Abstract

Despite the continuous increase in capacity, lithium-ion intercalation batteries are approaching their performance limits. As a result, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies. The use of a lithium metal anode promises the highest theoretical energy density and enables use of lithium-free or novel high-energy cathodes. However, the lithium metal anode suffers from poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency during cycling, especially in liquid electrolytes. In contrast to solid electrolytes, liquid electrolytes have the advantage of high ionic conductivity and good wetting of the anode, despite the lithium metal volume change during cycling. Rapid capacity fade due to inhomogeneous deposition and dissolution of lithium is the main hindrance to the successful utilization of the lithium metal anode in combination with liquid electrolytes. In this perspective, we discuss how experimental and theoretical insights can provide possible pathways for reversible cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal. Therefore, we discuss improvements in the understanding of lithium metal nucleation, deposition, and stripping on the nanoscale. As the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a key role in the lithium morphology, we discuss how the proper SEI design might allow stable cycling. We highlight recent advances in conventional and (localized) highly concentrated electrolytes in view of their respective SEIs. We also discuss artificial interphases and three-dimensional host frameworks, which show prospects of mitigating morphological instabilities and suppressing large shape change on the electrode level.

Abstract

Cobalt, nickel, manganese and zinc vanadates were synthesized by a hydrometallurgical two-phases method. The extraction of vanadium(V) ions from alkaline solution using Aliquat®336 was followed by the production of metal vanadates through precipitation stripping. Precipitation stripping was carried out using solutions of the corresponding metal ions (Ni(II), Co(II), Mn(II) and Zn(II), 0.05 mol/L in 4 mol/L NaCl), and the addition time of the strip solution was varied (0, 1 and 2 h). The time-dependent experiments showed a notorius influence on the composition, structure, morphology and crystallinity of the two-dimensional vanadate products. Inspired by these findings, we selected two metallic vanadate products and studied their properties as alternative cathode materials for nonaqueous sodium and lithium metal batteries.

Changes from baseline (T0) to 6-month follow-up (T1) were evaluated using paired t-test and signed rank test.Results: A total of 190 patients switched from TDF to TAF and had one 6-month follow-up visit. They were 80% male, 74.2% at CDC stage A–B, 93.7% with undetectable HIV-viral load. Mean age was 46.7± 10.7 years, body mass index was 25.0± 3.9 kg/m2, median CD4 cell count was 634 cell/μL (interquartile range [IQR]=439– 900), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) was 23 (IQR=19– 30) IU/L, and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) was 24 (IQR=17– 34) IU/L. At T1, both AST (median=− 1, IQR=− 5– 2 IU/L, P=0.004) and ALT (median=− 2, IQR=− 7– 3 IU/L, P=0.0004) showed a significant decrease. Among 28 patients with ALT > 40 at baseline, reduction was significant both clinically (− 17, IQR=− 32–− 1) and statistically (P=0.0003). Total cholesterol levels (TC) increased (+13.4± 3.8 mg/dL, P=0.0006), as well as HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) (+3.8± 1.2 mg/dL, P=0.02), LDL Cholesterol (LDL-C) (+7.6± 3.4, P=0.03) and glucose (+4.0± 1.8 mg/dL, P=0.02). D:A:D: and Framingham risk score did not change at 6 months after switch.Conclusion: A significant reduction of liver enzymes was observed after switching from TDF to TAF, especially in subjects with initial level of ALT > 40 IU/L. Glucose, TC, HDL-C, and LDL-C increased, with no effect on cardiovascular risk scores.Keywords: HIV, TDF, TAF, liver enzymes

Abstract

Objectives: To describe: (i) factors associated with rapid and delayed ART initiation; (ii) rates of 12 week virological response; and (iii) virologically controlled retention in care by 1 year from ART initiation according to timing of start in a real-life setting. Methods: All individuals in the Icona cohort diagnosed with HIV in 2016-17 who initiated ART were grouped according to the time between HIV diagnosis and ART initiation: Group 1, ≤7 days; Group 2, 8-14 days; Group 3, 15-30 days; Group 4, 31-120 days; and Group 5, >120 days. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with: (i) the probability of rapid (Group 1) and very delayed (Group 5) ART initiation; (ii) the 12 week virological response (by a modified snapshot algorithm); and (iii) the probability of retention in care at 1 year (on ART with HIV-RNA <50 copies/mL). Results: A total of 1247 individuals were included [82 (6.6%) in Group 1, 115 (9.2%) in Group 2, 267 (21.4%) in Group 3, 641 (51.4%) in Group 4 and 142 (11.4%) in Group 5]. Main predictors of rapid ART start (Group 1) were low CD4 cell count and high HIV-RNA at first contact with the infectious diseases centre. There was no association between probability of virological response and timing of ART initiation. Overall, 90% of individuals remained on ART after 1 year, 91% with undetectable HIV-RNA. Participants of Italian nationality, those with higher CD4 cell count and lower HIV-RNA at ART initiation were more likely to be retained in care after 1 year. Conclusions: In our high-income observational setting, we did not observe differences in the 1 year rate of virological response and retention in care according to timing of ART initiation.

Abstract

Objectives To describe: (i) factors associated with rapid and delayed ART initiation; (ii) rates of 12 week virological response; and (iii) virologically controlled retention in care by 1 year from ART initiation according to timing of start in a real-life setting. Methods All individuals in the Icona cohort diagnosed with HIV in 2016–17 who initiated ART were grouped according to the time between HIV diagnosis and ART initiation: Group 1, ≤7 days; Group 2, 8–14 days; Group 3, 15–30 days; Group 4, 31–120 days; and Group 5, >120 days. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify factors associated with: (i) the probability of rapid (Group 1) and very delayed (Group 5) ART initiation; (ii) the 12 week virological response (by a modified snapshot algorithm); and (iii) the probability of retention in care at 1 year (on ART with HIV-RNA Results A total of 1247 individuals were included [82 (6.6%) in Group 1, 115 (9.2%) in Group 2, 267 (21.4%) in Group 3, 641 (51.4%) in Group 4 and 142 (11.4%) in Group 5]. Main predictors of rapid ART start (Group 1) were low CD4 cell count and high HIV-RNA at first contact with the infectious diseases centre. There was no association between probability of virological response and timing of ART initiation. Overall, 90% of individuals remained on ART after 1 year, 91% with undetectable HIV-RNA. Participants of Italian nationality, those with higher CD4 cell count and lower HIV-RNA at ART initiation were more likely to be retained in care after 1 year. Conclusions In our high-income observational setting, we did not observe differences in the 1 year rate of virological response and retention in care according to timing of ART initiation.

Abstract

No pressure: This work demonstrates the working principle of an ionic liquid interlayer to enhance the stripping performance of lithium metal in contact with a garnet solid electrolyte. Detailed analysis, including galvanostatic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cryogenic FIB-SEM, shows that pores forming in lithium metal during stripping are compensated to a great extent, which improves the stripping performance up to over 15 mAh cm−2. Solid-state-batteries employing lithium metal anodes promise high theoretical energy and power densities. However, morphological instability occurring at the lithium/solid–electrolyte interface when stripping and plating lithium during cell cycling needs to be mitigated. Vacancy diffusion in lithium metal is not sufficiently fast to prevent pore formation at the interface above a certain current density during stripping. Applied pressure of several MPa can prevent pore formation, but this is not conducive to practical application. This work investigates the concept of ionic liquids as “self-adjusting” interlayers to compensate morphological changes of the lithium anode while avoiding the use of external pressure. A clear improvement of the lithium dissolution process is observed as it is possible to continuously strip more than 70 μm lithium (i. e., 15 mAh cm−2 charge) without the need for external pressure during assembly and electrochemical testing of the system. The impedance of the investigated electrodes is analyzed in detail, and contributions of the different interfaces are evaluated. The conclusions are corroborated with morphology studies using cryo-FIB-SEM and chemical analysis using XPS. Abstract

Lithium‐rich layered oxides (LRLOs) exhibit specific capacities above 250 mAh g$^{-1}$, i.e., higher than any of the commercially employed lithium‐ion‐positive electrode materials. Such high capacities result in high specific energies, meeting the tough requirements for electric vehicle applications. However, LRLOs generally suffer from severe capacity and voltage fading, originating from undesired structural transformations during cycling. Herein, the eco‐friendly, cobalt‐free Li$_{1.2}$Ni$_{0.2}$Mn$_{0.6}$O$_{2}$ (LRNM), offering a specific energy above 800 Wh kg$^{-1}$ at 0.1 C, is investigated in combination with a lithium metal anode and a room temperature ionic liquid‐based electrolyte, i.e., lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide and N‐butyl‐N‐methylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide. As evidenced by electrochemical performance and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and online differential electrochemical mass spectrometry characterization, this electrolyte is capable of suppressing the structural transformation of the positive electrode material, resulting in enhanced cycling stability compared to conventional carbonate‐based electrolytes. Practically, the capacity and voltage fading are significantly limited to only 19% and 3% (i.e., lower than 0.2 mV per cycle), respectively, after 500 cycles. Finally, the beneficial effect of the ionic liquid‐based electrolyte is validated in lithium‐ion cells employing LRNM and Li$_{4}$Ti$_{5}$O$_{12}$. These cells achieve a promising capacity retention of 80% after 500 cycles at 1 C.

Abstract

A preliminary Raman investigation of the ionic liquid N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PYR13TFSI) and its 2/1 complex with the lithium salt LiN(SO2CF3)(sub 2) is reported. The information regarding the interactions between the TFSI(super -) anions and the PYR(sub 13)(super +) and Li(super +) cations suggest that the anions have a very weak interaction with the organic, sterically shielded cations, but strong coordination to the Li(super +) cations.
