JOURNALS: Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences ,Online Journal of Health and Allied Sciences - Abstract
Background and Aims: In spite abortion has been legalized in India over three decades, unsafe abortion continues to be a significant contributor of maternal mortality and morbidity. The aim of the present study is to assess the magnitude of septic abortion in a tertiary care hospital over a period of three years with a special emphasis on maternal mortality and morbidity and various surgical complications. Settings and Design: Retrospective study of patients who were admitted with unsafe abortions over a three year period from 2005 to 2008 in a tertiary teaching Hospital of Rural India. Materials and Methods: Hospital records of the patients who were admitted with unsafe abortion in three years (2005-2008) were reviewed to evaluate the demographic and clinical profile in relation to age, parity, marital status, indication of abortion , the methods of abortion ,qualification of abortion provider complications and maternal mortality. Results: Unsafe abortion constitutes 11.6% ( n=132) of total abortion cases admitted over 3 years. Majority of women (70.45%) were in their thirties, married (89%).Sixty percent wanted abortion for birth spacing. Abortion methods included various primitive methods (30%) but majority by dilatation and evacuation. About 60% of abortionists were unqualified. Majority of women admitted with serious complications like peritonitis (70%), visceral injuries (60%), hemorrhagic and septic shock, renal failure (17.4%), and life threatening conditions like DIC, hepatic failure and encephalopathy. A total of 231 women died of unsafe abortion making it 12.55% of total maternal mortality in our institution. Out of 73 women requiring laparotomy, 22% were done within 24 hours of admission and majority (49%) were performed beyond 24-48 hours. Interestingly no women died when early aggressive surgery was done. Conclusion: The present study confirms that unsafe abortion is a great neglected health care problem leading to a considerable loss of maternal lives. Education and accessibility of contra caption, readily available, quality abortion services by trained abortion providers remain the key to limit mortality and morbidity arising from unsafe abortion.

Background: Following the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a new entity emerged termed as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and adolescents temporally related to COVID-19 (MISC) by the World Health Organization (WHO). Infection with COVID-19 triggers the formation of antibodies to viral surface epitopes. It is believed that low titer non-neutralizing antibodies may accentuate virus-triggered immune responses. The study aimed to describe the various clinical presenting features, deranged laboratory parameters, echocardiographic findings, and immediate outcome and to categorize into 3 types of MISC and find any difference among the 3 types. Methodology: Children 29-days old to 12-years old who clinically satisfied the published WHO’s case definition for MISC were included in the study. All children were subjected to serological testing for total immunoglobulin to viral spike glycoprotein, relevant blood investigations, and echocardiography. Results: Out of 50 cases, we had 24(48%) cases of MISC without shock, 12(24%) cases of Kawasaki disease-like phenotype, and 14(28%) cases of MISC with shock. Fever (96%) and respiratory complaints (64%) predominate followed by gastrointestinal (45%) and red eye (32%). The inflammatory markers were notably elevated- the median CRP was 39.6mg/L, median ESR was 70mm 1sthr, median procalcitonin was 8.2 ng/ml. There is a significant drop in inflammatory markers post-treatment (p=0.019, p=0.000, p=0.016 respectively for CRP, ESR and procalcitonin). Abnormal echocardiographic findings were seen in 46% of cases in terms of decreased ejection fraction and coronary artery aneurysms (CAA). There were 7 deaths (14%), and 42(84%) patients were successfully discharged. Conclusion: Following the COVID-19 pandemic, MISC has emerged with its characteristic clinical pattern which needs early identification and prompt treatment to prevent mortality and morbidity.

High Energy Physics - Experiment - Abstract
Using 980 $fb^-1$ of data collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider, we report a study of the electromagnetic decays of excited {charmed baryons} $\Xi_c(2790)$ and $\Xi_c(2815)$. A clear signal (8.6 standard deviations) is observed for $\Xi_c(2815)^0 \to \Xi_c^0\gamma$, and we measure: $B[\Xi_c(2815)^0 \to \Xi_c^0\gamma]/B[\Xi_c(2815)^0 \to \Xi_c(2645)^+\pi^- \to \Xi_c^0\pi^+\pi^-] = 0.41 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.03$. We also present evidence (3.8 standard deviations) for the similar decay of the $\Xi_c(2790)^0$ and measure: $B[\Xi_c(2790)^{0}\to\Xi_c^{0}\gamma]/B[\Xi_c(2790)^0\to\Xi_c^{\prime +}\pi^{-}\to\Xi_c^{+}\gamma \pi^-] = 0.13 \pm 0.03 \pm 0.02$. The first quoted uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. We find no hint of the analogous decays of the $\Xi_c(2815)^+$ and $\Xi_c(2790)^+$ baryons and set upper limits at the 90% confidence level of: $B[\Xi_c(2815)^{+}\to\Xi_c^{+}\gamma]/B[\Xi_c(2815)^+\to\Xi_c(2645)^0\pi^+\to\Xi_c^+\pi^-\pi^+] < 0.09,$ and $B[\Xi_c(2790)^{+}\to\Xi_c^{+}\gamma]/B[\Xi_c(2790)^+\to\Xi_c^{\prime 0}\pi^{+}\to\Xi_c^{0}\gamma \pi^+] < 0.06.$ Approximate values of the partial widths of the decays are extracted, which can be used to discriminate between models of the underlying quark structure of these excited states., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Radiomic features are being increasingly studied for clinical applications. We aimed to assess the agreement among radiomic features when computed by several groups by using different software packages under very tightly controlled conditions, which included standardized feature definitions and common image data sets. Ten sites (9 from the NCI's Quantitative Imaging Network] positron emission tomography-computed tomography working group plus one site from outside that group) participated in this project. Nine common quantitative imaging features were selected for comparison including features that describe morphology, intensity, shape, and texture. The common image data sets were: three 3D digital reference objects (DROs) and 10 patient image scans from the Lung Image Database Consortium data set using a specific lesion in each scan. Each object (DRO or lesion) was accompanied by an already-defined volume of interest, from which the features were calculated. Feature values for each object (DRO or lesion) were reported. The coefficient of variation (CV), expressed as a percentage, was calculated across software packages for each feature on each object. Thirteen sets of results were obtained for the DROs and patient data sets. Five of the 9 features showed excellent agreement with CV < 1%; 1 feature had moderate agreement (CV < 10%), and 3 features had larger variations (CV ≥ 10%) even after attempts at harmonization of feature calculations. This work highlights the value of feature definition standardization as well as the need to further clarify definitions for some features.

Condensed Matter - Materials Science - Abstract
We investigated the perpendicular exchange bias (PEB) switching from negative- to positive-exchange bias state for Cr2O3/Pt/Co exchange coupling thin film system exhibiting positive exchange bias phenomena. By changing Pt spacer layer thickness or measurements temperature, we demonstrated the control of two kind of intermediate state of the switching; the double hysteresis loop indicating local, non-averaged PEB, and single hysteresis loop indicating averaged PEB. We proposed the way to control the lateral ferromagnetic domain though the control of PEB magnitude.

In this paper, minimization of delamination effect on laminated composite plates using smart (piezoelectric and magnetostrictive) materials has been investigated. The static and dynamic responses of the smart composite plates with/without delamination have been obtained using the finite element method. The validation and comparison studies of the laminated composite plate have also been performed to show the level of accuracy of the presently adopted model by solving a few examples related to static and frequency cases. For control and minimization of delamination effect, smart materials have been introduced at the various layers of the laminated panel. Further, the influence of delamination size, location, orientation scheme, aspect ratio, modular ratio and different boundary conditions on the dynamic response of the smart delaminated composite plate has been analyzed. Finally, optimization study has been carried out to find the optimal value of these parameters by minimizing the difference between the frequency responses. Here, two optimization algorithms TLBO and PSO have been considered to carry out the optimization study and results obtained from both techniques are validated and compared. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pathogenesis of disease progression in drug-refractory epilepsy is poorly understood. We report the case of a young woman with a four-year history of epilepsy that progressed rapidly as evidenced by the development of progressive focal cortical atrophy. She underwent biopsy that showed perinatal ischemia and a prominent inflammatory response, including T-cell infiltration and microglial activation. There was no consensus reached on the final diagnosis although the hypothesis of dual pathology (adult variant of Rasmussen's encephalitis and perinatal stroke) was considered. The possible role of inflammation in the progression of epilepsy caused by a "static" lesion (perinatal stroke) is discussed.

We present a theory of non-equilibrium long range charge transfer between donor and acceptor centers in a model polymer mediated by magnetic exciton (Kondo) bound states. Our model produces electron tunneling lengths easily exceeding 10$\AA$, as observed recently in DNA and organic charge transfer systems. This long ranged tunneling is effective for weak to intermediate donor-bridge coupling, and is enhanced both by weak to intermediate strength Coulomb hole-electron attraction (through the orthogonality catastrophe) and by coupling to local vibrational modes., Comment: Revised content (broadened scope, vibrations added), submitted to Phys Rev Lett, added author

Let G be a graph on n vertices and A(G), L(G), and |L|(G) be the adjacency matrix, Laplacian matrix and signless Laplacian matrix of G, respectively. The paper is essentially a survey of known results about the spectra of the adjacency, Laplacian and signless Laplacian matrix of graphs resulting from various graph operations with special emphasis on corona and graph products. In most cases, we have described the eigenvalues of the resulting graphs along with an explicit description of the structure of the corresponding eigenvectors.

Condensed Matter - Abstract
The symmetrized density matrix renormalization group approach is applied within the extended Hubbard-Peierls model (with parameters U/t, V/t, and bond alternation \delta) to study the ordering of the lowest one-photon (1^{1}B^{-}_u) and two-photon (2^{1}A^{+}_g) states in one- dimensional conjugated systems with chain lengths, N, up to N=80 sites. Three different types of crossovers are studied, as a function of U/t, \delta, and N. The U-crossover emphasizes the larger ionic character of the 2A_g state compared to the lowest triplet excitation. The \delta crossover shows strong dependence on both N and U/t. The N-crossover illustrates the more localized nature of the 2A_g excitation relative to the 1B_u excitation at intermediate correlation strengths., Comment: Latex file; figures available upon request. - Abstract
IMPORTANCE The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 (GBD 2019) provided systematic estimates of incidence, morbidity, and mortality to inform local and international efforts toward reducing cancer burden. OBJECTIVE To estimate cancer burden and trends globally for 204 countries and territories and by Sociodemographic Index (SDI) quintiles from 2010 to 2019. EVIDENCE REVIEW The GBD 2019 estimation methods were used to describe cancer incidence, mortality, years lived with disability, years of life lost, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) in 2019 and over the past decade. Estimates are also provided by quintiles of the SDI, a composite measure of educational attainment, income per capita, and total fertility rate for those younger than 25 years. Estimates include 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). FINDINGS In 2019, there were an estimated 23.6 million (95% UI, 22.2-24.9 million) new cancer cases (17.2 million when excluding nonmelanoma skin cancer) and 10.0 million (95% UI, 9.36-10.6 million) cancer deaths globally, with an estimated 250 million (235-264 million) DALYs due to cancer. Since 2010, these represented a 26.3% (95% UI, 20.3%-32.3%) increase in new cases, a 20.9% (95% UI, 14.2%-27.6%) increase in deaths, and a 16.0% (95% UI, 9.3%-22.8%) increase in DALYs. Among 22 groups of diseases and injuries in the GBD 2019 study, cancer was second only to cardiovascular diseases for the number of deaths, years of life lost, and DALYs globally in 2019. Cancer burden differed across SDI quintiles. The proportion of years lived with disability that contributed to DALYs increased with SDI, ranging from 1.4% (1.1%-1.8%) in the low SDI quintile to 5.7% (4.2%-7.1%) in the high SDI quintile. While the high SDI quintile had the highest number of new cases in 2019, the middle SDI quintile had the highest number of cancer deaths and DALYs. From 2010 to 2019, the largest percentage increase in the numbers of cases and deaths occurred in the low and
