Abstract

The increased adoption of mobile devices and social networking is drastically changing the way people monitor and share knowledge about their environment. Here, information and communication technologies (ICT) offer significant new ways to support social activism in cities by providing residents with new digital tools to articulate projects and mobilize activities. However, the development of ICT for activism is still in its infancy, with activists using basic tools stitched together in an ad hoc manner for their needs. Still, Internet-based technologies and related software architectures feature various enablers for civic action beyond base social networking. To that end, this paper discusses the vision and initial details of AppCivist, a platform that builds on cross-domain research among social scientists and computer scientists to revisit service-oriented architecture and relevant services to further social activism. We discuss the ICT challenges inherent in this project and present our recent work to address them.

19. SPACE-TA: cost-effective task allocation exploiting intradata and interdata correlations in sparse crowdsensing

Abstract

Data quality and budget are two primary concerns in urban-scale mobile crowdsensing. Traditional research on mobile crowdsensing mainly takes sensing coverage ratio as the data quality metric rather than the overall sensed data error in the target-sensing area. In this article, we propose to leverage spatiotemporal correlations among the sensed data in the target-sensing area to significantly reduce the number of sensing task assignments. In particular, we exploit both intradata correlations within the same type of sensed data and interdata correlations among different types of sensed data in the sensing task. We propose a novel crowdsensing task allocation framework called SPACE-TA (SPArse Cost-Effective Task Allocation), combining compressive sensing, statistical analysis, active learning, and transfer learning, to dynamically select a small set of subareas for sensing in each timeslot (cycle), while inferring the data of unsensed subareas under a probabilistic data quality guarantee. Evaluations on real-life temperature, humidity, air quality, and traffic monitoring datasets verify the effectiveness of SPACE-TA. In the temperature- monitoring task leveraging intradata correlations, SPACE-TA requires data from only 15.5% of the subareas while keeping the inference error below 0.25°C in 95% of the cycles, reducing the number of sensed subareas by 18.0% to 26.5% compared to baselines. When multiple tasks run simultaneously, for example, for temperature and humidity monitoring, SPACE-TA can further reduce ∼10% of the sensed subareas by exploiting interdata correlations.

International audience; Transport in Senegal is chaotic and large, especially in main cities. Additionally, although most people have mobile phones, large part of them still rely on SMS. Considering this, we propose the development of an application platform for large-scale transport information management relying on ‘mobile social crowd-sensing’. To support this platform, we model a large-scale mobile publish/subscribe system using queuing theory. We develop MobileJINQS simulator that uses D4D data for parameterization.

Abstract

International audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) is characterized by a wide penetration in the regular user's life through an increasing number of mobile Things, such as mobile phones hosting sensors and actuators. However, the shift to the mobile IoT does not come without challenges, as many already existing issues remain unresolved and are amplified by the IoT scale and the mobility of its Things. The most challenging issues are handling the abundance of users and Things, providing interoperability across the heterogeneous Things, and overcoming the unknown dynamic environment due to the mobility of Things. This paper addresses the above challenges as we revisit the commonly used Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). This leads to the design, implementation and evaluation of MobIoT, a new service-oriented middleware. MobIoT modifies standard SOA functionalities, namely service discovery, composition and access, to better address the challenges posed by the IoT, especially its scale. Specifically, MobIoT adopts probabilistic methods to decrease the number of involved devices, while building on semantic knowledge to support interoperability and fulfill users' queries for Thing-based measurements/actions.

Abstract

International audience; Resilient computing is defined as the ability of a system to remain dependable when facing changes. To mitigate faults at runtime, dependable systems employ fault tolerance mechanisms such as replication techniques. These mechanisms have to be systematically and rigorously applied in order to guarantee the conformance between the application runtime behavior and its dependability requirements. To this end, we propose architectural concepts for developing resilient computing systems using component-based middleware. The development process of adaptive fault tolerance (AFT) is shortly presented. We then illustrate the benefits of AFT on a Wireless Sensor Network-based application for parking management.

26. Response of different wheat varieties towards Azospirillum and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) seed inoculation

Abstract

Present investigation was undertaken to utilize Azospirillum and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) to avail atmospheric nitrogen and soluble phosphate in soil for the wheat crop. The sonalika variety (V1) responded best towards seed inoculation by Azospirillum and Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) for the character speed of germination which is regarded as very important indicator of seed vigour. Germination percentage for untreated control was 86.6% after one month of storage and found to be reduced to 76.67% after three month of storage but for treated Azospirillum in case of sonalika it was retained at 83.33%. V1T1, V2T1 and V3T1 recorded improved germination even after six month of storage. The seedling characters like shoot and root length was greatly improved with T1 and T2 for almost the varieties included in this programme. The character vigour index greatly enhanced in case of V1T1, V1T2, V3T1 and V3T2 after one month and six months of storage. This work reported utilization of Azospirillum and PSB as seed inoculation for wheat varieties to enhance seed storability and seedling growth parameter. It can be concluded that, Azospirillum and PSB seed inoculation can be recommended for wheat for better seedling growth storability of seed.

Abstract

This document describes the final implementation and the evaluation of the CHOReOS middleware. Evaluation is achieved both via the use of the middleware on CHOReOS use-cases and via synthetic experiments and simulation. The conclusion was that the implementation of the CHOReOS middleware has achieved a good level of maturity for an open source project and it is ready to be used in real-world, complex choreographies.

Abstract

The core objective of WP6 is to evaluate the CONNECT technologies under realistic situations. To achieve this goal, WP6 concentrated a significant amount of its 4th year effort on the finalization of the implementation of the GMES scenario defined during the 3rd year. The GMES scenario allows the consortium to assess the validity of CONNECT claims and to investigate the exploitation of CONNECT technologies to deal with the integration of real systems. In particular, GMES requires the connection of highly heterogeneous and independently built systems provided by the industry partners. WP6 contributed also in providing mobile collaborative applications and case studies showing the exploitation of CONNECTORs on mobile devices.

Abstract

International audience; The Internet of Things (IoT) domain can be considered to be an amalgamation of the hitherto well- researched Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSAN) and Pervasive Computing domains. However, application development on this platform still remains challenging. In this paper, we first discuss a specific real world instance of an oft- cited IoT application: the Smart Home application, and gain insight into IoT application development by actually implementing it. Based on the above, we then present the design, development and deployment techniques for a real world IoT system from ground up and describe of various interaction patterns that naturally occur in such applications. We further discuss the challenges faced while reusing and combining approaches from the existing domains of WSANs and Pervasive Computing, into the domain of IoT. Finally, we conclude by using these insights to present a roadmap for designing an application development framework for IoT.

Abstract

The proposed assessment spans: (i) the project's overall objective of enabling on-the-fly interoperability among heterogeneous networked systems as well as (ii) the project's specific objectives related to the foundations and associated enablers to be elaborated for learning and reasoning about the interaction behaviours of networked systems and for synthesizing mediators so as to make systems interoperate.

Abstract

The goal of this document is to elucidate the requirements that the various actors involved with future Internet choreographies will have from the CHOReOS Integrated Development and Runtime Environment (IDRE). Since the IDRE integrates the work performed in the work packages WP 2 - 4, the aforementioned requirements lead to the specification of requirements for WP 2 - 4, specifically those requirements which will govern how they will integrate with each other. We base our work on the conceptual model of CHOReOS defined in D1.2, and first present the main concepts used while discussing the IDRE, including the actors and use cases. This is followed by an exhaustive list of requirements pertaining to each functionality that the IDRE will provide with regard to design, development and deployment of choreographies.

Abstract

International audience; The explosion in the instrumentation of our environment is driving the need for developing sensor networks that not only observe and measure but that also show a high-level of fault tolerance. Towards this goal, we identify faults and key challenges related to the development and deployment of self-managing dependable sensor networks, on the account of two use cases: a monitoring system and a geo-localization application. We then cater requirements and envisage the design of a fault injector which deliberately injects software faults into an operational sensor network to determine if the target offers an effective response, and hence evaluate the dependability of the network. Taking into account the distributed nature of sensor networks and their inherently unsafe (wireless) communication medium, we then insert in a distributed manner communication-related faults and monitor the network under study in order to detect and diagnose any resulting error.

Abstract

Interoperability remains a fundamental challenge when connecting heterogeneous systems which encounter and spontaneously communicate with one another in pervasive computing environments. This challenge is exasperated by the highly heterogeneous technologies employed by each of the interacting parties, i.e., in terms of hardware, operating system, middleware protocols, and application protocols. The key aim of the CONNECT project is to drop this heterogeneity barrier and achieve universal interoperability. Here we report on the development of the overall CONNECT architecture that will underpin this solution; in this respect, we present the following contributions: i) an elicitation of interoperability requirements from a set of pervasive computing scenarios, ii) a survey of existing solutions to interoperability, iii) an initial view of the CONNECT architecture, and iv) a series of experiments to provide initial validation of the architecture.

Abstract

The scenarios proposed in this deliverable are intended to identify the multiple dimensions of interoperability, and also foster further discussions with other work packages (WP1 to WP5). These will be refined and extended as the project progresses. The scenarios have been grouped into three computing domains: Ubiquitous computing, Daily life support and Telco Web 2.0 & Cloud Computing. Although the scenarios are partitioned into domains, they all have common properties such as the presence of disparate devices, a large proportion of peer-to-peer traffic and disparate interaction patterns.

Abstract

Distributed systems are becoming increasingly complex. We are moving from a world where we provide domain-specic middleware platforms (e.g., for Enterprise systems, Grid, MANET, ubiquitous environments) to one where these technology-dependent islands are themselves dynamically composed and connected together to create richer, dynamically deployed systems. Existing middleware approaches and paradigms are simply unable to cope with the demands of such heterogeneous and dynamic environments. Indeed, as we move towards a world of systems of systems, we can say that middleware is in crisis, being unable to deliver on its most central promises, which is oering interoperability, i.e., the ability of one or more systems to connect, understand and exchange data with one another.We argue that this requires a fundamental re-think of the architectural principles and techniques underpinning middleware platforms. We need to turn from relatively static solutions based on promoting a particular interoperability solution or bridging strategy, to much more dynamic solutions where we generate appropriate machinery for interoperability on the fly. This promotes an approach that may be termed emergent middleware designed to solve interoperability at runtime according to what is discovered and needed in a given context. This paper reports on the results of the Connect project, a collaborative initiative bringing together experts in middleware and software engineering, semantic modeling of services, and formal foundations of distributed systems, which together provide key building blocks for enabling emergent middleware.
