The COVID-19 pandemic considerably affects public health systems around the world. The lack of knowledge about the virus, the extension of this phenomenon, and the speed of the evolution of the infection are all factors that highlight the necessity of employing new approaches to study these events. Artificial intelligence techniques may be useful in analyzing data related to areas affected by the virus. The aim of this work is to investigate any possible relationships between air quality and confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Italian districts. Specifically, we report an analysis of the correlation between daily COVID-19 cases and environmental factors, such as temperature, relative humidity, and atmospheric pollutants. Our analysis confirms a significant association of some environmental parameters with the spread of the virus. This suggests that machine learning models trained on the environmental parameters to predict the number of future infected cases may be accurate. Predictive models may be useful for helping institutions in making decisions for protecting the population and contrasting the pandemic.

Fracture-related infections (FRIs), as shown in the literature, represent one of the main complications of trauma surgery. They are a consequence of an implant-related "biofilm" formation and are a challenge for surgeons, microbiologists, and infectious disease specialists. For a correct diagnosis, careful clinical evaluation, to look for signs/symptoms attributable to an infectious condition, and instrumental examinations, to highlight the site of infection, its extent, and its severity, are both essential. Unfortunately, due to the lack of data in the literature, there is no consensus about guidelines on the diagnosis and treatment of FRIs. The purpose of this study is to present an up-to-date concept evaluation of the diagnostic procedures and treatment options available in the management of fracture-related infections. Simple Summary: Vulvar lymphomas are uncommon diseases and account for less than 0.5% of gynecological cancers and 1.5% of all NHLs. The various types of lymphomas have recently been identified as separate diseases and not as morphological variations of the same disease, according to the World Health Organization classification. They often represent the secondary localization of systemic disease, and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma is the most common type. We also considered cases of vulvar T-cell lymphomas. The data analysis highlighted the difficulty of diagnosis and the need to resort to biopsy–histological examination, as well as molecular methods. The correctness of the diagnosis directly affects appropriate therapeutic management, which requires an adequate surgical approach that can be integrated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Since they are very rare tumors, lymphomas of the vulva are often not properly recognized. Patients with vulvar lymphoma are generally elderly and the classical manifestation of the disease is a vulvar mass. No significant age differences have been found between primary and secondary lymphoma. To make a correct diagnosis, it is therefore necessary to use not only histological examination but also the genetic and molecular profile in order to establish optimal therapeutic management. Literature analysis confirm the good prognosis of this disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The molecular pathophysiology of cardiometabolic diseases is known to be influenced by dysfunctional ectopic adipose tissue. In addition to lifestyle improvements, these conditions may be managed by novel nutraceutical products. This study evaluatedthe effects of 11 Cameroonian medicinal spice extracts on triglyceride accumulation, glucose uptake, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and interleukin secretion in SW 872 human adipocytes after differentiation with 100 µM oleic acid. Triglyceride content was significantly reduced by all spice extracts. Glucose uptake was significantly increased by Tetrapleura tetraptera, Aframomum melegueta and Zanthoxylum leprieurii. Moreover, Xylopia parviflora, Echinops giganteus and Dichrostachys glomerata significantly reduced the production of ROS. Concerning pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion, we observed that Tetrapleura tetraptera, Echinops giganteus, Dichrostachys glomerata and Aframomum melegueta reduced IL-6 secretion. In addition, Xylopia parviflora, Monodora myristica, Zanthoxylum leprieurii, and Xylopia aethiopica reduced IL-8 secretion, while Dichrostachys glomerata and Aframomum citratum increased it. These findings highlight some interesting properties of these Cameroonian spice extracts in the modulation of cellular parameters relevant to cardiometabolic diseases, which may be further exploited, aiming to develop novel treatment options for these conditions based on nutraceutical products.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a rare inflammation-based vascular cancer involving the skin. The viral aetiology of KS is the Human Herpesvirus 8. KS may be frequently diagnosed in immunosuppressed kidneytransplanted patients, while is less common in patients with dialysis. It is known that various immunological abnormalities can lead to impaired immune status in uremic patients. It is noteworthy that despite the incidence of KS in patients with renal impairment, only few cases have reported efficacy and safety profile of KS targeting anti-cancer drugs in this kidney disease population. Herein, we report the first case of a symptomatic KS patient with renal disease in haemodialysis and focus on its therapeutic management. We also review the main data available from literature regarding the safety of KS therapy in dialysis patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Additional file 2: Figure S2. Effects of SDF-1 stimulation on CXCR4/CXCR7 expression. LCP and SK-Mel28 cells were analyzed by dd-PCR to investigate the effects of 6-h stimulation with recombinant SDF-1 (100 ng/ml) and h-Exos (50 µg/ml) on CXCR4/CXCR7 expression. The stimulation of osteotropic LCP with SDF-1 (white bars) produced a significant increase of both CXCR4 (2.03 ± 0.4-fold change) and CXCR7 (3.4 ± 0.5-fold change) mRNA levels. Similar results were obtained with the addition of h-Exo (black filled bars) from SK-Mel28 cells. On the other hand, CXCR4 and CXCR7 levels were mostly unchanged following stimulation of not-osteotropic SK-Mel28 cells with SDF-1 (0.93 ± 0.1 and 1.27 ± 0.3 fold change, respectively), while CXCR7 only resulted significantly increased (3.5 ± 0.2-fold change) in the presence of SDF-1 and h-Exos from osteotropic LCP. Bars are mean ± SEM. *p

- Abstract
Palavras chave: equivalência de estímulos, implante coclear, nomeação., This paper aims to describe and critically analyze the set of experiments conducted by Brazilian researchers on stimulus equivalence, naming (expressive repertoire) and cochlear implants, which were published between 2008 and 2013. To this end, a literature review in journals of Behavior Analysis, and banks of theses and dissertations, selecting work on stimulus equivalence, cochlear implants and naming, was conducted. 11 studies were analyzed. After analyzing the studies, it was possible to suggest that the teaching procedures, more often used with participants with cochlear implants, have been more efficient to establish picture and printed words selection behaviors - both considered receptive repertoire - than to establish naming pictures and printed words behaviors, which are behaviors associated with expressive reading. In this perspective, it became clear how necessary technological advances in teaching procedures that propose to install and maintain behaviors associated with expressive reading, as effective as teaching procedures that install and maintain behaviors associated with receptive reading. Keywords: stimulus equivalence, cochlear implant, naming.

Rituximab is an effective treatment for CD20+B-cell malignancies and autoimmune disorders. However, adverse drug reactions (ADRs) may occur after rituximab infusion, causing, in rare cases, its discontinuation. In this multicenter, retrospective study, among 374 patients treated with rituximab i.v., 23.5% experienced ADRs. Mean follow-up was 20.6 months (range 8–135). Overall, ADRs were significantly more frequent in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemias (25–35.9%), than in autoimmune diseases (9.4–17.5%) (p<.0001). Grade 3–4 toxicity was observed in eight patients (2.1%), and in four of them (1% of all patients) definitive drug discontinuation was necessary. Interestingly, three groups of patients with different risk of developing ADR were identified, according to a predictive heat-map developed combining four parameters (splenomegaly, history of allergy, hemoglobin levels and gender) selected by multivariate analysis. This model may be useful in identifying patients at higher risk of ADRs, needing appropriate preventing therapies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
