High‐relief glacial valleys shape the modern topography of the Southern Patagonian Andes, but their formation remains poorly understood. Two Miocene plutonic complexes in the Andean retroarc, the Fitz Roy (49°S) and Torres del Paine (51°S) massifs, were emplaced between 16.9–16.4 Ma and 12.6–12.4 Ma, respectively. Subduction of oceanic ridge segments initiated ca. 16 Ma at 54°S, leading to northward opening of a slab window with associated mantle upwelling. The onset of major glaciations caused drastic topographic changes since ca. 7 Ma. To constrain the respective contributions of tectonic‐mantle dynamics and fluvio‐glacial erosion to rock exhumation and landscape evolution, we perform inverse thermal modeling of a new data set of zircon and apatite (U‐Th)/He from the two massifs, complemented by apatite 4He/3He data for Torres del Paine. Our results show rapid rock exhumation recorded only in the Fitz Roy massif between 10 and 8 Ma, which we ascribe to local mantle upwelling forcing surface uplift and intensified erosion around 49°S. Both massifs record a pulse of rock exhumation between 7 and 4 Ma, which we interpret as enhanced erosion during the beginning of Patagonian glaciations. After a period of erosional and tectonic quiescence in the Pliocene, increased rock exhumation since 3–2 Ma is interpreted as the result of alpine glacial valley carving promoted by reinforced glacial‐interglacial cycles. This study highlights that glacial erosion was the main driver to rock exhumation in the Patagonian retroarc since 7 Ma, but that mantle upwelling might be a driving force to rock exhumation as well. Plain Language Summary: The isotopic system (U‐Th)/He in apatite and zircon record the ages in which a rock experiences relatively low temperatures (200–60°C) at shallow crustal depths (6–1 km). We present a new data set of low‐temperature thermochronometers for rocks of the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine mountains in the Southern Patagonian Andes. Fast rock cooling can be forced by intensified surface erosion, and/or tectonic and mantle activity. An episode of fast cooling between 10 and 8 Ma was identified in the Fitz Roy mountains, and mantle upwelling forcing surface uplift, combined with high fluvial erosion may have caused fast rock exhumation. A regional episode of fast rock cooling between 7 and 4 Ma causing 1–3 km of exhumation in the Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine is coincident with the onset of Patagonian glaciations, which would have enhanced erosion and, thus, rock exhumation. An episode of fast rock cooling in the Quaternary is recorded in Torres del Paine rocks, interpreted as enhanced fluvio‐glacial erosion during the Plio‐Pleistocene climate transition toward faster glacial/interglacial cycles. Therefore, we were able to quantify separately the effects of tectonics and climate changes on rock exhumation, what is usually difficult due to simultaneously occurring processes. The compilation of a database of 225 strain/stress tensors (accounting for ~ 4000 fault-striae data pairs) combined with evidence of syntectonic strata, and a seismotectonic appraisal along the Patagonian Andes (39°-50° S; South America), leads us to assess typical features of Mesozoic to current faulting in this segment of the Andean orogen. At the orogen scale, the fault-slip and focal mechanism database show the prevalence of strike-slip faulting, challenging the classic proposal for the Andean orogen of alternating extensional and contractional deformation phases. However, the wrenching tectonism in Cenozoic times may be explained through a strain partitioning model in the North Patagonian Andes by re-activating a large-scale, inherited anisotropy within the basement (namely the Liquiñe-Ofqui fault system), which is currently the locus of significant seismicity. On the other hand, a non-partitioned context allows explaining the Cenozoic patterns of brittle deformation the South Patagonian Andes. Our results highlight that the classifications of Andean-type orogens should integrate both inherited anisotropies and the heterogeneous distribution of strain across the upper plate in order to address complex patterns of deformation. Thermochronologic results from zircon fission track and (U‐Th)/He data collected across the Patagonian batholith, basement and thrust belt of the southern Patagonian Andes between 51°S and 53°S resolves new spatiotemporal patterns of Paleogene rock cooling that allows us to reconstruct deformational and erosional events along‐ and across‐strike. Our study applies a novel modeling strategy, the Path Family Approach, to filter geologically plausible thermal solutions from inverse modeling results for rocks in this study according to a sample's structural and tectonic context. Our results identify minimal cooling and interpreted exhumation of batholith rocks throughout the Paleogene. However, in the western domain we identify synchronous cooling of Jurassic volcaniclastic rocks in the thrust belt both along‐ and across‐strike between 50 and 35 Ma, which we interpret as a period of out‐of‐sequence deformation that coincides with the start of a distinct period of orogenesis in the Fuegian Andes (54°S). This finding may suggest that the southern Patagonian Andes and Fuegian Andes evolved as a connected orogenic system along the bend of the Patagonian orocline. In the central domain, modeled cooling of thermally reset Cretaceous basinal strata from 60 to 50 Ma corresponds to a well‐recognized erosional unconformity in the adjacent Cenozoic foreland depocenter, indicating that contemporaneous exhumation occurred beyond the margins of the basin. Although not diagnostic, exhumation within the orogenic belt, beyond the Cenozoic foreland basin, provides a new regional context to interpret the cause of this regional erosion event. Collectively these results inform the Paleogene tectonic evolution of the orogen. As Sus scrofa is an invasive species in South America, it may have a significant impact on biodiversity. Evaluating this threat requires reliable data, and population density can serve as a critical measure. However, such data is currently lacking for the southern Andes region. To address this gap, we monitored wild boar density in the Villarrica National Park, located in the Andes of south-central Chile. This study area is notable not only for its challenging climatic conditions but also for its endangered Araucaria araucana forest, which provides abundant food resources during autumn seed fall. The density calculated for the entire study period was 1.4 individuals/km 2 , with no significant variation between cold and warm seasons. The encounter rate showed strongly monthly variations. In fragile ecosystems, the introduction of exotic species could alter some ecological processes. The Austral parakeet (Enicognathus ferrugineous) shows close ecological and evolutionary relationships with the Andean Araucaria (Araucaria araucana), so any alteration in these interactions may have negative consequences for both partners and for ecosystem functioning and structure. We conducted extensive roadside surveys to estimate the abundance of parakeets in the northern Patagonian Andes over 4 years and recorded the food plants consumed by foraging flocks. The use of native habitats and humanized areas like villages and farms was influenced by the Araucaria seed crop. In masting years, the large seed crop allowed a massive use of this resource during the non‐breeding season, and even during the breeding season. The exploitation of exotic plants was minor in the masting year, but became predominant in non‐masting years, especially during the non‐breeding season. This feeding switch towards exotic plants primarily arose because the low Araucaria seed crop in non‐masting years is entirely consumed just after production by domestic and wild exotic mammals living in Araucaria forests year‐round, thus forcing the displacement of parakeets towards anthropic habitats to exploit exotic plants. Given the degradation of the remaining Andean Araucaria forests due to the impact of exotic mammals on the ecological interaction between Araucaria and Austral parakeets, ambitious programs to exclude or reduce the density of these alien mammals, including livestock, are warranted. The Southern Patagonian Andes at the latitude of the Chile Triple junction in Argentina and Chile (46°–47.5°S) are the object of an ongoing discussion regarding their orogenic evolution in terms of tectonic crustal thickening and exhumation. Recent works point to an Early Cretaceous onset of shortening according to observations in foreland sequences. The ensuing Cenozoic thermal history of the region was influenced by increased shortening, oceanic‐ridge collision and formation of asthenospheric windows in a dynamic subduction setting. Furthermore, the onset of Patagonian glaciations after 7 Ma added increased complexities to the analysis of the main drivers of crustal cooling in this region. We applied zircon (U‐Th)/He and apatite fission track thermochronometry, and inverse thermal modeling to unravel the thermal history throughout different structural domains of the Patagonian Andes. New thermochronological data and thermal models showed a previously unrecognized set of Cretaceous cooling ages (120‐80 Ma) toward the foreland, that we relate to the onset of contraction during initial tectonic inversion. Toward the hinterland, Cenozoic cooling ages predominate, and are related to Oligocene‐Miocene contraction in response to increased subduction velocities. Based on the regional distribution of thermochronological ages and on results from thermal modeling, a resetting of the zircon (U‐Th)/He and apatite fission track systems in response to crustal heating related to the formation of an asthenospheric window after 16 Ma appears unlikely. After 7 Ma cooling rates increased in response to enhanced glacial erosion. Plain Language Summary: In this work, we have used thermochronometers, basically clocks that start recording time once a rock‐sample has crossed a given temperature in the crust, to track the cooling of rock‐samples from the Patagonian Andes between 46.5°S and 48°S. In this area, several processes influenced the evolution of the landscape such as mountain building, glaciers erosion, and deep‐seated processes within the mantle. All of them may have left a trace in thermochronometers. Our goal is to determine the role of mountain building processes in rock cooling in this area. Our results suggest that rocks cooled in response to mountain building during the Cretaceous in what could be considered the first phase of construction of the Andes in the area. Mountain building processes continued influencing rock cooling during the Miocene, nearly 100 million‐years after the first phase. During the last 7 million‐years before the present, the onset of glacial erosion enhanced rock cooling. Finally, we found no records that the rocks heated in response to deep‐seated mantle processes. Landslide inventories are crucial to studying the dynamics, associated risks, and effects of these geomorphological processes on the evolution of mountainous landscapes. The production of landslide maps is mainly based on manual visual interpretation methods of aerial and satellite images combined with field surveys. In recent times, advances in machine learning methods have made it possible to explore new semi-automated landslide detection methodologies using remotely detected images. In this sense, developing new artificial intelligence models based on Deep Learning (DL) opens up an excellent opportunity to automate this arduous process. Although the Andes mountain range is one of the most geomorphologically active areas on the planet, the few investigations that use DL mainly focus on mountain ranges in Europe and Asia. One of the main reasons is the low density of landslide data available in the Andean areas, making it difficult to experiment with DL models requiring large data volumes. In this work, we seek to narrow the existing gap in the availability of landslide inventories in the area of the Patagonian Andes. In addition, the feasibility and efficiency of DL techniques are studied to develop landslide detection models in the Andes from the generated datasets. To achieve this goal, we generated in a manual process a datasets of 10,000 landslides for northern Chilean Patagonia (42–45°S), being the largest freely accessible landslide datasets in this region. We implement a machine learning model, through DL, to detect landslides in optical images of the Sentinel-2 constellation using a model based on the DeepLabv3+ architecture, a state-of-the-art deep learning network for semantic segmentation. Our results indicate that the algorithm detects landslides with an accuracy of 0.75 at the object level. For its part, the segmentation reaches a precision of 0.86, a recall of 0.74, and an F1-score of 0.79. The correlation of the segmentation measured through the Matthews correlation coefficient shows a value of 0.59, and the geometric similarity of the correctly detected landslides measured through the Jaccard score reaches 0.70. Although the model shows a good response in the testing area, errors are generated that can be explained by geometric and spectral relationships, which should be solved through new training approaches and data sets. Galled leaves are very frequent in southern beech (Nothofagus pumilio) forests. We compared the consumption of leaves (galled and ungalled) by two detritivores and the effect of this consumption on detritivore nutrient content. The amphipod Hyalella curvispina and larvae of the caddisfly Monocosmoecus hyadesi were fed with two diet treatments for 30 days: (1) ungalled leaves and (2) galled leaves. Fungal biomass, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) content were measured in leaves and detritivores, and C:N:P molar ratios were calculated. We hypothesized that galls produce changes in litter nutrient content, affecting invertebrate consumption and nutrient content. Galled leaves had higher N and ergosterol content, and lower C:N ratios than ungalled leaves. Galled leaf consumption was higher than the ungalled for both detritivores. The two species differed in the content of N and C (caddisfly > amphipod) and P (caddisfly < amphipod). The N:P ratio of the amphipods was similar to the ungalled leaf ratio and increased when fed on galled leaves. In contrast, the N:P ratio of the caddisflies was considerably higher than the ungalled leaves and decreased when fed on galled leaves. Galls alter nutrient content in leaves and increase fungal biomass. Both detritivore species were highly homeostatic with regard to C:N ratio, but caddisflies could overcome the limited P content by increasing consumption. We highlight the impact of galls on aquatic detritivores, which in turn are relevant in forested streams for recycling organic matter and cascading effects through brown detritus-based aquatic food webs. The Patagonian Andes have been used to illustrate the dependency of major topographic changes in response to glacial erosion processes dominating over tectonic deformation and uplift. Here, we investigate tectonic and glacial contributors to the erosion history and evolution of topography in the Patagonian Andes at 46.5°S. We present 33 new apatite and zircon (U‐Th)/He (AHe and ZHe, respectively) and fission track (AFT and ZFT, respectively) ages integrated with 46 previously published bedrock thermochronometric ages in a 3D thermo‐kinematic model. Observed thermochronometer ages increase from the eastern flank of the topographic crest of the orogen toward the eastern retro‐foreland basin (from AFT 4–10 Ma, ZHe 4–12 Ma, ZFT 6–14 Ma to AFT 28–32 Ma, ZHe 68–117 Ma). Thermo‐kinematic modeling indicates that spatial gradients in thermochronometric ages can be explained by an up to 100‐km‐wide, parabolic‐shaped pattern in exhumation rates with a maximum rate of 0.5 mm/yr from 15 Ma until the onset of glaciation at ∼7 Ma. Furthermore, model results suggest that the youngest AHe ages require a localized acceleration in erosion from ∼0.5 mm/yr to ∼2.2 mm/yr starting between ∼5 and ∼3 Ma, coeval with intensified glaciation and subduction of the Chile Rise. Our results suggest that the long‐wavelength (∼100 km) topography and erosion patterns are likely controlled by rock uplift above mid‐crustal ramp(s) and subsequent transpression along the Liquiñe‐Ofqui Fault. Superposed on these tectonic processes, Late Cenozoic glaciation resulted in localized and accelerated erosion over wavelengths of <20 km. A number of glaciological observations on debris-covered glaciers around the globe have shown a delayed length and mass adjustment in relation to climate variability, a behavior normally attributed to the ice insulation effect of thick debris layers. Dynamic interactions between debris cover, geometry and surface topography of debris-covered glaciers can nevertheless govern glacier velocities and mass changes over time, with many glaciers exhibiting high thinning rates in spite of thick debris cover. Such interactions are progressively being incorporated into glacier evolution research. In this paper we reconstruct changes in debris-covered area, surface velocities and surface features of three glaciers in the Patagonian Andes over the 1958–2020 period, based on satellite and aerial imagery and Digital Elevation Models. Our results show that debris cover has increased from 40 ± 0.6 to 50 ± 6.7% of the total glacier area since 1958, whilst glacier slope has slightly decreased. Aim: Local effects of ecosystem engineers on biodiversity can scale up to the landscape level, stressing the importance of ecological processes as determinants of species richness at larger spatial scales. In harsh environments, cushion plants often act as ecosystem engineers given their ability to buffer extreme abiotic conditions, thus providing unique and more favorable niches for the establishment of less stress‐tolerant plant species. We assessed if facilitation by cushion plants influences patterns of plant diversity at increasing spatial scales. Location: Northern Patagonian Andes, Argentina. Methods: Based on plant species records within and outside cushions, we compared plant diversity in the presence and absence of cushions at the community, mountain and regional scale. Specifically, observed and estimated numbers of species occurring in either cushion plants or in the surrounding open areas were compared with the species numbers of the open areas. Results: The presence of cushion plants significantly increased species richness at all spatial levels analyzed. At the patch level, a higher number of species was recorded growing within cushion plants than in open area plots of similar size. Consistently, hypothetical communities lacking cushion plants showed significantly lower species richness than observed communities with cushion plants. These differences in species richness at patch and community scales increased with altitude, hence facilitation by cushion plants became more important at higher elevations. Moreover, according to asymptotic non‐parametric estimators, cushion plants could increase overall regional species richness up to 40%. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that about one third of the high‐Andean flora of the region owes its presence to the existence of nursing plants, defying the view that abiotic factors alone are enough to fully determine species occurrences at large spatial scales. The intra‐arc Liquiñe‐Ofqui Fault System (LOFS) is an active transpressive fault zone located in the Patagonian Andes of Chile. In 2007, a seismic sequence occurred in the Aysén Fjord region of Chilean Patagonia along the LOFS, with a Mw 6.2 main earthquake that triggered dozens of landslides, some of which induced tsunami waves that caused severe damage and casualties. Through the analysis of high‐resolution seismic reflection and bathymetric data, we identify six submarine faults cutting the Late Quaternary postglacial sedimentary infill of the fjord. The most conspicuous are the dextral‐normal NE‐SW striking Quitralco fault (QF) and the N‐S striking strike‐slip Río Cuervo (RCF) and Punta Cola faults (PCF). Our paleoseismological analysis reveals at least seven paleolandslide events buried in the fjord sediments that were triggered by local paleoearthquakes, which occurred since local ice sheet retreat, that is, circa 12 kyr. By combining tectonic observations with local seismicity data, we propose a seismotectonic model for the evolution of the 2007 seismic sequence where three structures were progressively activated from the depth toward the upper continental crust, causing surface rupture along the PCF and with earthquakes, suggesting only partial ruptures along other faults. Because the other faults did not rupture to the seafloor they remain important sources of seismic hazard. Thus, the last seismic sequence was a consequence of a stress transfer from the lower‐ductile toward the upper‐brittle continental crust, close to the triple junction of the Nazca, South American, and Antarctica Plates. Our results emphasize on the potential synergies between multiple geological and geophysical methods to assess complex events. Recent studies along strike‐slip faults demonstrate that these phenomena are often not only related to a single fault but instead take place along several faults like was seen in the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake in New Zealand. Using novel high‐resolution seismic reflection imagery and bathymetric data together with the reanalysis of local seismicity, we show (i) multiple active faults in the Aysén Fjord area along the Liquiñe‐Ofqui Fault System in the Patagonian Andes; (ii) several of these faults were activated during the last 2007 seismic sequence and one of them (the Punta Cola fault), ruptured to the surface causing a Mw 6.2 earthquake that generated massive landslides and local tsunami; and (iii) mapping of similar landslides in the fjord sediments demonstrates similar events occurred at least seven times since the last ice sheet retreat in the area, that is, in the last 12,000 yr. This demonstrates the necessity for including the possibility of complex ruptures involving multiple faults regarding seismic hazard assessment along crustal faults, especially for faults near populated areas. Sedimentary provenance techniques have been widely applied in foreland basin settings to understand tectonic and magmatic processes by tracking the exposure and erosion of distinct sediment source areas through time. We present a case example from the Magallanes-Austral retroarc foreland basin of Chile and Argentina (51°30’S), where modal sandstone and conglomerate compositional data, detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology, and sedimentology data from the Oligocene-Miocene Río Guillermo Formation document a change in source areas during an important stage of orogenic development. In particular, our results from the ∼24.3–21.7 Ma Río Guillermo Formation record an abrupt shift from transitional to undissected arc provenance that indicate rejuvenated magmatism within the contemporary arc. Minor components of lithic grains suggest a subordinate source of recycled sediments that we interpret may have been derived from the intervening external fold-and-thrust belt, rather than directly from sources in the hinterland thrust domain. Detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology data show mostly Neogene (∼20–40 Ma) and Cretaceous (∼70–110 Ma) age groups, with minor amounts of Jurassic (∼145–155 Ma), and Paleozoic (∼260–540 Ma) age groups, which are consistent with a syndepositional arc and recycled external fold-and-thrust belt sources. Stratigraphic data suggest a vegetated, channelized braidplain environment developed above an erosional unconformity with the underlying shallow-marine Río Turbio Formation. Upsection, the Río Guillermo Formation locally transitions to a low-energy, organic-rich floodplain setting located within the upper reaches of a fluvial-tidal transition zone of the coastal plain, and the uppermost part of the formation is characterized by a coarse-grained sandy channelized braidplain environment along the foreland basin margin. Moderate sediment accumulation rates and coastal plain progradation during this period is consistent with sustained sediment flux from the Patagonian Andes and tectonic subsidence along the basin margin. Taken collectively, we propose that the abrupt provenance shift dominantly records erosion of the rejuvenated mafic volcanic arc, despite coeval changes in orogenic wedge dynamics brought about by increased plate convergence rates that drove uplift of the intervening external-fold-and-thrust belt along reactivated deep-seated high-angle basin structures.

A full understanding of glacier changes in the Patagonian Andes over decadal to century time-scales is presently limited by a lack of detailed and appropriate long-term observations. Here, we present geodetic mass and area changes of three valley glaciers from Monte San Lorenzo derived from stereo aerial photos, the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) and satellite imagery (SPOT5 and Pleiades) spanning four periods from 1958 to 2018. Our results indicate that net mass balance was negative throughout the six decades, with a mean mass loss of −1.35 ± 0.08 m w.e. a–1 and a total glacier area loss of 14.2 ± 0.7 km2 (23 ± 1% or 0.40 ± 0.02% a–1). The period 1981–2000 had the most negative mass budget, with an area-averaged mass loss of 1.67 ± 0.11 m w.e. a–1 and a maximum loss of −2.23 ± 0.07 m w.e. a–1 at San Lorenzo Sur glacier. Over the periods of 2000–2012 and 2012–2018, the mass budget of these three glaciers remained virtually unchanged at −1.37 ± 0.06 and −1.36 ± 0.17 m w.e. a–1, respectively. To place these results into a broader geographical context, the mass balance of a further 15 glaciers from around the Monte San Lorenzo massif was determined from 2000 onwards. This wider analysis reveals a period of reduced mass loss of −0.13 ± 0.21 m w.e. a–1 from 2012 to 2018 after a period of enhanced mass loss of −0.31 ± 0.16 m w.e. a–1 between 2000 and 2012. We find that increasing air temperatures coupled with diminishing precipitation across the region explains the observed patterns and are the main drivers of the negative mass budget. Furthermore, increased calving and melting into recently formed proglacial lakes has further enhanced mass loss at some lake-terminating glaciers.

The Southern Patagonian Andes (SPA) between 47°–48°S are characterized by relatively high elevations (1500–4000 m) and a 200-km-wide, largely exhumed, basement domain along the backbone of the Cordillera, bounded by a narrow 30-km-wide fold and thrust-belt to the east. The tectonic evolution of the SPA includes widespread Jurassic extension during the opening of the Austral-Magallanes basin and the Rocas Verdes back-arc oceanic basin (RVB), followed by Cretaceous to Cenozoic shortening. Although the main phases of deformation that affected this Andean segment have been the focus of previous studies, its finite geometry and step by step structural and kinematic evolution have not been quantitatively determined. In this work, we present kinematically restored cross sections, showing the variable geometry, trough time, of the eastern basement domain and the fold and thrust-belt. A regional westward-dipping listric decollement, interpreted as formed during the Jurassic extensional event, was reactivated during the Andean deformation constituting the main detachment surface of basement structures and the fold and thrust belt. West verging faults systems are considered a consequence of inversion of north-south trending extensional features as passive roof high-angle west-vergent faults. Using regional data such as field relations, unconformities, and existing ages to differentiate deformational stages, three main phases of contractional deformation are proposed for the area, starting with an Aptian - Cenomanian? phase related to inversion of the extensional depocenter in inmediate response to the closure of northernmost RVB. A second, Miocene phase responsible for most of the shortening occurred between 18 Ma and 10 Ma. Finally, the onset of glaciations and glacial erosion might have triggered out-of-sequence thrusting in the interior of the orogen after 7 Ma. • We conducted detailed geological mapping that led to the generation of two geological maps and three cross-sections of the Southern Patagonian Andes. • Kinematic retrodeformation of the cross-sections demonstrated that geometries and sequence of contractional deformation proposed are plausible. • Extensional stage Austral/Magallanes basin structures were inverted during Andean deformation. • Deformation may have started as early as the Aptian-Cenomanian prior to the complete inversion of Rocas Verdes Basin to the south. • Major contraction seems to have taken place between 18 and 10 Ma with duplex generation. Abstract Southern Patagonia is a prime example of ongoing oceanic ridge collision and slab-window formation sustained over several million years. The impact of these phenomena on the thermal structure and exhumation of the crust have been mainly assessed with low-temperature thermochronology of bedrock samples. Here, we infer thermal histories from new and existing thermochronological data from the region of most recent ridge collision. In particular, we evaluate the potential far-reaching thermal effects of the evolving slab window, which have previously been considered responsible for patterns of late Miocene reheating associated with back-arc alkaline volcanism. Our model results define protracted cooling since ∼15 Ma and stepwise exhumation since the late Miocene. The pattern of stepwise exhumation closely matches the onset of Patagonian glaciation at 7 Ma and the successive pulse of glacial incision coeval with neotectonic activity since 3–4 Ma that are also documented by independent geological and geomorphological evidence in the region. Importantly, our findings challenge the recently suggested lack of glacial erosion and incision since 5 Ma in this region. Furthermore, in contrast to previous modelling studies, we find that the available data do not evidence a previously proposed northward-propagating heating event associated with alkaline volcanism. We hypothesize that the anomalous alkaline volcanism in the Patagonian back-arc might be related to trench-orthogonal tears aligned with transform faults in the subducting plate. Abstract Desertification of Central Patagonia began between ~14–12 Ma and therefore was not directly connected to the opening of the Drake Passage and initial conformation of the Antarctica ice cap in early Miocene times. Local processes, in particular the uplift of the Southern Andes, seem to have played a major role in climatic and biotic changes. We studied synorogenic strata filling a partly cannibalized foredeep between ~45° and 47°S at the latitudes of the Chile triple juction. Older synorogenic successions have yielded 18.7–16.4 Ma (U-Pb) in the western sector of the North Patagonian Cordillera corresponding to Meseta Guadal, Jeinemeni and Alto de Río Cisnes sections. This uplift was partly contemporaneous with broken foreland deformation associated with the San Bernardo fold belt to the east at 17.7–15 Ma. Younger synorogenic successions of 13.5 Ma (U-Pb), associated with a short pulse of major uplift that gave way to deposition of a thick conglomeratic succession, and subsequently finer-grained deposits of 12.3 Ma, are on the eastern Andean front in the Chalía and Guenguell sections, implying a retraction in orogenic activity, and out-of-sequence growth of the Patagonian Cordillera. Consequently, contractional deformation in this area ended after ~12 Ma, sealed by the extrusion of extensive alkali flood basalts, indicating that Neogene shortening only lasted ~6 My, ending around 6 My before the subduction of the Chile Ridge at the latitudes of Central Patagonia and 4.5 My before subduction at the southern tip of South America. Abstract: In southern Patagonia, outcrops of the Upper Cretaceous Cerro Toro Formation preserve a >150 km long deep‐water axial channel belt in the Magallanes–Austral Basin, providing a unique opportunity to investigate longitudinal variations in the depositional characteristics of a deep‐water channel system. This study documents sedimentological, stratigraphical and geochronological data from the Cerro Toro Formation in the Argentine sector of the basin. New results are integrated with previous work from the Chilean basin sector to conduct a basin‐scale comparison of the timing of deposition, provenance and lithofacies proportions. The Cerro Toro channel belt includes a nearly 1000 m thick section characterized by high‐density turbidites and mass‐wasting deposits. Two ash beds from the base of the section yield U–Pb zircon ages of 90·4 ± 2 Ma and 88·0 ± 3 Ma, indicating similar initiation ages as documented in the Chilean sector. The U–Pb detrital zircon age spectra from samples in the study area reveal similar provenance trends to samples from the Chilean basin sector, with peak age populations at 310 to 260 Ma, 160 to 135 Ma and 110 to 82 Ma. The maximum depositional age of the channel belt in the Argentine sector is 87·8 ± 1·5 Ma and all new geochronology data corroborate an 86 to 80 Ma depositional age for the main Cerro Toro channel belt. Statistical analyses of 7370 beds from nearly 8000 m of new and previously published stratigraphic sections along the entire outcrop belt suggest progressive variations in the down‐system proportion of lithofacies. In the up‐slope region, lithofacies representing mass wasting processes (for example, debris‐flow and mass‐transport deposits) account for ca 29% of the stratigraphic thickness, as opposed to 5% in the down‐slope region of the channel belt, where turbidity current deposits are more prevalent. The proportion of beds >1 m thick also decreases systematically down slope, particularly for conglomeratic turbidite deposits. This work highlights that: (i) the proportion of thick beds and distribution of lithofacies are key down‐system changes in the stratigraphic fill of this deep‐water channel belt; (ii) detrital zircon trends suggest a relatively well‐mixed longitudinal depositional system; and (iii) geochronology of the main Cerro Toro outcrop belt supports but does not necessitate the model of a single, roughly age‐equivalent, channel system. This study has implications for understanding the downslope variability in depositional processes, stratigraphic architecture and reservoir quality of submarine channel systems. Sedimentologic studies together with preliminary anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analysis were carried out in a very particular and intriguing Lower Cretaceous depocenter in the northern Austral-Magallanes basin, in order to elucidate its geodynamic setting. Aptian-Albian regressive sequences from the coastal Río Belgrano Formation and the fluvial conglomerates of Río Tarde Formation prograded into the regionally distributed marine sequence from Río Mayer Formation. This "early" progradation of continental environments is a characteristic of the northern sector of the basin, since marine conditions prevailed up to Campanian times towards the south. The tectonic context indicates a sudden passage from a marine to a deltaic and continental river system occurred during the uplift of the Northern Patagonian Andes and extra-Andean Patagonia. Our sedimentologic observations suggest a Barremian to Aptian regression, probably driven by the generalized uplift of surrounding blocks. AMS data indicates that a tectonic overprint of the original magnetic fabric was likely the product of E-W shortening applied soon after deposition, representing one of the earliest evidences of Andean deformation. Although the sedimentary setting was broadly placed in the retro-arc, our data helps to place the specific tectonic environment of the depocenter that is still little known and open to debate. The origin, extent, and timing of intraplate contraction in Patagonia are among the least understood geological processes of southern South America. Particularly, the intraplate Deseado fold‐thrust belt (FTB), located in the Patagonian broken foreland (47°–48°30′S), is one of the most enigmatic areas. In this belt, time constraints on tectonic events are limited and synorogenic deposits have not been documented so far. Furthermore, the driving mechanism for intraplate contraction remains unknown. In this study, we carried out a structural and sedimentological analysis. We report the first syntectonic deposits in this area in the Baqueró (Aptian) and Chubut (Cenomanian/Campanian) groups and a newly found unit referred to as the Albian beds (109.9 ± 1.5 Ma). Thus, several contractional stages in late Aptian, Albian, and Cenomanian‐Campanian are then inferred. We suggest that the Deseado FTB constituted the southernmost expression of the early Patagonian broken foreland in Cretaceous times. Additionally, we analyzed the spatiotemporal magmatic arc behavior as a proxy of dynamic changes in the Andean subduction during determined stages of intraplate contraction. We observe a significant arc broadening from ~121 to 82 Myr and magmatic quiescence after ~67 Ma. This is interpreted as a slab shallowing to flattening process. Far‐field tectonic forces would have been produced by increased plate coupling linked to the slab flattening as indirectly indicated by the correlation between Cretaceous arc expansion and intraplate contraction. Finally, the tectonic evolution of the Deseado FTB favors studies supporting inception of Andean shortening since Cretaceous times. Mid-Cenozoic widespread arc magmatism in North Patagonia extends from the forearc to the retroarc zones, representing an anomalous large volume when compared to the present-day arc zone and even other past arc configurations. It represents a crucial stage in Andean arc evolution as was developed after a period of arc waning and within plate magmatism. Controversies exist regarding the origin of these volcanic sequences, with scarce integrated field, geochemical and geochronological analyses. We focused our study on the El Maitén Belt, located in the present-day retroarc zone, particularly on a poorly studied section corresponding to the southern outcrops of this volcanic belt. This volcanism consists of basaltic and andesitic lava flows and interbedded pyroclastic deposits, whose emplacement was controlled by extensional tectonics as indicated by the occurrence of wedge-like strata associated with normal faults. A U-Pb age on the basal part of this section shows that magmatic activity started by 37 Ma, earlier than previous studies that considered this volcanism as Oligocene. Geochemically, these rocks are part of the subalkaline and particularly tholeiitic series. All samples show trace element enrichments, depletions and ratios characteristic of arc magmas, though fluids and sediment imprint seem limited. On these bases, we propose decompression melting as the main process associated with the genesis of this volcanism. Therefore, this magmatic association constrained to the late Eocene represents the earliest evidence of arc volcanism in the Patagonian Andes, under an extensional regime, after a Paleogene waning of arc activity. The extent of the Pleistocene glaciations in the Patagonian Channel region (southwesternmost South America) and their impact on the vegetation there are largely unknown. Whether the regional flora was wiped out completely ( tabula rasa) or survived in ice-free pockets (in situ survival) is still an open question. The molecular imprint of either scenario should still be visible in extant populations. Therefore, DNA sequence data of Oreobolus obtusangulus Gaudich. (Cyperaceae) were analysed. This species is an abundant constituent of Patagonian cushion peat bogs, one of the Patagonian Channel region's major vegetation types. Three hundred and eighty-four individuals from 48 populations were sequenced for two chloroplast ( ycf3- psaA and trnQUUG- psbK intergenic spacers) and 14 nuclear loci containing simple sequence repeats (SSRs; microsatellites). Phylogenetic reconstructions and the geographic distribution of genetic diversity revealed that the species was split into three main lineages whose general distributions comprise three separate major regions, that is, south-central Chile, Fuego-Patagonia and the East Patagonian Andes, which probably constitute glacial refugia. Postglacial migration fronts formed a suture zone with high levels of genetic diversity in the Northwest Patagonian Andes, where remnants of a supposedly ancestral lineage were also found to be locally restricted to a single population (Huinay). The heavily glaciated Patagonian Channels were likely recolonized from the northwest, and partly from the south. Although the westernmost Patagonian Channel population (Estero Bachem) harboured private SSR alleles (singletons) and showed slightly elevated genetic diversity, it remained unclear whether this population actually survived in situ. Earthquakes can deeply shape the mountainous landscape through co-seismic landslides, generating large amounts of sediment that are then transported and distributed by rivers, controlling the landscape evolution. This influence is observed in the Liquiñe-Ofqui Fault System (LOFS), an active intra-arc fault system extending hundreds of kilometers through the Andes in Chilean Patagonia. For example, on April 21, 2007, a 6.2 Mw earthquake in the Aysén Fjord triggered over 500 landslides with volumes reaching 12–20 Mm3. Although there is a well-defined recurrence time, no study has focused on the effects of co-seismic landslides and sedimentary dynamics on the evolution of this mountainous landscape. In this research, we seek to improve the long-term understanding of the interaction between landslides and fluvial incisions in this segment of the Andes. For this reason, we implemented the HyLands landscape evolution model to simulate landslide activity coupled to fluvial incision. We consider the landslides that occurred during the 2007 earthquake as a precedent and simulate nine scenarios of ten seismic cycles over 21,000 years based on the 2100-year recurrence time documented in this region for the Holocene. We further used multiple uplift rates, sediment erodibility, drainage area, and channel slope exponent ratios (m/n) associated with the stream power law to assess the parameterization's impact on the landscape. According to our results, earthquake-induced landslides are a fundamental mechanism in the landscape's evolution in this region. Deposits from landslides can create transitory landscape forms that can intervene in fluvial dynamics. A significant part of the landslide sediment can remain on the slopes for thousands of years. We identified that parameterization considerably impacts the evolutionary response of the landscape in the evaluated time scale. Low m/n ratios can generate a different evolutionary response than other scenarios because the slopes are constantly driven towards their threshold angle, intensifying the interaction between landslides and fluvial incisions. Based on our analysis and considering the seismic history of the Aysén Fjord, we can explain a critical primary control of the LOFS on landscape erosion and sediment production. Implementing a hybrid landscape evolution model can help to infer the contribution of sediments associated with large earthquakes and improve the understanding of the role of landslides in the evolutionary history of Andean Patagonia. However, we stress that it is essential to advance in capturing erodibility and incision parameters of the stream power law in the Andes and local geomechanical information. The Liquiñe-Ofqui fault zone (LOFZ) in the Patagonian Andes is an active major transpressional intra-arc fault system along which Quaternary faulting and volcanism develop. Subaerial and submarine geomorphologic and structural characterization of latest Pleistocene-Holocene faults and monogenetic volcanoes allows us to assess geological cartography of active faults and the kinematic model for recent tectonics during postglacial times, since 12,000 cal. years BP. This allows increasing the basic geological knowledge necessary for determining the seismic hazard associated with cortical structures in the Aysén region in southern Chile. Fault cartography and field observations suggest dominant dextral-reverse strike slip along north-south and locally NNW-striking faults, dextral-normal strike slip along NE to NNE- striking faults, and sinistral strike slip along east-west faults. This kinematics is consistent with regional SW-NE shortening in the context of a major transpressional fault zone. Holocene and even historic monogenetic and sub-aquatic volcanism occurred in this tectonic setting in a close spatial relationship and probably favored by the activity and local architecture of faults. Submarine fault scarps and deformed sediments observed at the bottom of the Aysén Fjord were associated with the destructive April 2007 Mw6.2 earthquake located along the LOFZ. Our observations show that this earthquake occurred along dextral 15-20 km long N-S structure named Punta Cola Fault (PCF). This fault system is located some kilometres to the east of the main N-S Río Cuervo Fault (RCF). Most of the epicentres of the seismic swarm during 2007 were located along or in between both structures. The study area is a transference zone between N-S regional branches of the LOFZ. The cartography of fault segments proposed here together with geophysical and geologic data suggest that large earthquakes Mw6.2-6.5 can be typically expected along most of the active faults. Besides, seismic hazard assessment should also consider the possibility of earthquake magnitude in the order of 7.1 along the main fault systems like the RCF.La Zona de Falla Liquiñe-Ofqui es un sistema de intraarco activo y paralelo al contacto entre las placas tectónicas de Nazca y Sudamérica, a lo largo del cual el fallamiento y el volcanismo cuaternarios están estrechamente asociados. A partir de observaciones geomorfológicas y estructurales subaéreas, la prospección subacuática de fallas con evidencia de actividad pleistocena tardía-holocena y la caracterización de volcanes monogenéticos, se propone una cartografía y un modelo cinemático para la tectónica reciente, con énfasis en los últimos 12.000 años, asociada a fallas activas en el área del Fiordo Aysén. Esto permite incrementar sustancialmente el conocimiento geológico básico necesario para la determinación del peligro sísmico asociado a estructuras corticales en la región de Aysén de la Patagonia del sur de Chile. La cartografía de fallas junto con observaciones de campo y resultados geocronológicos sugieren que la deformación ocurre dominantemente a lo largo de estructuras de rumbo dextral-inversa de orientación norte-sur y localmente NNW-SSE, junto con fallas dextral-normal de rumbo NE a NNE y en menor medida a lo largo de fallas sinistrales de rumbo este-oeste. Es posible asociar esta cinemática a un acortamiento regional de orientación NE-SW. El volcanismo monogenético y subacuático holoceno ha ocurrido bajo este régimen tectónico, posiblemente favorecido por la geometría, estructura y cinemática de las fallas activas. Escarpes submarinos bien preservados de fallas que deforman sedimentos del fondo del fiordo Aysén fueron asociados con el terremoto de abril del año 2007, de magnitud Mw6,2, ocurrido a lo largo de la Zona de Falla Liquiñe-Ofqui. Observaciones realizadas en este estudio muestran que este terremoto ocurrió a lo largo de una falla de 15-20 km de largo de orientación norte-sur denominada Falla Punta Cola (FPC). Este sistema se localiza unos kilómetros al este de un sistema mayor de orientación norte-sur denominado Falla Río Cuervo (FRC). La mayoría de los epicentros de los terremotos y temblores durante la crisis sísmica del año 2007 ocurrieron entre estas estructuras o a lo largo de ellas. El área de estudio es una zona de transferencia entre sistemas regionales de orientación N-S de la Zona de Falla Liquiñe-Ofqui. La cartografía de segmentos de falla junto con datos geológicos y antecedentes geofísicos sugiere que terremotos de magnitud del orden de Mw6,2-6,5 son típicamente esperables a lo largo de la mayoría de los sistemas activos descritos en este trabajo. Además de esto, en los sistemas principales como a lo largo de la FRC, es posible esperar terremotos de magnitud del orden de Mw7,1, lo cual debería ser considerado en la evaluación del peligro sísmico de la región.

Las avalanchas de nieve representan un importante riesgo natural en diversas regiones montañosas alrededor del mundo. Daños a infraestructura y pérdidas de vidas humanas son reportados frecuentemente en relación a eventos catastróficos de avalanchas. En los Andes, numerosas obras de infraestructura se ubican en zonas vecinas a senderos de avalanchas, de las que poco se conoce sobre sus alcances máximos, periodos de retorno y presiones de impacto. A través de la implementación de técnicas dendrocronológicas hemos reconstruido las fechas de ocurrencia y áreas de influencia de eventos pasados de avalanchas de nieve. Ejemplares de Nothofagus pumilio con perturbaciones visibles de avalanchas fueron muestreados en sectores del canal, bordes y zonas de frenado de 11 senderos de avalanchas ubicados en Loma de las Pizarras, próximo a El Chaltén, Santa Cruz, Argentina. Además, áreas de control fueron muestreadas para determinar las condiciones de crecimiento en árboles no afectados por avalanchas. Nuestros análisis indican que las cicatrices, las variaciones de excentricidad en el leño, los cambios abruptos de crecimiento y la presencia de leño de tensión son los principales indicadores dendrocronológicos en N. pumilio asociados a la ocurrencia de avalanchas. Basados en una ponderación cuantitativa de los indicadores y en la profundidad de muestreo, calculamos un índice de ocurrencia de eventos, el cual nos permitió determinar para cada sendero los años con ocurrencia de avalanchas. Considerando de manera integral la actividad de avalanchas en los 11 senderos muestreados, los años con mayor ocurrencia de eventos fueron 1936, 1966, 1978 y 1995. Complementariamente, registros climáticos fueron analizados con el objetivo de determinar las relaciones entre los años con ocurrencia de avalanchas y las variaciones mensuales de precipitación y temperatura. Se observa que los años con gran frecuencia de avalanchas están significativamente correlacionados con la ocurrencia de abundantes precipitaciones invernales; no se detectaron relaciones significativas con las variaciones de temperatura. Los resultados alcanzados en esta investigación prueban el potencial dendrocronológico de N. pumilio para reconstruir patrones espaciales y temporales de avalanchas de nieve en los Andes patagónicos.

El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar las relaciones entre las variaciones en el clima y en la concentración de C0(2) durante el siglo XX con el crecimiento radial y la eficiencia en el uso del agua en los bosques de Nothofagus pumilio a lo largo de un gradiente altitudinal, en El Chaltén (49°22' S), Santa Cruz, Argentina. Se empleó una combinación de técnicas dendrocronológicas e isotópicas. Los patrones de crecimiento radial a lo largo del gradiente altitudinal reflejan las tendencias climáticas registradas en la zona durante el siglo XX. El crecimiento de los árboles ubicados en el límite superior muestra una tendencia positiva en respuesta al incremento regional de las temperaturas. Por el contrario, los bosques en contacto con la estepa patagónica presentan, en respuesta a una intensificación del déficit hídrico, una tendencia negativa de crecimiento durante el siglo pasado. Los árboles creciendo en bosques mésicos ubicados en alturas intermedias muestran una tendencia levemente negativa no significativa. Los valores de 6(13)C reflejan en qué medida el contenido de humedad en el suelo regula en forma diferencial los procesos de conductancia estomática y tasa fotosintética a lo largo del gradiente altitudinal. En sitios donde el déficit hídrico varía desde leve a muy marcado, la eficiencia intrínseca en el uso del agua (EIUA) parece estar influenciada por la disponibilidad de agua en el suelo. La relación entre la EIUA y las variables climáticas es más clara en sitios con reducido estrés hídrico. En sitios secos, el estrés hídrico muy marcado reduciría la tasa fotosintética en grado tal que el crecimiento no podría ser compensado por el aumento en EIUA. En contraste con el concepto tradicional en dendrocronología que postula una relación más estrecha entre el crecimiento radial y las variaciones climáticas en los bosques ecotonales, los valores isotópicos de 6(13)C representan más claramente las variaciones de la disponibilidad hídrica en sitios mésicos.Influences of climate and C0(2) concentration variations during the last century on radial growth and water-use efficiency oí Nothofagus pumilio were evaluated along an altitudinal gradient in El Chaltén (49°22' S), Santa Cruz, Argentina. We used a combination of dendrochronological and isotopic techniques. Tree growth in the upper treeline shows a positive trend concurrent with increasing regional temperatures. In contrast, due to a gradual increase in water déficits, the rate of radial growth in the xeric forest-steppe ecotone has decreased in the past 100 years. Intermediate-elevation trees from mesic forests show a weak, non-significant negative trend in radial growth during the same interval. 6(13)C reflects soil moisture variations with elevation and its differential influence on stomatal conductance and photosynthetic rate processes. In sites with reduced to severe water déficits, the intrinsic water-use efficiency (IWUE) appears to be influenced by the amount of water in the soil. However, the relationship between IWUE and climate is more obvious in sites with reduced water stress. In drier sites, the photosynthetic rate is severely limited by water déficits so that the reduction in radial growth is not compensated by the increase in IWUE. In contrast with the traditional assumption in dendrochronology indicating that the strong relationships between radial growth and climate are recorded at the forest ecotones, the variations in 6(13)C better reflect water déficits at intermedíate mesic forests.

Rift and post-rift sections of the Austral Basin in the Southern Patagonian fold and thrust belt were examined in outcrop and in 2D seismic reflection sections to evaluate geometric and kinematic aspects of the extension and subsequent inversion. The syn-rift section is composed of dacitic lava flows of the El Quemado Complex (Jurassic), the lowermost unit of the basin. The coastal sandstones of the Springhill Formation (Tithonian-Berriasian) and marine shales of the Río Mayer Formation (Berriasian-Albian) are thought to be sag units. However, field data suggest that these units are also part of the syn-rift successions, as evidenced by extensional growth strata in the lower levels of the Río Mayer Formation. A dacitic flow that is texturally and compositionally similar to those of the syn-rift phase and that is termed here the Río Guanaco dacite is interfingered with the basal strata of the Río Mayer Formation and has a U-Pb zircon crystallization age of c. 141 Ma (Berriasian). The outcropping section was inverted by compression in the early Miocene, according to structural and isotopic data of adjacent areas, producing a broad anticline with inverted and fossil extensional faults as well as newly generated thrusts. At the seismic scale, most of the extensional master faults present negligible reverse slip, and shortening was accommodated in hanging wall push-up structures. This situation is interpreted as a result of the competent metamorphic basement and volcanic syn-rift section, inducing frictional lock-up of the master faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Apatite thermochronometry and synthetic maps of ages and rates for thermochronometric data are used to estimate the timing of incision of valley relief in the Andes. Central Patagonia offers a unique location to study the feedbacks between long-term climate, topography, and erosion due to the high relief and well-resolved mid-latitude glacial history. New apatite (U–Th)/He ages from two vertical transects and two 4 He/ 3 He release spectra in the fjord network around 47°S reveal fast cooling (15–30 °C/Ma) from ∼10 to 5 Ma. Samples currently at the surface cooled below ∼35 °C by ∼5 Ma, indicating slow cooling and little erosion in those regions since 5 Ma. We show that these very low-temperature thermochronometric data are useful indicators of changes in topography, and insensitive to deep thermal processes, such as migration of the Chile triple junction. Map-based predictions of the thermochronometric signatures of disparate topographic scenarios show the distribution of sample data necessary to resolve the timing of relief change. Comparisons to predicted cooling ages and rates indicate that our new apatite He data are most consistent with a pulse of early glacial incision, with much of the observed valley relief in Patagonia carved between 10 and 5 Ma. Early onset of glaciation in Patagonia is supported by glacial till with bracketing ages of 7.4 and 5 Ma. We therefore conclude that the observed thermochronometric signal of fast cooling from 10 to 5 Ma is likely due to an increase in valley relief coinciding with these early glaciations in the Andes. In other glaciated areas at lower latitudes, studies have found a dramatic increase in valley relief at ∼1 Ma. This timing has generated the idea that incision of glacial valleys may be related to the mid-Pleistocene transition, when the global glacial cycle changed from 40 to 100 ka periods. The subduction of bathymetric anomalies at convergent margins can profoundly affect subduction dynamics, magmatism, and the structural and geomorphic evolution of the overriding plate. The Northern Patagonian Icefield (NPI) is located east of the Chile Triple Junction at ~47°S, where the Chile Rise spreading center collides with South America. This region is characterized by an abrupt increase in summit elevations and relief that has been controversially debated in the context of geodynamic versus glacial erosion effects on topography. Here we present geomorphic, thermochronological, and structural data that document neotectonic activity along hitherto unrecognized faults along the flanks of the NPI. New apatite (U-Th)/He bedrock cooling ages suggest faulting since 2-3 Ma. We infer the northward translation of an ~140 km long fore-arc sliver-the NPI block-results from enhanced partitioning of oblique plate convergence due to the closely spaced collision of three successive segments of the Chile Rise. In this model, greater uplift occurs in the hanging wall of the Exploradores thrust at the northern leading edge of the NPI block, whereas the Cachet and Liquiñe-Ofqui dextral faults decouple the NPI block along its eastern and western flanks, respectively. Localized extension possibly occurs at its southern trailing edge along normal faults associated with margin-parallel extension, tectonic subsidence, and lower elevations along the Andean crest line. Our neotectonic model provides a novel explanation for the abrupt topographic variations inland of the Chile Triple Junction and emphasizes the fundamental effects of local tectonics on exhumation and topographic patterns in this glaciated landscape. Although rock glaciers in the Central and Desert Andes of Argentina and Chile have been previously studied in detail, much less attention has been paid to the occurrence of these permafrost forms in Patagonia. Recently, however, the establishment of the Argentinean Glacier Inventory program, which intends to inventory and monitor all ice masses along the Argentinean Andes, has started a large amount of new geocryological research. The project is designed to provide reliable and worldwide comparable results, supported by well established technical procedures and background information. Presented here is the first rock glacier inventory of the Monte San Lorenzo (Cerro Cochrane) region in the southern Patagonian Andes. A total of 130 intact (9.86 km2) and 47 fossil (1.45 km2) landformswere inventoried using two 2.5m resolution ALOS Panchromatic Remote-sensing Instruments for Stereo Mapping images. Since the Argentinean federal initiative described above legally protects all rock glaciers in the country as water reserves, and due to the little scientific knowledge concerning rock glaciers in the vast majority of the Patagonian Andes, this inventory provides an important basis for political decision-making and opens further geocryological research avenues for the Patagonian region in general. The end of the Early Cretaceous sag stage along the Southern Patagonian Andes is indicated by the sudden appearance of shallow marine to deltaic sandstones on top of deep marine facies. We studied the detrital and volcanic zircon U-Pb geochronology from the coarse-grained deposits represented by the Río Belgrano and Río Tarde formations at the northern end of the Austral or Magallanes basin. The maximum depositional age of the basal green sandstones of Río Belgrano Formation is marked by a ~122Ma age peak. The youngest single zircon of the overlaying lower Río Tarde Formation yields an age of 118 ± 2Ma, however the ~122Ma age peak is equally present. The upper Río Tarde Formation yielded a 112 ± 2Ma U-Pb zircon age for a volcanic tuff. The ~122Ma significant peak and 112 ± 2Ma tuff represent volcanic ash fall coeval with plutonic activity dated between 125 and 110Ma in the North Patagonian Batholith. An abundant detrital Mesozoic population is present in both units, including a 189-170Ma peak corresponding to the V1 Jurassic volcanic stage cropping out in the North Patagonian Massif. However, zircons of 153-157Ma representing the age of Jurassic volcanism along the Patagonian basement domain to the west are scarce. Our data indicate a ~122Ma age for the studied samples, during which the Southern Patagonian Andes received mixed basement and V1 Jurassic volcanic stage detritus. These combined sources are an outstanding characteristic of the North Patagonian and Deseado massifs, in agreement with the previously proposed Aptian uplift and exhumation of Patagonia. The Central Patagonia is characterized by prominent continental deposits that belong to the Cretaceous Chubut Group Basin, whose tectonic setting remains controversial. It has been interpreted as a foreland basin, an extensional basin and even as a sag stage of a rift event. Related deposits outcrop as part of the Patagonian broken foreland, east of the Patagonian Andes. Particulary, the San Bernardo fold and thrust belt, between 42° and 48°S, as the main sector of the broken foreland, constitutes a NNW-trending intraplate belt located 450 km away from the trench. Coincidentally, at these latitudes, 1200 km east of the trench, intraplate deformation has caused tectonic inversion of Mesozoic basins presently located at the Atlantic offshore area. Additionally, at the San Jorge Gulf area this orogenic system interferes with a conspicuous E–W extensional system, transversally disposed to the Andean strike, mainly active between the late Early Cretaceous and late Paleocene. We carried out an integrated analysis from structural, 2-D and 3-D seismic data at the San Bernardo FTB and the adjacent Río Mayo Basin, studying sections of the Chubut Group Basin to unravel the different evolutionary stages. Thus, surface and subsurface evidence of syn-compressional deposition indicate the development of a broken foreland basin related to the formation of the San Bernardo FTB, suggesting an initial growth during the late Early Cretaceous and probably up to the late Paleocene. Our results imply that the Cretaceous compression acted in concert with transversal foreland extension. Hence, we propose a syncontractional rift reactivation of a potential lithospheric anisotropy, triggered by regional contraction. Finally, the origin of compression during this time is discussed in relation to multiple processes that go from high convergence between plates and trenchward motion of South America, collision of mid-ocean ridges, to potential dip changes in the subducted slab, as suggested by arc expansion. The Oligocene to present evolution of the North Patagonian Andes is analyzed linking geological and geophysical data in order to decipher the deformational processes that acted through time and relate them to basin formation processes. Seismic reflection profiles reveal the shallow structure of the retroarc area where contractional structures, associated with Oligocene to early Miocene inverted extensional depocenters, are partially onlapped by early to late Miocene synorogenic deposits. From the construction of five structural cross sections along the retroarc area between 40° and 43°30′ S, constrained by surface, gravity and seismic data, a shortening gradient is observed along Andean strike. The highest shortening of 18.7 km (15.34%) is determined near 41°30′ S coincidentally with maximum mean topographic values on the eastern Andean slope, where basement blocks were uplifted in the orogenic front area, and the deepest and broadest synorogenic depocenters were formed towards the foreland. Additionally, eastward shifting of Miocene calc-alkaline rocks occurred at these latitudes, which is interpreted as indicative of a change in the subduction parameters at this time. Deep crustal retroarc structure is evaluated through inversion of gravity models that made possible to infer Moho attenuated zones. These coincide with the occurrence of younger than 5 Ma within-plate volcanics as well as with crustal thermal anomalies suggested by shallowing of the Curie isotherm calculated from magnetic data. Younger volcanism and thermal anomalies are explained by slab steepening since early Pliocene, after a mild-shallow subduction setting in the middle to late Miocene, age of the main compressive event. Cumulate and crystal mush disruption and reactivation are difficult to recognize in coarse-grained, shallow plutonic rocks. Mafic minerals included in hornblende and zoned plagioclase provide snapshots of early crystallization and cumulate formation, but are difficult to interpret in terms of the dynamics of magma ascent and possible links between silicic and mafic rock emplacement. This study presents the field relations, the microtextures and the mineral chemistry of the Miocene mafic sill complex of the Torres del Paine intrusive complex (Patagonia, Chile) and its subvertical feeder zone. We summarize a number of observations that occur in structurally different, shallow, plutonic rocks, as follows. (1) The mafic sill complex was built up by a succession of braided sills of shoshonitic and high-K calc-alkaline porphyritic hornblende-gabbro and fine-grained monzodiorite sills. Local diapiric structures and felsic magma accumulation between sills indicate limited separation of intercumulus liquid from the mafic sills. Anhedral hornblende cores, with olivine + clinopyroxene ± plagioclase ± apatite inclusions, crystallized at temperatures >900°C and pressures of ∼300 to ∼400 MPa. The corresponding rims and monzodiorite matrix crystallized at <830°C, ∼70 MPa. This abrupt compositional variation suggests stability and instability of hornblende during recycling of the mafic roots of the complex and subsequent decompression. (2) The near lack of intercumulus crystals in the subvertical feeder zone layered gabbronorite and pyroxene–hornblende gabbronorite stocks testifies that melt is more efficiently extracted than in sills, resulting in a cumulate signature in the feeding system. Granitic liquids were extracted at a higher temperature (T >950°C) than estimated from the composition of the granite minimum. We show that hornblende–plagioclase thermobarometry is a useful monitor for the determination of the segregation conditions of granitic magmas from gabbroic crystal mushes, and for monitoring the evolution of shallow crustal magmatic crystallization, decompression and cooling. Tens of Surtseyan tuff cones are exposed in the Río Coichel valley, between Ñireguao and Estancia Baño Nuevo (Southern Chilean Andes). The Early Cretaceous products of the submarine eruptions rest on, or are interbedded with, shallow marine sandstones of the Hauterivian-early Aptian Apeleg Formation. The Early Cretaceous rocks typically contain large amphibole phenocrysts, clinopyroxene and plagioclase, and have compositions that range from relatively primitive basalts to andesites. The basalts are slightly enriched in LREE and incompatible trace elements. They have low Ti-contents and negative anomalies in Nb and Ta, characteristic of subduction-related magmas. Centimetre-sized amphibole megacrysts and an amphibole-bearing clinopyroxenite xenolith have been found in one of the tuff cones located near Estancia Baño Nuevo. The amphibole megacrysts are pargasite (low Si and Ti, high Mg). The xenolith has diopsidic clinopyroxene with abundant inclusions, and pargasite veins enclosing smaller clinopyroxene neoblasts. Geochemical data show that the megacrysts and the xenolith have the same origin and correspond to underplated igneous bodies crystallized at high pressure.

Abstract: The intraplate fault-block mountains and intermontane deposits of the Gastre Basin, which are recorded more than 550km east of the Andean trench in central Patagonia, Argentina, are analyzed. The Gastre Basin is one of the largest Patagonian intermontane basins, limited by uplifted blocks strongly oblique to the Andean chain. It was originated by reverse faulting and inversion of pre-existing normal faults associated with a Mesozoic rift basin and defined by older crustal heterogeneities. The deformational event occurred during the middle Miocene, related to a short contractional episode (16.1–14.86Ma), probably in response to an eastward migration of the Andean fold and thrust belt. During Pliocene to Quaternary times, neither younger fault-block uplifts nor reconfigurations of the basin occurred. Similarities between the study area and other parts of the Patagonian foreland – such as the presence of Miocene reverse or inversion tectonics, as well as the accommodation of the Miocene sedimentary successions – suggest that the Gastre Basin is part of a major late early to middle Miocene broken foreland system (i.e. the Patagonian broken foreland) that exhumed discrete fault-block mountains and generated contemporary basins along more than 950km parallel to the Andean trench (i.e. between 40°00′ and 48°00′ south latitude). Based on recent studies on the southern Andean Margin, this continental-scale contractional episode may be the result of a flat-slab subduction segment. Nevertheless, such a hypothesis is very difficult to support when analyzing such a large flat subduction segment along the entire Patagonian trench. This suggests the need to consider alternative flat-slab trigger mechanisms or other factors in the generation of broken foreland systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
