlights the most encouraging results about the positive role of decision aids during medical consultations about oncological treatments, especially regarding anxiety, decision‐making, and patient knowledge. However, no one main decision aid tool emerged as essential. Opting for a more recent timeframe to select eligible articles might shed light on the current array of decision aid tools available. Conclusion: Future review efforts could utilize alternative search strategies to explore other lung cancer‐specific outcomes during medical consultations for treatment decisions and the implementation of decision aid tools. Engaging with experts in the fields of oncology, patient decision‐making, or health communication could provide valuable insights and recommendations for relevant literature or research directions that may not be readily accessible through traditional search methods. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge of patients with hypertension about their condition, adherence to antihypertensive medication, and the factors influencing it. A cross-sectional study was conducted in two cardiology outpatient clinics of two tertiary hospitals, in Greece. The study included 188 patients diagnosed with hypertension. The patients' knowledge about their disease and adherence to medication were assessed by using the HK-LS and A-14 scales, respectively. Patients had sufficient knowledge levels about their disease, but significantly low levels of adherence to medication. Patients with higher knowledge levels were more adherent to medications [r(188) = 0.885, p < 0.001]. By using multivariate analysis, higher age (p = 0.018), residence in a more populous area (p = 0.041), more years with the disease (p = 0.012), and a lower number of medications (p = 0.03) were associated with higher levels of knowledge. Conversely, younger age (p = 0.036), lower educational levels (p = 0.048), fewer years with the disease (p = 0.001), and a higher number of medications (p = 0.003) were associated with lower adherence to medication. The Greek patients' hypertension knowledge was sufficient; however, adherence to medication was significantly low. Healthcare managers could utilize our findings to design targeted interventions for improving adherence to medication for these patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: With 10 million cases around the world, pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) has been classified as a highly contagious disease and mostly affecting low and middle countries. Having the second highest incident cases in West Java of Indonesia, Cirebon becomes a challenging city in order to reduce the number of TB cases in the country. Aims: This study aims to identify the patients’ knowledge and treatment phases, and how the two factors encourage patients to comply with their medication. Methods : This cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 91 new pulmonary tuberculosis patients at the Cirebon City Community Lung Health Centre, selected using random sampling. Not only respondent characteristics, but also data on the patients' knowledge levels, treatment phases, and medication adherence were collected using a questionnaire and medical records. To assess the relationship between these variables, the collected data was then analyzed using the Spearman Correlation test. Ethical clearance was obtained from the Health Research Ethics Commission, and informed consent was gathered from all participants. Results: This study reveals the most updated characteristics of the Tuberculosis patients at the Cirebon City Community Lung Health Center aged 15-64 years old with treatment duration ranged 1-6 months. The majority have insufficient knowledge about tuberculosis (45.1%), and 75.8% of patients adhered to their prescribed medication regimen, regardless of their knowledge level. The data indicates a significant positive correlation between knowledge level and medication adherence (p = 0.015), with 95% of patients with good knowledge adhering to treatment compared to only 34% with poor knowledge. Furthermore, there is a significant relationship between adherence and treatment duration (p = 0.002), as 85% of patients who adhered to treatment did so for more than two months. Conclusion: The study shows that patients with better knowledge of tuberculosis are more likely to stick to their medication, which also leads to longer treatment durations. Given the high incidence of TB in the region, these findings suggest the need for targeted educational programs to enhance patients' understanding of TB, thereby improving adherence to treatment protocols. PurposeIn pursuit of more equitable and person-centered health care, patients and professional medical societies increasingly call for better clinician understanding of patients' perspectives and social contexts. A foundational but understudied aspect of patients' social contexts are the ideas they encounter about health-related behaviors. We investigated this aspect of the social contexts of birthing people, comparing those with public versus private insurance to discover setting-specific insights.MethodsBased on ethnographic fieldwork, we created an original survey featuring 29 statements about 12 prenatal, perinatal, and postpartum health behaviors (e.g., drinking alcohol, epidural use, breastfeeding). Participants were 248 individuals receiving prenatal care in Northern California in 2009-2011, split evenly between public- and private-payer coverage. Participants reported whether they were familiar or unfamiliar with each statement.ResultsNinety-eight percent of all participants had heard contradictory ideas about ≥1 health behavior (mean=3.9 behaviors for public- and 5.4 for private-coverage respondents). For 20 of the 29 behavior-related ideas, exposure varied significantly by coverage type. Among other differences, public-coverage respondents were much more familiar with ideas related to risk and constrained autonomy (e.g., that serious perinatal complications are common; that new mothers should try to breastfeed even if they do not want to).ConclusionsBirthing people are exposed to a wide range of ideas about health behaviors, many of which vary by the structural systems in which they are embedded. Understanding and engaging this complexity can help clinicians to provide more respectful, person-centered, and equitable maternity care.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to develop a question prompt list (QPL) to support patients undergoing work-related medical rehabilitation in obtaining relevant information and to explore how patients and physicians rate the QPL regarding its usefulness, practicability, and perceived (additional) effort. Methods: An initial item pool was assessed by rehabilitation patients (N=3) in cognitive interviews, rated by physicians and other health professionals (N = 11), and then further modified. The final QPL version (16 items) was used by patients (N = 36) in medical admission interviews in an inpatient medical rehabilitation facility and then evaluated. Physicians evaluated the QPL after each interview with a study participant (N=6; k = 39 interviews). Results: The QPL was used by 50% of patients who rated its usefulness and comprehensibility positively. Neither the need for information nor satisfaction with the information received was correlated with QPL use. The physicians' assessment showed a positive evaluation regarding the provision of information and structuring of the conversation, but also a higher perceived time expenditure. Discussion: While initial testing of the QPL in work-related medical rehabilitation as a tool to support patient-provider communication generally showed a favorable evaluation by patients using it and physicians, future research should address its validity and effectiveness. Objective: We characterize clinician information‐sharing and parent verbal engagement during pediatric adenotonsillectomy consultations and evaluate whether these behaviors relate to disease‐specific knowledge for parents of children with obstructive sleep‐disordered breathing (OSDB). Study Design: Mixed‐methods sequential explanatory analysis. Setting: Outpatient otolaryngology clinics. Methods: We analyzed audio‐recorded communication during outpatient encounters for children undergoing initial evaluation for adenotonsillectomy. We identified discrete triadic instances of clinician discussion of individual risks and benefits, parent verbal responses coded as passive ("Right") or active ("Would that repeat the recovery time?"), and corresponding parent answer (correct or incorrect) on a postconsult knowledge questionnaire. Primary outcomes included parent knowledge and decisional conflict. We qualitatively analyzed substantive questions asked by parents during the encounter. Results: In 30 consults, clinicians (n = 8) provided 156 instances of discussion (101 risk, 55 benefit), to which parents provided 34% active responses. Clinician discussion of risks and benefits was associated with greater parent knowledge (odds ratio [OR] = 3.70, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.25‐6.09; P <.001), however parent active engagement was not associated with greater parent knowledge (OR = 1.04, 95% CI: 0.42‐2.58, P =.93). Parents demonstrated greater knowledge of benefits than risks (χ2 = 23.16, V = 1.13; P <.001). Parents who responded actively (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.09‐0.72; P =.010) or had greater knowledge (OR = 0.41, 95% CI: 0.21‐0.81; P =.010) had less decisional conflict. Conclusion: Clinician information‐sharing was associated with greater parent knowledge about OSDB treatment. Greater parent engagement and knowledge were independently associated with less decisional conflict. Recently, lifestyle and dietary factors have been linked in epidemiological studies with an alteration of the risk of gout; however, there remains a lack of data on patient knowledge of these factors. The purpose of this survey-based study was to determine the knowledge of gout and its treatment both in the community and specialist care settings.Methods: Participants were recruited from a hospital rheumatology outpatient department, consumer organization and a random sample of participants from a population-based cohort who had self-reported gout in South Australia. Participants completed a survey regarding basic demographics, the Single Item Literacy Screener, use of medication and diet for treatment of their gout and knowledge of gout.Results: Seventy-four people were recruited (87% male) with a mean age of 66 years (range 35– 88). The mean duration of gout was 16.6 years (range 0– 60). On screening with SILS, 19.0% were identified as having limited reading ability. Most gout was managed by the family practitioner (81.1%) and/or rheumatologist (18.9%). In regard to current gout medications, 52.7% were taking allopurinol, 17.6% colchicine, 9.5% non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, 6.8% prednisolone and 5.4% herbal preparations. For further information regarding gout, participants would most commonly approach their general practitioner (85.1%). Most participants correctly identified certain triggers to gout attacks and almost half of participants (41.9%) reported that they had altered their diet due to gout. Conversely, participants often incorrectly identified common risk or protective factors for gout.Conclusion: Gout remains a common, yet undertreated, chronic condition. Our study highlights a lack of knowledge amongst patients of risk and protective factors in relation to gout. The increasing prevalence of gout within the population indicates a need to improve education and understanding among those with the condition.Keywords: gout, patient knowledge, risk factors, protective factors

Abstract One‐fourth of death in India is attributed to cardiovascular disease (CVD) and more than 80% is related to ischemic heart disease and stroke. The main risk factor for CVD is hypertension. Every third person in India suffers from hypertension and the prevalence increased drastically in the past 20 years, especially among the youngest age group of 20 and 44 years. Regardless of being under anti‐hypertension medication, the blood pressure (BP) control rate in the country is still low ranging between 6% and 28% only. Assessing the “true BP control rate” should be performed using both clinic BP measurement and out‐of‐office BP measurement as the latter shows better prognosis for patients’ hypertension and CVD outcomes. Home blood pressure monitoring (HBPM) shows superiority over ambulatory BP measurement as multiple measurements can be collected at the patient's convenience. Only limited evidence on HBPM in India is available and it's either lacking in hypertension participants or of a small sample size. This study will investigate the real BP control status among 2000 hypertensive patients from 18 centers in 12 states across Pan‐India. The outcome of this study will emphasize the value of establishing BP control management practice guidelines suitable for physicians and help policymakers in building proper strategies for hypertension management to reduce the CVD burden on the health situation in India.

In this article, I explore knowledge practices in increasingly digitized, data-driven, and personalized healthcare settings by empirically focusing on the "looper community" in type 1 diabetes. This community develops and uses open-source automated insulin delivery systems and frequently criticizes slow innovation cycles and data monopolies of commercial device manufacturers. Departing from the literature on patient knowledge, I argue that studying these knowledge practices at the intersection of digitized and personalized health care, open-source innovation, and patient activism calls for an expansion of the theoretical notions of patient knowledge. Empirically I map out three knowledge practices: technical, including maintenance and repair work; recursive, including the building and maintenance of adjunct care and support structures; and methodological, including scientistic forms of self-experimentation. I propose "elaborative tinkering" to foreground the nuances of when and how patients' different forms of knowledge practices intertwine and when they are kept apart. Purpose: ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) program with natural language processing. We analyzed ChatGPT's knowledge about urolithiasis whether it can be used to inform patients about urolithiasis. Methods: Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about urolithiasis on the websites of urological associations and hospitals were analyzed. Also, strong recommendation-level information was gathered from the urolithiasis section of the European Association of Urology (EAU) 2022 Guidelines. All questions were asked in order in ChatGPT August 3rd version. All answers were evaluated separately by two specialist urologists and scored between 1 and 4, where 1: completely correct, 2: correct but inadequate, 3: a mix of correct and misleading information, and 4: completely incorrect. Results: Of the FAQs, 94.6% were answered completely correctly. No question was answered completely incorrectly. All questions about general, diagnosis, and ureteral stones were graded as 1. Of the 60 questions prepared according to the EAU guideline recommendations, 50 (83.3%) were evaluated as grade 1, and 8 (13.3%) and 2 (3.3%) as grade 3. All questions related to general, diagnostic, renal calculi, ureteral calculi, and metabolic evaluation received the same answer the second time they were asked. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that ChatGPT accurately and satisfactorily answered more than 95% of the questions about urolithiasis. We conclude that applying ChatGPT in urology clinics under the supervision of urologists can help patients and their families to have better understanding on urolithiasis diagnosis and treatment. Background. As dental implants become a more popular treatment option for restoring missing teeth, it is significant for a dentist to understand patients' level of knowledge toward implants, to avoid potential miscommunication and unrealistic expectations. Objectives. To determine the knowledge level regarding dental implants among patients applying for prosthetic treatment. Materials and methods. The study was conducted among patients from the Department of Prosthetic Dentistry at Wroclaw Medical University, Poland. A questionnaire composed of 11 questions was distributed to 232 patients, of which 225 were qualified for the study. The chi-square test of independence (χ2) was used to analyze the association between parameters of interest and groups of patients. The strength of studied relationships was measured with Cramer's V. Results. Patients showed limited knowledge of implants. Of the respondents, 75.6% heard about dental implants; however, 40% considered the dental implant as a set of a screw with a fixed crown. The major concern was the high cost (69.4%), followed by the need for surgery (31.2%). The Internet was the most popular source of information. The source of treatment financing has a strong correlation to the willingness to undergo treatment. Conclusions. The study group demonstrated not a satisfactory extent of knowledge regarding dental implants. Dental professionals should make an effort to provide sufficient information to patients to avoid misunderstandings about the treatment. IntroductionThe purpose of this study was to develop a question prompt list (QPL) to support patients undergoing work-related medical rehabilitation in obtaining relevant information and to explore how patients and physicians rate the QPL regarding its usefulness, practicability, and perceived (additional) effort.MethodsAn initial item pool was assessed by rehabilitation patients (N = 3) in cognitive interviews, rated by physicians and other health professionals (N = 11), and then further modified. The final QPL version (16 items) was used by patients (N = 36) in medical admission interviews in an inpatient medical rehabilitation facility and then evaluated. Physicians evaluated the QPL after each interview with a study participant (N = 6; k = 39 interviews).ResultsThe QPL was used by 50% of patients who rated its usefulness and comprehensibility positively. Neither the need for information nor satisfaction with the information received was correlated with QPL use. The physicians' assessment showed a positive evaluation regarding the provision of information and structuring of the conversation, but also a higher perceived time expenditure.DiscussionWhile initial testing of the QPL in work-related medical rehabilitation as a tool to support patient-provider communication generally showed a favorable evaluation by patients using it and physicians, future research should address its validity and effectiveness.

They completed the validated Atrial Fibrillation Knowledge Scale (AFKS), a 11-item instrument (with possible score 0– 10, 10 being the best knowledge) which evaluates knowledge pertaining to AF in general, AF symptom detection and AF treatment. Health literacy was assessed with the 16 item European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q) and patients answered questions about their background. Data was analysed with parametric tests.Results: In total, 185 participants completed the questionnaire (mean age 63 ± 10), 77% were male, 74% with previous electrical cardioversion and 76% were on non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulants (NOAC) medication. The mean score on the AFKS was 6.5 (± 1.8). The best knowledge was concerning oral anticoagulation therapy (96% answered correctly) and the least knowledge was regarding responses to AF episodes (17% answered correctly). Patients with sufficient health literacy (52%) had better knowledge of AF (M 6.8 ± 1.7 vs M 6.3 ± 1.9, p = 0.05). Age, educational level, health literacy and AF pattern explained 22% of the variance in AF knowledge.Conclusion: Patients with AF have inadequate knowledge of their condition, potentially as a result of insufficient health literacy. Abstract Background Digital decision aids are becoming increasingly common in many areas of healthcare. These aids are designed to involve patients in medical decision making, with the aim of improving patient outcomes while decreasing healthcare burden. Previously developed contraceptive-based decision aids have been found to be effective at increasing women’s knowledge about reproductive health and contraception. Here, we sought to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel contraceptive-based decision aid at increasing women’s self-efficacy and knowledge about their reproductive health and contraceptive options, as well as their perceptions of their learning. This study was registered as a clinic trial at ClinicalTrials.gov (Contraception Decision Aid Use and Patient Outcomes, ID# NCT05177783) on 05/01/2022. Methods The Tuune® contraceptive decision aid’s effectiveness was evaluated by conducting an experiment in which 324 women were assigned to use the Tuune® decision aid or a control decision aid. Primary outcomes included reproductive health self-efficacy, reproductive health and contraceptive knowledge, and perceptions of learning. Secondary analyses examined whether prior experience using hormonal contraceptives moderated the relationship between decision aid and each outcome measure. Results Women assigned to use the Tuune® decision aid exhibited greater reproductive health self-efficacy, greater knowledge about reproductive health and contraception, and perceived having learned more than women assigned to use the control decision aid (ps ≤ .029). This pattern was also observed in women with previous contraceptive use experience, where women using Tuune® reported better outcomes than women using the control aid, regardless of their history of hormonal contraceptive use experience, although this interaction was not significant (p = .089). Conclusions Use of the Tuune® contraceptive-based decision aid improved each of the predicted outcomes relative to a control decision aid. This suggests that use of the Tuune® contraceptive-based decision aid is well poised to increase women’s confidence and knowledge about contraceptive use and may also reduce burden on healthcare systems.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major public health concern globally with higher prevalence in Middle Eastern countries. Both Saudi Arabia and the UAE face critical challenges in HBV treatment and management despite the implementation of a mass vaccination program. This review aimed to understand the gaps and unmet needs related to HBV infection, public health challenges associated with its diagnosis, and treatment barriers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Additionally, the review aimed to provide the best practices in the HBV care pathway for effective remedial measures and disease reduction. Methods: The literature search was done from Pubmed. Results: The lack of disease awareness and knowledge about disease transmission among patients and their family members and healthcare professionals, lack of proper screening, underdiagnosis, social stigma, lack of established referral system, and treatment cost are the primary barriers to HBV diagnosis and management. Conclusion: Appropriate healthcare initiatives should be undertaken to lower the disease burden in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Abstract Background Preventing peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis remains a major concern in continuing safe treatment and improving patient quality of life. This study aimed to determine the self-care education and quality care initiatives performed for patients undergoing PD and explored their association with patient self-care knowledge and behavior regarding peritonitis prevention. Methods A nationwide cross-sectional survey was conducted with PD patients and their nurses in Japanese hospitals as respondents. Nurses provided the regular practice of self-care education and quality care initiatives for PD patients within the hospital while patients answered questions on their self-care knowledge and behaviors. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to explore the factors of patients’ self-care knowledge and behaviors. Results We analyzed data on 170 patients (mean age: 65.1 years old) matched with those of 58 nurses from 58 hospitals. Although most educational contents were taught, teaching methods varied; evaluating patients’ learning levels and re-educating during follow-up periods were less frequently performed. As for quality care initiatives, 60% of hospital nurses monitored peritonitis rates, 33% shared peritonitis-associated information with relevant departments, and 47% had performed home visits before PD patients' discharge in the past. The factors of patients’ self-care knowledge include nurses’ re-educating during follow-ups (odds ratio (OR) = 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.01–1.22, p = 0.025), sharing information with relevant departments (OR = 1.66, 95% CI = 1.01–2.74, p = 0.047), and patients’ younger age (OR = 0.98, 95% CI = 0.96–1.00, p = 0.019). Hospitals performing home visits and patients’ perceived social support were associated with both self-care knowledge (OR = 1.16, 95% CI = 1.01–1.34, p = 0.038 and OR = 1.33, 95% CI = 1.10–1.61, p = 0.003, respectively) and behavior (OR = 1.29, 95% CI = 1.02–1.64, p = 0.031 and OR = 1.61, 95% CI = 1.14–2.28, p = 0.007, respectively). Conclusions Re-education during follow-up visits, sharing information, and home visits before discharge may benefit patients in promoting peritonitis preventive self-care.

Objective: We aim to assess and quantify basic knowledge about TAO in patients presenting to an endocrinology clinic and the effect of different educational materials on patients' knowledge. Methods: This study was conducted in a tertiary care center involving 255 patients presenting to an endocrinology clinic. The study was divided into three consecutive phases: 1. a control phase without any educational materials in the waiting room, 2. exposure to educational posters, and 3. exposure to educational pamphlets. Results: In the control population, only 16.5% of patients reported having knowledge of TAO, with a low average TAO-K score of 29.8 (out of 100). Background: Evaluation of diabetes knowledge plays a pivotal role in identifying and addressing patients' knowledge gaps. The implementation of a standardized diabetes knowledge assessment tool is important to ensure consistent scoring and facilitating the development of effective and standardized education programs. Aim: To develop and validate a patient diabetes knowledge questionnaire (PDKQ) to assess knowledge of diabetes mellitus patients. Methods: The development of the PDKQ questionnaire involved three phases: item development, content validation, and reliability testing. In the item development phase, the initial draft of the PDKQ, comprising a multiple-choice answer questionnaire was developed. The content validation phase comprised two stages. Firstly, ten experts participated in the expert validation process, followed by face validation involving six patients. In the final phase, test–retest analysis was performed among diabetes mellitus patients to assess reliability. Results: The first draft of PDKQ consisted of 11 patient characteristics items and 37 items of multiple choices questions. During the expert validation, three items were eliminated due to low clarity, and an additional six items were removed as they were deemed irrelevant or unimportant. During the face validation, three patients' characteristic items and eight multiple-choice questions were excluded due to a content validity index of less than 0.83. In the test–retest phase, 36 subjects responded to 8 items pertaining to patients' characteristics and 20 multiple-choice questions. The test–retest analysis yielded an intraclass correlation coefficient of 0.88, indicating good reliability. Conclusion: The 20-item PDKQ is a reliable and robust tool in assessing the knowledge of diabetes mellitus patients in Malaysia. Its implementation allows standardized assessment of diabetic patients' knowledge levels, enabling targeted interventions to empower patients and optimize diabetes care practices. Purpose: Primary prophylactic granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (PP-CSFs) are prescribed alongside chemotherapy regimens that carry a significant risk of febrile neutropenia (FN). As part of S1415CD, a prospective, pragmatic trial evaluating the impact of automated orders to improve PP-CSF prescribing, we evaluated patients’ baseline knowledge of PP-CSF and whether that knowledge improved following the first cycle of chemotherapy. Methods: Adult patients with breast, colorectal, or non-small-cell lung cancer initiating chemotherapy were enrolled in S1415CD between January 2016 and April 2020. Eight questions assessing knowledge of CSF indications, risks, benefits, and out-of-pocket costs were included in a baseline survey and in a follow-up survey at the end of the first cycle of chemotherapy. Responses were stratified by the trial arm and whether chemotherapy was low, intermediate, or high FN risk. Results: Of the 3605 eligible patients, 3580 (99.3%) completed the baseline survey, and 3420 (95.5%) completed the follow-up survey. At baseline, 803 (22.4%) patients responded “Don’t know” to all 8 questions, and all patients averaged 2.75 correct questions. At follow-up, knowledge increased by 0.34 in the high-FN-risk group (p < 0.001) but declined for the other FN-risk groups. In multivariate analysis, receiving a high-FN-risk regimen and younger age were significantly associated with knowledge improvement. Conclusion: Chemotherapy patients had poor knowledge of PP-CSF that improved only modestly among recipients of high-FN-risk chemotherapy. Further efforts to inform patients about the risks, benefits, and costs of PP-CSF may be warranted, particularly for those in whom prophylaxis is indicated. Patient education plays a crucial role in improving healthcare outcomes and ensuring high-quality care. The objective of this study was to assess patient satisfaction and knowledge about transcatheter arterial chemoembolization after watching some video-based education. A quasi experimental design was employed, involving 30 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and their family caregivers. All participants received specialized video-based education on transcatheter arterial chemoembolization before undergoing the procedure. Pretest and post-test knowledge scores were compared using Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed ranks test, and satisfaction scores were analyzed and evaluated. The findings demonstrated a significant increase in post-test scores compared to pretest scores for all participants (p -value <.001). Moreover, participants who had prior experience with the procedure exhibited higher pretest scores than those who did not. Nevertheless, both groups experienced a significant improvement in post-test scores (p -value <.001). Additionally, all participants expressed high levels of satisfaction with the video-based education. In conclusion, video-based education effectively enhanced participants' knowledge of the transcatheter arterial chemoembolization procedure and yielded high patient satisfaction. Background: Adherence to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) medication is crucial to maintain remission, especially during pregnancy. Objective: To examine the influence of family planning and pregnancy-related patient knowledge regarding IBD and pregnancy on adherence. Design: Cross-sectional survey study Methods: We surveyed female patients with IBD aged 18–35 years, who at recruitment to the UK IBD BioResource had not had children. We elicited disease and treatment history, demographics and family planning status via an online questionnaire. Patient knowledge as assessed by the validated Crohn's and Colitis Pregnancy Knowledge Score (CCPKnow) and adherence by visual analogue scale (VAS). Results: In 326 responders (13.8% response rate), good adherence (VAS ⩾ 80) was found in only 38.35%. Disease- and treatment-related factors were not significantly associated with good adherence, except for methotrexate (70.0% adherent of 10 exposed patients versus 37.2% non-exposed; p = 0.036). Patients planning pregnancy for the next year were more often adherent (59.0% versus 35.5%; p = 0.019) and knowledgeable (median CCPKnow 8 versus 7; p = 0.035) compared to those in other family planning categories. Pregnancy-related patient knowledge was significantly associated with adherence (Pearson correlation 0.141; p = 0.015). Adherent patients had significantly higher CCPKnow scores than non-adherent patients (median 8 versus 6; p = 0.009). On binary regression analysis, only planning to conceive within 12 months was independently associated with better adherence (p = 0.016), but not methotrexate exposure (p = 0.076) and CCPKnow (p = 0.056). Conclusions: In a cohort of women of childbearing age with IBD overall medication, adherence was low. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge of patients with hypertension about their condition, adherence to antihypertensive medication, and the factors influencing it. A cross-sectional study was conducted in two cardiology outpatient clinics of two tertiary hospitals, in Greece. The study included 188 patients diagnosed with hypertension. The patients’ knowledge about their disease and adherence to medication were assessed by using the HK-LS and A-14 scales, respectively. Patients had sufficient knowledge levels about their disease, but significantly low levels of adherence to medication. Patients with higher knowledge levels were more adherent to medications [r(188) = 0.885, p < 0.001]. By using multivariate analysis, higher age (p = 0.018), residence in a more populous area (p = 0.041), more years with the disease (p = 0.012), and a lower number of medications (p = 0.03) were associated with higher levels of knowledge. Conversely, younger age (p = 0.036), lower educational levels (p = 0.048), fewer years with the disease (p = 0.001), and a higher number of medications (p = 0.003) were associated with lower adherence to medication. The Greek patients’ hypertension knowledge was sufficient; however, adherence to medication was significantly low. Healthcare managers could utilize our findings to design targeted interventions for improving adherence to medication for these patients.

Aim: To explore the care experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians diagnosed with cirrhosis with a focus on support needed. Background: Cirrhosis disproportionately affects Indigenous Australians, and liver diseases contribute to the mortality gap between Indigenous and other Australian adults. Design: A qualitative study. Methods: Using yarning methods, Indigenous patients (n = 13) and support persons (n = 3) were interviewed by an Aboriginal researcher during April‐July, 2020. Thematic analysis was used to identify common themes using an inductive approach. Results: Six themes emerged. (1) Experience of diagnosis. This theme included stories of delays in the system, self‐awareness of signs and symptoms and relief of being diagnosed. (2) 'Shame, shame, shame'. Experiences of prejudices and discrimination from health professionals, the lack of understanding of cirrhosis among health professionals, and stories about alcohol cessation and counselling around alcohol cessation. (3) Health literacy. Participants' understanding of cirrhosis was variable. While the importance of knowledge was recognised, 'what works for someone might not work for others'. Several patients partnered with their support persons and clinicians to bridge the health literacy gap. (4) Sources of support included family and friends, transport facilities, health professionals and peers. (5) Positive and negative aspects of communication and patient consultation were discussed. (6) Psychosocial counselling to 'look after the caring side'. The need for more mental health care services was raised. Conclusion: Barriers related to poor health literacy, stigma and lack of practical and emotional support, and issues with communication and patient consultation, may lead to inequitable access to cirrhosis care and treatment for Indigenous Australians. Relevance to clinical practice: Gaining knowledge of the experiences of Indigenous Australians with cirrhosis is important for providing patient‐centred and culturally appropriate care. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire to measure their knowledge and attitude regarding sunscreen use. Results were analyzed using a chi-square test.Results: Most participants heard about sunscreen (93.4%) and had indicated previous sunscreen use (72%). Sunscreen use was higher among women and participants with a postgraduate education. Sunscreen knowledge was higher among women, participants with non-photosensitive disorders, and participants with Fitzpatrick I, II, and III skin types. A total of 80% knew the worst time for sun exposure, but only 20.5% of the participants knew that sunscreen should be applied daily throughout the year, and 13.5% knew the correct minimum recommended SPF. A total of 34% were aware of the minimum time allowed for sunscreen application before sun exposure, and 20% were aware of the longest period allowed between reapplications. Only 4.5% knew the proper amount of sunscreen to cover the entire body.Conclusion: Our study revealed that most participants had heard of sunscreen, however their knowledge of the guidelines for sunscreen use was poor. Only 33% of the participants had received a recommendation for using sunscreen from their general practitioner or dermatologist. Background: Oncology patients have had to make many changes to minimise their exposure to COVID-19, causing stress. Despite education, some patients still do not recognise potential COVID symptoms. Aims: We assessed patient knowledge of COVID, and its impact on their behaviours, concerns, and healthcare experience. Methods: A 16-page questionnaire was distributed to 120 oncology patients attending the day unit of a tertiary Irish cancer centre for systemic anti-cancer therapy (May/June 2020). The Irish 7-day COVID incidence during this period ranged from 2 to 11 cases/100,000 people. Results: One hundred and one responses were received, 1% had tested positive for COVID, and 31% had undergone testing. Participant insight into their knowledge about COVID and their own behaviour was limited in some cases. Seventy-five percent reported total compliance with restrictions, but many were not fully compliant. Self-reported confidence in knowledge was high, but did not predict demonstrated knowledge. Sixty percent did not recognise two or more symptoms; 40% did not self-identify as high-risk. Patients reported more health-related worry (72%), loneliness (51%), and lower mood (42%) since the pandemic began. Financial toxicity worsened, with increased financial worry (78%), reductions in household income (40%), and increased costs due to lockdown (62%). Use of facemasks introduced new communications barriers for 67% of those with hearing loss. Conclusions: Despite self-reported confidence in knowledge, some patient's recognition of COVID symptoms and the preventative strategies they should use are not optimal, highlighting the need for further education in this regard. As precision medicine approaches are implemented, cancer treatment decisions have come to require comprehension of genetic tests and their role in risk stratification and treatment options. Acceptance and implementation of precision medicine requires patient understanding of numeracy, genetic literacy, health literacy, and medical trust. Implementing precision medicine in a US federally qualified community health center (FQCHC) setting has received little attention. Using a mixed-methods approach, we sought to identify patient-level factors influencing the understanding of cancer risk and precision medicine among FQCHC patients. We enrolled 26 English-speaking adults aged 40–79 years. Participants enrolled in focus groups and completed surveys to assess patient-level understanding of precision medicine, numeracy, and health literacy. The majority of participants were female (77%) and self-identified as African American (89%). Approximately one-third reported having a high school degree or less. While health literacy was generally high, 42% felt that genes or genetics had little impact on health and most (69%) reported little familiarity with precision medicine. Many participants reported that trust in their providers was extremely or very important when receiving genetic tests. Numeracy levels were moderate, with nearly half reporting some discomfort working with fractions and 38% finding numerical information only occasionally useful. Findings suggest that patients may lack familiarity with precision medicine concepts relevant for understanding cancer treatment decisions. Future educational efforts may help bridge the gap in patient understanding and facilitate equitable opportunities for precision medicine for all patients, including those seeking care from community health centers. Background/Hypothesis: Risk factor control of diabetes mellitus (DM) and especially dyslipidemia remains unsatisfactory in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). We aimed to analyze the knowledge of low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) treatment goals, subjective level of information, and information needs in very high‐risk patients with ASCVD. Methods: ASCVD patients (n = 210; 75 ± 9 years; 71.4% male; 89.5% coronary disease) with DM (96.7% type 2) completed a questionnaire assessing knowledge of HbA1c and LDL‐C treatment goals and subjective level of information and information needs on disease‐related topics of DM and ASCVD. Serum LDL‐C and HbA1c were measured. Results: HbA1c goal (<7.0% in 60.6%) was attained more frequently than LDL‐C goal (<70 mg/dl in 39.9%; p <.01). Significantly more participants named the correct goal for HbA1c compared to LDL‐C (52.9% vs. 2.4%; p <.01). Subjective levels of information were higher and information needs were lower for DM than for ASCVD (p <.01 for all topics). No associations of knowledge of treatment goals and level of information with the attainment of treatment goals for HbA1c and LDL‐C were found. However, in multivariate regression, higher levels of education were associated with knowledge of treatment goals (HbA1c: odds ratio [OR] 1.32, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01–1.72, p =.04; LDL‐C: OR 2.32, 95% CI 1.07–5.03; p =.03). Conclusion: In very high‐risk patients with ASCVD, a deficit of knowledge of treatment goals to control dyslipidemia exists when compared to DM, patients felt significantly better informed for topics of DM than for ASCVD and display higher information needs for topics of ASCVD. Abstract Background Optimal management of cirrhosis is complex, and patients often lack knowledge and skills, which can affect self-management. We assessed patient knowledge about cirrhosis and examined whether knowledge was associated with clinical outcomes, healthcare service use, and healthcare costs. A cross-sectional ‘knowledge survey’ was conducted during 2018–2020. We assessed patient knowledge about cirrhosis and explore whether knowledge was associated with clinical outcomes, healthcare service use, and costs. Methods Patients with cirrhosis (n = 123) completed a ‘knowledge survey’. We calculated the proportion of correct answers to eight questions deemed to be “key knowledge” about cirrhosis by an expert panel, and dichotomized patients as ‘good knowledge’/‘poor knowledge’. Clinical data, healthcare costs, and health-related quality of life (SF-36) were available. Results 58.5% of patients had ‘good knowledge’ about cirrhosis. Higher education level was associated with higher odds of having ‘good knowledge’ about cirrhosis (adjusted-OR = 5.55, 95%CI 2.40–12.84). Compared to patients with ‘poor knowledge’, those with ‘good knowledge’ had a higher health status in the SF-36 physical functioning domain (p = 0.011), fewer cirrhosis-related admissions (adjusted incidence rate ratio [IRR] = 0.59, 95%CI 0.35–0.99) and emergency presentations (adj-IRR = 0.34, 95%CI 0.16–0.72), and more planned 1-day cirrhosis admissions (adj-IRR = 3.96, 95%CI 1.46–10.74). The total cost of cirrhosis admissions was lower for patients with ‘good knowledge’ (adj-IRR = 0.30, 95%CI 0.29–0.30). Conclusion Poor disease knowledge is associated with increased use and total cost of healthcare services. Targeted educational interventions to improve patient knowledge may be an effective strategy to promote a more cost-effective use of healthcare services.

Background: Pediatric asthma is the most common chronic respiratory disease of childhood. Caregivers often report lacking knowledge in several aspects of asthma management at home. Although the use of mobile health (mHealth) tools, such as mobile apps, could facilitate asthma self-management and, simultaneously, the collection of data for research, few studies have explored the features that caregivers would like to see in such a tool and their perceptions on data sharing. Objective: This study evaluates caregivers' perceived knowledge gaps in asthma management; their perceptions of certain features and resources that should be included in a potential mobile app; and any concerns that they may have regarding data sharing for research, including privacy and security concerns. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we surveyed 200 caregivers of children (aged 1-13 y) with asthma who were followed at a pediatric tertiary care center in Montreal, Canada. Anonymous data were collected through the institutional web-based survey platform. We collected the participants' answers by using a 5-category Likert scale ("completely agree," "agree," "neither agree nor disagree," "disagree," and "completely disagree"), multiple-choice questions, and free-text questions on the abovementioned topics. Descriptive statistics were performed, and answers were compared between caregivers of preschoolaged children and caregivers of school-aged children. Results: Participating children's mean age was 5.9 (SD 3.4) years, with 54% (108/200) aged =5 years and 46% (92/200) aged >6 years. Overall, caregivers reported having adequate knowledge about asthma and asthma self-management. Nonetheless, they identified several desirable features for a mobile app focused on asthma self-management. The most frequently identified features included receiving alerts about environmental triggers of asthma (153/199, 76.9%), having videos that demonstrate symptoms of asthma (133/199, 66.8%), and being able to log children's asthma action plans in the app (133/199, 66.8%). Interestingly, more caregivers of preschool-aged children preferred textual information when compared to caregivers of school-aged children (textual information for explaining asthma: P=.008; textual information for the symptoms of asthma: P=.005). Caregivers were generally highly in favor of sharing data collected through a mobile app for research. Conclusions: Caregivers of children with asthma in our study identified several desirable educational and interactive features that they wanted to have in a mobile app for asthma self-management. A lack in patient knowledge of warfarin therapy is associated with poor adherence. This knowledge gap may result in a lower INR Time in Therapeutic Range (TTR). To investigate association between patient anticoagulation knowledge and warfarin control. Michigan Anticoagulation Quality Improvement Initiative (MAQI2) is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan sponsored consortium of six anticoagulation management services. Patients prescribed warfarin at two MAQI2 sites completed a voluntary Oral Anticoagulation Knowledge (OAK) questionnaire at warfarin initiation and 6-month follow-up. The results of 20 OAK questions and TTRs (excluding 1st month post-initiation) were compared using chi-square tests, t-tests and multivariate analysis adjusting for SAMe-TT2R2 and days on warfarin. Of 1836 surveys distributed at warfarin initiation, 481 (26.2%) patients completed the baseline questionnaire (within 1 month post-initiation): mean OAK score: 14.6 ± 3.4. Of those, 147 (30.6%) completed 6-month follow-up surveys (OAK: 12.7 ± 5.8). Patients with TTR ≥ 70% at baseline scored higher on OAK tests than patients with TTR < 70% in unadjusted analyses (15.1 ± 3.2 v. 14.2 ± 3.5, p = 0.003) and adjusted analysis (p = 0.020). There was no unadjusted or adjusted difference in OAK scores at 6-month follow-up between patients with TTR ≥ 70% and TTR < 70%. For patients who completed baseline and follow-up surveys, there was a decrease of 2.4 points in OAK score between baseline and 6-month follow up (p < 0.001). Higher baseline, but not follow-up, OAK score is associated with better warfarin control and average OAK scores decreased between baseline and follow-up. Objectives: Despite increasing emphasis on the inclusion of patient input in health technology assessment (HTA) in Europe in particular, questions remain as to the integration of patient insight alongside other HTA inputs. This paper aims to explore how HTA processes, while ensuring the scientific quality of assessments,“make do”with patient knowledge elicited through patients’ involvement mechanisms. Methods: The qualitative study analyzed institutional HTA and patient involvement in four European country contexts. We combined documentary analysis with interviews with HTA professionals, patient organizations, and health technology industry representatives, complemented with observational findings made during a research stay at an HTA agency. Results: We present three vignettes which showcase how different parameters of assessment become reframed upon the positioning of patient knowledge alongside other forms of evidence and expertise. Each vignette explores patients’ involvement during an assessment of a different type of technology and at a different stage of the HTA process. First, cost-effectiveness considerations were reframed during an appraisal of a rare disease medicine based on patient and clinician input regarding its treatment pathway; in the second vignette reframing amounted to what counts as a meaningful outcome measure for a glucose monitoring device; in the third, evaluating pediatric transplantation services involved reframing an option’s appropriateness from a question of moral to one of legal acceptability. Conclusions: Making do with patient knowledge in HTA involves reframing of what is being assessed. Conceptualizing patients’ involvement in this way helps us to consider the inclusion of patient knowledge not as complementary to, but as something that can transform the assessment process. Background: Women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) do not undergo breast and cervical cancer screening at the same rate as women without IDD. IDDs are diagnosed in childhood, are lifelong, and involve difficulties in adaptive behaviors and intellectual functioning. Native American women also experience disparities in breast and cervical cancer screenings. Despite known disparities, women with IDD are often not included in health promotion programs, and there is a need for evidence-based programming for those with intersectional identities, such as Native American women with IDD. Objective: This study aims to assess the feasibility and acceptability of My Health My Choice (MHMC), an adaptation of the Women Be Healthy 2 program. There are 2 parts to the study: adaptation of the Women Be Healthy 2 program and feasibility and acceptability testing of MHMC. Methods: Individuals aged over 18 years who identify as Native American females with IDD and their caregivers (N=30 women-caregiver dyads) are eligible for the study. Participants, who are affiliated with 2 partnering sites in Arizona (1 rural and 1 urban), complete pre- and postsurveys assessing knowledge, self-efficacy, and screening expectations before and immediately after completing the program. In addition, all participants complete brief satisfaction surveys after each of the 6 educational sessions. A subsample of Native American women with an IDD (n=12), caregivers (n=12), and community health educators (n=2) who participate in the MHMC program will provide semistructured qualitative input regarding the content, delivery, and cultural relevance of the program. Results: The adaptation of the culturally responsive MHMC program was completed in August 2021. In November 2021, the project team began recruitment for feasibility and acceptability studies. Feasibility will be examined using participation metrics, and acceptability will be measured using satisfaction measures. Pre- and postmeasures in cancer screening knowledge, self-efficacy, and screening expectations will examine improvements among participants. Conclusions: The results of feasibility and acceptability testing of MHMC will guide future implementation studies of the program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Background This study aimed to collect data regarding patient perception and knowledge of dental implants. It was conducted with the hope that the data would provide dental professionals and policymakers with a better understanding of ways to promote implant therapy. Methods An anonymous online survey with 10 questions was distributed through 12 dental offices in Tokyo and provincial cities in Japan to assess patient perception and knowledge of dental implants. Harvard Medical School’s IRB approved this study. Results We collected data from 1172 patients (59% female, 41% male). The most common perceptions of implant therapy were that it was “expensive,” “advanced,” and “scary”. Patients’ implant knowledge came primarily from magazines or books, while professional dental societies/associations were the least sought out source of information. Patients believed that the purpose of dental implants was to avoid dentures and improve chewing function. Their primary concerns about dental implants were the cost and longevity. Approximately 12% of patients with dental implants and 61% of patients without implants did not know that bone grafts may be required and that sedation during surgery was an option. For patients who experienced sedation during the procedure, 60% of them want it for future surgeries. Patients also had limited knowledge of bone-graft materials and the effects of CBCT radiation; 75% of the patients expressed concerns over the safety of graft materials and radiation exposure. For patients with a history of dental implant therapy, 80% of them would recommend dental implants to their family and friends. Conclusions Overall, patients’ experiences with dental implant therapy were positive, but there was a lack of patient education regarding dental implants and their associated procedures. Dental professionals need to take the initiative to improve patient education.

Introduction: History is an important component of emergency department risk stratification for chest pain patients. We hypothesized that a significant portion of patients would not be able to accurately report their history of coronary artery disease (CAD) and diagnostic testing. Methods: We prospectively enrolled a convenience sample of a cohort of adult ED patients with a chief complaint of chest pain. They completed a structured survey that included questions regarding prior testing for CAD and cardiac history. Study authors performed a structured chart review within the electronic medical record for our 6-hospital system. Results of testing for CAD, cardiac interventions, and chart diagnoses of CAD/acute myocardial infarction (AMI) were recorded. Abstract Background Clinical trials are an essential source for advances in oncologic care, yet the enrollment rate is only 2-4%. Patients' reluctance to participate is an important barrier. This study evaluates patients' level of understanding and attitudes towards clinical trials. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted in the oncology department and day care unit at the oncology division Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center, Israel. From January 2015 to September 2016. Two-hundred patients’ currently receiving active anti-cancer therapy at a large tertiary hospital completed an anonymous questionnaire comprised of demographic information, past experience in clinical research and basic knowledge on clinical trials. Results The majority of respondents did not meet the minimum knowledge level criteria. In those who replied they would decline to participate in a clinical trial, concern were related to potential assignment to the placebo arm, provision of informed consent and trust issues with their oncologist. Those with sufficient knowledge were significantly more interested in participating. Patients with past experience in clinical trials had a higher level of academic education, were less religious, had a better understanding of medical research and were inclined to participate in future research. Conclusions Misperceptions of clinical trials may contribute substantially to the unwillingness to participate in them.

BackgroundNon-adherence to hemodialysis (HD) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. In this cross-sectional study, we compared correlates and rates of non-adherence between the US and Japan to determine if differences in patient knowledge about HD might account for international variation in adherence.MethodsWe evaluated 100 US and 116 Japanese patients on maintenance HD. Patient knowledge was scored based on the identification of their vascular access, dry weight, cause of kidney disease, and ≥ 3 phosphorus- and potassium-rich foods. Patients were considered non-adherent if they missed > 3% of HD sessions in 3 months.Results23% of the US and none of the Japanese patients were non-adherent. Using logistic regression, we found that in the US non-adherence was more common in black patients [Odds ratio (OR) 3.98; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.42-11.22], while high school graduates (OR 0.20; 95% CI 0.05-0.81) and those on the transplant waiting list (OR 0.25; 95% CI 0.083-0.72) were less likely to miss their treatments. Abstract Background Prior studies have assessed provider knowledge and factors associated with opioid misuse; similar studies evaluating patient knowledge are lacking. The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of understanding regarding opioid use in orthopaedic trauma patients. We also sought to determine the demographic factors and clinical and personal experiences associated with level of understanding. Methods One hundred and sixty-six adult orthopaedic trauma surgery patients across two clinical sites of an academic institution participated in an internet-based survey (2352 invited, 7.1% response rate). Demographic, clinical, and personal experience variables, as well as perceptions surrounding opioid use were collected. Relationships between patient characteristics and opioid perceptions were identified using univariate and multivariable logistic regressions. Alpha = 0.05.
