Abstract

AbstractIntensive poultry rearing needs preventive strategies against diseases, several of which are little or not containable by vaccinations. Short- and medium-chain fatty acids (SMCFAs) and chestnut tannin (CHT), both by-products of two different industrial production chains, are very effective antimicrobials. The inclusion level of these additives in the diet is fundamental because a detrimental effect on the gut microbiome can occur if the dose is too high, compromising the animal welfare and performance. Hence, the aim of this trial was to test the effect of a blend (BL; 1:1, w/w) of SMCFAs (fatty acids from C4:0 to C9:0) and CHT extract (CTE) as feed additive in broiler feeding. One hundred one-day-old Ross 308 male chicks were randomly assigned to 5 dietary treatments (4 replicates; 20 pens; 5 animals per pen): control diet (CON), FAS diet (with 1.5 g/100g on dry matter (DM) of SMCFAs), CTE diet (with 1.5 g/100g on DM of CHT extract), BL1 diet (with 1.5 g/100g on DM of BL), and BL2 diet (with 3.0 g/100g on DM of BL). Among the parameters evaluated (weight gain; feed intake; feed efficiency; dressing out), the only differences were observed for the feed intake. In particular, the feed intake of CON (2.876 kg), FAS (2.773 kg), CTE (2.882 kg), and BL1 (2.858 kg) were comparable while the feed intake of BL2 (2.717 kg) was lower than the other diets except for FAS which was similar (p = 0.0010). The microbial community in the caecum was described by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons and was similar between the treatments both in terms of alpha-diversity and beta-diversity. The results of this trial evidenced that no detrimental effect on growth performances or on gut microbiome occurred when birds were fed the blend of SMCFAs and CHT extracts at the inclusion levels tested in this study.HIGHLIGHTSShort- and medium-chain fatty acids and chestnut tannins are alternatives to conventional antimicrobialsNatural antimicrobials improve the sustainability of poultry productionShort- and medium-chain fatty acids and chestnut tannins did not alter the gut microbiota of broiler

Abstract

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is prevalent and disabling among older adults. Standing on its tolerability profile, vortioxetine might be a promising alternative to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) in such a vulnerable population. Methods: We conducted a randomised, assessor- and statistician-blinded, superiority trial including older adults with MDD. The study was conducted between 02/02/2019 and 02/22/2023 in 11 Italian Psychiatric Services. Participants were randomised to vortioxetine or one of the SSRIs, selected according to common practice. Treatment discontinuation due to adverse events after six months was the primary outcome, for which we aimed to detect a 12% difference in favour of vortioxetine. The study was registered in the online repository clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03779789). Findings: The intention-to-treat population included 179 individuals randomised to vortioxetine and 178 to SSRIs. Mean age was 73.7 years (standard deviation 6.1), and 264 participants (69%) were female. Of those on vortioxetine, 78 (44%) discontinued the treatment due to adverse events at six months, compared to 59 (33%) of those on SSRIs (odds ratio 1.56; 95% confidence interval 1.01–2.39). Adjusted and per-protocol analyses confirmed point estimates in favour of SSRIs, but without a significant difference. With the exception of the unadjusted survival analysis showing SSRIs to outperform vortioxetine, secondary outcomes provided results consistent with a lack of substantial safety and tolerability differences between the two arms. Overall, no significant differences emerged in terms of response rates, depressive symptoms and quality of life, while SSRIs outperformed vortioxetine in terms of cognitive performance. Interpretation: As opposed to what was previously hypothesised, vortioxetine did not show a better tolerability profile compared to SSRIs in older adults with MDD in this study. 3. A machine learning approach to rank the determinants of banking crises over time and across countries

Abstract

We use a machine learning approach, namely AdaBoost, to rank the determinants of banking crises over time and across countries. We cover a total of 100 countries, advanced and emerging, over the years from 1970 to 2017. The paper first shows that AdaBoost has a better predictive performance than the logit model, both in-sample and out-of-sample; then, it employs AdaBoost to classify the major macroeconomic factors leading to banking crises. The baseline analysis reveals that the US 10yr Treasury interest rate and world growth play a key role in anticipating a crisis, and that these two variables explain a growing share of the results over time, for both country groups. Other variables, which have been highlighted as important in the literature on crises - such as inflation, current account, public and external debt and credit - are relevant in the lead up to banking crises, but their role has been decreasing over time compared to the aforementioned variables. We present also extensions of the model, which confirm and add to the main results of the baseline model.

Abstract

In the present work we studied the catalytic production of pure hydrogen from methanol and water using the spinel-type oxide CoFe2O4 (cobalt ferrite) as electron carrier. CoFe2O4 is an interesting material with an inverse spinel structure, and can be readily prepared by co-precipitation of the two oxides in basic media. The final material was obtained by calcinations, and two different calcination temperatures (Tcalc= 450 and 750°C) have been selected, to yield the corresponding CF450 and CF750 samples. A thorough physico-chemical characterization of the materials as a function of Tcalc was carried out. In fact, Tcalc induces some morphological changes in the material, strongly affecting, by aggregation, particles size and so leading to different catalytic performances. Another important aspect, related to Tcalc, seems to be the surface coke deposition, and this phenomenon should be minimized in order to maximize the hydrogen yield. This work is aimed at establishing the influence of both crystal size and carbon deposition on the catalytic performance, in order to improve the stability of the material though several RedOx cycles.

Abstract

During recent years, many processes for the production of hydrogen from renewable sources have been proposed, comprising thermal, catalytic, electrolytic and photolytic processes. Catalytic steam-reforming is also an option that can be used for the transformation of bioalcohols into hydrogen. Because of the fascinating challenge of obtaining an inherent separation of hydrogen from the C-containing products, during last years various alternative approaches to conventional SR + WGS have been proposed. In the so-called chemical-loop approach, the SR reaction is decoupled into two spatially and temporarily separated steps: during the first step a reductant (usually methane) is first contacted with a metal oxide, which oxidizes the former into carbon oxides and water. The reduced metal oxide is then reoxidized with water, to produce hydrogen and restore the original oxidation state and the O2- content of the metal oxide.In the present work, we report about a study on the feasibility of a two-step cycle approach for the catalytic production of hydrogen from methanol and water, using the spinel-type oxide CoFe2O4 as the electrons carrier.Contacting the spinel with methanol at T> 300°C led to its progressive reduction, with development of a metallic Co-Fe phase. At high temperature, the formation of metal carbide was also observed. The reoxidation of the reduced spinel with water led to the formation of CoFe2O4 and to the generation of H2; however, some residual CoFe alloy hinted for an incomplete bulk oxidation of the material by steam. Reduction-reoxidation cycles were repeated, confirming the reversibility of the redox process. The major drawback was the accumulation of coke during the reduction step; however, the amount of coke was a function of the main reduction parameters, i.e., temperature and reaction time. Carrying out the methanol oxidation step at temperature no higher than 370°C and the hydrogen-production step at 420°C, allowed minimizing the accumulation of coke during the first step and obtaining nil CO formation during the second step. On the other hand, the overall process efficiency is also related to the degree of spinel reduction, that required optimisation of the reaction time during the two steps. The modifications of the spinel chemical-physical features occurring during repeated redox cycles were investigated. The initial reactivity was a function of the degree of spinel crystallinity; however, sintering phenomena rapidly led to a collapse of the surface area, with a final behaviour that was no longer a function of the initial features of the fresh spinel.

21. The role of surface morphology on the electrocatalytic reduction of organic halides on mono-polycrystalline Silver

Abstract

The electrocatalytic reduction of organic halides on silver, assumed to hinge on an attenuated radical intermediate R···X···Ag, is a reaction of great applicative interest that also provides an example of organic electrocatalytic process particularly convenient for a mechanistic study. The complexity of the problem requires to analyze separately the roles of the many actors involved. The present work focuses on the role of the silver surface morphology, contrasting the reactivity of a series of model halides in systematic CV experiments on (1 1 1), (1 1 0), and (1 0 0) silver monocrystals and on controlled polycrystalline silver surfaces of increasing roughness, in acetonitrile+tetraethylammonium perchlorate medium. The reduction potentials of the alkyl, glycosyl, and benzyl derivatives appear significantly shifted in the positive direction with increasing surface roughness (for polycrystals) or atomic densities and/or surface faceting (for monocrystals) by an extent linked with the molecular structure of the organic halide to be reduced. The addition of strongly specifically adsorbed iodide anions, resulting in surface screening, also results in a leveling effect of the catalytic properties of the different surfaces tested.

Abstract

Objetivo. La enseñanza de la dermatología es a menudo poco apreciada, a pesar de las frecuentes afecciones dermatológicas en la práctica clínica. El objetivo de este estudio es valorar los conocimientos de médicos no dermatólogos y de estudiantes del curso de medicina de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad Estatal de Campinas, Brasil, en el tratamiento de pacientes con afecciones dermatológicas. Entre los estudiantes había 24 que integraban un nuevo modelo curricular, después de la reforma educativa, lo que permitió un mayor número de actividades relacionadas con la especialidad. Sujetos y métodos. Este estudio se desarrolló a través de un examen escrito con diez casos clínicos y sus imágenes. El sujeto evaluado debía marcar una de las cinco alternativas para cada pregunta. Este instrumento se administró a 83 médicos y 55 estudiantes de medicina, de forma anónima. Entre el grupo de médicos, ocho eran especialistas en Dermatología y sirvieron como referencia para el estudio. Resultados. Los estudiantes del nuevo plan de estudios obtuvieron un promedio de 6,34 en relación con la puntuación de los dermatólogos, considerada de 10, la más alta posible. La puntuación promedio de los otros estudiantes fue de 3,82, y la de los médicos no especialistas de las unidades básicas, de 3,32. Conclusiones. El estudio permitió demostrar que los cambios en la enseñanza de la Dermatología fueron importantes para la adquisición de conocimientos de la especialidad por los alumnos que siguieron el nuevo currículo de la facultad y para asumir que los médicos no especialistas del Programa de Salud Familiar que prestan servicios en atención primaria de las regiones estudiadas no recibían formación suficiente para el ejercicio de la especialidad en la calidad de médicos con formación general.

Abstract

Abstract Background - Rabbits provide an excellent model for many animal and human diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, for the development of new vaccines in wound healing management and in the field of tissue engineering of tendon, cartilage, bone and skin. The study presented herein aims to investigate the biological properties of bone marrow rabbit MSCs cultured in different conditions, in order to provide a basis for their clinical applications in veterinary medicine. Findings - MSCs were isolated from 5 New Zealand rabbits. Fold increase, CFU number, doubling time, differentiation ability and immunophenotype were analyzed. With the plating density of 10 cells/cm2 the fold increase was significantly lower with DMEM-20%FCS and MSCs growth was significantly higher with αMEM-hEGF. The highest clonogenic ability was found at 100 cell/cm2 with MSCBM and at 10 cell/cm2 with M199. Both at 10 and 100 cells/cm2, in αMEM medium, the highest CFU increase was obtained by adding bFGF. Abstract

Despite progress in fighting undernutrition, Africa has the highest rates of undernutrition globally, exacerbated by drought and conflict. Mobile phones are emerging as a tool for rapid, cost effective data collection at scale in Africa, as mobile phone subscriptions and phone ownership increase at the highest rates globally. To assess the feasibility and biases of collecting nutrition data via computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI) to mobile phones, we measured Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) and Minimum Acceptable Diet for Infants and Young Children (MAD) using a one-week test-retest study on 1,821 households in Kenya. Accuracy and bias were assessed by comparing individual scores and population prevalence of undernutrition collected via CATI with data collected via traditional face-to-face (F2F) surveys. We were able to reach 75% (n = 1366) of study participants via CATI. Women's reported nutrition scores did not change with mode for MDD-W, but children's nutrition scores were significantly higher when measured via CATI for both the dietary diversity (mean increase of 0.45 food groups, 95% confidence interval 0.34-0.56) and meal frequency (mean increase of 0.75 meals per day, 95% confidence interval 0.53-0.96) components of MAD. This resulted in a 17% higher inferred prevalence of adequate diets for infants and young children via CATI. Women without mobile-phone access were younger and had fewer assets than women with access, but only marginally lower dietary diversity, resulting in a small non-coverage bias of 1-7% due to exclusion of participants without mobile phones. Thus, collecting nutrition data from rural women in Africa with mobile phones may result in 0% (no change) to as much as 25% higher nutrition estimates than collecting that information in face-to-face interviews., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

34. A Two-Step Process for the Synthesis of Hydroxytyrosol.

Abstract

A new process for the synthesis of hydroxytyrosol (3,4-dihydroxyphenylethanol), the most powerful natural antioxidant currently known, by means of a two-step approach is reported. Catechol is first reacted with 2,2-dimethoxyacetaldehyde in basic aqueous medium to produce the corresponding mandelic derivative with >90 % conversion of the limiting reactant and about 70 % selectivity to the desired para-hydroxyalkylated compound. Thereafter, the intermediate is hydrogenated to hydroxytyrosol by using a Pd/C catalyst, with total conversion of the mandelic derivative and 68 % selectivity. This two-step process is the first example of a synthetic pathway for hydroxytyrosol that does not involve the use of halogenated components or reduction methodologies that produce stoichiometric waste. 35. Isolation and characterization of equine amnion mesenchymal stem cells.

Abstract

The amnion is a particular tissue whose cells show features of multipotent stem cells proposed for use in cellular therapy and regenerative medicine. From equine amnion collected after the foal birth we have isolated MSCs (mesenchymal stem cells), namely EAMSCs (equine amnion mesenchymal stem cells), from the mesoblastic layer. The cells were grown in α-MEM (α-modified minimum essential medium) and the effect of EGF (epidermal growth factor) supplementation was evaluated. To assess the growth kinetic of EAMSCs we have taken into account some parameters [PD (population doubling), fold increase and DT (doubling time)]. The differentiation in chondrogenic, adipogenic and osteogenic types of cells and their epitope expression by a cytofluorimetric study have been reported. EGF supplementation of the culture medium resulted in a significant increase in PD growth parameter and in the formation of bone nodules for the osteogenic differentiation. By immunohistochemistry the amnion tissue shows a positivity for the c-Kit (cluster tyrosine-protein kinase), CD105 and Oct-4 (octamer-binding transcription factor 4) antigens that confirmed the presence of MSCs with embryonic phenotype.

Abstract

Background: . The fact that only a small percentage of cord blood units (CBU) stored are actually used for transplantation contributes to raising the already high costs of their processing and cryopreservation. The identification of predictors allowing the early identification of suitable CBU would allow a reduction of costs for the collection, storage and characterisation of CBU with insufficient volume or cell numbers. In our bank we have adopted a cut-off value for using CBU of 8 x 10(8) nucleated cells and a volume >or= 60 mL., Materials and Methods: In 365 banked CBU, we evaluated the correlation between neonatal/gestational parameters and laboratory data used to assess their quality., Results: Biparietal diameter (BPD) and abdominal circumference were significantly and positively correlated with CBU volume (r(2)=0.12, p=0.0011 and r(2)=0.092, p=0.0063, respectively). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that both parameters can be used to identify CBU with insufficient volume (BPD: area under the curve 0.69, 95% CI=0.57-0.82, p=0.004; abdominal circumference: area under the curve 0.67, 95% CI=0.54-0.79, p<0.01). BPD and head circumference, but not abdominal circumference or femoral length, were positively correlated with white blood cell (WBC) count (r(2)=0.215, p=0.031, and r(2)=0.299, p=0.015, respectively). Abdominal circumference, but not BPD, head circumference or femoral length, was statistically significantly correlated with the number of CD34(+) cells in the CBU. Weight at birth and placental weight were positively correlated with WBC count, blood volume, CD34(+) cell count, total colony-forming units and burst-forming units., Conclusion: . Pre-birth assessment of BPD might allow the selection of donors who would yield CBU of sufficient volume and WBC count and avoid the costs of collecting, transferring, storing and analysing CBU with a high probability of resulting unsuitable for transplantation.

Abstract

Background: Rabbits provide an excellent model for many animal and human diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, for the development of new vaccines in wound healing management and in the field of tissue engineering of tendon, cartilage, bone and skin.The study presented herein aims to investigate the biological properties of bone marrow rabbit MSCs cultured in different conditions, in order to provide a basis for their clinical applications in veterinary medicine., Findings: MSCs were isolated from 5 New Zealand rabbits. Fold increase, CFU number, doubling time, differentiation ability and immunophenotype were analyzed.With the plating density of 10 cells/cm2 the fold increase was significantly lower with DMEM-20%FCS and MSCs growth was significantly higher with alphaMEM-hEGF. The highest clonogenic ability was found at 100 cell/cm2 with MSCBM and at 10 cell/cm2 with M199. Both at 10 and 100 cells/cm2, in alphaMEM medium, the highest CFU increase was obtained by adding bFGF. Abstract

The effect of lithium during chronic treatment on the EEG. has been studied in 21 subbjects affected by manic-depressive psychosis. The relation between lithiemic values and EEG. modification has been discussed from varius points of view, considering records of what has been observed in the present research and what reported in literature. The mean hematic lithium level has been considered insufficient to obtein the essential informations. The determination of the intracellular lithium concentration may be a more informative one.
