The accurate identification of the primary tumor origin in metastatic cancer cases is crucial for guiding treatment decisions and improving patient outcomes. Copy number alterations (CNAs) and copy number variation (CNV) have emerged as valuable genomic markers for predicting the origin of metastases. However, current models that predict cancer type based on CNV or CNA suffer from low AUC values. To address this challenge, we employed a cutting-edge neural network approach utilizing a dataset comprising CNA profiles from twenty different cancer types. We developed two workflows: the first evaluated the performance of two deep neural networks—one ReLU-based and the other a 2D convolutional network. In the second workflow, we stratified cancer types based on anatomical and physiological classifications, constructing shallow neural networks to differentiate between cancer types within the same cluster. Both approaches demonstrated high AUC values, with deep neural networks achieving a precision of 60%, suggesting a mathematical relationship between CNV type, location, and cancer type. Our findings highlight the potential of using CNA/CNV to aid pathologists in accurately identifying cancer origins with accessible clinical tests.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychological disorder that is associated with a host of psychosocial and health ailments, including chronic pain. Although evidence-based psychological therapies are recommended as first-line PTSD treatments, a large proportion of individuals either drop out and/or do not achieve a therapeutic response. PTSD is increasingly recognized as a systemic disorder that impacts both physical and mental health, and mind-body approaches, such as Tai Chi, have shown promise. However, to date there have been no randomized clinical trials examining Tai Chi as a treatment for PTSD.Objective: To conduct a fully remote two-phased study designed to adapt, refine, and standardize two group treatments, Tai Chi and a Wellness comparison, for Veterans diagnosed with PTSD and chronic pain.Method: We deploy the project in two phases. In Phase One, we adapt both interventions for delivery via a videoconferencing platform. We then pilot the interventions in a ‘dry run’ with non-random assignment of 12 participants to Tai Chi or a Wellness comparison group. In Phase Two, we randomize 36 participants to one of the two group interventions. The feasibility and acceptability of the two remotely delivered interventions and assessment protocols are evaluated.Conclusions: This is the first study to our knowledge to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, adherence, and participant burden of the Tai Chi and Wellness comparison interventions for PTSD and chronic pain in Veterans. This information will facilitate the development of a future large, randomized control trial to evaluate the efficacy of Tai Chi to address PTSD and chronic pain in Veterans.

The main objective of the publication is to analyze the development of additive manufacturing systems based on the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0, with particular emphasis on the Internet of Everything ideology. In connection with that, the authors have resolved to review the existing devices, and also IT tools, which are applied in manufacturing processses based upon additive technologies. In order to facilitate the analysis in question, three variants were developed; the first, presenting 3D printing as a self-contained manufacturing work station not involving other technologies within the Industry 4.0 conception, the second, indirectly involving 3D printing in the Industry 4.0 conception, and also the third, in which 3D printing constitutes a major and indispensable element of this conception. The contemporary literature of the subject includes dissertations claiming that the fifth industrial revolution may be coming. Taking that into account, this dissertation attempts as well to discuss the evolution of 3D printing in the context of the 5.0 Industry conception, based upon the Internet of Everything, and also Virtual Reality. This part of the article is a forecast of the things to come.

The paper concerns the use of the scale-free networks theory and the power law in designing wireless networks. An approach based on generating random networks as well as on the classic Barabási-Albert algorithm were presented. The paper presents a new approach taking the limited resources for wireless networks into account, such as available bandwidth. In addition, thanks to the introduction of opportunities for dynamic node removal it was possible to realign processes occurring in wireless networks. After introduction of these modifications, the obtained results were analyzed in terms of a power law and the degree distribution of each node.

This paper concerns the modified metrics for MESH wireless networks. This metric is important when a specific data transmission path is being chosen. The parameters regarding the connection quality and overload are introduced in it. Therefore, the proposed metric takes a closer look at changing conditions of the wireless environment and contributes to a better self-organization functioning of this type of network. Its importance increases for networks characterized by the transmission of converged traffic. The paper also presents the results of a simulation showing the dependence of metric values on transmission parameters for selected wireless transmission technologies.

Millions are living in shelters around the world, often for decades. Architects are rarely trained in shelter design and as a result speculative designs are frequently impractical or insensitive to occupants. In addition, aid agency staff can lack engineering or architectural knowledge, so need support during shelter procurement. Evidence gathered by the authors in seven countries over three years revealed poor conditions within many shelters, including condensation, excessive temperatures, lack of privacy and poor air quality, all of which contribute to increased morbidity and mortality. To address this, the paper proposes a design assessment platform, the Shelter Assessment Matrix (SAM), covering 34 issues. SAM also includes guidance documents that allow users to upskill themselves on a range of topics. The tool was tested in three ways: (i) 11 agency staff were asked to assess the same shelter. The mean score was 45.7/100, standard deviation (SD) 2.96. The narrow SD indicated that SAM provided consistent scoring. (ii) 187 previously deployed shelters were evaluated and scored between 27 and 78. This suggests that SAM generates a range of scores, and that shelters could be improved. This evaluation also provides the first contextualised performance analysis of shelters around the world, and a repository for others to judge their designs against. (iii) Use of the platform resulted in considerable measured uplifts in building science and cultural knowledge. SAM has been made freely available online and has been used by agencies to materially improve the design of shelters for thousands of individuals in four countries.

Introduction Poland has the largest shortage of nurses in Europe, as well as a low percentage of male nurses. Information relating to emotional intelligence has been explored to determine whether it predicts the characteristics and outcomes of qualified health professionals during their academic training and practice. Objective This study aimed to measure differences in emotional intelligence between male and female nursing students. Participants and methods In this cross-sectional study, emotional intelligence was measured using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test (SSEIT) in 21 male and 127 female nursing students from John Paul II University in Biała Podlaska, Poland. Results The raw overall scores of emotional intelligence in male and female students were similar. Differences were observed after the conversion of raw scores into normalized (sten) scores. High normalized scores (sten 8–10) of emotional intelligence had every third of male students and only 14.2% of female students. The lowest sten values of emotional intelligence in male and female students were 3 and 1, respectively. Less than 10% of male students and over 20% of female students had low normalized scores (sten ≤3) for emotional intelligence and an isolated ability to recognize emotions (factor II). Conclusions The emotional intelligence expressed in normalized scores was higher in male nursing students than in female nursing students. This evidence may suggest that, at the stage of choosing a field of study, Polish male nursing students self-select for the nursing profession, at least in terms of emotional intelligence. The influx of men into the profession should be considered as a positive trend.

Introduction: Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are the hallmark of many connective tissue disorders (including lupus), which comprise roughly 5% to 10% of chronic debilitating diseases causing morbidity and mortality. In society, fear of these diseases increases illness-related uncertainty because the prognosis of progression is often difficult to determine and at least some symptoms fluctuate unpredictably. In the anti-vaccination movement, the question of the possible connection between vaccination and connective tissue disorders and other autoimmune diseases has grown to rank as an important argument for rejecting vaccination. In 2021, every fifth Polish first-degree nursing student decided to not be vaccinated against COVID-19. Objective: This study aimed to explore the prevalence of antinuclear antibodies in students vaccinated and unvaccinated against COVID-19. Participants and Methods: A single university cross-sectional study was performed in a small academic centre in Poland, where 210 students were recruited in 2022. All the participants were screened for SARS-CoV-2 IgG and antinuclear antibodies. Results: The mean age of the students who rejected vaccination was higher than that of those who were vaccinated. Among nursing students, 30.0% of vaccinated and 58.3% of unvaccinated individuals had COVID-19. The frequency of antinuclear antibodies was 3 times lower in vaccinated students than in unvaccinated students (2/159 vs 2/51; P > .05). Conclusion: The results of our study did not confirm the rationality of rejecting vaccinations against COVID-19 for fear of developing autoimmune diseases among healthy students.

Listeria monocytogenes bacilli are a known cause of non-invasive gastrointestinal listeriosis with diarrhea, less frequently they cause invasive infections: meningitis and encephalitis, bacteremia and its complications: endocarditis, intraocular inflammation of the eye and others. The risk of human infection is mainly associated with consuming food contaminated with these bacteria. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), infections with L. monocytogenes etiology caused the highest hospitalizations and deaths among zoonotic diseases reported in 2022. A report by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported 0.44 cases of listeriosis per 100,000 population in 2021, with the highest incidence rate for people over 64 years old at 1.7.

MALT lymphoma of the dura is a very rare type of low-grade B-cell lymphoma. Little more than 100 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a 43-year-old woman who was referred to hospital because of a series of three tonic-clonic seizures on the day of admission. Neurological examination revealed confusion and aphasia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a contrast-enhanced, broad-based lesion along the dura in the left parieto-occipital area. The suspicion of an en plaque meningioma was raised. The tumour invaded the brain parenchyma with visible extension into the brain sulci. There was a marked brain oedema surrounding the lesion and causing the midline shift 8 mm to the right. After stabilization of neurological condition (intravenous diuretics and steroids), the operation was performed. The diagnosis of dural MALT lymphoma was established. During the pathological examination, it was especially problematic to distinguish MALT lymphoma from follicular lymphoma, but the final diagnosis was MALT lymphoma. Surgical partial removal with additional R-CVP immunochemotherapy (rituximab, cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisone) resulted in complete remission. The follow-up period is 1 year. Our presented case of a MALT lymphoma highlights the fact that surgical partial removal with additional immunochemotherapy is an available option in these rare intracranial tumours.

The article presents the possibilities of automating production pre-processing and post-processing operations for the Material Extrusion - MEX process based on Fused Filament Fabrication technology. Automation is based on hardware and software solutions. For this purpose, a special research station was developed, equipped with a warehouse of working platforms, a 3D printer and a collaborative robot that integrates individual elements of the manufacturing process. The developed solution allows for increasing the efficiency of the manufacturing cell and reducing the operator's involvement in manual operations at the pre-processing and post-processing stages.

Listeriosis is one of the most serious foodborne diseases under surveillance, with an overall mortality rate in the EU currently being high at 18.1%. Therefore, this study aims to investigate Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from clinical and food samples for susceptibility to antimicrobials, presence of virulence factors, and genetic diversity. Species were identified using the MALDI-TOF, resistance to 11 antibiotics was determined according to EUCAST guidelines, and multiplex PCR was used for serotyping and detecting virulence genes. Strains were genotyped using the PFGE method. Clinical strains showed full sensitivity to all tested antibiotics. In total, 33.3% of strains from food products were found to be resistant to ciprofloxacin and 4.2% to tetracycline. Most of the tested isolates (79.2%) belonged to serotype 1/2a-3a, and the rest (20.8%) belonged to serotype 4ab-4b,4d-4e. Five virulence genes (prfA, hlyA, plcB, inlA, and lmo2672) were detected in all strains studied. The llsX gene was the least common, in 37.5% of clinical strains and 18.75% of strains isolated from food products. Among the analyzed strains, 13 strains displayed unique PFGE profiles. The other 11 strains belong to 3 clusters of pulsotypes: cluster 1 (2 strains), cluster 2 (6 strains), and cluster 3 (2 strains). The percentage of hospitalizations and deaths of Polish patients with listeriosis indicates the seriousness of this disease, especially in an aging society, while the molecular testing of clinical strains has been rarely performed, which makes it difficult to determine the source of infection.

Background: we aimed to characterize the financial needs expressed through online crowdfunding for urologic cancers. Methods: the data used in this study came from the online crowdfunding platform GoFundMe.com. Using an automated software method, we extracted data for campaigns related to urologic cancers. Subsequently, four independent investigators reviewed all extracted data on prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancer. We analyzed campaigns’ basic characteristics, goals, fundraising, type of treatment and factors associated with successful campaigns. Results: in total, we identified 2126 individual campaigns, which were related to direct treatment costs (34%), living expenses (17%) or both (48%). Median fundraising amounts were greatest for testicular cancer. Campaigns for both complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) (median $11,000) or CAM alone (median $8527) achieved higher fundraising totals compared with those for conventional treatments alone (median $5362) (p < 0.01). The number of social media shares was independently associated with campaign success and highest quartile of fundraising. Conclusions: using an automated web-based approach, we identified and characterized online crowdfunding for urologic cancer care. These findings indicated a diverse range of patient needs related to urologic care and factors related to campaigns’ success.
