The association of roots with mycorrhizal fungi increases the establishment success of forest species. Cordilleran cypress naturally forms associations with arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM). In general, the use of fertigation and artificial growth methods causes a decrease in mycorrhization, which could lead to a decrease in seedling performance in the field. The objectives of this study were: to determine whether AM colonization occurs in a nursery; to evaluate the influence of differing availability of phosphorus and substrate water status on the level of mycorrhizal colonization during plant growth; and to analyze the abundance of mycorrhization and its relationship with post-planting survival. The trial treatments were only applied during plant growth and consisted of a combination of three phosphorus concentration levels (1, 10 and 100 mg L-1) and two substrate water statuses (20 and 80 % of the container capacity (Cc)). The percentage of mycorrhization (% AM) was evaluated in plants grown in a nursery, in a sterilized substrate in the field, as was its survival in the field. Among the most relevant results, 24 % AM was found in the nursery while this value increased in the field (93 %), indicating that the mycorrhizal colonization process occurs during plant growth, even though it is partially inhibited by phosphorus and water management. It was also observed that the % MA increased once the plant was taken to the field independently of the % MA of the seedling in the nursery., La asociación de raíces con hongos micorrícicos aumenta el prendimiento en la implantación de especies forestales. El ciprés de la cordillera forma naturalmente micorrizas del tipo arbusculares (MA). En general, el uso de fertirriego y medios de crecimiento artificiales provoca una disminución de la micorrización, lo que podría repercutir en una disminución del desempeño a campo del plantín. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron: estudiar si se produce colonización de MA en vivero; evaluar la influencia de distintas disponibilidades de fósforo y estados hídricos del sustrato en el nivel de colonización micorrícica durante la viverización; analizar la abundancia de la micorrización y su relación con la supervivencia post plantación. Los tratamientos de los ensayos solo se aplicaron durante la viverización, y consistieron en la combinación de tres niveles de concentración de fósforo (1, 10 y 100 mg L-1) y dos estados hídricos del sustrato (20 y 80 % de la capacidad de contenedor (Cc). Se evaluó el porcentaje de micorrización (% MA) en plantas cultivadas en vivero, en sustrato esterilizado y en campo, como así también la supervivencia en campo. Entre los resultados más relevantes se encontró un % MA en vivero del 24 % y un aumento de este valor en campo (93 %), mostrando que el proceso de colonización micorrícica se produce durante la viverización, a pesar de que la misma se encuentre inhibida parcialmente por el manejo del fósforo y del agua. También se observó que el % MA aumentó una vez que la planta fue llevada a campo independientemente del % MA que el plantín tenía en el vivero.

Enriching forests with native trees used for their high-value timber could allow productivity and biodiversity conservation goals to be achieved together. In certain Patagonian forests (e.g. low forests composed by resprouting species), this requires an analysis of the degree of canopy opening that guarantees planting success. We evaluated the influence of canopy opening intensity (OI) on the survival and height growth of a plantation of native tree species in three contrasting sites (south slope: SS, north slope: NS, and valley bottom: VB). At each site, we established an OI gradient of 0, 30, 50, and 70 % of initial biomass extraction, and planted Austrocedrus chilensis, Nothofagus dombeyi, N. pumilio, N. antarctica, N. alpina and N. obliqua (monitored for nine years). The optimal OI for average seedling survival was site-dependent; in SS the optimal survival was at intermediate OI (62 - 78 %), while in NS no differences were observed up to 50 % OI (32 %), and in VB plant survival was less than 3 %. N. obliqua and A. chilensis had the highest survival rate (60 % and 97 %, respectively). Annual plant growth varied among sites, with 27 ± 6 cm/year in SS, 10 ± 3 cm yr-1 in NS, and 5 ± 2 cm yr-1 in VB. N. obliqua reached the highest average plant height, with 4.2 ± 2 m in SS and 1.8 ± 1 m in NS. In SS most of the species grew from 18 to 60 % annually. Our results showed that management schemes should be species and site specific. We recommend planting on wetter slopes and initially removing up to 50 % woodland biomass., Una estrategia de manejo forestal que podría combinar exitosamente la producción y la conservación de la biodiversidad en bosques naturales, es su enriquecimiento con árboles nativos de valor maderero. En ciertos bosques de Patagonia (e.g. matorrales) esto requiere definir el grado de apertura inicial del dosel para garantizar el éxito de la plantación. En este trabajo, evaluamos el efecto de la intensidad de apertura (IA) en la supervivencia y crecimiento inicial en altura de plantaciones de especies forestales nativas maderables, en tres sitios contrastantes (ladera sur: LS, ladera norte: LN y fondo de valle de altura: FV) en la provincia de Río Negro, Argentina. En cada sitio establecimos un gradiente de IA: 0, 30, 50 y 70 % de biomasa extraída, en donde plantamos Austrocedrus chilensis, Nothofagus dombeyi, N. pumilio, N. antarctica, N. alpina y N. obliqua y medimos supervivencia y crecimiento durante nueve años. La IA óptima para maximizar la supervivencia promedio de los plantines dependió del sitio; en LS se alcanzó a IA intermedias (62 - 78 %), mientras que en LN no se observaron diferencias hasta 50 % IA (32 %) y en FV fue menor a 3 % en promedio independientemente de IA. N. obliqua y A. chilensis fueron las especies que más sobrevivieron (60 % y 97 % respectivamente). El crecimiento anual varió entre sitios, 27 ± 6 cm año-1 en LS, 10 ± 3 cm año-1 en LN y 5 ± 2 cm/año en FV. N. obliqua alcanzó mayor altura promedio, 4,2 ± 2 m en LS y 1,8 ± 1 m en LN. En LS la mayoría de las especies crecieron de 18 a 60 % en altura anualmente. Nuestros resultados sugieren plantar en laderas húmedas y remover inicialmente hasta un 50 % de biomasa del matorral para lograr un mayor éxito. No obstante, la IA óptima dependerá de la especie y del sitio específico.

The genetic differentiation of six natural Argentine populations of lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) from the Center West of the Province of Chubut (42 ° 50 ‘S) distributed in an altitudinal range of 500 m (between 1,000 and 1,500 m a.s.l.) was studied by means of common garden greenhouse trials. Individual growth curves were fitted in one-year-old seedlings using the Boltzmann equation (non-linear regression). Inter-population variation was analyzed with ANOVA in several parameters of the fitted curves, indicative of the increase and the phenology of the growth process. Significant differences were shown between the upper populations and those of the intermediate and lower altitudinal level for the initiation and duration of the growth period, evidencing an ecotypic variation. Our results point out the relevance of considering the altitude of the seed origin in programs of ecological restoration or commercial plantation with lenga., Se estudió la diferenciación altitudinal de seis poblaciones naturales argentinas de lenga (Nothofagus pumilio) del Centro Oeste de la Provincia de Chubut (42° 50´ S) distribuidas en un rango altitudinal de 500 m (1.000 a 1.500 m s.n.m.) a través de ensayos de ambiente común en invernadero. Los resultados prueban la necesidad de considerar la altitud del origen de las semillas en programas de restauración ecológica o plantación comercial con la especie.

Nitrogen (N) is an element with a high influence in seedling growth in the nursery. Nevertheless, absolute levels of nutrient concentrationare irrelevant if the relationship among the major elements is not examined. In this work we studied the incidence of several Nconcentrations in two proportional relationships with potassium (K), keeping the relationship with phosphate (P) constant (i.e. 3:2:1and 3:2:3 for N:P:K), during the rapid growing phase in the fertigation production of Austrocedrus chilensis seedlings. Seedlingheight, stem diameter at the collar level, total biomass, aboveground/underground biomass ratio (PSA/PSR), nutritional status and rootgrowth potential (RGP) were measured at the end of the growing season. The two treatments combining lower concentration of N witha relationship 3:2:3 produced the highest effect on all morphological parameters assessed. The PSA/PSR was more equilibrated in thetreatments with the relationship 3:2:3. The N concentration in the leaves was proportional to its concentration in the nutrient solution.The P content did not show differences among treatments, whereas the K level was higher for the treatment of lower N concentrationwith relationship 3:2:1. The RGP was low in all treatments. Our observations showed that the 3:2:3 relationship produced largerseedlings with a better balance of biomass partition, evidencing that the management of K in the nutrient solution has higher influencein the seedlings growth of Austrocedrus chilensis., El nitrógeno es uno de los nutrientes más influyentes sobre el crecimiento de los plantines en un vivero. Sin embargo, la concentraciónde cada nutriente carece de importancia si no se la analiza en relación al conjunto de ellos. En este trabajo sobre la producciónbajo fertirriego de plantines de ciprés de la cordillera, se estudió la incidencia de distintos niveles de concentración de nitrógeno(50, 100, 150 y 200 mg L-1) en dos relaciones proporcionales con el potasio, manteniendo invariable la relación con el fósforo(i.e. 3:2:1 y 3:2:3 para N:P:K), durante la etapa de crecimiento rápido. Se evaluaron la altura, el diámetro al cuello del plantín, labiomasa total, la asignación entre la parte aérea y radical (PSA/PSR), el estado nutricional y el potencial de crecimiento radical (PCR).Los tratamientos con menor concentración de nitrógeno y de proporciones 3:2:3 produjeron el mayor incremento en los parámetrosmorfológicos analizados. La PSA/PSR fue más equilibrada en los tratamientos con relación 3:2:3. La concentración foliar de nitrógenofue proporcional a su concentración en la solución nutritiva. La concentración foliar de fósforo no mostró diferencias, mientras quese observó una mayor concentración foliar de potasio en el tratamiento de menor concentración de nitrógeno y relación 3:2:1. El PCRmostró valores bajos en todos los tratamientos. Las observaciones indican que la relación 3:2:3 produjo plantines de mayor tamañoy con asignaciones de biomasa más balanceadas, evidenciando que el manejo del potasio tuvo gran influencia en el crecimiento delciprés de la cordillera en vivero.

Inoculation with microorganisms represents an opportunity to enhance tree production, directly affecting plant growth or survival at planting. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of mixed inoculation with native mycorrhizae, two yeasts and one endophytic bacterium, on the growth of two poplar clones commonly used in Patagonia, Argentina. Yeasts and bacteria were selected base on their ability to produce IAA and siderophores, as well as P solubilization in-vitro. A greenhouse trial was performed using hardwood cuttings of Populus nigra ,Italica, and Populus trichocarpa ,SP1456,. Only yeasts modified growth traits, in a host-related response: Tausonia pullulans reduced the root/shoot ratio in P. nigra, and Candida saitoana and increased shoot dry biomass in P. trichocarpa. All plants presented arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization but ectomycorrhizae were absent. Two types of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization were observed, one of them similar to Glomus tenue. We found a tendency for a higher percentage of arbuscular mycorrhizal colonization when plants were inoculated with T. pullulans. The used of native yeast along with mycorrhizal inocula appears to be a promising tool to improve poplar forestry.
