The heating of the liquid substrate by low-pressure (∼1 Pa) sputtering plasma has been investigated by in situ temperature measurements. The combination of "green" non-toxic solvent, castor oil, copper target, and direct current magnetron sputtering was chosen as a model system. The temperature increase induced by plasma was registered with two thermocouples placed immediately under the liquid surface and in the bulk solution. The effect of the working gas pressure and sputter power was studied. It was shown that the liquid temperature increases at a rate of up to 1 °C/min, depending on the sputtering conditions. The experimental data were compared with numerical calculations and COMSOL simulation. Provided information is essential data for the detailed explanation of the formation of nanoparticles during sputtering onto liquids, a clean approach for production of colloidal solutions of "naked" nanoparticles. ZnS nanoparticles were prepared by microwave assisted chemical method using Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) with different Cobalt (Co) concentration. We studied the compositional and structural properties of these samples by energy dispersive analysis of X-rays, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Size of the spherically shaped nanoparticles with aggregation is estimated to be in the range from 3 to 7 nm as seen from TEM images. Diffracted planes corresponding to cubic phase are observed in XRD pattern and average crystallite size is calculated through full width at half maximum from these diffracted planes. TO and LO phonon modes allowed in cubic phase for undoped and Co doped ZnS nanoparticles are studied by Raman spectroscopy whereas interaction between PVP with ZnS nanoparticles is studied using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Energy bandgap is calculated by UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy using Tauc plot and blue shift is observed with increased Co doping concentration into ZnS nanoparticles. Localized structure of the ZnS nanoparticles are strongly influenced by Co doping concentration as observed by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy which revealed the new emission peak at 519 nm. We could also observe quenching effect of PL intensity as a function of Co concentration in ZnS nanoparticles. Magnetic study on the 15% Co doped ZnS nanoparticles do not show ferromagnetic behavior. Antimicrobial effect is not observed against E. coli bacteria for Pure and 15% Co doped ZnS nanoparticles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Bi2S3 is a direct band gap semiconductor with a band gap of 1.3eV. It belongs to the family of metal chalcogenides of type A2 VB3 VI (A=As, Sb, and Bi; B=S, Se, and Te), whose importance in photovoltaic and thermoelectric applications is well recognized. Although nanostructures of Bi2S3 have been obtained using a number of techniques, reports on assemblies of Bi2S3 are sparse. In the present work, we prepared single crystalline bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) nanorods at room temperature by reacting Bi(NO3)3, thioacetamide (TAA), hydrochloric acid and distilled water. Energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX) obtained from Bi2S3 nanorods indicated no incorporation of other foreign impurities in it. X-ray diffraction confirmed the single phase of Bi2S3 and different diffracting planes were indexed based on the orthorhombic structure and lattice parameters were determined. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was used to evaluate its composition and purity. The synthesized nanorods with different images observed under transmission electron microscopy (TEM) are shown in the paper and the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern obtained from these nanorods shows their single crystalline behavior. Raman measurement performed at room temperature using Ar+ laser (488nm) confirms the presence of 238cm−1 and 972cm−1 phonon modes. The optical absorption spectra obtained by UV–vis spectrometer show blue shift in comparison to bulk Bi2S3 while its thermal stability was studied by thermogravimetric analysis.
