Skin healing occurs through an intricate process called wound healing which comprises four phases: coagulation and hemostasis, inflammation, cellular proliferation, and remodeling. Chronic wounds often arise because of prolonged or excessive inflammation, which hinders the healing process and wound closure. Despite the recognized efficacy of Pogostemon cablin (patchouli) in wound healing, the precise mechanism of action of Pogostemon cablin extract (PCE) on inflammation and wound healing remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of PCE on cell proliferation and wound healing, as well as its anti-inflammatory activity, using in vitro experiments. We found that PCE increased cell proliferation and expression of the cell proliferation marker Ki67 and accelerated wound healing in human keratinocytes through the activation of OR2AT4. Furthermore, PCE exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 and -8 in lipopolysaccharide-treated and TNF-α-exposed THP-1 and HaCaT cells, respectively. Overall, these findings suggest that PCE holds therapeutic potential by promoting cell proliferation, facilitating wound healing, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects.

Pogostemon cablin, an oil-producing plant, proceeded vegetative propagation due to limited natural pollination, leading to lower genetic variations. The presented study investigated the morphological diversity and productivity, specifically the ninth mutant vegetative (MV9) generation resulting from polyploid mutation induced by colchicine in the P. cablin var. Sidikalang. The study transpired between August 2022 and April 2023 at the Tissue Culture Laboratory, the Cikabayan Experimental Station, IPB University, Bogor, Indonesia. The experiment had a randomized complete block design (RCBD) arrangement with eight genotypes, including control as the single factor and three replications. Various characteristic measurements included essential oil yield growth and potential. The findings revealed that aneuploid mutants exhibited more leaves, primary, and secondary branches than the control plants and polyploid mutants (P < 0.05). Polyploid mutants (tetraploid and mixoploid) displayed longer and broader leaves, larger leaf surfaces, thicker leaves, and greater stem diameter (P < 0.05). Accumulation of leaves, primary, and secondary branches caused an increase in the patchouli plant's fresh weight. Patchouli oil production per hectare indicated a correlation to leaf number (r = 0.48), primary branches (r = 0.41), secondary branches (r = 0.48), and essential oil yield (r = 0.87). The study also revealed the considerable genetic diversity among the patchouli mutants, paving the way to develop promising new plant lines, specifically to obtain superior patchouli with the highest biomass and oil. Stomatal density influences plant photosynthesis, transpiration, and secondary production like fruit and oil. It could serve as a selection criterion for developing plant varieties. The genetic diversity of patchouli is still relatively limited owing to a lack of flowering and fruiting; therefore, genetic variability is also limited. One approach to overcoming this problem is to collect plants from specific regions, called accessions, to identify potential varieties capable of producing abundant and high-quality patchouli oil. Parameters such as stomatal density were evaluated during this process. Conventional manual calculations have inherent drawbacks, including time constraints, low precision, and susceptibility to bias. Therefore, automated methods are essential for stomatal detection models and counting calculations based on deep learning. The dataset consisted of 100 and 400 microscopy images split at a ratio of 8:2 for the training and testing data, respectively. A stomata detection model using YOLOv5 achieved precision, recall, and F1-Score of 0.88 each. The accuracy of the stomata calculation on the test data was 97%. Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin), is an industrially important aromatic plant that produces patchouli oil. The present experiment aimed to generate polyploid plants of patchouli with increased herb yield, oil production, and higher patchouli alcohol content. In the present study, colchicine, a chemical compound known to induce polyploidy was used at concentrations of 0.2% and 0.3% for 48 h. The diploid variety CIM-Shrestha (2n = 2X = 32) was used as the starting point. Polyploidy was successfully induced in vitro conditions and confirmed through various analyses including chromosome counting, anatomical, morphological, and gene expression studies. Treating the diploid callus with 0.2% colchicine resulted in viable and stable tetraploid seedlings. These tetraploids had a chromosomal count of 2n = 4x = 64. Tetraploids exhibited distinct morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics, such as thicker leaves, more oil glands, higher chloroplast numbers, larger stomata size, patchouli alcohol, and α-Guaiene. In field conditions, the induced tetraploids remained stable and the majority of tetraploid lines showed higher oil content and patchouli alcohol concentrations compared to diploid plants, although herb yield was lower in tetraploids. In the gene expression study, five (PcHMGR, PcFPPS, PcTPSCF2, PcTPSB15, and PcPTS, along with the expression of the control gene Pc18S) pathway genes related to the patchouli alcohol production pathway were studied. The Real Time-qPCR results show that there was no significant change in the expression of any of the five analyzed genes.Key message: Polyploidy induction leads to a range of changes in plant traits and often contributes to improved yield. Macroalgae is extensively being used to develop eco‐friendly biopolymer or biodegradable films, but have inferior mechanical strength. This study aims to enhance the mechanical properties of seaweed films by incorporating Patchouli microparticles (PMP) derived from dried Patchouli plants (DP‐PMP) and extracted residue (ER‐PMP) from Patchouli extraction process widely use in the perfume and cosmetic industry. The PMPs, were incorporated into films forming solution at varying concentrations (1%, 3%, 5%, and 7% wt/wt) respectively. Despite similar thermal properties, the inclusion of ER‐PMP resulted in an increasing ash residue content with an increase in concentration. The optimal tensile strength was achieved with a 3% PMP loading, while higher concentrations resulted in a decline in strength. Notably, the sample containing 1% PMP demonstrated superior elasticity. Moreover, with increasing concentrations of PMPs, all samples displayed elevated surface roughness and enhanced hydrophobicity. All samples display significant antimicrobial activity against E‐coli and Salmonella sp.; however, the sample incorporating ER‐PMP showed less effect. In summary, the study suggests that DP‐PMP and ER‐PMP can serve as effective fillers to enhance the mechanical properties of seaweed biofilms, with an optimal loading of 3%. Their antimicrobial activity renders them suitable biopolymers for active packaging in food applications and other purposes. Archives and correspondences are often overlooked resources in assessing taxonomic and nomenclatural information and this sometimes affects taxonomic proposals. Here we show that unpublished illustrations not only can definitively help in identifying unresolved or poorly known names but can be themselves original material and sometimes must serve as types, avoiding neotypes or misleading synonymizations. We present the case of three names introduced by the Neapolitan botanist Michele Tenore (Muscari strangwaysii, Asparagaceae; Pogostemon suavis and Salvia menthifolia, Lamiaceae). They have been interpreted differently over time because herbarium specimens that constituted original material were not accurately searched for (M. strangwaysii) or were unavailable (P. suavis, S. menthifolia). Although these three names are currently synonymized (with M. neglectum, P. cablin, and S. chamaedryoides) we demonstrate that these synonymies are not correct, based on the detailed study of original nineteenth‐century watercolour paintings, a re‐examination of protologues and specimens preserved in the Botanical Garden of Naples (NAP). The watercolour paintings are crucial for application of the names, because diagnostic features often disappear with drying (M. strangwaysii), or because they are the only extant original material (P. suavis). Anxiety disorder is one of the important public health problems. This study aimed to find out whether patchouli (Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth.) essential oil (PEO) has an anxiolytic-like effect in mice. A total of 20 mice were divided into five treatment groups i.e. (C1) was treated with 1 mg/kg of saline intraperitoneally; (C2) was treated with 1 mg/kg of diazepam intraperitoneally; (T1) 1% PEO inhalation, (T2) 2.5% PEO inhalation, and (T3) 5% PEO inhalation. All experimental animals were put in the Elevated Plus-Maze (EPM), observed for five minutes, and investigated the following parameters i.e. the total number of squares that are transverse in the open arms (STO), the number of visits to the open arms (VOA), the number of visits to the closed arms (VCA), the time spent in the open arms (TOA), and the time spent in the closed arms (TCA). In results, T1 and T2 groups had a minor impact on the VOA. T1 group also had little effect on TOA. Closed-arm activities (VCA and TCA) were unaffected by any of the treatments. The conclusion was revealed that T1 or less of PEO inhalation can potentially provide anxiolytic-like effects in mice.

Southeast Sulawesi province, as one of the cocoa baskets and the center of the National Cocoa Movement (GERNAS), continues to experience a decline in cocoa production and land area. One factor is the widespread conversion of cocoa land. This phenomenon needs to be highlighted and studied further because it can affect the sustainability of the cocoa value chain in Southeast Sulawesi. This study aims to determine what factors influence cocoa farmers in converting cocoa farmland to other farms in Southeast Sulawesi Province's two leading cocoa-producing districts. The research sites were purposely selected because they are the two leading cocoa-producing districts in the province. This study used logistic regression analysis. Cocoa farmers in Kolaka district converted cocoa land to patchouli farming, while cocoa farmers in East Kolaka district converted their cocoa land to rice farming. The analysis results show that the main factors that significantly influence cocoa farmers' decision to convert cocoa land are cocoa farming experience and the price of other commodities (including the level of income farmers receive from farming other commodities). The primary policy that the government can take in maintaining cocoa land area is to provide price certainty for cocoa itself. So far, cocoa farmers have always faced price uncertainty, and cocoa's value chain and sustainability in Southeast Sulawesi Province need to be clarified.

Essential oils are natural plant products that are very interesting, as they are important sources of biologically active compounds. They comprise eco-friendly alternatives to mosquito vector management, particularly essential oil nanoemulsion. Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of 16 selected essential oils (1500 ppm) in controlling mosquitoes by investigating their larvicidal effects against the larvae and adults of the West Nile virus vector Culex pipiens L. (Diptera: Culicidae); the best oils were turned into nanoemulsions and evaluated under laboratory and field conditions. The results show that honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium) and patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) essential oils were more effective in killing larvae than the other oils (100% mortality) at 24 h post-treatment. The nanoemulsions of honeysuckle (LC50 = 88.30 ppm) and patchouli (LC50 = 93.05 ppm) showed significantly higher larvicidal activity compared with bulk honeysuckle (LC50 = 247.72 ppm) and patchouli (LC50 = 276.29 ppm) oils. L. caprifolium and P. cablin (100% mortality), followed by Narcissus tazetta (97.78%), Rosmarinus officinalis (95.56%), and Lavandula angustifolia (95.55%), were highly effective oils in killing female mosquitoes, and their relative efficacy at LT50 was 5.5, 5.3, 5.8, 4.1, and 3.2 times greater, respectively, than Aloe vera. The results of the field study show that the honeysuckle and patchouli oils and their nanoemulsions reduced densities to 89.4, 86.5, 98.6, and 97.0% at 24 h post-treatment, respectively, with persistence for eight days post-treatment in pools. Nano-honeysuckle (100% mortality) was more effective than honeysuckle oils (98.0%). In this study, two efficient plant growth promoters coupled with potent antagonists viz. Pseudomonas monteilii strain-CRC1, Cedecea davisae strain-CRC2 and AM Fungi named Glomus intraradices (GI) were assessed individually and in combination for their potential to increase yield and essential oil yield as well as lessen the severity of the disease caused by Rhizoctonia solani in Pogostemon cablin (patchouli). In field trials, nine treatments were used: CRC1, CRC2, GI, CRC1 + CRC2, CRC1 + GI, CRC2 + GI, CRC1 + CRC2 + GI, un-inoculated vermicompost, and uninoculated soil as control, with five replications in randomised complete block design, where Rhizoctonia root-rot/wilt was a persistent problem. As compared to the control, the plants inoculated with CRC1 + CRC2 + GI performed best and significantly increased the plant height (87%), plant spread (50%), branch count (67%), herbs yield (67%), essential oil yield (69%) as well as reduced the percent disease index (68%) and percent wilt incidence (87.5%). Moreover, the Patchouli alcohol, a key component of its essential oil, was found to be markedly enhanced by 10% in CRC1 + CRC2 + GI inoculated plants. Furthermore, 43, 27 and 191% of higher uptake of NPK were observed in CRC1 + CRC2 + GI inoculated plants, respectively. After harvesting, a considerable abundance of CRC1, CRC2, and GI in the rhizosphere soil was observed. The results of this experiment indicate that higher herb yields and other observed plant attributes could be due to improved nutrient (NPK) uptake by the patchouli plants. Although archaeological excavations have recovered a large number of vessels used to hold perfumes or ointments in ancient Rome, little is known about the chemical composition or origin of the substances they contained. Most available information pertains to ointment and/or cosmetic bases rather than to essences. The discovery in 2019 of an ointment jar (unguentarium) made of rock crystal (quartz) that was sealed with a stopper and contained a solid mass in a Roman tomb in Carmona (Seville, Spain) was a rather unusual finding. This paper reports the results of an archaeometric study of the unguentarium stopper and its contents. Based on them, and on comparisons with commercially available patchouli and nard oil standards, the perfume held in the unguentarium was probably patchouli. To our knowledge, this may be the first time a perfume from Roman times has been identified, which is a major advance in this field. The unguentarium stopper consisted of dolomite, a material also unknown in this type of use, and bitumen was used to seal the unguentarium with the stopper.

Background: Land characteristics and its criteria are important factors affecting the success of crop cultivation. This research aimed to evaluate the value and criteria of land characteristics for Aceh patchouli. Methods: The study was conducted at smallholders' adopting patchouli farming in North Aceh (AU) and Gayo Lues (GL) using purposive sampling method. Eleven patchouli farming in both AU and GL were selected. Soil sampling and agroclimate data were collected from the farming. Result: The results revealed that the altitude varied at each plantation and there were significant differences of altitudes, climates and soil characteristics between plantations in those two regions. It is found that the land characteristics in AU and GL of patchouli plantations are classified into marginally suitable (S3) and not suitable (N). But, the best class for patchouli lies between S1-S3, where S3 class requires adequate rainfall and organic-C, enabling the land to upgrade its class, to be resulted in an increase of patchouli production. The best patchouli growth and production was determined by land characteristics like base saturation (BS), total-N, erosion hazard, stoniness and rocks outcrop and have been evaluated and suitable suggestions were given. The control of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci relies heavily on the use of synthetic insecticides. There is a need to develop alternative control strategies due to concerns about impact of these insecticides on the environmental and human health, and the threat of insecticide resistance. Botanical oil extracts could potentially be used for the management of whiteflies and other pests. The study reported here therefore aimed to evaluate the efficacy of selected botanical oils against the cassava whitefly, B. tabaci and test their effect on its feeding behaviour. Patchouli oil treatment was the most effective at repelling whiteflies in no choice and choice experiments with up to 85% of whiteflies being repelled. Oviposition was also reduced 50–89% in patchouli. Neem was found to be effective at reducing oviposition, nymph and adult emergence by 50%, 70% and 80%, respectively, in a screenhouse no choice experiment. Patchouli significantly reduced the phloem ingestion phase (E2) by 40% and potential drops (pd) by 46% compared to control plants. Neem significantly increased the non‐probing duration by 48% and reduced pd by 50% compared to the control. Patchouli and neem were found to be the most effective among the selected botanical oils. These two oils should be further evaluated for efficacy under field conditions to determine suitability for recommendation as biopesticides against the cassava B. tabaci whitefly. A renewed interest in using nature-originated medicines can be seen throughout the world due to their benefits when compared to synthetic or semi-synthetic drugs in the aspect of increasing the quality of life of human beings. Pogostemon heyneanus Benth is a prominent and well-known medicinal plant in Asian countries that is recommended with high value in traditional medicinal practices, Ayurvedic treatments and folkloric use. It is also known as 'Indian patchouli' and 'Java patchouli'. P. heyneanus is pharmacologically and economically important due to its essential oil and is used in perfumery industries as well. The consistency of the presence of a wide range of phytochemical constituents such as phenolic compounds, terpenes, steroids, flavonoids, saponins, and tannins enables activities like cytotoxic and anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, gastroprotective, etc. Essential oil of P. heyneanus is comprised of α–pinene, β-pinene, limonene, β-pachoulin, seychellene, β-caryophyllene, α–guaiene, nerolidol and patchouli alcohol. Moreover, P. heyneanus is a unique cause having acetophenone as its main component which was not reported in the essential oils of other Pogostemon species. The scope of the present review was to gather scientific information on P. heyneanus in terms of habitat and distribution, traditional uses and ethnopharmacology, phytochemistry, and medicinal activities (cytotoxic and anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant and gastroprotective), which were published before 31st July 2022. Simple Summary: The discovery of antibiotics was a breakthrough in medicine. However, bacterial defense mechanisms driven by genetic variation resulted in resistance to these compounds relatively quickly. Moreover, new classes of antibiotics have not been developed for 30 years. Within the European Union, the EU Parliament and Council Regulation No. 2019/6, which concerns veterinary medicinal products, is currently in force. The current goal is to reduce the use of antibiotics and to stop the rise of drug resistance in bacteria because such antimicrobial resistant organisms can be transmitted to humans through the consumption of animal products or direct contact with animals (dogs, cats, etc.). For this reason, there is a growing interest in essential oils (EOs). As natural mixtures (usually of terpenes and their derivatives), they may consist of about 20–60 components with 1–3 dominant component(s). An important feature of EOs is their hydrophobicity, which allows them to react with lipids present in bacterial cell membranes and mitochondria, disrupting the functioning of cell structures and consequently making them more permeable to other components or antibiotics. In the present manuscript, the activity of two EOs (patchouli and tea tree) was assessed, and their interaction with gentamicin and enrofloxacin was studied. In this paper, we show the effect of some essential oils (EOs) on staphylococci, including multidrug-resistant strains isolated from pyoderma in dogs. A total of 13 Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and 8 Staphylococcus aureus strains were studied. To assess the sensitivity of each strain to the antimicrobial agents, two commercial EOs from patchouli (Pogostemon cablin; PcEO) and tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia; MaEO) as well as two antibiotics (gentamicin and enrofloxacin) were used. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) followed by checkerboards in the combination of EO-antibiotic were performed. Finally, fractional inhibitory concentrations were calculated to determine possible interactions between these antimicrobial agents. PcEO MIC ranged from 0.125 to 0.5 % v/v (1.2–4.8 mg/mL), whereas MaEO MIC was tenfold higher (0.625–5% v/v or 5.6–44.8 mg/mL). Gentamicin appeared to be highly prone to interacting with EOs. Dual synergy (38.1% of cases) and PcEO additive/MaEO synergism (53.4%) were predominantly observed. On the contrary, usually, no interactions between enrofloxacin and EOs were observed (57.1%). Both commercial EOs were characterized by natural composition without artificial adulteration. Patchouli extracts and oils extracted from Pogostemon cablin are essential raw material for the perfume and cosmetics industries, in addition to being used as a natural additive for food flavoring. Steam distillation is a standard method used for plant extraction. However, this method causes thermal degradation of some essential components of the oil. In this study, patchouli was extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) under different conditions of pressure (10–30 MPa) and temperature (40–80 °C). The chemical components of the crude extracted oil and the functional group were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The extraction with supercritical carbon dioxide was shown to provide a higher yield (12.41%) at a pressure of 20 MPa and a temperature of 80 °C. Patchouli alcohol, Azulene, δ-Guaiene, and Seychellene are the main bioactive compounds that GC-MS results have identified. FTIR spectra showed alcohol, aldehyde, and aromatic ring bond stretching peaks. The plant species Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth (Lamiaceae; Synonyms: Patchouli, Oriza) It is an herb widely used around the world. In traditional medicine it is used in the treatment of inflammation, tumors, in the prevention of oxidative states related to aging, and its ioinsecticidal activities are exploited against insects and microorganisms. For this review, publications from the previous ten years collected in PubMed, Web of Science, Springer, and Scopus were examined. Currently, studies report insecticidal activity in its essential oil (EOPC). However, to better understand the ioinsecticidal activity of EOPC, it is necessary to understand its phytochemistry, which is responsible for its therapeutic activities. Thus, this review aims to describe the phytochemical profile of EOPC, ethnopharmacological uses, and some biological activities of EOPC that are described in this article, but with greater emphasis on its bioinsecticide potential. Patchouli plant characteristics are the basis that must be ascertain to design a patchouli harvester machine. The objective of this study was to determine the physical and mechanical characteristics of patchouli plants that can be used in the design of patchouli harvester machines. The data were collected by doing observation and measurement in the field and laboratory. Patchouli plants used with water content from 30 to 40% at the age of harvest 8 months after planting. Various physical characteristics of patchouli indicated the average value of plant height 112.7 cm, clump circumference 1.67 m, main stem diameter 9.88 mm, the clump diameter at a height of 20 cm from the surface of the land 16.5 cm, mass/clump 1.48 kg, and bulk density 0.11 kg/L. Physical characteristics play an important role in choosing equipment and the main dimension in designing a harvester machine. Determination of mechanical characteristics showed that the tensile strength value of patchouli was from 5.7 to 17.15 MPa with a modulus of elasticity from 0.12 to 0.5 GPa. The forces required for the design of the harvester machine such as the laying force, the retraction force and patchouli's cutting resistance achieved an average value of 6.19 N, 68.89 N, 108.47 N, respectively. The mean angle of repose was 48° at 32 % moisture content and friction coefficient was 0.71. The results obtained about the physical and mechanical characteristics of patchouli plants can be useful in providing information that helps in designing patchouli harvesting machines.

In this paper, we show the effect of some essential oils (EOs) on staphylococci, including multidrug-resistant strains isolated from pyoderma in dogs. A total of 13 Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and 8 Staphylococcus aureus strains were studied. To assess the sensitivity of each strain to the antimicrobial agents, two commercial EOs from patchouli (Pogostemon cablin; PcEO) and tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia; MaEO) as well as two antibiotics (gentamicin and enrofloxacin) were used. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) followed by checkerboards in the combination of EO-antibiotic were performed. Finally, fractional inhibitory concentrations were calculated to determine possible interactions between these antimicrobial agents. PcEO MIC ranged from 0.125 to 0.5 % v/v (1.2–4.8 mg/mL), whereas MaEO MIC was tenfold higher (0.625–5% v/v or 5.6–44.8 mg/mL). Gentamicin appeared to be highly prone to interacting with EOs. Dual synergy (38.1% of cases) and PcEO additive/MaEO synergism (53.4%) were predominantly observed. On the contrary, usually, no interactions between enrofloxacin and EOs were observed (57.1%). Both commercial EOs were characterized by natural composition without artificial adulteration. Patchouli and tea tree oils can be good alternatives for treating severe cases of pyoderma in dogs, especially when dealing with multidrug-resistant strains.

NEs of EO and HE displayed highest efficacy in contact toxicity (LC50 43.2 and 58.4 μg mL−1) after 48 h and fumigant toxicity (LC50 9.3 and 13.6 μg mL−1) after 24 h against T. urticae. In addition, NEs of EO showed considerable antifeedant and feeding deterrent action (AI 99.21 ± 0.74 and FI 99.73 ± 1.24) against S. litura larvae. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pogostemon cablin, also known as Patchouli is an essential oil yielding plant with high medicinal properties and having great value for its unique essential oil component. The essential oil is widely used in flavor and fragrance industries. The objective of the present study is to evaluate molecular diversity among mutation treated progeny using RAPD (Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) and ISSR (Inter Simple Sequence Repeat) markers. The essential oil composition which was analyzed using GC/MS showed patchouli alcohol as major compound, followed by sabinene, (-)β-elemene, α-Guaiene, α-humulene, caryophyllene oxide and viridiflorol in the studied lines. Total 44 RAPD and 34 ISSR primers were used for 41 mutated selected lines, which showed an average polymorphic percentage of 70.1% and 58.14% respectively. Genetic parameters studied by both markers systems were found to be more or less similar. Analysis of molecular variance showed 45% variation among population and 55% within the population by RAPD marker, while ISSR marker showed 36% variation among population and 64% within population. Cluster analysis using both markers grouped the lines into three main clusters and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) plot also supported cluster analysis data. Ralstonia solanacearum (RS) wilt is a soil-borne devastating disease that causes enormous loss to patchouli in tropical and subtropical areas of Asia. The aim of this study was to develop a feasible method to isolate antagonistic fungal endophytes against RS from patchouli and to investigate their effects on biocontrol of patchouli RS wilt. Diversity of endophytic fungi in roots, stems and leaves of healthy patchouli was estimated with Illumina-based sequencing strategies. The number of fungal operational taxonomic units (OTUs) at 97% similarity level was 465, 542 and 298 in roots, stems and leaves, respectively. The most detected genus in patchouli stems and leaves was Aspergillus, while the most dominant genera in roots were Athelia (11.1%) and Myrothecium (10.1%). Due to wide applications of Myrothecium species for biocontrol, 40 isolates of Myrothecium were isolated from patchouli roots using the selection medium for Myrothecium. At the species level, the strain (SWG1) with the most potent activity against RS in vitro was further identified and used to control patchouli RS wilt in vivo. The results of pot experiments showed that fresh weight, dry weight and height of patchouli seedlings inoculated with SWG1 increased by 58.2%, 65.5% and 11.9%, respectively, compared to seedlings without inoculation. The inoculation of SWG1 reduced the disease incidence and disease index of patchouli RS wilt by 66.7% and 71.0%, respectively. The results indicated the directed isolation of antagonistic endophytic fungi based on Illumina sequencing analysis of the ribosomal fungal ITS should be valuable to screen biological agents to control plant diseases. Patchouli is one of the essential oil-producing plants which is commonly found in Indonesia, but the productivity tends to decline. Tissue culture technology is one alternative to increase patchouli plant productivity. Tissue culture requires growth regulators in order for the plants to grow optimally. Moringa plants have the potential as a source of growth regulators for tissue culture because Moringa leaves contain the zeatin hormone. Therefore, a comparison test of various concentrations of the zeatin and the moringa leaf extract is needed to determine whether the Moringa leaf extract can be an alternative to the zeatin hormone. This study aimed to investigate the effect of Moringa leaf extract on the growth of patchouli bud explants. The study employed a complete random design (CRD) with the treatment of concentrations of Moringa leaf extract in MS media. Moringa leaf extract was given at 30 grams/L, 40 grams/L, and 50 grams/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the zeatin hormone was given at a concentration of 1.5 ppm, 2 ppm, and 2.5 ppm. Each treatment was repeated four times. Moringa leaves were extracted by maceration method, and patchouli explants were obtained from the 3rd sub-culture of patchouli shoots. From the research results, it can be concluded that (1) the use of Moringa leaf extract can improve the growth of patchouli explants, and (2) the use of 40 grams/L of Moringa leaf extract can be an alternative to substitute the use of 1.5 ppm zeatin hormone.

Indonesian patchouli oil products are able to dominate the patchouli oil market share in the world up to 80-90%. Therefore, patchouli commodity needs to be developed in areas that have the potential and prospects for patchouli plantations to support economic growth. The Future Market Sights (2+018) states that the patchouli oil market, globally, is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.8% in terms of revenue in the coming years. Revenue generated from the global patchouli oil market is projected to reach US $ 86.6 million by 2028. The research was conducted in Aceh Utara District, which is one of the administrative districts in Aceh Province. This research was conducted since November 2019 until November 2020. The object of research is patchouli farming and patchouli oil refining. The scope of this research is limited to the potential and prospects of patchouli farming development in Aceh Utara Regency because the area is one of the patchouli producers in Aceh Province. The research method and data collection used in patchouli farming and patchouli oil refining are census methods. The hypothesis was tested using financial analysis to determine the prospects for the development of patchouli oil farming and refining in Aceh Utara District, whether it is feasible to develop or not. The methods used to see the feasibility of patchouli oil refining are NPV, IRR, Net B / C, and Payback Period. Judging from the financial aspect using financial feasibility analysis tools, the NPV value is Rp. 673,215,682, IRR of 43.15%, Net B / C of 182.37, and Pay Back Period (PBP) can be returned in the second year of the first month. With all of the aspects considered to have met the eligibility criteria, the patchouli oil refining business in Aceh Utara District is feasible to develop financially.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this experimental study was to examine the effects of the Chinese herbal medicines Patchouli and Elsholtzia on the follicular granulosa cells of hens undergoing heat stress conditions. In the current investigation, hen follicular granulosa cells were isolated from the prehierarchical follicles of layer hens and then cultured in-vitro. The cells were randomly divided into the 6 groups. Following the completion of this study's experiments using different heat stress and medicinal treatments, the cell activities of each group were measured using an MTT method. The levels of the heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) were detected using ELISA. The expressions of the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) mRNA; cytochrome P450 family 11, subfamily A, member 1 (CYP11A1) mRNA; proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) mRNA; and the follicle stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) were detected using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reactions. The concentration levels of estrogen and progesterone in the cell supernatant of each group were measured using ELISA. The results showed that cell activity had significantly decreased following the heat stress treatments at 43℃, 44℃, and 45℃ (P < 0.01), respectively. Meanwhile, cell activities observed in Patchouli and Elsholtzia were found to be much better than those of heat stress group (P < 0.05). In addition, the expression levels of HSP70 in the follicular granulosa cells of Patchouli and Elsholtzia groups were lower than those of heat stress group. Patchouli and Elsholtzia can maintain expressions of the receptor at 43℃. This study determined that the estrogen and progesterone in the supernatant fluid of Patchouli and Elsholtzia were higher than those observed in heat stress. Therefore, the results obtained in this study indicated that the Patchouli and Elsholtzia treatments administered prior the heat stress experiments had successfully protected the follicular granulosa cells from heat damages while maintaining the normal secretory functions of the granulosa cells.

Skin healing occurs through an intricate process called wound healing which comprises four phases: coagulation and hemostasis, inflammation, cellular proliferation, and remodeling. Chronic wounds often arise because of prolonged or excessive inflammation, which hinders the healing process and wound closure. Despite the recognized efficacy of Pogostemon cablin (patchouli) in wound healing, the precise mechanism of action of Pogostemon cablin extract (PCE) on inflammation and wound healing remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of PCE on cell proliferation and wound healing, as well as its anti-inflammatory activity, using in vitro experiments. We found that PCE increased cell proliferation and expression of the cell proliferation marker Ki67 and accelerated wound healing in human keratinocytes through the activation of OR2AT4. Furthermore, PCE exhibited anti-inflammatory effects by decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6 and -8 in lipopolysaccharide-treated and TNF-α-exposed THP-1 and HaCaT cells, respectively. Overall, these findings suggest that PCE holds therapeutic potential by promoting cell proliferation, facilitating wound healing, and exerting anti-inflammatory effects.

Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth. or "Patchouli" is a prized medicinal herb used in various ethno-medicinal preparations and perfume industry. However due to over-collection and nematode infections in the roots of P. cablin , the wild populations are facing a steady decline and are at risk. In the present research, we report a fast clonally stable regeneration protocol for P. cablin with the utilization of meta -topolin (m T), a prized aromatic cytokinin (CK) for the first time. The highest rate of shoot proliferation i.e. 45 shoots/explant was observed after 4 weeks from leaf segments on MS media fortified with 1.0 mg/l m T. The highest rate of rooting was observed when the regenerated micro shoots were cultured in MS medium supplemented with 1.5 mg/l IBA. Direct root regeneration was tested upon with the applications of three conventional auxins i.e., Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) using the same explants. The genetic homogeneity of the regenerated clones was ascertained, using two gene targeted molecular marker systems namely Start Codon Targeted Polymorphism (SCoT) and Inter-Retrotransposon Amplified Polymorphism (IRAP) ascertaining genetic stability amongst the regenerates and the donor plant. In precise, the present research provides vital insights into the role of aromatic CKs like m T in the high frequency regeneration of medicinally important plants like P. cablin which might serve as important baseline information for the pharma industry where supply of Quality Planting Material (QPM) is a real challenge. Context: The presence in Cuba of taxons of Pogostemon Desf. (Lamiaceae), a native genus from Africa, Asia, and Australia, whose previous recorded information was not accurate. Objectives: To report on relocation of a species of this genus, define its nomenclature, contribute with data for identification, and provide arguments of its usefulness. Methods: Study of herbarium specimens, field exploration, sample comparisons with descriptions, analytical keys, and samples incorporated to scientific collections. Results: The presence of Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth (Lamiaceae) was confirmed in the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Camagüey, Holguín, and Guantánamo, Cuba. This is a promising species for the medical-pharmaceutical industry, and the areas of perfumes and cosmetics. Conclusions: Out of the 34 infra-generic Lamiaceae representatives known to be of exotic origin in the Cuban archipelago, 25 have been unable to naturalize.

Abstracts Purpose Protein hydrolysates (PHs) have attracted much interest in recent years owing to the beneficial effects on plant growth. Feather, one of the most abundant wastes generated from the poultry industry, is rich in proteins and amino acids. It can be utilized to generate value-added bioproducts such as liquid feather protein hydrolysate (FPH). This research aims to evaluate the effect of FPH as fertilizer on plant growth. Methods Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) at a temperature of 160–180 °C and a holding time of 30 min was employed to convert feathers into a liquid feather-derived protein hydrolysate (FPH) containing nitrogen and amino acids. To evaluate the effect of FPH produced from the HTT process on plant growth, FPH (0.5–5 mL/L) and its combination with 50% recommended dose of chemical fertilizers were applied to patchouli and mung bean plants. Results Results showed that the combination of FPH and 50% dose chemical fertilizer on patchouli yielded a statistically significant increase in leaf area, dry weight, and chlorophyll content in comparison to the control, suggesting that the application of FPH along with the inorganic fertilizer can increase fertilizer use efficiency. Combined treatment of inorganic fertilizer and FPH on mung bean also showed a relatively higher yield per plant compared with control. Conclusion Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) can be a useful method for nutrient recovery from animal residuals such as feather. The application of FPH obtained through HTT could improve crop productivity and reduce chemical fertilizer consumption.

The importance of patchouli plants to produce essential oil has established this medicinal herb as one of the Indonesia’s main economic contributor. To date, Indonesia can only provide 5 varieties i.e. Sidikalang, Tapak Tuan, Lhokseumawe, Patchoulina 1 and Patchoulina 2. In order to increase national patchouli production, several efforts needs to be done by providing new superior patchouli lines. This experiment was undertaken to reveal diversity of mutant progenies derived from gamma ray irradiation in patchouli. Six SSR primers were used to determine genetic diversity on MV3 generation of the mutants. Molecular analysis revealed a moderate to high polymorphism based on tested primers, which amplified 73 bands, and resulting of 0.705 PIC value. Dendrogram analysis based on Euclidean dissimilarity showed broad diversity that ranged from 0.23 to 0.82. Phenotypic tree gave clear separation that all mutant clones were clustered into three different group, with Eucledian dissimilarity coefficient ranging from 0.02 to 0.13. This report indicates that Patchouli vegetatively-propagated mutants were able to maintain their variability continuously from their parental lines (M0). Furthermore, our findings offer comprehensive information on breeding strategies of patchouli plants, giving an opportunity to assess important traits at early generation.

Patchouli extracts and oils extracted from Pogostemon cablin are essential raw material for the perfume and cosmetics industries, in addition to being used as a natural additive for food flavoring. Steam distillation is a standard method used for plant extraction. However, this method causes thermal degradation of some essential components of the oil. In this study, patchouli was extracted with supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) under different conditions of pressure (10–30 MPa) and temperature (40–80 °C). The chemical components of the crude extracted oil and the functional group were characterized using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR). The extraction with supercritical carbon dioxide was shown to provide a higher yield (12.41%) at a pressure of 20 MPa and a temperature of 80 °C. Patchouli alcohol, Azulene, δ-Guaiene, and Seychellene are the main bioactive compounds that GC-MS results have identified. FTIR spectra showed alcohol, aldehyde, and aromatic ring bond stretching peaks. Extraction of patchouli with supercritical carbon dioxide provided a higher yield and a better quality of the crude patchouli oil.

Patchouli, Pogostemon cablin (Blanco) Benth., is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant from the order Lamiales. It is considered a valuable herb due to its essential oil content and range of therapeutic effects. This study aimed to explore the evolutionary history of repetitive sequences in the patchouli genome by analyzing tandem repeats and transposable elements (TEs). We first retrieved genomic data for patchouli and four other Lamiales species from the GenBank database. Next, the content of tandem repeats with different period sizes was identified. Long terminal repeats (LTRs) were then identified with LTR_STRUC. Finally, the evolutionary landscape of TEs was explored using an in-house PERL program. The analysis of repetitive sequences revealed that tandem repeats constitute a higher proportion of the patchouli genome compared to the four other species. Analyses of TE families showed that most of the repetitive sequences in the patchouli genome are TEs, and that recently inserted TEs make up a comparatively larger proportion than older ones. Our analyses of LTR retrotransposons in their host genome indicated the existence of ancient LTR retrotransposon expansion, and the escape of these elements from natural selection revealed their ages. Patchouli plant characteristics are the basis that must be ascertain to design a patchouli harvester machine. The objective of this study was to determine the physical and mechanical characteristics of patchouli plants that can be used in the design of patchouli harvester machines. The data were collected by doing observation and measurement in the field and laboratory. Patchouli plants used with water content from 30 to 40% at the age of harvest 8 months after planting. Various physical characteristics of patchouli indicated the average value of plant height 112.7 cm, clump circumference 1.67 m, main stem diameter 9.88 mm, the clump diameter at a height of 20 cm from the surface of the land 16.5 cm, mass/clump 1.48 kg, and bulk density 0.11 kg/L. Physical characteristics play an important role in choosing equipment and the main dimension in designing a harvester machine. Patchouli oil has exhibited remarkable efficacy in the treatment of colitis. However, its volatility and potential irritancy are often drawbacks when extensively used in clinical applications. Oil gel is a semisolid and thermoreversible system that has received extensive interest for its solubility enhancement, inhibition of bioactive component recrystallization, and the facilitation of controlled bioactive release. Therefore, we present a strategy to develop an oil gel formulation that addresses this multifaceted problem. Notably, a patchouli oil gel formulation was designed to solidify and trap patchouli oil into a spatially stable crystal-particle structure and colonic released delivery, which has an advantage of the stable structure and viscosity. The patchouli oil gel treatment of zebrafish with colitis improved goblet cells and decreased macrophages. Additionally, patchouli oil gel showed superior advantages for restoring the tissue barrier. Furthermore, our investigative efforts unveiled patchouli oil's influence on TRP channels, providing evidence for its potential role in mechanisms of anti-inflammatory action. While the journey continues, these preliminary revelations provide a robust foundation for considering the adoption of patchouli oil gel as a pragmatic intervention for managing colitis.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.; 2n = 32) is an aromatic herbaceous plant commonly cultivated for use in the the fragrance industry. As patchouli is propagated by cuttings polyploidization induction by colchicine treatment was conducted to obtain a new genotype with high patchouli alcohol content. This research aimed to increase patchouli genetic diversity with colchicine treatment by the formation of a polyploid plant. Axillary buds from single node cutting of aseptic plantlets were used as the explants. The experiment was arranged using a factorial completely randomized design with two factors, namely the concentration of colchicine and the immersion duration. Genetic diversity of patchouli was successfully enhanced by adjusting the colchicine concentration and immersion treatment. lethal concentration (LC) of 50% in patchouli was 0.132% and the LC 50% for soaking time was 60.16 hours. The number of chloroplasts, stomatal length and chromosome number increased with increasing ploidy, whereas stomatal density and the number of trichomes decreased. The chromosome number of 16 patchouli mutants in generation 4 was still unstable, and a chimera was found with mixoploidy between 20-80. A hierarchical dendogram clustered 16 patchouli mutants into four different groups.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of patchouli (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) inhalation by emergency nurses on their stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, burnout, blood pressure, and heart rate. Design: A randomized controlled trial. Setting/location: University hospital in Incheon. Subjects: This study was performed from May to August 2018 after all subjects provided written informed consent. Fifty eligible emergency nurses were recruited and randomly allocated to inhale 5% patchouli oil in sweet almond oil (patchouli group, n = 25) or pure sweet almond oil (control group, n = 25). Interventions: Nurses in the patchouli group first inhaled patchouli oil at about 10 pm (the end of an afternoon shift) and inhaled patchouli oil a second time at about 10 pm on next day (24-h interval). Nurses in the control group inhaled pure sweet almond oil following the same schedule. Outcome measures: Outcome measured included blood pressure, heart rate, levels of stress, compassion satisfaction, compassion fatigue, and burnout. Results: Although there were no significant differences in blood pressure, heart rate, compassion fatigue, and burnout, levels of stress were significantly lower (0.06 ± 0.48 vs. 1.19 ± 1.19, p < 0.001) and compassion satisfaction significantly higher (0.56 ± 2.50 vs. −2.84 ± 2.43, p < 0.001) in the patchouli than in the control group. In addition, relative to baseline, compassion fatigue was significantly lower in the patchouli group (26.72 ± 4.98 vs. 25.88 ± 4.63, p = 0.016). Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) is shade loving plant and the shade dried leaves are used for essential oil extraction which is used in high-quality perfumery. The present study is aimed to find the effects on the yield and quality of essential oil of patchouli by various drying methods employed with controlled temperature. Fresh plant leaves of the registered variety of Pogostemon cablin 'Jor Lab P-1" were collected for the experimental study. Fresh patchouli herbage was dried under different conditions of direct sunlight exposure(T1), under shade drying condition (T2) and oven drying condition with varying temperature ranges [30°C (T3), 40°C (T4), 50°C (T5) and 60°C (T6)]. The steam distillation process was employed for extracting essential oil from each treated sample. The essential oil yield was found to be lowest in the T1 sample (1.40 %) followed by T2 (1.80 %). The volatile oil content of sample T4 (2.80 %) was found to be the best among the various temperature ranges employed. The exposure of the herbage to a temperature range beyond the optimal temperature of 40°C thus leads to a decrease in essential oil yield. The essential oils of all the treated samples were also analyzed through GC/MS for the different drying methods which yielded that the major component was patchouli alcohol in all the studied essential oil of the different treatments. The highest patchouli alcohol content was present in the T1 essential oil (36.63 %) and the least was recorded in T2 (30.33 %). Thus the standardized methods for drying of patchouli should be employed for efficient and maximum essential oil extraction from the dried leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
