We study the problem of optimal trading using general alpha predictors with linear costs and temporary impact. We do this within the framework of stochastic optimization with finite horizon using both limit and market orders. Consistently with other studies, we find that the presence of linear costs induces a no-trading zone when using market orders, and a corresponding market-making zone when using limit orders. We show that, when combining both market and limit orders, the problem is further divided into zones in which we trade more aggressively using market orders. Even though we do not solve analytically the full optimization problem, we present explicit and simple analytical recipes which approximate the full solution and are easy to implement in practice. We analyze N = 1 theories on S5 and S4 x S1, showing how their partition functions can be written in terms of a set of fundamental 5d holomorphic blocks. We demonstrate that, when the 5d mass parameters are analytically continued to suitable values, the S5 and S4 x S1 partition functions degenerate to those for S3 and S2 x S1. We explain this mechanism via the recently proposed correspondence between 5d partition functions and correlators with underlying q-Virasoro symmetry. From the q-Virasoro 3-point functions, we axiomatically derive a set of associated reflection coefficients, and show they can be geometrically interpreted in terms of Harish-Chandra c-functions for quantum symmetric spaces. 3d N=2 partition functions on the squashed three-sphere and on the twisted product S2xS1 have been shown to factorize into sums of squares of solid tori partition functions, the so-called holomorphic blocks. The same set of holomorphic blocks realizes squashed three-sphere and S2xS1 partition functions but the two cases involve different inner products, the S-pairing and the id-pairing respectively. We define a class of q-deformed CFT correlators where conformal blocks are controlled by a deformation of Virasoro symmetry and are paired by S-pairing and id-pairing respectively. Applying the bootstrap approach to a class of degenerate correlators we are able to derive three-point functions. We show that degenerate correlators can be mapped to 3d partition functions while the crossing symmetry of CFT correlators corresponds to the flop symmetry of 3d gauge theories. We explore how non-degenerate q-deformed correlators are related to 5d partition functions. We argue that id-pairing correlators are associated to the superconformal index on S4xS1 while S-pairing three-point function factors capture the one-loop part of S5 partition functions. This is consistent with the interpretation of S2xS1 and squashed three-sphere gauge theories as codimension two defect theories inside S4xS1 and S5 respectively., Comment: 42 pages, 2 figures

Three dimensional field theories admit disorder line operators, dubbed vortex loop operators. They are defined by the path integral in the presence of prescribed singularities along the defect line. We study half-BPS vortex loop operators for N=2 supersymmetric theories on S^3, its deformation S^3_b and S^1 x S^2. We construct BPS vortex loops defined by the path integral with a fixed gauge or flavor holonomy for infinitesimal curves linking the loop. It is also possible to include a singular profile for matter fields. For vortex loops defined by holonomy, we perform supersymmetric localization by calculating the fluctuation modes, or alternatively by applying the index theory for transversally elliptic operators. We clarify how the latter method works in situations without fixed points of relevant isometries. Abelian mirror symmetry transforms Wilson and vortex loops in a specific way. In particular an ordinary Wilson loop transforms into a vortex loop for a flavor symmetry. We put forth a program for perturbatively quantizing the bosonic sector of the IIB superstring on AdS_5xS^5 in the large radius of curvature R (i.e. flat-space) limit, and in light-cone gauge. Using the quantization of the massive particle on AdS_5xS^5 as a guiding exercise, we read off the correct scaling of the particle coordinates in the large radius limit. In the corresponding large \sqrt{\lambda}=R^2/\alpha' limit of the string the oscillator modes must be scaled differently from the zero modes. We compute the bosonic string Hamiltonian in this limit which gives the flat-space mass-squared operator at leading order, followed by a harmonic oscillator potential in the zero modes at subleading order. Using these ingredients we calculate the leading and sub-leading terms in the conformal dimension of the length-four Konishi state in the large-\lambda limit. Furthermore we work out the relevant terms of the energy expansion to next-to-next-to leading order, which are plagued by severe ordering ambiguities. The relation between the partition function of N=2 gauge theories in 4d and conformal Toda field theory in 2d is explained for the case where the 4d theory is a linear quiver with "quiver tails". That is when the 4d theory has gauge groups of different rank. Recently Alday and Tachikawa proposed a relation between conformal blocks in a two-dimensional theory with affine sl(2) symmetry and instanton partition functions in four-dimensional conformal N=2 SU(2) quiver gauge theories in the presence of a certain surface operator. In this paper we extend this proposal to a relation between conformal blocks in theories with affine sl(N) symmetry and instanton partition functions in conformal N=2 SU(N) quiver gauge theories in the presence of a surface operator. The partition function of a family of four dimensional N=2 gauge theories has been recently related to correlation functions of two dimensional conformal Toda field theories. For SU(2) gauge theories, the associated two dimensional theory is A_1 conformal Toda field theory, i.e. Liouville theory. For this case the relation has been extended showing that the expectation value of gauge theory loop operators can be reproduced in Liouville theory inserting in the correlators the monodromy of chiral degenerate fields. In this paper we study Wilson loops in SU(N) gauge theories in the fundamental and anti-fundamental representation of the gauge group and show that they are associated to monodromies of a certain chiral degenerate operator of A_{N-1} Toda field theory. The orientation of the curve along which the monodromy is evaluated selects between fundamental and anti-fundamental representation. The analysis is performed using properties of the monodromy group of the generalized hypergeometric equation, the differential equation satisfied by a class of four point functions relevant for our computation., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures; references added.

We normalize the combinatorial Laplacian of a graph by the degree sum, look at its eigenvalues as a probability distribution and then study its Shannon entropy. Equivalently, we represent a graph with a quantum mechanical state and study its von Neumann entropy. At the graph-theoretic level, this quantity may be interpreted as a measure of regularity; it tends to be larger in relation to the number of connected components, long paths and nontrivial symmetries. When the set of vertices is asymptotically large, we prove that regular graphs and the complete graph have equal entropy, and specifically it turns out to be maximum. On the other hand, when the number of edges is fixed, graphs with large cliques appear to minimize the entropy., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

It is known that the M2-brane worldvolume superalgebra includes two p-form central charges that encode the M-theory intersections involving M2-branes. In this paper we show by explicit computation that the Bagger-Lambert Lagrangian realizes the M2-brane superalgebra, including also the central extensions. We write down a maximally supersymmetric one parameter deformation of the field theory action of Bagger and Lambert. We show that this theory on RxT^2 is invariant under the superalgebra of the maximally supersymmetric Type IIB plane wave. We construct a new class of supersymmetric surface operators in N=4 SYM and find the corresponding dual supergravity solutions. We show that the insertion of the surface operator - which is given by a WZW model supported on the surface - appears by integrating out the localized degrees of freedom along the surface which arise microscopically from a D3/D7 brane intersection. Consistency requires constructing N=4 SYM in the D7 supergravity background and not in flat space. This enlarges the class of holographic gauge theories dual to string theory backgrounds to gauge theories in non-trivial supergravity backgrounds. We prove that the half-BPS Wilson loop operator of N=4 SYM in a symmetric representation of the gauge group has a bulk gravitational description in terms of a single D3-brane in AdS_5xS^5, as argued in hep-th/0604007. We also show that a half-BPS Wilson loop operator in an arbitrary representation is described by the D3-brane configuration proposed in hep-th/0604007. We show that all half-BPS Wilson loop operators in N=4 SYM -- which are labeled by Young tableaus -- have a gravitational dual description in terms of D5-branes or alternatively in terms of D3-branes in AdS_5xS^5. We prove that the insertion of a half-BPS Wilson loop operator in the cal N=4 SYM path integral is achieved by integrating out the degrees of freedom on a configuration of bulk D5-branes or alternatively on a configuration of bulk D3-branes.
