Dr. Janda put forth an interesting concept by dividing the muscles into two groups: Postural and Phasic. Postural or tonic muscles are important for maintaining upright posture, have tendency to become tight and hypertonic. Phasic muscles, which include almost all other muscles have tendency to become weak and hypotonic. Muscular imbalances can have certain consequences in the body1. Janda classifies these muscular imbalance patterns into three types including Upper Cross Syndrome, Lower Cross Syndrome, and layered syndrome. Different movement can cause upper cross syndrome, but most cases develop through poor posture. Pregnancy involves postural changes in both upper as well lower body. So due to anatomical changes occurring for such long period of time can lead to development of both upper cross and lower cross which when simultaneously found is termed as Layered Syndrome.
